You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Darcy Wildegrave
from News Talk sed Bay.
Speaker 2 (00:41):
How are you, boys, Greg, You're well? Presume you are.
Speaker 3 (00:45):
I hope.
Speaker 2 (00:45):
So for a lot of people, that's the start of.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
A long weekend.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Let's suggest for a few more it isn't. But there
we go is what it is? Right if you're out
driving to your holiday destination. I know this sounds boring,
very mundane and before, but I mean it. The weather
(01:11):
is rubbish. Drive to the conditions. Please keep your distance, mate.
You might be ten minutes late. Better than turning up
on a gurney or not turning up a toll Okay,
not a public service announcement. It's just from me because
you know what I actually care. So look after yourself
out there, AB slow b call, drive to the conditions.
(01:34):
Wishing you the beast. It's coming up eight minutes after
seven here on News Talk ZB on Sports Talk them
Darcy Walter Grave. I went you through until eight o'clock tonight.
A couple of twice interviews for you of an evening.
We're going to end with Matt Pain. Matt Pain, the
supercar driver, and I think his success last weekend went
(01:55):
under the radar like I'm a petrol head, so of
course I watched.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
All of it.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
And what he did at Topel at the four forty
was extraordinary. He picked up the Jason Richards Trophy, he
won the Memorial Trophy, he won two out of the
three races and propelled himself up to third in the championship.
Now no one saw that coming. And the Grove Racing
penrit car, he was extraordinary.
Speaker 4 (02:22):
That.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Being as I haven't got a set up producer for
the day, I'll do what I want. So I'm talking
race cars. Jee, don't you give me the keys because
you know what's going to happen anyway. I'm celebrating supercar success.
This year has been a much better competition than last year.
Number of Kiwi driver, five of them actually involved in that.
Matt Pain will join us to talk about last weekend,
(02:46):
what it means to him and his team. That's coming
up sooner rather than later, if I can, I'm going
to squeeze.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
In some Luke Metcar for you.
Speaker 2 (02:53):
Luke fronted media today ahead of the game against the Broncos,
which is coming up. It's a home game. Is it
go media or Mount Smart or whatever you want to
call it stadium. After what happened against the Storm last week,
the Storm this weekend's got nothing right. They were smashed.
Its press me this time around. Hopefully we can get
(03:14):
a chance to get a few thoughts from Luke Metcalf
and we're going to kick things off with Ethan Blackadder
from the Crusaders. Good Friday, fun and games five past
seven tomorrow. The Blues, who, well they're on the up
and up, aren't they. They're resurging. Is this such a
(03:37):
word as resurging? They are resurgent and who do they face?
The Crusaders in their backyard. This is gonna be huge
because we know blue and White, Red and black, massive
competition and where they're sitting right now, Crusaders trying to
hold on to their top spot, the Blues trying to
(03:59):
get into the playoffs. So much on it.
Speaker 3 (04:01):
We'll talk with Eating.
Speaker 2 (04:02):
Black Adder about that shortly. Also keep you up date
with the Blues war retars. That's the way hen This
is the Trans Tasman Clash for Super Rugby women's supremacy.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
Of course the Blues are one.
Speaker 2 (04:16):
Oh Picky did very well against Matta Tu over the
weekend and they are taking on the war atars out
of Sydney Form and it's gone at no score to date.
Speaker 3 (04:25):
But you know how that's going on.
Speaker 2 (04:27):
That's what we're up to. That's our plan. That's what
we're going to do before that, Liz do this Sport Today,
Evans Sport Today. Wise coach Andrew Webster tells it like
it is. I never understood, you know, team naming Tuesday
or team list whatever.
Speaker 3 (04:46):
I think it's Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
How accurate it's going to be. Well, it's not so
Andrew is basically flipped the bird at it. They want
a team on Tuesday?
Speaker 3 (04:55):
Sweet?
Speaker 2 (04:57):
How about these apples?
Speaker 3 (04:58):
NRL? We had a day off Tuesday.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
I hadn't spoken any of the players, just named the
team name of twenty two that I knew this will
be the best day to any table for a Kirk
Caproll's playing center.
Speaker 3 (05:07):
I can tell you that. So and I'm going to
play too many tricks.
Speaker 5 (05:10):
You know.
Speaker 2 (05:10):
It was the ahead of the day off. Didn't talk
it out like where's a team gives it?
Speaker 3 (05:14):
Gives a sharpie?
Speaker 2 (05:15):
Will you write and on this bit of paper and
sing it off to him ONNYA. Web's the love your
attitude are the Wahenix. That's the Wellington Phoenix women's side.
The wahenis we've lost their mental temple, hasn't been offered
a contract up to two years in the gaffer's role,
So what now, boss?
