Speaker 1 (00:00):
It's nine with Jenny Garth and Tori Spelling. Welcome back.
This is a new episode, and we have the amazing
Nicole Tom who played Sue Scanlon. Obviously so well known
for so many things, especially the Nanny Um. But she
(00:20):
we have so many questions for her because we want
to find out was there so sweet another nine o
two and spinoff and she was going to start in it,
So we want to see you play the younger sister
of Scott Scanlon, and she was on the show for
four episodes. Let's have a little chat with Nicole Tom. Hello, Hi,
(00:45):
so good to see you. Oh my gosh, I hate
I hate these like zoom things. I'm so bad at it. No,
you're here, That's all that matters. Like how beautiful you are. Oh,
thank you. You guys look great deal. Oh my gosh,
our little baby Sue is all growed up. You guys.
(01:06):
We have so many questions for you. Oh my gosh.
We First of all, it's just so weird because I
saw that we were gonna be talking to you today,
to you today, and I got so excited because we
have like some weird, you know, deeper family history because
your brother David played my brother on like my very
(01:27):
first acting job. Yeah, brand new life. I was so
excited when um when I got nine o two and
oh or like I felt I felt like I, um
was connected to you because of that keeping it in
the family. Yeah, and uh it was. How is family?
(01:48):
How's your brother and your sister and your mom, the
whole everybody good? You know where it's been. Um, it's
been hard the past couple of years. Um my my
mom is, oh god, you know it's there's a well,
there's a lot going on. Um but all in all,
they're they're doing well. My sister is directing, Um, she's
(02:11):
directing Dynasty now good for Oh my gosh, tell Heather High. Um.
But yeah, just uh, I want to know, like, take
it from the beginning. How did you get into acting?
Because you have an f family full of actors? Yeah, gosh,
and you all started out super young. Yeah kind of. Um, well,
(02:36):
it's it's sort of a long story. Um. I my
mom was a casting director. She wasn't a casting director.
She worked in an agency and um uh in Washington
and uh we we all she always wanted to be
an actress kind of forced it on us. Um I
(02:57):
was I always like to um, you know, playmate believe
and um, I was kind of an awkward child perm
and braces and stuff and never really uh. Um, I
never booked a commercial. Um, but my brother and my
sister worked a lot, UM, and so we had always
come down for pilot season and um uh one year
(03:21):
we just came down for pilot season and uh I
never went home the rest of the history. Yeah. UM
gotten to acting class, Actually, I am. I saw in
the episode that I watched UM my first episode on
nine O two and o um, there was a girl
from my acting class that I was in, like Jenny Kuan.
(03:45):
She she was in the episode. You were just so
damn cute. You were so adorable in this episode. I
really appreciated you as like the sweet, young, innocent so
over that a good girl to night. I must have
been fun though. It must have been really fun to
play sort of two sides of that character. Yeah, it was.
(04:10):
It was so much fun. I remember when I auditioned
for it. UM, I got all dressed up, my sister
did my hair and makeup, because I mean the show
nine two, it was huge. Like when I was on
it and I was just like, oh my god, I
can't believe it. I have this audition and I wanted
(04:31):
to do like a really good job, but they they
had me come back in because I went in really
sweet beginning and then they're like, well can she be
can she be like, you know, sort of you know,
the bad girl. Um, so they wanted me to come
back in, um being the bad girl and so UM.
(04:52):
I had my sister do my hair and makeup and
um and dressed me and um. I actually he took
pictures before my audition. I'll send him to you guys.
You have we would allowed to see that. Yeah, I'm
looking at it right now. Oh my goshhow show with
U a black tank top with the like a cross
(05:16):
you know that was really liked, like a big one
with glitter that I put on. Um it um, I
don't know. And when I got it, when I got
the part, I was just like, oh my gosh, I'm so.
I was so nervous. Wait, so was this before Beethoven
(05:36):
or was they? How did that work? What came first?
At Beethoven was my very first job? Um so this
I looked it up. It was two It was pretty
much like right after Beethoven first. I was thirteen. Oh
my gosh, years old. I always loved Beethoven and not
(05:58):
my kids watching nice and still hold up. It's a classic.
You know, we wanted to ask you, Um, We've talked
about this on the show a couple of times that
there was a rumor that, uh, there was gonna be
a spinoff of uh, sort of like the Younger Crew
of kids, like your character and Dana Baron's character, who
(06:19):
was also in this episode. Nikki, did you did you
know that that was like in the I heard something
like that, UM, but I didn't. I don't know if
I was one of the people. I think I might
have been, But yeah, I did hear that there was
(06:40):
maybe going to be like a little um like a spinoff.
