Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, and welcome to Morning Ron. It's Friday, April fourth.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
I'm Amy Robots and I am TJ. Holmes. Always appreciate
you running with us Morning Run guaranteed to be ready
and waiting for you at six thirty am Eastern time
every single day Friday. We have made it to Friday.
We have started our day. We have been blasting Disney
theme songs and it has been a great Morning Run.
Speaker 1 (00:32):
It actually has. It definitely was uplifting to sing along
and type along this morning. I had fun. Thank you
for putting that on.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
Yes, we needed to have a little fun because today, folks,
unfortunately the news ain't so great, especially with the stock market.
Tell you what's coming up on the Friday Morning Run.
Just skip checking on your fro one K today, all right,
the stock market plungees in its steepest decline we've seen
since the pandemic, thanks tariffs.
Speaker 1 (00:58):
And more so of your weather is weeping across the
country today and into the weekend. After already claiming at
least seven lives plus. Prince Harry finally addresses those accusations
from the chairwoman of his former charity sent to ballet
after the UK has announced an investigation into the charity.
Speaker 2 (01:15):
Also, President Trump is sending a strong message to schools
across the country drop all DEI or lose all federal funding. Also,
another controversial Trump nominee is confirmed. Doctor Memet Oz will
now be in charge of health coverage for nearly half
the country.
Speaker 1 (01:31):
And former Vice President Mike Pence will receive a prestigious
honor in Washington for his courage for defying his boss
President Trump, who by the way, called him a coward
and is snow White's less than anticipated success at the
box office messing it up for a new and previously
planned live action remake for my favorite Rapunzels Tangled.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Also this morning, a sweet moment to tell you about.
In Vegas, of all places, Tom Cruise took up pause
from promoting to honor his friend Val Kilmer. Will tell
you exactly what he said. I think we like a
lot of people. Yesterday spent a lot of time with
the TV on to a vow Kilmer movie. I think
Tombstone was the one we had going. We went with
Batman Forever later, but uh, you couldn't help it. Just
(02:16):
wanted to go check him out.
Speaker 1 (02:17):
Yeah, you had a steady stream of Kilmer movies on
in honor of him. All right, we're gonna begin the
big story today on this Friday morning run with the
stock markets. The headlines are unanimous and punishing. Global stock
markets buckled, cratered, plummeted, you picked the word, but they
were all negative. And this was all following President Trump's
(02:38):
big tariff announcement this week.
Speaker 2 (02:39):
Yeah, folks, we're seeing the times of declines we haven't
seen in years. Two point seven trillion dollars in market
value was lost on Thursday, one day. Two point seven
trillion dollars gone, biggest decline we have seen since the
pandemic that was in March of twenty twenty s and
P five hundred was down four percent. Now Jones down
three and a half percent, down nearly six percent.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
The markets all responding to Trump's announcement of that minimum
ten percent tariff on all US imports. But of course
that was just the starting point. Most countries are going
to see a lot bigger percentage points than that. Trump
announcing we will charge every country half the rate they
charge us. So that has caused countries around the world
to threaten hire retaliatory tariffs, which means we are in
(03:21):
the midst of a full blown international trade war.
Speaker 2 (03:24):
So President Trump was asked about this yesterday, and this
is what he told reporters. Quote, I think it's going
well end Quote. Yes, there was more. He damn sure,
better be more than that. He went on to say this,
the markets are going to boom, the stock is going
to boom, the country is going to boom, and the
rest of the world wants to see if there is
any way they can make a deal.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Wait, did you hear that last part, if they can
make a deal. Yeah, that's right. The President said he
is willing to make a deal, saying the tariffs give
the US great power to negotiate. Why is that such
a big deal that he just said that. Well, it's
the exact opposite of what White House officials were repeatedly
saying earlier in the day, insisting that Trump would not
(04:07):
negotiate or back off from the tariffs he announced this week.
