Speaker 1 (00:07):
You're listening to the Wellington Mornings podcast with Nick Mills
from News Talks.
Speaker 2 (00:11):
A'd be Now, we've got a very special guest joining
US former Republican senator and former US Ambassador to New Zealand,
Scott Brown.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Good morning, Scott, Thank you, Ita, Good morning to you
and all your listeners.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
Does it feel funny to be talking back in New
Zealand after you spend so much time here?
Speaker 1 (00:30):
Oh?
Speaker 3 (00:30):
Yeah, listen. I love New Zealand. I think about it
every single day. I still wear my Phenamo And you know,
we have some great friends there who are actually listening
right now. And yeah, listen, that's a great country. Your
bloods over there.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
At least you'll understand by leguage. I won't be like
you're talking to a foreigner. Scott, you're a trump Becker.
Why did he win so convincingly? Come on, tell me
what your thoughts?
Speaker 3 (00:56):
Yeah, listen, I called it a while ago. I was
a little surprised at the fact that he won the
popular vote. But when you start to try to make
people do with the whole woke agenda, letting men play girls' sports,
having a poorest border, when you let fifteen million people
in and you've give them all free housing and bank
cards and cell phones, and yet you're you're not doing
(01:18):
that to our veterans and our citizens. And then you
throw the high cost of goods. A dozen eggs cost
four dollars and forty four cents the last time I
was in the store of a few days ago. And
then you throw in obviously all the support for the
wars all over and the fact that you know, we've
gotten into a mess and our world standing is gone.
But more importantly, you know, she never answered any questions.
(01:40):
She hid from the media. You guys will never tolerate that.
I was always available and she was never available. So
when you say, hey, what are you going to do
about you know, what's your economic agenda? Well, you know
I worked, I was from the middle class. Well, who cares.
What are you going to do for the country. How
are you going to get inflation and goods down? Are
we going to become energine intended? And how are you
going to shut the border? How are you going to
(02:01):
get us back on track and out of all these wars?
That's what people care about. And they took the electric grant,
the electric for granted, and one more thing, their new
thing is I've been watching and listening and speaking to
folks all day, is the blaming uneducated white women instead
of introspectively looking to see what they did wrong, which was,
you know, basically everything I just referenced.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
How did Trump actually stay in vogue over the eight years?
Speaker 3 (02:28):
Well, listen, out of anyone I've ever met, you may
not like him, and I know a lot of people
in New Zealand have the different thoughts about him, certainly,
but I will say that when christ Church happened, I immediately
called and he immediately gave me all the assets I
needed to make sure that the New Zealand government and
the people had every tool at their disposal, with the
PHS obviously helping and assist that. With the key react
(02:51):
which we pay, which you passed in record time with
Ambassador Grocer and crist Bodell's help, President sign it immediately,
So listen. He is a very determined, diligent man, unlike
anyone I've ever met. And the harder things are, the
more he digs in and said, you know what, I'm
going to get this gune the determination with everything he's
gone through you, whether they like him or not, you
(03:13):
have to go like, oh my god, how did he
pull this off? I mean it's historic, it's historic for
anywhere in the world.
Speaker 2 (03:18):
How did he survive all the scandals? I mean, you know,
one bad story about a politician and you're diad and
buried and gone.
Speaker 3 (03:26):
Well. I think the problem, and I think really where
they blew it is when you had Alan Bragg in
New York City. You know, basically take a state election
issue and try to morph it into a federal election issue.
I'm sorry, reverse that federal Election commission issue, which basically
Obama did the same thing. And he was fine, Hillary
(03:46):
Clinton and she was fine, But then they tried to
morph it into some type of state issue and give
it some type of state jurisdiction, and it was a sham.
And people looked at him in court and on like
what is this all about? Are you kidding me? I mean,
I've raised you know, millions and millions of dollars and
you know that this case made no sense. And so
when you say the court cases and the scandals, well
(04:09):
a lot of those scandals, respectfully, that one especially triggered
it to people are saying, yeah, stop, just leave the
guy alone. And they just kept coming and coming and
then sending someone to rape his private residents. Can you
imagine if they did that to Obama and his island
you treat in Nantucket?
