Het is de jongensdroom van Gert om boer te worden. Net als dat eindelijk gelukt is, breekt er brand uit. En nog een. Het stopt niet. In korte tijd is het 9 keer raak op plekken die allemaal iets met Gert te maken hebben. Er komen honderden runderen om het leven en van zijn bedrijf blijft helemaal niks over. Wie heeft het op deze boer gemunt? Heeft het iets te maken met zijn geaardheid, waar hij in een christelijke omgeving voor uit was gekomen? Of… deed Gert het zelf? Hij is zéér kritisch op het onderzoek naar de branden: oud-korpschef Jan Rooijakker. Hij bestudeerde het strafdossier rondom boer Gert en kan niet begrijpen dat de politie maar bij één enkele verdachte uitgebreid stilstaat. En ook privé-beveiliger Gert-Jan Soontiëns, die wekenlang op het terrein van Gert rondliep met zijn mensen in de tijd van de branden, ziet een ander persoon als voornaamste mogelijke brandstichter.
Steeds weer moet de brandweer van Werkhoven uitrukken om branden te blussen in een stal, huis of andere plek die gelinkt is aan boer Gert. En dat is vaak: in een jaar tijd breekt 9 keer brand uit in- en rond het dorp. Persfotograaf Koen Laureij staat steeds bij de afzetlinten om de vlammen vast te leggen en maakt de situatie op het erf van dichtbij mee.
