Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the Sports Talk podcast with Dancy Wildergrave
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
It'd be proud to announce that our next guest is
Mark Howie Howard. He joins us to talk about cricket
and a wee bit of an incident with a banger.
Good a Howie, how are you great?
Speaker 3 (00:23):
To speak to you mate as always, and hello to
your entire audience out there. Yeah, it's amazing how quickly
news spreads in the modern world of media and social media,
isn't it. It's frightening in some ways.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Did you start it off? Did you, like, you know,
send a picture of you smashed in head or not? No?
Speaker 4 (00:38):
I did not do any of that. No.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
We were doing a shoot for Toyota and the aim
was to hit the stumps and Brett was boyling and
I was keeping and he hit the top of off
as he does, and as I caught the ball, I
felt blood pouring out of my head and it was
the bail that had just sort of banged in my head.
Speaker 4 (00:54):
So up the Rabi went, got some stitches and got
on with it.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
But yeah, if I have a scar, I will be
always able to say I got it from Brett Lee say,
but all is well, All is well.
Speaker 2 (01:05):
They had hi from a bail? Do they do that
or not?
Speaker 5 (01:09):
Ah? Well, there was a bit of concern on the
shoot because oh and S is a pretty big major
thing these days.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
But all the rules were followed and everything was checked
off on so now I'm good to go. I think
some people have probably enjoyed if I did have to
miss the Test due to concussion. Those that don't rate
my commentary, but hopefully there's a few that are happy.
Speaker 4 (01:25):
I'm still there.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
We're all happy that here, and I'm happy because it
means I get start out all night listening to my
mate because it's a day night test match coming up. Now.
I don't know about you personally, myself, I don't like them.
It's too much of a gamble. It's a crap shoot
day night is I don't think it's a true representation
of Test cricket. There, I've got that out of my system.
What do you think of this new fangled way of
playing Test cricket?
Speaker 4 (01:47):
The cricker part of it.
Speaker 3 (01:48):
I quite enjoy when Jimmy Andsen comes in in our
ashes at that twilight period and he's swinging the ball
around the corner a couple of years ago. It was
one of the most exhilarating things I've ever seen. Obviously,
Australia bowled out in here for forty six in a
similar situation on the last tour. But if the Aussies
are facing Boomra, it will be incredible to watch.
Speaker 4 (02:08):
I do prefer day Test matches.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
I love getting there early and having the days play
and then you roll around Adelaide and it's such. It's
a good venue as there is for a Test match
in Australia, possibly in the world. All the restaurants are
full of people talking about cricket, like the town is
obsessed with cricket, so you lose that social part of it. Afterwards,
I think the bowlers and say, yep, we love it.
The bat is probably not quite so much. But it's
(02:31):
going to be an enthralling Test match. Obviously, after Australia
got absolutely smoked in the first Test. There is some
fortune and some skill bowling at the right time. But
if it's Boomer against the Aussie top six underlies, wow,
it's going to be worth a look.
Speaker 5 (02:46):
Mark.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
How does that affect the decision at the toss? You
see it comes into it to degree but I suppose
you don't know how long people are going to last
out in the middle when the SWAP's going to be.
But it is an issue. It's something that's worked through, surely.
Speaker 3 (02:59):
Yeah, I think it becomes more in a declaration sense
if you're in control with the bat. Obviously, if you
win the toss and back tomorrow, you don't want to
be bowling, no matter how good the advantages, because it
means you've been castled in four hours. I think it
more comes especially in the second innings. You might be
six down, leading by X number runs and you think, right, well,
(03:20):
we'll forego the extra forty runs we're going to get
with the bat to have a crack with the new ball,
because it's.
Speaker 5 (03:26):
Incredible that the ball can be not doing much, doesn't
even have to be the new ball, and there's just
a period just on dusk when all of a sudden
Mitchell style his record is incredible with a pink ball.
It's like there's the flick of a switch and all
of a sudden, the ball starts moving and talking.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
So I think it is more revolved around a declaration
and being forecasting where the game is going to go.
Probably a couple of sessions ahead, so I think the
Skippers probably have to look a little bit further down
the track than they normally do when.
Speaker 2 (03:53):
It comes to team selection. How much do the Australian
selectors look at what happened first time round on Perth
and do you think there'll be wholesale changes? Are there
and knee jerk bunchmark.
