Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Waldergrave
from News Talk zed B.
Speaker 2 (00:37):
All right, here we go, evening, Welcome into sports Talk.
It's dogs and sport. We can push the unpopular politics
to one side like broad beans and Brussels sprouts and
gets straight into the steak. My name is Darcy wall
The Grave lines from open oh eight hundred and eighty

charge does apply. Coming up on the program this evening,
Dame no Lean three zip Toder joins the show. The
Silver ferns head coach. What a constellation? Gup? It's been
so far? Want to carry on as sweep as in
(01:20):
the often can it be done? And what happens to
Grace Wecki at the end of this we're gonna lose
it forever. Are you gonna fight for a dame? You're
gonna fight for Grace and if you know who's going
to replace her. We'll talk with Dame no Lean about
all of that and more, I'm sure towards the end
of the program. Kicking things off, it's Greg Murphy, an
(01:40):
icon of motorsport here in New Zealand. We're talked to
him about the Liam Lawson satu ashen. I say, Sat,
you ashen because the world's media are focusing on Limb
flipping the bird at Serchio Perry's Okay, I get it.
It's a little unsavory, a little tasteless. But it was
(02:01):
just a finger movement, that's all it was. I wouldn't
have done it. I would have lobved old meat pied him.
But like I'm a bogan from west Auckland, so that's
kind of understandable. What wasn't traveling at three hundred kilometers
an hour either? Get that? So Liam hasn't got any
friends in Mexico, Saysio Perez. It's basically calling him the
mature and he's got the wrong attitude for Formula one.
(02:24):
So we're gonna get Greg on the show, who's not shure,
have a few tussles himself on the road. Marcus armbro
is anybody to ambrose, anybody what he thinks about Liam's behavior,
his driving, about his reaction and the reaction of the
world to that rude little man from the south of
South for Aukland. We'll talk with Greg shortly then we'll
(02:45):
get you on the line. Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
Should Liam Lawson have apologized? Should he be more humble?
Just reminds of Israel Duss and I am humble? Should
he be more humble in his entry to Formula one?
That's we're going to talk about. It's coming up after Greg,
but before any of that, let's dive into this Sport
(03:06):
today and in sports today, the World T twenty champs
going to say that again, the World T twenty champs,
the White Ferns look to roll the Indians tonight and
bests their hosts in the One Day International Series. Spinner
Eden Carson has adjusted accordingly from the shortest to the
shorter version of the game. That makes sense, of course.
Speaker 3 (03:29):
Once I got into the rhythm of things and then
you know, kind of realizing that when fifty oco gets
a long format it's going to be a little bit
browing at times. But now it's been good. I think
as a team we really switched on that second game boring.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
Watch your mouth out. Likely she's bowling well, so we'll
deal with that. Grace Wicky might be lost with the
Silver Ferns for a year when she bolts off to
the new South Wales Switts, but defender Kellie Jackson thinks
Grace and her likely replacement, Emelia Warmsley will both benefit
from the seasonal sojourn.
Speaker 4 (04:00):
I think she's going to be a bitter player for us,
but it also gives opportunity to the likes of Amelia
Warmsley to really try grabbed that goal sroop bourb and
get some caught time.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
Black Ferns at Seven's are player Black Fern. Kelly Braze
she's back for the Chiefs monel in superby Opiki, but
she hasn't ruled out a bit of code hopping down
the line.
Speaker 5 (04:20):
Maybe in the next few years. It's probably something Beg
keen to do.
Speaker 4 (04:24):
Obviously, seeing a few of my teammates you over the
bitch and I've only give good things to say about it.
So again, it's just exciting times for I guess Woman's rugby.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
And lead head over where former KIWI coach Frank Andercott
is all over improvement for his old charges as they
take on this weekend express yourselves men.
Speaker 6 (04:43):
Say she did what he could with so many first
starters and they played the game pretty conservative to be honest,
he gains Tonga. They might just have a little bit
more confidence and opened up the game a bit more,
maybe with a little bit more second phase play and
ask more questions to the Tonguan defense.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
And if you've never seen the Kiwi play Donga in
rugby league or New Zealand play rugby union, get your ticket,
get along best crowd you will ever ever see and
hear and feel.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
And that's sports today.
Speaker 7 (05:16):
He also wants him to go down the inside. Paris
is trying to do that. Lawson has to go almost
off the track, but he hags this one out for
a bit longer. Paris is off the track and they're
still going well so well, and Lawson stays their heads.
Speaker 8 (05:33):
Is he serious?
Speaker 5 (05:35):
I don't care.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
We will give you each at.
Speaker 2 (05:37):
Yeah, but a rackus going on, Liam Lawson. He made
a mark when he turned up in Formula one last
year when he was deputizing for the busted up Ricardo.
