Speaker 1 (00:00):
The country Sport Breakfast.

Speaker 2 (00:01):
Has you covered on gold Sport, your home of live commentary.
Alrighty are UK correspondent John Norman has arrived in Barcelona
peraths to cover the America's Cup. I'm sad to say
it's all over. John in England's been knocked out.

Speaker 1 (00:21):
Yeah. Well I rocked up here just as half of
the New Zealand continuent. We're heading back to back to
the Motherland. I bumped into a quite disgruntled woman at
the coffee shop at Barcelona Airport who was awaiting a
thirty nine hour flight back to New Zealand. So she
was ordering a double espresso and I was thinking, that's

(00:43):
like the opposite of what you want if you're just
about to get on and flight. It's going to last
the best part of thirty nine hours. But yes, it's
welcome from Barcelona scene of Well what a weekend you
guys have had.

Speaker 3 (00:54):
By the way, America's Cup.

Speaker 1 (00:57):
Auckland FC off to a winning start in they're in
the Aileygue, the women with winning the T twenty World
Cup and of course a seismic victory in the first
Test match in Bengalaru. So even with that, Kane Williamson
and Trent Bolt. You can still beat the Mighty India
in India. Absolute scenes, brilliant stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Was there much interest I know, the America's cups now
done and dusted, and was there much interest in the
UK over it?

Speaker 1 (01:28):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (01:28):
There is.

Speaker 1 (01:29):
In the kind of more highbrow kind of newspapers, you've
got coverage. Ben Ainsley is still a massive name here,
so the fact that he was associated with the Great
Britain team, some of his quotes off the back of
it as well, saying it's the best best skippered team
in history of sailing essentially, I mean coming from him,

(01:50):
that's that's quite a statement. And then of course the
fact there's the Ineos link in Inios seem to be
linked with pretty much everyone, including the black Caps, All
Black Thing, Tour de France F one and.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Of course Manchester United as well.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
So yeah, there was definitely coverage in the Times newspapers
like that. But I think the fact that it was
quite one sided New Zealand. What there were three in
it up? No, there were more than actually yeah, and
then then Great Britain hit won a couple and then
you rounded it off. So I mean it's still a
competition and a sport that you know, most people in

(02:27):
the UK haven't the foggiest idea how you'd even go
about winning it or even competing in it.

Speaker 3 (02:33):
But yeah, no, it definitely got a presence and having
someone like.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
Sir Ben Asley involved just added added to the you know,
the right the popularity.

Speaker 2 (02:43):
Suppose there would have been a lot of disappointment in
the UK of the T twenty Women's World Cup with
England being knocked out. There was disappointment here with Australia
being knocked out as well, and great joy with New
Zealand winning it. But yeah, what was the reaction over
there with England being knocked out?

Speaker 3 (02:58):
Missed opportunity? Really?

Speaker 1 (03:00):
I mean, you know, England had set their stall out
as being the team to beat Australia and the fact
that Australia didn't make it to the final just meant
that England probably were kicking themselves more than once or
twice on.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
The way back to England.

Speaker 1 (03:15):
You know, it's not that they stunk the competition out,
they just lost a game and that was enough.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
The variances of that group just meant.

Speaker 1 (03:24):
That one defeat and the heavy one was enough to
see them out you know they've beatn South Africa, but
South Africa progressed.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Then of course South Africa beat Australia, meaning that Australia
is going to be in the final. You know England
would be kicking themselves there. And then of course you
know New Zealand won it, which is absolutely phenomenal for
New Zealand. But you know, if you're an England fan,
you're thinking, well, we've just had New Zealand in England
and we won every single game. You know, New Zealand

(03:52):
went into that tournament losing ten on a spin of
t twenties, and yet there they are, you know, holding
the trophy aloft. And there's also marks over the team
as well. You have to be you have to have
question marks over you. What is it that? What has
happened here? It's one thing to be beaten by arguably
the greatest cricket side ment or male or female, that

(04:12):
has ever been poor cricket pitch. The Australians have been
so dominant over the last ten years or so, no
disgrace to lose to them. But this isn't that Australian side,
and we didn't have to play Australia. They still got
knocked out, so it's a little bit of angst in
and around the disappointment.

Speaker 2 (04:29):
I bet there is. And I know you're on holiday,
but you would have had an eye on the Premier
League round up.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
Oh yeah, of course I was. I actually jetted out
here on Sundays. It's only two hours is it kind
of like flying from Auckland to I don't know christ
I suppose barth Loada and London's not that far away.
As one of the beauties are living in Europe, you can,
you know, do these kind of city breaks.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
So yeah, no, I was.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
I was in London for the weekend. My team is
Fulham went down three to one to ask the Villa,
which is a shame. But yeah, the big story is
coming out of the Premier League.

Speaker 3 (05:02):
Arsenal.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
You know their disciplinary record, which you know back in
the day on the Rasenvenger was always a little bit
of an achilles Hill proved to be this weekend as
they lost away at Bournemouth. You know, they've done really
well on the road. They've drawn with Manchester City, they've
beaten Tottenham. But yeah, they lost two nil after having
Saliba sent off in the first half. Manchester City were

(05:25):
thankful for the non appearance to bar They won in
the ninety fifth minute against Wolves. Wolves have really been
poor this season, so that was a bit of a
surprise they were pushed that far. Liverpool beat Chelsea two
to one and an entertaining encounter. You know, they're just
quietly going about their business really, as Spurs were good
again for one win over west Ham.

Speaker 3 (05:46):
There was a bit of fracar there.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
But much of the conversation has not been so much
about the top of the table. It's been about the bottom.
Hipswich lost again, they've yet to win a game. Southampton
two nil up and lost three too, and essentially teams
that have come up last year, you know, just haven't
really registered with those two anyway. Southampton and Ipswich less.
We're doing okay, but so a lot of the conversation

(06:09):
is about that. Coming out of another pretty interesting weekend
of Premier League action.

Speaker 2 (06:14):
Johnny, we'll let you go and enjoy the sunshine perhaps
all the evening now over there in Barcelona, and we'll
talk next week.

Speaker 1 (06:20):
Yeah, look forward to I'll be back in blythe and
we'll look back to see how well New Zealand did
against India in what I imagine will be a slightly more
spin friendly Test match than what the Indians managed to
carve up in seam friendly conditions for the first Test match.

Speaker 3 (06:37):
But we'll see.

Speaker 2 (06:38):
You're right. Enjoy your break. John Norman joining US out
of Barcelona.
