What are you talking about?

Speaker 2 (00:13):
I mean, first of all, I think this is one
of the best fucking episodes on this funking show.

Speaker 1 (00:18):

this favorite.

Speaker 2 (00:23):

Speaker 1 (00:30):
I laughed a lot in this episode.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
There's so much funny shit in this episode. I'm so
glad Bill's coming on today.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
Yeah, we have Bill Lawrence on the show today. Guys,
surprisedly is he here?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Uh? Daniel, Okay, Well you can let him in when
he comes here. Bill's one of the only guests we
won't put in a virtual green room.

Speaker 1 (00:47):
No, we would. Nobody puts Bill, and nobody puts baby
old Billy in the corner.

Speaker 2 (00:52):
Oh my god. Yeah, I really thought this episode. I
I you know, I usually I pause when I want
to write something and make a note to talk about,
and I was pausing every other sentence. I just thought
it was so funny.

Speaker 1 (01:04):
Has a lot of funny moments, and there's.

Speaker 2 (01:06):
A lot of stunts in it. There's a lot of
funny gags. Rob is hilarious.

Speaker 1 (01:12):
Rob is hilarious, and Rob well.

Speaker 2 (01:14):
We will save it for when Bill gets on him.
How are you?

Speaker 1 (01:16):
I'm well, how are you?

Speaker 3 (01:18):
Good?

Speaker 4 (01:18):
Good? Good?

Speaker 2 (01:19):
A lot of people loving Deservant. I mean, if we
if we had merch, if I gotta tell you, if
if I heard could figure out, if the giant conglomerate
of my heart could figure out how to get us merch,
Deservant would be on a mug.

Speaker 1 (01:34):
Deservant would be the picture of the tea on the
T shirt. It would be on a T shirt.

Speaker 2 (01:39):
My I laughed out loud someone on my Instagram when
I promoted today's show. We record this a little bit
before you guys. So this is Tuesday the Sorry, this
is Thursday the sixth. Someone wrote this one's gonna be
deservant of a listen.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
I love it. I love it.

Speaker 4 (01:59):
Our fans are.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
So fucking awesome and funny.

Speaker 1 (02:01):
They're so witty, man, They're so witty.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
Very funny people that listen. Well, obviously, if you like
a show this good, you must be a funny person.

Speaker 1 (02:08):
They are savvy. They are savvy and with it.

Speaker 2 (02:12):
They love our songs. Did you see that thing I
sent you of the woman who on Twitter who edited
together a little quick video to the ramp song.

Speaker 1 (02:20):
I Ran Down the Ramp song.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
Yeah, I ran down the ramp. She cut together footage
of JD running around down the scrubs ramp.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
Down the scrubs ramp and several different Yeah, several different
ways he ran down. One time he goes down on
his back.

Speaker 2 (02:35):
Joell, you might have to reward that woman with letting
her ask a question. She fucking cut a video for us.

Speaker 1 (02:42):
Dude, No, listen, man, all right, and that's very nice.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
She spent a lot of time on that. I wish
it was longer.

Speaker 1 (02:48):
If you're listening, Nobody has done what Shay is done.
Nobody has done what Shay has done.

Speaker 2 (02:53):
She's coming up. He's on a little bit.

Speaker 1 (02:55):
That's what I'm trying to say. If you are, If
you we're not. We've been giving it away a little
too easily.

Speaker 2 (03:00):
Oh so you're saying the only way to get on
is to is to self publish.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
I'm saying, at least get close to the level of
fandom that Shay has has has shown. Man, that's like
he trumps everybody, this young everybody, This.

Speaker 2 (03:17):
Young lady spent one or a lot of time. Think
how much time she's searched the whole fucking show for
shots of JD running down the ramp.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
She went to YouTube and was like scrubs ramp and
what she did?

Speaker 2 (03:31):
Oh man, anyway, I laughed that song. I cannot get
that fucking song out of my head. I sing it
all day long.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
You know what song I can't get out of my
fucking head. What what you're trying to get into ideo shoon?
What you're trying to do?

Speaker 2 (03:44):
I agree, it's fire. I'm not gonna lie and.

Speaker 1 (03:46):
Shit, you're trying to get into ideo shoon? What is it?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
What is it? Well, don't forget everybody. That's a ring
tone that you can have on your phone. I know again, Joe,
is there a max to how many ring tones we have?
Because when I read my comments, everyone's like asking lots
of questions. They want another one.

Speaker 1 (04:07):
We can't do another one?

Speaker 2 (04:08):
We can, DJ Collins said. On the last episode. DJ
Collin said, we could.

Speaker 1 (04:13):
I know he did, but that's an I mean, listen,
he was just trying to be nice.

Speaker 2 (04:19):
We did our we did our new favorite segment, asked
DJ Collin and he gave us permission.

Speaker 1 (04:24):
I know, but no, dude, no man.

Speaker 2 (04:27):
If I had the bandwidth in my brain, I would,
I would. I would just take over the whole merch
thing and do it myself.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
But I don't.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
I know that I care enough. But I have so
many funny ideas, and our fans and listeners are suggesting
so many funny ideas, like it would be a whole
little side career for me.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
I love that everybody's involved, man, everybody wants to be
involved in it, and I like, well.

Speaker 2 (04:47):
You know, GQ British GQ says it's the second best
podcast of the year.

Speaker 1 (04:53):
Wow, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
And they're the British are wise. They're very wise.

Speaker 1 (04:57):
They're wise, they're very very wise.

Speaker 2 (05:00):
We have good taste. Let's be honest, Well, you know,
British people have good taste.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
Let's let's let's let's call it what it is. They're
right is right.

Speaker 2 (05:11):
Like in my beard, I'm trying to catch up with you.

Speaker 1 (05:12):
I do like it. I like that you're letting the
gray grow out a little bits.

Speaker 2 (05:16):
A little bit. Yeah, I can't get as bushy as yours. Ever,
it just won't happen. It would take song for me.

Speaker 1 (05:21):
This is this is all quarantine.

Speaker 2 (05:23):
Oh, the whole quarantine. But I feel like even if
I guess, maybe if I did four months. Yeah, it
looks nice. I like it on you. It's a new look.

Speaker 1 (05:30):
It is a new look. I like it too.

Speaker 2 (05:34):
How's Casey putting up with it? Does she complain about it?

Speaker 3 (05:36):
No?

Speaker 1 (05:36):
She doesn't complain about my beard. She doesn't complain. She
complains about other things, you know, like my lack of
uh support in the house when it comes to the children.

Speaker 2 (05:47):
Are you not helping? Are you being the horrible husband
that lies on the couch and plays video games?

Speaker 1 (05:51):
No, I'm not being that person. But you know, my wife,
if there's nothing to do, she's gonna find something to
do in the form of cleaning or something like that.
That's just her and I don't think she's always been
like that, but I think ever since she's had kids,
a way to get away from everybody is to clean,
I guess, because she'll find things that aren't even dirty.

(06:11):
And it's really weird because she's never been that type
of person, but she'll find things that are dirty and
just be like I gotta clean this right now and then.
But it's a way. I think it's a way for
her to spend time away from us without being like
I can't be around y'all.

Speaker 2 (06:24):
Don't you feel like in quarantine? This fucking deep into quarantine,
people are just starting to lose their minds a little
bit and they're like, what can I do? I know,
I'm going to clean the freezer like people are. I
think people are going a little batty.

Speaker 1 (06:35):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 5 (06:36):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
She she got out the house today, which I'm very
happy for.

Speaker 2 (06:39):
She let her out.

Speaker 1 (06:41):
I let her out.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
I let her as you're so strict with letting me. Lou,
did you like a padlock on the front door?

Speaker 1 (06:49):
She was like, can I go out? I was like
one second, click click click, let me undo the chain
under the chain, underdo of the chain. And then I
opened the door and it's.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Like bright sunlight hits her face right.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
And she's like blind for a second. When it hits her,
She's like, oh, so bright. And then I let her out.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
Where did she go?

Speaker 1 (07:12):
She went to play tennis, oh with Chris Crab, with
Christopher Crab.

Speaker 2 (07:18):
She went, that's our old Donald and I we spoke
about him once he was our old tennis coach when
we were allowed to go to tennis.

Speaker 1 (07:23):
Yeah, she took a tennis lesson.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
Oh look who it is? Everybody? Thunderous applause, gentleman, burn
your key, Donald thunder give it up, turn, give it
up for Bill, America's favorite show runner is here, everybody.

Speaker 3 (07:41):
I'm sure I have a lot of complaints today. I
a lot of issues today.

Speaker 2 (07:45):
Bill, Why is your camera not on?

Speaker 6 (07:46):
I got a lot of today I'm bringing I'm bringing
up complaints and stuff.

Speaker 4 (07:55):
I'm ready.

Speaker 2 (07:55):
All right, go we want to hear it all. Let's
go this such this is this called Bill bitches.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
See, that's what it is.

Speaker 6 (08:04):
That's what There's a new segment we're looking I mean
it is the second season of the show. Congratulations. By
the way, guys, I saw something that like a podcast
you have to listen to. I've run into people that
talk about the podcast independently of you two.

Speaker 3 (08:23):
Its success makes me very happy.

Speaker 6 (08:26):
The only thing that makes me happier is there are
some people that feel that I'm some way involved or
behind it, and I am not changing that narrative.

Speaker 3 (08:34):
If I can take credit, I am are behind it.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
Bill, You are this whole thing if it's worn't for you,
I wouldn't know Donald Donald would be I'd be like,
I don't know what I'd be doing porn you Donald
would be doing Clueless seven.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
Right, dude. Every time they bring up do you want
to produce? I'm the one that's the holdout when it
comes to the Clueless remake. Every time they're like, do
you want to make it? Do you want to do
the remake? Do you want to do the remake? And
I'm like, no, no, no, no, not down. I'm still
spending that Scrubs money.

Speaker 2 (09:03):
Wait a second, are you kidding? Are you serious? Alicia's
down to doing it? Okay, you should do it. Where
are they now?

Speaker 1 (09:09):
It would be great if we could do a Clueless sequel,
that would be awesome. Do I think it's gonna happen?
I think nowadays more people are open to it. I
think ten years ago everybody was like, get the heck
out in here.

Speaker 2 (09:21):
I mean, like a Netflix move, a Netflix movie would
be hilarious. I'd watch the hell out of that. Sorry, Bill,
go on, I didn't mean to interrupt the Wait. We
didn't count in, Bill, And since it's your favorite thing
to do, do you want to count a send to
America's favorite song.

Speaker 6 (09:32):
Yeah, this might be the last time I ever do
it because we're looking for a new gig.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
You're right, you're ready, right, But by the way, people
love it when you do it when you're not supposed to.
But now we're giving you permission to do it.

Speaker 3 (09:41):
Bill, I don't want to.

Speaker 2 (09:52):
All right, Bill, Please don't count into the theme song.
Please don't.

Speaker 1 (09:57):
Whatever you do, Bill, just don't count into the themes
we asked you.

Speaker 3 (10:01):
You guys think, but I know what.

Speaker 7 (10:07):
Stories about show we made about a bunch of dogs
and nurses, Sana.

Speaker 8 (10:15):
I said, he's the stories natural. So YadA ra here, YadA,
here is.

Speaker 2 (10:30):
Bill. I have so many questions for you. I want
to tell you that I I think this is one
of the best episodes of season one and two thus far.
I laughed my ass off, and it's also moving, and
I just I'm so cool glad that coincidentally we were
having you on today because as I was watching it,
I thought it was fucking really one of the better

(10:51):
ones so far.

Speaker 6 (10:52):
It's one of my favorite ones for everybody. But we're
gonna start with my grievances.

Speaker 2 (10:56):
Yeah, go sorry, Bill, bitches all right, maybe maybe maybe
they shouldn't.

Speaker 1 (10:59):
Be a little Dan just just give him little music,
just some little music, no well no.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Just like not not during this thing, just a little
to just figure out a little intro into the new segment.
Bill bitches, we're not.

Speaker 3 (11:13):
We're not agreed that that's the new segment.

Speaker 6 (11:15):
But if you're if you're coming up with what the
music would be for the segment, it should be something like.

Speaker 2 (11:24):
This is a problem.

Speaker 1 (11:26):
We give you, We give you an and you take
a foots.

Speaker 2 (11:32):
You said you were going to come up with the
new season.

Speaker 3 (11:37):
That would maybe be happy.

Speaker 6 (11:38):
Okay, So here's here's my tiny grievances is when you
guys ask me quite, I don't want to be in
the same camp.

Speaker 3 (11:46):
As wiki Kevin or Derek or whatever that guy's name is.

Speaker 2 (11:50):
What's Wiky Trevor Trevor Wiki Wiky.

Speaker 6 (11:53):
I'm not I'm not ever gonna call him that because
even though he seems nice, he's an enemy now because
he because.

Speaker 2 (11:58):
He don't want to do it, he problematic. I'm not
gonna lie.

Speaker 6 (12:03):
Have you guys noticed how you put me down and
make me feel like he does and knows the stuff
better than me. Have you noticed that through line it's
underneath He doesn't say it, but it's underneath it, and
underneath it is that he knows more about the show
than me.

Speaker 2 (12:18):
I can him on. I just wait, we just signed
fucking Funko pops for the guy.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
Maybe no funk pops, No Funko pops for Trevor.

Speaker 1 (12:30):
Okay, Trevor is a big fucking know it all dude.
He's too much of a know it all just doesn't know.
Are you know how we feel about know it all? Zach?
You know how we feel about.

Speaker 3 (12:40):
I actually like Trevor.

Speaker 6 (12:41):
I just don't like feeling like on level playing field
with anybody.

Speaker 3 (12:46):
It makes me upset. The So here's the here's my
here's my grievance.

Speaker 6 (12:51):
My number one grievance is when you guys asked me questions,
I answer them after you've recorded it, so you can't
respond to the answer and so there's no real discourse.
I'm just like WICKI Trevor. So I want to think
of something that you can that I can record before
you do an episode in some cool way that you

(13:12):
could listen to and be prompted and then hear like
a response later.

Speaker 3 (13:16):
Do you know what I mean? Something that I can
be Yeah, yes, we'd love that. So like it's even something,
go ahead, you go, you go.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
People love it when you're on the show, and people
love your your your contributions, even when you start our
theme song without permission. And I think any way that
you want to be more. You're just a very busy man.
We don't want to cut into your time. Donald and
I are sitting around in quarantine staring at the walls,
whereas you're like writing eleven shows. So as much time

(13:44):
as you have, you can, please do it.

Speaker 3 (13:46):
Well, here's what I want us to think of. It's quick,
it's there's only two requests I have. One is that.

Speaker 6 (13:55):
We think of anything that I give you guys, something
that you can have Daniel press play on during the episode.

