When it's down to the line, you made a call
on eight Weekend Sports with Jason Pine, News Talk zivy so.

Speaker 2 (04:14):
Liam Lawson will make his full time Red Ball Formula
One debut from eighteenth on the Grid this afternoon, after
being eliminated in the opening qualifying session for the Australian
Grand Prix and Melbourne yesterday. He struggled for pace and
Friday's two practices after clipping the wall on the first
and then a power unit issue limited him to just

(04:35):
two warm up laps in yesterday's final practice.

Speaker 3 (04:38):
Liam Lawson's in real trouble going into qualifying here. He's
done a sum total of two laps and if he
thought it was a battery recharge issue, then it's turned
out to be a larger.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Power unit problem.

Speaker 3 (04:51):
The team are confirming that it's a pneumatic problem. Were
on the air system of the of the power units
and there are first six eight mechanics working on this car.
At the moment the floor's coming off, the engine covers.

Speaker 4 (05:07):
Are all off.

Speaker 3 (05:07):
Lawson has long since taken his crash helmet off. I
think might well be out of the session and that
would be a real hammer blow going into the first
qualifying session.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
Of the year from Liam laws Indeed, he went into
qualifying Liam Lawson on the back foot, failed to advance
out of Qualifier one after twice having to abandon qualifying
lap attempts after going off the track at Melbourne's Albert
Park circuit. So Orlando Norris will start on poll with
his McLaren teammate Australian Oscar pus Stree second, and Liam
Lawson's Red Bull teammate and four time defending world champion

(05:40):
Max for stapp And third on the grid. The race
underway at five This afternoon, New Zealand time. Let's get
you to Melbourne for a preview. Bring in highly respected
and experienced freelance Formula one journalist and broadcaster Chris Medland.
You can read him at racer dot com and also
in Motorsport Magazine and hear him on Sirius xf XM

(06:01):
radio in the United States. Chris, thanks for joining us
across New Zealand to preview the Australian Grand Prix. Let's
start with Liam Lawson. Can you summarize the last two
days of Liam Lawson's life for us?

Speaker 5 (06:15):
Yeah, I certainly can, and I to be honest, I
say pretty unfortunate. There was a bit of a learning
process for him this weekend. He's never driven on this
track in Melbourne. Albert Parks started toasting Formula two races recently,
but Liam wasn't racing in Formula two when it happened.
So all the rookies coming into F one have at
least raced here in junior categories. Liam hasn't, so on
the first day he was trying to just get up

(06:36):
to speed and then the track, and then yesterday for
qualifying he was looking to really kind of ramp things up,
but they had a car issue that was nothing to
do with him, it's to do with the power unit,
and that meant that he didn't run a tall in
the final practice session, so he was very unprepared for qualifying.
He was on a decent enough lap that should have
helped him advance a bit further, but then he had
a bit of a moment, ended up going off and

(06:57):
missed out early on. So that's kind of a byproduct
of the lack of running he's had compared to other
people because it's just so competitive this season.

Speaker 6 (07:04):
So yeah, pretty tough couple of days for him.

Speaker 2 (07:06):
So if within extrapolight that forward, he's had very little
experience I think, just fifty two laps across the three
practice sessions, and as you say, qualifying didn't go as
wy yesterday either. So how big a disadvantage will that
be for the race proper this afternoon.

Speaker 5 (07:22):
It would be a very big one in the sense
if it was dry. But right now I'm talking to
you and it is hammering down with rain. It's going
to be a fully wet race as it stands, which
would be perfect for him. He said, Actually he would
love some rain because even tho it would be difficult
for him starting where he is if it was dry.
He's looking at it pragmatically. Yes, his first race with
Red Bull. He just needs to gain some experience and

(07:42):
he might not be able to move forward very quickly.
It's quite tough to over take care in the dry,
but that would still give him a full race distance
to try and really get under his belt and just
start to build that experience up in the wet all
better off. So this is exactly what he was hoping
for and looking for with something that would really spice
things up.

Speaker 2 (07:58):
So his Red Bull teammate four time defending champion Max
the step and he'll start from third on the grid.
What did you make of his last couple of days?

Speaker 5 (08:07):
To be honest, very impressive because the Red Bull didn't
look great when we went to pre season testing in
Bahrain a few weeks ago. It looked like there's a
lot of work for Red Bull to do, and even
on Friday in the practice sessions that we were talking about,
it didn't look like it was going to be competing
at the very front end. It looked like it was
one of the top four cars, but maybe a step
behind the McLaren and the Ferrari and even the Mercedes

(08:27):
could look quite good. Overnight Friday into Saturday. Red Bull
made a really good step with that car, made a
lot of good progress obviously with the work they've done
back in their factory, and Max was right in the
mix of pole position up until the end of qualifying
and at that point McLaren just had a little bit
more in hand to bring out in terms of performance.
So third place with him on the grid is probably
exceeding expectations. And he's another one who will be walking

(08:49):
in here today with a huge smile in his face
with wet weather because he really is one of the
best wet weather drivers in the sport and he's producing
brilliant performances in the wet and this is a level
of when it's raining, it's down much more to drivers
skill than car performance.

Speaker 6 (09:02):
So yeah, we could see a bit of an epic race.

Speaker 2 (09:04):
Looking forward to George Russell and the Messada. He's alongside
Mex for step and on the grid. They've got a
bit of history these two, haven't they they have.

Speaker 5 (09:12):
I'm glad you brought that up because I hadn't mentioned
it on the Max section, But yeah, they had a
pretty big bit of beef. Towards end of last season,
Max was upset that George had essentially tried to get
him a penalty at the penultimate race of the season
and actually successfully got him a penalty. The Max felt
was undeserved and he didn't like the way George was
acting in the stewards room. So then Max went and
told George what he thought of him and what he

(09:33):
would do if they're racing side by side on track.
George didn't like that either, So this war of words
started and it really carried over got very strong at
the final race in Abi Dabbie. Obviously they've had an
off season where they've not been racing against each other,
but they still both said, you know, we haven't spoken,
we're not bothered about being friends. So yeah, those two
will to will into Turm one that is definitely worth watching.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
Looking forward to Orlando Norris and Oscar Piastre as I
say one and two on the grid. Even though the
powers that be at McLaren seemed to be downplaying how
much faster they are than everybody else, how much faster
are they than everybody else?

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Well, basically on qualifying yesterday, about a quarter of a
second if not a little bit more, which in modern
day of one is actually a big gap. Gaps used
to be way bigger than that, and it used to
be kind of less competitive across the field. You'd have
some teams that were a big step ahead of others.
But everything's been so close. We've been seeing a difference
of like a tenth or two here and there. But yeah,
Lando put it on pole by nearly zero point four seconds,

(10:27):
so nearly half a second over Maxistappen in third as
the first non McLaren car, and that was a really
impressive performance. But you're right, the team are always going
to talk it down anyway. They don't want to build
pressure on themselves by saying, oh, we're the best team
with the fastest car, because then if you don't win,
you look stupid. But at the same time, not only McLaren,
but Ferrari themselves and the Total Wolf yesterday, we're all

(10:48):
saying they expected more from Ferrari and they just think
Ferrari got it wrong so far this weekend. Ferrari had
looked very competitive going into qualifying, like they could get
close to McLaren, but they didn't manage to do so,
and they ended up seven to eighth on the grid,
So it seems to be that they dropped the ball
a little bit and that's made the gap look even bigger.
So the good thing about the Formula one nowadays is
you go from one track to another and the pecking

(11:09):
ont of changes, and it means you do not know
for certain going to each venue who's going to be best.

Speaker 2 (11:14):
He mentioned they're the Ferraris of Charla Clear in Lewis
Hamilton's seventh and eighth, as you wrote in one of
your pieces that certainly was not in the script. You
talked there about them dropping the ball what actually happened.

Speaker 5 (11:25):
So essentially, yes, there was an extremely hot day, but
there wasn't a huge amount of sunshine actually for a
lot of it, so we had very high temperatures and
teams were trying to understand how to get the tires
working in those temperatures. But when the sunshine then disappeared
when it was out, it would raise the track temperature
quite a lot. When cloud cover hid it, even though
the air temperature stayed high, the track temperaure would drop,
and both drivers suggested that the team didn't really react

(11:47):
to that very well. They kind of stuck to their
plan from before qualifying and didn't adapt to the changing
track temperatures like others did, so that way they didn't
get the best performance out of the tires. And the
tires are obviously the only thing touching the track to
give your grip, so if you don't get those working properly,
you're going to be in trouble. So yeah, they just
sound like they didn't quite react properly. But they're big
into the data after this weekend and see what they

(12:08):
can learn for the next race in China.

Speaker 2 (12:10):
And Yuki Sonoda and the racing Bulls. Cara's fifth on
the grid was that the biggest surprise Chris, for you
how high up the grid he is?

Speaker 7 (12:19):
It was. Yeah.

Speaker 5 (12:20):
I actually hosted an event with Yuki on Friday night
and he'd been fourth in the second practice session that day,
so he was very popular because he was looking like
he was scept for a good weekend and he joked
that he could maybe go and get on the podium
or something. But even he was saying, you know, top
five would be incredible and a stretch, you know, it
would be a surprise to get up there, and in reality,
the racing balls card that he drives that no stage

(12:40):
had really looked that strong until we got here and
did second practice, so that did come out of the
blue a little bit, and certainly to stay up there
across two days was very impressive. He did say he
thinks he got a little bit of a toe at
one point as well a bit of a slipstream that
helped his final lap time and got him up to
fifth place. But it was a very strong performance and
to be honest, Yuki's probably one of those coming here
today now going.

Speaker 6 (13:00):
Why is it raining?

Speaker 5 (13:01):
He would want it to be a nice, boring, dry
race and give him a chance to staying there. But
he's certainly he will have felt he had a point
to prove because Liam Lawson was given the red Bull
see over UK red Bulls or more potential than Liam
and the way he races. But Yuki then is trying
to prove them wrong. And he's a really likable character
that you know. He got on very well with Liam.
He gets on very well with a lot of people
in this paddock, and that was a popular start I

(13:22):
think to see him at least perform well, but people
want to see Liam doing the same.

Speaker 2 (13:26):
All right. Chris the finish You've mentioned the rain a
number of times in rightly so because it is going
to play huge part today. But how big a part
and what do you predict for this rice given the
weather conditions that are expected.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
Yeah, if it stays wet like this, I think we're
going to have a bit of chaos. Actually, this is
a semi temporary circuit. We're in Albert Park, so yeah,
the roads are not always the highest grip for in
wet weather. There's a lot of painted lines for normal
road markings that can get very slippery. So I think
we'll see a few moments, a few incidents, you know,
drivers going off And I would put money probably right

(14:01):
now on Max.

Speaker 6 (14:02):
That staff and winning.

Speaker 5 (14:03):
The way he adapts to these conditions just is a
level above most other people right now. In his prime,
Lewis Hamilton would be in that mix too, but he's
obviously just moved teams.

Speaker 6 (14:10):
This is his first time a Ferrari.

Speaker 5 (14:12):
He still needs to learn a lot about that car,
how it reacts, how it operates. So yeah, I think
it's going to be one where I would say Max
right now is my favorite. From third on the grid,
the two McLaren drivers should be the favorites. They're starting
one and two and they have potentially the quiggest car,
but that advantage will be lessened by the wet weather.
And obviously they're fighting each other as well as fighting Max,

(14:33):
which is always a tough kind of line to tread.
Because you're trying not to cause an instant with your teammate.
You maybe leave a bit more margin, but that leads
a bit of uncertainty sometimes, and I think it's going
to be a really, really exciting either way.

Speaker 6 (14:45):
But yeah, i'd probably lean more towards the staff.

Speaker 2 (14:47):
And now that it's wet, all right, Just one more
very quick question, Liam Lawson, what does success look like
for him? You know, eighteenth on the grid. Anything higher
than eighteen is the success.

Speaker 5 (14:56):
Oh, absolutely, And I would expect him to finish hard
than eighteenth if he sees the checkered flag, And to
be honest, that's how I constitute success to him. It
would be just get that experience under his belt. If
it's raining, first time to drive a red Bull in
wet conditions, you know, this will be valuable experience moving forward.

Speaker 6 (15:10):
If it's not.

Speaker 5 (15:11):
As we've been talking about, he didn't have a huge
amount of time in the car the rest of this weekend,
so he's missed out on some running and just to
build up that experience bank so that he can make
a step forward at the next race, and he'll need
to do that gradually over a number of races. So
just to see the checker flag, make sure he's not
involved in any major incidents. Being wet, I think it
means there'll be a lot going on, and if he
does see the finish then it means he's probably going

(15:32):
to be having a lot of action to deal with
and moving forward. So yeah, I just think just make
sure he keeps his head down and keep his nose
clean and that would be a good race for him.

Speaker 2 (15:40):
Appreciate your outstanding analysis, Chris. Thanks so much for joining
us across New Zealand today.

Speaker 6 (15:45):
Not a problem, Thanks for having me.