Looks like anything and everything is up for grabs.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Now, well, yeah, it's unclear. So if it's unclear, that's
what investors, that's what the markets hate. Give us some
kind of certainty give us something to go with. So
the back and forth. Look, folks, he said this is
going to be painful for a little while. This is
absolutely painful for a lot of They are losing real
money as we speak. But he's claiming his plan is
going to pay off later. It might take us years
to see the results. However, we'll continue here on this
(04:36):
Friday morning. We turn now to this deadly and destructive
weather system. It continues to impact millions of Americans. It's
called a once in a generation storm. It's living up
to the name. Seven people have been confirmed killed from
the system that is sweeping across the country. It's going
to continue to recavoc into the weekend.
Speaker 1 (04:54):
That's right, Five people died in Tennessee, one in Indiana
and another in Missouri. Thirteen others have been injured, but
local officials say, especially the ones in Tennessee say, those numbers, unfortunately,
are likely to climb even higher.
Speaker 2 (05:06):
And so far we got to count of at least
thirty tornadoes in the South and Midwest. Rescuers have been
searching through rubble after several strong tornadoes demolished homes and buildings. Really,
this is one of those cases where we see neighborhoods
just wiped out.
Speaker 1 (05:19):
Yeah, the tornado threat unfortunately continues now today into the
weekend as the storm is moving eastward. But behind the
tornado threat is another danger heavy rain and the potential
for catastrophic flooding. Forecasters say another ten to fifteen inches
of rain could fall through Saturday night on areas that
have already been impacted, and that flooding risk will then
(05:41):
continue into next week. We said this yesterday on the podcast,
but I've just seen the same type of dire warnings
out there by meteorologists and weather forecasters saying people, please
pay attention to your local radar, to your local weather
reports because this is potentially deadly and detructive and just
(06:02):
everyone needs to be on alert.
Speaker 2 (06:03):
We have really appreciated our local weather folks here. We
have watched more local news specifically because weather in the
past several days. That's true, because of this system. We
continue here on this Friday morning run and Prince Harry
has finally spoken days after being accused of bullying, harassment
and sexism by the chairwoman of Senta Bale, the charity
that Prince Harry co founded in honor of his late mother.
(06:25):
Princess Diana.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
So after news at Senta Balia is now being investigated
by Britain's Charity Commission. That's a watchdog group that regulates
charities in England and Wales. Well, Prince Harry said he
was relieved. He wrote this on behalf of the former
trustees and patrons. We share in the relief that the
Charity Commission confirmed they will be conducting a robust inquiry.
(06:47):
We fully expect it will unveil the truth that collectively
forced us to resign.
Speaker 2 (06:52):
Yeah, forced two. He stepped down from the organization along
with its co founder and five other trustees after an
internal conflict with the chairwoman, Sophie Shandoka. Now she has
spent the last several days making multiple allegations against the
trustees and Prince Harry, including that she was the target
of the publicity machine of Megan Markel and Prince Hareic Woof.
Speaker 1 (07:13):
And so Prince Harry and other members of the trustees
released a statement saying what has transpired over the last
week has been heartbreaking to witness, especially when such blatant
lies hurt those who have invested decades in this shared goal.
Speaker 2 (07:28):
What is that goal?
Speaker 1 (07:29):
The mission of this charity actually began in two thousand
and six to honor Princess Diana to raise money to
help victims of the HIV pandemic in Lesotho. It's expanded
to Botswana. It includes aid to people affected by substance
abuse and gender based violence. This is a charity that's
doing very important work.
Speaker 2 (07:46):
Well, it's been around, like, yeah, twenty years. The honor
did this was an honor of his mother. I just
hate to see it going down like this right now.
But the investigation is going to look into whether the
charity's current and former trustees, including its chair have fulfilled
their duties and responsibilities under charity law. Now. The chairwoman
says she also welcomes the inquiry, saying she hoped it
would bring comfort to the people they serve that the
(08:08):
new board of trustees are acting appropriately.
Speaker 1 (08:12):
There is certainly more to come on that story, all right.
Next up on our run, the Trump administration is putting
schools across the country on notice ditch DEI or lose
your federal funding, and a letter sent to states, the
White House threatens to withhold the billions in federal state
education grantsate controls unless states promise they are adhering to
Trump's directives, the diversity, equity and inclusion programs.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Yes, that they need to be going away.
