The Country Sport Breakfast Netball Short Session with a von
Willaring go Gold Gold Sport.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Talking Netball, Now the Tony Jamison Netball series between New
Zealand and England. It is all over.
Speaker 3 (00:15):
Those New Zealand's gain some credibility back. They've won the
third and final Test against England sixty one fifty six.
Speaker 2 (00:26):
Malcolm Jordan's call or the one willering on that one.
The Ferns lost the third quarter though eighteen fifteen, but
otherwise they maintained a Philly firm grip on the fixture
and in for cargol. Doesn't get any easier though. The
next series is the Constellation Cup against Australia, starting in
Wellington October twentieth. Joining us on the show This Morning
form of Silver Firm player and coach and now Gold
(00:47):
Sport commentator Yvonne Willaring.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
Morning, yvon Yes, good morning boy. Do New Zealand needs
that game?
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Have you recovered from it?
Speaker 1 (00:55):
Ah? Yeah, it was a situation. I mean England, you know,
they was a total reversal New Zealand. Listen to this.
They stayed with the same lineup throughout right. That was
probably their main lineup. They have tweaked a little bit
with the mid court players, and I still don't know
who they will take through to the Constellation Cup, although
(01:16):
having said that, as soon as it's injured at the moment,
so I don't know how bad that is. But England
made so many changes in that game. They started with
two players that we actually hadn't seen before. Rati was
a wing defense and Quashi was a goalkeeper. So I
guess in a way, and I don't want to put
a dampner on it, but you've got to keep this
game in perspective. But you know, good on New Zealand
(01:36):
that you know that I thought that they really they
played together as a team. What I really loved is
that when safe Jackson got an intercept as a goalkeeper
and the shooter converted finally we didn't. We still made
quite a number of errors, but when we converted it,
it was like a team effort. Was Jackson then acknowledged
that fact, So you know, I think we certainly was
(01:59):
a far more tea together performance from the Silver Ferns.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
As you mentioned, Dame Nolin didn't make any changes to
her starting seven throughout that game. Do you think if
she'd have done that in that second test it could
have been a different story.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
Who knows. I mean, really, you've got to give it
to England. They when they've got their what I call
their main lineup on and that's you know with obviously
with Williams at the back and fart as you at
gold offense or that's a really strong combination. And we
saw that in the third quarter. And yes, England won
that quarter eighteen fifteen. So yeah. And also I found
(02:37):
it interesting Sheen, who I've been really promoting the goal shooter,
she went off in that last quarter and we saw
a change up there as well. So that's what I'm saying, Oh,
need to keep out in perspective. But I think it
was really important for the Ferns just to focus on
their own game. And Grace Nowiki was the dominant shooter
forty eight out of fifty two, although I can ask
(02:59):
your back her up pretty good with thirteen out of fourteen.
But it's interesting the attempts when I saw it, the
attempts from the Ferns were sixty six. Appreciate when they
missed Grace and WICKI will always get the rebound, very
unlikely that she doesn't. But England had had sixty five attempts,
so they only had one less attempt at that, But
again a situation where I actually thought the Ferns were
(03:22):
going to win the game. I don't know why. Before
they even started, I thought they were going to win
that game, and I think it's just the way they
were talking. And yeah, their backs were to the wall.
They had to win that game to bring back some credibility.
So now we're holding our breath to see whether that
performance is going to be good enough against the Australians.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Looking at the Tiny Jamison series, who do you think
was the standout player? Who was your player in the
Silver Ferns of the series.
Speaker 1 (03:51):
Yeah, that's a tricky one. I've been thinking about it,
you know, and that's the problem. You're really hard to
come up with. You know, Who's who's the player of
the series, the player that made a huge difference and
that was shown up in the second tist as Maddie Gordon.
I think as as a center. I think she drives
through the court berger. I thought last night had a
(04:13):
really good game, you know, but she was found wanting
earlier on So yeah, I mean, and then you can say, well,
Grace Neweki came to the party. She certainly, you know,
was really really dominant out there. But that's the problem.
I don't think yet you had what I call a
main player with the Ferns. They either played really well
as a team or they all played, you know, poorly
(04:35):
as a team. And and that's one of the problems.
You know, when you're not winning, when you know they
could scores against you, you need someone to step up
and say listen, you know, whether you get a fancy
into step and you know, and then you converted. I
think that's what they did last night, you know when
they went for the ball. You know it was converted
on a number of occasions. Mason, Sorry, but Mason Charley
(04:59):
had limited time in the first Test, came right a
bit more in the second and played the whole game.