Speaker 2 (15:47):
Thanks for joining us, Chris Chriss Midland Deer Live from Melbourne.
Where's you heard. It's hammering down with rain, which is
going to have a huge say in what happens this
afternoon twelve twenty two. Really really interesting analysis there. I
think the thing about murder sport and the fact that
Formula one heirs for the last couple of days on
the show anyway, taking scene to stay. Because Liam Lawson

(16:07):
is an Australia I've learned heaps. I've learned so much
because I'll freely admit this is not my sweet spot
at all. You know, obviously I'm interested in most sports,
but I wouldn't call myself, as I said yesterday, a
huge motorsport fan. But if F one is your sweet
spot or motorsport is in your wheelhouse, time for you

(16:27):
to react, Oh eight hundred and eighty ten eighty and
actually add to the knowledge bank here, educate the rest
of us because a lot of us are dipping our
toes into Formula one for maybe the first time or
you know, certainly not not something that we know a
lot about because Liam Lawson's there. But more on that
in a sect. But what is success today for Liam

(16:50):
Lawson from eighteenth on the grid? Is it simply finishing
higher than eighteenth and in the rain? How possible is this?
You have to think from what Chris just told us,
there could be someone do you say chaos on There
could be some chaos on the track this afternoon. So

(17:11):
if he manages to avoid that chaos and finish shot
and know in the teens somewhere or even in the
top ten, who knows a lot higher than eighteenth if
he avoids the carness. LEAs not forget as well that
this is event one of twenty four. There are a
twenty four Grand Prix across the year. Yes, you want
to start the season well and make a good first impression,
but the season does not rise and fall on what

(17:35):
happens in Melbourne this afternoon. There has been a lot
of hype around this, especially over here, especially over here,
and I really don't think, as I said before, there
would be as much focus on one in twenty twenty
five here in New Zealand if Lillam Lawson wasn't in it.
And even casual motorsport fans or people who don't usually

(17:55):
take too much notice of F one are keeping tabs
on this because one of the drivers is one of ours.
It would be just awesome to see him do well,
wouldn't it, Not just this afternoon but across the year.
So what do you predict, what is realistic? What is likely?
Let's talk to me F one oh eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty nine two ninety two if you would

(18:17):
like to send a text. Twelve twenty five Angus is
in Melbourne. How are you, matey?

Speaker 8 (18:23):
You're pretty good. Hey, sorry, I can't promise you a
teck at this time, but ye're not coming to you
from a very wet Melbourne.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
I'm gonna say. I mean we also people will remember
maybe that you joined us from on the water during
sale GP. Is this what you do? You just do?
You just travel the globe going to the top sporting events.

Speaker 8 (18:41):
Ah, you get something like that. Yeah, you know I
need the good ones thone.

Speaker 2 (18:45):
Okay, now we've just had our correspondent on from Melbourne.
He was telling us how wet it is. Can you
confirm that is pouring?

Speaker 8 (18:51):
I'm coming out. I actually inside the F one paddock
right now. We have paddock passes. We're just down on
the walk watching the drivers come through, just seeing a
couple of stars. Sites just came in about half an
hour ago pastre when and we couldn't get within a
meter of him. A security detail was as probably good
as the president's. But yeah, no, it's yeah, it's come
really good as some Yeah, but it is absolutely soaking.

(19:12):
It's it's not cold.

Speaker 4 (19:13):
It's probably about too many.

Speaker 8 (19:14):
Degrees so look, it's not cold, but it's Yeah, it's
definitely quite wet.

Speaker 2 (19:18):
Have you caught sight of Liam Lawson in your in
your time there?

Speaker 8 (19:21):
Very briefly he was in They kind of have like
their hospitality suites and there's like a little mini road
that runs down the middle of them. He was kind
of back in the hospitality suite, kind of the you know,
behind the frosted glass and whatnot. I could see him briefly,
but he looks pretty focused. Same with Yeah, I saw
Christian Hounor as well, So yeah, they all look pretty
pretty locked in. But yeah, pretty serious time down there.

Speaker 2 (19:39):
So what about the wider experience of being there, Angus?
What was it? You know? Where can you go? What
can you see? What is worth doing when you're there?

Speaker 8 (19:47):
Well, yeah, I'm not gonna Lie've got I've got pretty
good passes this year. Yeah, we got pretty good arm
We did get a bit of a contact and so
we did get some pretty good passes. We've been in
the paddock, We've had access to pretty much most of
the drivers and the team principles. We've also had a
bit of at the hospitality onside, which has been really nice.
But I except for probably ninety to ninety five percent
of people that's not the same experience. It's usually kind

(20:08):
of like your ga. Yeah, you know, on the craft
banks and whatnot. I have done grandstands previously. You know,
in the grand stand that's usually probably the best value
for money and you get a really good view, guaranteed
seat and whatnot. So that's yeah, that's probably that's if
I do it again, and I probably will, that's probably
what I'll do an exist.

Speaker 2 (20:23):
And in terms of the numbers, have you got any
engauge on how many people will turn up today to watch?

Speaker 9 (20:27):
Yep?

Speaker 8 (20:28):
Yeah, No, they asually promote it quite a bit, so
they're expecting across the whole week. I'll give you a
dogs to the number. They're expecting over five hundred thousand,
but you've got a factor and that that's across four days.
So on the first day or the first property of
kind of practice, which was Friday, they had a crowd
of one hundred and twenty five thousand. Yesterday I thought
it was just over one hundred and fifty seven thousand,
and I'm not sure what they're expecting today. So they

(20:49):
usually they kind of hype the crowd up of it
usual announced number.

Speaker 10 (20:51):
Just record a race.

Speaker 2 (20:52):
That's so where do they put them all? They can't
all be seated, surely.

Speaker 8 (20:56):
No, not at all. Now, So these green stands around
the kind of main bins and turns and whatnot and
overtaking its own. So then pretty much in between there
it's just a bit of a free for all really,
and it's all standing. And it's usually about me to
meet a back from the track and it's all kind
of standing. They've got a couple of grass banks and
verges and a couple of like little mixture stands. That's
were a lot of live. I've got a couple of
mates off send down in the in the ga they

(21:16):
kind of find this spot post up for the day
and say.

Speaker 2 (21:18):
There outstanding, So what are you? What are you predicting
this afternoon for for Liam Lawson? What would be good
for him this afternoon?

Speaker 8 (21:25):
That's it's going to be hard. But I mean the
thing I would say, as you know, we all know
what happened yesterday, where he where he is, and given
the conditions, you could naff for much more, you know.
But it was a dry race, you know where I'll
be probably you know I was enthusiastic, but wet race,
anything could happen, literally anything could happen.

Speaker 7 (21:43):
You know.

Speaker 8 (21:43):
One thing a lot of people will think they have
been talking about here is oh, yeah, we've just seen
Liam's girlfriend just walk past, So it could could be
seeing Lim Lawson soon actually and basically yea, so basically
that's yeah. So it's going to happen, and if he's
going to get a chance, it'll be during the wet race.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
All right, So so can we can we can say
live on here, you've seen Liam Lawson's girlfriend. I think
this is good, just walk past.

Speaker 8 (22:06):
She's got a bit of security detail with her. She's
gone into padic now, so i'd say he's about to
come past as well.

Speaker 2 (22:11):
So yeah, what sort of security detail have you employed?

Speaker 6 (22:15):
I haven't got in it.

Speaker 8 (22:16):
Do you know something?

Speaker 2 (22:16):
No, I just feel as though you're the kind of
guy who would need to be protected from the great unwashed.

Speaker 8 (22:22):
No, mate, I don't know. I need se hear it
everwhere from myself.

Speaker 2 (22:25):
Great to chant. Yeah, I guess the enjoy enjoyed today, mate,
Thanks for thanks for phoning in. Just funny all of
its mate, There you go, our angers. He's become a
bit of a regular here. On weekend Sport. He was
out on the water at Sale GP, he's over at
the Australian Grand Prix. Goodness only knows where he might
end up next. Twelve twenty nine O eight one hundred
and eighty ten eighty. Let's talk some if one Mark
can I mate?

Speaker 4 (22:47):
Yeah, gys, the lucky by isn't there?

Speaker 2 (22:48):
He certainly is. Yeah, that lucky is one word for it. Yes, indeed.

Speaker 4 (22:53):
Yeah, I was listening to your show yesterday and a
squad and cight for really how it seems like the
Red Bull Carr is very difficult to drive and you know,
maybe we underestimate how good men for stuff and is
and probably peris. You know, listening to your show yesterday
was sort of a bit maligned really because you know

(23:14):
it could be that that car is just so hard
to drive. You know, it takes a very good driver
to tame it almost and you know, seeing what happened
to Liam Lawson yesterday considering Uki, well he qualified fiftill
six something and yeah, and maybe that that other car,
even though it's less performance, it's easier to drive. And

(23:37):
to me, yeah it was. It was a really good
interview you did yesterday and it's sort of yeah, gave
him with a lot more information than I sort of
knew about it, you know, But yeah, maybe he's driving
a really difficult car.

Speaker 2 (23:50):
Well, I think that's I did some more reading on it.
Mark and the number two seat at red Ball, you know,
behind or alongside the step and well actually behind him,
let's be honest, has been a bit of a poison
jealous You're right. I mean the car is set up,
the car set up for Max and as it was,
it was one of our two guests yesterday, Bob McMurray,
I think it was, he said, look whatever Max, whatever
Max wants, Max gets and you kind of have to

(24:12):
put up with that. So yeah, maybe he's just got
a very unique style of driving, which you know, for
him has been tremendously successful, but for his number two
is something that takes a bit of getting used to.

Speaker 4 (24:25):
Well, I mean, Prarie has had some pretty awful results,
and I mean put people put it down to whatever
the yips like in golf or something like that. But
I mean maybe it's just the car.

Speaker 11 (24:34):
Yeah, I mean that.

Speaker 4 (24:35):
It'd be interesting to see how he develops at a
time because he's obviously got the talent. He wouldn't be
one of the twenty drivers. He's got a seat less
of you know, done the metrics on him and know
how good he is to get there, you know.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
Indeed, yeah, they must see something in them which a
lot of people have looking forward to seeing. Our plays
are out. Mark, good to chat, toy mat, Thanks for
calling in eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our
number on text from Ian's success would be one finish
the race. Two if he even picks up one point,
I think the team would be wrapped after the Q
three problems with the car. Thanks, and yeah, it certainly

(25:06):
didn't go the way that Liam Lawson would have hoped
in practice or in qualifying. It goes without saying, doesn't it.
He's back in eighteenth on the grid. But funny things
happen when it rains in F one is another thing
that I've learned from listening to people who are a
lot more in the know than me. If you're in
the know, or even if you dislike to chew this over,

(25:27):
eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number. Nine
two ninety two for text messages. Twenty eight to one
term hold there with you right after the spear line
if you would like to jump aboard as we talk
Formula one until one here on news Talks, heb.

Speaker 1 (25:39):
It's more than just a game weekend sport with Jason
Fine and GJ. Gunnomes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder,
News Talks NB.

Speaker 2 (25:48):
Twenty five to one News Talks. HEB talking Formula one
O eight hundred and eighty ten eighty Any thoughts on
the Australian Grand Prix if you've been, I'd be keen
to hear about your experiences there. We just had angus
from deep in the hospitality sector. By the sounds of
it there, If you've been, what's it like? What was
the experience like? We're going to oh, eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty five hundred thousand people across the across

(26:12):
the duration of the event. Hello, Tim, thanks for holding
hi plenty. How are you, Tim? Im great?

Speaker 12 (26:19):
It's good. I can the former way that's hot tonon
Hopenyll be lots of safety cars.

Speaker 2 (26:25):
Lots of safety cars, So explain it to all of us, Tim,
they come out when there's a crash.

Speaker 12 (26:29):
Right, Yes, there were heaps of crasses.

Speaker 2 (26:32):
Just because of the weather. Do you think that's it's
going to be the main factor this afternoon?

Speaker 12 (26:37):
You may bee maybe here yep, yeah, well we all
over the place.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
Given that, then, Tim, and there seems to be playing
into someone like Liam Lawson's hands because he's so far back.
You would have to expect that on a dry day
with fewer crashes, hard of him to make his way
up the field. So from eighteenth there's actually is it
better that he's sort of away, way back and the
carnage might all just happen in front of him?

Speaker 12 (27:02):
Yes, yes you are there, because I watched a car
phone last night too.

Speaker 2 (27:07):
Well, so what did you what else did you take
out of qualifying? Do you think the to McLaren's are
by far the fastest?

Speaker 12 (27:16):
Yes, yes, yep, you are Yep, all.

Speaker 2 (27:20):
Right, Tim, tell us give us, give us a finishing
position for Liam then still come eighth, eighth Yep. I
love the optimism, Tim, I love the optimism. Thanks for
calling in, mate, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastre. The to
McLaren drivers are on the front rid of the grid,
Max for Stappin and George Russell, who as you heard

(27:41):
Chris Midland say, I've got a bit of beef. That'll
be interesting to watch the first corner. I think Noras
and Piastre. They're obviously teammates. They'll get to the first
corner first. The Stappin and Russell just keep an eye
on that as as they head towards the first corner.
And Yuki Sonoda, who of course is part of the
Racing Bulls set up, but in the second sort of
the second team, if you like, fifth on the grid.

(28:02):
So you know, I'm sure that the fans of Yuki
Sonoda are looking at that and looking at Liam Lawson
in eighteenth and saying I told you so, there's a
lot more to it than that, But Yuki Sanoda is
fifth on the grid.

Speaker 13 (28:15):
Kelly, Hello, Yeah, and I'm just talk about Lamb. I
think his main role in the team for the Red
Ball he has to score points. If he doesn't score points,
that's going to put the pressure on him every time
he doesn't score points. So that's his whole idea of
being in the team because they are after constructor point.

(28:39):
So I think that he's got to finish in the
top ten. If he doesn't finish in the top ten,
it's not a good.

Speaker 11 (28:45):
Day for him.

Speaker 2 (28:46):
Yeah, And Kelly make a great point because I've heard
that spoken about a lot that Red Bull as much
as obviously the steppens there man to win the Drivers Championship,
the Constructors Championship still has quite a bit of prestige
about it, does it.

Speaker 13 (28:59):
Yeah, well that's where they get their money from. The
money other than their sponsors, they get right from the
te T viewership, so that's money for that. So for
every point that you get, the further up the chain
you follow. It's like Ferrari, they went from I think
I think they went from first position last year and

(29:21):
then they dropped back to second and they lost so
much money. And it's all about money, there's nothing else.
And it's the same with Jack Doing and the other team.
If he doesn't perform, there's a guy sitting there and
he's bringing twenty three million dollars to the team, so
he's got a lot more pressure on him. So it's

(29:45):
all about money. And if you're not in the points,
it means not thing. That's why they weren't happy with
Perez and they canceled his contract for this year as
as he wasn't scoring points. And Red Ball went from
being the Drivers Champion team to being third, So they
get third pack of position, like for your garaging, So

(30:09):
number one team gets the first pack, so then then
it goes down from that, so they get the end
of either the first of the gate packs or the last.