Now he's got the drive for six six Grand Prix
and a couple of sprint races as well. He's really
causing a stir. Joined now by Greg Murphy News little
Motorsport icon I can call him now, Hey, welcome to
(05:59):
the show mate. Are you at the racetrackodads?
Speaker 5 (06:03):
So I am, thank you just said Hampton down.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
So you'll be taking keen interest in Formula one. I
think a lot of new cylinders are now we've got
our tenth driver in there at Liam Lawson's. He's shaking
things up a little bit. And I suppose that a
little video of him flipping the bird is something that
has really piqued the interest of a lot of people.
Are the aggression there? Should he apologize for that?
Speaker 9 (06:27):
Do you think?
Speaker 5 (06:28):
Yeah?
Speaker 10 (06:29):
It's a PC world we live in, mate, which is
a real shame. So you know, you go and do
something like that, which is great, it's great for the
excitement of the sport, but it controversy all the stuff,
all the things we need to stay interested in things
these days. And then someone or he obviously maybe thought
(06:51):
that they wouldn't see him do it. You know, it's going, oh,
maybe it wasn't a good thing to do, and I
was it good for.
Speaker 5 (06:57):
The brand and blah blah blah.
Speaker 10 (07:00):
And next minute you're apologizing. I'm sure he hasn't changed
his thoughts around why he did it. I thought was fantastic.
It's like there was a bit of a riff going
on there during the race between the two of them.
Sergio didn't hold back on what he thought of Liam
called him an idiot, So I think giving him this
middle finger is only justification, perfect justification.
Speaker 2 (07:21):
How would you and Ambrose go on the day and
age do you think?
Speaker 10 (07:24):
Well, you know, I'd be fine because I don't care
about social media and that respect, and I'm not worried
about what people's opinions are. I didn't worry back then
and I don't care now. People can say whatever they like,
preferred if they've got an opinion to come up and
sat to my face and then hide behind it on
a computer screen.
Speaker 5 (07:43):
But unfortunately that's the way it's done these days. You know.
Speaker 10 (07:47):
Yeah, social media has caused caused no end of controversy
around its own own.
Speaker 5 (07:54):
Self for allowing allowing things to be said.
Speaker 10 (07:56):
I suppose that shouldn't be and then people's opinions, Yeah,
they're taking putting weight behind the wrong the wrong thing.
Speaker 5 (08:06):
So it is what it is. Mate.
Speaker 10 (08:08):
He's doing a great job, he's doing everything that he
needs to do. Liam to give the team no option
but to promote him to that top step and Pereza's
doing everything you possibly can to justify that decision. I mean,
someone of it's been enough one that long to be
knocked out in Q one in that car when your teammates,
you know, on the front row and then go and
(08:30):
park your car over your grid box.
Speaker 5 (08:33):
And then act like you didn't do it.
Speaker 10 (08:36):
I mean, that's someone who's long overdue for either retiring
or replacement, certainly from a team like Red Bull.
Speaker 5 (08:42):
So he's under.
Speaker 10 (08:43):
Pressure and it's pretty obvious, obvious really that Red Bull
needs to make the shift now. And I think even
Christian Horners maybe run out of patience with it as well.
So Liam just keep doing what he's doing.
Speaker 5 (08:54):
He'll be fine.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
Hopefully it's storming a teacup. It'll be forgotten soon. I
think it's a lot of the Mexican nationals who get
really upset the fact Checko's gone hor you know, Checko's
not very happy, so they were pining to him. I
understand where it comes from.
Speaker 10 (09:08):
Are they really I have not? As I say, I
don't pay any attention. So if that's the case, it's
not worth listening to.
Speaker 2 (09:14):
Oh I'm watching it because I can't help myself. I'm
addicted to all of it with Liam though, and what
he's done. There's there's words now from Checko saying he's
got to show more respect Fernando Alonso. He's not respectful that.
I don't believe that for a second.
Speaker 11 (09:29):
You don't earn respect that you winning, Fernando, Fernando Alonso
will be, will be more impressed by the fact that Liam,
you know, is treating him just like everyone else.
Speaker 10 (09:40):
So I wouldn't be wouldn't be listening to what Checko's
got to say and giving his opinion on what someone
else thinks right now, as I say, he's the statements
he's making and the way he's going on is based
on someone who's under a huge amount of pressure to
perform and proven that he's not capable.
Speaker 5 (09:56):
So you know, I'm sure Fernando Alnce so.
Speaker 10 (09:59):
Has respect for for the fact that Liam is racing
him as hard as what he was. And and you know,
when you' double world champion and you're fighting rookie back
at Secret of Americas the other week in Texas, he's
in the car for the first time this year and
he's fighting Alonso.