Speaker 3 (14:01):
Because what I miss is I listened.

Speaker 6 (14:02):
To these shows religiously. I listened to them the nights
they come out. I put my earphones on and listen
to them when I go to bed that night. It's awesome.
But what bums me out is when I do answer
your question, I don't get to hear your reaction or response.

Speaker 3 (14:15):
To it, you know what I mean, because it happened
after the fact. So I think maybe when I know
what episode's coming.

Speaker 6 (14:19):
If you ever like, oh, we'd like it, I can
either go uh ask you a question like what do
you think the writing room's favorite choke was in this episode?
And you can play the ending at the end if
you guys riff on it, or I can ask you
a question you all question about the episode based on
some kind of trivia or where it came from.

Speaker 3 (14:36):
That might we do into a discussion. So I want
to I want to be I want to flip it.

Speaker 6 (14:41):
And then the other thing is when you do have
me on, I want permission to bring a mystery guest
that you guys aren't allowed to know us.

Speaker 1 (14:51):
That whatever you want? Bill, Bill, what those are?

Speaker 6 (14:56):
Those are my only two contract demands?

Speaker 2 (14:59):
Miss you make it happen? Do we have the best
producer in the podcast world and she's gonna make it
all happen.

Speaker 3 (15:06):
I'm gonna steal Joel from you.

Speaker 2 (15:07):
By the way, now that was gonna happen. I knew
that was gonna happen. Although Joel's like Joel's like produce
a podcast or work for Bill Lawrence in comedy writing.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
Later the next episode, the next episode, that'll just be
some new person and yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:25):
I can make Remember when Joel cut out, Remember when
you put up he cut out. It'll be like weekend
at Bernie's. It'll just be like just a Joel doll
sitting there.

Speaker 6 (15:35):
I want I want Joel and Dan All to leave
right before your tour starts. So and they're.

Speaker 2 (15:42):
Coming with Bill. You might come on the tour bus.
I think you might enjoy when we do the tour,
coming on our on our tour bus.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
I'll probably take a plane from place to place.

Speaker 2 (15:50):
But I like you, well, you'll be missing all the
fun on the We'll be missing all of the beautiful you.

Speaker 6 (15:55):
By the way, nobody over eighteen has said you'll be
missing all the fun on the bus.

Speaker 3 (16:01):
Guys, no fun on the bus.

Speaker 2 (16:03):
Bill Donald and I have always wanted to tous We
always wanted to be We always wanted to live the
life of a tour bus rock band. And since we
don't play instruments and we're going to live that tour
bus life, we're gonna have a ROADI yeah, we should
bring up.

Speaker 3 (16:19):
I gotta tell you, I I went, I saw Charlotte.

Speaker 2 (16:22):
You know you're the producer, You're not the roady. We're
gonna we're gonna we need I don't know. No, no,
I would never we need a roady. I need someone
who tunes our instruments.

Speaker 3 (16:32):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 6 (16:33):
Uh uh, by the way for playing charlotte song, you guys.
That was so cool and uh uh you know she
loves you guys so much. She was so grateful, but
it was so neat for me. And I say that
because Charlotte's tour bus on her last tour was so
cool and I saw pictures of it, but I was
never allowed on it because that's.

Speaker 3 (16:53):
Where she had parties after shows and stuff.

Speaker 2 (16:55):
And so yeah, we don't on the tour bus, but
you can request.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
That's other request.

Speaker 6 (17:00):
If I'm allowed on your tour bus, I would like
my daughter to not be allowed on your tour bus.

Speaker 2 (17:04):
Yeah, yeah, done, Sorry, no, Charlotte's allowed. I gotta tell
you that song is really good. Bill. I'm not just
saying this because I love you and I love Charlotte.
I actually played the pod the end of the podcast
a few times because I love the song and I
also really thought my talk up into it was spectacular

(17:24):
and no, but it's a really good song. I put it.
I added it to my workout playlist.

Speaker 6 (17:30):
Dude, she's killing it. I would drop everything to be
a roadie for her or for you guys. You know,
it's just so fun being around music and being around
all that stuff.

Speaker 2 (17:39):
Should we talk for a second about your new show.
I want to. I feel like we should promote ted
Lasso Bill.

Speaker 3 (17:45):
We can't.

Speaker 6 (17:45):
I just want at the end of the mystery guest thing,
and the reason I'm going to do it and you
guys will like it is even though some mystery guests
will freak you out, a couple of them will be writers.
Because you guys are doing such interesting things talking about
the craft of acting and your experiences on it, to
occasionally throw another writer in the mix of this stuff,
and I really like it.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
We'd love that.

Speaker 1 (18:04):
We would really love that. You know, people, we were
talking about that on the on the last podcast. We're
actually talking about that, like it's really important to us
that we bring other people from the show because everybody
has a story to tell, and everybody has it. You know,
it was ten years of a lot of people's lives,
nine years at people's lives, so I know that there's
so many stories, like people got married.

Speaker 6 (18:24):
Oh didn't we had account of how many of how
many babies were born during that show, and I think
it was up to something like thirty something between all
the actors, crew and writers and stuff.

Speaker 3 (18:32):
It was crazy.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
Yeah, so we we we asked, we asked our audience
and they were like, yes please, Yeah, we got.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
Crew members, well, crew members, I mean we gotta we
we we said, hey, should we bring on crew people?
And people overwhelmingly said yes, So we got to think
of like that. I mean, we definitely want Patrick Bolton
because he has his own song.

Speaker 6 (18:51):
But of course, you know, by the way, uh, Neil
Goldman keeps count of how many times you've mentioned his
name on your podcast, so whenever you say Neil Goldman,
I'll get a text from him that just says forementioned.

Speaker 2 (19:02):
So far, Neil was one of the writers. Yeah, I
think we should have some writers on because also writers
are funny too. So Bill Mike Schwartz is in this episode.
He puts his penis in a flashlight.

Speaker 3 (19:13):
Yes, it was before he was Lloyd. So he's not
Lloyd in this Oh no he's no, he's not. Remember
Lloyd started as a delivery man.

Speaker 1 (19:21):
Lloyd shows up with the bricks, a ton of bricks.

Speaker 6 (19:24):
Right, Lloyd's the delivery man, and then we just let
Mike do the flashlight thing, and then Lloyd continues to
be a delivery man that loves heavy metal, and then
Lloyd eventually comes to be part of the brain Trust.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
Yes, now, Bill, are you sure that it's in your
mind that that's not Lloyd? Because why why is it not?
He ever says I'm Jim or anything.

Speaker 6 (19:44):
I think he was acting. Maybe he is in his head,
but I didn't. I remember us arguing in the writer's
room if he was allowed to do that, and I
said yes, because at that point, by that point, I
think I'd put myself in the show three different times
once getting it.

Speaker 3 (20:01):
You know, I whenever I was bored.

Speaker 6 (20:02):
I don't know if you guys remembered, I used to
go put myself on the show and occasionally give myself
a line or reaction until I finally gave myself a
part as a minister that lived in the Bahamas and
then a janitor that also works at the hospital.

Speaker 3 (20:14):
So I didn't have any ground to stand on. I
eventually just had to let people do it. But yeah,
let's say he's Wood.

Speaker 1 (20:22):
Okay, But because that's the thing, we always joked that
the janitor didn't have any kids. But in this episode
at the end he's in front of a class. Now
my question is.

Speaker 2 (20:31):
No, he's lying. He's lying.

Speaker 3 (20:32):
Yeah, well he doesn't have any kids.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
Yeah, So it is a it is a fantasy, and
this is something that JD dreams.

Speaker 2 (20:38):
Okay, cool, Oh my god, we gotta get an episode.
It's so good. Before we do, I just want to
say Bill is too modest to talk about this, but
he has a new show with Jason Sidecz. It's it's
on Apple. It's called ted Lasso, and it's getting extraordinary reviews.
And I directed episode two and it's really fucking good

(20:59):
and I'm happy for you Bill. And if you're a
fan of it, and if you're a fan of this,
shhow you're gonna like it because it's very, very funny.
It's a similar well it's not fantasies and stuff. But Bill,
talk about it for a second. Plug yourself for God's sake.

Speaker 5 (21:10):
Ah.

Speaker 6 (21:11):
Look, Jasis Sudeikis is a very funny performer, a great actor.
But he's also was a writer on SNL first and
he wrote and came up with his character long ago.
And it's about a transplanted American college football coach that
goes over to the UK to coach a Premier league
soccer team. It's a fish out of water thing, but
you know me and man, I'm a sucker for heart

(21:31):
and emotions, and most importantly, I think, besides being kind
of a fun sports movie, if people could use maybe
an optimistic, hopeful show.

Speaker 3 (21:42):
It is that.

Speaker 6 (21:43):
And I certainly needed to work on something like that
for a change, and I'm.

Speaker 3 (21:49):
Really proud of it.

Speaker 6 (21:49):
You did great work, man, as I was lucky that
Zach was there and had nothing else to do that
I could kind of shang hi him and make him
direct an episode.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
Well, it's funny.

Speaker 1 (21:56):
I was.

Speaker 2 (21:56):
I was in the UK because my girlfriend was working there,
and Bill was like, oh my god, this is perfect.
Do you want to direct an episode of the show.
And I said, oh my god, please, I'm sitting here,
I got nothing to do. I should be writing something,
but I'm just fucking around and not writing. And I
came and it was so cool because, as we've told
you on the show, when you when episode, if you know,
after the pilot, the first few episodes, you're still kind

(22:18):
of kind of developing the tone of the show and
figuring out the way the camera moves and and and
I was just awesome to be back on a set
with Bill so surreal this time in London. Uh and Sadeikis,
who I think is so fucking funny and talented and
a really really funny group of people. And and I I,
you know, I delivered my cut. I don't know how

(22:39):
much you changed my cut.

Speaker 6 (22:40):
Bill, Well, no, look, stuff always changes, that's me saying
in a nice way.

Speaker 3 (22:44):
We changed it some.

Speaker 6 (22:45):
But Zach, but that you did establish a visual, you know,
look of the show, which was you know, and we
hadn't really even thought about it. If you're in the
UK as an American TV show, shooting these kind of
great kind of visual of where you actually are would
be silly not to do it. And you did it
in yours in Richmond and what is unbelievably beautiful site,

(23:07):
you know where you shot that photo shoot. You did
it with the guy walking his dogs in the town green,
which was amazing, And you kind of set a visual
style for showing big and beautiful landscapes and stuff that
we kind of continued to wrap.

Speaker 2 (23:20):
Yeah, it was a lot of fun. And I had
to figure ironically, I had to figure something sportsy out. Donald,
you'll be proud of me because the show is about
a soccer team or football as we say over there,
and these these gentlemen who take care of the pitch
that's what they call the field. Donald, are so proud
of it that and of course it's beautiful. It's like

(23:41):
perfect that you can't run. They don't want gear on
the on the pitch.

Speaker 6 (23:45):
They don't want no no, Dolly's no, no, no, no anything.

Speaker 2 (23:49):
So I had to come up with the amazing key grip.
I had to come up with, and I was like,
cause I had all these shots of these guys playing
soccer like in and in and around in the game,
around them and everything, and we came up with this
amazing rig that had these big inflatable tires. It's basically
often more used for dollying on sand, but it didn't

(24:11):
make any imprint on the grass. And then we put
a remote head on it and these guys the grips
would run all around with it and the camera operator
was controlling it from the remote head by on the side,
and it was like approved by the greensman to be
able to be used. And I was really proud of that.
It was really cool, and.

Speaker 3 (24:28):
We used it in every episode.

Speaker 6 (24:29):
And when someone asked me, literally in an interview the
other day, who came up with that, I admitted that
it was me that.

Speaker 2 (24:42):
You already told me. He already broke it to me
that one of my favorite shots was cut. And I'm
really sad because it was fucking such a cool shot.
But hey, this is what happens when you're a director
for a TV show. You just do all you can
and then you hand it off to a showrunner like Bill,
and sometimes you lose dope shots.

Speaker 6 (25:01):
I'm going to segue into what you said about this episode,
and I'm going to compliment you guys both because what's
hard for me sometimes to watch episodes and I hadn't
watched any of these Scrubs episodes for years until you
guys started doing this is when you go back and
look at him, if you were involved in him, you always,
I do anyways, get stuck and be like, oh, I
could have done this better, and you guys have had.

Speaker 3 (25:22):
You guys are so candid.

Speaker 6 (25:23):
Sometimes you're like, ah, this isn't my favorite episode, you know,
And for me, what's so hard is you sometimes watch
an episode that even if.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
It's one of your favorites.

Speaker 6 (25:31):
You'll go, oh, it's one of my favorites because this
A story is awesome, and this B story is okay,
the C story sucks or the B story is amazing.

Speaker 3 (25:40):
A story is not.

Speaker 6 (25:40):
This episode I really like because I actually watched it
and liked every single story and thought it was great
for every single performer.

Speaker 3 (25:47):
So I was excited that you guys, let me do
this one with you.

Speaker 2 (25:49):
By the way, it was a total accident because I
just said I missed having you on, and Donald missed
having you on, and the fans always like it when
you're on, and I was like, hey, come, do come
do this one. And then I watch it today and
I was like, oh, I'm so happy we have you
because I literally stopped every ten seconds and was writing
something down.

Speaker 1 (26:04):
There are a lot of great jokes in this one.

Speaker 2 (26:07):
A lot of good stunts.

Speaker 1 (26:08):
I gotta say, this guy great stunts.

Speaker 2 (26:10):
This guy who plays JD is a fucking really good
comic stunt.

Speaker 1 (26:15):
Where we get into all of that ship. Let's do
the recap.

Speaker 2 (26:18):
Oh, sorry for this. As you know, we have a
new segment where Donald sums up the episode, sometimes elegantly,
sometimes horribly we'll see what's gonna happen today.

Speaker 3 (26:29):
I have not heard him do one horrible and I
think I have a question.

Speaker 6 (26:34):
When it's like thirty six seconds, you act disappointed?

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Well, sometimes sometimes he does. He gets lazy about it.
He only comes up with like ten seconds of material
and then he stretches it out. He's like, this episode,
that's funny. Are you ready? Donald, Let's go and go.

Speaker 1 (26:54):
A new character is introduced, played by Richard Kine, and
much like the Core seven, he's trying to find something.
Cox is trying to get Richard's character out of the
hospital because he feels he's wasting everyone's time. Jad's trying
to find a way back into Elliott's heart. Turk is
trying to find a way to keep an elderly woman
who just had brain surgery from driving. Elliott's a hot

(27:15):
mess and needs to find a place to live. The
thing about searching is it's often followed by discovery, and
all of our heroes are caught off guard when they
find what they're looking for.

Speaker 2 (27:25):
Oh shit, whoa, that's the first one.

