Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks' be.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Danet Er, good evening one and all non It is
a grand evening if you're a fan of the All
Whites and a fan of football and a fan of
the World Cup. Because the All Whites they are a going.
They pushed it late, but they got there and convincingly
in the end. Three zero. That's the focus of our program.
This is rare, one hundred years almost of World Cups
(00:58):
and how many times have we dark in the doorway
the FIFA World Cup for men twice. What happens next,
That's what we're going to pull apart over the next hour.
Be joined by gaffer slash manager, slash coach slash successful
men towed down Baisley. He joins it shortly toward the
(01:21):
end of the program. We sent Jason Pine scurrying off
for the microphone in hand down to a media call today.
When I say we sent, he went of his own
accord because he loves the game so much and was
super keen. So we'll play some short interviews that he
picked up as well out of back the day after
when the players woke up and thought Wow, what just
(01:42):
happened last night? We'll find out what happened in their
minds through their mouths. We're pinty later on in the piece.
Can they go any further than this? From what you
saw last night, from what you've seen in the belt out,
what goes through Oceania? Are they going to get to
the finals? And that's it. We know my opinion on
(02:05):
this one, what I do, and I'll sit with you
later on the piece and be interested to see if
you agree or not. Football fans, it is your chance
to shine on our eight hundred and eighty ten eighty.
But before we do any of that, let's steal a
whole of this sport today and sport today. All White
skipper Chris Waters certain his team can go where no
(02:27):
other All White team has gone out of their group
after getting a qualifying leg up from FIFA. Wait, they
gave they show our direct route to the finals. Right,
it's the least they can do.
Speaker 3 (02:38):
Right, I believe we can.
Speaker 4 (02:40):
I have the belief in this team and the team's
gone more than enough quality and experience to be able
to do something. And yeah, we want to do as
well as the two unten team, but even go one
better sales.
Speaker 2 (02:50):
NBL spokes bro Casey Frank is at ease with the
chaotic introductions the league, my newcomers, the Panthers, shallow roster,
a fleeing coach, and none from three dozen Auger.
Speaker 5 (03:03):
Well, but of course never ideal to be judged on
influences like this, But we have no worry about our
reputation in terms of bringing the Panthers in. We're still
happily moving on towards the next steps and plus the
directions going.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
NBL reps fine the red of the Panthers though still
as they say, early doors form all black and current
microphone man mar Lily Mills Muliaina. Since the reigning super
champs have been pushed into an uncomfortable corner from which
they are struggling to escape.
Speaker 6 (03:36):
You now have bled down in their own heart and
all of a sudden becomes a different mindset to him.
You know, they haven't quite got the kicking game right
to put themselves back, or the patients to be able
to say, well, hey, we're not going to play anything
in our own hearts, so they're almost forced the Blues
into playing the game they're not sure they're comfortable with yet.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
And the two new black Caps are said to be
anointed in the upcoming Pakistan One Day International series. Of
US and Nick Kelly are the men part of coach
Gary Stead's master expansion plan. Overall, we're looking to build
the depth of our players and this tour I guess
augusts well for us in that regard.
Speaker 7 (04:14):
And that's sport today.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
It's coming up eleven minutes after seven, so let's call it.
It's Tuesday, twenty fifth, March twenty twenty five. This is
Sports Talk and were joined now by Darren Baisley. Darren
is the master mind behind the All Whites progressing to
the World Cup. They got it done last night at
Eden Park. He joins us now with success sitting on
(04:38):
his shoulder. Darren Bezie mate, Hey, I'm pretty happy, not
as happy as you and your men would be after
what happened last night. Look, you would have had time
to reflect. Now. I don't know how deep you've reflected
on what happened, But what are the big things that
you pull out of that victory last night over in
(04:59):
New Caledonia.
Speaker 8 (05:00):
You know it was it probably still hasn't sunk in,
you know the magnitude of it and you know what's coming. Obviously,
we you know, we've been set out to qualify for
the last year and went through all the qualification games,
and you know, yesterday, I thought Friday night we performed
really well and obviously had that game where everything went
our way and it was a nice, comfortable evening, and
(05:23):
yesterday was a little bit different.
Speaker 7 (05:25):
You know.
Speaker 8 (05:25):
I thought New Caledonia came and I thought they performed
very well, and it ended up a slightly different game
where we needed to do a little bit different play
a different way, you know, and it became a little
bit edgy. I mean, we had chances first half and
cleared off the line and hit the post, but.