Speaker 5 (10:18):
I think that's more Abo out.
Speaker 10 (10:19):
Of frustration by Alonso, who should who believes he should
be further up the grip.
Speaker 5 (10:23):
You read between the lines. You know, I'm going to
read between the lines.
Speaker 10 (10:26):
If one at the moment is very popular, it gets
lots of attention and lots of people have opinions about it,
and that's what we want. But you know, don't get
too carried away and believing everything you know that you
read or hear either because it doesn't in the greatest
scheme of the thing.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
It doesn't stand for a lot moving forward.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
You know, Liam, you know what he's done this The
way he races, I don't think he races with respect
when he's on the track. He doesn't go out of control,
but he races with a massive amount of aggression. And
we've seen that right the way through his series. As
he builds up towards Formula One, he doesn't appear to
have changed. He backs himself. He knows what he do.
He can drive a wide car and he's got well,
(11:08):
he's got nuts, hasn't he great? He really has.
Speaker 10 (11:12):
The big difference is he hasn't bought brought his way
into into anything he's done.
Speaker 5 (11:17):
He's did on merit.
Speaker 10 (11:18):
So he's driving a Formula one car on merit he's
a lot of drivers in that field who have bought
their seat there and would like everyone to believe that
they hadn't haven't. So you know, I don't know if
we even need to justify it in any other way.
He is there because he is a fantastic race car
driver with the potential to be one of the best
(11:39):
of all time. So you know, that's why he's there,
and that's why Red Bull and put him in a car.
So if that wasn't the case, what's he doing there.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
I'm not going to disagree with you for one New
York minute on that one. I think he's fantastic, But
his behavior to me, I was like, well, it is
what it is. I'm not exactly in love with that.
But it wasn't like he crashed into the side of someone.
He didn't get in anyone's way. It was a quick
bolt upright finger, It's all it was.
Speaker 5 (12:07):
And I'm off racing, that's nothing.
Speaker 10 (12:09):
I mean, just you know, if you can drag something
on for a long time and not have to go
and actually do some real work, which is the case
for a lot of journalism these days, then you know
that's what they'll do. Because it's a it's an easy
thing to keep regurgitating, so it really means nothing in
the great scheme of things. It's just to move on
to the next one, which will be good because it
will be. It will be at Brazil this weekend. Albeit
(12:33):
I'm sure all the Sky TV people and everybody else
that does the coverage for Formula one will will drag
it out and make a big deal of it this
week because it's it is some kind of story. So anyway,
he'll be focused on actually just going this weekend to
San Paulo and putting another great performance.
Speaker 2 (12:54):
I'm sure what is applying huge amounts of pressure both
to Sergio Perez and to Yuki Sonoda, and we saw
it over the weekend. Neither of those two characters are
coping well with what lim is present. That's the issue
for them. Not a hand for not a hand signal.
They're falling apart. You kiders know what he's doing at
the moment, and exactly the same for Perrys.
Speaker 5 (13:15):
Yeah, yeah, that's right. They got bigger problems to worry about.
Speaker 10 (13:17):
You know, he's qualifying ahead of them or not so much.
Not on the weekend, I mean, Sonoda ruins Liam's lap.
He also ruined his own lab by crashing on the
you know, right at the end of qualifying of Q one,
which knocked them both out of the opportunity to go
sorry Q two to and ruin the opportunity to go
through to Q three, which I think it was based
(13:40):
on the information that was provided that looked like both
of them might have got through, so you know, and
that was an outperforming careers who didn't make it out
of Q one. So you know, Liam, considering it's the
second race of the year year is showing them, showing
them all up.
Speaker 5 (13:57):
So he just got it.
Speaker 10 (13:58):
He's just got to keep doing exactly what he's doing,
stay focused on the job. The team of providing and
great support. He's acknowledged that and and he's given back
to them with his speed as well. I don't think
his car was very good on the race on Sunday.
It looked looked like it was using its tire up
a little bit too much, and they went with an
alternate strategy running the medium first, sorry, the hard first,
(14:21):
and then the medium second, which didn't work for them either.
So you know, he got involved in a few little
bifts here and there, which was exciting, but I don't
think he had the car underneath him to actually get
a proper result on Sunday in Mexico.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
The right call is your call on eighty eight Sports
Talk Call on your home of Sports News Talk zby.
