Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldegrave from Newstalks EDB to get the news for now.
It's all about sports the All Sport Breakfast thanks to GJ. Gunderhos,
new Zealand's most trusted homebuilder, News Talks EDB.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
He looks at me on the All Sport Breakfast twenty
four past eight. Well, we're going to have a bit
of a focus on racing now because it's such a
busy time for racing up and down the country. Some
of those boutique, beautiful race tracks get cut it out
for some special summer meets. But also big news in
the racing world in the last twenty four hours or
so with champion New Zealand jockey Oppy Bosson retiring after

(00:47):
I distinguished several decades in the sports. Aidan Rodley out
of tab track siders with us morning to you Aiden.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
Your morning, Adam, have things with you?

Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, not bad? Well there this news tell us about
sort of how it's been received in the industry over
the past twenty four hours or so.

Speaker 3 (01:02):
Regarding OPI, Yeah, it's obviously been now a lot of
tributes to paid to one of our greatest ever jockeys.
His records outstanding. I think it's called many by surprise,
especially he was on ninety nine Group one wins. So
I only went away from bringing up a century. But
I spoke to Opia yesterday and he said, basically he'd

(01:23):
given all he had to give. It was just the
right time to move on and he's now going to
retire and move on to the next phase of his life.
But he look through his record. You remember the great
rides that he produced, and undoubtedly he was world class
and he had a retirement of one of New Zealand

(01:44):
racing's greats.

Speaker 2 (01:45):
Yeah, and you've always had a lot to do with him.
Eight and just give us, give us a bit of
an insight into his worked, his dedication to you know,
the sport that he clearly just had an amazing amount
of success.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
And yeah, obviously I've worked with Opie for the last
ten years as his writer's agent and we work closer together.
One thing about OPI he just such a genuine guy.
He just doesn't have a bad bone in his body.
He's probably done some things that he's regretted over the time,
but you know, he's just such a likable, very popular

(02:17):
and you know, you'd see those Kadak a million nights,
the biggest nights that became in New Zealand racing where
you know the boys get paid group with the hundreds
together chanting and one as he came back after winning
what I think five Kadak a million two year old
races in a row, so obviously he'd worked really hard.
He was never a lightweight jockey. I remember before I

(02:42):
was even involved with him, watching him when the Victorian
Oaks from Flemington had gone over there as part of
a trip and here he comes back as seventeen year
old jockey winning one of the biggest races during Melbourne
Cup week and he really stamped this mark right from
the word go. And his career, you know, we saw
as you know, just the way he held himself when

(03:05):
the pressure was on. It never phased him. He wrote
imperatorist to nine group one wins in the last couple
of years, which is amazing. It's called for Cup right on.
Mongolian Kahn was just one for the ages and one
of Australia's major races. He produced just the probably the
right of his career. But outside that he's just an

(03:26):
absolute pro and unfortunately there will be many news gentlemen
who will be crying into the morning cups of coffee
with the news today. Yeah, and it's all right.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
And speaking of today, what have we got sort of
looking at some of the main meats. I see there's
timidou Rottadua. There'll be a bit of excitement around the
traps there.

Speaker 3 (03:45):
Yeah. As you said earlier, Adam, it is the time
of year where we get around to a lot of
those country tracks and the Christmas crowds come out pro Christmas.
It's all about Christmas at the races and getting the
sort of the businesses along and having their work doss
and that really well received. This time of year is
just more about the holiday crowds and they'll normally turn up,

(04:07):
turn up in their shorts and their bucket ats and
just enjoy a really good day's racing. So it'll also
do it today. Nice card there, really nice race day
there as well, and the graph Track Harness as well
at Westport as well. And then of course we get
through this period with plenty of other meetings. We've got
a wag Anuis tomorrow to topor for Cup Day there

(04:29):
on the thirty s New Plymouth on the thirty first
and then back down sleep in year's day. So some
really good racing coming up. The next big day of
racing is at Trentham on the fourth of January, which
does speature the telegraph, and that is just going to
be a telegraph of the ages New Zealand's best sprinters
and we've got some real depth in our sprinters at
the moment. They'll all assemble at strength and for what

(04:51):
will be a terrific race on the fourth of January.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Yeah, looking forward to all that coming up over the
next couple of weeks at and appreciate your time. Thanks
so much. I have a great weekend and yeah, all
the best, all all the punts and tips across the weekend.

Speaker 3 (05:04):
Yeah, good on Adam. And it's all people out there,
your listeners who have supported OPI through his career. I
know he's very grateful. You know, he's sort of said
that yesterday's one of the things he's going to miss
most is an interaction with the public. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (05:19):
Great, and he sent he had done very well with
that Aiden. Thanks for your time. Aid and Robby. They're
from tab track Side, who is also Opie Boston's manager
for the last stages of his career. So yeah, great
insight there from mar Aid and Robley out of TB
track sides on the career. The thirty or so year
career of Opie Boston finishing up as announced yesterday twenty

(05:42):