Speaker 2 (30:21):
Kelly, it seems as though McLaren are faster than everybody else.
They're the first two group positions. So how difficult is
it going to be for anybody else, Red Ball, Ferrari,
Mercedes to even challenge them for the Constructors Championship.

Speaker 13 (30:36):
Oh but you saw last year how red Bull and
Ferrari were fast at the start of last year. Halfway
through the season, McLaren just packed up the game and
they just ran away with it. The best team is McLaren.
They got the two best drivers as in competitiveness, they

(30:58):
ain't going to decide who's going to be the number
one driver until halfway through that season, so they'll just
leave it up to the two. But they are I'm
not allowed to take each other out. It's a no no.
And so between the two drivers, whoever gets to jump
on the start and being in the wet once you're
out front, you've got clear visibility behind you. You've got

(31:19):
to spray of those rooster tails. I don't know how
anybody can see. And they got to look at their
breaking marks, and if you want to attempt to pass someone,
you've got to be real brave and say. And then
on a street circuit there's no runoff, there is no
runoff to go. It's into the fence and that's it.

(31:39):
So you're either going to be hero or zero. And
with you Yuki, he's very good in the rain, and
so is for Staffan. So it's actually good to see
that Yuki's up there. But I think just trying to
get points for that team, because the more points that

(32:00):
team's worth, the better sailor is for Red Bull because
they've been trying to sell that team to someone else
to take over. But when you're not getting money from
the TV rights, it's not worth a lot. But if
it's up there and the point, so if they can
get two drivers and they in the top ten, they

(32:22):
get points, it's worth money.

Speaker 2 (32:24):
Great analysis, Kelly, Just so just before you go, so,
so Lando Norris an Oscar Piastree are aren't a one two,
you know, in any particular order for McLaren at the.

Speaker 13 (32:34):
Moment, I think Lando is number one. But they still
give the rights for Oscar to go hard at them.
They don't they don't say no you can't do this
and you can't do that. Sometimes they do. They don't
want to jeopardize the points, and they'll say, right, you've

(32:57):
got to pull over and let the other one pass
because he got pole whatever, and he's done a better job.
The thing is with like when you look at Mercedes,
George Russell was their number one driver, so if anyone
Antonelli is starting to beat him too much, they'll say,

(33:17):
you've got to pull back and let George.

Speaker 11 (33:19):
Russell through because they want George to win.

Speaker 13 (33:22):
And then it's the same with Ferrari. Last year it
was Leclair. They wanted Leclair to be on points. They
told the Spaniard to pull back and he was sold off. So,
as I say, they most teams that have a number
one driver, it's same with Max. Max won't have a
driver that will challenge him. They'll just say, no, you

(33:47):
hang back. And that's how it is. You either like
it or your lump. But when Riccardo was there and
Max joined Ricardo, it used to be Riccardo was the
number one and then all of a sudden it went
to Max. And that's why Riccardo actually left Red Ball
in the first place.

Speaker 2 (34:06):
You've got a move mate, but you've given us great insight. Thanks.
I know you'll be keeping a close signent this afternoon.
Thanks indeed for your call, Appreciate it very much. Seventeen
to one News Talk to be after the break. Another
one of our top motorsport exponents, albeit in a slightly
different car, Hayden Padden on Liam Lawson when we come
back the.

Speaker 1 (34:24):
Tough questions off the turf Weekend Sport with Jason Pine
and GJ. Gunnerholmes, New Zealand's most trusted home builder News talking.

Speaker 2 (34:33):
Liam Lawson at the F one Grand Prix. Another of
our elite drivers willbeit in a rally cars Hayden Padden,
who last year on a second straight European Rally Championship,
the latest achievement in his storied and ongoing career. Hayden
patterns with us how do you reckon? Liam will be
feeling ahead of his first start in the full time
seat this afternoon.

Speaker 10 (34:50):
Hayden obviously is a massive opportunity for Liam, and I
guess that the first emotion will be excitement. You know,
it's a very big opportunity that he's got there and
something he's obviously worked very hard to achieve. So excitement,
but I guess that comes you know, pressure. You know,
it's a very cutthroat world of any professional sport, and

(35:12):
you know, while you want to enjoy the moment, you
know how much pressure there is to perform as well.
So I'm sure there'll be mixed emotions.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
How do you deal with those mixed emotions? Because you've
landed on a really interesting point. Yeah you're excited, of
course you are, but it is cut throat. There are
only twenty of these seats, So how do you how
do you assess his ability to balance those emotions effectively?

Speaker 10 (35:33):
I think just put the helmet on. What happens in
a lot of motors BEFO, you put the helmet on,
and you trust your instincts, and you trust your natural
skill and what's that you've got there in the first
place to go out and do the job. And you know,
adrenaline as a very powerful tool. I want to get
that in that sort of moment and get the tunnel

(35:54):
vision and I guess, do what you do best. Then
you just got to trust and bank yourself. Really, So yeah,
he's obviously very talented. That's what's got in there. Now
he's got to make sure he enjoys the moment and
lets her talent were talking.

Speaker 2 (36:07):
In any car, in any form of motorsport. Are there
qualities that that all good drivers have in common?

Speaker 10 (36:16):
I think the end of the day, you've got to
be patient as one of the biggest factors. It takes
a long time to get to the top of any sport,
particularly motorsport. But you know, you've got to be willing
to dig that much deeper. You've got to be willing
to take risks that maybe some others aren't prepared to take.
And you've got to be a good team player, you know,
despite former one that other being one person in the
car or any form of motorsport. You know, you've got

(36:38):
to work well with your engineers, your teammates.

Speaker 2 (36:41):
It's about that whole package.

Speaker 10 (36:42):
And you know, New Zealand's got some very good training
tools at a disposable here through lights of the Motorsport
Academy and things that helps young drivers loan some of
those traits from an early early age. And yeah, you've
just got to again trust and those things that we've planned.

Speaker 2 (37:00):
Oh I've lost you there, you're still there aiding, Yeah, yep, yep,
sorry matey, I just lost you near the end of
that sentence, I think I've they're all good Formula one cars.
They can reach top speeds of what three hundred and
seventy five k ever its speed around three twenty during
a race and rally cars, you're also flying pretty close
to the line. How much of a factor does fear play.

Speaker 10 (37:23):
None, I'd say, you know, we all get very comfortable
in our own environment. So you know, despite three hundred
and fifty plus climeter is sounding fast. You know when
you do it often enough, or you naturally want as
a race drivers, you want to go faster. So you know,
it's just what you adapt to, what you used to
and to be honest, you know, while you need is

(37:43):
an element of fear that creates the adrenaline that we
need and that we throve off. You can't be focused
on the fear. If you're worried about the fear, then
you're simply not going to drive fast. So it's not
a factor at all.

Speaker 2 (37:55):
Do it take you as a driver, You know a
bit of time to get to that point where there
wasn't any trepidation anymore.

Speaker 10 (38:04):
It comes with time their earlier life, you know, I
guess just once that novelty factor wears off and you
get used to something and becomes a lot more natural there.
You just you become more relaxed and more comfortable in
your surroundings and that's when things often happen a lot
easier as well.

Speaker 2 (38:20):
And in the car, look, I don't know, but there
must be at those speeds some some fairly serious adrenaline,
you know, willing to pump itself through your veins. But
you've talked a couple of times they're about staying calm again,
is that a challenge in something that only comes with experience?

Speaker 10 (38:37):
Definitely, Like everyone's different, of course, you know, how you
control your body and your heart rates and your mindset.
Some people need to pump themselves up, some people need
to calm themselves down. So you know, it is a
very personalized aspect of it. But again, the more you
do it, the easier it becomes, becomes second acre it.
It almost becomes like writing, like the more often that

(38:58):
you're doing it. So you know, particularly for Liam at
the start of it, obviously he's done a couple of
half seasons and former one now, but you know, as
a season progresses, he's going to get more and more
comfortable and fast and naturally and that's where you've got
to be patient. You're going to be patient with the
process because you know he we are a very competitive person.
He'll want results straight away and that's where you have
to be obviously patient to give as results.

Speaker 2 (39:19):
How do you reckon? You'd go on an F one,
No good.

Speaker 10 (39:25):
I prefer a bit of gravel and a roof over
me head. So I've grown up on the gravels since
I was a kid, So very different skill sets, but
obviously very excited to see what Lean's going to do
this weekend and obviously we want the key, we to
be up there at the front, so it's going to
be pretty excited.

Speaker 2 (39:41):
Yeah, looking forward to it. You've had a bit on
as well. You took part in the Race of Champions
in Sydney last weekend. How do you enjoy that?

Speaker 11 (39:47):
I loved it.

Speaker 10 (39:47):
It was an awesome vent, different formats to what we
used to and probably didn't quite perform how I would
have liked, but yeah, it's just a cool event. Obviously,
now we get into our rally season started in Australia
next week as well in Canberra, and another busy season
and head on the gravel.

Speaker 2 (40:02):
Yeah, I see the Australian Rally Championship is in your sight.
So is that your main focused for twenty twenty five.

Speaker 10 (40:08):
Yeah, this stage it is. It's an unticked box. It's
something we haven't taken on before. So I love the
idea of a new challenge and something that hasn't been
done before and obviously possible. Was the last key to
go over there and win the championship, so we'd love
to go over and try and do something similar. But yeah,
it's going to be a big challenge, and we haven't
given up on Europe. You know. The budget hasn't quite
allowed to go back there at the moment this year,

(40:29):
but we are still in talks to try and get
back over there.

Speaker 2 (40:32):
That's good to hear and something completely different. Ambassador at
the New Zealand Golf Open, How did you enjoy that?

Speaker 10 (40:38):
Let's just saying driving a race car is easy than
playing golf, but no, I love it. You know, the
New Zealand it consessually one of my supporting highlights of
the week in terms of, you know, when all the
ambassadors get together and you know, we just have fun
and when you're on the course with the pros. It
really opens your eyes about how bad you your own golfers,
but just also just how good they are. And it's

(40:59):
just a it's a cool weekend. It's in a pretty
techular backdrop too.

Speaker 2 (41:03):
Good man, Hayden. We'll all be glued glued to our
TV to watch Liam this weekend and looking forward to
seeing how you go in twenty twenty five as well.
Thanks for taking the time for a chat mate, great
appreciate it. Thank you, No, thank you, Hayden. Hayden Patten.
On News Talks, There're b seven to one. The Rugby
Direct podcast are releasing a special edition at five o'clock
Tuesday morning, Elliott and Liam with Mark Robinson and Scott
Robertson discussing various issues, including the spring Box at Eden

(41:25):
Park this year.

Speaker 14 (41:26):
You mentioned Eden Park September the sixth, Yeah, how much
you're looking forward to that test already? The springbox coming
to town.

Speaker 15 (41:32):
Yeah, a great opportunity. You know it's on the line,
isn't it. Those are the ones you want to play
in and those ones that get Rugby every news. Jalnors
So everyone excited about so you It's definitely on their calendar.

Speaker 2 (41:44):
It's exciting Rugby Direct Special edition five am Tuesday morning.

Speaker 1 (41:50):
The only place to discuss the biggest sports issues on
and after fields.

Speaker 7 (41:55):
It's all on Weekend.

Speaker 16 (41:56):
Ford with Jason Pade on your home of Sport with
you Talks.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
Hello, They're welcome in one o sevens the time. I'm
Jason Pine and McDonald's show producer us this Weekend Sport
until three. Still hammering down in Melbourne. Will keep eyes
on that as race time draws closer five o'clock, we're
going to move away from Formula one for the meantime
after these texts. Of course, Aiden says, there's a great
video of Alex Albin talking about Max and the Red

(42:25):
Bull car on YouTube from when he was there. Kind
of makes sense why the number two drivers at Red
Bull struggle after watching that. Thank you, Aiden, Karen says, Piney,
my nineteen year old son and his nineteen year old
mate are at Albert Park. They paid their own way.
Hashtag school leavers straight into jobs. It's a long hashtag. Unfortunately,

(42:47):
says Karen, the daily Proof of Life texts have stopped.
I'm sure they're fine, Karen, I'm sure they're fine. Speaking
of which you might have heard us talking to Angus
last hour, and as we were talking to him, Liam
Lawson's girlfriend walked past where he was and so you know,
Lot would suggest that perhaps Liam was there in the

(43:08):
vicinity as well.

Speaker 7 (43:09):
Well.

Speaker 2 (43:09):
Shortly after we hung up the phone, a text arrived
from Angus a picture of he and Liam Lawson. So
we timed that terribly, didn't we. If we've been talking
to Angus Andy and Liam Lawson had walked past and
had just handed the phone over, we could have got
one of those exclusives that mean so much.

Speaker 17 (43:29):
That's generally how I try to time most of our
interviews to be honest, Piney, do you yeah, yeah, just
just on the hope that we could get someone even
more famous.

Speaker 2 (43:38):
So we just get in touch with people who are
in the general vicinity of famous people.

Speaker 17 (43:44):
That's been the plan for about three and a half years, Piney.
Should we call Angus now he might be able to
Boss Hamilton might be walking. Maybe they were just given
him three hours of your time, and hopefully should he
host actually even he.

