Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to Good Game with Sarah Spain, where we'll be
watching tonight's WNBA games, hoping that we see the girl
and the no One watches men's sports shirt again. On
today's show, a very special group chat that's also a
power couple with broadcasters and analysts Lisa Byington and Shimmy Miller.
Plus we'll hear what you slices had to say about
the interview with Christine Brennan. It's all coming up right
(00:22):
after this Welcome back, Happy Friday. Here's what you need
to know today in the WNBA, who's up for a
pair of game threes? We are? The Minnesota Links and
(00:45):
the Connecticut Sun are tied one one as the semi
final series shifts from Minnesota to Uncasville tonight. Who will
help carry the load from Minnesota on offense? If Navisa
call your struggles again, will do Wanna Bonner pass Candice
Parker for second place on the all time Playoffs points list?
She needs just seven points to do it. That one
tips off at seven thirty Eastern. Then the New York
(01:05):
Liberty has a two zero series lead and they'll had
to Vegas for the first game on the Aces home court.
Will Sabrina and Escu lighted up again, can Vegas rise
to coach Becky Hammond's defensive standard? And will we see
a historic scoring performance from Asia Wilson. Tap in at
nine thirty eastern to see for yourself. Oh and if
you want to hear more about the x's and o's
of all of it, make sure you tune into WNBA
(01:26):
Countdown at seven eastern on ESPN two. Some breaking WNBA
news today, Okay, not really, we all definitely knew this
was coming. The WNBA announced on Thursday that Caitlin Clark
is the twenty twenty four Rookie of the Year. It's
not a surprise, especially after last week's WNBPA statement mentioned
the Fever star as if she was a season ending
(01:46):
award winner. Clark received sixty six of sixty seven votes,
with Angel Reese collecting one. Now, this episode would be
even longer than yesterday's if we listed all of Clark's
accomplishments this season, so we'll link to a list in
the show notes. More WNBA news. The Atlanta Dream fired
third year head coach Tanisha Right on Wednesday. Wright, who
had a fourteen year w career as a player with
(02:07):
the championship to Boot led Atlanta to a fifteen to
twenty five record as head coach this season, and she
also led them through a thrilling fight for the last
seed in the postseason, but the team was swept in
the first round. For the second straight year. The Dream
haven't had a winning record since the twenty eighteen season.
Wright squad did have some notable injuries to key pieces
this season, including to leading scorer Ryan Howard, two way
(02:29):
threat aerial Powers starting point guard Jordan Canada, and veteran
forward Schian Parker Tias. That's always tough to deal with,
but right is out and her firing means there are
now four head coach positions opened in the w Atlanta, Chicago,
Los Angeles, and Golden State. To Soccer, we're closing in
on the final month of the NWSL regular season and
there are lots of playoff implications heading into Week twenty two.
(02:50):
Shout out to chart queen and data viz whiz Alison Gaale,
who compiled the list of a bunch of those scenarios.
We'll link to her list in the show notes. A
few teams can clinch playoff births and home games this
weekend Washington, Gotham, and Kansas City could all clinch quarterfinal
hosting privileges. North Carolina look into secure a playoff spot,
while Utah, Houston, and Seattle are all on the brink
(03:11):
of elimination depending on how the results fall. Plus the
Orlando Pride will clinch the Shield with a win. In
previous seasons, the NWSL Shield winner essentially got an engraved
pie plate for posting the league best record, but the
trophy got a major makeover thanks to Tiffany and Company.
Also tiny tidbit that gave us a giggle. So the
nwsl'sccount tweeted a video of the new Shield trophy and
(03:32):
Seattle Rain head coach Laura Harvey quoted it with the
caption quote, excited to see what the upgrade is for
Coach of the Year. I'm hoping Seb gets more than
the tweet end quote. She's referring to Orlando Pride head
coach Seb Hines, who's likely to win Coach of the
Year this year. And given that Harvey has won the
award three times herself. Guess and she's talking from experience
here when she says, hope you get more than a tweet.