Speaker 6 (05:32):
Just want to focus on doing the best job I
can this week, making sure we finish in the best
possible way on Sunday against Western United. Then there's probably
going to be twenty four to forty eight hours of
just reflection and relax and then then then we'll get
onto kind of what comes next.
Speaker 3 (05:46):
Yea.
Speaker 2 (05:46):
And of course we've got a case of gian Carlo
and Taliano who's coming to the end of his contract
as well. Let's hope they don't chop two heads in
the same year. Braxton Sorenson McGhee has plenty on her plate.
The Women's Super Rugby champions Finals all go. It's on
right now as before six minutes through. It's at North
(06:07):
Harbor Stadium and the Blues are taking on the Aussie
champs the waratas. Braxton is a shining light in the
women's game.
Speaker 3 (06:15):
Watch her play and.
Speaker 2 (06:16):
She's gleaned everything she possibly can from teammate and ruminant
or she's the goat, isn't she Porsche Woodman quick.
Speaker 5 (06:24):
She's taught me a lot, and it's really good being
in this environment because obviously I'm playing with some of
the best athletes in the world.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
And Ryan Fox is aware of the potential beating he
may take the hands of Dominica Republic's weather. The latest
PGAVN cracks into action there overnight tonight.
Speaker 7 (06:43):
I think I hit a three wood on a part
of three from under two hundred meters, which I haven't
done for a long time, and it was the right pub.
If we have that kind of wind during the week,
the golf course is going to play really brutal.
Speaker 2 (06:54):
And that's the sport today, right he's talking about se
Rugby Pacific. Now fifteen minutes or after seven blackouted joint
us black Out of the seconds, Not the old man,
it's the younger one. Ethan black Out of the Second
joins us now on the program.
Speaker 8 (07:11):
Good evening, Ethan, Good evening, mate, How are you.
Speaker 2 (07:15):
I'm very well looking forward to the weekend. Bit of
a long weekend for us, bit of a break on Friday.
Not for you blokes, though, You've got to suit up
and play some football on good Friday.
Speaker 3 (07:25):
How does that suit with you?
Speaker 8 (07:27):
Yep, for you. Done for us mate. Yeah, we're boot
up Friday and ready for a big contest against the Blues.
So yeah, we're bloody excited.
Speaker 2 (07:36):
I don't believe for a second you don't need any chocolate.
Can't you just like justify it by saying, there's me
some energy when I get out on the park? I mean,
don't you guys do that?
Speaker 8 (07:45):
Yeah, we'll have someone on Saturday after a big game,
I think.
Speaker 2 (07:48):
Yeah, well it will be a big game. Look, this
is massive. You're obviously sitting at the top of the
table right now. Two defeats you what eight six? I
think it is at the moment, you're eight game six victories.
You're just ahead of the Chiefs, whereas the Blues are
there down the bottom looking on up and they're on
a bit of a resurgence right now. So what do
(08:09):
you focus on? Predominantly, what's Pen's been telling you about
what you need to do to make sure you can
stub out the Blues.
Speaker 8 (08:17):
Yeah, it's just about refreshing. You know, we had a
win last week. It was actually a close contest in
the finish. So looking at the Blues again, we've already
played them this year. We had some success up there,
but it doesn't really mean anything. It's about really setting
completely and looking at a Blues team that's actually changed
in the last month, so preparing for a good team.
(08:38):
But at the same time, we're on the way up
to and we're going to we're going out there to
impose that game on them.
Speaker 2 (08:45):
Let's look back to that game last week. You were
sitting reasonably pretty then it kind of fell apart in
the last well ten minutes or so and you were gone.
It was a team yellow another yellow as well. You've
got to look at that space and your old man's
big favorite, this word discipline. It's something you're really got
to look at.
Speaker 8 (09:03):
Yet, yeah, sort of it was our era, right, We
were in a position where we were three tries in
front and then I wouldn't say that it's complacency, it
was just skill set eras and we allowed them to
come back into the game. And then that last ten minutes,
as you say, we were down to third amen and
defending for our lives on the line, and there was
(09:24):
some phenomenal efforts there. But to be honest, we shouldn't
have pot ourselves in that position if we just treasured
the ball and just put belt Moore pressure played on top.
So yeah, some good lessons in that game.
Speaker 2 (09:36):
Well, you know we went wrong. How do you tweak that?
Is it just on the spot on the field? Is
there anything you can do during the week's lead up
to the next game that might help eradicate that?
Speaker 8 (09:46):
It's got a hard one sort of to put your
finger on it. Sort of when you're out there, it's like,
what what's working at the time that we probably should
have probably should have stayed worth a few things rather
than going to quite big plays, especially off line out time.
