Speaker 1 (00:01):
And that's what you really missed with Jenna.

Speaker 2 (00:04):
And Kevin and iHeartRadio podcast.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
Welcome to you, and that's what you really miss podcasts.
Very exciting episode, Kevin. We are doing Glee TikTok trends.
I'm really looking forward to this, partially because I don't
know TikTok trends. So you guys keep me young and
fresh and like I'm not like a I'm a cool mom.

(00:33):
I feel like I got Wow. I'm tickled by this
these trends, and I'm tickled by the information that I've
seen recently.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Here's what we're going to do today. We're going to
do a little inspired by this TikTok trend started by
doing the shout out to Brazil of the top five
Glee performances that give me physical pain. And then we're
gonna do Glee covers that are better than the original.

(01:07):
This is tough, and we have some of our favorite
guests with the you know are the fans and friends
fan friends that have their opinions, and we have some
voice notes, we have some internet polling. This is all
gonna be great. We're going to talk about it all.

Speaker 1 (01:22):
And we have some strong opinions here in this room,
So let's go for it, okay, Kevin.

Speaker 2 (01:28):
So the thing that started this originally the trend on
TikTok for top five Glee performances that give me physical pain.
That list goes as follows. Number five, Let's have a
Kiki turkey lurkey time four, tell me something good m
hm three Gungham style mm hmmm.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
Two touch a touch a touch me interesting. Number one
the Fox, Kevin, do you feel validated? Here's I feel scene,
I feel seen.

Speaker 2 (02:09):
I also feel conflicted because do you I now like
let's have a geeky turkey larkey.

Speaker 1 (02:15):
Oh no, for sure, I definitely like it. Let's have that.
Actually I have to disagree with I also have to
disagree with touch a touch to touch me. I don't
love that number, but I also don't hate that much.
I love touch a touch it touched me. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (02:30):
I think it is such well done. I think it
is so well done. I think it is great.

Speaker 1 (02:36):
On the hallway, like it's just so good window. Yes,
love and Jaima just like James so good in it. Yeah,
I don't know, I don't know. I that's an interesting one.
It makes sense.

Speaker 2 (02:51):
It sticks out to me because it's in context with
Rocky Horror, so like it.

Speaker 1 (02:56):
All for sure? For sure. I think that's part of
this is like if you're missing context, like if you
haven't seen your picture show or if you like, I
don't know. It just feels like there's circumstances that make
this make sense. This makes sense to be on the list,

(03:18):
but also like why we disagree the other one. There's
some others that like have been floating around the internet
obviously as we've gone through these seasons, and we have
a list, So now I have a question. Yeah, yeah,

(03:38):
I knew you were gonna make fun of that anyway
as it came out.

Speaker 2 (03:44):
Now when we see I need a definition here on
physical pain right now, are we saying because it makes
you uncomfortable because it's bad, or are we saying it
makes you uncomfortable causes pain because it's just uncomfortable, which
is the point, right, So, like for example, push It
is on here. I think push.

Speaker 3 (04:04):
It is one of our best.

Speaker 2 (04:06):
Number phenomenal ah, but I understand it making a viewer
uncomfortable because it's orally sex up kids.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
It's also supposed to be ridiculous and uncomfortable in the show,
like we knew we were what we were doing, like
the Glee Club, as our characters didn't know that this
was going to be offensive, but like we knew this
is supposed to be offensive, right, So there's I think,
like this is a good question because like another one

(04:34):
that's on this list is with You I'm Born Again,
which as actors we knew what this the purpose of
this was, and in the characters supposed to not think that,
but also we know that it's supposed to be offensive
and painful. I don't know, do you.

Speaker 4 (04:54):
Know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (04:54):
Am I making sense? Yeah?

Speaker 2 (04:56):
Well, the other thing here, I'm looking at some of
these other songs that folid around the internet in this
category here, and some of these are also just like sad.
So I think physical pain is a number of things.

Speaker 1 (05:10):
Yes, could be physical because you're sad, because you're physical,
because you're uncomfortable. Could be physical because it's inappropriate.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
I mean, don't stand so close to me a young girl,
totally inappropriate, uncomfortable. But gold Digger, no, it's fine.

Speaker 1 (05:27):
It's just you know, there's that running joke of like
mister True rapping all the time. I guess you're right.
There's another one on here, is you're having my baby.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
Now, that does make me uncomfortable, but that's actually funny.

Speaker 1 (05:49):
It's so funny though. I think that's the thing, is
like these tiggle me, but also like they are uncomfortable.

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Oh no, you're having my baby. I had to fight
when we recap that I had not fast forwarding through
it because I was so uncomfortab comfortable. But I think
that's the testament obviously to everybody involved in making that scene.

Speaker 1 (06:08):
Yes, exactly, exactly. Also like, okay, this one for sure, Lakukaratra.
Oh you know, just offensive racist, Yes, thong song. Oh,
that's on. That's one of my picks for definitely list.
My other one on my on my list is blurred lines.

Speaker 2 (06:28):
Oh yeah, weird just so yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
There's a couple of other ones on here on the
flown around the internet list Baby got Back.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
Yeah, you know Baby Got Back did make me uncomfortable.

Speaker 1 (06:48):
Did it?

Speaker 2 (06:49):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (06:50):
A little less conversation was in the Spanish teacher. I
have to agree with that one. That one's also on
my list. Yes, I actually don't think about it because no,
it's breeze uncomfortable rights that's right, right, right, And yeah,
so I think those are like a few of the
ones that flowed and again you're right, like they do

(07:14):
have a range of emotions in making us uncomfortable or
making our us feel physical pain. I want to sex
you up. Yeah. On my list, there's.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Some honorable mentions here for like people said Starships with
the lyric change, oh right, some people.

