בבוקר יום שלישי, 11 בספטמבר 2001, חטפו חברי ארגון הטרור אל-קאעידה ארבעה מטוסי נוסעים אמריקניים. שניים מהמטוסים עליהם השתלטו המחבלים התרסקו בצמד מגדלי התאומים שבמרכז הסחר העולמי שבניו-יורק והובילו לקריסתם כעבור שעתיים. את המטוס השלישי ריסקו החוטפים אל תוך בניין הפנטגון בארלינגטון שבווירג'יניה, ואילו הרביעי, שבאמצעותו תכננו החוטפים לפגוע בבית הלבן או בבניין הקפיטול בוושינגטון, התרסק לבסוף בשדה פתוח בפנסילבניה, לאחר מאבק בין נוסעי המטוס לחוטפים. הפיגועים, בהם נספו כמעט 3,000 אזרחים, נחשבים עד היום לפיגועי הטרור הגדולים והקטלניים ביותר בהיסטוריה. לאירועי אותו היום היו השלכות דרמטיות באינספור היבטים: הפיגועים שינו ועיצבו מחדש את פני האומה האמריקנית מבחינה פוליטית, צבאית, כלכלית, משפטית, חברתית ותרבותית - השפעות אשר חלחלו בהמשך באופנים שונים לעולם כולו. עם ציון 20 שנה לפיגועי 9/11, האוניברסיטה המשודרת מביאה סדרה בת שלושה פרקים, בהגשתה של טלי ליפקין-שחק, בניסיון לבחון חלק מאותן השפעות ברבות השנים. 147098