So yeah, it was just sort of a few years
drop balls or people were not being in the right
spots of that kind of stuff, and we can easily
(10:09):
fix that.
Speaker 2 (10:10):
Well, that's that's good to know. You're not overwhelmed, you're
not daunted by it. It's just a couple of little tweaks.
You guys must be lifted last year this time last
year things went doing particularly well. Do you even look
back at that or is it all eyes forward?
Speaker 8 (10:26):
It's ice forward, to be honest, Like history is called
history and you can look back on it. But we're
a complete different team to last year. Like it's a
year on people have changed, people are playing different rugby.
You can reflect back if you aren't, but personally, I
don't look forward injury wise.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
And it's great to see that your rigor is feeling
pretty good right now, even though you carry on paying
it a little respect, you're tossing it around. But that
was a big problem last year, the fact that you
didn't have a great deal of players to choose from.
So you've got on back now. But what else have
you applied in order to get this result? We have
(11:05):
only like I've won most of your games this year.
Has anything changed in your in your outlook and your
team play? What else is different?
Speaker 8 (11:13):
I don't know. I don't know if you call it
luck or what. But some years, like quite literally, you'll
just have a crapload of injuries. There's no really good
reason for it. Like, yeah, it's a bit of a mystery,
I reckon, But yeah, this year, touch word, I'll just
touch it right now. Year that gotcha? Yeah, yeah, I
just I don't know the physics behind it. But we've
(11:35):
got one thing. We've actually got a lot of real
professionals in this team, and the works they do off
the field around getting their bodies right and all the
recovery things. I think that's actually gone upper level. So yeah,
I'm going to put it down to that.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
Okay, So as far as team tactics are concerned and
attitudes around what you want to do and what's worked
for you, and nothing much has changed there, you can
just apply it because you've got the cattle to do.
Speaker 8 (12:00):
So yeah, yeah, I think so exactly that now we've
been we've been fortunate to this stage that halfway through
the season. So as long as we keep keep looking
after our bodies and being professionals and we can have
more cattle available.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Out of last week, there's a couple of rock stars
you wanted more, I know. I mean, I think he's
just that's like blowing up a lot of people's fantasy leagues.
It's done particularly well. Tell me his story.
Speaker 8 (12:29):
Yeah, he's an amazing, amazing young man. He's been in
this environment for a few years now, and yeah, you're
just seeing the fruits of what he can actually do.
Incredible instinctive rugby player and he's just the joy to watch,
isn't he. And he's play plays with a smile on
his face. But he's a hard man to stop.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Hugely, So I suppose it says to me that he's
been in your system for a while, he's got an
enormous amount of patience and trusted himself that give him
the opportunity. He won't make a mess of it because
it's not like you've been on the ground hoocaers, is it.
Speaker 8 (13:07):
Yeah, Yeah, that's right. Like yeah, Like he came into
the environment as a well two three years ago, you know,
and he ended up playing quite a few games in
his first season where he probably didn't think he was
going to. And I just put that down to like
guys in this position. You know, you've got like Cody
and George Belle and those guys just filtering down their
(13:28):
knowledge and helping him to be better. And then you've
got Dan Perrin helping him hugely. So yeah, they're just
developing players and you're seeing seeing him out there, he's
just playing so well and wrap for him.
Speaker 2 (13:42):
Where you at at the moment with your game, How
comfortable are you with what you're providing right now that
your happy points and where you think you're kind ethan
you can do better?
Speaker 8 (13:52):
Yeah, I'm sort of I've got high standards on myself,
so yeah, I'm constantly trying to improve areas of the game.
So I'd say I'm never satisfied. There's always a couple
of areas in a game you might be half happy with,
but there's always areas to sharpen up. So yeah, I'm
(14:13):
just looking for accuracy and what I'm doing at the moment,
So that's what I'm striving for.
Speaker 2 (14:17):
Dare give you any advice? You get on the bar
and go bro, I've noticed something.
Speaker 8 (14:21):
No, he hasn't lately, but he hasn't the past. Yeah, yeah, yep.
We it's always good to get it second or third opinion,
isn't it, because we all see the game in different ways.
So yeah, it's good bye that.
Speaker 2 (14:33):
A couple of last things before we go, as any
Japanese club have been sending new contracts to sign, are
you going to disappear with everybody else?
Speaker 8 (14:44):
And I haven't received anything from Japan so frant Yeah, no, no,
nothing in that space. No, no, nothing in that space
at the moment. I'm just focused on Yeah, here in
New Zealand at the moment.
Speaker 2 (15:01):
It's what we want to hear. That is great news.
And finally, the biggest threat that the Blues provide, what
is it?
Speaker 3 (15:07):
What are you alerted to.