(03:53):
Some more NWSL news and this is honestly infuriating. The
Safe Sport investigation into formership Jago Redstars coach Rory Dames
has been closed for now. Dames was mentioned nearly four
hundred times in former Acting Attorney General Sallyate's thorough twenty
twenty two report on abuse in women soccer. He's no
longer listed on the Safe Sport Disciplinary database, which is
(04:14):
a hub for info on the restrictions placed on coaches
and others. Dames has repeatedly denied allegations of verbal and
emotional abuse, sexual misconduct, and grooming made against him by
former players at the youth and professional levels. Per the
Washington Post, Safe Sport has said it won't comment on
case outcomes, but that dames removal from their database and
the temporary closing of his case is due to quote
(04:36):
an administrative hold and that there's quote insufficient information to
sustain the matter for now. More from the Post. Out
of six of Dames named accusers for say they were
never contacted by Safe Sport, One said the last time
they were contacted was three years ago, and another decided
not to respond after she was contacted by an investigator
(04:57):
about the wrong coach so frustrating. Elsewhere in soccer news,
Netflix has announced a new documentary called It's All Over
The Kiss That Changed Spanish Football that focuses on Spain's
twenty twenty three World Cup win. Many of the team
stars appear in the Dock, which revisits the controversy filled
years leading up to the World Cup, their remarkable success,
and the aftermath of the abhorrent actions of the former
(05:20):
president of the Royal Spanish Football Association, Luis Rubialis. During
the World Cup podium ceremony, which should have been a
momentous occasion for the players, Rubilis grabbed forward Jenny Hermoso
and kissed her on the mouth. Rubialis is set to
stand trial on February third, twenty twenty five, facing charges
of sexual assault and coercion. Prosecutors are seeking a prison
term of two years and six months. The documentary is
(05:43):
set to premiere worldwide November first. Finally, in college basketball news,
the twenty twenty four NCAA champion South Carolina game Cocks
announced they've sold out season tickets for the first time
in program history. Season tickets account for thirteen thousan forty
six seats per game. Colonial Life Arena has a capacity
of eighteen ten thousand, and the program said the rest
of the seats will be sold on a single game basis.
(06:03):
The Game Cocks have led the nation in average attendance
for the last ten seasons. We got to take a
quick break. When we come back, the Sky's the limit
with Power Couple Lisa Byington and Jimmy Miller. It's time
for another group chat where we take the t from
the texts and bring it to the airwaves. And this
(06:26):
is an extra special group chat because it's our first
ever Power Couple.
Speaker 2 (06:33):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
She's a play by play announcer, studio host, and feature
producer reporter, including acting as the play by play announcer
for the Chicago Sky. She's broadcast games all over the
place Fox Sports, FS one, Big Ten Network, CBS, Turner Sports,
PAC twelve, ESPN, SEC Network. In twenty seventeen, she became
the first woman to call play by play for a
college football game for the Big Ten Network, and in
twenty twenty one, she became the first female full time
(06:55):
play by play voice for a major men's professional sports
team as the play by play voice of the Milwaukee Bucks.
Who Are My NBA side piece. She's a baller herself,
having played four years of hoops and two years of
soccer at Northwestern University, and both teams made the NCAA tournament.
We once went beyond Thunderdome together. That's a story for
another time. It's Lisa Byington. What's up, Lisa? What's up? Sarah?
Speaker 3 (07:17):
Love your podcast, Love you, thanks for the invite joining her.
Speaker 1 (07:21):
She's a broadcast in studio analyst, including sitting alongside Lisa
for the Chicago Sky and for the Big Time Network.
She's a twenty four year college coaching vet, including assistant
coach stops at Minnesota, Clemson, Florida, Arizona, Washington, Nebraska, and
head coaching stops at Saint Louis U and Texas Tech.
She's a proud Flint, Michigan native. She's got a master's
degree in athletic leadership and a bachelor's degree in sociology
and law. Helping your Champion Mental and physical Health, Justice
(07:43):
and equity, Dog Lover La La Plouza, goer, and look
out Lard Hamilton. She's on a surfboard too. It's Shimmy Miller.
What's up, Shimmy, what's up?
Speaker 3 (07:53):
Sarah, I was the surf Wait a second, why didn't
I not get dog lover in my bio too?
Speaker 1 (07:58):
Since we own the same dog. You got Thunderdome and
Shimmy was also at thunder We were all at the
Thunderdome together.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
As if your bio wasn't long enough.
Speaker 1 (08:09):
I know, right, I did.
Speaker 2 (08:10):
I did.
Speaker 1 (08:11):
I forget some college reporting. You did it.
Speaker 3 (08:13):
We got to work on the side piece though, make
that into the I mean, honestly, the bulls are gonna
be so trash they might just get dumped and the
bucks might become the main thing.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
But okay, fun fact, y'all are married, hence the power
couple part. So let's start with the schmoopy stuff. Lisa,
how did you two meet? Uh? Basketball world?
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Shimmy was at Nebraska at the time I was at
Big ten Network. We became acquaintances, first friends. Second, there
was a period of time where we just didn't even talk.
And and then you know, Shimmy has worked in every
single Power five conference, which is now the Power four,
but at the time every Power five conference.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
So she started moving around.