That would have been asked. So when you initially auditioned,
did they say how many episodes this character would be in? Um,
we're just trying to put the pieces together. If there
was more, like we were so curious. I don't think so,
but I know that. Um. I always thought I was
(07:03):
in five episodes, but I guess I was when I
looked it up on IMDb it was only in four. Well,
we're gonna be rewatching them all back, so you could
be right has definitely had wrong info before. Oh really, yes, well,
I mean I always thought it was five, but I
(07:24):
can't remember. I mean, you were so so young. What
was it? What was like your Do you have like
a favorite memory of your time on set? Or who
did you hang out with the most? Do we want
to know because we were so you know, fan I was.
I was really like, um, I was so nervous to
meet all of the guys because I just thought all
of them were so cute. Um and I, um, I
(07:51):
remember my very first uh uh scene that the scene
that we shot was the one um with the um
the little plaid dress with the ruffle ruffles and stuff
in the bathroom where I'm smoking and stuff. I'm like
just taking a puff. But first of all, with the smoking,
(08:12):
you look like you've never smoked a cigarette before. Was
that the first time you've ever smoked? I mean hopefully
you're thirteen? Um, yes, that was yes, No, I started
smoking when it was not, but it wasn't so like
I felt so weird watching you smoke because you're just
such a little young sweet thing and it just felt
so me too. And the way I like, I was
(08:34):
just like just blowing it out like but I think
it kind of worked for the character because I mean,
for sure, just you know, going through a lot and
probably didn't really smoke, but thought that that was like,
you know, the thing, bad thing to do for sure. Um,
(08:55):
the rebellion, Yeah, you had some really tough topics that
uh there, we've been talking about it. I don't really
know what's going to happen because I don't remember and
I have never watched the show back, so I'm not
sure what happens with your character. But I think it
gets a little crazy with with my understanding, Yeah it does. I, Um,
(09:16):
don't tell her, don't tell her. She doesn't know. I won't.
I won't tell. Um. Um, yes she you know, she's
Sue Scanlon, so Scott Scalon's younger sisters. So just with
that is the tragedy of his death right that probably
changed a lot for her. Sure that was it was
(09:39):
a lot of like yeah, a lot, a lot of
heavy subject matter though that you had to deal with
at such a young age, Like how did you manage
all that? Oh? Well, um, when I was a little girl,
like I used to like to play, I believe a lot,
(10:02):
but I would I would always like take it to
the like really dramatic. Um point, like like I don't
know why I my childhood was a little uh. Um,
it wasn't the easiest. So I had a lot I
have a lot of things to drop from. I guess,
(10:23):
um my early years. Um, it's so it it. I
just like I really loved um going into a different person.
And I guess I could kind of relate to Sue
in that way that I could, you know, sort of
pretend to be somebody that I'm wasn't, you know, or
(10:44):
to sort of escape my reality. Is your mom still
in the business, no, um my mom um my mom
my mom had a stroke like a couple of years so,
but she's, um, she's doing okay. But no she she uh,
(11:08):
she took acting classes and stuff. She never um she
worked as an agent um for a little while, like
an assistant. But um, she kind of grew up in
a time that you know, you had to be something
you you know, she had to be a teacher, so
um she I guess she like her parents wanted her
(11:30):
to be a um like that's just what she had
to do, you know. So she always wanted to be
um in in the acting world. And I guess she
beat me have sort of lived vicariously through us kids.
But she wasn't like a huge stage bomb either though,
(11:51):
you know, she was just wonderful. I love my mom.
It's interesting, you know, like because you were so young.
We were so young we were making the show. You
were so young. When you're making the show, you watch
(12:12):
it back, you watch back your first episode, Like, what,
how did you feel like? Because sometimes when we watch
it back at such an odd like separation, you know,
you don't know who that person is that you're watching
on screen. Well, you knew the show was hugely famous
when you were on, but you were thirteen, right, So
(12:34):
had you ever even saw it? I mean it was
for a little bit older? Oh yeah, yeah, Um I
was sorry fruit fly m I uh yeah. I mean
all of the kids in my school. I was in
junior high, you know, so it was I think I
(12:57):
was in junior high. Yeah, seventh grade, yeah, because it
was two right, Yeah, didn't did you? I was fourteen?
Did your Were your friends freaking out that you were
on the show? I mean, yes, everybody was. They were.