Speaker 1 (07:30):
Toxics the season two version of Toxic correct Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, Okay.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
It's like when will sort of yeah, it does things
with the kids, it's a little strange. Yeah yeah yeah yeah,
and it makes people uncomfortable. Shockingly, Gungham style would not
be my top five, top six. I was saying just
for me, because I think you perform it really well.
It's not awkward to watch you perform it.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
It's nice. Okay, okay, so interesting, Okay, Well, we asked
some of our fan friends to high end, so let's
hear what some of our wonderful friends have to say.
Let's start with DJ Bob.

Speaker 5 (08:10):
Now, this one I really had to think about because
I like a lot of them, but there are two
that I whenever I watched the herey, I need to
listen to the original two get a palate cling here.

(08:35):
What I like about the original. So one of them
is just.

Speaker 6 (08:45):
I'm just gonna say this. I'm an indie music freak,
so I knew be okay before it was featured ugly
he knows everything, and I out there thinking, okay, why
is this happening? Yeah?

Speaker 1 (09:10):
Wow, then like.

Speaker 6 (09:13):
I've heard this, I've heard this one before on the
pod I Have Nothing, Chris. It's a talented vocalist, but again,
daunting material.

Speaker 1 (09:30):
Yep, not wrong.

Speaker 6 (09:33):
It's like I understand, but sometimes not wrong. It doesn't
really fit for a word. I'm sure there's more. Go
together first too. That came in my head. Thank you
for having me.

Speaker 2 (09:53):
Thank you very good, Bob.

Speaker 1 (09:56):
That was very good.

Speaker 2 (09:58):
I mean doing I Have Nothing is a setup. It's
just a setup for anybody for hire.

Speaker 1 (10:03):
Yeah. Failed, but like no, no, I would.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
Not touch well no, that's just not fair. It is
like one of the hardest songs to sing.

Speaker 1 (10:12):
By one of the most iconic vocalists ever, like you
just don't Yeah okay. Ian and Lena from Recovering Gleek
Podcasts also voiced in, so let's let's hear what they
have to say.

Speaker 7 (10:24):
Hey, everyone, it's Lena and Ian from my covering Cleek.

Speaker 8 (10:29):
And these are the five Glee songs that make give
me physical pain when I watched them up. First, we
got from previously unaired Christmas special the Chipmunk Song. Watching
three adults try to seduce a stranger by singing a
children's novelty song was crazy and I would love to

(10:51):
forget about it.

Speaker 7 (10:51):
I'm trying to scrub my eyes every.

Speaker 8 (10:54):
Secondly, we have the Thong song. It just doesn't work
for me. This doesn't work. Thirdly, I Love You Clayane Candles,
a breakup song that is used as them coming together
becoming a couple.

Speaker 7 (11:10):
It's just a choice.

Speaker 8 (11:11):
It's just an awkward number through and through. Fourth, I
love Mike Lee, Boys, Rain and Spain, Huge Miss I
do Henry Higgins. They are not And finally Beth from Theatricalities. Yes,
it's a good cover and that they sound lovely, but

(11:36):
the plot behind this song is Puck wants to name
their daughter Beth, based on this song about a man
singing to his wife Beth about how he doesn't have
time for her because he would rather hang with the boys. Beth,
you deserve better, Puck, What are you thinking? Why would

(11:56):
you name your daughter after that song?

Speaker 7 (11:58):
I love that find not. I think those are all great,
great picks. Thank you so much, thanks for having us,
Love you guys.

Speaker 9 (12:05):
Bye Bye Bye.

Speaker 1 (12:06):
Beth is a great r really good one. Yeah. Also
Chipmunk song, really good one. These are great. They were
really spot on. Phong song obviously also there and Candles interesting.
I didn't even think about the one, probably because I
blocked it from my memory. It's not like my worst

(12:27):
I don't hate it. I didn't. I don't think we
hated it when we watched it, but like also not
one of our strongest.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
So next up we have Alexa aka Alarti's number one
defense attorney. So let's see what she has to say.

Speaker 10 (12:47):
Hello Alexa again here with performances that caused me physical pain.
I am going to say that some of these are
a little bit more basic than takes that I usually
to the table. However, I think that they still get
the job done, starting off strong with roots before Branches.

(13:07):
I think that every single time I watched this episode,
every single time I listened to the song watch the performance,
like just tears, Like I'm always breaking down in tears
over this. I was in fifth grade when this episode
aired for the first time, and obviously when you're that age,
everything feels a lot deeper than it actually is. So

(13:28):
I remember being like, oh my god, Finn and Rigel
are breaking up. They were supposed to get married. This
was the worst day of my life. But also like,
I can appreciate the fact that Lea Michelle is just
singing down, acting down. Also, the night before I graduated college,
all of my friends and I watched a handful of
Glee episodes and this was the last one that we watched,
and obviously for it to end with Roots before Branches,

(13:51):
we were all just like inconsolable together. And so I
always think about that when I think of this song now,
and it always just causes me pain.

Speaker 11 (14:01):
For sure.

Speaker 10 (14:02):
The next one that I have is a little bit
more basic, a little bit more on the nose, but
I still haven't found what I'm looking for.

Speaker 3 (14:10):
Great song, one of my favorite.

Speaker 10 (14:12):
Songs of all time, like the YouTube version, the Glee version,
the Jonas Brothers singing it live version, Like I am
streaming every single version of this song all the time,
but obviously something so special about this one, with the
Finn scenes cut in and the tribute of it all
just really makes it a little bit extra special. And
it was definitely like unexpected as a viewer to watch

(14:34):
it and see that that was.