Speaker 3 (27:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (27:33):
The first thing about searching is it often leads to discovery.

Speaker 3 (27:36):
Is something that I'm going to lift and say that.

Speaker 6 (27:38):
I remember when I first said that.

Speaker 2 (27:40):
That isn't just that's good. I don't know if you're
just showing off because Bill was on the show today,
But that was beautiful.

Speaker 1 (27:50):
When we when we when Bill agreed to come on
the show, I was like, I gotta make the freaking Yeah.
He kept a little bit better.

Speaker 2 (27:56):
Yeah, he was like, I'm gonna stick the landing with
a poetic sentence. I, by the way.

Speaker 6 (28:01):
Just see you guys know before the end of this
I will weave that sentence into a comment without you
guys ready for it to come.

Speaker 3 (28:07):
I'm sorry going to say that. The thing about searching
is it also often leads to discovery.

Speaker 2 (28:11):
And it felt like something JD would say in a
voiceover and the show.

Speaker 3 (28:16):
Well, you'd say at the end of the day. First,
you'd say the.

Speaker 1 (28:18):
Day, at the end of the day, at the end
of the day.

Speaker 3 (28:23):
Did you guys ever tell that piece of trivia?

Speaker 6 (28:25):
It's one of my favorite things that I don't know
if you both know or remember, is when our show
was at its hottest, a small publishing company said, hey,
we'd like to give you some money, which is always
interesting and money in advances. We want to do a
book of all those kind of inspirational life guidance scrubs quotes,

(28:46):
JD voiceovers at the end. And we initially ran on
and I were like, oh, we're definitely doing that. Of course,
you know, it'll be do, it'll be whatever, it'll be great.
And some of them are really good. But then when
you take all the manipulative indie music out, guys, and
you remove your performances, some of them literally are like

(29:06):
at the end of the day, things.

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Happen, and then other things happen.

Speaker 6 (29:10):
And sometimes the things make you sad, and sometimes the
things make you happy. And and we were, by the way,
we were immediately looking at him going, oh, we can't
do this.

Speaker 2 (29:20):
Ever, I remember sometimes I remember sometimes recording him being
like this makes no fucking sense. But then you slap,
you slap the little indie music gone in and do
a cool slow motion crane shot and bam, you're there.

Speaker 6 (29:36):
When you when when push comes to shoves, sometimes your
friends are your friends, and sometimes your enemies or your enemies.

Speaker 3 (29:43):
Bomb bomb bomb.

Speaker 9 (29:44):
But in the end, but in the end, he's gonna
add with like a meaningful word like and in the end,
it all comes down to friendship.

Speaker 3 (29:58):
Dude, ude, do do you so cheap?

Speaker 4 (30:04):
Mess?

Speaker 3 (30:04):
Sorry?

Speaker 2 (30:05):
All right? So the episode opens with JD talking about
black people in movie theaters yelling at the screen. Yeah,
I don't know if we're allowed to make that joke anymore.
I apologize if it's a cancer, it's that Joelle.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
And so dude, we make fun of that.

Speaker 4 (30:22):
Listen.

Speaker 5 (30:23):
I understand why why people feel like they can't do
it because your culture doesn't allow it. Our culture does
allow it. And it's the best part of being black,
and to react to the screen.

Speaker 1 (30:32):
It's one of the best things ever.

Speaker 4 (30:34):
Do.

Speaker 5 (30:34):
See a movie on the South Side of Chicago, blow
your mind. You're like a totally different experience.

Speaker 1 (30:40):
Who you going in that room?

Speaker 3 (30:45):
Donald?

Speaker 6 (30:45):
Do you remember uh Eddie Murphy's Amityville horror bit when
he was kind of doing he was doing a bit
about talking to the movie theater, and then he also
segued into how white people in the horror movies don't
listen to the ghosts, you know, like in amity Little
Horror like.

Speaker 1 (31:03):
It right, I went something like I went to see
the horror movie and you know, the ghast goes get
out right and and the people stayed in the house.
If it was a black family, they'd be like, Wow,
look at this beautiful house. Look at the lovely furniture.
It's got a pool in the back of Oh my God,
leads to a lake. This is great. Ge't out too bad.

(31:24):
We can't stay.

Speaker 3 (31:30):
But by the way, Zach, you just stumbled onto something
that we talked about in the writer's room a lot.
And why I'm.

Speaker 6 (31:36):
Grateful for Joelle chiming in is there's one It's that's
the line you have to find in these writers rooms.

Speaker 3 (31:43):
Man.

Speaker 6 (31:43):
Is it would be one thing for JD to make
fun of, Oh, Turk, you and other black people talk
in the movie theater. The other thing is when you
get to an endpoint of what Joelle just said, which
was true for me, is turk going to you?

Speaker 3 (31:58):
You wish you could talk during the movie? Is you
know what I mean to me? That's that's what I love.
I have anxiety such a friendship moment.

Speaker 2 (32:05):
My father was fucking nuts about people talking in the
movie theater, and I have anxiety about it because he
would often confront people. I'm not we didn't go to
a movie theater like you know, like you're saying, Joel
on the South Side of Chicago or what. But we
were going in the suburbs and not just black people,
white people. People would talk during the movie and he

(32:25):
would confront them, and I get like anxiety thinking about
it now because it was so embarrassing, and I just
I don't know. I whenever I go to the movie
theater and someone's talking, I get all stressed about it.

Speaker 6 (32:38):
That's why the amount of times I've heard my wife
say just open your candy to somebody, because you know
how people, I'm one of these people.

Speaker 3 (32:47):
It's better.

Speaker 6 (32:47):
It's better to open your candy slow, you know, But
then the crinkle just lasts longer rather than just to
rip it open. So if someone is crinkling their little
bag of sour gut, Chris is like, just open your candy,
open your can.

Speaker 2 (33:00):
God.

Speaker 1 (33:00):
I used to love going to the movie theaters and
to the movie and seeing a movie and hearing not
people talk like amongst themselves, but talk with the movie theater.

Speaker 6 (33:11):
You know.

Speaker 1 (33:12):
I grew up in New York City. My parents belonged
to a theater in Harlem, and so the Apollo Theater
was up the block, and there was a movie theater
right next to the Apollo Theater, and I remember going
and seeing School Days in that movie theater, and it's
a Spike Lee movie about college rushing, Black college rushing,

(33:33):
and so they would have step shows and all of
these things, and I remember they had a step there's
a step show in the movie, and this fraternity is
going hard. And I remember sitting in the audience with
my best friend and his dad and looking over and
people were in the aisle stepping.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
To the freaking movies.

Speaker 1 (33:56):
And you know, if you're not, if you're listen, and
if you don't know better, you'd be like, oh, this
is part of the show. But I knew it wasn't
a part of the show. I knew these people caught
feelings for the moment that was going on. And so
now we're not even watching the movie anymore. We're watching
the people in the aisle dance and everything like that.
And I get a kick out of I get a
kick out of stuff like that. If you can say
something in a movie and it's funny and it and

(34:20):
it's a moment where it needs, you know, where a
joke is lacking or something like that, I kudos, man,
if you could do that.

Speaker 2 (34:27):
And I'm in a theater, so you like it when
you when you go to like a movie theater and
everyone's like making wise cracks at the movie.

Speaker 4 (34:33):
You don't mind it.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
You think it's funny.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
I mean, they made TV shows about this ship Mystery
Science Theater.

Speaker 2 (34:39):
I know, but those people are funny, I'm sure not
everyone yelling shit at the movie theater.

Speaker 1 (34:42):
Right, I can't like. Look if you if you if
the ship that you're saying at the screen is not funny,
then we got a problem. And you know, please, you
better keep it to your seat, you better, you bet right,
that's one of those things. If you're gonna interrupt the movie,
you better say something funny. Don't say it falls flat.

Speaker 6 (35:00):
Don't you think this divides people as far as movie
fans like I have some friends that are happy to
never go to a movie theater again and to say,
oh my gosh, I hope movies are always released into
your house. And there's something for me about the community
experience of it all that I would I would miss
it forever, you know.

Speaker 2 (35:18):
I agree with that, especially Spectacle And you know, don't
get Donald starting it on Marvel movies and Star Wars,
but for me, like Donald likes Star Wars, no he
hates it. I don't know. I don't know. I don't
know if you've heard, but he's been cast as Chubaka's
cousin who can talk.

Speaker 3 (35:34):
By the way, is there a way?

Speaker 6 (35:36):
There has to be a way that we can, you know, Oprah,
this into reality because you guys have been talking about
it so very much.

Speaker 3 (35:44):
We have to.

Speaker 1 (35:45):
I've been trying to see someone with thet I've been
trying to secret this shit for like thirty forty six years, dude,
since I when does Star Wars come out? I've been
trying to secret this shit. I'm gonna be in a
Star Wars movie one day. I'm gotten close up and
on the Star Wars television show.

Speaker 2 (36:02):
Yeah, the only way it happens, the only way it
happens if someone we know well gets to direct one
of them.

Speaker 1 (36:09):
And no, that's not the only way it happens.

Speaker 6 (36:11):
No, there's a there's uh, there's three degrees of JJ
out there too.

Speaker 3 (36:16):
We just got to figure it out.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
JJ ain't hiring me. JJ hired me a long time ago.
He ain't hired me since. I remember I had a
meeting with JJ. I remember I had a meeting with
JJ and he was talking about Star Trek right, and
he didn't want to give it away, and I was like, well,
is there a part for me? He was like, no,
there's no part for you in this one. But the
next one, Donald, And then I was like, oh yeah, okay,
bet freaking they made three Star Trek movies. I'm not

(36:40):
in any of them. Then he gets Star Wars and
he goes and hires John Boyega instead of me.

Speaker 2 (36:45):
Listen man, for me, it was supposed to be forty six.
I don't think that Stormbrober was supposed to be forty six.

Speaker 1 (36:53):
No offense, I was listen man, listen man.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
By the way, in all that, why is that old
stormtrooper limping?

Speaker 6 (37:02):
By the way, every appearance I've had on this podcast,
that's the most offended that Donald ever looked.

Speaker 3 (37:07):
That moment right there. I saw pure actual anger.

Speaker 2 (37:10):
Sudden before before before the black Stormtrooper takes off his helmet,
you see him like holding his back and limping.

Speaker 1 (37:16):
And they're like, I'm just saying, man, stormtroopers can be
old or they could be young. They are military.

Speaker 2 (37:25):
I don't think there's any old Stormtroopers.

Speaker 6 (37:26):
How funny would that be if the Stormtroopers were all
the original Stormtroopers and they take the.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
Later.

Speaker 2 (37:39):
Bill, one of my life goals is to try and
get him in one of the movies. I'll do anything.
I'll turn tricks whatever JJ needs.

Speaker 1 (37:45):
Will you turns?

Speaker 2 (37:46):
I'll turn a trick for JJA whatever he needs.

Speaker 1 (37:51):
No, no, no, no, okay, hold on, let's not concentrate
on JJJ is great, right, Let's focus on what you want. Meloney.

Speaker 2 (38:00):
Oh, I remember I hit up Dave Filoni when you
were at the premiere. I said directly, you've got to
hire this and he did. He put you in the cartoon.

Speaker 3 (38:06):
And Jon Favreau, John Favreau, good guy, you know what
you know?

Speaker 6 (38:10):
In Another Angle is one of Charlotte's best friends, and
Zach and Don.

Speaker 3 (38:14):
You guys will love her music. She was just on
foul the other night.

Speaker 6 (38:17):
Gracie Abrams, who is another young female singer songwriter. You guys,
when you embrace that music, how organic?

Speaker 3 (38:25):
Is it?

Speaker 6 (38:26):
Just too because she's so talented to suddenly play her
song have her as a guest.

Speaker 3 (38:31):
See what I did?

Speaker 2 (38:32):
Bill, I'm sorry we only play one young woman's pop
music on the show Shot at Lin.

Speaker 3 (38:36):
As it should be as it should be?

Speaker 6 (38:37):
Thank you?

Speaker 3 (38:38):
All right?

Speaker 2 (38:40):
Should we talk about why is Elliott wearing a very
cute nighty on the first night of Friend night She's on.

Speaker 3 (38:48):
I saw that as a moment.

Speaker 6 (38:49):
Is that you, as a producer, you get mad when
you occasionally see moments in shows where you go an
actor actress decision happened that maybe wasn't the best of
the show.

Speaker 3 (39:01):
So like one of them was.

Speaker 6 (39:02):
Every time that I would go down into dailies and
I would be like, why are we digging through so
many takes? And the editor would be like, oh, because
Johnny McGinley decided you wanted to juggle, why you said
this line? Oh my god? And this is one if
I were to bet, I would say that it said Sarah,
you know, Elliott wakes up and that Sarah with wardrobe.

(39:24):
Because you guys were able to control your characters, would
be like, I think I would wake up in an
incredibly adorable nightie. And even in an episode that I
was trying to say I'm moving on from the romantic
relationship with my friend.

Speaker 2 (39:37):
It does feel like a bit of a teasing thing
because like, if this were real life and then she
had really cut it off and said no more sex,
I'm going to see sweat sweatshirt. Yeah, sweatshirt, sweatpants. She's
wearing like a super little sexy little number.

Speaker 3 (39:54):
But I think that's guys and girls.

Speaker 6 (39:55):
You guys all made some decisions for yourself on how
your hair would.

Speaker 3 (39:58):
Look, what you wear. You guys were all pretty. I
mean the shoes.

Speaker 1 (40:01):
You remember when Johnny came back with a bald head?

Speaker 6 (40:04):
Yeah, yeah, no, yeah, Donald, I do.

Speaker 3 (40:09):
I remember that. I remember when Johnny he just talked
about it.

Speaker 6 (40:11):
I remember when he said, maybe I'm gonna experiment with
how words sound.

Speaker 3 (40:17):
It was also super fun.

Speaker 2 (40:20):
Anyway, I was proud of my my first of many
stunts hits in this episode on that lamp lamp. That
lamp hit is gorgeous, very good.

Speaker 1 (40:30):
I broke I did not I did not fall into lamp.

Speaker 3 (40:34):
I did not mark the lamp down.

Speaker 6 (40:35):
But I will tell you and you guys can say
that we in the writer's room had Zach's five best pratfalls,
and two of the top five are in this episode.

Speaker 2 (40:45):
Yeah, there's some good ones and we'll get to them.
But I gotta say the lamp. The thing that makes
the lamp extra funny is that it swings when I
hit it. And then also the sound effect that's on it,
but it's which which always sort of sweetened the comedic pratfall.
But that that's a good one.

Speaker 1 (41:01):
That was a great one.

Speaker 2 (41:02):
And then of course when I the next one right
away is when I I Sarah parks her truck so
tightly and I have to squeeze out of the of
the passenger side and then I fall on the ground.
That was a good one too.