Speaker 7 (05:39):
You know, we didn't get that early goal that.
Speaker 8 (05:41):
Settles everything down, and you know, we had to change
a few things at halftime and it ended up being good.
Speaker 7 (05:45):
But it's probably a little bit tighter than we wanted.
Speaker 8 (05:48):
And I gave everyone a little bit of, I suppose
a little bit of scare to think that, you know,
we're definitely getting there. Boys were so focused on qualifying,
so I think there was maybe a little bit of
added pressure on top of them, you know, for this
qualification period.
Speaker 7 (06:03):
But yeah, in the end, we got the job done.
Speaker 2 (06:06):
Big picture of your face smiling on the screen at
the start, and that slowly changed over the first half
as things got more and more stressful. So the ability
for your team to stand up under extreme mental pressure,
because the only pressure put on the team was internal.
I'm sure thinking we should get through, thinking we should
(06:27):
this one. But when it comes to a game where
it's all or nothing qualification for the World Cup, you
can't replicate that pressure, can you, Darren, You can't really.
Speaker 8 (06:37):
And it's a weird one because all the players and ourselves, you.
Speaker 7 (06:41):
Know, we're totally aware that you know, we were.
Speaker 8 (06:43):
The favorites and the stronger team and gain it's a
game we should win every time.
Speaker 7 (06:49):
You know.
Speaker 8 (06:50):
That adds a weird different type of pressure, that expectation,
and when you put so much on the line. I
think we went into it with the right mindset, but
you know, when we missed a couple of chances and
it just didn't quite go our way like it did
Friday in earlier on it, Yeah, definitely became a little
bit frustrating for the players, and I think they could
(07:11):
sense that little edge because they just wanted they just
wanted to bring it home. Quickly and get the job done,
and we had to wait a little bit longer than
we maybe wanted to.
Speaker 2 (07:19):
What do you say to the guys at halftime when
they're dealing with this weight of favoritism. How do you
approach that you saw what you saw in the first half,
didn't you change much mentally?
Speaker 5 (07:30):
Down?
Speaker 8 (07:31):
I mean, we I felt like we had a good
half time, you know that. I mean, the players are
great anyway, So we were pretty calm in there, and
you know, we looked at some of the things that
we could do slightly different, you know, and be better
at in the second half. How we're going to actually
hurt you know, new Kelly and actually get this win.
So you know that involved playing you know a little
bit differently and playing a bit quicker and playing forward
(07:52):
more and getting you know, those runs in behind.
Speaker 7 (07:54):
But we need to play the balls.
Speaker 8 (07:55):
In behind, and because they were set up in a
pretty compact, deep defensive block, so you know, we needed
to actually force the game other than just dominate possession.
Speaker 7 (08:06):
So yeah, and then obviously we made a.
Speaker 8 (08:08):
Few changes made to substitutions and we just wanted to
add some maybe fresh energy potentially, you know, the starting
lineup rolling over and going again. You know, you look
back and think, Okay, was that the right decision At
the time, we thought it was because Friday was so good.
But you know, I think at halftime we thought, right,
we need to inject some from fresh legs, and we
(08:30):
did that with Eli and Franny, and yeah, the second
half was good and it went really well.
Speaker 2 (08:37):
It did three goals, one of them from the most
unlikely source. But what a cross before Boxhil managed to
get in and I'm sure that relieved Chris Wood as well,
because when he was pulled you can see the stress
on his face too. He wants to be there to
fary his mien through such as the nature of Chris Wood.
Speaker 8 (08:57):
I know, yeah, it was obviously a real blow for
Chris and us, you know, when he had to come off.
Speaker 7 (09:04):
But you know, that's why we have this deep skid
and we have.
Speaker 8 (09:06):
Players that you can come on and replace players and
come on and do a job.
Speaker 7 (09:10):
And thought Costa did that very well.
Speaker 8 (09:12):
But going back to boxing, I mean, we've waited a
long time for him to score.
Speaker 7 (09:15):
For the Whites.
Speaker 8 (09:16):
He scored goals at his clubs. You know, I've watched
them score goals for Minnesota. But that was a special
moment for him, you know, at his stage of his
international career, to finally get that goal in such a
big moment, in such a big game, you know, with
the rewards at stake was massive, So it was great
for him.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
What it was Now down Bazi, do you process what
happened on then pretty much had it jeeked and start
again from fresh.