Speaker 3 (08:57):
But with every I think we both realized, like with
every major thing that we went through, we always wanted
to connect with certain people and each other ended up
being right like who who we wanted to connect with?
Speaker 1 (09:09):
And so we eventually figured it.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
Out, and so we went acquaintance's friends, didn't talk for
a while, you know, reconnected, and now we're married.
Speaker 1 (09:17):
Isn't that the path that everybody takes?
Speaker 2 (09:18):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (09:18):
Yeah, totally of course. Uh show me one proposal, two proposals?
How did that go?
Speaker 4 (09:25):
I was just one Lisa proposed to me.
Speaker 2 (09:27):
It was supposed to be my graduation, like I was
graduating with you know, with my masters, and so I
wanted to do just like a fun party. So we
rented at Airbnb in South Carolina in the lake. We
invited about fifteen of our friends, and I thought we
were just, you know, gonna hike and celebrate Shimmy's you know, old.
Speaker 4 (09:45):
Ass finally going back and getting your master's degree.
Speaker 2 (09:48):
And at the end of the hike, we get down
and it was this beautiful, elaborately planned proposal.
Speaker 4 (09:55):
It was all Lisa. It was amazing, she says.
Speaker 1 (09:58):
Elaborately planned. But she literally asked me, are you proposing
to me? So I guess I didn't do the obvious thing.
Speaker 3 (10:04):
I said, I'm trying so Oh my god, so roll
with it a little bit.
Speaker 1 (10:09):
That's one of those hikes where the whole time you're like,
don't sprain an ankle, don't complain about how bored you are,
don't decide to turn back early, Like, let's just make
it to this destination. That's so cute. Okay, I want
to do a little Roses and Thorns. So the roses
the highlight. The thorn is the struggle. So shimmy roses
and thorns of calling a game alongside your wife.
Speaker 2 (10:33):
The roses I get to work with, you know, in
my opinion, the best play by play in the world.
Speaker 4 (10:39):
So you know, she elevates me, she makes me better.
So that's the rose. The thorn. She's hard on me, like,
she's so hard on me. She's made me cry, like twice, she's.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
So at work on me.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
Or after yeah, no, the first time, like my first
game calling a sky I literally had tears in my
eyes at halftime.
Speaker 1 (11:01):
Don't let that cute.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Little blonde, you know blue lies.
Speaker 1 (11:05):
What did she say? Oh you did you mess something up?
Speaker 2 (11:08):
Or multiple things, Sarah, multiple things she took, but she
at halftimes she took her headset off and like leaned
into me and I went, oh God, and she like
leaned in and she said, you are being paid to
do a job, so do your job.
Speaker 4 (11:25):
And I had tears. I was like, okay, I I felt.
Speaker 2 (11:30):
Like I was like eight year old Shimmy who just
picked something up from the grocery store and fled and
you know, Mama Miller was about to get in that butt.
Speaker 4 (11:39):
Like That's what I felt like. So, roses and thorns,
But it's all good now, I am. I am better
because of moments like that.
Speaker 1 (11:47):
Okay, Lisa, roses and thorns of working with Shimmy.
Speaker 3 (11:52):
Yeah, well the roses is I love seeing her. You know,
she's she's fifty one years old, and she professions. You know,
you introduced her as a coach who's been doing it
for twenty four years, So who does that?
Speaker 1 (12:06):
You know?
Speaker 3 (12:06):
And not only do you change professions, but it's not
like she's sitting in a cubicle as an accountant where
no one's watching, right, Like, everyone is watching her on
TV and studio doing games, whatever she's going to do,
and they're critiquing her and they're they're nitpicking every mistake.
And so that to me is gratifying to see her
make that jump and make that change, and take that
(12:28):
risk and stretch herself as a fifty.
Speaker 1 (12:29):
One year old woman to do that. I think it's awesome.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
The thorns are she's smarter than me, and I don't
like to sit next to people who are smarter than me.
Speaker 1 (12:40):
So I love it. I love it so lots of
time watching the Sky talking about the Sky show me.
A lot of people were shocked to see Teresa Weather
it's been let go by the team after just one season.
What are you hearing about the impetus for that decision?
Speaker 4 (12:55):
Not much, I mean not much at all.
Speaker 2 (12:57):
Were it was interesting, Sarah because we were actually all together,
Lisa Jason Ross Junior, who's another play by play, with
this guy, Carly Bell who works for Marque Sports with
this guy, and Derek Jensen, who's our producer for our
studio show that we do with the Sky. We were
actually having like the end of season dinner celebration dinner
together and we all got the news at the same time.