It was it was I was so happy. I think
(13:20):
I ran around the block like screaming. I was so
excited and you went back to school though, like while
you were filming it, it did. What was that? How
did you manage like being in a spotlight kind of
and then going back and being a normal girl. Sometimes
kids can be you know, like they don't want to
be too nice to you because, um, they don't want
(13:41):
you to think that they like you just because you're
you know, on a show, so they'll be mean to
you instead. But um, I didn't, you know, because then
I got the nanny, like pretty much right after when
I was fourteen, So I went back to school like
for I have a twin brother, David, you know, so
(14:02):
he was in school a lot more than I was.
I was you know, set schooled. But going back and
dealing with the the kids, it's like I had to
make the friends all over again, you know, Like I
was away for three weeks then come back to normal
like public school, and um, I actually went to school
(14:24):
with them. It was Hilary Swink. She was on nine right.
She lived with my family when we first um when
when she first came down to really she and her
mom lived with you, not just um and stayed in
our apartment. Like after this was I was put in
(14:48):
acting class for like three years before I even had
an audition. Um, who was your acting teacher? Diane Harden
and Nora Eckstein if the young actors is love them?
Do you know them? I remember the names? Yeah, I
don't think I ever studied with Diane Harden, But isn't
she the mom of um what's her daughter? Laura? Yes?
(15:16):
Also that yeah good company? Yeah yeah, Well it was
like the place to be if you were a kid
in so right when people would have been like recognizing
you as and I know to when I was airing
and recognizing you on the streets as being Sue Scanling.
(15:37):
You got the Nanny, which became a huge uber success.
So was it like I'm sure they stopped like Nino
didn't go on, Oh you were just Maggie. Oh, I
don't know. Sometimes are people are like, oh my gosh,
that was you. Let me realize that, Um it's I.
(16:01):
I've been recognized for I get recognized fanana to a
no um uh still really yeah, because you look exactly
the same. You were such a young little nugget and
now like you look completely you look the same, cutie pie.
(16:23):
I wronged to say that unwed father was with Ryan
Austin Green. Oh my god. Sorry, Nicole had like a
like movie of the week. Your man was he your
father or or the baby daddy? Yeah, he was putting
her father. We had a one night stand and um,
(16:46):
I got pregnant. I remember when we um shot that
scene on the boat. Um, the director was like, ah, okay,
you're gonna take his shirt off and then you're gonna,
you know, go for his pants. It's like choreographing the
makeout scene. Is this is this hard for you, Tory?
It's okay. I'm a big girl. I could. I like
(17:09):
you so much that it's okay. She's so sweet, she's
so considerate of your feelings about no one. Oh my god,
it's like you just no, thank you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry.
It was an acting job. It wasn't real. Yeah. Yeah
that was after and you were reunited with Yes. Ryan
(17:30):
Austin Green. Yeah, okay. So so you were choreographing taking
off his pants to hear more about the pants and
the shirt, take off the button and then go for
his undershirt and and then go for the pants and
stuff as you're making out, and and so I was
like okay, um, and then he's like, and he'll, you know,
(17:51):
take your flouse shoulder off and and then we'll cut.
I was like okay, And so we're making out and
I get the shirt off and I'm going for his
undershirt and I'm like coming out, undershirt, come out. And
then finally he stopped the scene. He's like, ouch, you've
(18:15):
got my underwear and I've given him like wegy, Like,
oh my god, I knew it was like all the
way up is he wearing a good body suit? Like
how do you have some big boxers on or something? Okay, Nicole,
you just blew our minds. We've all we've retraced this.
(18:36):
Now we know the reason that he can't have girls.
This all ties back now that massive wedgy somehow did
something to the female sperm and he can only have boys.
How many kids does he have now? About to have
his fifth? Oh my gosh. But we were joking, not joking,
(19:00):
we were like fascinating that, you know, how did that happen?
How do yeah? He has you know, he's had his
first son with with Vaness Marcel who was on our show,
then three with Megan Fox and now with Sharna he's
having his new baby. All boys. Oh my gosh, that's
that's insane. Wait wait, so what happened when you when
(19:22):
he he's like, oh god, you know, he's like, oh
gosh out and then I dramatic what Yeah, he was
very dramatic about it. Maybe I don't know. You must
have been mortified. Oh my gosh, it was love scenes
(19:45):
can be dangerous, you guys. And then he had to
go back and be sexy and into it and do
it again. Like that's that's what sucks sometimes. Yeah. I
think he like put his boxers like down lowered or
maybe just on act as Whitey is wife beater or whatever.
Oh my gosh, insane. So I didn't have to like
(20:06):
actually pull it out. I love that we didn't even
put together the dots with that one. Thank you Amy
for telling us that. We've been in so many projects though,
like a series films. What do you miss like the
sitcom life, because that is a good life. Oh I
love it. Yeah, yeah it was. I mean it was wonderful.
