Speaker 2 (00:22):
V nineteen past seven. Here on the All Sport Breakfast,
we'll turn our attention now to a league men's football.
Both Auckland FC and the Wellington Phoenix are inaction today
is part of round ten of the competition. Auckland still
the competition leaders, but they have the tougher way trip
to Central Coast today, looking to bounce back from their
heavy four NIERL loss last weekend. The Phoenix, yeah, things
(00:46):
aren't looking great for them. We'll see on a bit
of a losing streak hit with more injuries as well
to Tim Payne and Marco Rojas when they look to
break their run of three straight defeats when hosting Newcastle
at Sky Stadium and Wellington from five this afternoon. Well,
let's look at both teams, both teams chances and well
how both teams feared last week and recovering from those results.
(01:09):
Joining us now is former whites Now Sky Sports commentated
Jacob Spoonley, morning to your Jacob. I guess fair to say,
pretty important day for both these teams, don't you think,
and favorite.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Words be there to get into the dictionaries and that
has bounced back ability both sides and desperate need of
showing resilience that for the Phoenixes to find them over
the last couple of years and for Auckland has really
been a platform of much they're built from in their
enormical season.
Speaker 2 (01:43):
Exactly. All right, Well, let's talk the phoenix hosting the
Newcastle Jets. Firstly, obviously news in the last twenty four
hours or so, Jacob they won't have Marco Rojas might
be out for a little bit longer as well, but
also Tim Pain missing after a bit of a foot
niggle and training through the week. How much of a
setback is this for them to experienced players not featuring today.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Consider both of these players, they're the exact sort of
individual that Gean Carlo Italiana would want to turn to
in the circumstances. Marpo aurore OFAs in the snapshots that
we've seen of him so far this season, has demonstrated
why chief he wants to build the attack around his
skill set. He is also somebody that is the point
(02:27):
of difference in the league, if we being honest, coups.
He has the ability to elevate the Phoenix's player makes
them a real headache for oppositions. He's also exactly the
sort of player that will attract the attention which will
create space for your other attacking propositions. And Costa Barbarussis
who has been deadly this year in front of goal,
and Hibikiaschege as well, who keeps on popping up withs
(02:50):
of his own. Both that of the main thing that
chief you'll be looking for from this game is defensive solidity.
And Tim Pain is somebody that has provided that. He's
got the leadership alongside Alex Ruffer, and he is a
seasoned All White. So when you look across a sense
of line for Wellington Senex this season, Who've got Josh
(03:14):
Olomk who's been a new introduction, Sam Sutton who has
been constantly battling injury, and then you've got either Isaac
Hues or Matt Sheridan, a youngster who's been introduced into
this back line trying to take fill the shoes of
Finn Sermon alongside Tim Payne. That's that's three individuals in
this back five unit that are either new or adjusting
(03:38):
to life in the alex So he's somebody that chiefly
would be desperate to call upon and unfortunately it seems
like for this particular fixture, we hope not for next
couple of fixtures. He's someone that literally is going to
be on ice.
Speaker 2 (03:52):
Yeah, indeed, and Newcastle there are a couple of points,
a couple of places behind the phoenix on the table.
This is one of the phoenix. You know, ready would
have been wanting to have their best team possible, to
get a win at all costs given the last couple
of weeks.
Speaker 3 (04:04):
Right, look at it. It's a game that is winnable
for the Phenix. So I'm not going to say six
point er yet, coops, but it is a game which
in my mind could helped separate what I considered to
be the A League paloton at the moment. I think
it was last weekends only awkward FC dropped points in
(04:25):
the top six everybody else to maintain their position, and
a number of the teams that were just outside of
the top six they kept up their own momentum. So
we can look at the likes of Western United as example,
who took points off Aukland FC as putting themselves in
that kind of conversation for five, six, seven eight. The
Phoenix unfortunately, with their run and form, which is the
(04:46):
courus of the competition, they're now in a situation where
they desperately want to take points off side around them,
but also to your point, start correcting their season. And
I think in a lot of ways, mate, it's a
transient side. We were so happy and we celebrated the
side from last season. There's been a lot of change,
(05:07):
both positive in terms of the players that they've moved on,
the exciting young kV prospects, the players that they've sold,
and the return to profit to the club now the
players that they let go. And so we've got this
new kind of clay that Chief has been able to
play with and we haven't really seen the final form
yet through injury and also through a kind of changing
of the system. So I think what Chief you will
want heading into twenty twenty five, if you were to
(05:29):
ask him about his news resolution, it's going to be consistency.
