Welcome to today's episode of The Heartbeat of Faith Podcast. If you've ever found yourself in moments of isolation or felt like your prayers were unheard, remember that there's a loving Counselor who diligently conveys your thoughts, emotions, and burdens to God. I'm Dr. Andrew Farley, and on this episode, we continue our profound exploration of the Spirit of God. We delve into the question of who the Holy Spirit is, what the Bible reveals about Him, and how we're meant to connect with Him. Last time, we unearthed the Holy Spirit as God's life-giving breath, and today, we unravel His significance to Jesus and, by extension, to you and me. Jesus identified the Holy Spirit as the "counselor" or "helper," and that's precisely who He is for anyone willing to receive Him.

As we explore the life of Jesus, we often focus on the grand miracles, but we mustn't overlook the daily guidance of the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit isn't just a tool for extraordinary purposes; He is God's ever-present voice and guidance in our lives. In Romans 8:26-27, Paul emphasizes the Holy Spirit's role in aiding our weaknesses, interceding for us when we don't know how to pray. He knows our hearts and communicates our deepest desires to God. So, even when you feel weak, distant, or unheard in your prayers, remember that the loving Counselor is there, delivering your thoughts, emotions, and struggles to God. If you find yourself feeling alone and not heard or understood,
like your prayers are falling on deaf ears, you can
know for certain that you have a loving counselor in
the Holy Spirit who is delivering your thoughts, feelings and
heartache to God for you. Hello, I'm doctor Andrew Farley

(02:57):
with today's episode of the Heartbeat of Faith podcast. Today
we continue our deep dive into the Spirit of God.
Who is he, what does the Bible say about him?
And how are we supposed to relate to him. Last episode,
we went through past stories to understand the Holy Spirit

(03:18):
as God's life giving and sustaining breath. Today we look
at who the Spirit was to Jesus and who he
is to you and me. Jesus described the Holy Spirit
as the counselor or helper, and that's who he is
to anyone who asks to receive him.

Speaker 3 (03:39):
Most certainly, I tell you, he who believes in me
the works that I do, he will do also, and
he will do greater works than these. Because I am
going to my Father. Whatever you will ask in my name,
I will do it, that the Father may be glorified
in the Son. If you will ask anything in my name,

(04:02):
I will do it. If you love me keep my commandments,
I will pray to the Father, and he will give
you another counselor, that he may be with you forever.
The Spirit of Truth, whom the world can't receive for
it doesn't see him and doesn't know him. You know him,

(04:22):
for he lives with you and will be in you.
I will not leave you orphans. I will come to
you yet a little while, and the world will see
me no more.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
But you will see me.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Because I live, You will live also. In that day.
You will know that I am in my Father, and
you in me, and I in you. One who has
my commandments and keeps them. That person is one who
loves me. One who loves me will be loved by
my Father, and I will love him and will reveal

(04:59):
myself self to him John fourteen twelve through twenty one.

Speaker 2 (05:06):
The Holy Spirit has done an incredible work in us
as believers. Through his presence, we've been born again with
new hearts and new spirits. We're no longer the same
people we once were. The Spirit of God now resides
within us, guiding us, empowering us, and transforming us from

(05:30):
the inside out. We've been made new creations in Christ,
with new desires and a new nature. As children of God,
we have the privilege of experiencing a close and intimate
relationship with our heavenly Father. The Holy Spirit serves as
a constant reminder of this truth. He testifies to our

(05:54):
spirits that were indeed children of God, loved and accepted
by Him. We can rest in the assurance that we're
never alone, for the Spirit of God is always with us,
leading us into all truth and empowering us to live
the abundant life that Jesus has promised. Jesus described the

(06:19):
Holy Spirit as a present, loving and wise counselor who
would guide the disciples in his place. We see Jesus
relying on the Holy Spirit to guide and sustain him
throughout the Bible. After he ascended into heaven, he promised
that the Holy Spirit would come upon them for the

(06:40):
mission ahead. They prayed earnestly for him, and he showed up,
both in grand gestures and small promptings. In our last episode,
we were reminded of the grand entrance of the Holy
Spirit at Pentecost, fire descended from the sky, and the

(07:00):
disciples trusted him for wonders in their midst. However, the
Holy Spirit sometimes worked silently or subtly, like the advice
of a wise friend.

Speaker 3 (07:18):
It was a truly spirit filled experience for Philip. He
rose to the call of God and found joy in
connecting with the people of Samaria. Then, like a still
small voice whispering in his ears, Philip heard the prompting
of God, rise and look south. There is a road
that goes from Jerusalem to Gaza. Philip nodded and listened

(07:40):
to the prompting nudge of God's Spirit. Filled with purpose,
Philip marched towards the desert.

Speaker 2 (07:48):
Philip witnessed miraculous healings and tongues of fire fall from
the sky, but he was also prompted by the whispers
of God's voice. When we look at the life of Jesus,
it's easy for us to focus solely on the miracles,
but we shouldn't miss the importance of the day to

(08:09):
day guidance of the Holy Spirit. God's ever present, prompting
in counsel is experienced through his spirit. He's the connector
between our new hearts and God's heart. Listen to Paul
talk about the Holy Spirit with delight in his letter
to the Romans.

Speaker 3 (08:29):
In the same way, the Spirit also helps our weaknesses,
for we don't know how to pray as we ought,
but the Spirit himself makes intercession for us with groanings
which can't be uttered. He who searches the hearts knows
what is on the Spirit's mind, because he makes intercession
for the saints. According to God Romans eight twenty six

(08:53):
through twenty seven.

Speaker 2 (08:55):
When you feel too overwhelmed, confused, or anxious to pray,
the Holy Spirit prays for you on your behalf to God.
When you feel dirty or distant from God, the Holy
Spirit reminds you that you're always clean and close to
Him because of the finished work of Jesus Christ. If

(09:18):
you find yourself feeling alone or not heard or understood,
like your prayers are falling on deaf ears, you can
know for sure that you have a loving counselor who
is delivering your thoughts, feelings, and heartache to God for
you with groans that are too deep for words. Let

(09:40):
us embrace the reality of the Holy Spirit's work in
our lives. Let us walk in the confidence of our
new identity as children of God, knowing we've been born
again by the Spirit. May we rely on the Holy
Spirit's guidance and power, allowing him to us into a

(10:00):
deeper understanding of God's love and grace. The Holy Spirit
is our constant companion, our counselor, and our source of strength.
Let us trust his work in us and thereby enjoy
the fullness of life in Christ. Next time, we'll explore

(10:21):
the specific ways the Holy Spirit can inspire you and
me and how He works through our unique personalities, causing
us to bear fruit for his purpose. Thank you for