Speaker 8 (15:09):
And about probably their forwards play. They looks like they've
found a bit of the DNA again, and yeah, just
what their forwards provide, you know, they're around the corner
the physical. Yeah, just just play around that. So that's
what we're preparing for.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Well, you got it last week because it wasn't like
the loose forwards of the Hurricanes were shy and retiring people.
That was huge too, So let's do it again in
the loose on good Friday, Ethan Blackadder. Always a pleasure.
You play well, play hard, play fair, talk soon.
Speaker 8 (15:46):
Thank you very much, mate. You have a great, great way.
Speaker 1 (15:49):
Hear it from the biggest names and sports and men.
Have your sale sports talk on your home of Sports
News Talk.
Speaker 3 (15:57):
Z B two.
Speaker 2 (15:59):
This is a sports look on News Talk ZB Love
chatting to that bloke. He's a good man, no doubt. Yeah,
the old man can't help give him advice from time
to time, but the crusader's a backup and running and
it's like last year didn't actually happen, but it did
now plenty to prove in that space. So incidentally, the
(16:20):
Blues have scored and that women's Trans Tasman Super Game
after sixteen minutes. It is five nil in that. Now,
this is not relevant, particularly to Ethan, but you know
I'm fanboys, so I got him on the show to
talk to him about this game coming up. Rique you
only started this game.
Speaker 5 (16:41):
Now.
Speaker 2 (16:41):
The news came through last night that he's moving, and
I had a bit of a rant about it last night,
about him taking a sabbatical, and I it's not a
sabbatical strictly speaking, it's not a sabbatical. Sabbaticals when you rest, you.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Do something different.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
I mean he's traveling, sure, but he's just traveling to
go to the same job basically. And it's only words.
Speaker 3 (17:06):
I shouldn't get.
Speaker 2 (17:07):
Too cooked about it, but I'm getting a little sick
of it. You're not going on a sabbatical. You're going
to get more money, and that's fine. We don't mind.
And this has been a long time bugbear of mine
that there's a couple in the same act here to
try to get Riko on to talk today. But he
wasn't talking. I say, with Tilley a couple of days ago,
(17:29):
it wasn't talking. It happens all the time, so two
things around this. It's okay to say, hey, it's going
to be a really good experience playing in Ireland. It's
going to be great. But I'm getting paid well and
this is my career, so I'm going and I've played
enough test and ends it are are giving me the
(17:50):
opportunity to go away.
Speaker 3 (17:52):
Why wouldn't I take this?
Speaker 9 (17:56):
There are a few players who do that, but there
are very two players who actually have the guts to
stand up and go this is my career.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
I need to make money. Why I can, and I'm
off ah and the other things are cool too, but
it is over there not making any money.
Speaker 3 (18:16):
Why would he?
Speaker 10 (18:17):
Right?
Speaker 3 (18:17):
Why would he?
Speaker 2 (18:18):
The second thing around this?
Speaker 3 (18:20):
But I'm interested in.
Speaker 2 (18:21):
Your thoughts on this because you know, I'm just a
sports genne and I may have twisted views on this
because I've been smashed by for a couple of decades.
Speaker 3 (18:32):
Now.
Speaker 2 (18:36):
Why don't these players make themselves available to the media.
Speaker 3 (18:42):
I've got a.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Fair idea is that with social media, they would rather
use their own channels to talk with their own direct fans.
But I find it rude. I think it's insulting to
the wider fan base. And there are plenty of rugby
fans out there, older rugby fans who don't indulge in
(19:05):
the instant the like the sugar hat of Instagram, of Twitter, everything.
I don't care. And they rely on regular media outlets
like radio and like TV to keep them up with
Scot's going on now. When players don't want to talk
to the general media about decisions that they've made to
(19:27):
their fans that supporting them right the way through their careers.
Speaker 3 (19:30):
Is it just me?
Speaker 2 (19:32):
Or is that a punch in the nose? Is that
a slap in the face? Is that out and out rude?
Speaker 3 (19:40):
I think it is.
Speaker 2 (19:43):
Eight hundred eighty ten eighty. Your thoughts on that the
Blues are still up five zip over the waratas and
the Women's Transit Tasman Super Rugby champions game. It's eighteen
minutes gone and we will take your calls next on
eight hundred eighty ten eighty responsibilities or players going away? A.
(20:05):
Why don't they tell that's the truth because the B
is about sabbatical. Why don't they come and talk on
regular media?
Speaker 3 (20:14):
You're ignoring people. Stop it as his News talks it. B.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
It's seven twenty six, one hundred and eighty ten eighty.
Speaker 4 (20:25):
You can't say decide.
Speaker 1 (20:38):
The right call? Is your call on eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty sports Talk call on your home of
Sports News talks it buse.
