Speaker 1 (00:00):
The Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:13):
So Wine Chat. This morning, we're going to head to
the Marlboro region and we'll join Michael Cooper with a
little bit of an explanation about Appalachian Marlborough wine.
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Michael, good morning, Good morning, Brian.
Speaker 2 (00:32):
Is it tell me a little bit more about I mean,
the Marlboro region is famous for wines, first off, isn't it?
Speaker 3 (00:37):
It certainly is. In fact, it sort of produces round
about seventy or seventy five percent of all New Zealand
wine and round about ninety percent of our exports, so
it really dominates. But I think it's a really great idea.
A few years ago some of the members of the
Marlboro industry came together to protect the reputation Marvel wine
(01:01):
to ensure that high standards were maintained. And so what
they've done, the key things they've done and they put
their logo on the bottle, typically on the back label,
so listeners can look for the words Appellation Mulverra Wine
if that logo is there. What it means is that
it guarantees that the wine was made exclusively one hundred
(01:24):
percent from Maulborough grapes, which by law a wine only
has to be eighty five percent from Mulvra, whereas in
this case, if it's got the appellation Maulbrao Wine logo,
it's one hundred percent Maulvra. It also guarantees that the
wine was bottled within New Zealand, which is not a
big deal for US New Zealanders, but when the wines
(01:45):
get exported it becomes very significant. And it also guarantees
that the wine has passed what I believe is an
independent blind tasting to make sure that it reaches a
certain sort of standard that's expected of good mulbl wines.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
It's reassuring for wine lovers, and I believe you've been
tasting a few Marlborough Salmon blancs.
Speaker 3 (02:06):
Oh it's a tough job. I know, I know, as
you know, someone has to do it.
Speaker 2 (02:10):
But no.
Speaker 3 (02:10):
They sent me a dozen of the sun blocs made
by members of Appalachian Mulbra Wine, and so I just
singled out four that I thought had particular interest. The
first one is Unsealed Nature's Path malbrasagn twenty twenty four. Now,
this one's got interest partly because it's certified organic, but
(02:34):
also it's downright delicious. It's a state grown on the
south side of the Wirau Valley. It's full bodied, it's
got lovely ripe, sort of sweet fruit flavors. It's not sweet,
but it's got those lovely right passion fruit lime flavors
that you tend to get in the Wirau Valley. It's
got excellent sort of delicacy, freshness and depth. So if
(02:56):
you're looking for a really top flight organic mal savignon,
I recommend Artsfield Nature's Part twenty twenty four. That's twenty
nine dollars. Now here's a bargain, Pretty Paddic Marlbra Savignon
Blanc twenty twenty fourth. This one's eighteen dollars and it's
to be a four star wine out of five stars.
(03:18):
So it's excellent and it's eighteen dollars retail. Pretty Paddock.
It's fresh and vigorous, slower Wiral Valley. It's got nice
ripe tropical fruit flavors. It's crisp and dry. Now here's
another one that's consistently worth buying. Starborough Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc
twenty twenty four. Now this one's twenty two dollars, but
(03:40):
it's a consistently really impressive wine. Starborough. It's grown in
the Aritary Valley, so that's over the hills to the
south from Blenham. It's bursting with varietal character, mouth filling,
got penetrating tropical fruit and herbal flavors. It's crisp, it's lingering,
so it's basically got everything you'd look for in a
(04:02):
glass of mulvasauvignon blanc. That's Starbuck Starbrook twenty twenty four
at twenty two dollars. And finally, Row Hair that's spelt
rohe Row Hair. Blind River maulvver Sauvignon blanc twenty twenty
four and this one sells for twenty four dollars, and
(04:24):
it's made by a winery called Ripara Springs, and this
offers really good value. Blind River is sort of on
the south side of the Arbitrary Valley, and they describe
it as being Maulvra's quote driest, coolest, most wind swept
area unquote. It's got lovely, vibrant tropical fruit flavors. It's
(04:44):
got a slightly salty saline streak, and it's got just
fractional sweetness which you really can't taste, and that's balanced
by mouthwatering acidity. So that really is a very good value.

Speaker 2 (05:02):
So the thing for any wine lovers wine buyers out there,
look for the Appalachian Marlborough Wine label on the on
the back of the bottle. Right.
Speaker 3 (05:10):
Well, yes, I agree, because when you look at the
list of members, they tend to be amongst the region's
top growers, and I think they're determined to ensure that
consumers when they buy a bottle of Mulbra wine, you
know they're not getting fifteen percent from somewhere else. They're
getting one hundred percent Marlborough.
Speaker 2 (05:27):
Love it, Hey, Michael, always great to chat. Let's do
it again next week.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Great bright man, even God with my little bottle. All right,
Ever of that