(13:18):
But this is what I'll say is that coaching is
a transient profession. Look, I've been fired four times as
a coach, and only once that I think I really
deserve it. The other three times I was like, what
the hell you know? It just it's they don't have
to have a good reason. They don't even have to
have a reason. If they want to make a change,
they make a change, and it is what it is.
(13:40):
And you know, we might find out why later down
the road, or you might not ever find out.
Speaker 4 (13:45):
It's the profession.
Speaker 1 (13:46):
Yeah, I think it's hard to know the situation she
was coming into and have it be one year regardless
of what you saw, without any major blow ups or
toxic issues or otherwise. You usually anticipate giving someone a
little more time. So I was surprised by have you
heard anything about potential replacement? Because some people think, hey,
maybe it's Kurt Miller and that's why they made the move.
It wasn't as much about not giving her the time.
That's going out and finding someone that's available.
Speaker 2 (14:08):
If you look at ex Twitter or whatever it is,
it's me like.
Speaker 1 (14:13):
Someone said me, Okay, well you want to break some news.
Speaker 4 (14:20):
Not at all.
Speaker 2 (14:22):
There is not enough WNBA money in the world to
make me jump back in that chair.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
Okay, good to know, good to know, we'll mark that down.
I said, no, Lisa. So many superstars have chosen to
walk away from this Sky team, and it hurts every time.
Sylvia Fowls, Elena Dellada on Kandae Parker, Colia Copper, Marina Maybrey.
This year, what can this team do to entice players
to stick around? I think they've already started it, right.
Speaker 3 (14:47):
I think the argument that everyone has said is is
this organization needs to put in resources to support these players.
You know, right now, they've been It's no secret, so
it's not like I'm breaking news, but they work out
in Dear and and they have been. And so the
building of this new practice facility, the building that is
(15:08):
kind of wrapping their arms around this franchise is the
number one start. And honestly, so there's a groundbreaking next
week for that. It's it's going to be on the
move and and honestly, I would like to see if
if that is maybe the missing piece to some of
these players, and I think it's actually it's it's great motivation,
not just I'm not just talking about Sky specific stuff, Sarah.
(15:30):
I'm just talking about across the league, and you have
facilities like Vegas and Seattle and now Phoenix, you know,
and they're they're upping the ante about what these professional
athletes are worth and how they need to be supported.
That's good pressure, I think for across the league and
for other teams that are that are taking notice now.
Speaker 1 (15:48):
I completely agree, and as a fan of the team,
I also think they got to bring someone into that
front office that's got a cool factor. It feels like
they're just falling behind some of the other teams in
the league when it comes to keeping up with like
culture and merch and logo, and you know, the mascot
is certainly a help get the hell out of here
sky guy. No if it's the actual person in the
sky guy, but that mascot was broke there just seems
(16:10):
like there's some stuff that will give him a little
more of an edge and will make the players more
enthusiastic and feel like a part. Like you know, just
dumb things like the cake for angel reas like it
feels like little things that you can do that that
I don't know, change the perception of the team. Speaking
of Angel Rees' biggest name on the team right now,
a huge draw, hugely popular, and incredible first season, how
(16:31):
do they get her to buy in after what appeared
to be some real shock and disappointment about Tea Spoons
firing Lisa, Well, they make.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
The right choice, right and and you know, I don't
know who the Chicago Sky are going to pick.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
You know, they don't consult us in a in a
private little room.
Speaker 3 (16:46):
But you know it's got to be someone obviously, you know,
Angel had posted very publicly that she felt that connection
with Spoon. So you know, if the Chicago Sky you know,
wants to engage their and their franchise player right now
and in the face of the franchise, they need to,
you know, listen to what made Spoon connect with Angel
(17:09):
and and what could be that next coach connect with
Angel And but it's got to be someone that not
only connects on an emotional piece, you know, player to coach,
but you know it's got to be someone that also
challenges her, Right, That's that's going to have her ear
that I see you Angel at this level right now.
Speaker 1 (17:28):
But here's where we're going to take you to this level.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Right It's not just the the BFF kind of coach,
it's the coach is going to have to challenge her.
Speaker 1 (17:35):
So it'll it'll be interesting who that ends up being.
Speaker 2 (17:38):
Shod me.
Speaker 1 (17:38):
What was your takeaway from watching Angel all season. Biggest
thing that stood out.
Speaker 2 (17:43):
I was one of those that didn't know how her
game would translate. You know, I was never it was
never a question with me with Caitlyn. I knew Caitlin
was going to be a stud because she's she's long,
she smart, she can pass, she can shoot right. That translates.