Speaker 4 (20:49):
Sen seven uncles, nobody knows.
Speaker 1 (20:59):
Res of living.
Speaker 2 (21:02):
Last seven sports Dog on News Talking said b Blues
are up twelve nail now over the tars through twenty
two minutes down there trans tasman women's clash Old don't ladies,
and so it's a text around on that as well.
It's what I love about women's rugby is that don't
kick the ball.
Speaker 3 (21:22):
Every thirty seconds.
Speaker 2 (21:24):
That's the level of skill with genuine people, not robots.
Speaker 3 (21:27):
It's a good product to.
Speaker 2 (21:28):
What it is, and the people behind the product are
so real. There are a lot of great male rugby
players out there who are wonderful to talk to and
think and Ethan Black added is onn't right there. But
a lot of them are pre programmed because they've been
told what to do, what to wear, we're to stand,
so on and so forth. Right since they were identified
as a young age as being potential stars, so they
(21:53):
having had time to develop their own personality, they're put
in a box that stayed there. Just shame. But there's
something about the Wahina that they speak their mind. I
think that's that's with women in general, some mass gender
based generalization. But women are easy.
Speaker 3 (22:11):
To talk to that they're more free with their words.
Speaker 2 (22:13):
They understand that communication side, where blokes they kind of
don't because the But that's just the thought on that. Anyway,
we're going to get to the the talks shortly, but
we have got this um and we will be there
(22:37):
on a one hundred and eighty ten eighty lines are open,
Trevor Graham are just around the corner waiting for you.
And a text from John's coming and said, remember we're
in the me me Me, Me me were will they
do what they like because they're always right, They always
know best.
Speaker 3 (22:55):
They seem to forget.
Speaker 2 (22:56):
Without fans spending money, their career wouldn't exist precisely, thank you,
right where were we?
Speaker 1 (23:01):
Oh, we're here, this is news to said the breaking news.
Speaker 3 (23:08):
Whooa, here's one for you.
Speaker 2 (23:10):
Double murderer Mark Lundy has been granted parole. Open Justice
reports he will be released from prison next month. Lundy
was twice convicted of killing his wife, Christine and seven
year old daughter Amber in their Palmston North home in
August two thousand. Danno McClain, Dunnica McLean, excuse me has more.
Speaker 11 (23:32):
The first conviction was in two thousand and two, and
an appeal saw the court increase the non parole period
on Lundy's life sentence to twenty years. The Privy Council
quashed his conviction in twenty thirteen, before a retrial in
twenty fifteen saw him convicted again. Lundy has always maintained
his innocence.
Speaker 1 (23:53):
Forget the ref's call. You make a call on eight
hundred eighty eight Sports Talk on your home of Sports Talks.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Double murderer Mark Lundy granted role.
Speaker 3 (24:06):
Let's get back to sport.
Speaker 2 (24:08):
Now, they Trevor, how are you in this fine good
Friday's Eve.
Speaker 10 (24:13):
I'm fine, mate, I'm fine. That was in the New
mister London.
Speaker 2 (24:16):
It so interesting, is one word, Trevor. Thank you. But
I'm not paid to talk about that.
Speaker 3 (24:22):
So I won't.
Speaker 10 (24:23):
No, I've got strong repoorts on it. But you're right,
we're about sports. Look, just's quickly on the ladies. Yeah,
they're free to talk me out, Doty, but you wait
till they become professional to the level of the men
and they're owned by you know, all sorts of things.
They will be told what to say.
Speaker 2 (24:39):
Yeah, you look, you're probably right. And maybe that's what's
so good about talking there. When I talk to Michael
vanclone Russ yesterday, see one of the the base words
for what they do is freedom, be free. It comes
from how they talk about.
Speaker 10 (24:55):
You're right, it will it will change there. That's the
one hundred percent agree with you about. You know, I've
never been very I don't know whether sypathetics or were,
but I really don't have much sympathy for professional sportsmen.
I mean good, I'm John Gallah, you know, Charles Pirtower.
They just came out and said why they were doing things,
(25:16):
and they say the stupid statements and they expect that
to believe them. And look, you know when a sports
said to me, oh I missed my child's birthday playing
the sport, I'm thinking, so what, I don't care. And
you know another thing that I think I should hear
from was from sportsman Darcy is thanking the sport. You know,
when they retire, the first thing that they should have say,
(25:39):
I want to thank the sport because for most of them,
he's a professional sportsman. For most of them, sport have
given them everything and probably set them and their immediate
children and maybe their mom and dad up for life them. No, no, no, no,
the sport owed them, Darcy, they sre they you know they.