Speaker 2 (43:58):
Could do an outside broadcast from Albert Park. Now great
to get the text from Angus that he got the
selfie with Liam Lawson. Good stuff. Maybe that's the stroke
of lucky needs. Heading into the race this afternoon, Mitchell
says Norris to win, Land of Norris to win. The
watch out for Williams. They'll be good. And I think,
says Mitchell, that Liam may struggle in the wet. He

(44:18):
doesn't have too much experience in the wet or on
this track. Thank you very much indeed for all your
calls and correspondence. The White Ferns are about to beat
Sri Lanka. They need one run with ten balls remaining
three down. One thirteen for seven is what Sri Lanka got.
The White Ferns are one thirteen for three with Sharp

(44:39):
and Halliday out there. So as I say, one more
run from ten balls and they will tie that series.
And as we speak to you, the one run has achieved,
smash down the ground for four. There we go, game over?
Is he sharpening the winning runs and New Zealand winning
by seven wickets. So on around an hour or so,
it'll be the black Caps turn up against Pakistan doubleheader

(45:01):
on a beautiful day in christ Church. So will I
bring you team new and toss details, et cetera and
pregres scores As we stay on the year, this afternoon
from the second of the double header cricket matches at Hagleyoval.
Speaking of christ Church, the Crusaders have moved to second
on the Super Rugby table with a fifty five thirty

(45:24):
three win over the Western Force in christ Church yesterday
on another beautiful day. They ran a nine tries to
four Winger Machas Springer scored a record equalling five of
those tries in or Well.

Speaker 18 (45:37):
Jordan, he'll pen the years back. He gets it out
to Maccus Pregger and it's tends up to Marco Man
kicks through, bounce up all me interesting, goes over it
or up and rans in the lap of a Crusader
who falls over the line. It's Maccus Bragger again. Oh
kind of holds the pass for Jordan. He eventually sent

(45:58):
to White to Maccus Bragger and now the Creger's got
a hat trick. Jordan, lovely Harbobridge pass to Maccusrea dances
down the touch on Backer Stragger. That is his best
in the afternoon, can't three up Springer.

Speaker 7 (46:15):
Who wants five?

Speaker 6 (46:16):
He might get a chance at.

Speaker 19 (46:20):
Mecca Spragger.

Speaker 18 (46:21):
Oh wow, five are the best to young Maccus Spragger.

Speaker 2 (46:27):
High excitement in the crowd and in the cold try
box too, brilliantly called by Nick Gully. There yesterday, maccas
Springer just the second man in Super rugby history to
score five tries in the game. The other was the
late Sean wan Nui, who did so for the Chiefs
against the Warra Tars back in two thousand and one.
Macca Springer is with us on weekends for congrats. Mate.
When was the last time you scored five tries in

(46:49):
one game? Was it back at school or something?

Speaker 11 (46:52):
Yeah?

Speaker 20 (46:53):
No, I never I've never scored five tries in the game,
so the first of me, that's pretty special.

Speaker 2 (46:59):
It's well something you've given the overnight tests. Now are
you woken up? I mean, how do you reflect on
on what played out yesterday, not just for you but
with the Crusaders as well.

Speaker 20 (47:09):
To be fair, I still don't really think it's through.
I don't think it's really kicked in on you know,
a few messages coming in, but it's very special for
me and obviously quick from the teams did a lot
to help me get those five, so pretty much took
with credit to them. But yeah, it's a tough game.
Leading in thirty three points. It's very not ideal for

(47:30):
a super team. So we could feel the points, but
we're going to be able to defend it as well.

Speaker 2 (47:35):
A couple of year tries were on the end of
back line moves, but you also went hunting for work
as well. I want to talk about your kick and
chase in the moment, but the second try good evidence
of that you like sort of you know, popping up
in different places rather than just hanging out on the fringes.

Speaker 20 (47:50):
Yeah, I think it's a bit of a work on
from my season last year, just getting a bit more
involved in getting the hands on the ball. So you
watched the news game and see how much it gets
involved and you touched he gets chop a little bit
out of there, and just just wanted to get as
involved as much as I could, and I guess showed
as well.

Speaker 2 (48:07):
And the fourth one that the kick and chase down
the left wing side, you must have enjoyed that. I
think you said afterwards a Tom Marshall trick from back
in Tasman.

Speaker 20 (48:15):
Yeah, it's a Tom Marshall's special. When he started coaching,
you told me playing it, actually told me that, so
all credit to him for that.

Speaker 2 (48:23):
What do you what sort of pictures are you seeing
when you you know, because you get it. I think
on about halfway, Uh, you know what? What what is
going through your mind in the in the split second
that you have to make your decision about what you
do next.

Speaker 20 (48:36):
I think it's just where the defense is, how fast
they're coming up, and if I can get to that
outside and put on the foot.

Speaker 11 (48:42):
Then we'll take it.

Speaker 20 (48:43):
But it's all kind of trying to do it at training.
So it comes as an instinct when you did to.

Speaker 2 (48:48):
A game and you made on the other wing. Seev
Reese he got a hat trick as well, now just
one short of the all time Super Rugby tri scoring record,
he's got sixty four. Now how much of a help
has has he been to you as you developed your career?

Speaker 20 (49:03):
Yeah, he's a special player. Obviously got hold back to
where they don't have been a huge part of my career.
Obviously two years with them, learn a lot a lot
from both of them, So now they are pretty extraordinary players.
And to be able to rub shoulders with them every day,
every week and even in the games was awesome. So

(49:24):
you have to take a lot from them, But so
keep picking their brains for a bit more so.

Speaker 2 (49:28):
Yeah, as you say, see a recent Will Jordan, it's
not a bad, bad couple of players to be part
of a back three with. Are you still able though,
Do you feel able to contribute your voice during the
back three conversations as a game is playing out.

Speaker 11 (49:43):
Yeah, definitely.

Speaker 20 (49:45):
They're always asking questions what I'm saying. What they're saying,
they're telling me feedback, and I'm giving them a bit
of feedback too, so I always feel comfortable to talk
to them. There's a pretty thing.

Speaker 2 (49:54):
Yeah, there's some pretty stuff. Competition for the outside backspots
and the side even to get on the bench. Do
you feel like if you've given an opportunity you really
have to take it.

Speaker 11 (50:05):
Yeah.

Speaker 20 (50:05):
This season just definitely. Yeah, you know, she'd like to
be around this playing in our perform and he runs
healthy at the moment, So as soon as you get
the opportunity to play, you've got to take the hands.
And yeah, it's good for the team obviously, it's real healthy,
actually pushed heart of each each game.

Speaker 2 (50:23):
So it'd be pretty hard to drop you out to
scoring five tries on him, I imagine, But I guess
it's just it's just one part of it. You guys
are only your head by what twenty points to eighteen
at halftime? Why don't you think you could quite shake
them off in the first half.

Speaker 20 (50:40):
I think a little bit of discipline probably didn't help
getting them and are in the field and they were
just getting points from that. So we just had our
discipline in our own half, but probably just a little
bit of connection stuff as well wasn't really clicking until
that second half.

Speaker 2 (50:55):
And if we look back to last year after Round five,
last year the Crusaders were zero and five. Without wanting
to dwell on that at all, what other big differences
mac of this season?

Speaker 20 (51:07):
I think I just I think the culture has obviously
grind last year. We've taken a lot out out of
the season last year and you get to learn from that.
You gotta learn quick. With the super rug vs. Every
teams is a threat out. So you come up to
each game and I think, yeah, you reflect on what
happened last year. I think it's a big, big improvement

(51:28):
with the boys.

Speaker 2 (51:29):
Certainly, and beudy afternoon in christ Church, how much do
you enjoy playing with a bit of sun on your back?

Speaker 11 (51:35):
Oh it's beautiful?

Speaker 20 (51:37):
Any too hot? For christ until that point.

Speaker 2 (51:39):
Are you're from Nelson? May you be used to, wouldn't you?

Speaker 20 (51:42):
Yeah, you've been Christian's for a couple of months.

Speaker 2 (51:45):
You climatize and I mean, obviously that would have been nice.
But the new christ Church Stadium well and truly taking shape.
You drive down, you know, down the middle of town
and you see it there rising up. Now have you
thought about what it might be like to play in
that brand new venue next year?

Speaker 20 (52:02):
Yeah, definitely had thoughts about it. It would be pretty spitch
once it's opened to see it, and obviously a playing
it as well. So now I'm pretty excited for that
to open up, and I think it'd be good for
the community and enter the team as well.

Speaker 2 (52:16):
And what happens when you score five tries? Did you
have to shout last.

Speaker 20 (52:19):
Night going round there to shout? I think two boys
told me I was a bit greedy as well, so
said it be fine when I come in on Monday.
I don't know what they will be, but I'll be
playing something which.

Speaker 2 (52:34):
I'm just trying to think about, which try you could
be accused of being greedy? And maybe maybe the last one,
maybe the last one, I don't know.

Speaker 20 (52:41):
I think was Will was inside me on that when
I did the cover down the sideline, so he wasn't
too happy after he gave me that first one as well,
so he plat he won one back?

Speaker 2 (52:51):
Well did I? I think? Well, he got the last one,
didn't he? So you get to if you get to
eight tries and Will Jordan hasn't got one, he probably
would get a bit grumpy.

Speaker 11 (52:58):
Got image.

Speaker 2 (53:00):
Good to see him get one of the endo. He
made hard work at at one of the end though
didn't he was sort of crawling on his hands and
knees to get over.

Speaker 20 (53:07):
Yeah, we did have a laugh afterwards. Found look like
he found a bit tough to stay up find the
way to get there he does.

Speaker 2 (53:16):
It was most Unwill Jordan like, but he did get
his try a Mecca. Was terrific to watch last You know,
watch yesterday, you know the outside backs running with such
freedom and scoring tries. Mate, Well done, big big week
this week. As you as you look forward to the
blues of Eaton Park this coming Saturday, you'll know how
to get back on the tools on Monday.

Speaker 20 (53:34):
Yeah, definitely back to the new week. Was he bluest
bit of hate watching the game last monthing to get
to chase a pretty tight game, so they'll they'll be
ready to go.

Speaker 2 (53:44):
Congrats again, Mecca, thanks for taking the time for a
chat mate, No, thank you very much, thanks Macca. Macha
Springer there scorer or five tries yesterday. That's rough being
told he was greedy. I guess the fifth try, yeah,
perhaps he could have passed it.

Speaker 21 (53:59):
I don't know.

Speaker 2 (53:59):
Will Jordan gave him the first one, didn't he. If
you seen these tries, there's a line up out to
the left and Will Jordan probably could have gone in
himself at one more passkas macis Spring of the try,
he probably thought, well, I'll give the young killy chance.
It was his first game of the season. Two Mackispring
hasn't played up until yesterday. Five tries in one game.

(54:20):
Talk about seizing your opportunities. Ian Will Jordan right at
the end just getting a try was kind of ankle tapped,
got up, went again, crawled towards the line, reach out, scored,
He almost scored his try and installments really in slow motion.
So Crusaders fans, are you back? Are you back? I
look at the table, Chiefs are on top. They've played

(54:41):
five games eighteen points. We'll get to Chiefs Country in
the next little while. Actually, Crusader second on fourteen, same
number of points as the Reds and the Brumbies, so
three teams there on fourteen points and then it's back
to the Highlanders on Sorry warretas thirteen Highlanders ten are

(55:01):
those are the top six at the moment. So are
you back Crusaders fans? Are you willing to say that
last year was just a bad dream? Graham? Are you back.

Speaker 7 (55:15):
Well?

Speaker 22 (55:15):
I think I think we are because we're we're back
in the hunt. We've got three wins out of four. Yeah,
and we've got players back. You know, Macca was there
last year and played was one of the better ones.
Great interview by the way, but yeah, the personnel that
Barrett eastan blackad even though Eathan didn't play yesterday, he's
been playing the other games and you got well Jordan

(55:38):
Braden in all that back. I mean I was at
the last two home games against the Reds and against
yesterday against the Western Fourth. I mean, day rugby on
a nice day, Jason, I mean it's just perfect. I
mean your team's playing well. I mean the first half
was a bit rough, but that second half was just
it was you know, it was a real clinic.

Speaker 2 (56:01):
It looked awesome, It looked awesome on TV. Graham, I
have to say it was. He's just a beautiful day,
you know, ironically enough, you know from next year you'll
be under a roof, won't you. But but you know,
on a day like that, it just goes to show,
you know what what day rugby can be. And yeah,
it's just great to see them running so freely. Nine
tries all to the outside backs. None of this, none

(56:23):
of this forward scoring tries rubbish, Graham.

Speaker 22 (56:26):
The days of I mean, this isn't Jason Ryan. Remember
we were known for these, the line out drives. And
I mean Jason was an expert at he was like
a tank commander really but I mean they've still got
players that can do that, but they you know, the
game's changed a lot, and the referees is I think
we talked about it after round one. You know, there's
there's been a real sea change. And my personal highlight

(56:48):
was Will Jordan's tries to say, because see he is
just so good, I thought that I thought he you know, stopped,
but then as you say, it was like installments.

Speaker 2 (56:59):
I just think, you know, you think back to last
year and there were a lot of players who weren't there.
But he just makes such a massive different stuff. He
will Jordan. He wasn't there at all that season, was he? Graham?
Correct me if I'm wrong, But I don't think he
played a single game, Wasn't He was good? He was
good too, wasn't he? He's another one. He's well, he's
been so unlucky with injuries, says Now. I remember when
Brandon in Or first came onto the scene. You'll remember this.

(57:21):
They were talking about him as being a seven or
eighty test all black. You know that won't happen now.
But yeah, he's clearly still a very very handy footballer.

Speaker 22 (57:29):
Yeah, and I mean yeah, he's brought real pace to
that midfield, which we struggled a bit in that area
last year. And the Yeah, it's fantastic for him because
I mean training all the time and not playing. I mean,
you know he's back, you know, he's back on the
grass and put it in eighty minutes and I was
very very happy for him. He looked very happy after

(57:50):
the game, that's for sure, and so he should.

Speaker 2 (57:52):
Do you think you can go to Eden Park and
beat the Blues though, Graham.

