Speaker 1 (00:01):
Morning Run with Amy and TJ and iHeartRadio Podcast. Good
morning everyone, and welcome to this Friday edition of Morning Run.
It is Friday, April twenty fifth. Thank goodness.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
I'm Ae Robots and I'm TJ. Holmes, and we are
in different places today. I am, for whatever reason, bouncing
off the walls. You not so much. This is We're
wrapping up a long week.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
I'm scraping myself off the floor.
Speaker 2 (00:27):
It's okay to be that headway. But well, yes, wherever
you are, hope you are having a good start to
your Friday and on our run today. Saint Peter's was
open late once again last night to accommodate thousands paying
their respects to Pope Francis. Now, final preparations are underway
for tomorrow's funeral. President Trump and former President Biden are
(00:48):
both reportedly heading the.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
Wrong President Trump takes on Putin in a social media post,
telling him to stop attacking Ukraine as he grows increasingly
frustrated at the failed attempts for a peace deal, and
in a confusing back and forth, it remains unclear whether
the US and China are actually negotiating an end to
the trade war. Trump says they are China, says nah Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:11):
Also this morning, President Trump has made an emergency appeal
to the Supreme Court to ban a specific group of
people from serving in the US military immediately. Also, a
brand new bright red Trump hat is available for order
online now. It has a new message on the front
that's raising a lot of eyebrows.
Speaker 1 (01:30):
Plus, NFL Hall of Famer Shannon Sharp has announced he
is voluntarily stepping away from his ESPN hosting duties following
that fifty million dollars sexual assault lawsuit against him.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
Also on this morning's Ron, what a night one of
the NFL draft, and the most talked about player is
the one who wasn't drafted. Also, a Kobe Bryant jersey
set a record at auction. It's special not just because
he wore it, but because of exactly when he wore it.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
And to that, yeah, a record at auction, it was
quite the price. Tag. Can't wait to share it with everyone.
But we do begin our run in Rome, where the
Vatican says more than one hundred and twenty eight thousand
people have already passed by Pope Francis's casket. They kept
the doors open to Saint Peter's Basilica overnight until two
thirty am Local time, and then reopened about three hours
(02:22):
later at five thirty.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Yeah, there's been a steady stream of visitors waiting for
hours to pay their respects to the Pope. Pope France's
body will continue to lie and stay throughout the day
today until late tonight. Initially the Vatican had official hours
for viewing, but each night they've extended those hours significantly
to make sure everybody who was in line had the
opportunity to see the Pope's open casket.
Speaker 1 (02:42):
It's pretty cool that they've been doing that, and so
with that in mind, it remains to be seen when
they'll actually close the doors to the Basilica tonight. It
was supposed to be at seven pm Local time, as
preparations are underway for the Pope's funeral tomorrow morning. That
will happen at ten am in Rome. At Rome in
Rome time, sorry, four am Eastern time. It all happens
(03:02):
in Saint Peter's Square. So far, one hundred and thirty
foreign delegations have confirmed they will attend the funeral. That
includes fifty heads of state and ten reigning sovereigns.
Speaker 2 (03:13):
Yes, and it looks like President Trump and First Lady Milania,
who already previously announced they'd be going. They're going to
have some company in Rome. CBS News reporting former President
Joe Biden also plans on attending the Pope's funeral. Others
of note Prince William going to be there as well
as President Zelenski. We did get official word that President
Putin of Russia is not going to be attending. In total,
(03:34):
the Vatican expects more than two hundred thousand people to attend.
The funeral officially begins nine days of morning prayers and
remembrance for Pope Francis. Do I have right? Local time?
Is what? For the funeral?
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Beginning ten am Local time? That means four am Eastern time,
which means we still have to go to bed early tonight.
Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yes, this is something the world wants to see. This
is one of those rare events that everybody is going
to watch, and certainly it's worth getting up.
Speaker 1 (04:00):
Yes, and we will be doing that all right. Next
up on the Run. After slamming President Putin in a
truth social post, President Trump softened his approach later in
the day, now saying he thinks Putin is serious about
a peace deal with Ukraine. Russia attacked Kiev on Thursday,
in the deadliest attack since last July, killing at least
twelve and wounding ninety others. Yeah.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
President Trump posted a strong language against Putin, initially writing
I am not happy with the Russian strikes on Kiev.
