A Timaru butchery that is believed to be one of oldest in the country has reopened under new ownership and a new name.

The site, on the corner of Rathmore and Church streets, is likely to have been home to a butcher shop since the late 1800s.

On Tuesday it reopened as Cloudy Peaks Butchery, marking the return of an independent butcher at the site after the closure of Burgers Butchery in February.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the rugby field to the rotary shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport seventeen
past seven. Here on the Country Sport Breakfast. It's nice
to read feel good stories, and this one is a
really cool feel good story about one of the country's
oldest butcheries has reopened in Timuru. Previously was known as

(00:21):
I think Berger's Butchery, but it's reopened as Cloudy Peaks
Butchery with new owners Marie Murdoch and her husband Kine.
Opening the butchery, she joins us this morning morning, Marie, Hi, Hello,
we very very well. Thank you you at the butcher shop.
Now getting the sausage ready for the day?

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Oh no, not quite years No, I've got to get
my children ready first and then i will shoot down.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
Tell us a little bit about before we look at
what you're doing with the butchery, a little bit of
the history one of the country's oldest butcheries.

Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, so I'm not too yeah, I don't really know
that ins ann out of it. When we brought the
building back in December last year, they sold it to
us and with the story of it being one of
the oldest butcheries, the worker working butcher shop in New Zealand.
So yeah, so that's pretty cool.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
What made you, guys, you know, in this day and
age and time, you know, open a butchery? Why?

Speaker 2 (01:17):
I'm not too sure. It was kind of like we
were kind of like, well, my husband, late father, Larry,
he wants, you know, wanted to open up a butcher
shop back in the nineties. I think it was down
here in Feeley. And then we would saw one pop
up on you know, and they out trade me actually,

(01:39):
and it was for sale and tomorrow, and we thought
the opportunity to be able to buy one, and we thought, oh,
go on then, and then the guy that was in there,
he obviously didn't go so well. And yeah, and then
we thought, hang on a minute, why don't we give
it a go? And yeah, so here we are.

Speaker 1 (01:55):
How long have you been open? As Cloudy as Cloudy Butchery?

Speaker 2 (02:00):
So just we're on our second week this week?

Speaker 1 (02:03):
Yeah, how's it gone?

Speaker 2 (02:05):
Oh? Outstanding? Honestly, it's just been crazy. We actually can't
keep up too fair. We've sold out of everything nearly.

Speaker 1 (02:13):
So what are you specializing in anything? Or is it
just good local cuts of meat?

Speaker 2 (02:19):
Yeah? Just pretty much there, just local custom meat that
people just people want to know a story and so
we've got a little bit of a story to you know,
tell them where our stock has come from and their
meat is going. So yeah, so that's just kind of
what we want to to bring to the community. And yeah,
and keep it local too, which is actually really cool.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
So it's meat really grown locally in the area in
the McKenzie country.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
Yes, definitely.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Yeah, yeah, having the I mean and tomorrow they just
had the news recently, I think last Friday of the
meat plant, you know, closing down, losing a lot of people.
Will that have an effect at all?

Speaker 2 (02:54):
Oh yes, I think so. Yeah, definitely because we're the
because we're the only butchers shop in town now, so
we've got those surrounding bitcher shops and the other we
communities around South Canterbury, but the only one in town
and the eldest love to come in and have a chance,
and they don't really Yeah, traveling is just a wee
bit too much for them. So it's really you know,
like community wise, I think it's really cool that they've

(03:17):
they're not cooled that it's shut down, but it's you know,
the community supported us. Yeah, but yeah, the community is
definitely feeling the feeling it from what happened with Alliance, definitely.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
And I see we're one of your most popular ranges
is tongue of all things.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, aufful and tongue and all that kind of stuff.
But it's just out in the park. We cunt of like, yeah,
if we could buy it in by the truckloads, I
think we could sell it by the truckloads. Which, yeah,
it surprises me, to be fair.

Speaker 1 (03:45):
Well, I've got to say I'm a little bit surprised
as well. Really. I mean, you can understand mints and
steaks and sausages any special sausage recipes, you do.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Not just yet. So it's small learning. So we're just
trying to Yeah, but that'll come, don't We were over there, Yeah,
have something up the pipeline.

Speaker 1 (04:04):
So you're open Monday to Friday this stage, and I
believe you've got plans for late nights.

Speaker 2 (04:09):
Yeah, just a late night on a Thursday, just because
we're not open on the weekend. So if you're going
to get out on the weekend and stuff like that,
you've got enough time to come in on a Tuesday
night and yeah, grab all your goodies.

Speaker 1 (04:19):
Well, I applaud you and your team. Marie the Cloudy
Peaks Butchery in Timaru, Rathmore and Church Street corner.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Well done, Oh thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
Absolute pleasure. So there we go. When you hear stories
of businesses closing and a nice positive story like that one,
I'm looking at the smiling faces of Marie along with
Adam Lammittt and Dallas Willets. A story out of there,
out of the press, A lovely story.
