I was like, all right, let's roll. Yeah, this is
what I came here to do.

My I mean, school was terrible. I went to college
to play football and so like, hey, they're going You're
gonna be the guy for the next four years.

And I was like, all right.

So we started practicing and you know, everything was going great,
and uh, you know, then I started getting this feeling
that it wasn't.

So I'm just off, you know, within me and.

First year, second year, it was the.

First This is all during the first year, like towards
the end, so spring ball was coming up or we're
in Spring Bowl, and I just didn't feel right and
I didn't feel like I was on like the right path.
And you know I was. I was feeling very you know,
I was partying a lot, and you know it was
just party football. I hang out with my friends. Yeah,
you know, I grew up very religious. My grandpa was
a past year. But I felt like super convicted, little unfulfilled, unfulfilled,

you know, and uh, I meant for something like I
wasn't doing the right thing even though everything.

Speaker 2 (49:30):
That I wanted was going correctly. And what a weird
feeling too, by the way. Weird, like when everything is
going right and you still feel like you're not where
you're supposed to be.

Yeah, but you can't be I mean like you gotta
you got to be in tune with yourself to even
you know, like you got to be in focus enough
and dialed enough to even realize that that's going on.

Speaker 4 (49:49):
Yeah, for a while there, I wasn't and I was
totally you know, and I honestly I.

Hadn't easy to do right.

Speaker 4 (49:54):
I hadn't prayed for a long time.

I was just I was kind of just doing your
own thing. Yeah, not not the correct way. And I
remember I sat. I come home from practice one day
because the feeling was just too much. And I come
home from practice. I immediately put my stuff down in
the living room, I walk into my the I walk
into the bathroom, I closed the door.

I sit down, and I.

Speaker 3 (50:18):
Just start bawling. I just start weeping, and and I go, hey, man,
I know it's been a while, but I need I
need help. I need a sign or something. I don't,
you know, everything's going correctly, it just doesn't feel right
and I need to talk to you, and I need
a sign from you, and I remember drawing myself up

(50:40):
after like five ten minutes of just sitting there bawling. Dude,
draw myself up, walk out, go to bed, wake up.
Went to class the next day, which I didn't do.

Often, like hey, you're kicked out of school.

Speaker 3 (50:58):
I went to class the next day, normal day, walked
in the locker room, through my paths, walked out to
the the field, warmed up. Everything was going like it
usually does. Very first play. I run a post over
the middle, break my leg in three places. Geez, very
first play. My first thought was this really hurts a lot.

And my second thought was that's my sign right there.

Speaker 1 (51:25):
Wow, I quit on the forty was your third thought, like, dang,
bro it could have been like you could have sprayed
my ankles, wouldn't listen, that's right, broke in one place,
wouldn't have listened, probably wouldn't wouldn't have listened. As a
good I mean, that's a that's a good way to wait,
to say that got your attention enough to go okay, man,

I've just asked for.

Okay, three places, I get it. I'm out. Yeah, yeah,
for sure. That's so. Sometimes it takes that though. Sometimes
it takes more than just a sprainer, you know, to
change the old.

Yeah, within twelve hours, I ask God for a sign.

He gave you, and he gave me one, gave you
three of them, actually three of them in places reminded
had never ask.

He knows. I'm sarcastic, no doubt.

So had it been on your mind, like, did you
feel like at that moment, like do you feel like
God was pointing you to Nashville?

Or did that come later?

No? I mean, and really, leaving college and leaving football
wasn't really on my mind either. I just needed a
sign of what to do. And as soon as that happened, like, yes,
this hurt a lot, but like this overwhelming feeling of
I I don't clicked, I know what I need to
do now, and I pretty much quit right there on

the forty six forty seven yard line.

Wow.