Speaker 22 (57:56):
It'd be tough, but I think we can. Yeah. I
mean the Blues nearly toppled the Chiefs and that has
to be said. So yeah, there won't be any complacency
that you know, I assure you well, you'd know that
they're not going to just go a one. No, no,
I mean I do think we can though, yeah.

Speaker 2 (58:13):
Yeah, Well you look at the ordinarily, Graham. If you
up against a team that's one and four, you know,
and you you yourselves are three wins, one lost, You's okay,
we're going to be favorites. But yeah, you you know
as well as I do that a trip to Eden
Park is never easy for any rugby team, particularly when
it's the Crusaders. So Crusaders Blues. Yeah, looking forward to
that one already on Saturday night, Graham, good to chat
to your mate. I knew you were going to be

(58:34):
there yesterday. I would have been there yesterday, so good
to good to hear that you've enjoyed yourself on the
sunshine with all of those tries to the outside backs
as well. One twenty four News Talk sad B lines
are open to talk Super Rugby. On eight hundred and
eighty ten eighty. We'll get you to Chiefs Country in
the next little while. Actually, with Graham Minty Mead who
called the game last night, it was another cracker you

(58:56):
got to say, I mean super rugby. I know we
say it week after week, but again some tremendous games
Friday night. We talked about this yesterday. The Hurricanes just
there against the Highlanders in a titanic clash. The other
Derby New Zealand Derby thirty two thirty one, the Chiefs
over the Blues. I didn't watch the Reds Warritars game

(59:16):
last night. I wake up this morning and saw that
score and it surprised me because war Retars were, you know,
three from three. They were the only gun beatenside going
into the weekend. But we're well by the looks of
it anyway on the scoreboard, given a bit of a
dealing to by the Reds. So yeah, again upsets the
Fiji and Drewer couldn't get anything in Canberra, and yeah

(59:39):
that's at five games. So again a terrific weekend of
super rugby, with hopefully much more to come. We'll talk
some Chiefs in a moment. If you'd like to add
your two cents from any of the Super Rugby franchises.
Eight hundred and eighty ten eighty is our number nine
two nine two on text from Back in a Moment.

Speaker 1 (59:55):
The biggest things in sports are on Weekend Sports with
Jason Pain and GJ. Gunnomes, New Zealand's most trusted home
builder News Talks.

Speaker 2 (01:00:04):
They'd be news talks every one. Twenty eight. The table
topping Chiefs have hung on for a thirty two to
thirty one win over the Blues in Hamilton, making it
two from two over the defending Super Rugby champions.

Speaker 23 (01:00:17):
Curling it back, curling it back, passing off was up
the postman, missus, Oh, he did everything right and hits
the post and bounces back into the field to play
Watima has it.

Speaker 6 (01:00:29):
There's the whistle, there's the thing.

Speaker 23 (01:00:31):
Radham is going to do one thing with us into
this than that goes and it's going to be the
takes thirty two points, Blue thirty one points. What a
game of rugby here.

Speaker 2 (01:00:41):
In Hamilton, What a game of rugby? And d That
is the voice of Graham Minty Mead who calls Chiefs
games for us on gold Sport and iHeartRadio. Were you
willing that last conversion hit the Postminte were.

Speaker 24 (01:00:52):
You by that time? Piney? I had no idea what
was going to happen. Numb. It was one of those
games you just sat back in war and thought, what's
just gone on? It was nearly four minutes before the
first stoppage after the kickoff and it didn't stop. Intense
footy and wow, I want to win for the Chiefs.
But how good were the Blues too?

Speaker 2 (01:01:12):
They were? They were very good and it was like
on the table it was top the bottom pretty much.
But it certainly didn't look like that and it was
never going to be when the Chiefs play the Blues.
I mean they're defending champions. Do you think, you know,
having given up the overnight test and on the across
the eighty odd minutes, do you think the Chiefs deserve
to win?

Speaker 24 (01:01:34):
Well? I think that rugby was so intense. There are
lots of mistakes. There were lots of errors we got.
The Chiefs got a couple of lucky tries that McKenzie
won where the ball went behind him and both to
Ali and Joanne ran past him and he grabbed the
ball and dipped around and scored. That was a fortunate try.
It wasn't anything too flash, but some of the crossfield

(01:01:54):
kicking to the wingers there was some special rugby in
that Piney and I just thought I've never come away
from a game so probably naked it was. Gordy was
the same, David Fox. They said that it was just
incredible game of footy and whoever one I deserved it.

Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
Do you think the Blues have what it takes to
get out of this sort of slump that they are in.
I mean, they're defending champions after all, but you look
at the table played five, one, one, last four. Do
you think they're still a top six side?

Speaker 24 (01:02:22):
Well they should be, Let's just be honest. They lost
doing a FARSI and Caleb Clark just before kickoff last night,
and the Chiefs like Anton Lennart Brown and I think
that made a bit of difference to their prep. But man,
they've got some talent out there, young cam Christie. This
number six, the North Harbor Locke's playing on the flank.
I think he was dynamic last night for a twenty
year old. And they've got the gears that just needs

(01:02:43):
to click and I'm not sure what's causing it not
to click. But if we're going to get rugby like
that every week. I'm all for that.

Speaker 2 (01:02:51):
Look, yeah, I think, look they'll they'll be fine. I
really believe they'll be fine. And they've had a pretty
tough start of it, the Chiefs twice for a start.
But as I say, Crusaders next week. But just on
the Chiefs, Damie McKenzie obviously stands out and when he plays,
they look a different outfit. But who else caught your

(01:03:12):
eye in a Chief's jersey last night?

Speaker 24 (01:03:15):
Well you took of Damien McKenzie. I'm but worried about
the kicking that's going on, and see for Raby this time.
It seems to be affecting them all. The kicking's not
good from anyone. But I still look at Quincy Pie,
the guy was he was working around the rucks and
mauls at second five. He's reinvented himself since that bad
injury he's got. He's just aggressive and solid in that
second five. And probably you look down at and they

(01:03:37):
go Jerome Brown as in Anne McAllister from the Crusaders
and Jerome Brown II. If they are not the two
best buyers of the season, the Chiefs have picked up.
I go he they have really just slotted into this
the side and made the places their own.

Speaker 2 (01:03:51):
I think there was probably a bit of not concerned,
maybe mild concern that Wallace Atzi wasn't going to be
there for you this season, given what a huge impact
he had last season. But you're right, Manti, you know
you lose forwards. They've hardly skipped a beat ow they
even off the bench. When a guy like you know,
some a penny female comes off the bench and makes
a massive difference, the loose forward cohort would probably be

(01:04:13):
the envy I think of most of the other teams.

Speaker 24 (01:04:17):
Well, I think you're right. When Wallis a Cedi opted
out for the season with the injury, we thought, who's
going to replace this kid? Because he is he's a freak,
He's there's something absolutely special about him. And suddenly upsteps
Simon Parker. Luke Jacobson steps up. We've got Jerome Brown
come in, We've got Sammo penny Fee now and the
list just goes on and these guys are really playing well.

(01:04:37):
And Xavier Row spoke to me yesterday morning. He said
it's just he said, it's lovely to have the protection
he's got from the forwards as a halfback and you
don't hear that very often, so they have stepped up.
I think that's the bones of it. And Tupu Vai
he's been part captain this year. He's gone another leg
mans he's strong and playing good rugby. He's becoming to
Brady Rettalick. He's now starting to get that maturity and

(01:04:59):
he's just getting better and better.

Speaker 2 (01:05:00):
How do you think these Chiefs guys are handling it
with Clayton McMillan, clearly, you know, using players and different roles.
You talked about summer Penny Feenwe, Xaviero started Courtiz Latimer
probably has a very good case to start rugby matches
given the fact that he's an All Black and Xavier
Roh is not. I look at Summersuni Talkio he's come
back and but he's starting off the bench. How do

(01:05:21):
you think these players are dealing with the fact that
Clayton McMillan doesn't mind mixing and matching his starting fifteen
with his reserves.

Speaker 24 (01:05:28):
Well, we talked to him. Clayton's got a plan and
he's got a plan that involves the whole name squad
and they've got specific jobs and he's finding at the moment,
Ratham are and deep Female and Tuck Ajo coming off
the bench or a bit like a small version of
the South African bomb Squad, and they're coming in and
making a different type of play which is enabling enabling

(01:05:48):
the Chiefs to do some different things. And we'll see
Radamill probably start next week. We'll see sammer Penny get
their start shortly. But they've got a really solid player
Roger Randall, Clayton McMillan, David Hill. They've got a super
plan for the year of how they want to inject
their players into games against different opposition. It's quite cool.

Speaker 2 (01:06:06):
I was going to say that next week they he
might look at resting a couple of guys against Mona Pacifica,
but you probably can't do that now given the way
Morea Pacifica played against the Hurricanes. What was that last weekends?
And there is the buy to follow. So do you
get the feeling that Clayton will just just go with
the big guns again against Mona Pacifica on Friday night?

Speaker 24 (01:06:26):
I think so. I did the game pre season up
at pul k Winer Pacifica and the Chiefs and that
minor Pacific side is a hell of a good side,
lots of talent. I don't think Clayton will rest too many.
He might have some bay injury alone. But they're about
winning a competition and I think if you start playing
the resting game and stretching it back down too much,
it can come round and bite you in the back

(01:06:47):
side pretty quickly.

Speaker 2 (01:06:48):
All right, Just to finish Mintea, the Chiefs have been
you know well, I think they were the best side
two years ago. I think they were close to the
best side. Last year. They made the Grand Final both times,
beaten both times. Is this going to be third time lucky?
As a farewell gift to Clayton McMillan, dance.

Speaker 24 (01:07:06):
Down on the ground that incriminate, But I'm certainly hoping. So,
I am most certainly hoping so, Biney.

Speaker 2 (01:07:15):
And actually, just before you go, do you have a
prediction for the for the Carabeur Cup, the League Cup
final tomorrow morning between a side that I know you follow,
Newcastle United and aside that I follow Liverpool. And again,
you don't have to answer if you think it's going
to incriminate.

Speaker 24 (01:07:30):
You turn two wonderful magpies. That's our year. We're having
a cup. Your follows have got too much going on
in your place at the moment. We need to win
and you should bring England and say just let them
win one, just to make them feel better.

Speaker 2 (01:07:43):
I'm not sure I've got the power, Graham, but I'll
be watching as I know all the power. A great
call again last night, Minty. Thanks thanks for chatting to us.

Speaker 7 (01:07:52):
Mate.

Speaker 2 (01:07:52):
We'll catch up again soon.

Speaker 24 (01:07:54):
Yeah, have a safe week party and Cheersay for the.

Speaker 2 (01:07:56):
Call for the best, Graham me Minty to everybody our
caller for Chiefs games, and again on the mic last
night with Steve Gordon former All Black alongside. They do
a great job for us. Next for the Chiefs. More
on a Pacifica on Friday night that starts round six.
More on a Pacifica coming off the buye this weekend
and I'm sure still high on confidence after their went
over the Hurricanes last weekend. Looking ahead to the other

(01:08:19):
games in round six of Super Rugby. So I see
a Friday night mighta Pacific Chiefs Saturday, the Highlanders welcome
the Reds to Dunedin. Four thirty five Blues Crusaders. What
a contest that is said to be five past seven
Eden Park Saturday, night than the Warra Tares against the
Brumbies in Sydney and on Sunday night a rare Sunday night.

(01:08:40):
Well it'll week in the afternoon in Western Australia the
Force against the Fijian Drewer in Perth. Five past seven
on Sunday night is scheduled kickoff time for that one
that's next Sunday. So a week tonight on text from
Dave and Queenstown, Jason against me to start because I
was over super Ragby. But how good is it to
have more competitive games every week? I think the rule

(01:09:00):
changes to speed things up is obviously helping. It's a
much better watch. It's looking like the Blues are having
the issue with injuries the Crusaders had last season, so
as a Crusaders fan, I'm loving that. I'm pretty confident
that the Crusaders may need to make some room in
their trophy cabinet for another one. Luckily, the Blues probably
have plenty of room in their cabinet anyway to fit
in their big wooden spoon cheapus Dave, shots fired from Queenstown,

(01:09:25):
where I know you are tupor vai for all Blacks.
Number seven is this one? He's got all the ball skills,
power and pace and finally has the blood and guts
to smash them. Bro a two meter seven in Tupor Vai. Lookout,
I think he is going to play in the loose forwards.
It'll be at six, wouldn't it. I don't know. Look

(01:09:46):
I wouldn't. It wouldn't be a huge shock to see
Tupor Vai in the loose forward. I just think it
would be more likely at six than at seven. But
I appreciate the text. With updated Live Sport. In terms
of the White Ferns, they have beaten Sri Lanka by
seven wickets in the second of their T twenty Internationals.
Looking at plunket chill cricket, there's a really intriguing game

(01:10:09):
going on in a lungey order. The Wellington Firebirds scored
three hundred and fifty batting first, then bowld Canterbury out
for sixty eight. They didn't enforce the follow on. They
batted again and were all out for two hundred and twenty,
so that left Canterbury five hundred and three to win.
With plenty of time five hundred and three, they are

(01:10:32):
three hundred and eighty eight for five at the moment,
so they're on track and Henry Nichols are still out
there unbeaten on one hundred and twenty nine. Chad Bows
has already scored one hundred. He was out for one
hundred and fourteen or eighty five balls yesterday, so clearly
not messing around. Comma Cooncu made eighty nine but Canterbury

(01:10:55):
three eighty eight for five chasing five hundred and three,
so the only nine of one hundred and fifteen runs.
They've got plenty of overs, still sixty overs left, so
that is a very intriguing game playing out in the
lungey order. At Eton Parks out of Oval, Auckland in
their second innings are two hundred and thirty six for six,
so they may three twenty nine Northern four point fifty five,

(01:11:18):
Auckland two thirty six for six, so that one's headed
for a draw. And in Alexandra Otago three hundred and
ninety for seven declared and two thirty four for nine declared.
Central Stags three hundred for six and seventy six for three,
so they need another two hundred and forty nine runs
and Otaga need another seven wickets to win that one.