And she's also more athletic than people think. She's a
bet she's be a better defender, you know, if she
if she wanted to be. But with Angel, I really
(18:04):
didn't know because she she's limited athletically. You know, perimeter
shooting has always been a weakness of hers. She's never
been very efficient. She's a career in college forty nine
percent field goal shooter, so that's not great for a
post player. But I underestimated like all those intangibles I
call them saw skills, you know, the resiliency, the heart,
the motor all you know, all of that. Like I
(18:26):
completely underestimated how well that would translate to the next level.
Like she is, she is an absolute dog. And I
remember going to the first day of training camp and
just listening to her, like she taught as a rookie.
Her first day of practice, just talk talk talk talk taught.
So now though, when I as I watch her as
a coaching stampoint, I'm a coach and I coach the
(18:47):
post players, and I get so excited because I think
about where she's going to be.
Speaker 4 (18:52):
Two three years from now.
Speaker 2 (18:53):
Like when I recruit a kid, I don't look at
them and go, oh, they've arrived. I look at them
and go, Okay, this is where they are now, but
this is where I can help them be. This is
where they're going to be as a junior. So I
think about where Angel is going to be her junior
year in the league, man, and there are just really
specific skills and techniques that she can just tweak and
(19:14):
lock in on, and she's going to be a dog like.
Speaker 4 (19:17):
She's going to be.
Speaker 1 (19:19):
Fun to watch.
Speaker 2 (19:20):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (19:20):
Yeah, Lisa is such a huge year for the league
in terms of growth and eyeballs and coverage. How do
they build and grow from here to sustain that but
also keep the basketball the main thing? Yeah? Great question.
Speaker 3 (19:34):
I think it starts too with network programming. You know,
I was involved with some CBS games this past summer.
I think the inventory is what I'm hearing from CBS
that's even growing.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
So you know, Assumi's wearing that that shirt.
Speaker 3 (19:47):
You know, everybody watches women's sports, but everybody also has
to know where to find women's sports. And to me,
not just talking about the w NBA this past year,
but just the growth of women's sports in particular, from
volleyball to softball, to women's college basketball to the WNBA,
you name it. For me, Sarah, it's been post COVID
shutdown or I don't know what it was, but I
think everyone had maybe a realization that maybe we're not
(20:09):
going about things the right way.
Speaker 1 (20:11):
And one of those we're not going about.
Speaker 3 (20:13):
Things the right way was how we were covering women's sports.
And so for the first time in a lot of
different places. I can speak to women's college basketball for example,
or softball, for the first time, we're seeing those sports
on Big Fox and ABC and CBS, and those were
places that those sports never appeared before. Right, So now
(20:35):
we have these games and these matchups on those platforms.
We need to continue to grow those platforms, in my opinion,
because if people are just flipping around and they don't
know what they're looking for, but they do see a
WNBA game on ABC or CBS.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
Or wherever it's going to be.
Speaker 3 (20:54):
You know they're going to stop and they're going to watch,
and that's what's happened the last year. So we just
need to continue to grow those networks. Platforms first and foremost,
in my.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
Opinion, building on Superstars, building on teams that people start
to understand and know the storylines of is huge for that.
And it's great to see that these final four semi
finalists all have these great storylines, these stories to build upon,
whether it's looking for their first title, trying to repeate,
trying to keep a sort of dynasty going. They continue tonight.
(21:22):
We got Liberty up two zero on the two time
defending champion Aces, and we've got the Sun and Links
tied at a Game of peace. So shimmy, what do
the Aces have to do to get back in this series?
Speaker 5 (21:31):
Oh?
Speaker 2 (21:31):
I think they'll win. I think they'll win at home
at least the first game. You know, the question that
I've had with the Aces all season is still it's depth.
It's the same issue that I had with them last year,
but for whatever reason, last year wasn't an issue. But
Chelsea Gray is a step slower. She's not Chelsea Gray
that we're used to, you know, Stokes. You know, it's
just Megan Gustisson. She's not it. You know, she's struggling
(21:56):
to defend against the Liberty. So I think Chelsea Gray
has to be better. She has to play better. And
then when Sidney Colson comes in, she's got to be better.
She can't be like the funny, silly Sydney. She's got
to be like a serious backup Sydney. But I think
it's going to be a tough road, But I do
(22:16):
think that they'll win their first game at home.
Speaker 1 (22:18):
Did you listen to Becky Hammond after Game two's loss,
because I was struck by how defeated she sounded almost
like she had accepted that they were out on this
when she was talking about how hard it was to
stay hungry, how all the other teams were really like
fired up while her teams were doing promotions and celebrating.
It struck me how much it sounded like someone that
(22:38):
was setting us up to be like ready for them
to be out.