She just needs I guess, timing to the ball. She
was found wanting at times because she went out for
intercepts that weren't there and that created opportunities for the
shooter for England. But you know, she will improve as
(05:19):
time goes on. But the speed of Australia, that's a
concern to me going into the Constellation Cup.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Do you think Dame Nolan's going to make many changes
I mean will any play if any players played the
way maybe out of the team that they'll be dropped.
Speaker 1 (05:35):
The aim really was, don't forget they had thurny players
against Australia and the aim was to drop one of
the mid court players. That's why throughout the series, that's
one of the reasons why that mid court was constantly changed.
And if you have a look at it each test match,
there was one change in the in the mid court.
But at the moment soon as it's injured, so I'm
(05:56):
not quite sure how bad that injury is and where
there's she will bring someone else in, you know, to
cover that, who knows. But on the whole, no, this
is the team that will go forward into the Constellation Cup.
That is what was the aim that well, not that
it was preparation against England, but certainly it was a
progression and that makes sense. I mean, you should be
(06:18):
taking you know, the squad. The only player that didn't
play throughout the tiny Jamison was Warmsley and she probably
won't get to play against Australia because we need the
race in Wiki and Echinatia combination in there.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Vonne. Between now and the twentieth October when we play Australia,
What do you think are going to be the big
work on for the Silver Ferns.
Speaker 1 (06:41):
Yeah, well they have to leave their test series against
England behind them because Australia plays a totally different game.
It was interesting England are they played. They actually played
very similar to what we used to play with the zones.
They had a mid cord zone and a high zone
and I even saw a wall with the zone. It's
where all the players are in combination and it's like
(07:02):
a configuration of five players, and they marked spaces rather
than marking the players and New Zealand had real trouble
getting through that, getting through that stage. They shouldn't have
that they did because we play against that all the time.
And they also had a wall defense which at times
we struggle with and even last night we got caught
for hal ball on the stend to pass off. So
(07:24):
we have to leave that game totally behind because Australia
plays very much a one on one defense. But also
they have tremendous speed leading into obviously their suters. And
I believe that both Bruce and Western are back in
the team. They weren't in the team when England played
against them earlier on, so they will certainly add more strength.
(07:44):
But there is nothing unknown to the Ferns about Australia.
We know exactly how they play, who they will play,
so you know that there's not that unknown going into that.
But you know it's actually another start because they cannot
just take what they've just done into the next encounter
because some of the stuff like we did will not
(08:05):
work against Australia. And one of the ones I mentioned
was with Mason. I love it play. I can see
her improving. I can see that she can see the intercept,
but you know she has to really improve on her
timing and that's something that they will I'm sure they
will work on. And they in fact get together again
on Thursday, so you know, it's sort of straight back
(08:27):
into the next this series, and this is going to
show exactly where New Zealand is at on the development stage.
And you can say we're building towards the World Champs. No,
no time. I don't believe that. I believe every time
you come out standing there, you've played in the national
as is being played. It is about score for the players,
it's about performance, but for everyone else at the end
(08:50):
of the day, it is about the score.
Speaker 2 (08:52):
I guess the good thing is that they're getting together
on Thursday. They're going to have some time together before
we meet Australia on the twentieth, and that's a real positive.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Yeah, because in the plast they also, like Dame Nolintaro,
indicated that for this test series, they actually did have
a camp prior to this test series, because normally what
happens they get together like three or four days before,
so you know, there were set combinations that were always
going to be played, like Prince of the Mason Jackson
is a pulse combination. But the problem with that is
(09:23):
you've got to be very careful that you don't just
take what you do in A and Z to the
international level, because it is a gigantic step up, you know,
going from that into the international scene, and I think
some of the players they certainly learned that the hard way.
But yeah, opportunity now, the main thing really is for
(09:43):
the players to leave that behind and now look at
exactly what's required for it. You still want to play
your own own team play, but some of the things
that they did up they're going, oh, you know, it's
not going to be as easy race. The rekiference last
night against Kwashi from England. You know, she had a
field day. Grace was available all the time and if
(10:06):
nothing else, the Ferns could just want a bomber pass
into her. Will they be able to do that against Australia,
I don't think so, not with Bruce and Weston there
and Cloi also will be there. So yeah, it's a
different ballgame. They're going to have to work on attack
and defensively they've got to be They've got to be
accurate because otherwise through that mid court Australia it's just
(10:29):
going to play with speed. So again, our mid court
is going to be vital. I think they have grown absolutely.
I like O'Brien Gordon combination, which is what we saw
last night. You know, they are improving together. So yeah,
I think it's going to come down to how that
mid court performs.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
Von love your work, take a break and we'll hear
from you again closer to that Constellation Cup. Thank you
so much.
Speaker 1 (10:51):
Yeah, look forward to it.