And you know I didn't tell anybody, but yeah, went home,
got surgery, came back packed all my stuff. Talked to
my coach. His name was Chuck Mrrell. At the time,
I said, Hey, I can't do this no more. He goes,
you got a plan, I said, nope, probably just get
a job somewhere, work at the mill, back at home. Yeah,
and he goes, make sure, make sure you got a

plan before you want you make sure you want to
do this, and uh I go, I don't really have one,
but I know I can't be here, and he goes,
I respect that.

Speaker 2 (53:19):
Then I walked out, shook his hand. He goes, good
luck to you, and I walked out. Wow, So then
how'd you get here? Uh?

Speaker 4 (53:28):
So I moved back home.

Speaker 3 (53:31):
And I was still super lost, and I ended up
getting surgery and I was I waited a couple of
weeks to heugh, and then I got a job and
then I was working for a little bit, and I
still didn't feel right. You know, I felt better, and
I knew that I made the right decision, but it's
something in me. And I remember sitting my mom down

(53:52):
and uh I was like, hey, because me and my
mom are tied, we're super cool. And uh I talked
to her pretty us about everything, and I sit her down.

Speaker 4 (54:03):
I go, mom, I'm not doing good. She goes, I know.

Speaker 2 (54:07):
I go, I don't.

Speaker 3 (54:08):
I don't know what I'm doing with my life. She goes, well,
have you tried praying about it? I said, every day,
you know, I still just don't feel right, and she goes, well,
when's the last time you picked up your guitar or
sitting from the piano. She was like, that was your
therapy years ago. Come on, mom, Yeah, I'm not kidding
about I'm not kidding about any of this. And so

(54:32):
I was like, you know, you're probably right, And then
we talked for a little bit, and then she was
working graveyard at the mill, so she had to go
to work, so it was just me in the house
that night, and I remember sitting down, your mom sounds awesome,
she's the ship, She's awesome. But I remember sitting down.
I wrote my first song that night. Didn't know what
I was doing. It was a terrible song, but I

was hooked, and I just started writing a bunch, kind
of getting back into music and perfecting my craft again.
And and then I remember sitting her down, probably like
seven months later, eight months later, I was like, I
want to do this, and she goes, go do it.

Wow, what cool?

Mom?

Speaker 2 (55:10):
You moved to Nashville. Did you start doing arounds or
how did you how'd you get out? How'd you meet people?

Speaker 3 (55:15):
Drinking at the bars? Really? Yeah, like I would so
I didn't know anybody, and I would go to the bars.

Speaker 2 (55:21):
But you just knew Nashville is where you had to be.

Speaker 4 (55:24):
Yeah, I didn't know.

Speaker 3 (55:25):
I had a feeling, you know, and I knew that
music was here, and I knew I had this dream
of you know, yeah doing it, doing it, and I
knew this was like my best shot where people are
doing it, where people are doing it, and you know,
I would. I would go to the bars by myself,
sit there, order a shot a fireball and a bush

light or whatever, and sit there and hang out and say, hey,
I'm talking where you're from. You know.

Luckily, I was very blessed to meet the people that
I did.

Speaker 3 (55:57):
When when I did, like super early on, like my
best friend someone on my roommates, my neighbors right now
and we're all super tight, cool, we'll be forever best friends. Yeah,
you know, I met them probably like a month or two,
in which I'm super blessed.

Do you feel like, uh, right now in your career
do you feel that feeling that you didn't feel on
the football field. Do you feel that now? Like do
you do you feel fulfilled?

Do you feel like you're exactly where you need to
be every day really every day and wild man, you.

Won't feel like that twenty four to seven.

Sure with anything, you know, but even if I'm you know,

I'm tired, or you know, some things aren't going right up,
I get up on stage and I'm like, is it.
This is what I want to do for the rest
of my life, even if I'm broke doing it, I'm
gonna do it.

a great story and prophising, right, you know, like supportive

my life. But to have somebody that supportive, like, it's

it's you have to have somebody that champions you know you,
not even just your songs, but more like just champions
you because dude, I mean I think about it all
the time with my kids, Like I'm sitting there, you know,
like this last week I was, I was in a
beach chair rocking my son to sleep at the beach

and I'm like, man, I wonder if he'll remember this.
You know what I mean. But like, even if he
doesn't remember it, it's he he will know that I
support him just by doing that over and over and
over and over. It's just like you do with your mom.
You know, she probably has supported you since you were born.

where she was like, maybe you should just stay home.

