Speaker 1 (00:00):
Whether it's gun boots or rugby boots.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
The Country Sport Breakfast has you covered on Gold Sport,
your home of live commentary. We're talking cricket now here
on the show and it's a kind of bad news
story more so than a good news story. I mean,
the good news is from England's point of view they
won the first Test at Hagley Oval during the weekend.
But the bad news from that side of thing is
that the Talk Sport team who are out here, John
(00:23):
Norman as the cricket editor, had a lot of equipment
stole and when John you joined us this morning, when
you arrived at Hagley Oval on that what was going
to be the final a the third day, you found
the commentary box had been broken into. What happened?
Speaker 1 (00:38):
Yeah, good bring to you b K. Yeah it was well,
all the places in the world to suffer a break in,
I must say New Zealand wasn't exactly top of the list.
We've been to some farth long places the Talk Sports
team over the last twenty years i've been at the station,
but yeah, we turned up well. Actually, what occurred was
I got a call from Steve Harmison who arrived company
(01:00):
man that he is before me and said that basically
that overnight a couple of guys who've been caught on
CCTV had broken in from outside the venue, basically separated
the fence, came in, loaded up and you know, they
took alcohol, they took food, they took equipment, they took screens,
(01:23):
they got to laptops and unfortunately for us, you know,
when we walked into our commentary box, instead of thirty
thousand dollars worth of broadcasting equipment, camera equipment, they'd both gone.
So it was, yeah, a bit of a painful start
today three truth to be told. But you know, everybody
raded around the Yeah, the venue had been hit as well,
(01:45):
so we weren't the only ones suffering, but New Zealand
Cricket and the venue security as well as other broadcasters
as well, all came to our aid. We got up
and running, we broadcast and then the good news was
the evening of the third day into the fourth morning,
one of our cameras actually was located. It was found
(02:06):
hidden away in the venue. So obviously it'd probably been
a little bit too heavy to carry and they either
left it to think, did they come back and get
it or they just put it to one side. So yeah,
it was just one of those things. Really, we move
on and nobally got hurt. There were things that see
and all that, and of course it doesn't take anything
(02:27):
away from what it's been and always is an absolutely
fantastic country, is it.
Speaker 2 (02:32):
And of course I guess for that extra day off
that you had yesterday, I suppose that was spent trying
to organize replacement equipment. Would that be right?
Speaker 1 (02:42):
Well, yeah, you are right, because we didn't need to
replace and hire, and also the team are moving to
Wellington tomorrow. You know, it's quite specialized kit, so it's
not as though you can just walk up to your
local electronics store and just buy a replacement. So yeah, Unfortunately, Katie,
(03:03):
our video producer, you know, was reading around for a
couple of days too, places in Wellington and a church
trying to locate substitutes and thankfully because a camera was returned.
You know, it's not it was actually an easier task
for her, or more of a straightforward task. She clip
me around the back of the head if she describing
(03:25):
it as easy.
Speaker 2 (03:26):
So you you're heading to Wellington now off the back
of of a great game. Really for England's point of view.
I mean drop Catches for New Zealand was not good,
so England and looking pretty impressive so far.
Speaker 1 (03:39):
I don't think there's that much between these two sides,
I really go. I think, as you say, it was
the drop catches, you can't stop pay catches and went
down and says quickly Harry Brook is too good a
batter to give one life too, let alone. Before you
know he's he scored two fifties in at Mount Montanery,
a big hundred at Wellington that was last year and
now he's got one hundred and sent you on. You
(04:01):
know it's he's the last batt is what four chances
to and if you do in four chances as well
as a reprieve for Ben Stokes, Ben Duckett and even
Bread and Cass, if that's what you do, you're going
to lose and actually get exactly what's happened. So you know,
it was pretty painful for New Zealand and there's no
doubt about it. You know it. It was at anticipation,
(04:24):
but expect after what happened in India, and it does
kind of fell a bit flat. It was difficult and
I don't think that anybody within the England camp is
going to get too carried away because if not for
those drops and that it would have been a completely
different game. And it was actually a game that, if
(04:46):
not for New Zealand would have been ahead of. Remember,
England was seventy one for four in first innings after
New Zealand hit three hundred and forty eight. Harry Brook
is caught on eighteen. They're ninety or for five. They're
not scoring four hundred and ninety nine. So yeah, I'm
sure that there's always a question about these kind of things,
But essentially, I'm sure when we come to Wellington, you know,
(05:10):
it'll be England's turn to drop a couple and New
Zealand we'll cling onto a couple of world. That's the
way the cricket works, and if it does, and I can,
then I fully expect a really competitive second or third Test.
Speaker 2 (05:22):
Much we look forward to it and hopefully the police
gets some kind of leads one who took the equipment
and you get it all back.
Speaker 1 (05:30):
Well yeah, I mean there's the police have been banging
on it, and you know it's not like England where
when these things occur, you know, they disappear off and
sometimes they have stolen to order. Difficult to locate, but
you know, it's a much smaller country and it's quite
specialized equipment. I mean, I'm sure the alcohol has been drunk,
but I'm not sure what they're going to do with this,
(05:51):
with this equipment. But yeah, loads god and if it
comes back, we got one in the back. We've got
the main one back. That would be a bonus. But yeah,
as I say, we move.
Speaker 2 (05:59):
On, Yeah, absolutely well, Steve Harmison will be gutted that
the alcohol was taken, but we look forward to We
look forward to chatting with you again tomorrow. With all
things out of the UK, you've no doubt keeping up
to date with all the footy over there, so we'll
talk again tomorrow.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
Yeah, look forward to it. BKA, take it easy, as.
Speaker 2 (06:19):
John Norman joining us sab out of christ Church now
on his way to Wellington to get set to bring
the English listeners be able to view it, although probably
get some cameras. But if you are in the christ
Chitch region and somebody offers you a cheap camera, be
very very careful about that one. All right. On gold