Speaker 1 (08:38):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
The letter he said to all the states has right
at the top. It says, this reminder of legal obligations
undertaken in exchange for receiving federal financial assistance. That's the
nice way of saying you have been warned that. The
letters to the states include a form to be filled
out that certifies that they are not using any DEI policies.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
And there is a timeline attached to this. States have
just ten days to respond. You may remember Trump signed
that executive order not long after taking office eliminating DEI
programs from the federal government.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
And as a reminder here, the federal government hands out
some eighteen billion dollars in the federal grants tied to
Title one money. We hear that all the time, but
this money is mainly set aside for lower income schools. Also,
this get hurt. I don't know how you prove they're
essentially signing an Affidavid saying I promise I'm not doing
any DEI. How do you investigate everybody? But the threat
(09:34):
of losing that kind of money is catastrophic. It could
be for a lot of places. We'll continue here on
this Friday morning run doctor Oz now officially the head
of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. Senace It
the Senate excuse Me confirmed memet Oz along party lines
fifty three to forty five, despite some intense questioning by
Democrats in the Senate Finance condec.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Most notably, doctor Oz would not say whether he supported
the proposed GOP to Medicaid that has been making many headlines,
but instead he said this to senators, Let's be aggressive
in modernizing our tools to reduce fraud, waste, and abuse.
This will stop unscrupleous people from stealing vulnerable Americans and
(10:15):
extend the life of the Medicare Trust Fund. So the
agency doctor Oz now runs provides coverage for seventy nine
million people on Medicaid sixty eight million people on Medicare.
It remains to be seen what he will do with
those cuts.
Speaker 2 (10:30):
All right, folk, stay with us here on this Friday morning.
Ron When we come back, we're gonna wrap it up
with our last few legs of running for the week,
including this story. The President called him a coward. The
Kennedys call him courageous. Also, what is with the beef
between two Disney princesses. Yes, Rapunzel is mad at snow White.
(10:52):
Also Tom Cruise with some sweet words were his former
on screen adversary Falclm. All right, we will continue here
on our Friday morning run with this. The crowd wanted
to hang him. The President called him a coward. Mike
(11:14):
Pence is now being called courageous and being honored for
what he did on that infamous January sixth day. Pence
will receive the John F. Kennedy Profile Encourage Awards specifically
for his refusal to do what Trump wanted him to do,
not certify the twenty twenty election results, something of course,
he was constitutionally obligated to do so.
Speaker 1 (11:34):
The JFK Library Foundation, in making the announcement, said, Pence
put his life and career on the line to ensure
the constitutional transfer of presidential power on January sixth, twenty
twenty one. You'll remember, yes, Trump pressured Pence to hold
up certification, claiming there was voting fraud in some states.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
So while the mob was assaulting the Capitol, Pence was
literally on the run and in hiding inside that building,
refused even the Secret Service recommendation that he leave the building.
So now he's getting this award. It's going to happen
in a ceremony that's going to be May fourth. That's
a Sunday in Boston. I don't know why I added that.
I just happened to know.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
That's a it's a Sunday, all right, May the fourth
be with you. The Kennedy Foundation wrote that Pence's decision
is an example of President Kennedy's belief that an act
of political courage can change the course of history. And
this is a ward that's been given out since nineteen
eighty nine, recognized many public officials, including President Obama, first
(12:34):
President Bush, Gabby Gifford's, Mitt Romney, Nancy Pelosi. So Mike
Pence will be added to a very esteemed list of
public services.
Speaker 2 (12:41):
Looking forward to his speech, wonder what he's going to
say in the midst of that. You got Trump back
in the White House, and now he is being honored
for doing his duty, which is something. Doing his duty
is what Trump called him a coward for. So I'm
interesting to hear. We're kind of speeches.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
You can't wait to hear that speach?
Speaker 2 (12:57):
All right? Well, next up here on the wrong O,
why might be messing things up for Rapunzel. Disney is
reportedly having second thoughts about doing a live action version
of its twenty ten animated hit and Robot's Favorite Tangled.
Speaker 1 (13:13):
Absolute favorite Disney movie ever. Love the movie, love the
music now.
Speaker 2 (13:17):
According to Ward to this.