(20:28):
It's like the so much fun to be in front
of a live audience and um feel that energy, like
that's my that's my favorite thing to do is his
theater and doing a sitcom. It's kind of like like
that you have a performance every week and it's really
I do want miss it. Well, maybe I'll be back
(20:49):
doing that. What do you have going on? Now? We
should do a reboot of The Nanny? Why now she's
the press. It in a sag and it's like you
hang out with me, You've become the president of Sack. Like, wow,
I didn't connect those dots either. There you go. Yeah,
(21:10):
the Colonel Tom, you were fascinating. Um wait, has there
ever been talking of a reboot of The Nanny? Have
you heard the work? Well? Um, I thought of a
I thought of an idea, but I haven't you know,
I've kind of put it on the back burner and stuff. Um,
I don't tell us, we won't tell anyone nobody. Yeah,
(21:35):
but I don't know. Maybe someday there I think that.
I think that maybe even in a different format, like
kind of like a marvelous Mrs Maisel type of them,
you know, format like a thirty minute um, single camera
like for the for the reboot. But um just thought
(21:55):
they did with Fresh Prince. That's what they're not like
the dramatic. I was just gonna say heads up to
you a little pre warning when you change the format
and creativity a little too much. The fans just aren't
into it. We know that firsthand. Well, it would be great,
(22:17):
and you should do that, and we're going to help
put that out there because we would love to see it. Okay,
Well I didn't really. I mean, you know, it's it's whatever,
something I was working on. But I don't think. I'm
I don't know, do it? Do it? Do it? I'm
a stuttering mess. Sometimes you're adorable. I could watch and
(22:42):
listen to you forever, Like I love that you are
still quirky and giggly and adorable and remind me of
your third year old self, but a gorgeous woman bringing
it out in me. I mean, it's it's like I'm
stepped back into that little girl role. Well, on that note,
(23:14):
can we play a game with you? Sure? We play
this game with all of our guest stars. Um, it's
called Kiss Mary Kicked to the Curb. Now, this does
not involve real actor, so you're not hurting our feelings.
It's not us. Well obviously it's not us because you're
going to pick the boys. Um, but yeah, or you
(23:37):
might not, whatever you think, whatever you want. Who which
character would you kiss, Which character would you marry? Which
character would you kick to the curb? As you not
a sue scandlin? Oh is me as you as a viewer?
Oh gosh? Um, well I kiss Brian Austin Green because
he gets mad when you give him wetges. But I
(24:00):
actually probably i'd probably kicked him to the curb. I'm
so sorry that would stapped made a lasting impression on you. Yeah, wow,
I would. I would kick him to the curb. Sorry, Brian, Um,
I you know, do you love him? But um, I
(24:20):
would probably kiss um? Oh god? Uh Dylan? No, no, no, yeah, Dylan,
and then probably marry Brandon. Oh my gosh, solid answers.
I'm trying to know what's going on for you now
in like, what's up? Um? What are you focusing on?
(24:45):
I actually I just booked a movie, um that I'm
gonna be shooting in March, which I'm really excited about,
really fun character. Can you tell us anything? It's a comedy,
a thriller and uh sort of a murder mystery too.
(25:06):
Where can we see it? When can we see it? Um?
I don't know. We're gonna be filming it and so then,
um you know when and when it sells, you'll be
able to watch it in the theater. So it's like
an independent film. Yeah, I love it, very cool. It's um.
And then I did this other job last year, um,
which I can't really talk about um, but it was
(25:29):
the most stress I can't talk about it yet, but
it was the most stressful thing I've ever done in
my entire life. Was it a movie a TV show?
It was a TV show? Oh, Now I really want
to know. I know, like, okay, what do you know
when it's coming out? I don't. They don't have a
(25:51):
they don't have a set date. Okay, But why was
it so stressful? Why was it so stressful? Was it
the content that was stressful or the experience experience? Because
I had just like um, you know, with COVID and everything,
and being away from people for so long, um, then
(26:13):
suddenly being around people again, um without and we didn't
you know, have to wear masks when we were working,
and and just like it was just so um. It's
so I was so happy to be like back, you know,
working with people and around people again. That but the
(26:34):
situation that I was in, uh, it's like nothing I've
ever I can't talk I can't talk about I can't
talk about I love it. That's something that you can't
talk about it really, Um, yes, sure I can talk
about it when it when I can talk about it, okay,
Oh my gosh, Okay, dying to know see you're lovely,
(26:59):
You're so so talented, and I wanted to be nice
to see you. Um. I wanted to talk about my outfits. No,
please please love a good fashion of it. Those Yeah,
those outfits were really something. Did you have say in
(27:21):
what they put in you on you? Or were you
just like okay, no, Um, I really didn't. But um,
I have always loved fashion like so much. Like I
loved your baseball dress that you had on you and
that was so cute. But um, one of the outfits
(27:42):
that I really loved, um of Sue Scanlon's was this
little vest um with the bra under it, with just
the bra. No. Yeah, And I told the wardrobe gals,
I was like, I just I love this best so much.