She's always like, go chase me. And my mom's.

Growing up, she worked three jobs at a time. She
was a corrections officer, bounty hunter. She's bad.

I think she did give me a story, a story
bounty hunter story from your mom.

She tells us one all the time.

Yes, so when she was your mom is so cool.
So she tells me the story and she got that
dog in her it sounds I mean now she's she's
getting older and she's in her u uh, probably still
in there though.

Yeah, I wouldn't piss her off. So she was pregnant
with me.

Speaker 3 (58:59):
And she he had I'm not going to drop names,
but she had this guy in in custody, and uh,
they're going to they're going to the precinct to you know,
book him and stuff like that. And he started complaining
about chest pains. And I'm probably watching this story, but
I'm gonna try to tell her the best I can.

(59:19):
He started complaining about chess chest pains in the back
of the squad car, and she was like, well, all right,
so she radio it in chest pains, I I legally
have to take him to the hospital even if he's lying.

So that's like a scape that is that a long
a hack? Is that like a cop hack? Like you
just go, oh, I got chest pains. That way they
have to they have to, yeah wow, because I mean
they don't want you to die on.

Speaker 3 (59:48):
Whatever. But uh so they they go to the hospital.
They're in there and they're like, hey, he's having chest pains,
YadA YadA. In the hospital now knows what's going on,
trying to just stall or whatever. And so they do
their thing in there.

They start walking out and he starts like, you.

Speaker 3 (01:00:07):
Know, being a little sketchy. Yeah yeah, yeah, and uh
she goes so in the old squad cars, you have
to reach around and unlock from the inside.

Over the front door. Reach around, Yeah, open.

The front door to unlock the back. And so she
was doing that while he's in you know, cuffs. I'm
pretty sure he had the chain cuffs on too. She
was doing that kind of keeping an eye. And as
soon as she went like this, starts taking off running
and she's probably six months pregnant with me at this whole. Yeah,
and so she immediately goes, we gotta run her whatever

that code is, starts chasing after him, meets up with
him at six months pregnant.

Down to the ground. Yeah.

Dude, takes him out, ends up getting help, and then
takes him back to the thing. But the funniest part
about this, so there was one of my my mom
and dad were together and they were both correction officers,
and they get to the jail and my dad walks in,
walks past the cell. Apparently he got a beat and
put on him because he gave my mom a hard time.

She was very respected within you know the jail. Te Yeah,
they didn't mess around. Wow, they gave her a hard time,
knowing that she was pregnant. Put the boats to him. Dang,
My dad walks up to the cell and you know,

You're like, dude, we made it, you know, like they're
gonna send it. We're gonna send a film crew down here.
We're gonna turkey hunt. We're gonna bust turkeys in the face.

send a guy down. He's funny that we cared about that.

At the time much we cared about He sent a
guy down and spent like two or three days with
us and and trying to trying to get on turkeys
and have some great hunts.

It was also the worst weather of all time. Yeah, bad,
like rainy weather.

Super He had like one day left and we did
we'd already done all the interviews, and we just did
not think it was gonna happen, like killing turkey was

you know what, man, like, it's okay. It's it's part
of turkey hunting. It's it's kind of what happens is
you don't you don't get them in twenty yards, like
every time you hunt. So last day he's like, boys,
I got tomorrow. Then I got a bounce smart afternoon.

Last day, we go to a new spot. Our buddies like, man,
this bird's fired up. Come on, let's get on him.

Camera guy goes with us. We see we driving around,
See the turkey in the field. We parked the truck,
get in this like go behind behind this turkey, like
south of this turrack, get on this two track up
to this power line and get in the woods.

And we're like, man, he wants to be here. I
know he wants to be here. He's alone.