Speaker 7 (09:44):
Yeah, I mean we get into planning pretty quickly.
Speaker 8 (09:47):
Obviously we've got you know, the next four windows June, September, October,
November with the international windows, so yeah, we're looking to
get all of those windows with good fixtures confirmed, which
means we can start planning against oppositions.
Speaker 7 (10:01):
And I think you know, we've had to.
Speaker 8 (10:04):
Treat the Oceanic Qualifiers slightly differently, you know, in regards
to the levels that we play, so it is it
is a little bit different, you know, when we're when
we're playing the island teams and we're the heavy favorites
because most of the time when we play you know,
around the world, you know, it's the other way around.
Speaker 7 (10:21):
We're the under ranked.
Speaker 8 (10:23):
Team playing against other teams, So that adds a different dynamic.
So it's definitely stuff we've we've had to deal with.
And if I look back to the Nation's Cup last
year and the five qualification games we've had, you know,
we've we've done really well. We've won every game. I
think we're only conceded one goal and scored trupload of goals,
so safely navigated through the Oceania opposition games that we've played.
Speaker 2 (10:47):
What do you do outside of the windows? What can
you physically do around preparation for your players? They're far flung,
they're all out of the world, they're all playing in
different leagues. Is there anything you can do down.
Speaker 8 (11:00):
No, not really, because you know, they're all in professional
environments and you know, I keep in touch with them
very you know, pretty regularly, mostly though around how it's
going at their club, because you know, what we can't
do is overload them with our information when they're preparing
to play, you know, if it's words he's preparing to
play against an Arsenal or Tottenham, you know, or Libby's
(11:21):
preparing to play against Juventus and AC Milanum, you know,
so we can't really be sending them information of what
we want. So, yeah, we we just make sure that
we keep in touch with all the players, and that
we prepare and organize ourselves as staff to be the
best we can be so that when we get together,
you know, the detailing information we give out is clear
and concise, and we can get that to the players
(11:43):
pretty quickly once they depart their clubs.
Speaker 7 (11:45):
For each window.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
It's not your job, by presuming as an any way
to secure the opposition for the international windows. But now
that you've qualified, does that make it easier for in
his own football to actually secure quality opposition in the builder?
Speaker 8 (12:01):
Yeah, it does, because you know, everybody wants to prepare
for World Cups, and you know we're now one of
five now teams that have qualified, you know, with Japan
qualifying the other day and the three host nations, so
you know, we're quite sought after in a team that
everybody now knows is going to be at the World Cup,
(12:22):
you know, and that's opposition that people like to play against.
Speaker 7 (12:25):
So it does. It does help us with fixtures.
Speaker 8 (12:28):
That the hard thing for us is that most of
the countries have qualification games in these windows, so it's
something that not everybody understands that, you know, we can't
just organize a game at any stage we're governed by
FIFA and there's only sort of two game days really
that we can play in each window, and each window
is sort of nine days long, so each it's not
(12:51):
like a club you can just organize a game.
Speaker 7 (12:52):
We have to it can only be at a certain time.
Speaker 8 (12:55):
And if you countries have their fixtures lined up in
regards to a qualification games, they're obviously they're not available
to play friendly or internationals rather than calling them friendlies.
But we've got some great games lined up through the year.
It's going to be a really exciting year of preparing
and play a lot of highly ranked teams, you know,
try and play against a lot of different opposition from
(13:17):
different confederations to ensure that once we know what group
we're in at the World Cup, which will be next December,
then we'll have had some experience playing against all these
different teams.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
Learning process for everybody. Darren Bazi, what have you learned
around dealing with far flung talent. That's the hardest thing
you got to deal with, and I spect every other
international coach has got a similar problem. But New Zealand
so far away from anywhere and players dotted all over
leagues all over the country. Have you picked anything up
(13:50):
in this process around the best way to develop and
work with these players.
Speaker 8 (13:55):
I mean, the best way for us to develop them
really is for them to get into really good environments,
you know, and.
Speaker 7 (14:01):
It's the clubs that developed them. You know.