Speaker 2 (14:44):
One of the New Zealand's legends in the motorsport, Greg
Murphy there joining us to talk about the trouble at
Mill with Liam Lawson. Greg the Lucky Bugger is going
to be over in Adelaide too for the final round
of the Supercars Series Toys at Top for the Red
Bull Racing Team. Quite jealous. It's a wonderful racetrack. It's
(15:04):
a wonderful time over there in Adelaide. And already let's
focus on the things to focus on, and that is
young Liam Lawson. Should he have apologized in the fullness
of time? Should he have apologized to Sugio Perre's for
flicking him the bird? No, look if it had jumped
(15:28):
in his car and cracked him over the head with
a milk bottle, maybe yeah, But he didn't. He was frustrated.
I know why he was frustrated. And if you read
through and take a look at a lot of the
social media, which I know that Greg doesn't do. But
I'm an addict when it comes to race car talks,
so I want to know what people are saying. And
(15:48):
this has been backed up by Liam Lawson too. He
had been driving in front of him. I don't know
if he's gone as far as brake testing, but he'd
been getting in his way and being a pain in
the backside in some form of revenge for what happened.
When they came together in Lack nineteen. He was frustrating
(16:11):
Liam Lawson. Liam passed them. His car was broken and
that was Sergio Perry's, mainly because it broke when Limb
and Perris came together, and he flipped from the bird
like you've been driving like an absolute pooh for the
last lap and my face up yours. I'm off. Should
he have apologized, Well, maybe, Gregg said people expect that
(16:31):
in this day and age, but I don't think he
should have done. It happened, it's Formula one, it's hard racing.
He expressed that, and I think we need more of
that in racing. I don't think he should have apologized.
It's not something I would have done myself as far
as flipping the bird like that, but I don't think
he should have walked it back at all. And as
(16:52):
for being more humble and sentured to Formula one, I've
got more on that too, But I want your thoughts. O.
E one hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open.
Should Lim have apologized? A lot of us going on
in sport? It wasn't violent, didn't hurt anyone. No, he
shouldn't have done. He should have just carried on. Oh
(17:13):
eight one hundred eighty ten eighty what do you think?
I want to hear your opinion. Twenty three minutes after
seven lines, raping eight hundred eighty ten eighty con Text
nineteen nine two ZBTB standard text charge does apply. Dame
Nolin Todou joins us later on the piece, the Silver
Fern's head coach, as we look back at the the
(17:36):
Perth crushing and forward to what should happen in Melbourne
tomorrow night seven twenty three on a Tuesday night.
Speaker 11 (17:43):
This is sports talk.
Speaker 1 (17:55):
You don't need for the TMO. We've got the breakdown
on Sports Talk cal oh eight hundred news talk. I'll
give up. I'll give a.
Speaker 9 (18:07):
Look, I don't give up.
Speaker 1 (18:09):
How about you or anything that you do.
Speaker 11 (18:11):
I'll give a pound about you or anything that you do.
Speaker 6 (18:13):
I heard you got to know, man, I see you're
taking a pig puss it up thinking that is.
Speaker 2 (18:17):
Making mis terarry me. This is a bit badass for
z B, isn't it. Damn we'll get out of my chain.
Twenty seven minutes up to seven that's Tuesday nine, twenty
twenty ninth of October. Give those days back. I'm to
ask a watergrave talking about Liam Lawson. Expand this conversation
a week, but plenty of texts have come in nine
(18:39):
two nine two. That's a z B z B. He
petrolges need to give me a ring one hundred and
eighty ten eighty should have. Liam Lawson apologized to Sergio
Peries for flipping him in the bird, giving him the
finger when passing them at the tail end of that
Grand Prix in Mexico. And then as for the assertion
(19:01):
that he needs to be more humble in his entry
to formula one, he's take a but agree from one
of the greats, Fernando Alonso. Fernando Alonso, I'm a reasonably
sure Liam Lawson wasn't even born when Fernando Alonso raced
his first F one race four hundred, four hundred season sorry,
(19:22):
season four hundredth race weekend, this weekend for Alonzo quite extraordinary. No,
he doesn't. He doesn't need to be more humble, and
he doesn't need to pay respects to seniors. His job
is to race the car that's get to the finish
line before everybody else, get to the finish line before
(19:47):
his team mate. He's there to race, and he's always
been like this, and it might not make him particularly popular,
but I was unaware that motorsport was a popularity competition.
I know Daniel Ricardo's very popular because he had a
lovely grin and loved him on Drive to survive. Where's
he now? Not about popularity, It's about winning. That's the
(20:13):
currency of most sport win and you aok A eight
one hundred and eighty ten eighty. I expand on this
a wee bit too, because maybe I'm up to my
eyeballs in it and I struggle to see it from
time to time. You all know or regular listens to
the program. I now, I'm a motorsport fan. This is
something that something that tickles my fancy, something that makes
(20:38):
me smile from time to time. The introduction of Drive
to Survive, magnificent documentary series about Formula One. Well it
was when it started. It's just turned in to pap now,
but that's all right. It encouraged so many people into
Formula one, of the whole New era, whole ne generation
of people coming into Formula one. Now you may well
(21:00):
be one of these people who have been encouraged to
watch Formula one through the series. So my question next though,
is how much does having a guy like Liam Lawson
does that actually drag you to the screen? Because the
docco series Drive to Survive got a lot of people engaged.