(01:11:40):
In Alexandra twenty to two. Let's take a break when
we come back our Sunday afternoon staple James mcconey joining
us on weekend sport.

Speaker 1 (01:11:49):
Don't get caught off Signed call eight hundred and eighty
ten eighty weekends for us with Jason Pyin and GJ. Gunnholmes,
New Zealand's most trusted home Builder News talgs.

Speaker 2 (01:11:58):
NB News Talks. There be seventeen away from two Sunday afternoons.
We get the pleasure of the company of James mccony.
Crowd goes wild, alternative comment, recollective, various other media platforms
and other things too that you know don't need to
be discussed here. Hello James, Hi, how.

Speaker 11 (01:12:13):
Are you pony? Yeah, good to be here. Plenty of platforms, mate,
it's what you need, absolutely way reinforced ones.

Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
Well I always say they can't all fire you at once.
So if you if you have plenty of plenty of
income streams. I think it's good.

Speaker 7 (01:12:29):
Hi.

Speaker 2 (01:12:29):
The Warriors are back.

Speaker 11 (01:12:32):
Oh our back baby, and I gave them no chance
of beating manly. But this is the whole thing with
those teams that seems stacked. But then you look at
manly and there's you know, Tom Javoievitch has always been
in jury prone. Daily Cherry Evans, I think might be
the oldest player in the NRL. You know, sometimes it's
about being healthy and and methodical, and I thought exactly

(01:12:54):
that's what the Warriors were on on Friday night. They
didn't you know, they didn't get scared, they didn't freak
out after that early manly try. It just bit by
bit they put together nice moves and I thought, for
webe the carriage. Andrew Webster, he must have been so
stoked because he's he's got a plan and they absolutely

(01:13:17):
stuck to it. And we're a team, let's be honest,
that is lacking the big stars. So on paper, we
should not have won that game.

Speaker 2 (01:13:24):
I must say, you said they didn't freak out after
conceding the first try. I must say I was a
little bit concerned after they considered that first try. I
wondered what was going to get, what was going to happen.
I actually feared for us a little bit.

Speaker 11 (01:13:36):
Yeah, well, that's the thing I think when you look
at the Warriors team, even I still don't believe Roger
Tuvarsi Sheik should play on the wing. But look, we've
got to trust him. We'll be trust in the process
because you know what's what happened there is Ali lad
Taua had a good game. We saw even our has

(01:13:57):
started to combine really nicely. We needed to see that
because to me, the X factor comes from someone like
Letter Halasima off the bench and harped on about him
for a while. But he's a guy who could be
a superstar. How we manage him is important. But also
we can't let him go like Ellie Katora to the storm,
so the process of getting him to that next level

(01:14:21):
is vital. But I mean, I'm always a believer that
someone like Rogers Tvasis she should be a bit like
the way Larry Daley moved closer to the ball as
his career went on, and should almost be a standoff
by now. But hey, as long as we winning games
have come out on the wing, let's just keep it
that way.

Speaker 2 (01:14:38):
Absolutely.

Speaker 9 (01:14:38):
Now.

Speaker 2 (01:14:39):
The rooster is the next they beat the Panthers, they
beat Penrith James.

Speaker 11 (01:14:44):
I know. And the thing is, I was looking at
this as a player again. Alfahu White, who played for
Chlston Boyce HI for fifteen rugby and just you know,
sometimes you just go where's that guy? From him and
you go, I remember seeing him somewhere and yeah, just
down the road here from my house in west Auckland.
So seeing this is the thing. There's a lot of

(01:15:05):
players who are who were starting to mature and turn
into really solid pros, and watching them, I guess boss
the Pendris side around. There was a bit of a
comeback here and it came down to the last seconds,
but really they look solid after a terrible start. So
this is what you want from the competition, really, is

(01:15:28):
that anybody can get anybody to Super rugby is doing
that for sure, and I mean I think Super rugby
has probably been even more entertaining. But the NRL's getting
into its work, isn't it, And.

Speaker 2 (01:15:40):
Dat it is. Indeed it is. Well it's got to rugby.
Nice segue, because the Chiefs are top, but from the
second place Crusaders down to the bottom place more Ona Pacifica.
There's only eight points between those ten teams. And it's
exactly what you just said. Anyone can beat anybody true
jeopardy and some cracking games of rugby.

Speaker 11 (01:16:01):
Yeah, I mean there's no natural alpha, you know, That's
what I quite like about it. So it is like
the end of that scene in Jurassic World where they
had that sort of like the one that the dinosaur
cooked up in the lab versus t Rex. I don't
know if I'm going too far from your wheelhouse of
movies here, Pony, but we saw that with the Blues
and the Chiefs last night. I know Minty on your

(01:16:23):
show was, oh, by the way, have you seen Jurassic World?

Speaker 2 (01:16:26):
I know I haven't, but I feel like I have
now that you've explained the ending.

Speaker 11 (01:16:30):
Yes, yes, yeah, great battle between those two. But I
mean Minty is the Chiefs man, and God bless him,
but he's definitely the glass artful Chiefs version. I'm the
glass half empty guy at the moment, because you know,
it was just a conversion shaving upright the cost that cost.
The Blues are really solid victory against the odds last night,

(01:16:51):
and yeah, the Chiefs have got a few things they
need to go away and work on. I think it's
good to see two strong hookers out there, with Brodie
mccollis coming into the fray and then the one to
punch with him and SUMMERSONI Tokiyaho but really I think
they got lucky. And when I look at Zavi Tairly
and then Cam Christie pretty much two guys on debut

(01:17:16):
looking so good for the Blues. They are the future.
And Tarey has been targeted quite a bit under twenty
scepta and I think, and you know he's been everyone
talks about them. But Cam Christie out of Audiowa College.
I mean, I thought there were only rest homes in Audioway,
but yet there is a college there and senior kids
to just normal state schools. Because it doesn't they can

(01:17:37):
still rise to the top.

Speaker 2 (01:17:38):
Pony, You're so right about the kick, because that slightly
to the left. Then we're having a different conversation as
we are of Sam Gilbert's drop goal at the end
of the game on Friday night is slightly more to
the right. You know, there are very small margins between
defeat and victory and super agular this year, which again

(01:18:00):
is what we're after. But yeah, it's funny how small
margins can have such huge, huge impacts.

Speaker 11 (01:18:06):
Thing. On the end of the Highlanders game, there was
a high tackle by Peter among the Jensen and I
was thinking, okay, did the refs miss that? And they said,
it's not yellow cart threshold, but that's still really a
high tackle that I think a TMO should rule on,
and there seems to be a few of those discrepancies.
Rugby is absolutely riddled with it at the moment because
there was a kind of potential headbut by this French

(01:18:28):
hook in Malvaca this morning in the Six Nations and
that was I thought it was going to be upgraded
to red and stayed yellow. So who knows what the
hell's going on up the upstairs, because I mean, are
they like me? They just like triple screening and looking
on Instagram while they're watching the game because potentially they
might be Yeah, so.

Speaker 2 (01:18:45):
They don't have their full focus where they should have
in other words, yeah on.

Speaker 11 (01:18:50):
The twisties like myself or whatever, you know, like chips
and dirt and so TMO is just focus people. We
need to actually need you to contribute.

Speaker 2 (01:18:59):
Do you ever when you're watching Sky do you ever
pause it and then you know, to do whatever and
then and then started again and then forget that you're
actually about a couple of minutes behind even when you
go through halftime all the time.

Speaker 11 (01:19:11):
And then they get an annoying text from the Crogo's Wild
group chat and I just go, okay, right, that's some
I'm miles behind here. And even the Tribat, which is
a really good app for people out there if you
love your sport, tried as a New Zealand act. That's
got all your favorite sporting sporting teams. But they'll give
me an a lit and I'll find out. Oh okay,
you know King, You see you've scored, and it's like

(01:19:32):
I'm watching the game and it's nowhere ere.

Speaker 2 (01:19:35):
You're still watching the You're still watching the pre game,
still watching the pre game. Hey, Liam Lawson's going to
going to take to the track at Albert Park this afternoon.
In about three hours or so, he'll be out there.
It's going to rain. What what are you expecting from
Liam Lawson this afternoon.

Speaker 11 (01:19:54):
Well, apparently he's good in the wet I've heard, so
that's that's great. I mean he grew up and book Koey.
Everyone loves the Book of Kelley Bogan, whether it's the
late great Possum Born, you know, everybody's every great driver
has really cut their teeth there. But he is actually
from there, from humble beginnings, which is really hard to do.
In Formula one. You know, he does look like a

(01:20:16):
rich kid with his blonde here who looks like Draco
Malfoy out of Harry Potter? Do you know that reference? Bony?

Speaker 2 (01:20:21):
No, But again I'm learning all the time.

Speaker 11 (01:20:23):
Okay, but this is the thing. His car sounds like
my car. It's got major problems. It barely passes the
war On of Fitness. I've had the huge issues. When
I got war On the Fitness the other day for
my car, it was all my second happiest day after
my daughter's birth, you know, like it was that big
of a deal. This car is so crap. But seeing

(01:20:47):
him get the probably the worst, the lesser mechanics, the
lesser engineers, and him having engine problems while the staff
and it's just flying. It's just typical, isn't it really?
Of course, but hopefully you can overcome that and get
a warrant.

Speaker 2 (01:21:02):
It's hope. So let's have you passed it, Like put
a new sticker on his screen. I was not even
a sticker anymore. Is that you're sort of slotted into
its little into a little case, now, don't you. You
don't stick it on the screen anymore.

Speaker 11 (01:21:12):
Oh no, there's still a sticker. There's still a ceremony
and it lasts for a year. Pony, it's the greatest
thing feeling of relief you'll ever feel in your life.
Go get one.

Speaker 2 (01:21:21):
I'll go and get one when when the need arises.
Thank you for joining us. Look forward to many more
niche references from you next Sunday. And as you know, yes,

Ireland's colors point five.

card after an even part third round of the Players
Championship at TPC Sawgrass, widely known of course, as the
fifth Major. He is ten shots off the lead held
by American JJ Spawn, who is twelve under the cart.

(01:27:43):
In two thousand and two, Kiwee Craig Perks produced one
of golf's most memorable triumphs when he won this very event,
and one of the more remarkable finishes to a golf tournament.
He was a stroke behind Stephen Ames when he chipped
in for eagle at the par five sixteenth. Then on
the famous island degreen at seventeen he sunk a twenty

(01:28:05):
eight foot birdie park and on eighteen he took three shots,
still wasn't on the green. But then this, well that's beautiful,
and that is do you put away?

Speaker 7 (01:28:18):
Why not? Me?

Speaker 18 (01:28:20):
As the three greatest pullouts the Major Championship type, the atmosphere.

Speaker 2 (01:28:25):
I've ever seen, pitches it in on sixteenth for eagle,
a snake over the hill at seventeen.

Speaker 6 (01:28:32):
Another pick in at a camp.

Speaker 18 (01:28:35):
Not only have you seen one of the most shocking
conclusions in golf history, especially at this championship, you've seen
the biggest surprise.

Speaker 11 (01:28:44):
Winner of this championship in its history.

Speaker 2 (01:28:48):
Craig Perks incredible one putt on the last three holes.
Craig Perks is now a TV golf analyst and has
been covering the Plass Championship. He joins us now from Florida. Kraig,
I can't believe it's been twenty three years. I remember
being glued to it back in March of two thousand
and two. What stands out most vividly when you think

(01:29:09):
back to that day, Well.

Speaker 7 (01:29:11):
Good afternoon. Yeah, many strong memories, no question about it.
And some of the commentary from Johnny Miller. You know,
the three greatest wholeouts and major championship history is a
certainly a compliment. I know when I still on the
eighteenth tee with a two shot lead and took out driver.

(01:29:32):
I had been living in Louisiana for about twenty years
at that time, and he said I must have left
my brain and the bayou. So a lot of great comments,
a lot of great memories. You know when I showed
up there for my very first Players Championship in two
thousand and two, I was just honored to be in
the field, really just privileged to be a PGA two

(01:29:53):
player coming from Palmerston, North, New Zealand, and lo and behold,
I walked away with a crystal and yeah, so many
incredibly indelible memories, I guess throughout the years, but it
it is. I've chatted with a few people this week
and it seems like everyone remembers me for one week
of the year, and a lot of it. Most of

(01:30:16):
them have said, I can't believe it's been twenty three years.

Speaker 2 (01:30:19):
Yeah, well I certainly couldn't. I was watching the footage
back this morning in preparation for chatting to r Kragan
and the emotion when you won you almost looked overcome
by it? Or what was it like when you chipped
in on eighteen and you'd won.

Speaker 7 (01:30:34):
I was overwhelmed, you know. I think at the time
I really didn't know what I'd accomplished. First, I didn't
know the magnitude of the event and the reason I
state that I was actually in the second to last
group the following year with a wonderful chance to win.
I was one back going into the final day, and
no one up to that point had ever won back

(01:30:56):
to back Players Championship and here I was, the unheralded
Kiwi with a chance to do it. But then go
back to two and after I chipped in, you know,
I think just a flood of emotions. I'd you know,
I'd come from New Zealand, gone through qualifying school ten
different times.

Speaker 11 (01:31:14):
I had.

Speaker 7 (01:31:16):
Just had been you know, I was a journeyman. It
was a grind. I got to the point at one
point in nineteen ninety nine when I'd run out of
money and I was pleading to some of my sponsors
just give me one more chance. I really think I'm
good enough to do it. And lo and behold. I
got onto the PGA too the next year, and you know,
and two years later I won the Players. But I

(01:31:38):
think more than anything, it was just, you know, it
was an appreciation for those that helped me along the way,
the journey that I'd made from New Zealand, and you know,
just to win an event of that magnitude in the
exhilarating fashion that I did it, it was it was
it was pretty cool to be a.