Not necessary and very bad timing. Vladimir stop. Five hundred
soldiers a week are dying. Let's get the peace deal
done now. It's not unusual for President Trump to use
that kind of strong language against world leaders, against anybody
(04:42):
he wants to. For that matter, he hasn't gone this
far necessarily in criticizing Putin. Instead, he's mostly pointing his
finger at Ukraine President Zelensky, calling him a dictator and
the reason that there isn't a deal done yet.
Speaker 1 (04:55):
So far, there hasn't been a response from Putin. But
when asked if he thought Putin would listen to his
post to stop striking Kiev, Trump said I do. And
he also told reporters yesterday that both sides want peace,
but that he has his own deadline for Putin and
Zelensky to come to an agreement, and he says he
wants it to be fast.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
Yeah. The administration, including Executor of State Marco Rubio have
all said that Trump may walk away from the negotiations
if the two sides can't come to an agreement and soon,
the President saying this in the Oval Office yesterday. This
isn't my war, It's.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
Biden's war, all right, next up on the run. It
is a bizarre international back and forth of yes, we did, no,
we didn't, and who knows what really is going on
between the US and China. We certainly don't. Trump told
reporters in the Oval Office that US officials met with
Chinese officials on Thursday morning to discuss the escalating trade war,
(05:52):
after China emphatically denied that the two countries have not
met or discussed tariffs.
Speaker 2 (05:57):
Okay, So to be sure, there two sides are saying
the exact opposite things, saying a meeting has happened and
we discussed tariffs, the other saying absolutely not correct. That's fair, okay.
So this is from the Chinese Foreign Minister saying that
China and the US had not conducted consultations or negotiations
on tariffs, let alone reach an agreement, adding that the
(06:20):
reports to the contrary were false. China has called on
Trump to cancel its tariffs on Chinese goods to show
that he's serious about ending the trade war, saying the
person who tied the bell must untie it. Some are
familiar with that phrase, some are not. I wasn't necessarily,
but it essentially means, hey, you started it, you need
to finish it.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
You went on a deep dive this morning. You said, wait,
what did they say? And what does that mean? It's
a Chinese proverb. Correct.
Speaker 2 (06:44):
Some places do say that you don't see a lot
about it, but one explanation was yes, in fact, so
we don't say that necessarily here a lot.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, because I don't even know what tying a bell means.
But anyway, apparently yes, the meaning is understood. China even
sent back Boeing planes this week that it ordered from
the US in retaliation for Trump's tariffs. That didn't make
Trump too happy.
Speaker 2 (07:05):
I didn't know you could. You can return a lot
of stuff. I didn't think you can return.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
The plane planes plural. While Trump has said his Chinese
tariffs would come down significantly, he did make this clear.
He said they won't be at zero and right now.
Just to be clear, if you needed a reminder, Trump
has a one hundred and forty five percent tariff on
all Chinese imports. China has a one hundred and twenty
five percent tariff on all American goods. This is unsustainable.
(07:30):
Clearly something has to happen. When and how and if
anything has happened already remains to be seen.
Speaker 2 (07:37):
All Right, we'll keep running on this Ririday morning. The
next leg takes us to the steps of the Supreme Court,
where President Trump has made an emergency appeal to the justices.
So what's the emergency. He wants to immediately start banning
transgender people from serving in the military.
Speaker 1 (07:54):
You might remember the President signed in executive order his
first week in office that bars trans troops from serving.
But the order has not held up in several legal
challenges in lower courts, so the ban has remained on hold. Well,
now the President is hoping for better luck with the
Supreme Court and has asked the justices to allow the
band to immediately take effect.
Speaker 2 (08:14):
Yeah, transgender soldiers have been openly serving in the military
under policy changes made by President Obama in twenty sixteen.
According to the Military, in case you were wondering, there
are forty two hundred trans members of the military. That
represents about zero point two percent of all service members.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
All right, next up on our run, there is a
new red hat being sold on Trump store dot com.
It looks like the make America Great Again hats that
have been a staple of the Trump campaign for years now.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
Yeah, but this hat has a different message. On the front.