Speaker 2 (26:03):
I'm sorry Breston and sarren Ston. Make has just scored
under the posts. Wow they're now up seventeen Neil after
twenty seven minutes. Sorry, carry on that bread.
Speaker 10 (26:16):
No no, no, that's all sweet, But no, no, I
just hear you know, you know, I mean, does rugby
the sport of rugby? And I'm talking about the fans
that own the game and that I mean, for an example,
do you think they owe Daniel Carter or Richie McCord anything?
Now this is nothing yet just to guys. I mean,
they provided entertainment. But do you think the sport and
(26:37):
the fans owe those two players anythink? Actual fact, I
think they owe the fans and the sport something I.
Speaker 2 (26:45):
Suppose kind of though in a situation like two guys
there were that good and did so much to bring
the profile of the game up and make it immensely popular,
maybe the game does owe them a wee bit, but
it's in very rare cases because those two were out
now breaks and I think in Richie mccre he doesn't
even try and cash in on any of that. He's
pretty much disappeared on my Veda mon air recently was
(27:08):
when he was talking about adventure racing.
Speaker 10 (27:11):
Yeah. No, well, I mean, you're right and the lovely
people in that, but no, I just never get too
sympathetic about professional sports. You know, they get barely injured
in there. Of course I do, like I doe, not
professional sports and not a rubbish or I missed my family,
couldn't have this Christmas with my family this year. And
then when I tied in the thirty three thirty five,
the multimillionaires and they can spend the rest of their
(27:32):
life every day of the year with them. Another thing
I want to say, Darcy, I'm not too sure whether
woman's rugby is a great product. Just a thought.
Speaker 2 (27:40):
No, no, that's fine. A man, A lot of people
think the same way, Trevor. I'm going to argue with
you about that. I really enjoy it as a product
because it's so It's because I was talking to a
not a colleague, kind of a colleague, some guy who
works up in finance in the building, and he was
talking about the Super Rugby final of the weekend the
Opeki finals, said how much he enjoyed it because he
(28:01):
said it was refreshingly different. Wasn't collision based, it was
there's just a different style. And I think that's the
key about women's rugby. You can't compare it with men's rugby.
It's a different way of playing the game. And if
you can separate that out, if you can relax in that,
(28:22):
you're going.
Speaker 3 (28:23):
To enjoy what you see.
Speaker 2 (28:24):
Yeah, a little slower sometimes it's a little more telescoped,
but it brings a different hit than men's rugby. Me
I really enjoy it, did I Graham?
Speaker 12 (28:38):
Yeah, get a darcy. Just picking up on your comments
with regard to the use of the media by the
sports guys and releasing their stuff through social media. I mean,
traditional media like yourself, radio newspapers can't really be surprised
(28:58):
at us because worldwide newspapers, TV, radio magazines are diving
and social media is climbing, and these guys they are
using social media, So I mean, I don't think that
you should really be surprised at the way that these
guys are doing it. Maybe their managers should be talking
(29:21):
to them a little bit more and saying, well, you know,
you think of the boomers, but these guys aren't really
interested in the boomers. They are there in the thing,
worrying about how their hair looks, how their bodies, haircuts
are done, and all this crap. There's too much fashion,
there's too much imagery.
Speaker 2 (29:40):
Yeah, I mean, that's the way of the future, that's
how they build and in a gram I'm not surprised,
but it doesn't mean to say. I can't say I
don't like it because I think I talk for a
lot of people who feel distant. But because of the
attachment of social media with this generation, they're like you
mentioned boomers.
Speaker 3 (29:58):
I'm not a boomer.
Speaker 2 (29:59):
Look, I'm on Instagram, I'm on social media, but I'm
in this industry, so of course IM going to say something.
Speaker 3 (30:04):
But I think.
Speaker 2 (30:05):
It's it's very it's my opic, it's too focused on
too small amount, and that's manifestly rude.
Speaker 12 (30:15):
Well, again, this is the players. They're very into it.
They're very into themselves. I'm the boomer. I certainly wasn't
in fearing that you're a boomer, but as the guys
managing these people that have to tell them, these guys
are just too focused on themselves. And perhaps that's the
right thing to do to get the most out of
(30:36):
these athletes to be the supreme athlete they want to be.
But yeah, communication, it's just simply the way these kids
are talking to themselves and to their acquaintances. The end
of story.
Speaker 2 (30:49):
Yeah, An, your Graham, thanks very much for bringing out Again.
I say that I know what's happening. I know it exists,
I know how this works. Don't have to like it right, Unfortunately,
I've been given a platform to stand up on a
rant and scream and wave my fist. I'm just looking
up at the rug being thirty one minutes down. I'm
(31:09):
not quite sure it as I can't see one of
the Blues players injured. The weather is hideous, it is.