Speaker 2 (01:31:59):
Part of that, Can we just go through the last
three holes on sixteen? Part five? An eagle walk us
through sixteen.

Speaker 7 (01:32:08):
Well, it was interesting because I had driven it all
over the the entire dad. I'd only hit four fairways,
and I've missed a couple of very short parts, one
at twelve and one at fifteen, and I was still
on the sixteenth tee and I still wasn't even contemplating winning.
I'd played well up to that point. I was really

(01:32:30):
in a situation in my career, was just trying to
keep my PGA to a card, and I thought, man
if I could just have a good finish this week,
I could lock up my card for the rest of
the year. And exhale, I had a wonderful drive down sixteen,
the best of the week, and it just set things
in motion middle of the fairway with a foe iron
from over two hundred yards and I was always a

(01:32:52):
hooker of the golf ball or a hard drawer of
the golf ball, and the pin was over there on
the right, and I just told myself to hit it solid,
and I was very fortunate there was a ribbon rough
that blanketed the edge of the green before it went
in the water not there anymore. And if it wasn't there,
my border forward gone on the water, but it stayed
up and I chipped it in and then sort of

(01:33:17):
to jump ahead here. The walk to seventeen was just amazing.
I was the heart rate was elevated. I was having
trouble breathing. I was having trouble getting slyron spitting, but
it was it was you know, Pete Iron Dean Beaman
created that stadium atmosphere, that colisseum, and it was electric.

(01:33:38):
And I still wasn't thinking about winning. I was just
really trying to enjoy the atmosphere and maybe that was beneficial.

Speaker 2 (01:33:46):
Well, seventeen the famous Island green. How intimidating a tea
shot is that?

Speaker 7 (01:33:55):
Well, I think you've seen the triumphs and the disasters there.

Speaker 24 (01:34:00):
I was.

Speaker 7 (01:34:01):
I felt lucky, you know, I was really overwhelmed getting
to the tea. It's as nervous as I've ever been.
And knowing the history onics at that hole, and really
there's there's no margin of era. You have to hit
it on the green or you're going to look like
a full I just stood up on the green. I

(01:34:23):
felt very calm. I had a wonderful yardage, and I
didn't even really look at the flag. There was a
huge NBC plaqueard on a TV tower well behind the green,
and I said, I'm just going to aim at the end,
and that was really all I focused on. I hit
it solid. When I looked up, seeing it pretty much
going at that end of the NBC, I was relieved.

(01:34:44):
And then obviously the seat land in the middle of
the green, knowing all the disasters that occurred there in
previous years, I was more than pleased. I can tell
you that, all right.

Speaker 2 (01:34:56):
So then eighteen what happened on eighteen?

Speaker 7 (01:34:59):
Yeah, well, so this was my first Players Championship and
I played pray this round Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and I'd
hit driver there every single day. And again, I'm a
Keiwi and I have no idea. I have no idea
how to win golf tournament. So I had you know,
I played on the I'd won a lot in mini

(01:35:19):
tours and a little bit in college, and but you know,
I wasn't proficient at it. So I didn't stand on
that tea going okay, I got to protect this two
shot lead. I'm really thinking more Okay, I just hit
a good t shot and then hit it in the
grain and make a power not not the culmination of
the whole week, and where I positioned myself. You know, legitimately,
great champions would have probably hit a four or five

(01:35:41):
on down to the right and hit an eight iron
short of the green and knocked it on and made
a five and one by one and walked off and
everyone would have pat padded to you on the back
and said well done. I just I was still trying
to play golf like I had through my career in
New Zealand and then through college and the Mini Tours
and the and the Nike too, and so on and

(01:36:02):
so forth, and so I just thought, I'm going to
hit this drive and I'm gonna take get down the right.
It sets up perfectly. I had a draw and lo
and beholder. You know, coming down on the down swing,
you don't want to hook it in the water, so
you block it to the right. And then I get
over there and I'm still trying to make it four,
not thinking okay, I can just make it five and
I can still win. And then I pitched. I was

(01:36:25):
able to pitch it out, which I think was a
pretty smart play. And then I hit this wonderful aid
iron from one hundred and sixty yards and thinking it's
perfect in the middle of the green that goes over
the green. My first thought was, Jean Vandervelt, I'm going
to make it double or a triple or a quadruple,
and I'm gonna lose this, and I'm gonna look like
the biggest moron in the entire world. And I can't
believe I've just done this. I've at it over the

(01:36:46):
green in three and now I really do have to
get it up and down. And I walked back there,
and you know, again, there was this sense of calm.
This wasn't the most difficult thing I've ever done in
my life to try and keep my competitive career alive.
At spots along the journey was more difficult because there
might not have been a tomorrow here. If I didn't

(01:37:08):
get this up and down and I last in the playoff,
it would still be my best ever finished and I
might have made, you know, seven hundred and fifty thousand,
and I would have kept my card and I was
on my way and all this sort of stuff. But
when I walked down there, the line was really really good.
There was a slight little puff of breeze back in

(01:37:29):
my face, and I said, I've hit this. All I
did was work on my short game. I love spending
time just tucked away somewhere working on my short gam
And I said, you've done this a thousand times, not
thinking I'm go going to make this, but just get
this ball up and down. And as soon as I
hit it, I said, I've done it. Because I didn't
expect it to go in, but I knew it wasn't

(01:37:50):
going to be more than a couple of feet past,
and lo and behold it dropped in. And then obviously pandemonium.

Speaker 12 (01:37:55):
Brilliant.

Speaker 2 (01:37:56):
So good gee, what a great description, getting goosebumps even
listening to you talk about it. Defending champion Tiger Woods
finished seven shots behind you in a tie for fourteenth,
but then he handed over the try he and famously said,
you're unbelievable. How cool the moment was that?

Speaker 7 (01:38:10):
Well, more famously, you know, after you finished the round,
you've got to walk through the grandstand and go to
the scorer's tent and validate it all and make sure
it's so for sure. And my wife was Maureen. She
was with me, uh, and so were they said, some
of the red coats there, Brian joined the tournament director.

(01:38:31):
He escorted me back, he said, look, the the commissioner
will be on a little platform behind the green, and
you're there's a trophy presentation with listen. I had no
idea what what had just occurred. I had no idea
how to walk and be present in a prize ceremony
or anything like this. I had. I'm just I'm complete

(01:38:53):
rookie and all this, you know, sort of theatrics and
what was going on. And then so we Marian and
I my wife walked through the the grand stand and
I sort of peeked to my right and I looked
over and I said what. I'm not going to use
the explicator, but I said what? And then you know,
what is Tiger Woods doing here? And then I'm like, okay,

(01:39:13):
So where he's the defending championese Hold standing there with
the crystal. Tim Vinchon's there. So we walk up under
the podium and Tiger looks me in. I'd play with
Tiger two weeks previous at Drau the event down there
in Florida, in the final round and I paid well.
I'd finished fifth and Tiger finished second and so you know,
and Stevie Williams on the bag obviously, so there's a

(01:39:35):
connection there. And so we walk up and Tiger looks
at me and laughs and shakes his hand, and then
Maureen's sitting right next to me, and I'm going to
swear on the air. I hope you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:39:43):
Don't go on.

Speaker 7 (01:39:44):
Go on, so it's not that bad. But so I
walk up there, shake Tiger's hand. He goes, you know,
you're unbelievable whatever, and then he sort of moves over,
slides over and looks down to Maureen and puts his
hand out and he goes, nice to meet you on
Tiger Woods. And Marian looks up and goes, yeah, no shit,
So you know it was that was sort of and

(01:40:06):
may we laugh about that? Yeah, of course we know
your Tiger Woods. You don't really have to introduce stuff.

Speaker 11 (01:40:12):
So that was funny.

Speaker 7 (01:40:14):
And then you know all the other stuff that I've
sat there for two and a half hours going to
you know, we had the the ceremony on the back
of the green, and then you have to talk to
Mike Triko from NBC, and then you have to go
into the media center, and then you have to go
thank all the volunteers, and then you go into the
locker room and thank the all the people that have

(01:40:35):
helped you for the week. And then you go to
a little whatever it may be with all of the
Red coats who are the ones that sort of put
on the show, and then and I am my brain,
my mind is just I'm like, I'm really hungry. Actually
I'd like to get out of here and go home,
because that's normally what I did. It was actually happened

(01:40:55):
on a Friday, not I've just missed the cart and
go home and go to the next event. But I'm like,
why the hell do I have to do all this
stuff for the next three or four hours? Again I
had I couldn't comprehend the magnitude of this event. And
you know what, I want to talk to the people
in the locker room that and the guys that helped
shine our shoes and prepare, you know, have things ready

(01:41:15):
for us. And then there was a there was a
special champions locker room, Champion Zone. We walked in there
and lit a little ceremony, so it was you know,
literally I think that when I chipped in at eighteen,
it was six thirty local and I didn't leave the
golf course till ten o'clock, and I'm like, what just occurred?
And Maury and I are sitting there just looking at

(01:41:38):
each other, bewildered at what we accomplished, and we had
no idea how our lives were about to change.

Speaker 2 (01:41:45):
How do you feel when you go back there?

Speaker 7 (01:41:46):
Now that's a loaded question, it's really it's really interesting.
Like you said, it's twenty three years I played, you know,
so it was a five year exemption. So the next

(01:42:06):
three years that I played the next five years as
poorly as you could ever imagine, completely lost my way.
I was in the wilderness. So I left, I quit
plan and left the tour at the end of two
thousand and seven, And fortunate enough to I still loved
the game, and I really appreciated what the game had

(01:42:27):
allowed us and the blessings that I went and played
Open Championships with Nick Foudert, Miarfield Up and Sevi Balistereos
walked with me for nine holes that trooon after I'd
helped them in the gym the day before. But so
I would be all of these incredible experiences that were

(01:42:51):
just you could they were sort of parts of dreams
that you could never imagine happened. So then I got
into television in two thousand and eight, and then I
went back to the players doing television, and I've been
doing it every year since twenty ten. So really my
experience in my lifetime of memories started in two So again,

(01:43:15):
literally I've been part of the fabric of this event
for nearly twenty five years, a quarter of a century.
I was so, yeah, I was so I was such
an unheralded winner, and I'm sort of the outlier in
the in the wrong direction if you look at the
role the role call of champions here, you know, if

(01:43:37):
you think Jack Nicholas is one in Treveno and Floyd
and Norman Price and Elkington and the great, my name
doesn't belong there. And I think sometimes when I go back,
I'm so thankful and appreciative and all that, but sometimes
I just don't feel like I should be part of
the fiber and the fabric of the event because my

(01:44:00):
name sort of you'll see graphics throughout tomorrow, as you know,
maybe even Bud Cawley or Alex Smally, they'll say that
the guy with the I don't want to say worse.
But let's say the lowest world ranking to win the
Players champ was me at two thousand, At two hundred
and third in the world. You know, the greats of

(01:44:22):
this game, the best of the best, have won this event.
So I'm sort of the sore thumb there, and not
in a negative way, but to be one hundred percent honest,
I'd rather watch this from Afar. I've had my time here.
I'm so thankful that I'm part of the event, but

(01:44:43):
I think at some point it's it's time to, you know,
and I'm so thankful to be part of television, but
I think that nowadays. I walked around and drove around
here preparing for this week for television, and it's I
don't really know. It's interesting. I'm trying to come up
with the correct words to describe it, but I just

(01:45:08):
it'd be nice to just step away and just watch
from Afar and be thankful for what I did accomplish
twenty three years ago.

Speaker 2 (01:45:15):
Well, I can tell you from the list and feedback
we're getting, Craig, that you absolutely belong on that leaderboard.
I know what you're saying. I know you know that
on that board of champions, I know exactly what you're saying,
and you've articularated yourself beautifully, but yeah, I don't think
you'll get too many people agreeing with that particular part
of it. Craig, mate, it's been such a wonderful wander
down memory lane with you. Thank you for being so

(01:45:36):
generous with your time, and you know we'll always have
two thousand and two and I know a whole legion
of golf fans still look back particularly fondly on that
on that day in March of two thousand and two.
Thanks for reliving up with us.

Speaker 7 (01:45:50):
Yeah, thanks again. It's good to be you know, you
think of Subab, you know, winning an Open championship and
Cambo winning a US Open, so you know, Frank Nobolo
accomplished so much and obviously Grant Wait as well. But
just to be part of the Kiwi legion that has
had some success on the PGA two, I think that's
what I'm most proud of. But listen, thanks thanks for

(01:46:10):
letting me join you guys and wander down memory lane
a little bit.

Speaker 2 (01:46:14):
All the best to you, Craig, Thanks again.

Speaker 6 (01:46:15):
Craig Perks, thank you, Thank you.

What a What an honor to listen to Craig Perks.
Reminis about two thousand and two Pakistana nine for three
batting first against New Zealand at Agloval acceususally better than
they were. They were actually three down for one run,
So this is quite a good partnership. By comparison, Kyle
Jamison's got two for two. Jacob Duffy has the other wicket.
Pakistan nine for three after four overs batting first against

get straight into.

Speaker 2 (01:48:05):
Today that mate, Look, you're sounding more like me trying
to get things going.

Speaker 13 (01:48:10):
I love it.

Speaker 2 (01:48:11):
Let's start okay with the NBA around what fifteen sixteen
games to go in the regular season before the playoffs.
Who's standing out in each of the Western and Eastern conferences?

Speaker 13 (01:48:23):
Yes?