Speaker 12 (14:35):
How it was going to be edited. So painful, to
say the least. My next one that I have another bit,
it's a little bit basic mine Britanna breakup.

Speaker 3 (14:47):
You just anybody who.

Speaker 10 (14:49):
Ever shipped Britanna, you don't think that they would ever
break up, especially not like this. But like, it's hard
not to appreciate the song when Nya is just.

Speaker 3 (14:59):
Singing the sh the song, acting this song.

Speaker 10 (15:02):
She's so freaking talented that it's just like I have
to continue to stream it, like I'm gonna cry, But
there's something like so magnetic about her performance that it's
just I'm so drawn to it, even though it is
again causing me physical pain. The next one that I
have definitely a deep cut, definitely a little niche to me,

(15:24):
But who am I if I'm not going to bring
Artie into something, And you know what, if Artie's in pain,
then I'm in pain. So I'm gonna go with dream
a little dream of me. Just the direction of this
whole scene, the blocking of it, the camera angles so good.
There is that shot where it's Artie's side profile and

(15:45):
Kevin is just singing his face off, and you can
see in the background Tina and Mike dancing together, and
you can see on Artie's little face how sad he
is that he's not the one dancing with Tina.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
And then Quinn like reaches over and touches his.

Speaker 10 (15:58):
Shoulder, and I like, love lose my mind every single time,
but causing me physical pain. But you know what, Quentnin, Artie,
they caused me physical happiness.

Speaker 1 (16:07):
So I liked a sad route. No, this is a
totally different interpretation that physically ill and I appreciate it
because now we're getting into like favorites, you know what
I mean, We're in like some of our favorites. I
still haven't found what I'm looking for mine like dream
wont dream. Yeah, but they cause deep emotional pain. I'm
into it. I'm into it. Thank you, thank you, and Lexa.

Speaker 2 (16:31):
Let's hear Andrew from Gleek of the Week.

Speaker 13 (16:35):
Andrew MacGuire from Gleek to Week podcast. I'm here to
provide five performances from the hip Fox show Glee Cause
Me Physical Pain Number one with a bullet rain and spain.
The Gleek casts. You know y'all provide a lot of
songs that you put a spin on the original in
a really fun way. Y'all put a spin on Rain

(16:57):
and Spain in a way that like made it so
much worse, and I'm not blaming it on obviously, y'all
in particular, guys provided a lot of really great ones.
This was the number one stinker in my book. I'm
so sorry, Randon Spain, you were the weakest link. Next
up is a little less conversation. The mister shoe hate

(17:18):
kind of is warranted with that one. I have nothing
and I have nothing more to say. Next up, Friday,
I'm in Love. You haven't listened to it yet, Friday
in Love, Friday, I Am not in love, Friday We're
breaking up? And then number five kind of an odd
bad choice, but the most wonderful day of the year.

(17:38):
Just full on cringe. I'm so sorry. I really it's
really really bad.

Speaker 1 (17:44):
I'm so sorry, Okay, Andrew raindon Stain making a dual
appearance is so interesting to me because it's not what
I had imagined or thought. People would say, I forget
that song exists, ye show, Yeah, I guess so. Frida,
I'm in love, I don't know what's Friday?

Speaker 2 (18:06):
Is that season six?

Speaker 1 (18:07):
Yes, it's season six, so.

Speaker 2 (18:08):
We have that to look forward to.

Speaker 4 (18:09):
That.

Speaker 1 (18:10):
Yeah, Andrew, Thanks Andrew. A little less conversation. Obviously we've
spoken of I will never speak of it ever again.
And okay, this is yeah, this fel is right. Although
I don't know that I agree with the most wonderful
time of the year because I really enjoy hearing Kevin do.

Speaker 7 (18:27):
That number, won't.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
I don't mind that I didn't think of it like that.
But thank you Andrew for your honesty.

Speaker 2 (18:43):
Yeah, I appreciate it. Whatever. Okay, let's do Emily.

Speaker 11 (18:49):
My cringiest moment anytime I do a Glee rewatch. It's
always your habit, my baby, it is so hard to watch. Oh,
it just hurts my soul. Another one is what does
the fox say? Pretty obvious? Another one that it does
not really do it for me. I've got two Will solos.

(19:09):
The first one is the song song just is it's
just really gochy. And then when he sings to Sue
tell me something good. I mean, Matthew Morrison has a
wonderful voice. But those two does hurt from me. And
then this one might be a surprise because it's kind

(19:30):
of a hot take. But when Lee did Superstition, that
song for me did not hit Amber Riley Gray vocal
perfect song for her, Darren Chris sounds great, but having
Marley be the soloist and she's like the focus, like

(19:51):
we're gonna work on your vocals on this, and I'm like,
you've got a unique right there, And why why is
this the stop? I don't know. It just something didn't
feel right. And I know it was a hard time
during the show in real life, so I don't know.
It just never really clicked for me. So that song
and that scene is always a skit.

Speaker 1 (20:12):
I get it, Thanks Emily. I honestly, Superstition, I get it.
It was like the episode and the like the circumstances
encompassing like all of it.

Speaker 2 (20:20):
Yes, thank you, Emily. Those are some great takes.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Okay, We've got a few more Anna.

Speaker 4 (20:25):
Five performances that caused me physical pain, blurred lines, Come on?

Speaker 1 (20:30):
No?

Speaker 4 (20:30):
Why why? Ryan Murphy? Why speaking? Why? Why did I
ever leave Ohio? Oh? It made my bumb clench. I'm
so sorry that third roguely the a cappella version of
He's a Jolly Good Fellow that they sing in a
capella's when they're.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
Like, that's a good guys.