Speaker 8 (14:03):
We make selections, we monitor and make some selections, and
then we bring them together, you know, and we really
work hard on the culture. Our style of play is
sort of in bed now and we don't we don't
chop and change formation so that the players when you
look at this last window, we only really had two
training sessions, so we can't do something completely different. We
(14:23):
have to be consistent with how we play so that
players once they come in, you know, that we have
a process where they can switch from their environments into
our environment and get straight into it really quickly. So
we have to keep information pretty clear and concise so
that they're not having to think or how do we
how do we want to play this window? How we
playing that, you know in that moment. So yeah, we've
(14:45):
been building that over a few years now, so that's well,
and then the rest we just build on culture and
making sure that you know, every time they come together,
you know, they're connected back to each other, back to
New Zealand and back to our you know, our campaign
plan really.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
And Darren, one last thing and thanks so much for
giving us some of your time. You must be sick
to death of the media by name tavern It. Since
that victory, the next step I say, and feel free
to say, no, you're wrong. Qualifying for the World Cup
is massive. It's a much easier path this way round.
So I was a fear to say that. Get into
(15:20):
the round of thirty two when the World Cup starts
is an essence the next form of qualifying, if you will.
Speaker 8 (15:28):
Yeah, you know, we the players and the staff and
we've obviously discussed it a lot, and what are we
trying to achieve? And yeah, we want to go to
the World Cup and do something, you know, we do
want to get out of the group. You win games
of football at World Cups and you know, and do
something that really really can affect the game here in
New Zealand and that people can be proud of. So yeah,
(15:49):
definitely they're they're looking. I mean, that's the goal, get
out of the group and see where that takes us.
We know that every game we play at World Cup
is going to be against a higher ranked opposition and
a team you're a very good team.
Speaker 7 (16:01):
So that's it is difficult.
Speaker 8 (16:03):
But I think we've got a really good, strong squad,
you know, their cohesion. Whilst we haven't got all these
players playing in the top leagues, you know, what we
have is this cohesion of players that grew up together,
played club football together, played in the under seventeens, the
under twenties together. You know, I know each other pretty well,
which isn't always the case for some international teams. They
(16:26):
might have all players playing in top leagues. But you know,
we've got something a little bit different. And the culture
that the players have driven and are really brought into
also also gives us that little bit extra when we
play against these top teams.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
The right call is your call on oh eight hundred
eighty eighty Sports Talk call on your home of sports
news Talk zibby.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
Darren Beza. Their head coach Rvy All Whites qualified for
the World Cup in the Americas. They're coming up next
a year, joining us there to talk about what happened,
what happens next, what they have to do to bridge
the is it an enormous gap between them selves and
the rest of the world. Does it feel a tad
(17:11):
hollow the Whites have entered the World Cup? I did
get a swelling of pride when I watched the game
last night. It's like, you're good on you guys. I'm
stoke for you. Love the gin their Facebook. There's something
about the fact that there's so many teams now and
I'm trying to wrestle with this concept in my head.
(17:31):
Does that diminish what they've done? I've got an idea
about that. What I need to be helped by you
out there in radio land I eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty. There's a little angles working in this one.
Has that lessened the success that they've had by the
(17:53):
nature of qualification straight in for the best Oceania team,
no intercontinental playoff. Now they're at the big dance. I
don't think the players for one second think it's been
being cheapened or diminished or lessened. They're going to the
World Cup. They couldn't give a Cobbler's mate. They're off
time of their life. What about you the fan? When
(18:16):
you look at that, is there just a week I'm
not sure behind it or not quite? Frankly, straight up,
and honest, the all whites did what the all whites
had to do under the laws and the rules, the
qualification standards put down by FIFA. So I don't think
(18:38):
it does diminish it. I don't think it does make
it a hollow victory. I don't think it lessens their
achievement at all. They achieve what they had to do
within the parameters they were set. Now they've got to
get through and get to the top thirty two because
me that is the true qualifying Once they get out
(18:59):
of their group, then they can be up there with
twenty ten and the nineteen eighty two. Your thoughts, Oh,
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open. You
can text nine two nine two. Is it BCB phone
calls free text of cost standard text charge, give us
a call. You disagree that is it being diminished or not?
Does this path make it easier? I still think it's
(19:21):
great that just really interested in what happens.
Speaker 9 (19:23):
Now there's something in the way that you're talking. But
I hear them, Mom, move inside, you go.
Speaker 10 (19:40):
No need for the TMO.
Speaker 1 (19:41):
We've got the breakdown on sports Talk CALLA News Talk said.
Speaker 2 (19:53):
They had the marks, they did what they had to do,
and it's a direct result they've qualified directly into the
World Cup. To know, it was a bit squeaky bum
time for a while there, but the job was done.