Speaker 4 (22:42):
Becky's a realist. Becky is not stupid.
Speaker 2 (22:44):
Becky's one of the best coaches in this league, and
she's she's not dumb. And I felt like everybody else
got better. Minnesota got better, you know, Liberty got better.
I like Tip Hays, I think that was a great git.
But other than Tip, really what impact players in Vegas get?
How are they different than what they were last year?
Speaker 4 (23:04):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (23:05):
Yeah, I mean it also might be Becky doing the
psychology thing. If I'm going to go out there and
make you all pissed at me for sounding like I've
said that you don't have that fire anymore, you never
know what she's trying to pull that one, Lisa, what
do you see the Sun having to do to keep
minimizing the visa calier? Because it's been impressive through the
first two games. How they've made other people have to
step up for the links.
Speaker 4 (23:26):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (23:26):
Well, I mean I love this series because it's it's
first of all, we just start with the coaching, and
it's two coaches that I have the utmost respect for.
And so I just love watching a series like this
because it is right up Cheryl Reeve and Stephanie White's
alli like just the x's and o's and Okay, now
we're you gonna scheme this way and this way. You know,
(23:48):
I just think that whenever you think of Connecticut, you
just think about their physicality first and foremost, right, and
then when you think of Minnesota's offense, you think about
the fluidity and.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
How they share the ball.
Speaker 3 (23:59):
So there's the contrast between strengths there, like what's gonna
what's gonna win out in this series? In my opinion,
is it the defensive physicality. Is it somehow Minnesota being
able to find that that flow in fluidity to be
able to move the ball around enough to be able
to free up someone like Nafisa Collier. So I think
it starts there first and foremost. But they're two really
(24:21):
great defensive teams. And so I know that defense isn't
like a sexy thing right to talk about, but but
that's what you're gonna get with with this series. And
and I'm just I'm excited to watch tonight to see, like,
just like I said, it's a chess match between two
of the best coaches who are doing it right now.
Speaker 1 (24:41):
Yeah, And it feels like the Sun are aware that
they are long and strong. So if they guck up
the offense that the Links is trying to put together,
it just it gets stuck. And that is not what
we've seen when the Links are doing their best. Obviously,
it's that flow. I feel like we got to see
a big game from Fee though, when you put up
eighty in the first round and then hold New like
they did. I mean, I know it's a completely different
(25:03):
team and that's part of the reason the sunner here,
but I don't know, be hard to see her get
shut down a third game in a row. Shimmy, I
could see that you're dying to get in here.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
I was just so annoyed after the first two games.
They ESPN had it on the ticker, you know, like
the FISA call your average forty two points a game
in the first round and I'm like, it's two games
against like a much lower seed.
Speaker 4 (25:28):
Everybody calmed down.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
Wow, I'm gonna tell Fee right now. I mean, you
don't want to give her her shine for eighty points
and two games. You don't have to, But that's impressive
to me. Two games are not that's a playoff series.
Speaker 4 (25:39):
It's impressive.
Speaker 1 (25:40):
It's yeah. But also it reminded me that I don't
even care if it's a blowout. I want to see
more than two games for a sweep. That's just how
I feel about about US. A three game series. It
makes it tough. Okay, So do we have picks for
who's gonna end up in the finals? Who you got Shimmy.
Speaker 4 (25:57):
Minnesota and Liberty?
Speaker 3 (26:00):
Okay, Lisa, I picked a long time ago, the Aces.
So I feel like if I don't pick the Aces,
my wife is just going to throw something at me
from the other room, you know. And can I just
say this. I picked the Aces because I fell in
love with them right before the Olympic All Star Break
and it was right when Chelsea Gray came back and
I forget what their record was, but it was like
nine and two or ten and one or something in
(26:21):
the last eleven games. And I'm like, Okay, that's the
Aces that has won the last two championships. And I
think that's the Aces that Becky Hammond keeps you talking
about the frustration that she keeps thinking.
Speaker 1 (26:32):
That is going to show up.
Speaker 3 (26:34):
So I guess I have to go Aces because I've
said Aces, and I want my wife to still like me,
So I'll say Aces and Links in the finals.
Speaker 1 (26:43):
Okay, all right, we got to put some money on
this in the householder some sort of chore or something
that nobody wants to do. Okay, last question, We do
this a lot with group chat. It's called fight me.
I said what I said, So you know what fight me?
You have to make declareative statement that we will then
put on the internet for people to fight you about.
It feels like that happens even when we don't want to,
(27:05):
but this time we're asking for it. So you can
only select players from the four remaining teams, and you
have to make a three person all fit team. The
tunnel is the runway. There are so many stylish players
to choose from, but you only get three. Who you
got and who wants to start?