Speaker 4 (20:52):
No, that calls me pain. Maybe this is unpopular, but
sing it for the world, I just yeah, it just
made me square. I'm sorry, such a hater. And finally
the Christmas Chipmunk song, I can't remember which one it was,
but it did hurt hurt my soul. I think, yeah,

(21:14):
I think I hurt my soul. Such a hater. But
you know I still listened to them.

Speaker 2 (21:20):
You know, I agree with about seeing it for the world.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
I have to agree too, and not that I like, yeah, no, I.

Speaker 2 (21:30):
Agree, Yeah, I agree, And we did do it on tour, like, yeah, I'm.

Speaker 1 (21:35):
Jal a good fellow too, I feel I was like
that was a good find for sure. Thank you. Anna
Sharene wrote in and said this is hard because I
literally love all the Glee covers. I'd rather listen to
the Glee cover instead of the og. But here's a
few of there's You're having my Baby push It rock
Lobster blurred lines, and I'll stand by you and I'll

(21:59):
see I'm you both versons because they both cause heartache.

Speaker 2 (22:03):
Oh yeah, that's the biggest heartache to me on the show.

Speaker 1 (22:05):
I'll stand by you. Yes, yes, we know this, we
know this. Blurredlines seems to be a fan favorite, and
you're having my baby.

Speaker 2 (22:14):
Sure, yeah, I think those are the two song is
up there.

Speaker 1 (22:26):
Okay, we're moving on to a different section of this
episode now, and it's the same idea. But this is
the gleek cover that is better than the original. And
this was inspired by many, many, many tiktoks. There's a
ton out there. There's a recent one that says that
Darren Chris's cough Syrup is actually better than the original,

(22:51):
which was said by Jessy. Forgive me if I'm saying
that wrong on your name on TikTok, but I get that,
and obviously we talked to Samir on the show and
we mentioned that, and he's not offended when people say that.
I don't agree with that one. I think Daren's is

(23:13):
just as good, if not the same excellence as Samir's,
but I don't agree that it's better just because, like
obviously we're like huge Sair vocal fans here.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
I have the same thing I have with Samir's voice
and Darren's cover of it. I have with I know
Valerie is going to be mentioned a lot, and you know,
we are hardcore Naya fans, but yeah, I think her
Valerie is just as good as Amuline Houses exactly, but

(23:45):
I could never say that it's better. I totally you're
an Amu wine House have such distinctive voices that.

Speaker 1 (23:52):
Are so good and yes, I like iconic. Okay. Claudia
Ashrey came on the podcast a few months ago and
she shared her list and she said, my man performed
by Leah. Again, it's like these massive towerhouses that you're
trying to compare these people too. I would say Leah's
is as good as Strip Barbara's, but like, I don't

(24:14):
know that I can say that either fat bottom girls
before remark or Queen like again Queen, Like, I don't know,
this is really just going to be for me. Yeah
yeah Yeahrcury, no, I know. And Landslide. You also can't
touch Fleetwood like I obviously it's Gwyneth, Naya and Heather,
but like I can't. I just can't pay it out loud.

Speaker 2 (24:35):
But if we're doing it's like a cover of the
Chicks cover and and that way, Oh right, I think
it's just as good for sure. Also, it's hard for
us to be like, yeah, the Glee version.

Speaker 1 (24:51):
We're in a particular.

Speaker 2 (24:52):
Situation somewhere only we know that darn does performed by Keen. Look,
that's not the lead singer of Key is also one
of my favorite male.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Vocalists and one of my This is one of my
favorite songs of all time.

Speaker 2 (25:06):
So it's really hard.

Speaker 1 (25:07):
I can't not saying Darren isn't a great singer Russell
that his version was not excellent. I just can't. I
just can't. Then another one that floats around is I'm
not going to teach your boyfriend how to Dance with You,
which is a weird like a sleeper hit. Like, I
feel like a lot of our fans that we've had
on the show have come out and said, like, I

(25:27):
really love this.

Speaker 2 (25:28):
Number, and I agree. I think I know you love
this number, but I think this is better than the
original I do. Wow, there's something about Darren's voice on
this type of music that really gets me.

Speaker 1 (25:45):
What about blame it on the alcohol, Kevin.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
No, there's no way. I know. I appreciate the love
for all of us that are on this song, but
I don't.

Speaker 1 (25:58):
Think that's better than I That's a hard one for me.

Speaker 2 (26:04):
Yeah, I don't know.

Speaker 1 (26:07):
Another one is a smooth Criminal. Okay, now we're talking,
we're touching, Michael. But it's so different. It's so different
with two cello's featured and like the two of them
that like I might say this one is this version
is it's kind of like the Chicks cover on the cover,

(26:30):
you know, like it's really good. I'd say it might
be better, but not better than Michael's version, because like
how you say it, right, I think it's a really
good version.

Speaker 2 (26:41):
Yeah, yeah, rocking up the wrong tree with me. You're
not getting close. I know, Michael, and I think the
performance is really cool. Like I think it's really special
in the episode. I do think it's one of the
best covers we've ever done.

Speaker 1 (26:53):
But yeah, I have two that I that are in
this on this list that I do agree with in
a row consecutively. Teenage Dream WHOA. I do think that
Darren's is better, really mm hmmm, I do.

Speaker 2 (27:12):
I think I think it's really special. Like I don't
want to, I don't want anybody to get it twisted
that I don't love it. I think it's really special
and it was such a moment.

Speaker 1 (27:25):
M hmm. But I think teenage Dream is like pop perfection,
that is true, that is true, like Katie's It's perfect.
I know it's tough. Okay. Here's another one might be
a hot take too, Jesse's Girl. There's something about Corey's

(27:53):
voice on this, like Darren, I'm not going to dance
with you that like I hear that. I find it's
like it's like butter to me, like I, I will
turn this version on more than I will turn on Rix.