Speaker 3 (41:14):
Yeah, that's one of your top three.

Speaker 2 (41:16):
And that one comes with.

Speaker 3 (41:19):
There's there's a.

Speaker 6 (41:20):
Chance, there is a chance, and I'm I don't want
to say it definitively. You have to go back and
listen to it that I added the noise.

Speaker 3 (41:28):
No, yes, I did, because often in editing.

Speaker 6 (41:33):
I would go I would do it for you when
it didn't exist on the track, I would.

Speaker 2 (41:39):
I would think, this far into scrubs, you had like
a whole library of.

Speaker 1 (41:46):
Isn't the first, No, No.

Speaker 3 (41:49):
I think there's been a bunch.

Speaker 6 (41:51):
But Donald, we reached a point that if we didn't
have other looping for Zach to do, and I was
editing late, I would just put up a microphone and
add it, because it's no noise that we could all.

Speaker 2 (42:02):
All right, we need to we need to take a break,
We'll be right back.

Speaker 4 (42:11):
And.

Speaker 1 (42:14):
We're back.

Speaker 2 (42:16):
So basically one of the themes of this episode seems
to be, and I don't know if it's true. We
can have Joel way In as the as the female
voice of the podcast, but Elliott or Bill or I
guess the writer or who was Gabby Allen, I believe
is saying women can move on from this sort of
thing quicker than men. I don't know if that's a.

Speaker 1 (42:37):
Universal truths so we think that's true. I think that's true.
I think women are very and this is speaking as
a man, so obviously take it with a grain of salt. Uh.
I think women are easier to say no, I don't
want to do that anymore, even if they do want
to do that and they know it's bad for them,

(42:58):
whereas a man, whereas JD's running around thinking about his
privates and what Elliott did to his privates and not
necessarily what the relationship was, where As Elliott was like,
if I continue doing this, I'm going to get in
a relationship with this guy.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
So what you're saying is women maybe have the ability
to control their urges more and say this is bad
long term I'm going to stop. Whereas a man stereotypically
would be like, fuck it all, I just want to
be with you. Let's be impulsive and do it now.

Speaker 1 (43:32):
Right, Let's do it now. Fuck the consequences.

Speaker 6 (43:35):
I would only tell you, guys that even though you're
doing it gender based, I think these things are character based.

Speaker 3 (43:40):
And we would.

Speaker 6 (43:41):
Say that we established Elliott on this show as someone
that is able to compartmentalize things and take emotions out
of it.

Speaker 3 (43:49):
Like you guys remember with Scott.

Speaker 6 (43:50):
Foley that she was able to be like I really
dig you, but it doesn't work right now. I'm trying
to do medicine, so this is over. And he was
like a head of her heels in love with her
in our heads. She is somebody that right or wrong,
is able to go. I'm going to focus on this
now and that's over. I'm going to focus on this
now and that's over. And j D is a character
that lives in the emotional world and never being able
to let go of that stuff and noting.

Speaker 2 (44:11):
But Bill, I think you had her say. I mean, again,
it's herb Elliot's point of view, but I think she
said something like, oh, your guys can women doesn't someone
make it about gender in the show? Am I wrong?

Speaker 6 (44:23):
I don't remember, but if we, if we did, it
would be because Gabby Allen, who is one of the
dominant you know, not only female voices, but voices on
the show, is without a doubt that type of very strong,
kind of.

Speaker 3 (44:39):
Altogether woman as far as she is mentally such.

Speaker 2 (44:42):
Well, what do you think about it?

Speaker 1 (44:43):
I lean toward the JD side of things, where I'm
like when and Joel, I'll let you answer this, but
I feel like I'm like the person like my wife
will be like, that's it, there's no more of that.
We're not doing that anymore. And I'll be I'm the
one that says, please, let's just try one more time.
You know what I mean, Joelle, I'm sorry to cut
you off.

Speaker 5 (45:03):
I liked Bill's description of it's person specific because I
am definitely not the person who's gonna I can't compartmentalize.
It's all happening at once, all the time, always, and
I have to see everything from all the different angles.

Speaker 1 (45:16):
The ability to just be like no, but.

Speaker 5 (45:18):
We're still for to be like I don't. I can't
switch emotionally that fast.

Speaker 3 (45:22):
It's too much.

Speaker 1 (45:24):
But but if you knew somebody was wrong for you
or right for you, but you needed to focus on
your job.

Speaker 5 (45:31):
You're about to make me reveal so much about myself.

Speaker 2 (45:33):
Oh good, this is how Oprah does it.

Speaker 1 (45:37):
This just end, Joe. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome to
the show. Joe.

Speaker 2 (45:44):
Wow.

Speaker 1 (45:48):
When dealing with relationships and breaking up, you find it
easier to still like this is what this is how
I look at it. Like, you break up with somebody
and then there's that little bit of excess that happens
right before you. Guys are like, you know what, that's it,
We're done right. The trickle right, that's that little trickle

(46:10):
which is usually brought on by the dude. The dude
from my opinion, as I said, I'm speaking for self
from my side of things, usually when I broke up
with somebody, there was that extra trickle that I pushed
forward even though I knew this could go the wrong way.
And then it was finally the lady that I was

(46:30):
doing this too, that was like, you need to either
shit or get off the pot. One two. You know what,
do you think I am a toy that you can
just come and do what you want to do? You
know what I mean.

Speaker 2 (46:45):
This was me by the way.

Speaker 3 (46:46):
Yeah, by the way, is Zach Zach just survey knows?
Can I hear you say? What do you think I'm
a toy that you just do what you want to do?

Speaker 2 (46:56):
What do you think I'm a toy that you can
just do what you want to do? You go, you
go and play your sports and then you just come
and use me.

Speaker 1 (47:04):
No, that's exactly what you said. That is exactly.

Speaker 2 (47:09):
But you know what I mean.

Speaker 1 (47:10):
Are you don't You don't fall into that category. You're
not the person I mean I'm I'm totally the person
that's like I'm gonna try and have my cake and
I'm gonna try and eat it too.

Speaker 5 (47:19):
Yeah, this is why I don't do a lot of dating.
People are terrible for me, and people are like, why
are you with this person?

Speaker 1 (47:23):
I don't know.

Speaker 5 (47:25):
You never like anybody who's necessarily a good person.

Speaker 3 (47:28):
It's just a long stream of life. You stick with
that that's gonna work out for you.

Speaker 2 (47:34):
I definitely.

Speaker 7 (47:40):
I was.

Speaker 2 (47:41):
I was in a relationship once where the girl ended
it and it was so cut off so quickly. It
wasn't let anything happen. It was just kind of like
she didn't give any trickle. There was no dot dot dot.

Speaker 6 (47:52):
This this episode is based on that. Do you know
that what that that thing from your real life? This
episode is based on it.

Speaker 2 (48:00):
Oh well yeah, this particular person kind of just basically
put their handout and was like, buddy.

Speaker 3 (48:06):
Buy because it brings up, it brings up.

Speaker 2 (48:10):
I was like, buddies. And again, it wasn't like obviously
if someone if something happened, then then there's more, you know,
if someone was unfaithful or someone or if there was
a big argument. This was none of that. This is
like a should we be friends? Yeah? And then I
had such feelings of like I'm unsure and dot dot
DoD and trickle trickle trickle, and she's like paths with

(48:33):
her handout, and I was like, what now.

Speaker 6 (48:35):
This is one of my favorite things that I wanted
to talk about because this is one of the first
times I remember the advantage of becoming really close with
the cast and crew and writers on a TV show
is I didn't know if you'd bring it up, Zach,
but you and I were getting you know, we're hanging
out and being friends, and you told me about this
in your life in a way that you know, it
was obviously affecting you emostly, and you were hurt. And

(48:58):
I think I was a decent friend when you talk
about it. But then when I left, I'm like, this
will be a pretty good episode.

Speaker 2 (49:10):
That shit happened all over the place, dude, And it's
funny now rewatching the show twenty years later, Donald and
I are both seeing things, were like, wait, that was
us that weekend, you remember, Like I think at the
time we at the time we didn't notice. But a
little by a little, it became our lives. You were going,
you were going like, oh, I don't know what we're
gonna write this week. Oh I have an idea.

Speaker 3 (49:31):
Yeah, it's like, Donald, anything going on in your life,
you want to tell me about real quick, because we're
all stuck.

Speaker 1 (49:37):
You know, what really became true was after Scrubs was
over and I met my wife. It really became Turk,
Carla and JD in my life in real life, like
I would go out, Casey and I would go out,
and our partner for everything that we did was always

(49:59):
Zach and it would be like, let's bring him out
so he could meet someone, and yeah, that's a that's
a that's a weird, dynastic. Take care of him, right,
let's take care of him. But part of it is
also let's bring some entertainment so that you and I
aren't just staring at each other at the table, looking
at each other. You know, we'll talk about a couple
of things and then like.

Speaker 2 (50:18):
I was like, I was like the court gesture that
you brought out.

Speaker 6 (50:21):
It's also super fun for Donald and Casey be like,
also at the end of the night, we get to
decide if he gets to have sex with someone or not.

Speaker 3 (50:29):
Case handles if he did.

Speaker 1 (50:31):
Meet someone, we'd be like, no, she's not for you,
or it's totally for you, or right, you're absolutely right, bro.

Speaker 3 (50:37):
That's super fun.

Speaker 1 (50:38):
It is a lot of fun. I'll show you and
christ have done that a couple of times with him
as well.

Speaker 3 (50:43):
Yeah. Also a Zach Yes, oh yeah, I was forever
a bride'smaid, never a bride.

Speaker 1 (50:48):
Well those days are overbuddy, maybe those.

Speaker 2 (50:50):
Days are We'll see. Hey, Nurse Roberts says, if he
turns out to be her brother, this is better than
my story. Yeah, Nurse Roberts had something.

Speaker 1 (51:03):
Yeah, she's slaves every time, man, Alona dude, every time.

Speaker 6 (51:07):
Now, now, he's Now he's all mad, yeah, mad, Oh
my god, I laughed so hard.

Speaker 2 (51:14):
Now he's all mad. But also I go, I go,
I don't feel weird, and Sarah goes, I don't feel weird,
and she goes, I feel weird.

Speaker 6 (51:21):
Well, you guys realize we're about to get to well
you passed by the way the too minute. One of
the first Johnny was he did experiment with the word naughty. Yeah,
and I said, I think he says it is kanatei
or something, not Tai, not ti. I love Johnny c Man.
That guy is so prepared and so good. But for
me this I was so happy, and I want to
lead you guys in because you can tell I don't

(51:43):
even know how it came to be. But at three
forty or Richard Kind is on the show, and I
think this is his uh.

Speaker 3 (51:48):
I believe it's his first appearance as a hypochondriac. And
for whatever reason, on our show, the.

Speaker 6 (51:55):
Cast, sometimes the oddest lions would become iconic for our
group of things that you guys said for years and years,
and I never understood why.

Speaker 3 (52:05):
One of them was I have yabah. It was just
to hear that again.

Speaker 6 (52:09):
Oh it wasn't about that that made all you guys
so you guys all said it for years.

Speaker 1 (52:14):
Yeah, you go ahead, Zach.

Speaker 2 (52:16):
I just think Richard Kind is so fucking funny, and
everything he says makes me laugh. He's like, he looks
like he's like a he's like a muppet, like he's
got this giant mouth. And he's a really good actor.
One of the things about great comedic actors is that
they're often really good dramatic actors as well. Richard Kind
has a little short monologue at the end of this

(52:37):
episode that gave me goosebumps, and he spends so poignant yes,
and he spends the whole first part of the episode
being hysterical.

Speaker 3 (52:45):
Oh and have you ever Yeah, have you ever had
sex with a chimp? If you have, yeah, I have
been to the zoo.

Speaker 2 (52:49):
Yes, it wasn't sex with the chimp.

Speaker 1 (52:52):
It's like, have you have you have you been around primeates?

Speaker 2 (52:55):
Exotic primates? I had been to the zoo. Continue. But
also he's just so funny. In fact, every time I
run into him for the last twenty years, which is
probably once a year, I always go I have yah
bah and he starts laughing.

Speaker 1 (53:09):
Well, he has one line in the show that we
don't talk about that made me laugh so hard, and
I and and and I'm gonna do a bad line reading.
But Johnny Cock says to him, so how was your day?
He goes, it was horrible, horrible, It was horrible, and
it made sounds like a dolphin giving birth. I it

(53:32):
sounds like a dolphin.

Speaker 2 (53:34):
It was horrible, horrible.

Speaker 1 (53:37):
It may sounds like a dolphin.

Speaker 2 (53:38):
By the way, and you have Zeltzer come in now.
This is I believe Zeltzer's Bob Clendennan's second episode and
he just I just sorry. I wrote down Bill, you
have to come up with the show for for Bob
Clindennon and Richard Kine because I would watch this shit
out of it. Two of them together are so funny.

Speaker 6 (53:57):
Well, I look, you guys. I gotta give you guys
a compliment. Sometimes I get grief. But as doing an
interview the other day that somebody said about Ted Lasso, oh,
it'll be weird seeing a show of yours without the
Bill Lawrence players in it.

Speaker 3 (54:09):
And what they sometimes criticized was like every cast.

Speaker 6 (54:13):
Member of Spin City, for the most part, you know
that was available, came and did Scrubs, and now you
and Donald and Sarah and everybody you know on Scrubs
is doing whenever they could other shows of mine, and
then everybody on Cougartown has done you know, Bob's Bob
Guindan and ended up being on Cougartown. It's for me
such a gift that you guys will keep working with me,

(54:35):
but also that you guys rich always talked about it,
how kind and Barry Boswick talked about it, how kind
you guys were to the you know, the previous gang
that came in to be on your show.

Speaker 3 (54:45):
You know what I mean. He loved it there.

Speaker 2 (54:46):
Well, dude, I mean from our point, dude, we're working
with stars.

Speaker 1 (54:50):
Dude, you're working with freaking big time comedians who crushed
Go ahead, zachly Well.

Speaker 2 (54:54):
I was going to say the exact same thing for us. Bill.
It was just like we we Donald and I as
anyone who listens to this, no, grew up on sitcoms,
grew up on loving TV comedy, and you're bringing Barry
Boswick and Richard Kind. I mean, these are guys who
we just always thought were so funny, and it wasn't like,
you know, it was a favorite we were just happy
to be, you know, bouncing the ball back and forth

(55:15):
with them to use. That's a sports analogy, Billy, because
you often bounce a ball back and forth when you're playing.

Speaker 3 (55:20):
Sure, I mean it's the way you score in a
lot of different games.

Speaker 2 (55:23):
Yes, you just got to get the ball in the hole.
Get the ball in the hole.