Speaker 2 (04:23):
Come on, yeah, we're speaking to former New Zealand American
Ambassador to New Zealand Scott Brown, who lived in Wellington
for three years a few years ago. Scott, a lot
of people here are concerned. Me not so much, but
a lot of people are about the tariffs. You understand
the position of our trade with America more than anyone else.
(04:44):
Should we be concerned about the teriffs?
Speaker 3 (04:47):
Well, listen, you do about eight billion dollars and it's
a lifeblood. You have to trade with everybody because you
know it's New Zealand. You know you're in the kind
of the bottom of the earth, you know, next up
Antarctica basically, and it's important, of course. But they're not
talking about New Zealand. They're not talking about the relationship,
which we have an amazing relationship. Obviously, there's some dairy
issues which I tried to work on when I was
(05:09):
an ambassador, and if I'm involved, I'll continue to try
to work on. But when it comes to China and
what China is doing over leveraging Pacific island nations, manipulating
the currency, building and militarizing islands and changing the law
of the air and see as we know it, and
using their soft power like I remember when I was there,
they left your kiwis on the dock. They wouldn't let
(05:31):
him in. They turned away in their New Zealand flight.
I mean, that's the stuff that we're trying to address,
the unfair ability to come into a market. And that's
what China and India in some respects and some other
countries are doing. That's what he's talking about. He's not
talking about in New Zealand. And I'll tell you what
you know, Tom Yudall, good friend, he's a good ambassador.
(05:52):
He would never let it happen. I know whoever the
next ambassador is, I'm going to do my deep briefing
and briefing to make sure they understand it. And you have,
obviously Crystalobell and others who care very deeply about the
relationship as I do, and I will for the rest
of my life. If I see things going sideways, I
will absolutely pick up the phone and give my two cents.
Speaker 2 (06:13):
We were you on Alixa Nat and how was the party.
Speaker 3 (06:17):
Well, actually, I worked so hard leading up to that.
I went down to we have a place in Florida
and Fort Myers and I just hung out and I
did a lot of TV and radio, and I took
my dog, Gracie Diplo dog, who had a great residence
at the Lower Hut, and I was by myself, but
I was, yeah, yeah, it was great. Man kick back
(06:39):
and get a couple of beers and finish my TV,
and it was I needed a break. I'm sorry, I
just needed a break. And it's all good though. I'm
working very hard now and trying to help as much
as I can. Obviously, moving forward, you.
Speaker 2 (06:53):
Don't have to apologize for partying by yourself. Some of
my best parties.
Speaker 3 (07:00):
The next time I'm there. I love that.
Speaker 2 (07:02):
Well, I want to ask you about a couple of
things about New Zealand. I mean, firstly, I come from
a musical background. I ran bars and venues and nightclubs,
and I was always interested in reading about you and
your guitar's. My favorite guitar is pre CBS Straight. What's yours?
Speaker 3 (07:20):
Well, you know it's funny. Rick Nielsen gave me a
give some custom SG there's only fourteen of the World
and it's a gold sg and you can go to
at our Scott Brown and the Diplomat's website. You can
go obviously and see it all over YouTube. Well, I
do have a band here and I went to New Zealand.
I laughed with three guitars and I came back with thirteen.
(07:42):
And one of them is a gold thunder Strat that
is in nineteen eighty nine Strat in the original case
with the directions, the lots the moisture pouch that I
got down a low hut at the music store on
there and I got it for a steal. I'm embarrassed,
and that's part of my second favorite. Then I had
(08:02):
a young man and tit build me two guitars, the
Flying V which is a great one, and the other
one is called the Unifier. It's New Zealand American tine
in New Zealand wood and then the Maui chief engraved
on it and it's a it's an incredible uh incredible
guitar and looking red. Blessed.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Man.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
If you had the worst day in the world, like
if I was Kamala and I lost, I would go
play my guitar and Damn my god, what a great day.
Speaker 2 (08:30):
Look it's Jesus a strange guitar for you. I wouldn't
have thought that one. There's not too many of them around,
not too many people that play them.
Speaker 3 (08:35):
Do they no, no, no, but it's it's it's fun.
It was a handmade so k KII and that thing
just like the you just hear and you just do that.
That that rock and roll g g or E. You
know that, that rocky and it's like, oh my god,
your whole body shakes.