Speaker 3 (04:05):
No, I don't think so much. I think you know
they're the World Test champions. A lot of this team
one to fifty over World Cup pretty much a year ago.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
Obviously the top order a lot more runs.
Speaker 3 (04:15):
The one force change will be hazeled out with that
slight side strain, which is a concern because it's a
quick turnaround to the Brisbane Test and as you know,
made side issues for bowlers they normally seem to hang around.
So Scotty Bowling gets an opportunity. Australia won't lose anything
of that. Scotty's fantastic, going to be great with the
pink ball. Their concern is Mitchell marsh there's a concern
(04:36):
that he has a back issue to prevent him bowling,
whether he bowls or not, So I imagine Australia pick
him as a batter anyway, and he bats number six
because he's been scoring as many runs, if not more
than anyone, so they just won't get any ohs out
of Mitchell Marsh, I don't think, but you know, you
know there's new cricketers come in, Brendan Doggett, who a
lot of your audience wouldn't have heard a great deal about.
(04:57):
And then Bo Webster, who's old school. He's been getting
wickets and runs in the Sheffield Shield, so it's good
to see the Sheffield Shield still has currency. So if
Marsh wasn't able to get up, all of a sudden,
your audience will be watching out a lot of Australians
watching a bloke called Bo Webster who bats and bowles.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
He used to buy offspin, that's how much of it
all around her he is.
Speaker 5 (05:14):
And a couple of years ago he went to pace
and he's got wickets and runs in Shield cricket, so
he's I think they jokingly call him Gary Sobers because
he can bowl fast, he can bowl.
Speaker 4 (05:23):
Spin and he can bat.
Speaker 3 (05:24):
So you know, if Marsh doesn't get up, I think
it'd be great to see a debutante who's gone on
a hard road to get to this point, so be
interesting to see what happens.
Speaker 4 (05:33):
But I think Marshall be right.
Speaker 2 (05:34):
Oh Mark, how would I be stoked if my nickname
was Gary Sobers? I mean, how good? What a great
thing to do with the benefit of hindsight looking back
at what happened to Australia, what they didn't do. Is
there some way you underline what the key to maybe
success is where they have to lived.
Speaker 3 (05:51):
I think the top six needs to make runs, don't they.
You know you're not India over. You know we arrive
in Perth, India's bowled out for one hundred and fifty.
You think, right, Australi as ahead of the game. Here,
they make three fifty, they win the Test. They lost
wickets on that first day. They lost wickets in a
hell of a hurry. So I think getting bold out
by Boomra on that first day is where the Test
(06:12):
really turn against them. If they were able to battle
that out, they would have gotten the better of the.
Speaker 4 (06:16):
Day to pitch. So it comes down to the top
order runs.
Speaker 3 (06:19):
Kawaja obviously missed out, Larbashane is the one that they're
talking about.
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Smith missed out and McSweeney.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
So the top four may I don't know what do
they make less than fifteen between them? It was the
lowest top four score for a long time in Australian
Test cricket. So Smith looked really good in the one
day as I expect Marnus to get run so hopefully
they can turn it around pretty quickly.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
But Marnus is under the pump.
Speaker 3 (06:39):
But you haven't you know, I haven't seen a man
prepare and work as hard as Marnasy in any sport,
let alone cricket that I've had the privilege of working on.
So there's no guarantees in Test cricket. But I reckon
Martos will get runs and that'll help the strain top
order and set things up a little bit more at
the start.
Speaker 2 (06:55):
And do you likely changes of inning?
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Well, they're just that good.
Speaker 2 (07:00):
No, no, Mark, Hell, they're not there. We wet them
at home. Come on.
Speaker 5 (07:05):
Well, it's great point that it's counts intuitive that India
shouldn't be dealing up spinning wickets and I think they've
learned that because it brought the kiweeze into the game
with Santana getting seven and yeah, I think India it
sounds ridiculous. A better suitor on Australian pitchers than vastly turning,
spinning wickets. So they've got should McGill to come in
(07:28):
at number three, he of the beautiful cover drive. They've
got their captain, Row Hitch, I'm going to come in.
They didn't pick Judja or Ashwyn, and Shabby's back in
the country soon, possibly playing in Brisbane. So they are
bringing They're not bringing back a couple of blokes that
are okay, they are bringing back genuine superstars of world cricket.