And they they're like, well, really cool. If you love
(28:02):
it so much, you can have it. You have it.
They give it to me. Oh my gosh, oh love.
You are officially the best guest star we have ever
had on the podcast. Look at you. Oh, I love it.
You know it isn't cute, it's really cute. Um, it's
(28:25):
so cute. Oh, my gosh, you have it. I love
that so much. Of course I wouldn't. I would never
get rid of it. I mean it's my ston nest.
I love it. So take you back to Sue Scanlon
right now, back into the episode where Dylan is torn
between uh e torm between Kelly and Brenda. We have
to ask and you don't have to say it because
(28:47):
Gen's here team Kelly or team Brenda. My gosh, I mean,
this is reminding me a lot of Now. I don't
know if you guys would think this not, but do
you watch Euphoria. It's a little bit darker. Everyone. Everyone
on our instagram is saying this. Oh my god, Nicole, yes, okay,
(29:11):
give your theory. But well it's sort of like, I mean, um, oh, oh,
who is like, you know, oh with the cigarettes and stuff. Um,
but hers is a little bit you know, darker of course,
um and then um and then like I can't remember
(29:33):
the names of the other people, but like Kelly uh
with with Dylan, you know, she's just like a friend
that's you know, cheated on her best friend's boyfriend. You know,
she's she's like Cassie, so okay. So it is kind
of like everyone's like, oh, my gosh, who's na gonna choose?
Is it gonna be Cassie or Maddie? But here we go,
(29:55):
You're right, Dylan, Kelly or Brenda. My gosh, I have
to watch you for you know, Oh my gosh. Everyone's
like team Cassier, team Maddie. Whoa. But yeah, um, I
think that personally, I think that I'm so sorry, but
(30:16):
I think that Dylan should be with Kelly. I love
their connection and but Brenda, you know, and Dylan have
a great thing going too, but he's being so like he's,
you know, kissing on Brenda right in front of Kelly.
It's all along. It's like psychological torture. Yeah, a nice guy,
(30:42):
like exactly what Nate's doing in front of Yeah, with
Maddie and Cassie. Oh my god, wait Amy, everyone's saying
like euphoria, they're like tying it together. So all over
our Instagram, these comparisons are being drawn, and I'm so
happy to pull brought it up because yeah, there's a
lot of people that are really seeing these similarities, which
(31:03):
is like quite a compliment to nine two one because
Koria is like, I wish we had that makeup though,
oh my god, they're makeup. I guess like on points,
it's so fun they'll be they'll be watching all of
those episodes back like like and being like I did
on camera, Like no, we have talked about how it
(31:26):
is so extreme and racy, like imagine like nine two
and l like we thought we were doing was pushing
the envelope, which it was in terms of the storylines
and everything, but having to do those scenes. So I
need to watch you for it because I just don't
think she can handle it. I don't think we're all
a little traumatized, like emotionally, Like imagine what you'd be
(31:49):
like now if you had to do those scenes, like
literally like half naked, doing like saying things like whoa, yeah,
I don't think I can handle it. It's so cool.
How do you look so young? Like oh my god,
oh my god, thanks like you look. People need to
(32:10):
go to our Instagram to see how gorgeous Nicole is.
Anyway I put you know, I have a really great
moisturizer what to call perfect answer epiance. I love it anyway.
Good to know you look amazing. Love talking to you.
Thank you so much for coming on our show, and
(32:31):
hopefully we can talk to you again about your big
juicy secret about We would love to coming out. I
would love to be back on you know, whenever you
whenever you guys want me. Oh my gosh, like loved
you back then and everything you did, but like, couldn't
girl crush on you more right now? Honestly, thank you
to you some sweet to me. Everybody was like really
(32:56):
nice to me on that show too well. Big love,
big love to you. Bye to your brother and your sister,
and best wishes to your mom. Thank you, Thank you
so much. All right, take care, bye bye bye. Thanks
so much for coming on with us, Nicole, And that's
(33:16):
it for this week's episode. We will see you guys
later