Speaker 3 (55:27):
I have yahba.

Speaker 6 (55:29):
Can I tell you a weird time thing that I
really liked and you guys will remember how often he
did this? At five sixteen, I remember telling Ken Jenkins
early and Scrubs that one of my favorite things that
he was great at doing. I think an actor had
told me once that it's very hard to fake laugh,
you know sometimes, you know, and Ken was so good

(55:53):
at doing a raucous, believable laugh that when he turned.

Speaker 3 (55:56):
Away, it immediately stops, and you know how you know,
how fake it was.

Speaker 6 (56:01):
Just My favorite one ever was when you guys changed
the sign of sacred heart to sacred fart in a
different episodes and Ken, by the way, and Ken Jenkins
is able to go, have you guys.

Speaker 2 (56:12):
Seen the sign?

Speaker 3 (56:15):
But seriously, but seriously, you shouldn't analyze And this was
one of the first ones.

Speaker 6 (56:23):
That he did that because I said, Ken, my favorite
thing is when you rat laugh raucously and it's obviously fake,
and then you turn and lecture one of these guys
and he turns and immediately lectures Donald about that older
woman in there by the way.

Speaker 1 (56:35):
I have a question. I have a sincere question about Ken.
When you when when you put him on the show,
were you aware of how funny he could be? No, man,
you had no right, okay, because he was Mary boss Ware.

Speaker 6 (56:49):
Because when we hired Barry Bosswick, he was known as
a dramatic actor on Spin City, and I thought, Ken,
he has been on Home Front and in these great
giant John Sales movies and allays as a judge, always
as a Colonel Hiroshima.

Speaker 3 (57:03):
He would explode your DVR and I go, what a
good bad guy.

Speaker 6 (57:06):
And he'll just be an amazing dramatic actor and he'll say,
you know, ridiculous stuff, very straight like Barry did. But
then he was so funny and so clever and such
a good actor that he was the character that we
had to change the most because we were under utilizing him,
you know, we had him as a clichet, and then
he became more kind of rounded out.

Speaker 1 (57:26):
We looked back and he looked back at the show
now and we you know, there are there are three
characters that really stick out for me, and maybe because
they were always in my peripheral and not necessarily people
who and I take that back. I worked with Judy
a lot, but Judy Ken and Sarah, Holy shit, dude,

(57:47):
I watched the show now and I'm blown away. Every
fucking episode Sarah, look, I would have. I I get
why freaking dudes would be like, so, what's up with
what's with Sarah? Chuck uh and called the set to
try and come by. Dude.

Speaker 2 (58:04):
I hadn't noline we were making it.

Speaker 1 (58:07):
But when we were making the show, I had no clue.
I had no I didn't pay attention to any of
this stuff. I didn't pay attention to what Ken was doing.
I'm in scenes with Judy and I'm not thinking about
Holy shit, this girl is fucking running circles around me
and I'm sitting here. I'm sitting there just trying to
freaking up. I'm gonna I'm gonna hit show. I'm doing

(58:29):
my thing, you know what I mean? Yeah, the three
of them, Oh my gosh. I had when I look
back at it now. I'm like, I really wish I
would have paid attention because there are so many great
lessons to be learned from them.

Speaker 3 (58:42):
All you guys were assassins. Man, it's uh. You know
you're selling yourself shirt, Donald, No, I.

Speaker 2 (58:49):
Am well aware of the I'm well aware about how
good I am.

Speaker 1 (58:53):
Of what's happened. Because I've been on scrubs. I'm well
aware of you know what I mean, and and I've
learned how to you know, I've learned a lot from
doing the show. I think I could have learned a
little bit more if I would have just been a
less egotistic, less egotistical and paid attention to my cast.
Makes because those three, just like I paid attention to Johnny,

(59:14):
I paid attention to Zach, and I paid attention to myself,
but I didn't pay attention to those three.

Speaker 2 (59:20):
I agree with Donald in that in that going back
twenty years later and watching this, you see things you
didn't see at all. And I and I totally agree
that you you know, we watched the episode, you know,
if you weren't in a scene with someone. I don't
know how many times you watched, Donald, but I probably
only watched the episode once when it when it aired.
When it aired, I would I would, you know, and
so you never really studied it. And now kind of

(59:41):
going back with this podcast being the purpose of it,
you see like, holy shit, look what Sarah's doing, Like well,
like she's really good. She's really good in this episode too.

Speaker 6 (59:51):
I would even extend it to one of the coolest
things about doing a hospital show, as you guys have
made me look at it again and you set up
with rich kind was the opportunity for actors and actresses
to come in and be patients and know that they
had one scene that they were going to get to
try and knock something out of the park. And as
you guys have made me revisit this, the amount of
people that absolutely surprised me, do you know what I

(01:00:14):
mean in an individual scene when it's like, hey, you're
not really even part of the cast. But even that
kid that ended up getting a sitcom in the finale
when you tell him he had Huntington's disease, Zach. You
know his name is Josh something. You know, Josh Cook,
Josh I don't know, but yeah, there's just so so many.

Speaker 2 (01:00:32):
Patients well furious, which means we'll know soon.

Speaker 6 (01:00:35):
There's so many patients, you know, rich being one of them,
Like Donald pointed it out, when it's like, oh, funny, funny, funny.
And then when Richard Kaine goes, you can say what
you want, but I knew you were messing with me,
and you were you know, you know what I mean,
And it's so poignant. You're like, oh, that was one
of my favorite things about this show.

Speaker 4 (01:00:52):
Man.

Speaker 2 (01:00:52):
Well, one of my favorite point moments Bill is when
Rob says, dude, what were her boobs like?

Speaker 1 (01:00:57):
Todd? I'm standing right here, goes.

Speaker 2 (01:01:00):
Sorry, what were your boobs like.

Speaker 4 (01:01:03):
You?

Speaker 2 (01:01:04):
That he goes, sorry, what are your boobs like you?

Speaker 6 (01:01:07):
Guys have to know that this episode, and I wanted
to give you some trivia, was the absolute most debate
we ever had about you know, how do we have
to define Todd as a real character in the writer's room?

Speaker 3 (01:01:22):
Okay, And I'll tell you why, because he becomes a dog.

Speaker 2 (01:01:28):
Yes, he's supposedly the best surgeon in the hospital, but
he chases an invisible ball.

Speaker 6 (01:01:34):
And by the way, and it was already a problem
because he in your fantasy when he's fighting that older woman.

Speaker 3 (01:01:40):
He then said, and as Todd is always horny.

Speaker 6 (01:01:44):
That should end with them furiously making out, which is
also so it's it's to me in this episode, he's
going to be a sexual harassment pre me too. He's
going to have a intense sexual relationship in a fan
of see with an older woman, and then he's going
to be a competent surgeon that also fetches tennis balls.

Speaker 1 (01:02:06):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (01:02:08):
But Bill, when he wrestles that woman, I laugh, I
was belly laughing. It was so fucking funny. Again, I'm assuming.
I'm assuming she was a senior citizens stunt woman because
they're really wrestling, like he was throwing her around.

Speaker 1 (01:02:24):
Yes, I don't know. Well, yeah, because she does the
car smash and everything.

Speaker 2 (01:02:29):
Yeah, she definitely, and then they made out. We should
ask Rob if there was tongue involved in that or.

Speaker 4 (01:02:36):
This This is.

Speaker 6 (01:02:38):
Rob.

Speaker 2 (01:02:38):
It's time for another segment of Ask Rob Rob.

Speaker 1 (01:02:41):
No talk to talk.

Speaker 2 (01:02:43):
Oh, time for another episode of Todd Talk Dan. Some
little jingle that you come up with Todd Talk Rob.
What was it like making out with that senior citizen
and was their tongue involved? Was her breath?

Speaker 1 (01:02:58):
Nice?

Speaker 2 (01:02:58):
Tell us what that scene? Did you did you did
you sort of summon? Okay, the angst of wrestling her
into a kiss.

Speaker 10 (01:03:10):
To wrestle the old lady. It felt good, natural, just
felt right. You haven't really lived until you wrestled the
guilt to the ground and gilded her lily, nice little
open mouth smooch there at the end to seal the deal.
Guilt five the Todd.

Speaker 6 (01:03:27):
Of Pruz, Thank you, Rob, Thank you, and Rob thanks
for obviously preparing that, because it felt like you worked
on it, that you wrote it out ahead of time.

Speaker 1 (01:03:35):
I loved it.

Speaker 2 (01:03:39):
I know he writes out of answers, but maybe you
know he's doing his best.

Speaker 3 (01:03:43):
I will tell you I'm jumping ahead. I'm jumping ahead.

Speaker 6 (01:03:46):
But the argument started Zach with Originally the scene with
Todd uh is you had a tennis ball in your
hand anyways, and you threw it, and that's how you
rid of him, and then somebody it's not me. I
wish I could take credit for it. One of the
writers said, no, JD should pretend to have a ball

(01:04:07):
throw it, and that Todd goes, and then Todd brings
back a tennis ball and he.

Speaker 3 (01:04:12):
Found somewhere.

Speaker 6 (01:04:14):
Somewhere in the hospital, and that became there's a writer's
room that became like a two hour fight of going
it's too dumb that JD throws an imaginary ball, and
that writer was like, but that's what's so funny about dogs.

Speaker 3 (01:04:26):
You can throw an imaginary go look for it. Well, yeah,
but he's a surgeon.

Speaker 2 (01:04:31):
And then you call it back later in the in
the lobby, he goes and chases the ball again, right
to the janitor. You know what's funny. Rob does this
this subtle thing when I'm holding the ball, but he's
just kind of like bouncing like a dogwood.

Speaker 5 (01:04:52):
Head.

Speaker 3 (01:04:53):
Yeah, he's just ready for it.

Speaker 2 (01:04:55):
Josh cook he's correct, Bill, Josh Cooking was the actor
there you.

Speaker 3 (01:04:58):
Go so at seven oh four or this is really interesting.
And she was a Sarah Lancaster guest.

Speaker 2 (01:05:03):
I know she was back. We were no one. No
one answered me, but I said, Sarah Lancaster was back.

Speaker 4 (01:05:08):
Bill.

Speaker 2 (01:05:08):
This is I have decided in the eight and a
half years that I was on this program, it's the
most unrealistic thing that you ever wrote, was that JD
can't seem to get it up to give a shop girl.

Speaker 3 (01:05:20):
I feel it's the opposite of that.

Speaker 6 (01:05:23):
I feel that you're just awkward around her because she's stunning,
and that you just can't you just can't put your
game on.

Speaker 3 (01:05:30):
That's why.

Speaker 2 (01:05:33):
That makes That makes a tiny bit of sense.

Speaker 1 (01:05:35):
That makes a lot of sense. That makes way more
sense than you being like you want to do what
I don't think I could do that.

Speaker 6 (01:05:46):
The sauce thing killed me, by the way, Zach, what
I think it was. I really I love Italian food.

Speaker 3 (01:05:53):
I love so good with sauce.

Speaker 2 (01:05:55):
Italian Italian people are so good at making sauce.

Speaker 3 (01:06:01):
Was so bad on a date.

Speaker 2 (01:06:02):
He has nothing to say on the day. That's what
he That's what he's got.

Speaker 3 (01:06:05):
There's a good tribute thing with her. Here's a good tribute.
Oh I know, I like him.

Speaker 2 (01:06:09):
Gift Shop Girl is very patient with this guy because
he's just he's boring conversation. He doesn't want to make
out she's really she's really poor. Poor gift shop girl.

Speaker 3 (01:06:20):
Well she you know, by the way, this is how
TV works.

Speaker 6 (01:06:23):
She was one of the only actor actresses that we
wanted in the Hallway and the finale that said yes
that then the network NBC, since we had left NBC, would.

Speaker 3 (01:06:32):
Not allow her to come do that one line in
the hallway because she was a regular on Chuck.

Speaker 1 (01:06:40):
Are you serious?

Speaker 3 (01:06:41):
I'm serious.

Speaker 6 (01:06:42):
They didn't allow her or Masioca to be in our finale, remember,
so Frank was because they were both one was Chuck
and one was Heroes and and and we had left
NBC and gone to a different network, so they're like, nope,
can't even be there to wave goodbye.

Speaker 2 (01:06:56):
So I remember early on, well, when Jason Bateman was
on Arrested Development and I saw on Scrubs. We were
all at some fancy event, Bill and the presidents of
the networks were there, and we were all drinking heavily,
and well, not Jason, but you and I and I

(01:07:17):
think the presidents of the networks were and we were like,
let's just go negotiate this right now. And and I
think we like went to the Fox guy like can
Jason come on do a spot on Scrubs? And he
was like sure. And then we're like, okay, good, Let's
go to the NBC guy, Can I go do this
little spot on rest Development? They're like sure, They're like
all right, done, And that's.

Speaker 3 (01:07:35):
Always asked when people have drinks in their hands.

Speaker 2 (01:07:37):
That's we both ended up being able to do cameos
on each other's shows.

Speaker 1 (01:07:41):
That can go but bill that could go bad. That
could go good, or it could go bad.

Speaker 3 (01:07:45):
Yeah, oh yeah. You also sometimes get a very quick no.

Speaker 2 (01:07:47):
Right no, or you can end up getting hammered and
nugging him, like and nugging the head of the network.

Speaker 1 (01:07:54):
Yeah.

Speaker 6 (01:07:55):
You know. The the most I ever got in trouble
for something like that was, you know, I think you
guys know, you're both actors. You're allowed to do like
three guest spots or something by contract on other shows,
and you always have to ask.

Speaker 3 (01:08:06):
And Sarah had done a ton already on How I
Met Your.

Speaker 6 (01:08:08):
Mother because she played Stella, this character that people thought
might be the mom. And Carter and Craig, who loved
Scrubs and who in fact probably would have been writing
on it, but they created their own show, you know,
right when you know we were kind of trying to
bring them over, called up and said, hey, can Sarah
come back on the show and do a bunch of episodes?
And I'm like, contractually, I don't think she could be

(01:08:29):
allowed to do it. They're like, well, we've written them
and we got to do it. What's the best angle?
And I said, the best angle is to say I
said yes, but to tell no one and just have
her do them. Yes, And she when she went and
did them, and we got a call kind of in
the middle of it, you know that, I was like, oh, yeah,
I didn't really you know, I had to play dumb

(01:08:49):
and go like guy said, it was fine because it
didn't upset our production schedule and blah blah blah.

Speaker 3 (01:08:53):
But she wouldn't have been allowed otherwise.

Speaker 2 (01:08:55):
Yeah, but that was a different that was a different network,
right right.

Speaker 6 (01:08:58):
How I met your mother's on CBS and she ended
up doing like you're allowed to do three on a show,
but you're not allowed to be a recurt like it.