It says Trump twenty twenty eight. And that raised a
few eyebrows, especially since the president has recently suggested he
might find a way to run for a.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Third term recently and repeatedly. I believe it's being sold
for fifty bucks and it's the first item listed in
the hats section of the website, which is the official
store of the Trump organization. The description of the item reads,
the future looks bright, rewrite the rules with the Trump
twenty twenty eight high crown hat fully embroidered with a
(09:19):
snap closure in the back. This will become your new
go to hat.
Speaker 2 (09:24):
Look, I copy it and paste exactly what it says
right there. So, by the way, Jen, this happened. No,
the Constitution is pretty explicit about this. Nobody can seek
a third term. The language no person shall be elected
to the office of the President more than once twenty.
Speaker 1 (09:39):
Second more than twice you mean, excuse me more than twice.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Excuse me, Wow, I said you were the tired one.
But Trump again, like you said, he has mentioned this repeatedly,
but he won't completely rule it out every time he
gets asked about it, so it keeps raising eyebrows. He
came up with a couple of scenarios. I think you
were the one that first brought us in my attention.
But there's a way for him to do this, but
it would require hire him to run as vice president
with Jadie Vance and then they do a switcher root
(10:05):
that's not supposed to happen either a continent to the Constitution.
But it was just the hats are interesting. They're being
sold in. One of his sons is helping to promote it,
has has it on in advertising.
Speaker 1 (10:17):
How old will Trump be in twenty twenty eight?
Speaker 2 (10:19):
Too old to be president?
Speaker 1 (10:20):
Eighty eighty eight?
Speaker 2 (10:22):
Three's for another term?
Speaker 1 (10:24):
Yeah, there are there are a lot of obstacles on
that path to a third term.
Speaker 2 (10:28):
I would say, let's stay with it here, folks, on
this Friday morning run, when we come back, when we
talk about what happened at night one of the NFL
Draft and the guy everybody's talking about didn't even get drafted. Also,
one of the most expensive jerseys ever sold at auction.
It belonged to Kobe but the key is exactly when
(10:49):
he wore.
Speaker 1 (10:50):
Stay with us, Welcome back to this Friday morning run
and next up on the Run. NFL Hall of Famer
and ESPN host Shannon Sharp is off the air at
ESPN for now after that fifty million dollars sexual assault
(11:12):
lawsuit was filed against him.
Speaker 2 (11:14):
Sharp is a regular on the network's First Take program.
He announced yesterday that he was electing to step aside
from his ESPN duties, saying in a statement, I will
be devoting this time to my family and responding and
dealing with these false and disruptive allegations set against me.
I sincerely appreciate the overwhelming and ongoing support I have
received from my family, friends, and colleagues.
Speaker 1 (11:37):
Sharp remained on the air this week, and it was
business as usual after news of the lawsuit, which he
called blatant c a blatant, cynical attempt to shake him
down for millions of dollars. A woman only identified as
Jane Doe filed the suit in Nevada, claiming Sharp raped
her on two occasions, was abusive and even threatened to
kill her during what she calls a rocky, consensual two
(11:59):
year relationship. She claimed she met the former All Pro
tight end at a gym in twenty twenty three, when
she was nineteen and he was fifty four.
Speaker 2 (12:08):
So since the initial word of a lawsuit came out
earlier this week, there's been now a trickle of details
to continue to come out. A lot of it is
quite disturbing that have added to this story. Maybe they
had more to do with why he decided after a
few days toy, Hey, I need to get off the
air now. Shannon Sharp is absolutely one of the best
to ever play at that position at tight end. He
won three Super Bowls. When he retired, he was the
(12:30):
all time leader in catches, yards and touchdowns for tight ends.
Speaker 1 (12:33):
Yeah, and he has since then put together an impressive
media career. In addition to his ESPN role, he hosts
the Shaysha Club podcast. Sharp says he does plan to
return to ESPN at the start of the NFL preseason,
which begins on July thirty first.
Speaker 2 (12:50):
We will continue now on this Friday morning. Ron The
next leg takes us to Green Bay, Wisconsin, where the
most talked about player prior to last night's NFL Draft,
was still the most talked about player on Night one
of the NFL Draft because he wasn't even drafted. We're
talking about Colorado's star quarterback Shador Sanders. He did not
(13:10):
hear his name called in round one of the draft,
which started yes last night in Green Bay.