(21:22):
Now there is a New Zealander, the tenth New Zealander involved.
Is that enough to make you have some interest in
what happens in Formula one? O eight, one hundred and eighty,
ten eighty. Run through some texts for you now, now
Ian sums it up, and I see if Liam had
been humble and moved over, people would have said he
(21:44):
didn't have the balls for Formula one, poor lad, he
can't win, and like that is so true. This is
what race cars are all about. Someone said, remember jandle
Boy McLaughlin, Yeah, what would you say? I plucked it
into second gave it some jandle and f year after
he bast Ian, I say, Jamie Wincup and Adelaide that
(22:06):
was out do he. Liam reminds me of a young
Vistafan with the way he races. The Stafen would never
have given those drivers any quarter. And he still doesn't
soul to be hypocritical for Red Bull to hold Lim
to account now, Kane, thank you very much. Good point.
I feel like they're paying lipservice to it to a degree.
With the way what Helmut Marco has said, you're gonna
(22:29):
have to squint too much through between the lines of
what Red Bull are saying. I think Checko's dust and
he's gone. I really do, and this weekend didn't help him.
Mexican GP writes Simon, how good peis was break testing
Liam and being a jerk. Liam's one mistake was damaging
(22:49):
his front wing. Liam will be in Checko's seat by tomorrow,
thank you, Simon. Here he didn't say as much. I
thought it would have been break testing. After reading what
Liam said, I think it was quite sound, quite diplomatic
when he said he'd been holding me up the whole lap.
(23:10):
I think that's probably what it means. I don't know,
but I think that's maybe what it means. Hey, regarding Liam,
here has nothing to apologize for. Perez should have let
Liam through. Yuki and Sergio are feeling threatened, go lim
and indeed they are threatened. And you've seen what's happened
(23:31):
with that pressure. Like in any sport, they're collapsing under it. Paul,
how are you?
Speaker 12 (23:37):
It's nice to talk to you mate. How you going?
Speaker 2 (23:39):
I'm going very well and I'm very enthused. Have I
hidden it?
Speaker 9 (23:43):
Well?
Speaker 12 (23:45):
Oh no, we're all of it sparked by this. I reckon.
It's wonderful and you know, I know you're amotor head.
I'm too. A love motor sport. But there's nothing in this.
And Murphy's quite right, there is nothing in this. You
just move on. Look out, Pastime. Going the bird didn't
(24:08):
mean anything to those guys on the track. Nothing.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
I've seen Formula one drivers drive through people right and
smash them into waters. That means something.
Speaker 12 (24:21):
Yeah, but you'd see worse at speedway. I'm going to
get out. It's it's modicable.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Is there a chance? Pall though there's only a second
race back into the competition again that maybe he should
have just mind his p's and ques what he works
his way into it. I don't think that's the case.
I say good on them, but this is a concept.
Speaker 12 (24:42):
Everyone's looking at it like a building apprenticeship. It's not
that they're racing serious teams and serious money and they're
going seriously quick.
Speaker 2 (24:55):
So how many seats are there in Formula one? The biggest,
the most important thing, there's one. How many seats are there?
There are twenty? And you know you're either a billionaire,
well you're really really good at what you do, and
you'll go to the leaks to the ends. Michael Schumacher
horrible person, fantastic driver. He just didn't care.
Speaker 12 (25:19):
And we're so lucky that we've got such a nice
person who can talk to people and he will and
the stuff, and look, he's an exception. I don't like him.
I think the sport and motorsport likes nice people and
people that have skill that they are just so drawn too.
(25:43):
And I think, you know, we're going to be hearing
so much more about Liam.
Speaker 2 (25:49):
I absolutely agree, and I'm glad Paul that you've taken
the time to ring through. I love it. All these
people now saying, look, basically Yuki says you are threatened
by him and that's why they're behaving like this, like
this text. This is just the thing that Kiwis need
(26:11):
to see from Lawson to get him behind him. That's
Liam and us against all our money and tell him
in the world I love it. Thanks Sam. You going
to back that up? Give us call one hundred eighteen eighty.
There's a sports talk on that News Talks c B
still to come up with the program. Dame Nolenda to
join us, to talk a huge success Silver Ferns.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
We need to for me.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Sports talk here on news Talks EB and people up shortly.