And as I said Darren BAIZI, you cannot replicate the
pressure of knowing you should win, being more than warm
(20:18):
favorites to win, and then looking down the barrel of
a gun with everything on the line halftime zip zip.
To perform under that kind of pressure, pretty impressive. You've
got to like that. Let's go down to the phone.
Does this diminish what they've done in any way, shape
or form with the relative ease of qualifying through Oceania? Goyday, Steve.
Speaker 11 (20:44):
Yeah, that's how you're doing.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Yeah, I'm very good yourself.
Speaker 11 (20:47):
Oh no, good make I was at the game last night,
and those boys should be so proud of what they did.
Whether twenty ten or now, it doesn't matther that's what
they've been given to qualify, and yeah, I'm proud of them.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
What was what was the atmosphere light? Because I know
I'm sitting at home in my uncomfortable lounge, Yet that
the second half I was almost excited because this is prescient.
Now we're going to see what this team's made out of.
This has got something on it was that the feeling
in the crowd or.
Speaker 11 (21:21):
Not Steve Oh, I think so, I think you're right.
You're right, heck, because we were doing behind the goal
in the second half where the goals were scored and
like the first half we were going like yeah, New Codon,
you're in this. And then the second half but disappointed
Chris Wood you know, got the injury, but like across
(21:43):
the barbarus has come on and the changes there and
basely made at half time made the difference.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
And that's what the manager should do, identify what's not working.
Speaker 11 (21:55):
Yep. One he made some good calls and he made
the difference and the boys performed and what their tieved
last night.
Speaker 7 (22:04):
You know.
Speaker 11 (22:05):
Again they've given the opportunities to get to the World Cup.
They have done it. Like twenty ten, they had the
hard road. I was there then at that final game
when they when they qualified, unbelievable. It's not the same thing.
But I don't care how they qualify. They made it so.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
Sorry Stephen, it's got a similar weight for you. After
qualifying through and what was a crazy, crazy time in
Wellington to this it's comparable.
Speaker 11 (22:36):
Absolutely absolutely, you know they're in the worked up people
have made it forty two things or whatever how many
teams have made we're qualified, So we've qualified, so you
know we should be proud and excited, like, you know,
bring it on.
Speaker 2 (22:51):
See if I'm what of mind being mean spirited by
saying they need to get out of their group, and
that was therefore to me be the same standard of
achievement as eighty two and twenty ten.
Speaker 11 (23:04):
Yeah, yeah, it's just going to see what the groups are.
Speaker 2 (23:08):
Yeah, well that's going to be great. Their draw is
going to be crazy, isn't it. When is there in December?
Speaker 7 (23:13):
I know?
Speaker 11 (23:14):
And yeah, it's just going to see what the group.
I mean, I don't know all the other minote countries
that are involved that will qualified. But like the end
of the day, you's done it. We're in there again,
like we've done well and like the boys should be
proud of themselves like I am.
Speaker 7 (23:32):
On.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Yes, Steve, thanks very much for your call and that
support and for people that's saying they're going to be
swamped by all these other amazing teams. You can remember
there's been sixteen teams added from all over the Globe
not the weakest team there. There are other teams that
have got there going wow, the rarefied idea of the
(23:54):
World Cup, who's to say they're going to perform any better?
Interested New thoughts on eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Michael, Hello.
Speaker 10 (24:04):
Hello there, what was up? Yeah? So I'm twenty three
years old and I finally remember the Auights qualifying in
twenty ten. For those saying that we're going to get swamped, well,
if you remember the twenty ten World Cup where we
(24:26):
had to face the reigning champs Italy, we did not
get swamped. We didn't win any games, but we didn't
lose any games and were undefeated, unbeaten.
Speaker 2 (24:36):
Yet never forget that that was awesome, wasn't it?
Speaker 7 (24:40):
So?
Speaker 10 (24:40):
Yes, and it was a long time ago, but I
remember that World Cup very very well, and I think
it's really you know, there was the game yesterday. It
was a bit of a tough watch. We run in
the end, but it was a tough watch. But we've
done the job in the end, and there was a
lot of pressure there. But I think the bigger picture
is I find it cool how there's a whole generation
(25:03):
of New Zealand kids that have never got to see
the it's playing a World Cup, that will get to
see us on the biggest stage, versing you know, potentially
some very good teams, and I think it's kind of
cool how the whole country is going to get into
what is my personal favorite sports tournament in out of
(25:27):
all of all of them.
