Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport
Cult of Past seven here on Gold Sport in the
Country Sport Breakfast Saturday night, we're going to have a
live commentary here on Gold Sport of the Super Rugby
Pacific Final between the Blues and the Chiefs. Andrew Hall
joins us a Blue CEO.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
Morning Andrew, Good morning, how are you today? Oh?

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Great mate, you'll be fizzing looking forward to that big
final on Saturday night for a start.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
Offf Oh it's brilliant, Yeah it is. And they have
our closest neighbor there. We'll make a hell of an atmosphere.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
Last time the Blues won the title is back in
two thousand and three, so it's a long time between drinks.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
So there's a long time and we haven't won anything yet.
So we've been to a couple of finals and semi
finals that are between our leagues, didn't we So we're
not getting overly excited at the moment. I think the
beauty of Werner's he's very much focused on what we
need to do, not really the outcome us, which has

(01:00):
been great.

Speaker 1 (01:01):
It's great having Vern Cotter on board, first time coaching
the Blues this season. I mean he's made a difference,
hasn't he. Yeah?

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Yeah, I look, you can't take away from what Leon achieved.
He sort of took us from you know, really scrambling
around the sort of the bottom third of the table
there to really competitive every year. But it's almost been
a really nice transition and each coach has bought something
and that's been really positive. So we've got to grab

(01:30):
that and then develop the next guy to hopefully, you know,
continue to grow the success.

Speaker 1 (01:36):
Virtually a forty four thousand tickets sold. But you go
back to last weekend, the Battle of the Bees, the
Blues and the Brumbies was a disappointing crowd. Were you
disappointed in that crowd?

Speaker 2 (01:48):
Yeah, particularly after the twenty six at the Hurricanes and
another twenty three with the moment plan on Saturday. I
think though there was a bit of a perfect storm.
Literally last week there was that bomb, there was the
Aussie Still we've got a wee bit of work to
do with news on public that they are getting stronger.
And it was a Friday night in Auklam, which doesn't help.

(02:10):
So it was still disappointing, But there were some contributing
factors that because we were really happy with the week
before against the drawer. Quarterfinals generally don't do overly well,
but we'd had a great turnout and a really great
atmosphere at that and yeah, it was disappointing, it was.
But look, we've got a new rugby commission now and

(02:33):
even in fact, we've started to have Saturday afternoons for
the again, and it just feels like somebody's listening to
the clubs now and we're really excited about really working
hard to get this commission up and running and listen
to the fans. And you know, we had the rule
changes this year, which I think has made the product

(02:53):
more appealing, like the broadcast, because a quite phenomenal seven
hundred odds over seven hasn't watched that Crusader's Blues game,
for example, So there's some there's some green shoots there,
but there's still work to do.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
Yeah, would you like to have seen this final played
in the afternoon rather than Saturday night?

Speaker 2 (03:12):
Yeah, probably late afternoon we've got club footy, yeah, and
that's important to us. But yeah, I think so that
that said, the final January is one that is broadcast
remember globally, But yeah, it would have been nice to
be able to consider it and at least look at it.
And I think that's what the Commission has given us
the opportunity to do. I think Kingdom have always been

(03:33):
pretty honest. Hasn't then said that we'll look at all
options and we'll investigate them, and we just feel we've
got to get the balance between high performance and send
them you have a look at that. So you're pretty
pretty excited.

Speaker 1 (03:47):
It's almost like a local derby, really, isn't it, Because
I mean the Wacado is just over the Bombay Hill,
so it's it's kind of the Battle of the bomb Bays.
They're going to come over the hill and their thousands
on Saturday, aren't they the Wacao mob?

Speaker 2 (03:59):
Yeah they are, they are, and that's great, Like yeah,
bloody a little motorway she's she makes like it's like
a you know, division of walking down there now. So
it's that hates me saying that, but no, they will
and we'll get a really good relationship with with the chiefs.
We be battle hard on the field, but there's a

(04:20):
so we're welcome them. And and it's after working in
Britain for sort of sixteen years you had those close
local derbies and this would be the closest I've experienced
being back in New.

Speaker 1 (04:29):
Zealand and the and the cow bells they'll be ringing
out loudly, I would imagine.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
Yeah, yeah with those, don't they.

Speaker 1 (04:39):
What's the feeling like in the in the in the
Blues camp at the moment over the last couple of
days heading into the final Saturday, Yeah, this.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
Year and previously has been a real tension, but there's
a quite an excitement of sort of felt and it's
been People are very upbeat and it's been very very positive,
not not in the way that anyone thinks they won it,
but just in a way that we've been here before,
so people fell into some patents that we knew what

(05:08):
worked and what didn't. So it's it's been really good.
And I think what Vernon has done really well as
he's keep people's feet on the ground and focused on
what they need to do. So yeah, it's been it's
been a good week this far. Yeah, and not too
much height, which has been.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
Good and fantastic to have a sellout crowd. It's just
going to be a great game. So Andrew, you wish
you and the Blues all the very very.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Best, No, and I thank you guys. Look, there's only
one place and probably in the country that can can
put on an event like that, and this is our advantage.
So we really want to make the most of Saturday nights.
So if people can get down, it'll be a great
show and a great game.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
Fantastic Andrew, good luck, thanks for joining us.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
Mate, cheers. Thanks very much, guys, CEO.

Speaker 1 (05:53):