We start just yeah, being being quiet, being soft, being
being sneaky about it, and uh, bird starts goblin. He
starts working through this timber. Perfect. They're like, read, sit
up right here, cameraman's right here. He's gonna walk down
this two track busting when he turns in this thing
right to it. So I was like, perfect, I just
put a red dot on my gun and I shot
it a couple of times, and because I had been
missing turkeys, like.

Yeah, yeah, and uh and so this this bird sure
enough comes into this this two track just and when
they gobble, like when they gobble away from you, it's awesome,

and they're gobbling at you, bro, it's a different feeling.
So with the pro camera, this turkey's looking This turkey's
looking at us, gobbling at us.

But then I started thinking about it, started thinking about
the album as a whole, and it just made the
most sense. You know, the whole album is just about
and learning and you know, who I am as a person,

feel like everything happened so fast last year that nobody
really got to know me for sure, and you know,

this is my chance to, uh, you know, kind of
let people in on who I am and why I
am the way I am, and where I come from
and in my roots and my upbringing and all that stuff.
And the song really, you know, kind of put it
as a whole, and it made the most sense, you know,

like living and learning, like learning what not to do
by watching you know, others do wrong things or yourself
or whatever it is. And it just made the most
instant name it what Not To And I'm happy that
I did. But at first I was hesitant because I
didn't want to make it seem like a focus of
everything because there's so many great tracks.

an idea comes up where it feels kind of special
and bigger than bigger than just songs, yeah, just a radio.
It feels bigger than an opportunity to say something that

makes somebody's gonna feel something or help somebody or you know,
let somebody feel a little bit better.

Part of the reason we all, I think, moved to.

Town is to write songs like that and create projects
like that, Like did do you feel Are you excited
about the opportunity to put something out it's going to
do that for somebody.

Speaker 3 (01:13:13):
Yeah, dude, I mean that's my That's been my whole goal.
And I've been looking forward to creating an album for
as long as I can remember. You know, I grew
up a very album based listener, and I love you know.
The way I kind of explained is like a songwriting
within songwriting, you know, you know, all the way down
to the track listing and being intentional with like this
song goes here, this was hearing that.

The way I kind of explain it is like I feel.

Speaker 3 (01:13:37):
Like I created a puzzle and I cut out all
the pieces and I threw it all in a box
and I shook it up and I said, here you go,
you know, and like everything, everything goes together, and it's
it's the coolest thing.

Man, that's cool, you know.

Speaker 4 (01:13:51):
And like music is.

Speaker 3 (01:13:56):
Subjective, but at the same time, if it makes somebody
feel something, it's probably making another person feel the same. Sure,
And that's what music is about. And that's what I
want to create, is stuff that makes you feel something.
Because you think about like the beginning of time of music,
it was all just feeling. Yeah, you know, there wasn't
no streaming, there wasn't no nothing. They did it because

they love to do it, and it made it kind
of what we're talking about. No rules, there's no rules.
They're just doing what it feels good, an escape for
whatever you're using it for. And uh, you know, I
think there's beauty in that. And you know, obviously you're
gonna need like the heavy hitters and you know if
you want, you know, a long lasting career.

But I think.

The the people that really love music and like the
true fans of what you're doing, they're going to relate
more to the what not to the body of work,
Whiskey Whiskey agains all these other songs on the on
the record, But I'm proud of it, man, and dude,
this is one of those This is one of those
things that I've done in my career that I'm going

to look back ten years from now and I'm gonna
be like, yeah, you were super green and you were
super new, but I'm still.

Sure, absolutely, And I think I think that says something.

It definitely does. I mean a body of work to
me is it's more important, uh, to a career than
a hit. I agree, you know, And if you're able
to do that in your in your record, I think
people will appreciate that and it'll go a long way,
I hope so well.

I think you absolutely did it, and I think your
fans are are They're gonna love it, and I think
people who aren't your fans are gonna love it and
you're gonna gain more and uh, it does feel like
a rocket ship.