Speaker 2 (28:08):
Sorry, Rick, Yeah, no, I I do understand that.

Speaker 1 (28:12):
Mm hmm. Another one that's there's a couple of other
ones that are thrown on here that I didn't agree with,
but I I will name them, name them. It's all
of us, just us, just not agreeing with anything. Be
giuse you, how forget you? The Scientist also can't touch
Coldplay for now.

Speaker 2 (28:33):
The Scientist is one of my favorite songs of all time.

Speaker 1 (28:35):
We Are Young.

Speaker 6 (28:38):
M hmm.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
That one, just as just as you know what Nate's
voice from Fun is so distinctive. It's like when growing
up watching American Idol and anyone would cover Fallen by
Alicia Keys. It would happen all the time, and all
the judges would be like, don't do it.

Speaker 1 (28:57):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (28:58):
Yeah, their voice. Her voice is so specific.

Speaker 1 (29:01):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (29:02):
Where I think this is a tie because Nate's voice
is so specific. No one can recreate what he does
and it works perfectly with the music he makes.

Speaker 1 (29:15):
Mm hmmm.

Speaker 2 (29:16):
But I do like because it is a different vocal style.
I like our version a lot.

Speaker 1 (29:22):
No, totally agree that. Is it a good point somebody
to love?

Speaker 2 (29:29):
No, I'm sorry, No, I love our version. I absolutely
love it.

Speaker 1 (29:33):
Okay, Mine I think is old.

Speaker 4 (29:39):
No.

Speaker 1 (29:39):
No, I'm actually terrified to say this.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
If you want to say this, actually, don't you know what.

Speaker 1 (29:45):
I'm not gonna say anything at all. I don't know
I'm going to say it. No, don't do it.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
Mine is an incredible song, Taylor's The original version of
Mine is an incredible version of that song. Additionally, NYA
is saying the shit out of it, and also in

(30:16):
context with the show, it's like it's just a vocal
powerhouse performance.

Speaker 1 (30:23):
It's also one of the best number, one of the
best numbers that we've done on the show period.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
Yes, and I think for me it is better than
the original.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
Oh my god, I don't think I can say it.
I think I can say it.

Speaker 2 (30:39):
I'm a Taylor fan. Oh no, I'm a huge so
that's not any dig on her is vocal on it
is insane. Here's another one, faithfully, no I do Oh god,
I don't even know what to say. I love both.

(31:01):
I get chills from both.

Speaker 1 (31:02):
I know. I honestly think it's such a good.

Speaker 2 (31:06):
Song because Leah can hit that, just like Steve Perry
can hit it. Yes, yes, yes, it's I think it's
more about if you're a competent enough vocalist, more than competent,
that is such a hard song like in the best
of your Yes, if you are at the top of
your game like Lea and Steve Perry. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
then there's something about that melody.

Speaker 1 (31:27):
Yes, it's a song itself exactly that will take you there. Yeah, yes, agreed, agreed.
I also think I'm having a tough time with this one, Kevin,
I'm having a really tough time with this one. I
want to know, Gloria, Oh, I'm having a really tough

(31:50):
time with this because I was like, oh no, the
Glee cast for sure, and before this I clicked on
the original Yeah, and it's special, so good, I thought,
I don't know now again, it's one of those songs
that like the Hulk is like or the melody is
really good that I don't know.

Speaker 2 (32:14):
I think it's a tie because again for me, it
is her voice.

Speaker 9 (32:19):
Is so.

Speaker 1 (32:21):
Perfect for that song. Yeah, yeah, and then away we
did it. In the production of this one was like
really good. But Laura Brownigan's like, I don't know, I
don't know a tie. We'll call it tie Mustang Sally.
Somebody said, wow, Noah has one of the best voices. Ugly,
We've said this one of those voices I've ever heard,

(32:42):
like really excellent. Also, but like, I don't know, that's
a tough one. I don't think I want to I
don't think I want to contest that one. Check it out. Yes, no,
I don't know. You can't touch Florence.

Speaker 2 (32:58):
Yes, can't touch.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
Yes, you're wrong? Whoa people love shake it out. I
know this, But okay, I want to bring up dog
Days too, though, wow, we can't touch dog Days. Dog
Days is one of Florence's best song.

Speaker 2 (33:15):
But I think for me what I like to listen to.
I love your version of dog Days. It's just right
underneath Florence's like right underneath it. My favorite part of
the entire touring experience was sitting behind that scrim and
watching you two go out and start that song. It

(33:35):
was the best feeling. That song is so good, Like
Florence is a freak. That song is so good, and
both of your voices on it are like just so
pure and angelic. I have goosebumps thinking about it. I
honestly would, no matter how tired I was, no matter
what city we were in, that song would start, and
you know how I was, Like all the lights would
go out and it was spotlight, and it would it

(33:57):
would feel like I was being coddled in my mother's bosom,
you know, like it was. But Shakeout, shake it Out
is better.

Speaker 1 (34:08):
Yeah, Shakeout is not better than that.

Speaker 2 (34:10):
I'm saying Shakeout is better than Florence's version.

Speaker 1 (34:12):
No, no, I know, but it's also different than Florence's Virgin,
Like it's a totally different kind of cover like we
do on Glee Ward and it's like not a carbon
copy of the original, and like and I'm just.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
A sucker for my girls' voice.