Dame Nolan Podua to join us. We'll carry on with
the motorsport with Formula one with a naughty boy, Liam Lawson.
He's living rent free in Yuki Sonoda and in Sugio
periods as head. He's going to take their drive. This
is so good today, Matthew, how are you?
Speaker 8 (27:06):
Uh uh Tin Pie? Thank you kicked the payer ho
uh yeah. This is a arduous, hard situation. Sir Sterling
Moss talked about becoming a racing driver as team orders
sorry Team Control. They've given all these drivers a lot
(27:33):
to race in a team. It's hard for for Liam
Lawson because he's got three times more uh drivers to
to to worry about.
Speaker 2 (27:50):
And yeah he's got Matthew. He's got to be a
team racer, bit checkers. Not on his team. He is
a there's a senior team and a junior team, so
I don't think you know you know what I mean. Yeah, yeah,
there's no team orders.
Speaker 5 (28:11):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (28:12):
Well it's it's a certain amount of control. He needs
to exert a certain amount of control, but he can. Yeah,
it's kind of just it's taken. It might be a
(28:32):
distraction for him that that that this is and if
he's it's and it's taken a lot of the enjoyment
out of it. But he just he has to forget
about this race because the next race, or the next
two or three races, you just got to make them
(28:54):
and they'll be better.
Speaker 2 (28:55):
Well I think so, Matthew, thanks for you coring. Anyone
that rings up and quote is stealing my asses, all
right by me? Well done with that one. He will
put it to one side, and know he will. He's
gone through so much and motives sport even at twenty two,
you're not going to get all choked up about that
it's a distraction going on over there. He'll just focus
on what he needs to do in the race car.
(29:17):
In Formula one, there is no junior or senior put
your foot down or get out of the way. They
very much for that, like there are team orders are
granted someone else has said apologize no. As for Lonzo,
it's just a joke. He was a right third to
Lewis Hamilton and his junior teammate and seven. It's all
documented in Lewis's book My Story that a lot of
(29:40):
Formula One drivers aren't particularly pleasant human beings because it's
so hard to get to the top and then to
stay there. And a handful of him has just brought
their way in and they don't count for the ones
that have got real effort and have really worked to
get there. They are not going to let it go.
So you can understand. An other text says, break testing
is testing the breaks. Break checking is what you mean.
(30:01):
He was saying, it's a break test rolling around in
as a horrid little young man. It's the same thing.
You flash your brake at them if they're traveling too
close to you, and we call it a break test
break check. Either or you know what I'm talking about.
It's illegal on the roads in the USA, trying to
cause an incident. Go liamb both fingers next time. The
(30:22):
key we way our PM could do with a lesson
from Lawson, go for it. Don't lose your edge through
apologize and he's out there to win, not to be humble.
Start the way, intend to finish. You need that killer instinct.
Just keep it safe. That's the idea. Hey, Liam, didn't
need to flip the bird beating. The guy says it
(30:44):
all anyway. I've got no issue of them doing it though,
and then he talks about the rain and thunder and Cambridge.
Thanks very much for that, Darsa. Have you ever been
to crash itch at night around Ladimer Square? Similar spots now, Darcy,
the freedom campers and all the crap and slithering out
our present Sonoda should both apologize to Liam of being
(31:06):
asses themselves limbs the man. They're the boys who cannot
keep up and that is the issue. They're under huge
pressure and they are having a crack anywhere. Although Snow
has been pretty quiet because he really made a mirror
of that. But Checko knows his numbers. A day's a
numbers and he's trying whatever he can to take the
(31:27):
scent off him. And we're doing it all again at
Interlagos coming up this weekend in Brathel. This is so
much fun. They take a we look at Formula one
if you've never looked at it before, take a we
look see if it doesn't grab you by the short
(31:48):
and curlies. It's super fast, it's super exciting, great production values.
And I'll leave you with Darryl just before we have
a listened to Damon Noline at Todoa. Typical of all
you one eyed Kiwis Lawson has just demonstrated the arrogant
Kewi attitude on public roads, the middle finger used all
the time, remember you guys squealing about quakas Smith having
(32:09):
his hand on the ground that last Ever, Lawston has
displayed perfect unsportsmanship and Kiwi bratt attitude. What a dickhead,
that's what teams you crank. They're all good on you.
You're completely and utterly wrong and obviously don't understand or
(32:31):
I have never engaged in any form of motorsport and
you don't know Liam, and you've not watched any but
they feel free to just shoot off. What the lip
whenever you want. That's what shows like this afore nineteen
nineties b ZB gost to twenty cents for that pointless rant.
