Cinema Span

Cinema Span

The first season of Cinema Span is about one thing and one thing only: the films of 2007. We’re doing all of it, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly! (The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly will not be covered because it’s from 1966.)

Ah, to be an outlaw in the wild west. Got nothing but a crew to back you up. Like really nothing. As one my favorite criminals Neil McCauley once said, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner." They were living this life. These guys slept outside and had like one outfit. No wonder they were desperate for some cash. Crazy that capitalis...

Welcome to the Grindhouse!! We're covering THE seminal 2007 double feature: Robert Rodriguez's Planet Terror and Quentin Tarantino's Death Proof. But wait, there's more! Fictional trailers by real directors, like Edgar Wright's "Don't!", Rob Zombie's "Werewolf Women of the SS", and Eli Roth's "Thanksgiving" (now a major motion picture!)

Joining the podcast this week is Patrick Cotnoir (@cotnoir), producer of The George Lucas Talk...

Happy Halloween! We're celebrating 2007 with Rob Zombie's reimagining of John Carpenter's classic, Halloween. And if you thought Zombie's take was disturbing, just wait until you see Michael Haneke's remake of his own 1997 film Funny Games. Master of horror PJ Volk (@pjmas) helps us look into the eyes of a psychopath, while Ben Hrycak (@goodfellaben) of The Fools Journey Podcast reminds us that if your dad is badass enough, you ca...

"DAAH Mist." (Man it's getting hard to write these.)

This week we're diving into a science-fiction/horror double feature: Danny Boyle's box office bomb about bombing the sun, Sunshine, and The Mist, another Steven King adaptation by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile).  Taking a step away from covering the prestigious catalogue of art house films are the hosts of CriteriCast (@critericast)! Humanity's last ho...

Averick Faeth (@aveorrick) crashes the podcast with a direct-to-video movie he dug up at a gas station DVD Bargain Bin called "Believers", which is about an end of the world death cult. Directed by Daniel Myrack of The Blair Witch Project fame.

Louis managed to dig up another film that feels like it doesn't exist called "Mr. Brooks" staring Kevin Costner as a serial killer, William Hurt as Costner's alter ego, Dane Cook as a wannab...

Phone rings, door chimes, in comes Cinema Span! It's a Stephen Sondheim double feature, starting with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp's proper film adaptation of Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street. Following that up we have the filmed version of the 2006 Broadway Revival Cast of Company. It was filmed in 2007 so it counts, okay?

You're walking in the woods. There's no one around and your phone is dead. Out of the corner of your eye you spot it - it's Hollywood Superstar Shia LaBeouf. You probably know how the rest of the song goes.

Joining the conversation we have actor/musician Averick Faeth (@aveorrick) and actor/musician Brandt Garber (@brandt.garber).

This episode we cover the end of two iconic 2000's blockbuster franchises, Spider-Man and The Pirates of the Carribbean. Both entries were "the black sheep" of their respective trilogies at the time, and yet they're probably better than we give them credit for. It just goes to show how low the bar really got with Pirates 4&5 as well as the Amazing Spider-Man and MCU reboots. Into the Spider-Verse slaps though.

2023 may be the year of Gretta Gerwig's Barbie, but 2007 was all about Bratz! Real life Bratz doll Kat Phan (@Sugarbrushh) joins the podcast to break down what made the Bratz dolls so iconic. Then, real life stoner Louis talks about Smiley Face for a half hour without really saying anything of substance, which is probably what Anna Farris' character would do in the same circumstance. Happy 4/20 y'all!

It's a miracle, we're pregnant! How did that happen? Can a podcast even get pregnant? Does it matter? We're having twins, and I know just what I'm going to call them, baby Juno and baby... Knocked Up. Alright that sounded better in my head.