Speaker 2 (25:28):
Only beauty of it as well is the time zone.
It's not going to be in the middle of the
night some horrible time zone, so a lot of the.
Speaker 10 (25:36):
Games, yep, they are going to be great. It's not
going to be in Europe or the Middle East, and
so the time zones are going to be great for viewing.
And I hope when tournament rolls around next year that
everyone becomes a soccer fan in New Zealand. I think
it's going to be a great tournament and I hope
(25:56):
we can do well. And I'm also hope to the
build up we can get some good quality you know,
European opposition, maybe some top Asian or some South America
teams as well, get some good three lason so that
we can be ready to go and maybe cause an
upset or to come twenty twenty six, we've.
Speaker 2 (26:17):
Got another drawers we don't know who we're playing, so
I think the idea of upset if they're there or
thereabouts something you can call it. That we teams that
won't be as highly ranked as us, we won't be
dead last. This is a team that's got to back itself.
Players from all over well, they got players from the
(26:38):
America's players running around Asia, heaps running around Europe. Yeah,
look back at twenty ten North Korea and the AFC
or one hundred and five in the world. South Africa
the hosts were eighty three in.
Speaker 10 (26:56):
The world.
Speaker 2 (27:00):
And we were seventy eight in the world, so the
third West, worst ranking but unbeaten. There's it's quite amazing.
Love your thoughts eight hundred eighty ten eighty You've got
plenty of texts are nine nine t on z b ZB.
I like this text. I'll give you this now. I've
got some more coming up later that we're talking about
the quality of this team and does this result is it?
(27:24):
Is it diminished by the fact that there's forty eight
teams that can qualify, not thirty two. I like this
text from en interesting question. How long before Australia come
crawling back to Oceania? They won't too much pride. Twenty
three minutes to eight Sports Talk this newstalk b lines
(27:45):
are open L eight hundred and eighty ten eighty. I'll
start of the eight the draw of the World Cup.
(28:08):
We've been well informed by one of our listeners. Is
December a pretty tense time. Maybe some crimball presents for
people out there. Steve thinks the World Cup qualification process
as a joke. Surely it's to be the top rank
forty eight teams playing, not minnows that turn up embarrass
and so I think that Steve, it's a World Cup.
A World Cup doesn't mean the best forty eight teams
(28:30):
in the world. It means it's a cup competed by
teams from all over the world. It's called being inclusive,
and I know that as a concept that a lot
of people can't quite deal with. It's not a meritocracy.
This is a celebration of football across the globe, from
the habs to the have nots. They all get to
have a turn. Nineteen minutes away from eight, Chris Wood
(28:54):
most popular man there is, Well, isn't football circles anyway?
Jason Pine, colleague and football commentator, extraordinary caught up with
them at the SAFT the noon. First thing he said
to asked and was that, like, how is the injury?
What is the injury and how is it today?
Speaker 4 (29:13):
To be fair, I can't say too much because I
don't know at the moment. I have to go get
it checked out today and get some some scans on
and things like that. But hopefully it's nothing too serious.
Landed awkward awkwardly, I think, and I've just got to
deal with what comes out now.
Speaker 12 (29:29):
So it's your hip, What part of the specific part
of your body is it?
Speaker 3 (29:32):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (29:33):
Hip and rib It's just one of those that just
felt a lot of pain and couldn't push off with
it through my through my leg and once it happens,
I can't run and the best thing is to get
off and let someone.
Speaker 3 (29:45):
Else do a job, because I'd be letting the team down.
Speaker 12 (29:48):
Yeah, what are the emotions of that time? Because I'm
sure you want to stay on right, you want to
guide your team to the to the World Cup. What
are the emotions that go through your head? Is your
is your better with that but also with what's best
for your body and for the team.
Speaker 4 (29:58):
Yeah, I think I think you have to think about
the team. First, I was doing nobody any favors. I
couldn't couldn't move, couldn't couldn't defend, and couldn't help it
in for those one or two minutes that I tried
to stay on and things like that. I was letting
the side down just not being able to do what
we needed to do, and especially in a big game
where everybody had to be counted for. So, yeah, you
have to do the right thing. And I think Base
(30:19):
called it very early. He saw it, and I think
it was the right.
Speaker 3 (30:22):
Thing to do.
Speaker 12 (30:23):
So describe how it was on the bench before the
first goal. You're sitting there, you can't unpack the game anymore.