Speaker 21 (01:48:23):
So in the association. In the East, the Cleveland Cavaliers
are dominating. Have the best record on the NBA. They're
fifty six and ten and are on a sixteen game
win stream. Second behind them are the defending champion Boston
Celtic for the forty eight and nineteen record. Now, over
in the West, the ok oc sorry Oklahoma City Thunder

(01:48:45):
have a fifty four and twelve records, so they're about
treen wins better than the second place Denver NUGA two
on forty three and thirty four. So, although the Cavaliers
and Thunder will most likely finish top seeds of their
conferences with home court advalanced throughout the postseason, there are
a lot of lingering doubts whether they can win it
or due to their lack of playoff experience. The huge

(01:49:05):
difference between the regular postseason, as they'll both soon find out.

Speaker 2 (01:49:09):
Which is the stronger conference overall? Leon If you look
at the you know the overall strength of the East
and the West, which is more competitive, which is stronger.

Speaker 21 (01:49:20):
Yeah, you'd have to say that. Yeah, the West is
probably more top heavy than the East, so they've got
probably more content. It's going to be a real battle
between those top teams to get through to the conference final.
But yeah, if you look at the Eastern Conference, Boston
and Clear ran a differently blight years ahead of all
the other teams. So it's it's pretty likely that those

(01:49:42):
two are going to meet in the conference finals.

Speaker 2 (01:49:44):
All right, We'll look forward to seeing what plays out there.
Want to add off the court, there's always some storylines
happening off the court and all the sport we talk,
what about basketball? What are the big off court stories
at the moment?

Speaker 21 (01:49:54):
Yeah, So in the MVP rate, okay, see point guard
Shy Gilder Alexander the Clear odds on favorite winner's first
major award for MVP despite three time winner Nikolay Yokochov
Nuggets putting up historical numbers. So rounding out the top five,
we've got Giannath and its Compo of the Milwaukee Bucks,
Jetson Tatum of the Celtics, and Karl Anthony Towns of

(01:50:16):
the New York. So there's been a lot of debate
around that that even though they call them SGA had
put up some really good numbers this year, Jocus should
really be the MVP winner even though his team doesn't
have a bit of record. But so there's a lot
of debate around that argument as well.

Speaker 2 (01:50:34):
And what about load management the player participation policy. I've
seen this talked about about in recent times.

Speaker 21 (01:50:43):
Yes, so this is a bit of a slightly negative
note in terms of the NBA. The fun offs is
also cracking down on teams that are blatantly violating the
player Participation Policy, more commonly referred to as load management.
So a number of teams are currently being investigated for
sitting star players even though they're not injured, denying pain
fans opportunity to watch their favorite players up place in

(01:51:03):
attending games. So this is unfortunately part of the game
in recent years.

Speaker 2 (01:51:07):
Yeah, what a shame. Just before we move on a producer, Andy,
as you know, I was a big Pelicans fan. They're
not going to be in the playoff picture. I think
the record's eighteen and forty nine, so that's not playoff
basketball by any stretch. But are they coming to Melbourne?
Is that right?

Speaker 11 (01:51:23):
We are so.

Speaker 21 (01:51:24):
News earlier came out this week that the New Orleans
Pelicans will be heading head in Melbourne in October for
a historic series of games against Melbourne United and the
Southeast Melbourne Phoenix. This announcement was on the back of
news at the NFL and NFL will also be playing
games in Melbourne. So then, organized are hoping that New
Orleans star Zion Williamson will be healthy and make the

(01:51:44):
trip down on. Since entering the league, he has unfortunately
been plagued by injury, but will undoubtedly be the main
attraction for a Pelicans. So just the heads up last,
and I'm sure you know that a certain producers will
be submitting a red form sometimes seen to coincide around
that time.

Speaker 2 (01:51:58):
Yes, I will take it under consideration, Leon, I'll take
it under consideration. Can we stay with basketball because March
Madness is upon u S NCAA basketball College basketball for
those who are unfamiliar with it's starting on Tuesday to
find the top men's and women's college teams. First of all,
how big has March Madness become.

Speaker 4 (01:52:21):
Here in the States.

Speaker 21 (01:52:22):
It's huge. Most people that obviously a lot of people
that went to there certain colleges they call them that
alma mater really connected with their schools. I wanted to
comment on this, but yesterday I just want to make
a quick comment about I knew I knew a Tate
Jones and how he did a fantastic job breaking down
the competition the young Kiwi boy there. I was really
impressed by the the in depth knowledge of the college game.

(01:52:44):
But even more so if it's great work, ethic and
humility which will undoubtedly take him fin in his career.
So I've won look forward to following his career believing
I feel like a lot more of your listeners will
be back in UC San Diego. That they already didn't
have a teen in NCAA tournament, so go to Trentons.
I also just throwminded the audience pointy that much madness
referred to the NCAA Division One men's and women's basketball

(01:53:06):
championship tournaments. So in recent years, the phenomenal rights and
influence of one Caplan Clark is how popularized women's basketball,
a trend known as the Caplin Clark Effect. It's worth
mentioning that name, image and likeness more commonly referred to
as nil and the student transfer portal had completely changed
the college forty landscape exponentially in recent years, especially in

(01:53:27):
regards to basketball. So both NCAA tournaments consist of sixty
four teams for the women and sixty eight teams for
the men, and they're known for their thrilling, single elimination
format where teams compete to determine the national champion and
collegiate basketball. Millions of Americans watch their college teams on
the biggest stage and take part in what's known as
the Bracket Challenge, trying to pick the teams they think

(01:53:48):
will advance the Street sixteen, the Elite eight, to the
Final four, and the eventual winners. The event itself as
a rich history, having started way back in nineteen thirty
nine and has become a significant cultural phenomenon in the
US and now globally.

Speaker 2 (01:54:01):
Yeah, well, I know it's big news in our house.
My son Johnny is going to be glued to March madness,
as are many around the world. So looking forward to that.
Can we move to Major League Baseball? The new season
is almost upon us. In fact, I think it starts
in the weak ahead. Any big preseason stories from Major
League Baseball?

Speaker 21 (01:54:20):
Yes, so the season opener is taking pat in Tokyo,
which they've done over the last few years. That's only
a matter of days away. Spring trainings wrapped up, and
the current World Series champion LA Dodgers are taken on
the Chicago Cubs and a double header. Now, the Dodgers
spent a boatload of money bossing their roster, which is
already immensely strong in the off season, are like clearly

(01:54:41):
the favorites to repeat. Now they're widely considered the so
called villains of basketball because they have all this money
and they're just throwing it around. Willy Lilly, their closest
rivalry they've beaten the World Series. The New York Yankees
are already in trouble though, even before the first pitch
of the season is thrown. The Bronx Bombers have a
number of their key starting players injured or even out
for the whole season. It's a grueling schedule of one

(01:55:03):
hundred and sixty two regular season games. It really is
war of attrition before the playoffs even roll around, so
maintaining their healthy team is paramount for success in the sport,
and other teams to keep an eye on. The serious
contenders are the Atlanta Brays, New York Mets, Philadelphia Phillis,
Baltimore Orioles, Houston Afhirt and the San Diego Padres.

Speaker 2 (01:55:22):
Looking forward to a new season of MLB underway soon.
And can we finish with any can we finish with
NFL that is obviously in its off season, any big
stories around trades or contract extension? Free agency?

Speaker 21 (01:55:36):
Leon, Yeah, definitely, there's some big stories that I'm going
to share with the audience right now. Free agency. It's
fun and sent it with some recent big moves, so
the quarterback carousel.

Speaker 4 (01:55:46):
Begain with Super Bowl winner Matthew Stafford.

Speaker 21 (01:55:48):
Of the La Rams re signing with the franchise despite
a number of other big offers on the table. So
he was the first Domino to fall an e hectic
free agency period. In the Minnesota Vikings, you I know
you're done for Lois Justin traded their quarterback Sam Donald
to the Seattle Seahawks after Korea BS season last year.
Donald the three year deal with one hundred and ten
million with fifty five million guaranteed. It is a gamble

(01:56:11):
of thoughts for Seattle.

Speaker 4 (01:56:12):
Give them the.

Speaker 21 (01:56:13):
Statu of their office and line and a new offensive
coordinator some other big trades or Super Bowl winning defensive tackled.
Milton Williams, who are the major fact in Super Bowl
fifty nine, traded from the Philadelphia Eagles to the New
England Pagherriod. He agreed to terms on a four year
deal with one hundred and four million, including a twenty
four million signing bonus, sixty three million guaranteed and an

(01:56:34):
average annual based salary of twenty six million. As you
can see, point of these numbers are staggering if we
put that into context. Currently, the fifty highest paid players
in the NRL colectively earn forty five million Australian dollars,
which equates to about twenty nine million dollars US. It's
almost as if the NFL are printing their own money.

Speaker 2 (01:56:52):
It's crazy incredible.

Speaker 20 (01:56:53):
Yeah.

Speaker 21 (01:56:54):
So what probably one of the biggest stories to come
out of the NFL was Butffalo Bill's quarterback and regular
season MVP, Josh Allen. God has bagged that people use
that phrase to refer to, you know, people getting paid.
He signed a sixty extension on a record sitting deal.
They get this, He'll receive three hundred and thirty million,
including a record two hundred and fifty million guarantees and

(01:57:15):
he's not even the highest paid player in the league
that his numbers are staggering in a sport that is
a hard salary cap and true free agency, the NFL
has been structured in a way towards parody compared to
any of US professional sports league, so they sort of
money being thrown around as unprecedented. Finally, the betting market
has already released the odds for Super Bowl sixty no surprises.

(01:57:36):
Defending champion Philadelphia Eagles are clear favorites after they dismantled
candidsit in the Reefs and Super Bowl. The Chiefs are
second favorite SIS, ahead of the Baltimore Ravens, Bills and
Detroit Lyons.

Speaker 2 (01:57:48):
So much going on state side, Leon, Thank you so
much for your comprehensive rap of it all. We look
forward to catching up regularly across the year here on

Raizy, You've them obviously been your One of your lines
has been keeping eyes open mind. Where are you at
at the moment with the soligibility saga?

Speaker 15 (01:59:10):
Yeah, look I had a first a year, you know,
so I said I have a year to look at
it and where I stand. And the first thing is,
you know, my intentions for the comment was is it
fit for purpose still? You know currently in this model
where we're sitting, you know, globally and internally, and one
of my jobs is to make sure that the pathways

(01:59:31):
is strong so we can keep it, canue a flow
of quality players enjoy the game and also want to
come through and be professional rugby players and aspiration. So
we'll talk a little bit later on around the pathway
stuff that we're doing. But look, look, I understand how
important is and now I probably got more insight around
the flexibility there is. There isn't the current regulations. You know,

(01:59:56):
it is fit for purpose. There is a little bit
of flexibility there. And I just want to give you
an example. An open mind is someone like a Jody Barrett,
you know traditionally have gone to Japan to play. And
when Jordi came and said I've got an option for
for for Leinster and another an opportunity, you know, we
zoomed and we talked through all the practicalities. What would

(02:00:20):
what would his season look like going north? Is it
going to make him a better player? You know, and
once we'd listened and you know, had majority of the
six nations off, he'd had a break, he'd been well coached.

Speaker 7 (02:00:32):
You know.

Speaker 15 (02:00:32):
I just had to catch up with Jack Naber when
I was over there and talked and sat down with
him and just how impressed he was as a as
a player, as a man, how hard he worked on
and off the field. That were just incredibly impressed. You know,
we touched base with him. He's an off field coach
to Jordy, so he'd be leaning on and off the field.
And that's a prime example of keeping open mind someone

(02:00:55):
like himself going north. Okay, great, we're in a position now.
Will he'll come back as a better player and ultimately
that's what we want out of this and he's just
one example, you know, potentially more to come.

Speaker 2 (02:01:06):
There you go. Just a small snippet of a very
special Rugby Direct episode released at five o'clock on Tuesday morning,
with Elliot Smith and Liam Napier alongside Mark Robinson, CEO
of New Zealand Rugby and Scott Robertson, All Black's head coach.
Of course, that brings to an end our show. Just
about final text from Carl poney. I'm not a huge

(02:01:27):
follower of golf, don't play it, don't really watch it,
but Mate, that interview absolutely transcend it all Sport. It
was absolutely amazing to hear from Craig Perks. I literally
had tears in my eye, says Carl. The way Craig
described those shots and the background story of his journey riveting,
incredible radio. Thank you so much for sharing, Carl, Thank
you for texting in. Appreciate it very much. Yeah, one
of the more enjoyable fifteen minutes I've had in recent

(02:01:49):
times a chat with Craig Perks. Hopefully we can do
it again when March rolls around next year and get
the feeling he'd be just as articulate a storyteller. If
we did it, then that is us on Weekend Sport
for today. Huge tanks to any McDonald for producing the show.
Enjoy the rest of your way. Thank you for listening
to and for taking part in the conversation. If that's

(02:02:10):
what you elected to do. Tim Beverage is on your
radio after three o'clock to take you through the next
segment of Sunday with the Weekend Collective. And we're counting
down now. Towards Liam Lawson getting on the starting grid
at the Australian Grand Prix in Melbourne. Five o'clock is
scheduled start time for that, as he takes a full
time seat in Formula one for the very first time.

(02:02:32):
He's had all sorts of advice. I'm sure over the
last little while he's been told this, that and the
other thing. But as an exit song today, I think
the basic message should be Rihanna's basic message. Andy, just
shut up and drive man, I drive fast, fast, race cards,
just drive fast. Liam, just shut up and drive. Thank

(02:02:54):
you for listening. We're back on sports Talk tomorrow night.
See then.

Speaker 9 (02:03:01):
It's time she staid the same way there gets away

(02:03:33):
on accoun you know what to make around them more
than a must.

Speaker 16 (02:03:39):
Maybe again.

Speaker 9 (02:03:42):
Run on the lad maybe give him, maybe one away,
gave one back, there was six day, everyone back. Maybe
you'll get.

Speaker 1 (02:03:53):
Shut up and drawn.

Speaker 9 (02:03:57):
Shut up the dred, shut up, the dun let him
the dread.

Speaker 1 (02:04:18):