It's flooding from the sky, atmospheric river, atmospheric Niagara falls
nineteen that knell Blues over Waratahs. Up next on the program,
I'm going to revel and race cars because I can
(31:31):
that Pain had a magnificent weekend. No one saw this coming.
I expect eated neither, but that was quite something else
in Topoor. Incidentally, I've just seen something on social media. Yeah,
social media, Apparently the storm has stopped the ship that's
full of containers, which is full of supercars from leaving
(31:54):
the boat stuck there can't move. The race in Tasmania
is not for two or three weeks. I think it'll
be okay, But Lucky Jes wouldn't want to tip that over,
would you?
Speaker 3 (32:08):
At that boat?
Speaker 2 (32:10):
Is his news dog's ab Matt payin up next to
It's nineteen minutes.
Speaker 3 (32:16):
Week and I don't want a fucking fower.
Speaker 2 (32:34):
Said now by Matt Pain out of Grove Racing and
the pen right race car. Good evening, Matt, how are
we very very well? Not as good as you? What
are we kend in Tope? And I get the feeling
that it kind of went under the radar weebit because
there was so much sport on last weekend. But that
was an outstanding weekend for you. I mean you could
(32:55):
have done better. You could have won the second race too.
Speaker 3 (32:58):
That was pretty good. Yeah.
Speaker 5 (33:01):
I was actually pretty guided thinking back on it, because like.
Speaker 4 (33:05):
We we had really good speed on.
Speaker 5 (33:07):
The super soft that was and that was the tie
for the second race, and I just butchered the last
quality lap which ended up making us start a little
bit further down. And then yeah, like we Honestly, we
probably would have had a chance to win all three races,
but it was a bit cutting. But I'll still take
(33:27):
two wins anyway, So that's definitely a.
Speaker 3 (33:29):
Positive I suppose with tope.
Speaker 2 (33:31):
On the nature of the track surface as well, it's
not necessarily vital that you qualify and pole, I mean
it helps, but you can actually chop through with the
nature of the track as it tires.
Speaker 5 (33:43):
Yeah, it is a little bit like that, Like there's
definitely a big passing advantage when you have better ties
than obviously the cars in front, but it is it
is a pretty.
Speaker 4 (33:54):
Tough track to pass.
Speaker 5 (33:56):
Conventionally, like there's not many corners where it's sort of
standard passing.
Speaker 4 (34:03):
Actually know it probably is, but like just with.
Speaker 5 (34:06):
Especially with the super soft race, like the tires literally
felt like they lasted for probably four or five laps
and then you were in the hurt box a lot,
and it was just it was cool racing. I think
it was really good. It really made you try really
hard to keep the tire on it, and it was
just something that you know, like we experience all the time,
(34:28):
but not quite to that level.
Speaker 2 (34:30):
Team thing to just stick your nose on the inside
break late and just dive in there and see what happens.
And from a fan perspective, Matt, we love that.
Speaker 5 (34:39):
Yeah, it's it's pretty cool. Like I think the racing
is really good on the weekend as well. Like we've
seen that the racing's definitely gotten bitter for this year, and.
Speaker 4 (34:50):
I think the rules, not so much the rules, but just.
Speaker 5 (34:53):
The penalties and things like that have probably been subsided
a little bit just because you know, people have realized
how cool the racing can be and how it it
can be with a little bit more bumping and rubbing
and things like that, and I think everyone's really enjoying
that part of it. You know, it produces a good show,
(35:14):
It produces good entertainment, like we saw, and I think
that's definitely going to carry on into later in the
year and you'll probably see even even more call races.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
You know.
Speaker 2 (35:24):
Well, I'm fan first broadcast a second. I say I
went off because of it last year because it didn't
have that same flavor about it, but yeah, this year
it's starting to come. What about parity, there's the age
old argument about parity. Is that still relevant because I
know some drivers go.
Speaker 3 (35:41):
Oh, it's got to be sorted out.
Speaker 2 (35:42):
Other drivers go, it's fine, just race. Where do you
sit on this one?
Speaker 4 (35:46):
I mean, it's definitely a difficult question.
Speaker 5 (35:48):
I've always been more on the kind of like let's
just let's let the drivers race and you know, the
proper technical people to sort it out. But yeah, I
mean it is the question for Gen three. You know,
everyone's been talking about it from day dot. But it's
it's certainly I would be lying if I said it
(36:10):
it's it wasn't still a thing. I think, you know,
from where I sit and where I sort of stand
in the racing, and there probably is a little bit
of a sort of difference between the motors and that.
But like, to be honest, we have been racing these cars,
but this is our third year now and it still
(36:32):
doesn't stop, you know, the Ford Mustangs from winning.