I'd rather be rung up though, would I mean? Much
more fun? It's called of the eighth. This is Sports
(32:52):
Talk on News Talks.
Speaker 8 (33:02):
And New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (33:04):
New Zealand to win it on.
Speaker 13 (33:06):
Australian soil sixty one to forty three. The difference between
the two teams is a monstrous eighteen goals for only
the third time in fourteen Constellation Cup Series New Zealand
when the silverware.
Speaker 2 (33:28):
We're joined now by Dame Nolina Tolua as we talk
the silver ferns and why not? Hi Dame, how are you?
Speaker 9 (33:35):
I'm very good?
Speaker 2 (33:36):
Thank you well you sounded and as you should be.
What are performances you've had over the last three test matches?
And I suppose what happened in Perth that was the outstander,
wasn't it, Because look, I include myself on this. We
know what the Australians like to do when we get
over there after beating them here and they respond in
kind don't they?
Speaker 9 (33:54):
Yeah, very much so.
Speaker 4 (33:56):
And that's been probably the history over the last three
or four years where even though Australia's had the Constellation Cup,
we've ended the series two all but you know, for
some reason when we've gotten over here, as I've mentioned before,
they've either killed us or you know, we haven't quite
been on target. But for us to put that quality
of performance out in Perth and actually win by that
(34:18):
at margin ism and good and we play some really nice,
skillful netball and that's that's probably the most pleasing thing.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
It's been a lot made about the physicality and the
aggression and what the Australians bring, but I don't know
if you could really put that victory down to that.
It was silky skills. It's kind of almost like the
rugby back line running through, running gaps, not running the man.
Is this something you plan to do?
Speaker 9 (34:45):
Yeah, very much.
Speaker 4 (34:45):
So it's about creating the space, but also for players
to know what their own role is within the systems
as well, and knowing that maybe you may not feel
you know, you may not receive the ball in the
first instance, but when you present for a second or
third it opens up in those phases. So I thought
we were sublime. And you know, they were very hard
(35:06):
on body right from the start, but I also thought,
you know, defensively, were starting to get really strong systems
and you know they're throwing a lot of changes on us,
but we seem to be on top of it and
able to adapt depending on who they put out on court.
Speaker 2 (35:20):
A lot of mid court frustration from them, I'd suggest
the speed was part of that, and also that the fitness.
You've really been a stick with the fitness, haven't you,
and that's starting to come through even more so.
Speaker 12 (35:31):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (35:31):
I mean, you know, a lot's been said over the years,
and you know who's not in and all the rest
of it around our fitness levels. But when you see
the quality of combativeness and also performance and intensity out
there on court, you can understand the levels that we
need to run, specially in our mid court. And you know,
(35:51):
both Cammie Order and we've got Cob as well, Clear
O'Brien and Maddie. You know they're running huge miles out there.
But the ability to play that explosive game is the
difference and repeated efforts. I'm real happy by how people
physically are handling everything, but you know our execution that.
Speaker 9 (36:10):
This stage is on top of it.
Speaker 4 (36:11):
You know, it's just next level and looking forward to
seeing what that looks like in Test Numberfore, what.
Speaker 2 (36:16):
Did you discuss before this third Test match? Much of
the same alterations. How did you go into this Test match?
Because there's a lot of pressure on you actually do
well again after those two outrageous victories in New Zealand.
Speaker 4 (36:30):
Yeah, I mean it's always it's always a fine line,
you know, when you don't want to sort of go
back on history and we don't want to nullify the
things that we are doing well or sort of you know,
keep one eye open and one lee class and say
things that actually negate you know, our positives. So it
was really about us doing our business as usual, making
sure our recovery and our food is really important to us,
(36:52):
so we're on point in that respect, but really looking
at our opposition and being clear about if changes happen,
which we predict that they would and they have been
right throughout, that we could adjust on the fly with
our systems and make sure that we can change it up.
But attacking wise, it's always going to be about ball possession.
(37:13):
You know, if you can win the possession and keep
ball in hand, that's or no matter what sport, there's
always going to be the difference, and obviously with our
ability to take the ball through to Gracie at the
other end, they're having a bit of headaches as to
trying to nullify her. So at the moment it's all
coming together quite nicely. But you know that tests for
is another biggie one for us, and just to consolidate
(37:36):
and make sure that our confidence still remains high.
Speaker 2 (37:40):
Dame Annolling toddu is our guest. I'm glad you mentioned
Grace Wicki, who's been an absolute sensation, but that's no surprise.
Do you think the better she plays and the more
she plays like this, the more like it is that
maybe in the Zella netball might give her a bit
of dispensation along the lines of I think there's only one
other player who's been given that, hasn't it. Is there
(38:01):
an opportunity would you look to do that?