Speaker 2 (01:09:05):
When she was making out with Radner, I felt it
just didn't feel right to me. We Josh and I
look a little bit alike, and I just felt like
her character was cheating on JD.

Speaker 3 (01:09:15):
He's Shazam now, you know, he's he got to be
a superhero. He should No, no, no, that's that's no,
that's zach Levy.

Speaker 1 (01:09:22):
That's Zachary Levi.

Speaker 2 (01:09:23):
Oh yeah, exactly. I mentioned jo were talking about girl
hooked up with exactly Sarah Chalk hooked up with Josh Radner,
whose character I don't even know his name because I
never saw how I met your mother? Did you you
watched it? Donald?

Speaker 4 (01:09:37):
No, I do it.

Speaker 1 (01:09:38):
I don't watch TV like that.

Speaker 3 (01:09:39):
Okay, Oh A lot on it all right?

Speaker 6 (01:09:43):
Eleven twenty nine, Zach, eleven twenty nine is your is
also in your top three pratfalls because you mentioned her
as sliding over.

Speaker 3 (01:09:50):
My favorite thing about that, can I tell you?

Speaker 6 (01:09:52):
Is so we thought you could do it anyways, but
you did it once in rehearsal and it was good
looking but a little slower.

Speaker 3 (01:09:59):
And I don't know if you're remember this, uh the hood,
I said, I said, what I think I'd like to
do is wax the hood. Yeah, And they're like and
they're like that, you know that could be that could
really hurt Zach. And I'm feeling good about waxing the hood.

Speaker 2 (01:10:15):
I remember that. I remember I did it. I don't
even know if it was written, but you and I
came up with it as a funny thing, like in rehearsal,
I think, And then you were like, you know, it'd
be really funny if we if we wax the hood.
And I think the stunt guys are like, yeah, but dude,
he can go flying and.

Speaker 3 (01:10:30):
Go like twenty feet.

Speaker 2 (01:10:30):
Yeah, I feel good about it.

Speaker 1 (01:10:35):
I'm gonna tell you something right now, that moment reminds
me of like, you know, your favorite movie, Like in
your favorite movies at the end of the movie the
hero runs and jumps over the door and jumps into
the car and stuff like that, And it really looked
like it was gonna be one of those moments. The
only problem with it was was the pad was just
a little too high, kind of see you see him bounce? Yeah,

(01:10:58):
you see you bounce.

Speaker 2 (01:10:59):
Well, not if you're not looking for it. I mean,
I cannot I can't do that. I couldn't have done
that without a pad. Dude in my head, in.

Speaker 3 (01:11:07):
My head, and it would have been great, So we
would have used it.

Speaker 6 (01:11:09):
There was a small chance that he was gonna with
the wax overshoot the pad.

Speaker 3 (01:11:17):
And just.

Speaker 2 (01:11:20):
Because I yell, I go Telly ho. What's so funny
about it is a I'm trying to make Elliott jealous
and I'm trying to look good for give shop girl,
and I just humiliate myself in front of both. I
love that. It's so funny.

Speaker 3 (01:11:35):
It made me so happy.

Speaker 6 (01:11:37):
You guys mentioned as Oh, by the way, there's one
of our best cowboy switches at the twelve minute mark
when Kelso stuntman rolls out of the car.

Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
Yeah, you're going to fast, You're going to fast.

Speaker 3 (01:11:48):
I'm sorry, I got excited. I did a lot of
time checks on this one.

Speaker 2 (01:11:52):
To remind the audience what a cowboy switches. It's when
we creatively, without cutting the camera, switch between the stuntman
and the real So if you look at that car stunt,
the stuntman comes rolling out of a moving car and
he comes far enough towards the camera that he goes
off screen, and then where Ken was crouching and able
to pop right up and it seamlessly looks like Ken

(01:12:13):
did the stunt, and that was really good. I don't
know if that was Chris Kocher or well, this is
Chris Kotcher's first episode. He directed, and he did a
really good job.

Speaker 1 (01:12:21):
Chris.

Speaker 2 (01:12:21):
He's I wanted to mention I got goosebumps when Johnny
c tells Richard Kine that he's sick. I thought that
was so powerful and he kind of has to eat
crow and go, holy shit, look at this chart. You're sick.

Speaker 6 (01:12:38):
And Richard kin with a really interesting moment that you
can tell he probably secretly didn't want to be sick.
He likes you know, he likes the attention of being
a hypochondrict, but he's never looks forward to being sick.

Speaker 3 (01:12:49):
You know. Yeah, I really like that.

Speaker 1 (01:12:52):
Yeah, that was to watch Richard is a lot of
fun because you don't know when it's coming. You really
really don't know when it's coming. Like on the show,
we've gotten to the point where we're gonna you know,
there's a setup coming. You know, something's gonna happen. And
when it happens, Richard even plays it off like oh okay,

(01:13:14):
and then it sinks in and it hurts and he's like,
oh shit, I'm a I'm sick. Yeah, and you know,
his his fake outs, his fake outs in the show
are great, Like later on he'll come back and he
and I have like two episodes I think together.

Speaker 3 (01:13:31):
Yeah. And I love that courtroom scene.

Speaker 6 (01:13:34):
Yeah, I mean, I mean, you know the scene in
the around the table where Sam Lloyd Rip you know,
has what I think is the greatest pratfall. Even kudos
to Zach and Scrubs history on that one. That one's
pretty amazing.

Speaker 2 (01:13:45):
What's that one?

Speaker 6 (01:13:46):
That's one's when Sam Lloyd is so hard to do
is arguing that Joanna Marguis and Donald and he gets
very sweaty, and he said, I said, you have to
figure out a way to knock yourself out. And Sam said,
my hand sweat is gonna make me slip on the
table and I'm gonna slam the side of my face
into this table and then fall off screen.

Speaker 3 (01:14:06):
And he there was no pad. He just did it.
It was It's fantastic.

Speaker 2 (01:14:09):
He rushed that. I assumed that there was some some
trick to that. I didn't know he did.

Speaker 6 (01:14:14):
There is no trick except we said you have to
do it hard enough that when we had the sound effect,
it looks painful.

Speaker 3 (01:14:20):
And he's like, I got this.

Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
Hey, We're gonna go to a quick break and when
we come back, we will have a guest and I
will have a genius question.

Speaker 1 (01:14:30):
We'll be right back, and our guest is here giving
up for Anthony, who wore a suit.

Speaker 3 (01:14:43):
Makes me happy.

Speaker 2 (01:14:45):
There's applause, Damn thunders all. Nice.

Speaker 1 (01:14:48):
Hey, I was I thought that Oprah didn't do the
Oprah voice anymore, and therefore I thought it was funny
that I was bringing the Oprah Winfrey Show voice back.

Speaker 2 (01:14:59):
When did you just she does it? When did you
decide to not do the Oprah voice? What are you
talking about?

Speaker 1 (01:15:04):
No, I'm not saying I'm not.

Speaker 4 (01:15:05):
No.

Speaker 3 (01:15:05):
He thought he was paying homage to something that's over.
But she still does she still does it.

Speaker 2 (01:15:10):
Oh yeah, I haven't. Where have you heard her? Oprah?

Speaker 1 (01:15:12):
So I watched CBS this morning in the morning, I
watched CBS in the morning and Gail King's on it,
and Gail King and Oprah are best friends and they
just had a book club. Think like they still continue
some of the things that Oprah did on her show.
And Oprah had a book club segment on CBS this
morning and she did it and I was like, holy shit,

(01:15:34):
I sound like Oprah. So, ladies and gentlemen, give it
up for any.

Speaker 2 (01:15:41):
Anthony. How are you?

Speaker 3 (01:15:42):
Welk you so much.

Speaker 2 (01:15:42):
Welcome to Fake Doctor's Real Friends.

Speaker 4 (01:15:45):
Thank you, Zach. It's such an honor to be on.
We really appreciate you, know, you having us on, and
it's such a great opportunity.

Speaker 2 (01:15:52):
Are you saying we are you? Is it a royal
we are you?

Speaker 1 (01:15:54):
Are you?

Speaker 2 (01:15:54):
Are you royal?

Speaker 4 (01:15:56):
No? No, my apologies, my apologies. My wife is up
stairs and you know, of course I share everything with her,
so you should.

Speaker 2 (01:16:05):
They don't, they don't know your story, so any was exciting.

Speaker 4 (01:16:09):
Thank you, thank you, and it's it's something that's great
in part other ways it's it's not. But you know,
part of the reason we reached out was we really
loved how authentic Scrubs was and how you made all
of the characters you know, your own, each of you
did in such a great way that you know, last year,

(01:16:33):
my wife and I actually lost a little girl a
couple of weeks before she was due, and we had
a tremendous experience with the doctors and nurses that were
at the hospital and helped us through that whole process
that we started, you know, working on a project and

(01:16:54):
actually are are working on what's called a bereavement room
right now with the hospital that we lost our little
girl in in the Cleveland, Ohio area. And so from
that respect, you know, when I rewatched all of Scrubs,
I went through it in about a week and a
half earlier this year, it just made me think about how,

(01:17:15):
you know, how much we appreciated all that the doctors did,
and again that authenticity that you all brought to all
of the show, and you know we are. We're thankful
for that. We really appreciate being able to come on
to the show here today, if it's okay to plug
you know, the fundraiser that we're working on with Cleveland

(01:17:38):
Clinic to kind of do this initial room.

Speaker 2 (01:17:41):
Yeah, tell us. Wow, I think you caught us all speechless.
We're so sorry for your loss, but please tell us
more about it, because I think everyone's interested to know
what you mean by I think I know, but just
tell everyone what the cause is and what a breavement
room is.

Speaker 4 (01:18:01):
Yeah, yeah, no, thank you, thank you. So the cause
is for parents who have what we call still births,
which is generally anybody who loses a child after twenty weeks.
But in any case, anybody who loses a child is
obviously a tough thing, or any family member, which is
why again, we've appreciated everything, and I know I keep

(01:18:23):
saying we, but my wife and I have appreciated listening
to this show and how much you've shown caring for
the essential workers, all the people out there who are
trying to help support each other in this tough time.
But for our bereavement room specifically, it's meant for people
who go through a similar loss to our own, where

(01:18:44):
it creates a home like space for parents. So that way,
for the little time that they get to hold their
little ones, they get to make it feel a little
bit more like home and have bonding moments that just
get to I think, emphasize even more or the great
care that they get from the doctors and the nurses
who help them go through that. And so our goal

(01:19:06):
is to create that space in the hospital and do
it through a website called give dot CCF dot org backslash.
The Butterfly Suite and the Butterfly Sweet is the concept
that my wife and I came up with that we're
hoping starts at this hospital and can expand nationwide because
it's not something that really gets too too much press

(01:19:30):
or notice when people lose children, but it is something
that we know, you know, happens more often than anybody
cares to really recognize.

Speaker 2 (01:19:41):
So Anthony, my understand because I've never heard this before.
When parents have a stillborn are they are they usually
given the opportunity to spend some time with the baby.

Speaker 4 (01:19:56):
It's actually changed a lot in the last few years, thankfully.
Used to be that no, most of the time a
mother and father would never even hold or get to
know their child. It would just kind of be taken
out of the room and you know, go through whatever
burial a parents wanted to do. But now, thankfully they

(01:20:17):
have something called cocots which help keep the child cool
and keep off some of that process that happens after
you pass. And in our case, we spent about eight
or ten hours with our daughter before we kind of
gave her over, and we were very thankful for that.
We even got family photos and other things that organizations

(01:20:39):
are now coming out and helping out with a lot
of that stuff, where a few years ago even you
might not have spent any time with your child.

Speaker 2 (01:20:48):
Wow, was that I'm sorry, I'm just I'm so moved
by this. I've got tears in my eyes. I don't
even know what to say, But I was that something
that you and your wife had to quickly discuss if
you wanted to do that. I imagine it would be
hard for some people. They would say, I don't know
if I could if I could handle that. I mean,

(01:21:10):
as I'm listening to I'm thinking, like, gosh, would I
be able to handle that?

Speaker 4 (01:21:15):
Yeah, it's definitely a whirlwind, but Thankfully we were able
to have some time through the delivery process. It still
took us about a day to have our daughter, that
we were able to think through some of those things.
And the nurses that's where I say we had terrific
care where the original resident that we had, he was

(01:21:38):
the head resident, but he, you know, came in asked
us our daughter's name and would constantly repeat her name
anytime we were talking about delivering her. The nurses helped
us through that whole process that they asked us, you know,
do you want to do this or do you not?
And they kind of helped give us guidance and get

(01:21:58):
us a lot of momento and other things that we
will cherish for the rest of our lives. So it
is an interesting item that, yes, it happens very quickly,
but through the care and support of those people that
we've mentioned, they absolutely helped us do that as best
as we could.

Speaker 3 (01:22:20):
Anthony man, I, I'm bill nice to meet you.

Speaker 6 (01:22:24):
How you doing look the coolest thing and why I
find you so inspiring is the main reason that we
wanted to do this show was because I'm much older
than you. Those of you that can't see Anthony is
a very young, handsome man. It's annoying, and that's good.

Speaker 3 (01:22:42):
He looks sharp.

Speaker 4 (01:22:43):
But the.

Speaker 6 (01:22:46):
Is that, you know, when I was a kid, used
to have a cliche that doctors and nurses, you know,
your parents would want you to be a doctor to
be rich because you can golf all the time and
make tons of money.

Speaker 3 (01:22:57):
And when we started this show, it wasn't about being
a doctor to be rich anymore.

Speaker 6 (01:23:01):
It was too If you went into that industry, being
a nurse or a doctor is because you wanted to
be of service to people, you know. And one of
the things I'm witnessing right now that I find inspiring
in a very cynical time are I don't begrudge anybody
that's feeling beaten down right now or that is very
close to feeling like they should give up.

Speaker 3 (01:23:21):
But what's amazing is when you meet.

Speaker 6 (01:23:23):
Someone like you that goes through something with your wife
and then decides to be of service to others, you know.
And I find that very inspiring amongst people, and specifically
young people like yourself. It gives me optimism in ways
that I don't otherwise always have it.

Speaker 3 (01:23:41):
So thanks man, it's very very cool.

Speaker 6 (01:23:42):
Make sure you mentioned the website again at the end,
because it's a tough one to remember.

Speaker 2 (01:23:46):
We will and Joelle will put it on our page
so people can click on it.

Speaker 1 (01:23:52):
I'm so sorry, man, you just caught me so off guard.

Speaker 4 (01:23:56):
Man, No, I apologize. You guys were having a good
time and I no, no, no, it's important.

Speaker 2 (01:24:04):
It's important. It's sobering.

Speaker 5 (01:24:05):
Like Donald said, positive you some positive news, Anthony, do
you want to get well one means of news? How
close are you to your goal for the briefment room.

