Speaker 1 (00:06):
You're listening to the All Sport Breakfast podcast with Darcy
Waldgrave from News Talk SEDB.

Speaker 2 (00:11):
Twenty fast seven on the All Sport Breakfast. But hoops
for you now at Tiger Nuggets v Wellingston Saints Edgarsenta
Dunedin tip off at four o'clock. It's an hour after
the rapid League gets underway. Sitting eighth on the table
right now the Nuggets three and three, which wined by
the head coach Mike Kelly.

Speaker 3 (00:30):
Good morning, Hey, good to be here, Thanks Darcy, Yeah.

Speaker 2 (00:33):
And thanks for joining us. Another big day in Sales NBL,
another big week. It's relentless, isn't it. This competition just
never stops.

Speaker 4 (00:41):
Yeah, yeah, it's great once you get into season, it's
just fun.

Speaker 3 (00:44):
You get to play.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Little time spent training. I know the players like that,
but from a coach's point of view, how does that
work for you?

Speaker 4 (00:52):
Oh yeah, I would love to have more training days.
But this last week's been good. You know, we had
three good days of training in preparation for the Saints
and yeah, we'll see how that works out today.

Speaker 2 (01:04):
How do you rate your seat and so far? Because
you startled off with the loss, then you retold came
back with three wins, then he had another loss. Now
you beg I began, Is that pretty much sum up
the sales NBO, do you think?

Speaker 3 (01:20):
Well?

Speaker 4 (01:21):
I do think there's been a lot of up and down. Uh,
And a lot of it has to do with uh
in the NBL, just just with personnel and people coming
in and out. And you know, started off with we
didn't have all our players in, all our coaches in.
So I think for us, after the first two losses, uh,

(01:42):
we did a great job of kind of regrouping, getting
some players in and having our having our whole group
and winning those three in a row. So I think,
you know, the guys have worked really hard. The culture
that they had here before I got here has been
really strong and uh. And so yeah, I think we're
I think we're in a position now where we're finding

(02:04):
out who we are with all our guys here and
all of our coaches here.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I think that's a fair reflection of the comp so
farther You're not the only team that's found themselves in
that position. It's the ability to actually, I suppose, roll
with the punches and work together as a team. As
you know, with the basketball players come and go season
in season out over the show. And it's how quickly
they can identify what the team is and listen to you.

(02:31):
So you must be happy with the fact you will
you mean it there now you're starting to I suppose
a semboard team that are playing from the same page.

Speaker 4 (02:39):
Yeah, you know, we had Jalen Sebry was our last
import to come in and he met us on the road,
came in on Thursday, played on Friday and played really well,
hit six threes in that first game, but he had
just flown thirty hours or whatever.

Speaker 3 (02:57):
And and our.

Speaker 4 (02:59):
Assistant coach that was his first day with us as well,
and he's sitting on the bench with a bunch of
guys who he doesn't even know their names. So, uh,
you know, to be able to get it, get a
full week of training in this week and and get
guys you know, legs and getting on the same page.
It's it's been a lot of fun, a lot of work,

(03:19):
but uh yeah, it's just going to get better and
better with time.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
What's the NBO like as far as the coaching. I
know you're any alien to the role, but you came
out of the AMBL last year. You've spent a lot
of time over the coaching various franchises. That the major
difference that you can see so far in the quality,
the energy, the physicality and so on.

Speaker 4 (03:40):
Yeah, it's probably probably the depth of talent. I think
in Australia there's maybe a little bigger pond too to
take talent from and from Australia, New Zealand and the world.
And and there's there's more money there, so I think
you get a little more talent that way.

Speaker 3 (04:01):
But but the the.

Speaker 4 (04:03):
Level here and the professionalism is second to none. And
and I think the coaching level as well is great here.
Guys play super hard, they're well drilled, and I and
I think you know, there's good there's good coaching at
every level around the world, whether it's high school basketball,
university basketball, and as I'm seeing here, really good coaching

(04:26):
in the in the NBL.

Speaker 2 (04:28):
Here, I enjoy the peeling back of the layers when
it comes to exposing the young talent because you're seeing
sells NBL teenagers pretty much still in high school. Some
of them are turning out and playing the game to
a high level. It seems a lot for what's going
on down below at a school level experiencing that at

(04:49):
like Tiger Mike.

Speaker 4 (04:50):
Yeah, especially with the rapid league games being played before
the regular games every every game, and these rapid league
games where the bench players get to play.

Speaker 3 (05:01):
Like we've had all across the league.

Speaker 4 (05:04):
I think there's great exposure for the younger players and
some some older players that are just not starting in
the in the regular games, it just gives them great,
great minutes and great exposure and a chance to play
against really good competition. And I think that just builds
confidence as well as skill. So the NBA has done

(05:25):
a really good job of that, and uh, and I
think it then translates to the regular game where these
young guys get confidence and feel like they can, you know,
play at that higher.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
Level basketball on a high school levels. All well and good,
you start playing against mean things get very different. So
that rapidly does give them that exposure, so they realize
what takes you gang on out there?

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Right. Yeah, No, it gives them great exposure.

Speaker 4 (05:47):
And I think, you know, sometimes you're going to sink
a little bit in those games where you're playing against
really high level talent. But you know, we've seen some
some of these amazing young players really be able to
swim in that situation and and you know, put themselves
in a really good situation to play, play good minutes

(06:08):
and keep improving.

Speaker 2 (06:10):
Well, I'm looking forward to seeing you guys in action
and catch plenty of sales NBL. This so much on
it's hard to miss it. Looking forward Mike Kelly, seeing
what you can put out with the Wellington Saints coming
up this afternoon tip off at four o'clock. Hey, thanks
very much for your time.

Speaker 3 (06:24):
Go well, that's right.

Speaker 4 (06:25):
Can't wait to see everybody at the Edgar Center today.
Thanks for having me, Darcy.

Speaker 2 (06:30):
Mike, thanks for having Oh I'm one of you. Thanks
for having me you didn't have I had. Thanks for
coming on the program. And no, I'm sorry I can't
get to the Edgar Center as much as i'd like
to did. The Uber bill is phenomenal and i'd have
to leave now. Not game. Great camp sells NBL if

(06:50):
you get a chance. It's everywhere, It's on almost every day.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
How will we look?

Speaker 2 (06:54):
Future of New Zealand Basketball.