Speaker 2 (08:54):
We're talking to if you just joined the show. We're
talking to Scott Brown. He was an ambassador of New
Zealand and obviously had a musical background as well as
a legal background. What are you up to now, Scott?
What do you do? You're a lawyer? What's it? What
are you up to?
Speaker 3 (09:06):
Yeah, listen, I have obviously a TV contract. I'm on
a bunch of boards. I coached girls varsity basketball at
a high school in Massachusetts. I do have a rock band.
We opened up for skid Row and you may know
who that is, and the Doctor, the Eagles and the
Bullet Boys. We play all of the New England went
down to Milwaukee and played at the convention at the
Holly Davidson Museum. And you know, we do very very
(09:29):
well financially. And I'm four grandchildren, which I'm davisitting too
with them right now, thank God in bed so I
can come out and talk to you.
Speaker 2 (09:39):
Do you reckon there's any chance you could come back
as an ambassador of the New Zealand.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
Listen, it's certainly up to the president. But you know,
it's interesting. I was just reflecting I have you know,
my friend Bruce said col Down and Lowa Hutton and
a lot of the MPs. I don't know if you're
aware of this, but I met all one hundred and
twenty MPs. I made a point to meet and reach everybody,
and it was an honor to meet them, you know,
from the most conservative to the most liberal, share and
(10:07):
try to find some common values. But listen, it's no secret, man,
I love New Zealand. I mean with a capital L.
I love the people. I love doing triathlons there. I
love doing the key react and doing the hard business. Obviously,
when when christ Church happened, certainly we had the White
Island volcano which which obviously we had to deal with,
and then you know, trying to get the PEUS and
(10:27):
help your military and just established that great, you know
friendship that we've had for really forever.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
So I have the fut cool wit and said there's
a position in New Zealand. Would you take it?
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Absolutely? Absolutely, Scott has.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Been amazing talking to you. Appreciate I know that you
are very very popular in New Zealand. When you were here,
everyone still talks about you. You made a great name
for yourself in New Zealand. So we appreciate what you
did for New Zealand and keep fighting the fight for us.
And I just want lastly to ask you if you
if you were a key we would would you be concerned?
Speaker 3 (11:01):
No? No, no, I'd be I know because you know
why because the wards would stop. Uh. You know the
anti Semitism that we're finding around not only our country,
but you know your country. The influence of China that
they're trying to basically, you know, manipulate quite a few
things and not being good actors. If you don't believe me,
I mean Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton said, you know,
(11:22):
China wants to be a world power. You know, they
got to start playing by the rules, and they're not
so listen. I have very fond memories of New Zealand.
You know, there's not a second that goes by. I
don't think about everybody, and uh, you know, it was
a long way away, but every second was worth it.
So God bless you and your country and uh you
know it's it's I'm hoping to get back as soon
(11:45):
as possible in one way or the other with you
and have a hearer or do something else.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
So you we go to a basket, We'll go to
a side skym in Wellington with you. I'd love to
take you to a science gym. Tell me who's your
who's your mb it?
Speaker 3 (11:58):
Oh come on, man, I'm a Sposton Celtics fan. My
da singing the national ranthem and a couple and next
week and uh yeah, very close with the law of
the Celtics old and new and uh you know, obviously
they had a great year in Jason Tatum and my
favorite one is Derek White and Peyton pitcherd there they're
like the heart and soul of the team.
Speaker 2 (12:17):
Well, I don't know whether you know, but Jason Tatum's
dad's coaching in Australia and the Australian League and do
it extremely well. I don't know whether you knew that,
but there's a bit of information for you.
Speaker 3 (12:25):
I did not. I did not. I remember seeing the
break because I still wear my breaker shirt all over
the place. And I've been to a couple of games,
obviously in New Zealand. But I you know, I love basketball,
played it all growing up. Basically saved my life and
I'll never forget it. And yeah, listen, I'm psyched to
come back and have my band replay and have some fun.
(12:47):
And yeah, great to talk to you.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
Appreciate your time. I know you're a busy man, ambasted
in New Zealand. Scott Brown, God bless you and thank
you for your time. Then don't forget to give us
a yell on News Talks. It'd be Wellington Mornings. When
you come back to Wellington. We'll get you in for
