The Dark Destroyer is back in New Zealand and he’s “honoured to meet” the All Blacks.

Shaun Wallace, who’s the star of the British TV quiz show The Chase, is in Aotearoa for a series of quiz events with Sky-owned company Believe it Or Not that are raising money for local charities.

But before all that, Wallace managed to catch sight of how All Blacks scored a 16-15 victory against England at Forsyth Barr Stadium in Dunedin.

Speaker 1 (00:00):
From the rugby field to the rotary shed. It's the
Country Sport Breakfast with Brian Kelly on Gold Sport.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
He's on his fourth visit to New Zealand and I
bet you it will not be his last because he
loves this country, he loves the All Blacks. He rates
Sam Whitelock as one of his best friends. And it's
the dark Destroyer here I'm talking about. Sean Wallace joins
me on the show. Sean, good morning.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Good morning, Brian. How are you look?

Speaker 2 (00:33):
More importantly, how are you mate?

Speaker 1 (00:36):
Tired but really happy to be here. So you know,
I'm going to sort of world wind tour of the
Long White Cloud and I'm really enjoying myself.

Speaker 2 (00:44):
You're out here with the Believer It or Not pub
Quiz nights and it's a chance for you number one
to meet Kiwi's and also to see a lot of
the country. I believe you've just been to Queenstown.

Speaker 1 (00:54):
That's correct, I've been to the Queenstown. I'm currently in
New Plymouth, about to head back to Auckland. Then I'm
going to Hamilton and Kerry Kerry then back to Hamilton.
So it's you know, a brilliant tour and much money
for worthwhile charities and then amongst.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
All of that, you know you get to go to
All Black Test matches because you love the All Blacks.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
Mate, That's correct. I've been an All Back fan ever
since I was a kid. So you know, it was
an honor for me to meet Scott Raider Robertson for
the first time in his very first Test match, to
meet Sam Kaine, Will Jordan and the rest of the boys.
So you know, I'm glad that they won their first game.
It wasn't a classic, but it was exciting.

Speaker 2 (01:35):
Coming from an Englishman, That's not a very good thing
to be saying, is it really. I mean I would
have thought you'd been rooting for England.

Speaker 1 (01:40):
Well, I love England, I love my country. But as
a little kid, I've always been obsessed with the All
Blacks rugby because of the say, although they don't hold
a record for the most World Cup winsd they are
the standard ports lub We should be played And.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
What's going to happen on Saturday at Eden Park, the
Garden of Eden, England in the second Test against the Abs.

Speaker 1 (02:00):
You would expect the All Blacks to complete it to
your whitewashed victory. It's going to be you know, England
are up for it. They played really really well. To
be fair, if Marcus Smith had your shooting boots on,
then England would have been Victoris for the first time
since two thousand and three.

Speaker 2 (02:15):
I've got to say Sean that you're my favorite Chaser.
But how did it come about you ending up on
the Chase?

Speaker 1 (02:21):
Well, in two thousand and eight, I was asked to
go for an interview. I went along for the audition.
They asked me thirty questions of thirty and in the
December two thousand eight, I did the first audition in
front of an I TV commissioning panel and I was
the world first to well, I am the world's first Chaser.
So I have three different separate auditions. They said I
needed a partner, so most of myself and the Beast

(02:44):
went up to the old Grenarda Studios in Manchister and
fifteen years later, here I am.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
And you still love it?

Speaker 1 (02:50):
Yeah, I still love it. We're in the summer recess
at the moment. We go back in the autumn for
some more filming, so I'm really looking forward to it.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Going back to your early childhood. I mean, you grew
up in a pretty poor sort of household, really had it.
I believe a teacher told you that you said you
wanted to be a lawyer, and he said the only
way you'd get to court was by being locked up.
Is it true?

Speaker 1 (03:13):
That is true? But I mean he was right about that.
But I haven't seen my clients. I can be released,
so so yeah. But I was always determined to actually,
you know, follow my own dreams and really love my
own ambitions. And the way I could assure that was
to make sure I'm an educated mind.

Speaker 2 (03:31):
And out here in New Zealand. I mean you just
you love the people in the countryside.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Yeah, I love it. I love it. I do from
the provinces to the city. So it's really really fantastic actually,
and that you know, I'm really grateful to be here
because for my dear friend Brendan Lockheed from believe it
or not, I wouldn't have had the opportunity to see
New Zealand, so you know, I would, believe or not.
They've helped me to reach out to everybody in New

(03:58):
Zealand and it's been fantastic.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
So of all the subjects that you get to cover
and get questions ask to you on the chase what's
your weakness? Would you have a say as a weakness?

Speaker 1 (04:09):
Yeah, every achilles have a heel, so while weaknesses soaps soaps.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
There we go. Well, I've just got a little pack
of questions here in my studio, so I'll just randomly
pick out a question. This is actually it ends up
being a music one as of two thy fifteen. What's
the only song to have ever been a UK Christmas
number one? Twice with the exact same version on each occasion.

Speaker 1 (04:36):
I would have said Bohemia rapsoy.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
Sean, you are right nineteen seventy five and nineteen ninety one.
Well done, mate, thank you great to have you here, Sean,
and love you on the chase and enjoy the rugby
on the weekend.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
Mate, I say him, well, thanks a lot, Brian. There
we are.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
The dark Destroyer Sean Wallace loves his be has been
presented with all black jerseys. Very good knowledge of music
as well. I've got to say, should have found the
soap question