Speaker 4 (01:24:16):
Well, we're very close. So we were aiming to raise
about twenty five thousand dollars and we're a little over
twenty one thousand raised already, and so we're very thankful
for all the support that people have provided.

Speaker 1 (01:24:28):
As it is, well, let's get it over there.

Speaker 2 (01:24:30):
I think we'll get it over that. Wa Anthony, will
you be turning? I assume the hospital has said yes
to this and there's a room for it, but it's
going to cost roughly that to convert the room. Is
that what it is?

Speaker 4 (01:24:43):
Yeah? So it's that plus what we're aiming to do
is getting like a full sized bed versus kind of
a twin sized hospital bed in there, so that way,
you know, mom and dad can sleep together, or mom
and mom, how dad and dad. However it is is
set up. But you know in a day, having a
music player, a crib, certain types of things that again

(01:25:04):
make it feel like home. And yes, there is a
space already at the hospital that parents will be able
they'll be able to convert right now and utilize because
we talked longer term about building a space. But this
is maybe a good happy medium for the time being.

Speaker 1 (01:25:21):
All Right, well, let's let's give that website another shout
out again.

Speaker 4 (01:25:27):
Yeah, thank you, thank you. It's give dot c c
F dot org backslash the butterfly. Sweet.

Speaker 5 (01:25:35):
Okay, you have one last piece of information, but I
don't know if you want us to share to all
of our listeners or Okay.

Speaker 4 (01:25:41):
Are thankful that my wife and I are expecting again
and we'll.

Speaker 2 (01:25:48):
Wait when do you do towards the end of October?

Speaker 3 (01:25:53):
That's awesome.

Speaker 2 (01:25:54):
Congratulations dude.

Speaker 3 (01:25:56):
It will not change your life at all. I promise
it's the exact same for you guys as a couple.
It's gonna be no difference.

Speaker 1 (01:26:05):
You know how you guys go all the time and
cod But to know how you guys have all of
this time to yourself and stuff like that. It'll stay
that way.

Speaker 2 (01:26:13):
No, congratulations, Anthony rests. That's a happy ending. And I
just want to say, I'm so moved by people like
you and who go through something like this and then
turn around and go, how can I make a difference
for the next person who has to do this. I

(01:26:35):
just think it's heroic of you to go, Okay, this happened,
how can we make a difference for the next couple.
I just think that that's that's very moving to me,
and I just want to give you accolades for that.

Speaker 4 (01:26:48):
And then we know we're not the only ones for sure,
and there's been so many people who have helped support
us because they've gone through the experience before that we
feel it's just that we try to do the same.
And again, thank you all for bringing it together a
show like you did that gave authenticity that I've heard
so many stories of how many people you've inspired to

(01:27:11):
become doctors that it's it's tremendous as well, So thank
you all.

Speaker 1 (01:27:18):
Anti.

Speaker 6 (01:27:18):
I also I want to tell you I feel a
connection to you because I can tell by the say
the way that you said, we all the time that
you're also like me, you're a little afraid of your
wife and you would get in massive trouble if you didn't.
So tell me what's her Tell me again, what's her name?

Speaker 3 (01:27:35):
Just so we remember.

Speaker 4 (01:27:36):
Yeah, her name is Megan, and uh, you know we
we are a partnership, so we try to do everything together.
But you're right, there's always a little bit of fear. Bill, Bill,
you might want to try that out.

Speaker 2 (01:27:47):
Bill, you might want to try out being a partnership.

Speaker 3 (01:27:52):
I have too much fear.

Speaker 2 (01:27:54):
At the Both of these men are terrified of their wife.

Speaker 3 (01:27:59):
I have a big blanket of fear.

Speaker 1 (01:28:01):
Here keeps you married forever?

Speaker 2 (01:28:03):
To say, that's a good tea shirt for the show.

Speaker 6 (01:28:07):
We have a partnership, like the way that like a
police officer and whoever was.

Speaker 3 (01:28:13):
In jail have a partnership, you know what I mean,
like the kind joking. I think that's awesome. Man. What
do you guys do out there?

Speaker 4 (01:28:19):
Anthony?

Speaker 1 (01:28:19):
What do you in?

Speaker 3 (01:28:19):
What do you and Meghan do?

Speaker 4 (01:28:21):
So? I'm a financial advisor and I work with people
helping them, you know, try to get to secure retirement.
And my wife actually runs a non for profit modern
dance company here in the Cleveland area.

Speaker 1 (01:28:33):
That's what's Meghan got rhythm, y'all.

Speaker 3 (01:28:38):
God, by the way, I need to know right now,
are you in Maya, Hell Antony?

Speaker 6 (01:28:44):
Did you guys have to do a first dance at
your wedding that Megan just slaid it, and that you
had to take lessons for weeks in advance just to
be passable.

Speaker 4 (01:28:52):
Luckily she did not want to be over zealous like that.
Oh good, chill, you know, everything was good that way.
But I did in college. We went to college together.
Actually took her ballet class for one of the semesters
that we were in there. Fun experience is.

Speaker 6 (01:29:07):
That I was about to say, that's very smooth if
that's how you met.

Speaker 4 (01:29:11):
No, we actually met in high school.

Speaker 1 (01:29:14):
Oh man, follow college or she followed you.

Speaker 4 (01:29:18):
Uh, it's more I probably followed her.

Speaker 1 (01:29:20):
Yeah, yeah, that we had this conversation earlier. We had
this conversation about this episode. You know, we talk about
it all the time. Guys get heavily invested. Girls are
the ones that are like, I'm going to college and
I'm going to go do my thing. Maybe I'll see
you when I get back. Yeah, you were like, oh no, no, no, no,
I can't wait till you get back. I'm going to
college with you.

Speaker 2 (01:29:42):
You're right on there, Donald, I don't even feel like
we should. I don't know if you even have a question.
I don't know. I'm tongue tied to Anthony. Do you
have a question?

Speaker 4 (01:29:53):
You're good, You're good.

Speaker 1 (01:29:54):
I did.

Speaker 4 (01:29:54):
I had a couple of them. If you guys wouldn't
mind go out.

Speaker 2 (01:29:59):
The creator of the whole dark thing here, Bill Laurence.
So go ahead.

Speaker 4 (01:30:02):
Well, the first one I think was similar to how
our experience went, where we were so thankful for the
hospital staff, and that really I think transformed how we
felt about the whole experience. Of course, we still have
a lot of feelings, and we just wondered though if
each of you maybe had any similar types of experiences

(01:30:22):
that you felt or went through and wanted to share.

Speaker 3 (01:30:28):
Uh, you guys, go go first to West you want me,
I guess the real one, you guys.

Speaker 2 (01:30:32):
Ch I'll go first. I've had a lot of death
in my life over the last couple of years. I
lost my sister and my father, and and then of
course just recently a Nick Cordero. Although because of COVID
I wasn't really allowed to be a part of the
hospital experience of losing Nick at all, and I just

(01:30:54):
I mean, I could go on for a whole podcast
about my feelings about the staff of both in both instances,
but I'll just say that I, until I had these experiences,
I didn't really realize the difference that a great doctor
and a great nurse make. And it's funny to say

(01:31:15):
that because we did a TV show about it for
nine years, But until you until you have the experience
where a nurse does a subtle thing that makes my
dad smile or or or or or puts up with
him when he's complaining and then gives me a little
bit of a sweet smile. It just makes me still

(01:31:36):
this day when I put my hands on my heart,
and I'm blessed that I didn't have that experience before Scrubs,
but it would have informed it more because I saw
firsthand the difference that that love coming from these people makes.
And like what like Bill said that this used to
be huge money making jobs, they're not anymore. People aren't
doing this for Doe anymore. They're doing it out of

(01:31:58):
service and and of the desire to help people. So yeah,
I really, I really and and and so invested. One
thing I do know about Nick's case is that Amanda
told me that when the doctor when Nick finally passed,
his doctor was crying alongside her. That's how invested he
was in in in in his well being. And uh so, yeah,

(01:32:23):
those those those in short, those are my my recent experiences.
And I'm I'm very very moved by by your story
and and I'm I'm just so happy that there are
people out there that want to that want to do
this with their lives.

Speaker 1 (01:32:38):
Yeah, you know, knowing that there are people out there,
you know, Zach's right, You know, this was a job.
Being a doctor was a job that if you stayed
the course and got into private practice, it would make
you a lot of money. And knowing that people are
still doctors and aren't making money, like when I go
to my pediatrician and take my kids to there pediatrician

(01:32:59):
and stuff like that, and knowing that he's not making
a lot of money off of us and everything like that,
but he cares for my kids so much. It really
puts me at ease, you know what I mean. The
fact that I can call him whenever I want to
and he'll pick up the phone it really puts me
at ease and to all everyone in the medical field,

(01:33:19):
that's one thing that's so important. I know that you
you know, I know that they deal with traumatic things
often and they put up a barrier and a shield
to keep them from catching feelings. But to find a
doctor like Zach was talking about, who is so invested,
it's heartwarming. It's really important. And you know, I've been

(01:33:41):
very lucky in my life to meet people who genuinely
cared about myself and my family in the medical field
and so field, and so because of that, yeah, I mean,
that's my experience.

Speaker 6 (01:33:55):
I'll go last Anthony, and I'm always tempted to have
the real JD listened to this because he was my
best buddy in college.

Speaker 3 (01:34:06):
He was a screw up.

Speaker 6 (01:34:07):
We drank beers together, and when he decided to do this.
He's a much better person than I am. And I'm
not saying I'm a bad person, but like a lot
of young men, I started pretty shallow. And it's so
important to sab someone in your life that is trying
to do more important shit. Whether it's being a doctor
or a nurse or a teacher, you know, something of
service and it meant so much to me that these

(01:34:29):
guys got to know him. And I always remember that
when we started this. You know, a guy that I
never saw as you know, having the level of depth
and integrity and the big heart that he had. He
gave us all his real stories. If you watch the
pilot of Scrubs, he hid in the closet with a
female intern because he didn't want to be the first

(01:34:51):
one into a code. He married another physician named Dolly Klock,
who you know he did his residency with.

Speaker 3 (01:35:00):
He gave it.

Speaker 6 (01:35:00):
He accidentally hit somebody with a needle that caused a
whole two big so that it kept leaking out and
squirting out, like when Donald put gum on the guy.

Speaker 3 (01:35:09):
And he did all those things, and he was always
around the set.

Speaker 6 (01:35:12):
He's now a cardiologist and a heart surgeon and he
runs a COVID command center and.

Speaker 3 (01:35:16):
Was feelis himself. He's the CEO of the hospital.

Speaker 6 (01:35:19):
And the one rule he had he said, you guys
are allowed to do any jokes that you want, but
you have to protect one thing or I'll stop working here.
It's all these young doctors and nurses want to help,
and they have to always want to help and they
have to always care about the patients otherwise it'll mess
up our friendship. And so I always it's too corny,

(01:35:41):
But I see the show as a love letter to
that dude, because we all need that person in your life.
You know that when they ask you what you're doing,
you're like, Oh, I'm doing this superficial thing. And when
you ask them what they're doing, they tell you, and
then you're immediately like, oh, I'm.

Speaker 3 (01:35:55):
A horrible person. I need to do so much more
with my life.

Speaker 4 (01:35:58):
And he is.

Speaker 3 (01:36:00):
He is that guy for me, Anthony, And uh.

Speaker 6 (01:36:02):
That's why it was so inspiring to hear you talk
about doing the same type of stuff.

Speaker 3 (01:36:06):
Man, You guys gotta have the real JD as a
guest on this sometimes.

Speaker 1 (01:36:09):
Yeah, we love that, We would love that.

Speaker 2 (01:36:12):
We should. We gotta, we gotta move him ahead of
uh of other of others except Anthony.

Speaker 1 (01:36:16):
Do you have anything else?

Speaker 2 (01:36:17):
Anything else? Anthony?

Speaker 4 (01:36:19):
I could do a slightly more uplifting.

Speaker 2 (01:36:21):
Yeah, and us and us on some on some uplifting this, Anthony.

Speaker 4 (01:36:26):
So with that, guys have talked about some great stories
of the prop sky Hiding rowdy. You know, the who
is your favorite non actor member of the team and
maybe what's a fun story about that?

Speaker 1 (01:36:44):
Oh shoot, okay, So I have a couple of them.
One uh, Bill Lawrence is the best boss that I've
ever had in my life, dude, So that he's now
I now consider him family, you know what I mean?
But catch, but he is the the the one person
in my life that I've worked for that I never

(01:37:04):
felt like, you know, and and he's had to be
hard on me sometimes, but he never made me feel like,
you know, I was an employee and he was my
boss and he was making me do my job. He's
always made me feel like an equal. So because of that,
he's one of the He's one of the most important

(01:37:27):
people in my life as as a man now. And
there's my parents And until I met Bill, I feel
like I was kind of lost. And then I met Bill,
and now I've learned so many things because of it.

Speaker 2 (01:37:41):
Your answer is Bill, that's too nice.

Speaker 3 (01:37:43):
Man, that's too I'm excited for Zaxon.

Speaker 2 (01:37:46):
It's very sweet. But how my answer? So being said,
then there's a comma coming. Okay, that being said, there's
the teams name Frank.

Speaker 1 (01:38:01):
There's one guy on the show who all of us,
Bill included and Zach included who we all have a
fondness for, and it's this dude, Patrick Bolton. Yeah, we
mentioned episode and and and we love everybody that we've
worked with, We've I love everybody that I've worked with
on Scrubs, but Patrick Bolton has a special place in
my heart. Him and Deontay Gordon actually too. Deontay has

(01:38:25):
a special place in my heart. But Patrick has a
special place in my heart because when we first started
doing the show, he I'm not gonna say he was bullied,
but he was the person that was not made fun of.
What's the word that, what's the He was the person
that was, I guess the most vulnerable to pranks.

Speaker 2 (01:38:47):
No, if you think of it like this, like like
think of it like a high school and like the
grips are like the jock tough guys, right, and like
Patrick is like the nerdy British chess player.

Speaker 1 (01:38:59):
Right, And these guys tried their hardest to break him,
and he always came out on top.

Speaker 2 (01:39:09):
Well he became our best friend.

Speaker 3 (01:39:10):
Right.

Speaker 1 (01:39:10):
Well there's that too, But I remember they they want
one time they jelloed his prop cart like in.

Speaker 2 (01:39:18):
The show The Office with the drawer, they jeloed his
whole cart, the whole thing.

Speaker 1 (01:39:23):
Impressive, but he got but he his his comeback.

Speaker 4 (01:39:28):
He ate.