Speaker 9 (38:03):
Dan Well?
Speaker 4 (38:05):
I think opportunities are always open, and you know, it
depends how it's viewed in the perspective of that. I'm
very clear or you know, people are very clear. Where
I sit around the full support of her and knowing
her intent to be a best netballer, that's why she's
taken this opportunity to play in the SECN and I
can only support her and know and understand because of
(38:26):
my experience how well she will come back and with
more intel and just that ability to be better.
Speaker 9 (38:33):
So there's definitely upside.
Speaker 4 (38:36):
And you know, like when I talked previously about one
eye open and one eye closed, it's definitely about that.
But you know these are I know where we are
sitting at the moment, and you know it may open
up decisions to be made by the board or Netball
New Zealand and time will tell where that sits.
Speaker 2 (38:55):
Do you lean on them? You've got enough weight to
kind of throw around the place? Do you think?
Speaker 9 (39:01):
I don't know if I have weight?
Speaker 4 (39:03):
But definitely I'm not sure and come forward, Let's put
it that way and.
Speaker 9 (39:09):
Put my perspective across.
Speaker 4 (39:10):
So you know, my thing is about silver ferns us
been winning Constellation Cup is the first thing, but also
you know, preparation for Commonwealth Games and also twenty twenty
seven Worlds and I'm not dumb to know that she's
one of our big targets for us, and you know,
things do change when we don't have her out on court,
(39:33):
as it did a netwle Wheel Cup in South Africa
last year, so we know what that's like and she's
such a massive she's just so good.
Speaker 9 (39:43):
You know, she's a wheel class player. So I will.
Speaker 4 (39:45):
Always push for that and definitely not slow in putting
my thoughts across.
Speaker 2 (39:50):
Next cab off the rank Noline, Who is that when
you look at that attacking section, have you got another
upcoming play that you've got faith in that we're be
able to I suppose bridge the gap. Should we not
have access to Grace either through selection or injury?
Speaker 9 (40:05):
Yeah, we do.
Speaker 4 (40:06):
Amelia Warmsley, we've had her in the side over the
last two seasons.
Speaker 9 (40:11):
She's a youngster, she's nineteen.
Speaker 4 (40:13):
She's still available for the will Cut next year, so
you know she's a level of reading us and she's
raring to go. And then we've still got a couple
in the levels underneath. But you know, if the others
are coming in, you've got to make that move for
next year, so you know, you just can't bring them
in and think they're going to save the world. So
(40:33):
that's sort of working with our depth at the moment.
But as I say, we'll see what happens moving forward
and possibly the decisions that need to be made.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
How important is Briani Akle been in this.
Speaker 4 (40:46):
She's such a cool chick, you know, like she's a
head coach New South Wales and they've got a history
of women's success, not only in the SECN but in
previous competitions. She's got that Odsie attitude where never say
die and never expect anything from but the beast, so
that has definitely off on us. But she's also a
(41:09):
taking master as well, so just having her expertise in
her understanding of international players is definitely of value to us.
Speaker 1 (41:20):
Forget the riff's call, you make a call on eight
hundred eighty eight Sports Talk on your home of Sports
News Talks.
Speaker 2 (41:28):
Be Dam and Noline Toto are their coach of the
Silver Ferns And if you'd like to listen to the
Whitewash unfold by all means from nine o'clock tomorrow on
GoldSpot Malcolm John and he'll be in there yelling as
much as he can. It's going to be fantastic. What
an enthusiast. Anyway, let's finish things off with a few texts.
(41:48):
Great into your day at Nolan. She showed your class
while sitting in the middle of a chaotic bird avery.
She did indeed some more around Liam Lawson. There's been
a mountain text Dars's hypocrisy of Liam Curios was banging
on about the sports and ship and now they don't
have a celebrateped the Australians. And as soon as I
have an outline, you change it, you and justify it.
Which is it? How do you want your sports people
(42:10):
to be seen? Liam just made one hundred and twenty
eight million enemies in Mexico. I'm probably forty eight million
Spaniards when he got under a Lonzo's skin. Be great
viewing on try to survive. It's not arrogance. The guy
was break checking him, driving terribly and he flicked the
burden as he drove past. It's not David Warner jumping
up and punching the sky after scoring one hundred against
(42:31):
a bunch of seven year old But thanks for your text.
And he cares how many enemies he's made in Mexico.
It doesn't matter. He's there to win races. That's your job.
Win a race.
Speaker 11 (42:46):
Cars.
Speaker 2 (42:48):
I thank you Andy Duff for enduring me today. Thank
you to all the listeners, thanks to the callers, Thank
you of the Texas thing to everybody. I'm Darcy Audigrave.