Speaker 1 (34:25):
No, no, no, I get it, and I just like
I also it's again, it's like tough for me to
say something like that. Also because I'm on that song Riverdeep,
Mountain High. Okay, I don't know how to say this,
I don't know how to do this, Just do it.
I love Tina Turner, I love I love. Do you

(34:50):
think this is better? But nobody's touching eye and amber
on this? You know what? I think you're right. This
is one of her favorite numbers, hands down ever of
Ongle like there's so many memories attached her, but then
like the song itself is just so good. The vocals onitors.
They were running on that stage, singing, like physically running

(35:14):
and then physically and then vocally running and wailing, and
it was oh okay. I also, yeah, I agree with you.

Speaker 2 (35:26):
I also want to say nut Bush Kevin because I
think this is nia a sweet spot.

Speaker 1 (35:34):
Yes, I agree, agreed, agreed. Tina is a rock star,
rock star, no doubt about it. Naya's voice was more
R and B or something about it.

Speaker 2 (35:48):
She sings it very differently than Tina. Yeah, so they coexist,
They're very different.

Speaker 1 (35:53):
But I I know I'm absolutely biased, said now, but
I love Nasty Red the Nation. No, No, I don't
think I agree with that, but I will tell you
know how much we love Nasty Red Nation version.

Speaker 2 (36:12):
But Jacob's cover of.

Speaker 1 (36:15):
Let Me Love You, let Me Love You? Yes, yes, yes, yes,
absolutely big yes, yes. That's a missed one on and
that did not come up on our list.

Speaker 2 (36:27):
You know what's another missed one? True Colors.

Speaker 1 (36:31):
No, kidd yeah, no, you cannot touch.

Speaker 2 (36:35):
Cyndi Lapper again. She's so incredible, unique, unique, Not a vocalist.
You're a vocalist, and you sing this out of that song.
I mean, look at this is maybe an extreme comparison,
but look at I Will Always Love You, right, mm hmm.
You have Dolly Pardon, who is right, right, right, a

(36:56):
great singer, writes for her voice and one of the
best songwriters all time. Right, and you have Whitney Houston
sing the same song, and you see True Colors. Wow, Kevin,
you put your voice on you have.

Speaker 1 (37:09):
It's very nice. She has the range. Thinks it's very nice.
Also like good references. I mean, I like this, I
like this a lot. Well, that's very kind.

Speaker 2 (37:20):
I also think our cover of Losers Like Me from
the hundredth episode is better than the original Loser Like Me.

Speaker 1 (37:30):
I'm gonna leave it there. I'm gonna leave it there.
Some of our fan friends came back returned for also
this one. So let's let's kick it to Ian and
Lena from Recovering Leek and hear what they have to say.

Speaker 7 (37:51):
Hey, everyone, it's Lena and Ian from Recovering Gleek.

Speaker 8 (37:55):
And here's our five Gleek covers that we think are
better than the originals.

Speaker 14 (38:00):
I'll go first, Okay, number one, in no particular order.
I have Laban on the alcohol, obviously, and then I
have when I get you alone, obviously, and then I
have four minutes.

Speaker 7 (38:14):
Obviously, oh my god. And then I have shaken out
mm hmm.

Speaker 14 (38:21):
Then I have obviously I'm not gonna teach your boyfriend
how to dance with you?

Speaker 1 (38:25):
Wow? Obviously?

Speaker 7 (38:27):
Of course? Yeah, what are yours?

Speaker 1 (38:29):
All?

Speaker 7 (38:29):
Right?

Speaker 8 (38:30):
So my favorite Glee songs are mashups, but I didn't
put a single mash up because I feel like that's
a different entity than just like a cover that's better
than the original. So the five that I think are
better than the original are Valerie, Shout Out, Okay, Smooth Criminal,
the Cello Herd around the World. Oh, of course, love Song.

Speaker 7 (38:50):
I thought about that one too.

Speaker 1 (38:51):
I love that Locked out of Heaven. No one is
talking about this girl, and we.

Speaker 14 (38:55):
Should be and I'm so glad you said it, and
I'm so glad you it.

Speaker 7 (39:00):
I've listened no one he's talking about her. I've listened
to it twice today.

Speaker 8 (39:05):
And finally, I'm so sorry, Barbara Strayce and you were outsung.
One less Bell to Answer, slash House is home.

Speaker 7 (39:12):
Oh my god, she keeps me up at night. Those
are such good pics.

Speaker 8 (39:16):
Artistry, artistry, and those are our picks by everyone.

Speaker 1 (39:20):
Love you WHOA, that's you know, I'm gonna agree. Okay,
well yeah, okay, one less Bell House, Okay, I'm in,
I'm in. You know. Love song was an interesting one.
I don't know. I don't think you can touch Sarah
in that song though, was like her her baby, you.

Speaker 2 (39:42):
Know what I mean?

Speaker 1 (39:42):
Like that's her song.

Speaker 2 (39:44):
I don't agree with that. I don't know what I
would like to pitch. Is I love you like a
love song?

Speaker 1 (39:51):
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, yeah yeah yeah yeah. That's a good. Okay,
that is better than the original. Okay, awesome missed out. Also,
he said, locked out of Heaven. I don't you know,
I love that number. No, I know, I love that
number two personally, I really had fun with that number.
But I don't think that we beat. We know that number.

Speaker 2 (40:11):
I agree with you, but I just use an excellent number.

Speaker 1 (40:13):
Very good. These are very good.

Speaker 2 (40:15):
I think it's close though very it's really good.

Speaker 1 (40:18):
Agreed, Okay, all right, A lotsas give it to us.

Speaker 9 (40:22):
I've chose five songs, which is really hard because there's
a lot of songs that I feel this way about.
I prefer Glee versions over a lot of other songs.

Speaker 11 (40:30):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (40:31):
But yeah, So I'll start with the heavy hitter Wide
Awake from season five, and I think you know, we
have feelings about that and the podcast as I've listened to,
but I just think it's beautiful, stunning, gorgeous. Jenna, you
sound amazing, You're crazy. It's a great song.