He wants a consistent system. He wants a consistent foundation
and I think more than anything, he wants consistent return
from his football inside. They've shown that they can this
mental sides in this competition. What he now wants to
see is them doing it up agains around about their
(05:51):
same skill set and also more regularly. The run of
three games. Is that a win or a point is
not something that he wants to get familiar with.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, all right, So five o'clock kick off at Sky
Stadium for that one in the Capital, then across the
Tasman it's the competition leaders still aucland FC, who I
was fair to say humbled last weekend. I guess a
tough result was always going to happen at some point, Jacob,
despite their their great start to the season. What do
you make of what played out at Mount Smart last
(06:19):
weekend for them getting a four nail trouncing.
Speaker 3 (06:22):
I loove man, It's your typical raid, wasn't it. John
Alouisi came in, he had a plan. It was very
clear they were going to utilize the press, the high
energy approach to get at an aucland FC side that
I think you suspicion might get complacant at some point
and it turned out that complacency potentially was realized last weekend.
(06:44):
So they hit them very fast and they had them
very early straight from the descender, durned playbook coops. They
were targeted out in this field and basically used offensive
situations to spring attacks. What Steve Porker has been adamant
will happen is that there's going to be a response
(07:06):
and standards seemed to be the thing that he's driving
at here. Very clear in his post match comments the
players weren't out for the fight. They hadn't demonstrated that
they were going to put in the work rate and
the fundamentals of the footballing side and the fundamentals and
the foundation of getting a result simply weren't there. So
not surprised necessarily. But I will say this, this is
(07:29):
a site that has not yet existed for six months
after kicking their first ball and anger. So when they
go through learning phases like they did up against Western United,
there is a chance that they will be more dramatic
than the side that has got more maturity than them.
So we know that they can't play good football. We
know that they can do it regularly, they can do
(07:50):
it consistently, but when they do come unstuck, I think
we can expect replications saw against Western United. That said,
up against the Central Coast Mariners traveling to Gosford again,
learning about the sounds, learning about the dynamic when they
do travel. This is going to be a I think
(08:11):
a really good battle flaw or condes. See, the Mariners
are exactly the sort of team that can go step
to step with them, because in my mind at least,
it's a very lightful like confrontation that we're looking forward to.
Speaker 2 (08:25):
Yeah, we'll be great, Jacob. Great to catch up, mates,
look forward to hearing your commentary on Sky a little
bit later on from Sky Stadium. All I might see
you there and yeah, we'll catch up soon. Appreciate your
time here on New stalksb OH.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Prother mate Jason Pine is in the driving Sea for
the burn up as well, so make sure you tune
in nice and early before kickoff. Lazers and gentlemen, Well, very.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Good appointment viewing, Thanks very much, Jacob, Jacob spooning their
part of the Sky Sport commentary team, himself and Jason
Pine covering the Phoenix game. Hosting at Newcastle Jets in
Wellington from five o'clock this Evening's going to be interesting
to see what kind of crowd they get given the
Phoenix are on a three game losing streak and a
(09:04):
lot of people in Wellington hit away this time of year,
so yeah, it might be a crowds on the smaller side.
Hopefully not, but it is a nice day in the Capitol,
so hopefully somewhat of a decent crowd can get into
sky Stadium for that one. Auckland FC have the tough
outing of meeting the Central Coast Maritis that's from seven
our time tonight. Other games across the round Sydney FC
(09:28):
hosting Melbourne victory that one at nine thirty five this
evening and then tomorrow at seven pm Western United hosting
a Brisbane raw. But yeah, pretty important couple of games
for both the Phoenix and Auckland FC. More so for
the Phoenix trying to snap that losing streak back at
home against Newcastle Jets or a couple of places behind
them on the ladder. Yeah, hopefully from the Phoenix's perspective
(09:51):
they can get the win. And of course Auckland's been
back to the drawing boards, been working hard, as Jacob mentioned,
trying to rebound from that shock four nil defeat last
week at Mount Smart Stadium that Auckland had to Western United.
Interesting couple of games beginning from five o'clock this evening
as part of Round ten of the Men's A League.