Speaker 1 (13:18):
I was yes. According to multiple media reports, Disney has
now paused development of the movie, which already had a
director and a writer attached to the project. And the
news comes yes after a less than stellar critical and
commercial reception for snow White. That's a very kind way
to put it.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Yeah, we don't know for sure these two things are connected,
but yes, the live action version of snow White was
released two weeks ago. You've been hearing plenty about it,
all the controversy I has been plagued, and that it
opened to a disappointing forty five million dollars in the US,
made a total of almost one hundred and fifty million
dollars worldwide. That ain't good against an estimated budget of
two hundred and fifty plus million dollars before all the
(14:00):
the advertising and promotional cost. So this is you got
numbers out there in estimates, this is going to be
a nine a pretty significant nine figure loss. It is.
Speaker 1 (14:10):
They're in the red significantly. So it's unclear, yes, if
Disney is simply rethinking the direction of a live action
Tangled or if it's ditching the project altogether. Disney does
have a live action Lee, Lo and Stitch coming out
next month. A live action Moana is scheduled for a
twenty twenty six release. And by the way, just Isn't
just Me Who Love Tangled? The animated Tangled film made
(14:33):
six hundred million dollars at the box office and gave
us the Oscar nominated song it should have won. I
See the Light, which I play at nauseum that the
and at last I See the Light. No that you're
thinking of Hercules, Go the Distance.
Speaker 2 (14:48):
Go the Distance, Yes, but Bolton does a version of
that one.
Speaker 1 (14:51):
I love that one. But I See the Light.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
Yes.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
Zachary Levi, we just talked to him on the podcast.
He is there with Mandy Moore. They sing I See
the Light and it's a good one.
Speaker 2 (14:59):
So been blaring some of these songs, and look, we
encourage you all to do. So whatever's going on in
your life, take a beat. Listen to a couple of
Disney song. I cannot believe you promoting this, but listen
to a couple of Disney songs. They really got us going.
This one.
Speaker 1 (15:12):
It's moodlifting.
Speaker 2 (15:13):
It absolutely is that a final legt of our Friday
run now, and Tom Cruise had some sweet words for
his friend and Top Gun co star Val Kilmer. Cruz
was in Vegas yesterday for a previously scheduled appearance at
CinemaCon As, an annual convention of movie theater owners.
Speaker 1 (15:30):
He was there to promote the upcoming installment of Mission Impossible,
but before he got into his remarks about the movie,
he asked for a moment of silence for Kilmer, who
died Tuesday at the age of sixty five.
Speaker 2 (15:42):
And then Tom Cruise said this quote, I'd like to
honor a dear friend of mine, Val Kilmer. I can't
tell you how much I admire his work, how grateful
and honored I was when he joined Top Gun and
came back later for Top Gun Maverick. He loved movies
and he gave a lot to all of us. Just
kind of think about all the wonderful times that we
had with him, And then He closed by saying, I
(16:04):
wish you well in the next journey talking to Val Kilmer,
so sweet air. I guess we were a lot of
us waiting to hear. They will forever be tied in
cinema history together because of Top Gun. And we're talking
about we were watching Valkilmer movies yesterday. That was the one.
The last one we had on was Top Gun.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Yeah, it was very cool. He did so cool. Oh
in the original, Yes he was. He was too cool
for school in every way. Those frosted tips on his hair, Yeah,
he was cool.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
All right, Before you go about your day, we've already
given you a recommendation for some songs you need to
be listening to. But something else we want you to
take with you on this Friday. It is our quote
of the day.
Speaker 1 (16:41):
What lies behind us and what lies before us are
tiny matters compared to what lies within us. I love that.
That's from Ralph Waldo Emerson, famed poet, writer, author. He
has a lot of great motivational quotes, but this one
spoke to me today.
Speaker 2 (16:59):
Folks. It lies behind us and what lies before us
are tiny matters compared to what lies within us. And
with that, folks, we appreciate you putting in some runs
with us this week. Okay, sorry, I made it through
the whole episode without comming, and now we're wrapping it
up and I'm struggling.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
I maybe Robot, have a wonderful Friday and an even
better weekend, and we'll see you on the run on Monday.