Speaker 4 (36:36):
You know, we were.
Speaker 5 (36:37):
There was only one ship that got on the podium
all three races, and it was cam Hill on the
Sunday race, finishing seconds.
Speaker 4 (36:44):
So it's certainly interesting.
Speaker 5 (36:47):
I'm not sure if that's just down to the quality
of the teams on the Blue Oval side. I think
I think there are a lot of good drivers in
the in the four teams whether or not that makes
the difference, I'm.
Speaker 4 (36:59):
Not sure, but it's a tough question.
Speaker 5 (37:01):
And I think like supercars is constantly evolving and trying
to work it out and make it closer.
Speaker 4 (37:09):
So I think everyone's doing a pretty good job.
Speaker 2 (37:12):
You've got up to third in the championship. I didn't
say it come out of nowhere, but you elevated very
very fast, and with the condition if you can't and
your team and what you've been given, you've got what
Tasmania you're coming up soon. How strong is your faith
that you can stay up the top and keep fighting
championship wise for the rest of the season, because it's
(37:32):
still pretty early days.
Speaker 5 (37:33):
Mat Yeah, look it's only the third round and we're
sort of honing through this sprint series. I think it's
a really it's been a really big positive for us
to have to have a really good round in New Zealand,
where we probably felt like last year we didn't. We
weren't quite on top of the car, so and I
think that's just a combination of things with the new
(37:55):
tire and the setup evolution we had over last year
and also this year.
Speaker 4 (37:59):
So it definitely shows that we've improved year on the year.
Speaker 5 (38:05):
But it's tough because the next three rounds we're going
into particularly basically the three tracks we really struggled at
last year, and those were really the only three tracks
we sort of struggled at. But it's sort of it's
hard because we've elevated ourselves into a position of contention
(38:28):
now and I think for us we just need to
work even harder going into these next few rounds that
we can stay on top of it. But like I
said that, the evolution and the improvement on our car
year on year, I think it's going to make these
next few tracks a little bit different for us, and
I think we've got a bit better of a picture
of what we need to target going into these tracks
(38:49):
from a setup point of view as well.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
So you're in Tasmania in a couple of weeks time
after that you head over to the tired Destroyer of
Perth and then you at Darwin. So there are three
races you didn't work too well last time.
Speaker 5 (39:03):
No, No, we struggled, We really struggled it Tonia. It's
a tough track like it's it's basically three corners and
it's and that the qualifying times are ridiculously close because
the track is quite small, so it's definitely quirky. It's
it's really a place where I'd really like to go. Well,
(39:25):
I really love Tasmania as a as a state. It's
it reminds me a lot of New Zealand for how
it looks like. But yeah, I just it's hard to
like like a place where you just haven't done well
in the past. So hopefully this year we can turn
it around and make it one of our strong grounds.
(39:46):
But I don't see any reason why we couldn't. I
think we just need to work pretty hard at identifying
what we need to target.
Speaker 2 (39:53):
Matt Payne, Grove Racing pen right race car. It's a forward,
it's my stang. It's in supercars, joins us. Now are
you speaking Simmons planes. That's like a fifty something second lap.
It's super super fast and it's got the best hairpin
in world motor sport. That from a again a viewer's
point of view, maybe not for mechanics or a guy
(40:16):
who's got to look after the dens and the carson
so great because that turn is wild. How's that best approached?
You have to take it like I suppose, lap by lap,
depending on where the traffic's at.
Speaker 5 (40:29):
Yeah, it's pretty tough when you're in the start of
the race and you're backed up a little bit.
Speaker 4 (40:33):
There's always a big, big congestion going in there.
Speaker 5 (40:36):
It certainly it's definitely what kind of creates your lap
time as well, how how best you can turn around it,
how good your drivers out of it, and how good
you're breaking is. So it's tough like an and because
that's really the defining corner on the track, you really
have to work hard at it.
Speaker 4 (40:54):
So it's it's definitely character building. I'd say you hear
it from.
Speaker 1 (41:00):

Speaker 3 (41:55):
Good listen. I'll tell you.
Speaker 2 (41:56):
Plenty of texts and darcy regarding the players and media.
It's fine and I don't have a problem to do
it on their own channels. They're direct fans. No one
trust New Zealand media anymore. When they do front up
to the media, they guess the same generic questions that
they get us every time. It's the same people you're
asking the front up. Then they tell your plans and news.
(42:17):
Then you tear them apart when they have a bad
time or spell playing their profit. They owe it to us.
I'm not buying any of that. We the fans put
fans at the center of the room. They can't handle
a bit of criticism. Whoopedi, whoop yeah, and Steve said,
look to us even at the Ducks.
Speaker 3 (42:37):
They like this with.