Speaker 1 (01:39:29):
No, his comeback was better than all of them. He
dressed up like the dude who jeloed his ship and
clowned this guy so hard. And I think even I think,
I think even Sean was like, you know what, I
respect you dude.

Speaker 2 (01:39:44):
You are He played him all day as all day
he got in character and played that guy all day long.

Speaker 3 (01:39:52):
Yeah, that's so funny.

Speaker 1 (01:39:53):
So if you ask me, you know, we all had
great connections. Bill is very important to me. Patrick is
very important to me.

Speaker 2 (01:40:00):
Well, I'm gonna say the same thing. Uh yeah, everything
Donald said about Bill, Bill's great.

Speaker 6 (01:40:06):
But I'm just kidding, do you, guys, Zach, are you
free after after the podcast is over to tell me
your answer? Yeah, in a more foled out way about Yeah, yeah, Donald,
it's gonna be as good as Donald.

Speaker 2 (01:40:16):
I'm gonna take what Donald I wrote down. I took
some notes on what Donald said. I'm gonna say the
same thing, but just probably add a few things.

Speaker 1 (01:40:22):
Well you probably say with more big with bigger words too, Yes, Mart.

Speaker 2 (01:40:26):
I'll use I'll say Bill, you are deserving to Bill,
you are Patrick Bolton, I gotta say it's the same answer.
He was a set dresser. We mentioned this in the
last episode, but for those of you who didn't hear
or don't know, a set tresser is the one who's
the on set representative of the art department while we're filming.
So he's moving set pieces around and moving decor around

(01:40:47):
and uh, so we were. He was always there and
uh and we just got really close with him. And
he's a very sweet guy and he's very funny and
Donald and I took him to Vegas and we we've
had a lot of adventures with him.

Speaker 1 (01:40:58):
Dude. He worked on a show that I did after
and I was trying so hard to get him to
be a regular on the show. But he was doing
did he do Undateable?

Speaker 3 (01:41:07):
Uh? Yeah, he's there for a second. Yeah, he was
doing something.

Speaker 1 (01:41:11):
He was doing something with Bill that he was like, Oh,
I can't do this. I'm just day playing for a day.
But yeah, it was one of the best. Like, if
I was in a position to hire someone for just
to be around, he's one of those people, like he's
one of those people that you need, Like he could
take it. He could give it like there's just so

(01:41:32):
many ways that he was such an amazing person.

Speaker 2 (01:41:36):
Yep, I will.

Speaker 6 (01:41:37):
I'll close by going quick and saying that we are
very lucky because Rant starts with Randall, my old partner,
and you guys love him and he's my first one.
But Randall put together a crew that I was used
across so many shows, because let's face it, how many
shows have you guys worked on?

Speaker 4 (01:41:55):
That?

Speaker 3 (01:41:56):
Right now?

Speaker 6 (01:41:56):
I can go liz Inwood, Sean, the Chung Brothers, Ethan, Tanya,
you know, Carrie Bennett, Salvon, you know Richard Well, you
guys remember all these.

Speaker 3 (01:42:06):
People you know, and it just keeps going and going
and going.

Speaker 6 (01:42:12):
But for me, the most interesting one, it might surprise
you guys, was the editor of Spin City was a
very gruff guy named John Michelle, and he he taught
me on Spin City. I just remember it. Gary Goldberg,
who's my mentor, brought me into editing. He's like, John,
I'm not going to be living in New York. You
got to teach this kid to edit because I didn't

(01:42:34):
know how to edit anything. And John in front of
me said, Jesus fucking Christ, because it's like the last
thing he wanted to do.

Speaker 3 (01:42:41):
He had won to Emmy.

Speaker 6 (01:42:41):
He's for editing the original Cosby Show and all these
other things, and.

Speaker 3 (01:42:45):
He taught me to Uh. He's very kind of, you know, subdued,
quiet dude. He taught me to edit on that show,
and he became a mentor of mine.

Speaker 6 (01:42:55):
And watching you guys kind of embrace him as part
of the family meant so much. And my favorite memory, Uh,
as everybody, this happens in a weird way. Everybody calls
people by Sometimes you'll into a person that you call
him by that first and last name, and I think
I can't remember as a cast member of one of
the writers, but I always referenced to.

Speaker 3 (01:43:13):
Him because there was a John Inwood.

Speaker 6 (01:43:15):
I would always say yeah, And I was with John
Michelle and a huge group of people on that show.

Speaker 3 (01:43:21):
Thought that he must have like French origins, like his
name was, like his name was, like his name was
I thought his name was, his name.

Speaker 6 (01:43:30):
Was, like his name is Jean Michelle Jones. And watching
him finally to one of the writers, go ano.

Speaker 3 (01:43:36):
This fucking ship. My name is not Jean Michelle. My
name is John. My last name is Michelle.

Speaker 6 (01:43:40):
Maybe he's like he's like everybody around here has been
calling me Jean Michelle for two years.

Speaker 3 (01:43:46):
It may be so happy, but he's such a good dude.

Speaker 1 (01:43:49):
Zach used to call him Jean Michelle all the time.

Speaker 2 (01:43:52):
I thought he was friend. And the funny thing is
he's like this, like you you saw him. He was
in the show. He was the neighbor that gets mad
when when Donald keeps putting a rowdy in front of
his door. He's uh, he's uh. He's like this big
gruff guy and he does not look like yo.

Speaker 6 (01:44:07):
He is a blue collar dude that's an editor man,
and it's such a meat and potatoes guy.

Speaker 4 (01:44:12):
You know.

Speaker 1 (01:44:12):
Well, he directed a couple of episodes Anthony of Scrubs also,
and but when he directed, he did every like there
was like every take. There would be ten takes for
each setup, right, So you would be you would work
for because he's an editor, so he wants everything covered, right.

Speaker 6 (01:44:30):
He didn't even care what you guys were saying. He's
just like, I'm gonna need this, I'm gonna need this,
i gonna need this.

Speaker 2 (01:44:34):
Yet.

Speaker 1 (01:44:34):
Now, normally if a director comes in and says that ship,
you're like, all right, hold on now, okay, I understand
you wanna you wanna shoot the ship out of this,
but we gotta have No one would stand up to
Jean Michelle. John Michelle would be like, this is what
we're doing, and everybody would be like, OK, yeah, yeh yeah, yeah,
that's what you got a dog? Yeah? No, absolutely absolutely.

Speaker 3 (01:44:59):
He by the way, he he never had a centement.

Speaker 6 (01:45:00):
I'll tell you the last thing. And it's way too
many stories. He didn't have a sentimental bone in his body.
It seemed he's very gruff and not a sweet guy.
And I was married very young, in a marriage that
didn't work out as opposed to the one anthemy, you know,
and I've been married for twenty years. I got three kids,
and on Spin City, I was working there all the time.
And I didn't even live in the same state as
my wife when you know, we were married when I

(01:45:21):
was like twenty three and she's twenty one. And we
split up and I was in a bad place, and
I went home to my little studio apartment in New
York and there was a knock at the doorbell, and
much like it would happen in high school, John Michelle,
there was the six pack of beer and He's like yeah,
you and I are going to go walk somewhere and drink.

Speaker 3 (01:45:40):
Beer, which is his way to say like, are you okay?

Speaker 1 (01:45:44):
Do you know what I mean?

Speaker 3 (01:45:45):
And he didn't really ask me if I He didn't
ask me if I was okay.

Speaker 6 (01:45:48):
We literally went out and drank six beers, three each,
and he talked about sports, and then at the end
he was like, you good, I'm gonna see it work tomorrow.

Speaker 3 (01:45:56):
I'm like, yeah, I'm all right. He's like, all right,
good night man. And it was so that's why I
mentioned his name, so touching and I hope he hears this.

Speaker 4 (01:46:02):
I'm forever grateful, very sweet.

Speaker 2 (01:46:04):
All Right, we gotta go, Anthony, because we've gone longer
than we've ever gone. But what a show. Somebody just
went like this, why is that one of the Bengo
card things?

Speaker 1 (01:46:17):
Yeah, absolutely, we've gone long.

Speaker 4 (01:46:21):
Such an honor to meet you all. And if you're
doing your European tour sometime in the twenty twenty eight
time frame, when COVID's gone and you stop in Cleveland,
feel free. You were happy to have you.

Speaker 2 (01:46:32):
Guys are going to come to you in Cleveland. Are
you in Cleveland? He said, He's in Cleveland.

Speaker 1 (01:46:37):
I thought he said it's a Nati. Dude. Have you
eaten Marabell's No? Sorry, no, Mabels, Yes, delicious, the best
good barbecue, the best barbecue I've ever had in my life. Maybe. Wow,
have you ever eaten Slimers? Yeah, I'm is that Limond's
Sliman's such. That's the biggest sandwich I've ever eaten in

(01:46:57):
my life. Dude, have you guys ever eaten there?

Speaker 2 (01:47:00):
Nope, this show is running long and probably cut what
Donald likes to eat in Cincinnati out.

Speaker 1 (01:47:06):
Of the show. No, no, no, Cleveland if you're in Cleveland.
If you're in Cleveland, Mabels and Sliman's. I promise you
you won't go wrong, especially if you like red meat.

Speaker 4 (01:47:18):
Okay, thank you guys so much.

Speaker 2 (01:47:19):
Any thank you, and we'll put the link to the
website on our page, so anyone who wants to contribute canon,
thank you so much. And we're all very excited for
you and your coming baby.

Speaker 1 (01:47:30):
Ladies and gentlemen, give it up for Anthony.

Speaker 3 (01:47:38):
Zach. We've been going so he is. What an inspiring guy.
We're going so long?

Speaker 6 (01:47:41):
Do you want do you want to rattle off a
bunch of times a bunch of remaining times of stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:47:46):
But I just want to say, you can't not talk
about doctor Yanni Tour. It's some people's favorite thing ever.

Speaker 6 (01:47:51):
You have to dude eighteen forty five doctor yan etur
yan Etour.

Speaker 3 (01:47:55):
That's huge, Jehan.

Speaker 2 (01:47:57):
And what about he goes, what about how Neil goes, Uh, Look,
I borrowed some stuff from your locker, our locker.

Speaker 6 (01:48:03):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (01:48:04):
That was not script that was not scr scripted.

Speaker 6 (01:48:06):
By the way, that's just a classic Neil fan like
when Donald says watching other actors, I know that that
stuff was just I borrowed some stuff from your locker,
which is supposed to be funny because he can get
into your locker.

Speaker 3 (01:48:17):
That he changed it midline to our locker. It kills me.

Speaker 2 (01:48:20):
Yeah. What about when I go when I go, uh,
Sarah's is something like, oh, it's it's going great, right,
And I go yeah, And then the voiceover goes throw
her down on the gurney and mount her like a lion.

Speaker 3 (01:48:31):
Like that was a very woody Allen reading. Donald usually
points those out, like a lion.

Speaker 1 (01:48:36):
Mount like a lion. I I I loved, I loved
first time we hear it, chocolate Bear, Why so sad
chocolate Bear.

Speaker 2 (01:48:44):
Sad chocolate Bear.

Speaker 6 (01:48:45):
Uh.

Speaker 7 (01:48:46):
And then.

Speaker 2 (01:48:48):
Did you consult?

Speaker 1 (01:48:50):
I would never consult, Trevor Wiki.

Speaker 3 (01:48:53):
I dare Zach, I wouldn't dare.

Speaker 2 (01:48:55):
I got that first first time chocolate bear has ever
said from from Scrubs Wiki. Yeah, what else you got? Bill?

Speaker 6 (01:49:03):
I will tell you that I decided that I was
going to work with Bob Clindennon again, and you know,
ended up being a regular on Cougartown. When at twelve thirty,
when when he's walking out of there with Carla after
he you know, after he talked to Richard Kine's character,
he says, you know, he's talking about the other cancer

(01:49:25):
doctor and he's like, that guy's a better sense of humor.

Speaker 3 (01:49:27):
Everybody likes him more.

Speaker 6 (01:49:29):
And then he says, of course he wouldn't be laughing
so much if he knew I was sleeping with his wife,
you know, And it is the best part. And then
in the script he was just supposed to walk away
confidently whistling, and then Bob Quinndennon said, I think it
would be funnier if.

Speaker 3 (01:49:43):
My guy can't whistle. And if you watch, he walks
away going barely blowing Aaron whistling.

Speaker 6 (01:49:53):
I thought it was the funniest thing I ever seen. Man,
that guy is so good as a character actor.

Speaker 2 (01:49:56):
I love that guy. I tried everything I do too.

Speaker 1 (01:50:00):
I did, I did, I did a I did a
sitcom called The Exes, and he came on as a
guest star one day. And uh, when I say, from
table read toheard every time, every time, I'm surprised they
didn't bring him back on that show as well. Man,
Like he just always always on fire. When he walked in,

(01:50:23):
I was like, Yo, this dude's gonna be great. Watch well.

Speaker 2 (01:50:28):
Thank you, William van Dozer, Lawrence the fourth yep.

Speaker 1 (01:50:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (01:50:32):
By the way, you know what the most fun about
this I.

Speaker 2 (01:50:34):
Said, I said that you were the third, and people said, uh, no.

Speaker 3 (01:50:37):
The fourth.

Speaker 2 (01:50:38):
He's the fourth.

Speaker 3 (01:50:39):
Yeah, there's four of them.

Speaker 6 (01:50:40):
I gotta say, Man, the coolest thing talking to you
guys about this stuff is I never know which way
it's gonna go, And often, you know, you come into
these things kind of just searching for something, and what
you end up doing is discovering things.

Speaker 1 (01:50:58):
It was alright, it was alright, bro. I saw it coming.

Speaker 3 (01:51:02):
Yeah, I saw it coming.

Speaker 1 (01:51:03):
You waited the whole episode.

Speaker 2 (01:51:05):
Ladies, and gentlemen, no one does a callback joke better
than Bill fucking Lawrence. Come on, come on, it's incredible.

Speaker 3 (01:51:12):
It's in there.

Speaker 1 (01:51:13):
It was good, but you waited the whole episode to
get it there.

Speaker 2 (01:51:17):
But that's why he gets paid the big bucks.

Speaker 1 (01:51:22):
We're gonna I'm glad you like the recap. I'm glad
you like that one was good, dude.

Speaker 3 (01:51:27):
That was good.

Speaker 4 (01:51:29):
Listen.

Speaker 2 (01:51:29):
We're gonna end the show with another song that I
found by the Shins. And why are we allowed to
use it, you say, Zach, Well, I'll tell you why
because it was written for the film Wish I was Here,
starring Donald Faison as an Astid Martin dealer.

Speaker 1 (01:51:44):
I've been in so many movies.

Speaker 2 (01:51:45):
Yeah I was in that one. Yeah you were in
that one.

Speaker 3 (01:51:48):
Were you in Garden State? Were in Garden State?