Of interesting to see if Ashvin or Jdays you get
a run so India on paper you never know. But
(07:49):
India on paper are only stronger. They regain their captain,
they regain their number three and their premier fast by
thelongside boomers not too far away, so they will be
a stronger side, which is a frightening situation for the
Australian side in many ways.
Speaker 2 (08:03):
I reckon Mark Howard. I think I heard you hesitate.
I think you're almost speechless for a beat there when
you thought about what New Zealand did to Ndia. I'm
going to hold that for a long, long joint.
Speaker 5 (08:15):
I loved it though, I love watching Test cricket in India.
I was cheering as hard as anyone for the kiwis
at test match where it's spinning, it's brilliant to watch.
And then I tuned in waiting to see New Zealand
smoke England. And I haven't seen the result of that
first Test.
Speaker 4 (08:29):
How did that go? Said the time, it's a tough game.
It's a tough game cricket.
Speaker 5 (08:34):
But in all seriousness, what New Zealand did Australia has
been trying to do for fifty years in India and
never done it.
Speaker 4 (08:40):
So I remember speaking to Daniel.
Speaker 3 (08:42):
Vettori about it at one of the One Days and
said to him where does this sit in the history
of New Zealand sport as far as performances, and he said, well,
there's the America's Cup, there's the Bledislow and the World
Cups that the Woldbies have done. But for a team performance,
in his mind, it was good a performance by anyone
wearing the colors of New Zealand. And this is a
(09:02):
man that knows his sports, so you know, full credit.
Speaker 4 (09:05):
I don't say it.
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Like I think it was a remarkable achievement and as
good in achievement as we've seen.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
By New Zealand. Well, what do you think?
Speaker 5 (09:11):
Is it as good as we've seen from a New
Zealand sporting team?
Speaker 2 (09:13):
Possibly the best?
Speaker 5 (09:15):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (09:15):
I think really that long and away from home after
getting beaten by Sri Lanka a new captain being was
stunning and the pitch is prepared all day. Maybe don't
ask Gruby's shasty about it because he just refuses to
give him any credit. But that's another story. Hey, how
he games? How's that going for? Has the podcast role?
And what you got coming up? Anything big?
Speaker 5 (09:36):
Yeah, it's good at the marks we had Glenn Weir.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
It's sort of cricket season. So Glenn Maxwell came out
last week.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
Travis Head came out today and really opened up about
how bad is his hand was. In the World Cup
obviously he was left out of the side. Then he
came back and he made those runs against New Zealand
against arm Shah. But we talk about his innings in
the World Cup final. But he was talking about his
catch to get Sharma the first wicket to get Row
hit and he said it was the first time he
(10:01):
caught a ball. Hadn't caught a ball in training because
his hand was causing so many problems, So that's an
interesting one. And then the next episode is and it's
been recorded, is with Marnas, who is as passionate, deep
thinking cricket loving personally. You know, you're bloke at the
local creit club that just wants to bat in the
nets and talk about cricket and he's there till seven
(10:22):
o'clock at night every night after training in his life
of the cricket club. And he's just the cricket obsessed.
That's what Marnus is. But he does it on the
national level. So there's a few good episodes coming up.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
So hopefully I need to get some more Kiwis on though,
I need to get RICHI mccorum.
Speaker 1 (10:34):
You know what you do?
Speaker 2 (10:35):
Well, you know I thought I did, but I'd say
Manus sleeps in his coffin. He's that much of a nuffy,
but that's not a bad thing at all, how he games.
We find all good podcasts downloaded. Have we listen, and
thanks very much for your time. One last sentence in
the rose Ball test as being a Lee calls it
(10:58):
you guys are chance you're going to win this?
Speaker 5 (11:00):
Yeah? We win, we win, and it becomes one all
and hopefully India wins another one in Australia into another
one and we get to the SCG to a piece
and it doesn't get washed out in Sydney, which it
typically does.
Speaker 3 (11:12):
So that'd be the perfect result for cricket fans. I
reckon too all going into the last Test, which would
be absolute box office.
Speaker 2 (11:18):
Watch your over rates. How were they're coming down the line? Yeah,
krn of Bosky, Hey, thanks for your time mate. As always,
you go well, look after yourself and make sure you
keep that head wound well salved so you don't end
up with a scar.
Speaker 3 (11:32):
Well well, if I have a scar from Brittley, I'll
be pretty happy. So I love you to speak to
as always, mate. I hope they went over there in
New Zealand. Enjoys it on Fox Cricket.
Speaker 1 (11:38):