Speaker 3 (27:25):
Lisa And uh, Okay, we're not talking about like athleticism, right,
We're talking about yeah.
Speaker 1 (27:36):
Not fitness levels and not even means you're hot. We're
talking fits as I mean you are. It's a kathlete, right.
So I just wanted to make sure. I just wanted
to make sure we're not talking about, you know, the
fitness fit. You know, we've been talking about fee.
Speaker 3 (27:51):
I I Likenfisa Collier's look sometimes, Like I see all
these photos pop up or the videos and everything, and
I'm like, oh, like she actually she wears some stuff
that I'm like, I wonder where she got that at
you know, so I think it's classy, it's professional. So
I'll start with fee Okay.
Speaker 2 (28:06):
Shim you gotta pick, I'll go with since I stick
with Minnesota, I'll go with Corny Williams.
Speaker 4 (28:14):
Okay, it's you know, the boy is chic thing. I
dig it.
Speaker 1 (28:19):
I like it, Okay, Lisa, pick number two. Pick number two.
Speaker 3 (28:22):
I'm gonna go Kelsey plumb only because I'm like halfway
jealous of her core that she's always displayed, only halfway.
Speaker 1 (28:30):
Like fully fully, oh fully, I'm all in.
Speaker 3 (28:33):
I'm definitely jealous of her core. And I always am
intrigued because her her outfits almost look like there's gonna
be a wardrobe malfunction with some of the stuff that
she wears, and like amber right, and and like when
she's walking down the tunnel, I'm like ooh, and then
she always makes it through, and I'm just like, way
to go, Kelsey.
Speaker 1 (28:52):
And she always looks a bit like an assassin, which
I appreciate, like in a movie where she's like, first
she's gonna seduce the guy and then him and it's
very intriguing. Shimmy, pick number two.
Speaker 4 (29:05):
You just described her ex husband's music video.
Speaker 1 (29:07):
By the way, yeah, one thousand percent with that broke
ass fake Kelsey plummet it. I'm like, come on, do
better than that.
Speaker 2 (29:15):
I'm gonna go, So I'll stick with the Asis. I'm
gonna go with Asia. I'm gonna go with the MVP.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
Okay, because she can make uh you know, a suit
all that look good with her pearls.
Speaker 2 (29:27):
But she can also rock a white white tea like
like I've never seen so.
Speaker 1 (29:31):
Killer white tea. All right, Last member of your all
fit team, Lisa.
Speaker 3 (29:35):
At some point the married couple has to join, right,
So my third pick was Asia, but I am and
she looks great in all of her other fits. But
I'm going T shirt Asia.
Speaker 1 (29:45):
T shirt Asia specific.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
That's when you know that she means business. And she's
T shirt Asia walking down the tunnel.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
That's right.
Speaker 2 (29:52):
All right, last picky, I'm going outside the box here.
I'm gonna go Connecticut Veronica Burton. If you if you
look in her instagram, she is classic. She's stylish Ronica
BT peache.
Speaker 1 (30:05):
Okay, I love those picks. Here are my picks. Okay,
so this is boring because Lisa, you already picked this person.
But yeah, Kelsey Plum, not only the style and the
like assassin like vibes, but also always impressed that how
she keeps all that stuff in the places where it
needs to be, Like, that's impressive. I'm gonna go a
little apo here and go with Dja Carrington. It's not
(30:25):
that I would want to rock her fits, but the
boldness with which she wears her clothes, Like sometimes she's
looking straight up legally blonde, and sometimes she looks like
she's going to the club, and sometimes she's like really
casual but still looks completely perfect, right down to every
piece of hair everything, So like it's just the way
she pulls it all together. And then Sid Colson like,
I'm not gonna wear a three part flower denim shirt
(30:48):
suit with blue knee hives, but she is, and she's
pulling it off. I'm not gonna wear a suit with
faces on it and no shirt underneath, but she's pulling
off like Sid every time she walks through the tunnel,
I'm a little bit surprised by what she has on,
and she is always crushing it. So those are my three,
all right? Hit us up on social at Sarah Spain
on Twitter at Spain two three two three on Insta,
(31:09):
I'll tag these ladies too, and their picks. Tell us
what we got wrong, tell us who you like to see,
tell us your all fit team ladies. Thank you so
much for coming on. I wish we could go longer,
but we just gave people an hour and twenty minute episode,
so we're going to keep it tight today. You guys
are the best. Enjoy the game tonight. Thank you, Sarah,
Thank you. We gotta go pay some bills. Don't go anywhere.