Speaker 1 (40:46):
Uh.

Speaker 9 (40:47):
Then we have Teenage Dream. I just I feel very
passionately about the Glee version of Teenage Dream. Warblers are better.
I'm gonna stand by that. I prefer it over Katy Perry.
I don't even listen. I'd even like listening to the
Katy Perry version truly. Uh, songbird for obvious reasons. I
mean that speaks for itself. That goes without saying. But yeah,

(41:07):
like I'm gonna say it anyway. Nya Ri Vera sounds amazing. Naya,
It's amazing, And I just love when she did like
subtle but impactful performances, you know, like she didn't have
to do much, she just sat there and sang. She
did that and then we are young.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
Now.

Speaker 9 (41:25):
That one, for me personally, I just think it is
a perfect example of what a Glee group number should be.

Speaker 1 (41:32):
We're talking Glee group numbers.

Speaker 9 (41:34):
It's just so it's nostalgic, but it also just shows
like how much this group of kids love each other.
And it makes you know, fans, even as fans, you're like,
oh I love Glee, Like that's the song that you
where you're just like, yes, this is Glee. And then
same goes for Paradise by the Dashboard Light obviously, uh same,

(41:55):
pretty much the same concept, Like just very like nostalgic
and a group number, and everyone did that, and I
think that's where everyone just nailed it performance wise, but
vocally insane Corey some of Corey's best vocals, in my opinion, agreed,
absolutely love, absolutely love Kevin.

Speaker 1 (42:14):
I saw you reacting when they said song, where do
you agree? I just said, okay, I will say a
lot of Nias songs. I either like as much or
better than the original Songbird is not one of them.
I think she's she's excellent on it, and I love

(42:35):
her voice on it. I don't think it's better than
the original.

Speaker 2 (42:39):
I don't think it's better than the original. It's incredible, though.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
It's just different. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (42:45):
Yeah, but it's close, It's close.

Speaker 1 (42:48):
Totally close, totally Emily, Emily give it, you tell us,
You tell us, Emily.

Speaker 11 (42:55):
These are no particular order, but my first one is
The Scientist.

Speaker 3 (43:00):
Yes.

Speaker 11 (43:01):
The second one is Don't Rain on My Parade, the
Rachel version, which I mean, what a moment. Then it
is Teenage Dream again, what a great Glee moment that
just exploded the internet when it happened. My next one
is Somebody to Love, which, uh what that is what

(43:22):
the show is all about. It is, like Andrew said
recently on the podcast, probably one of the best songs,
if not the best song on Glee. And then number five,
Jenna Girl, You've Gotta Get on this Train. My number five,
again no particular order, but it is wide away fan
of the original and this version just really does something.

Speaker 4 (43:45):
To my soul.

Speaker 11 (43:46):
All four of you sound so beautiful on it, and
you should be proud because it is a really spectacular cover.

Speaker 2 (43:54):
I am so happy everyone. First of all, thank you Emily.
Second of all, thank you everyone for shaming Jenna into
understanding how great Wide Awake is. I think it's better
than the original.

Speaker 1 (44:06):
Okay, fine, whatever you want to say, say your truth,
live your truth. I don't like Wide Awake as much
as I other people do. Okay, so that's the truth.

Speaker 2 (44:20):
I get it.

Speaker 1 (44:21):
I get it. Yeah, but I do think that, uh,
it's interesting to hear Somebody to Love. I totally get
the point because for the plot, for the characters, for
the show, for the fandom, like there are particular numbers

(44:42):
like Don't Stop Believing and Somebody to Love and We
Are Young that are such pivotal milestones for our show
that feel like it's connected to the the DNA of
the show. Correct, So like I get it, I just
don't believe.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
Yeah, yeah, you know, I love our version of Somebody
to Love. You're not gonna do it?

Speaker 1 (45:06):
Also like one of my favorite songs of all times,
so like you can't touch it, Okay.

Speaker 2 (45:09):
I also remember being and I'm sure I touched on
this before, but like when we were going into record
that I was so scared because I did not want
you don't want to touch it to like harm this song.
I get it, and you also don't want to be embarrassed.
It was early on in the show, right, like we
didn't know what was going to happen with the show.
People were gonna like it, and it's like do no

(45:29):
harm sort of is like the biggest like how do
you do this?

Speaker 3 (45:34):
No?

Speaker 1 (45:34):
I get it? And we that was early on too,
where you just learn like, Okay, some things are going
to work and some things aren't, and you just like
hope for the.

Speaker 2 (45:41):
Best and you had to trust in Adamanders and he
knew exactly what he was doing and Sash.

Speaker 1 (45:45):
And always did and then Teenage Dream also like I
I have to. I think it's because I also like
it's an opinion, right, Like I I do think or
agree that it's like pop perfection. It's not something that
I like turn on every day like I would turn

(46:05):
on The Scientist or somebody love, you know. So I
think that's why it's easier for me to say some
of these songs are better than the original. Sometimes you know,
it's don't funny because like a lot of these like
we're not getting a lot of Mercedes love from this which,
like normally I feel like you. We always talk about
Amber's book lists like we you normally do, but like

(46:27):
the songs that Amber was given were some of the
greatest bocalists of all time that nobody could possibly touch
except for maybe a handful, a small handful of people
as somebody's missing two fingers, like do you know what
I mean? Like so good? Oh test, what is it?

(46:48):
Ain't no way. I knew you were going to say that.
I agree.

Speaker 2 (46:53):
Tour version, oh yeah, live, and there were so many
incredible singers you can look at it online that do
this song.