It's still nil nil. Do you then become a bit
of a fan like us and get a bit nervous?
Speaker 3 (30:34):
Not really.
Speaker 4 (30:35):
I think the longer the games goes on, probably we've
got a bit more nervous. But I still had a
huge belief in our team. We've done well in the
first half. It just didn't go in for us.
Speaker 3 (30:44):
Second half.
Speaker 4 (30:44):
We were doing well and started well and we believed
there was always going to be a goal. We just
needed to make sure we weren't doing anything wrong at
the other end and the defense was fantastic in that sense.
And yeah, when box he put that goal in, I
mean we kind of felt like, here we go, we're
ready to kick on now. And he's been a champion
of all ways for a long.
Speaker 3 (31:05):
Period of time. Special that he was to score his
first goal on that big occasion.
Speaker 12 (31:09):
If there was a sweepstake and you could pick, you know,
your your favorite top goal scorer, I think your eyes
would have passed over Michael Boxer, wouldn't they.
Speaker 4 (31:15):
Yeah, potentially, with with with this history record of it,
but special goals, special moment, special man. So yeah, it's
fantastic for him, and yeah, we're very happy for him.
Speaker 12 (31:25):
And there's a lot of talk about the young players
and this team and rightly so. But then you look
at Costa barbarusis another guy and as mid thirties, he
comes on, you know, in unexpected circumstances, he provides a goal.
So you know there's a there's a bit of this
experience thing, isn't there.
Speaker 4 (31:37):
Yeah, definitely, that's I think that's a good balance we
have between this team and I'm costed unfantastically while coming on,
especially after the heartbreaker last time and him being involved
in getting sin top and things like that. I'm sure
he desperately wanted to achieve something great and be a
part of history and do something in the right notes.
(31:57):
And he done in both games, scoring in both games
and in semi final and final to put us side
through to the World Cup.
Speaker 3 (32:03):
It's fantastic. So he's going to be very proud of himself.
Speaker 12 (32:05):
To things like the sinking immediately Chris or like do
you sit here You're going to a World Cup next year?
Has that sunken?
Speaker 4 (32:12):
I think it's sings in overtime you get snippets of
it all, and I think it's going to be just
continuous now until until the World Cup.
Speaker 3 (32:19):
Got a lot to look forward to.
Speaker 4 (32:20):
When more teams get a get qualified, you see your
names with them and you're thinking, oh, could we be
drawn with them, drawn with them? And then when December
comes around we find out where we're going to be
based and who we're going to be playing. That's the
true excitement.
Speaker 12 (32:33):
Yeah, And regardless of who it is. I know you're
on record of saying we're not just going to make
up the numbers. We're not just the forty eighth team there.
You want to win matches and get out of that group.
Speaker 3 (32:40):
Right, Yeah, I believe. I believe we can.
Speaker 4 (32:42):
I have the belief in this team, and the team's
got more than enough quality and experience to be able
to do something. And yeah, we want to. We want
to do as well as the two unten team, but
even go one better. It's not going to be easy.
It's the world stage and it's just one of those
we have to believe in and make sure. Right, That's
what we've been working the last two years.
Speaker 2 (33:00):
Darcy, it's Jason pine of your Chat with a White Skipper, Chris.
We do not do these things because they are easy.
We do these things because they are hard. JFK. Some
of you longer than the tooth and know exactly what
I'm talking about. I mean, it's like not I had
to land on the moon. They've just got to go
to America. And one of a few games they have
(33:22):
listened now to, mister Jason Piney got one of the
goals scores and one of the men who turned the
tide for the all ones. His name is Elijah Justin.
First up, Piney asked him, do you mind reflecting on
what played our last night?
Speaker 13 (33:40):
Yeah, it was an amazing night. I think the most
important thing is we got the job done and now
we can look forward to the World Cup. And then
on the game, Yeah, New Caledonia they made it difficult,
so I think that adds to the feeling of satisfaction.
Speaker 12 (33:55):
What were you seeing from the bench in the first half.
Speaker 13 (33:59):
Yeah, the first half I was watching as a fan.
I was on the edge of my seat. I was
just willing the ball to go in. I think their
goalkie and some of their defenders made unbelievable blocks, and
you know, also on the counter they had a couple
opportunities where you know, I was pretty nervous, but yeah,
I've never been a part of a bench that has
been I think that I don't want to say nervous,
(34:20):
but but there was a real tension, and you know,
we were we were willing that board to go in
and obviously didn't have the first off, but and then
we got it done.
