בשנת 1989, ערב נפילת חומת ברלין, פרסם החוקר האמריקאי פרנסיס פוקויאמה מאמר, שסימן את נקודת המפתח שברגע כתיבתו וזיכה אותו בתהילה עולמית – "קץ ההיסטוריה?". על אף סימן השאלה שהציב בכותרתו, פוקויאמה לא ממש הביע תהייה במאמרו – למעשה הוא הכריז כי עם נפילתו של הגוש הקומוניסטי, בא לסופו המאבק האידאולוגי בין צורות משטר שליווה את המאה ה-20 וקבע את ניצחונה של הדמוקרטיה הליברלית. שלושה עשורים חלפו מאז ונדמה כי הכרזת הניצחון היתה מוקדמת. עלייתם של משטרים פופוליסטיים בכל רחבי הגלובוס, צמיחתן של הרשתות החברתיות וטכנולוגיות בינה מלאכותית והתחזקותה של התפיסה הרב-תרבותית, מציבים כולם אתגרים חדשים בפני הדמוקרטיה, שנדמית בימינו מעורערת מתמיד. את הסדרה הנוכחית של הקורס "מבוא ל", שנערכה בשיתוף המכון הישראלי לדמוקרטיה, נקדיש לדמוקרטיה. ביחד עם ליעד מודריק ומיטב חוקרי המכון, נבקש להבין מהם עקרונותיה, כיצד היא משתנה במאה ה-21 בישראל ובעולם, ומהן השפעות האיומים שניצבים לפתחה עלינו, האזרחים 126448