(31:32):
If you do, bring us with you. You came back.
We're back too, Welcome back slices Now. Yesterday we asked
for your thoughts on our episode with USA Today columnist
Christine Brennan, and boy, did you have a lot of them.
We wanted to highlight a few of them. And by
(31:53):
the way, if there are any of you who skipped
that episode, maybe because you got beef with Christine's coverage
this year, or maybe because it was super long, I'd
really recommend taking a listen. It wasn't about platforming someone.
It was about trying to understand, inform, and hopefully advance
the conversation. Okay, back to your thoughts. First up, we
got a voicemail from Kream in New York here's the message.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
Hi there, Sarah and the Big Game crew. This is
Kareema calling from New York and I just listened to
this interview that you had with Christine Grinnan, and I
have to say your patience throughout was just astounding because
me listening to it, I was getting so frustrated.
Speaker 1 (32:33):
She continued, I.
Speaker 5 (32:34):
Give you all the credit for having her on and
allowing her the space to kind of get out her
side of it, which she just didn't help her case.
And I will say that and once again thank you
for having her on and putting up the good fight
(32:55):
for all of us, those in the WNBA and fandom,
you know. But I just I was very disappointed in
her and her inability to say I screwed up and
I got to do better and take it on the chin.
She just couldn't do that. But that's it. But great
(33:20):
doubt as always, Sarah, go ahead the fe right bye.
Speaker 1 (33:24):
Thanks Greama. I appreciate it. We also got an email
from Ashley f that read, in part, listening to Christine
felt a bit like hearing my dad, a white man
born in the fifties, refer to the time in our
country's history before social issues permeated politics and our cultural climate,
as the quote good old days. I trust that neither
is expressly ill intentioned, but they are missing a piece
of the puzzle. I take my dad to task each
(33:45):
time he dares to use the expression, and I have
a lot of respect for Sarah taking Christine to task.
I hope Christine listens to this episode. Sometimes it's hard
to fully grasp things while we're still inside of them,
the way a fish doesn't know water. Listening to this
conversation might afford her a more objective perspective at her
position in the space and the implications of such. Thanks
so much, Ashley, I agree with that, and I hope
it came across that I really was trying to sort
(34:06):
of help Christine understand the perspective people had about her
coverage and see that even if her intentions are correct,
if her impact is different than what she intends, that's
important to recognize and then reassess and be self aware about.
I'm not sure if we got there, but hopefully if
she listens to the episode, we do. Finally, we got
an email from Doug Ratcliffe that says, in part, I'm
not always great at articulating things, but I'll try to
(34:27):
explain my biggest takeaway from this interview. I'm going to
cheat and use something Sarah always says, yes, and I
feel like Christine could use a little yes and yes.
She is an accomplished journalist who has fought for women
to be seen in the past, and she could certainly
learn how to better navigate interviews with WNBA players while
not perpetuating tropes that feed trolls. Lord knows the trolls
are willing and waiting to pounce. It seemed to me
(34:49):
that Christine was more interested in yes, but yes. These
are the types of questions she has asked hundreds of times,
but it's not her fault people are reacting to them
the way that they are. It's almost like she felt
like her past experiences were more important than the present reactions.
I think it's fair to ask people, all people, to
learn how to navigate in new spaces. Christine is new
to covering the league, and the attention the WNBA has
(35:10):
received this year is unprecedented. What isn't new here are
the issues plaguing the league, racism, misogyny, homophobia, et cetera,
and all journalists covering the sport should be mindful in
their questioning because of these issues. Extremely well said, Doug.
Do you want to write for the show, give us
a call, Thank you for listening, Thank you for your input.
Really well said, and thank you to everyone who chimed in,
(35:30):
and we're going to keep talking about it. I know
we've got some more thoughts to share amongst ourselves coming
up next week. We love that you're listening, and we
always want you to get in the game every day too,
So here's our good gameplay of the day. Keep those
thoughts coming on that interview, but also don't miss the
electric game threes in the WNBA tonight and the games
on Sunday sure to be some great ball. Hit us
up on email good game at wondermedianetwork dot com or

didn't you in a whole day without it? It's easy
watch that thing where you forget you put pimple patches
on at night and then you go out in public
the next Day rating zero out of five zits review
(36:14):
Not cool man. You're just walking the dog or in
line getting coffee, all smiles and good mornings, and then
you hop in the car or get back to the house,
catch sight of the ZiT stickers dotting your face and
wonder just how many people notice them? Not to mention like,
isn't there an age where you're supposed to stop getting zits?
Come on, bro, now it's your turn. Rate and review.
(36:35):