Speaker 1 (47:02):
I'm sorry live live, not even news, nothing not touched.

Speaker 2 (47:09):
The live version is better than the recorded version.

Speaker 1 (47:11):
No, I okay, it's we could go in deep into
that one. Andrew from Gleek of the Week also voiced
in let's listen.

Speaker 13 (47:22):
Hello, Kevin and Jenna. It is Andrew Maguire from Gleek
of the Week podcast here to provide five Glee covers
that I believe are better than the original version, starting
off with number one, poker Face, say what you will
about the lyrics being inappropriate about a mother and daughter
reunion Leah and Adina always bring the vocals next up.
Swifties might be mad, but I don't think it's warranted

(47:45):
mine my man. Oh, are there any barber heads that
even listen to Glee podcasts? Because I hope not. Because
Leah Leah has the ultimate version of my man, My
Man is Leah's Faithfully Yeah. I can't help but cry
every time I listened to that. I literally tried listening

(48:05):
to the original faithfully yesterday and I was like, turn
this off? Literally what is this? And then this is
half joke but fully real looser like me. Season five
better than the original. I'm talking about the season two version.
I can't listen to the season two version the entire
time I'm listening to the season two version, I'm like,
turn it off. I want Kevin, Jenna coor Darren on

(48:28):
the track singing these uh I'll see you when you
watch my car. Stupidest lyrics of all time, but beautiful,
beautiful harmonies.

Speaker 1 (48:36):
My man. Andrew right there with you, Kevin he is.

Speaker 2 (48:40):
And I also agree with poker Face. No, you were
shaking your head out.

Speaker 1 (48:45):
I was absolutely not. That is not true. I love
that version of poker Face. I don't know, I don't
like that I think it was the circumstance of the
storyline that I didn't like it as much. And like
I love obviously I listen Lia sing all day, but like,
I don't know, there's something about it in my memory
that I'm like, no, it's not Okay, that's great. I'm

(49:08):
glad that we're on board with a lot of Andrews
that feel You're very kind.

Speaker 2 (49:13):
I need to revisit something controversial here that Emily said,
if we could just back to it for a second,
don't ran on my parade?

Speaker 1 (49:24):
Okay, I okay, am not as attached to the Barber version.
I did not grow up with that, right, Yeah, I'm same,
And so for me, my foundation of don't run in
my Parade is Lea's version. And so when I have
gone back to listen to Barber's version, I know this
is not fair, Like it's out of order. Yeah, yeah, yeah,

(49:48):
I feel you.

Speaker 2 (49:50):
I love Lea's version. I think it's perfect. I don't
like I but I'm not you know me, I'm I
do not know theater very well. I have no attachment
to that show, like, so it means something different to me.

Speaker 1 (50:06):
I also feel similar in that way that like Barbara
wasn't somebody like she was in Obviously she's like a legend,
but I didn't. I wasn't like vocally attached to her
in a lot of ways, like there were other people
that I was very attached to. And so I feel
like I could also comfortably say I prefer Lea's version

(50:27):
because there's not that emotional attachment to the Barbara version
of the original. I'm there, I'm there, So Sharen wrote
in their Picks and it was teenage dream. Okay, that
seems to be a fave. Friday Kevin, that common here

(50:50):
t controversial, I know, but it's better than the original.

Speaker 2 (50:54):
Not necessarily a top tier gleek hast version, but better
than the original. I mean sure, no, no, I get it.
It's the parameters.

Speaker 1 (51:04):
Yeah yeah, wide awake. Mm hmm. Okay, Americano dance again.
Because I am a Cassandra July stand I get it.
I don't don't agree, but I get it the same. Okay,
this it's time. Now there's a caveat. It's only because
it's the scene that got me intially as a wee
twelve year old. I get that. I I might I

(51:32):
might agree, I might agree. Wow. Yeah, I might agree, Okay, okay, okay,
I love that number in the courtyard. I love it, okay,
and then Strange's girlfriend also wrote in and said, maybe
this time, Kevin, I also a sleeper. I'm we missed correct? Correct,

(52:01):
that is correct, It's definitely correct.

Speaker 2 (52:03):
That goes so hard. I don't know if anyone's ever
said about maybe this time.

Speaker 1 (52:09):
But no, I know, but like it's Christen, im and
Ellie so like, I don't know, it's different.

Speaker 2 (52:17):
It's very very different.

Speaker 1 (52:20):
No, we know it is. You're right, the actual version
is not different, but the voices are different. Yeah, yeah, okay, okay,
yeah right. Oh a mash up one that I have
to say. I feel pretty and pretty? Oh hell yeah,

(52:44):
absolutely good.

Speaker 2 (52:46):
Oh it is so good. Okay, you know we didn't
address the elephant in the room. What don't stop believing?
Oh god, I mean to me, it's a no. I
think Steve Perry's voice is just and also like the

(53:07):
emotion in his voice is un not saying we don't
have not saying cordingly, I don't do that. I think
our version is really great and really different in its
own thing. But that original is one of the greatest
songs of all time.

Speaker 3 (53:20):
Agreed.

Speaker 1 (53:20):
I think like I've listened. I like I go back
to like when iPods were new and they were fat,
and like I was walking down New York City streets
like dreaming of like being a performer, like a big performer,
Like I just that is one of them and that
I would listen to all the time.

Speaker 11 (53:40):
M hmm.

Speaker 1 (53:41):
That didn't walking in with What's Wrong with Me? It
was a great song, great song, and like so yeah,
the Gleek cast came along and obviously like it's great,
but I think the original still still holds better. Sure
we missed so many right in and tell someone we

(54:02):
miss you know, it's interesting a lot of people are
saying we are young.