Speaker 12 (34:28):
So you're on at halftime. What are the key messages
you get from the coaching staff as you make your entrance.
Speaker 13 (34:33):
Yeah, just to bring something maybe a little bit different,
some runs in behind, just to work hard. Yeah, I
was pretty nervous, to be fair, talking to Francis just
before we went on, like let's let's you know, try
to make something happen. And then yeah, once once I
got in that kind of yeah, just just became you know,
swept up in the in the night and just super happy.
Speaker 12 (34:57):
Yes, Skipper goes off, it's still nil all he's the
guy who's got most of your goals recently. What conversations
are going on out in the middle when Chris would departs.
Speaker 13 (35:07):
Yeah, I don't think I talked him. I kind of
turned and I saw he was down, and you know,
I didn't think anything of it. And then when he
went off, you do start to think that, you know,
at Neil, Neil the captain obviously our main goalscorer going
off that these are the types of events that happened
when things start to you know, crumble and maybe don't
go your way. But Costa died an unbelievable job when
(35:30):
he came in, and then yeah, once we made the breakthrough,
then we started to you know, maybe settle down a
little bit and play a little bit better. And then yeah,
I hope he's alright. I think Forrest need him, We
need him the way he's been playing. So obviously unfortunate
for him, but yeah, in the end it worked out.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Dussie forrests are on the bier as soon as it
happens to basically get him off, now get him off
now to be aka, we will see. That was Elijah
just also keep part of the action last night was
one of the more senior members of the side, Tommy Smith.
He joined Piney as well as a busy man with
his microphone was a Jason pine and Piney started off
(36:09):
by asking if we like to reflect on last night's
result as well.
Speaker 14 (36:17):
I think a lot of credit has to go to
New Caledonia for the way they performed and went about
their business. You know, they made it really difficult for us,
and for a time there it was quite nervy, but
the boys dug in put in a professional discipline performance
and yeah we got the job done, which is what
we came here to do. But wasn't as pretty as
(36:37):
Friday night was. But sometimes in football you have to
grind out in more difficult games, and that proved to
be the case last night.
Speaker 12 (36:45):
What were the conversations on the beach, particularly in the
first half, as you know, you're banging away being way
can't get the goal they're actually punching above the white
New Caledonia. What are you sort of seeing on the
on the beach and what conversations are you guys saying.
Speaker 14 (36:57):
Well, I think I think it was coming the goal.
You know, we had a couple cleared off the line
hit the woodwork. But obviously in football, especially in a
one off fixture, you know that anything can happen, and
when those don't go in, it obviously gives the opposition
a lift. And then second half, obviously with Woodsy coming off,
you know that any opposition that sees him coming off
(37:20):
the pitch again will have a lift and it will
raise them. But listen, the players that came off the
bench to affect the game and win the game for
us were great, and that shows how much of a
squad game it is these days, and how strong our
squad is. You know that these players come on and
there's no diminishing and performance of anything. It sort of
(37:40):
lifts everyone else and it was great to see, especially
obviously my club teammate Franny coming on and delivering assists
almost straight away was lovely to see and lovely for him.
It's a bit of a full circle moment for him.
Obviously he's had his trials and tribulations over the course
of his career and to get back to where he's
got to his testament to him.
Speaker 12 (38:00):
I was terrific to see him out there. When Chris
came off, he sit beside you on the bench. How
do you console Chris on a moment like ed or
do you just not even try?
Speaker 14 (38:10):
Yeah, I think you're still obviously focused on the job
at hand, And obviously I asked him what it was,
what he thinks he'd done, and he had no idea,
and he was obviously gutted. He wanted to be out
there at the end. He wanted to have scored the
goals to get us to the World Cup. But listen,
all through qualification he's been great and we just hope
that it's nothing too serious for him. He'll go off
(38:30):
and get some scans today. But it was the most
important thing was that we got the job done on
the pitch as a group. And again, you know, it
would have been easy for the lads to sort of
be disheartened seeing him come off the pitch, but the
opportunities then there for others to step up and be counted,
and you know, none more so than box. He getting
(38:50):
his first ever goal. What a vital time to get that.
So again delighted for him, his tender age, that he's
at to get his first international goal in such an
important game. So pleased for him and his family.
Speaker 12 (39:04):
And yeah it was.
Speaker 3 (39:06):
It was great to see.
Speaker 2 (39:08):