Speaker 1 (13:15):
And that was a shocker to some. Sanders has been
a standout the past couple of years at Colorado, where
he played for his dad, Hall of Famer and Dion Sanders.
Sanders sliding out of the first round wasn't a shocker
if you listen to some draft analysts who said, though
he's good, he's not a first round elite quarterback.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
He is, though a polarizing figure. He's a social media star.
He's raked in endorsement deals, He's shown up in national commercials.
He's also just a confident dude, has the big personality,
possesses some of that signature Dion Sanders swag, and frankly,
some people don't like that. In the last couple of days,
some anonymous sources people don't want to put their name
(13:56):
to some of the negative comments. They're talking about his
attitude and things like that. Wonder if that had any impact.
We don't know. We'll see where he might be drafted.
Of course, it's seven rounds. That was just round one.
We'll see if he get picked up today when the
second round gets underway tonight.
Speaker 1 (14:09):
As for last night, as was expected, quarterback cam Ward
of Miami went number one overall to the Tennessee Titans
and then two way. Colorado's star and Heisman Trophy winner
Travis Hunter was taken by the Jacksonville Jaguars and he
danced his way all the way to the stage. That
was the bright pink. Yeah, that was really fun. His
(14:31):
suit was like a was it like a silky hot pink.
Speaker 2 (14:35):
It was a hot pink. He wore all black, but
it was double breasted, had a few details on it,
but that was He has a big personality. He's been
great for college football. But he just he got up
and it was a long walk they had to get
to the stage. He danced and played and enjoyed it
was That was just pure joy and I love seeing that.
Speaker 1 (14:52):
Yes, there was a real warmth. You're rooting for him,
you know as he walked up.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
All right, we got the final leg of our Friday
Morning run Now and a Kobe Bryant jersey just sold
at auction for seven million dollars. That's the most expensive
piece of Kobe memorabilia ever sold. It's also the second
most expensive NBA jersey ever sold.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
So what makes this Kobe jersey so special? Well, it
is the first one he ever wore in his NBA career.
It's from his nineteen ninety six rookie season. He had
it on for his preseason debut as well as his
first regular season game action on November three of nineteen ninety.
Speaker 2 (15:30):
Six, Kobe Bryant's first game ever that he got into
as a pro. This was his stat line, zero points.
He missed the only shot he took, so he was
zero for one. He had one rebound and one blocked shot.
That's amazing, right, We always think what you think of
him as a Hall of Fame and all these things.
We all struggled when we started out at something, including
(15:53):
him who went on to be a Hall of Famer
and win five championships. Championships we mentioned. It's the second
most expensive NBA jersey. The most expensive, no surprise, belonged
to Michael Jordan. It was a jersey he wore in
his final Championship series that last dance when he won
his final championship. A previous Kobe jersey sold for five
point eight million dollars. And this was just for U
(16:13):
Robes a fun fact, what was the most expensive sports
jersey ever sold?
Speaker 1 (16:20):
My jaws dropped because I see you have it written here.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
It was Babe Ruth twenty four million dollars.
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Twenty four million dollars for a jersey.
Speaker 2 (16:29):
And some people will think, well, why if you don't know,
You might not know a lot about Babe Ruth, but
a lot of people know the game he called his shot.
He pointed before the pitcher let the ball go. He
pointed and said, I'm about to hit a home run
that game. It's that jersey. Twenty four million.
Speaker 1 (16:45):
Woo.
Speaker 2 (16:46):
That is just that's sports mind blowing another level. All right.
So before we leave you folks on this Friday, something
we would like for you to consider. It's our quote
of the day. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (16:56):
I picked this one as we're heading into the weekend
because people may plans and you know, just trying to
figure out what they're gonna do. So I loved this
quote is from Tony Robbins. Life is about the moments.
Don't wait for them, create them right now. And I
was feeling a little unmotivated today. You actually asked me
when we woke up what our plans were or what
(17:18):
my plans were for that usually it's just our plans,
and I kind of just like, I don't even think
I said a word. It was nonsensical. So this one
spoke to me. It's just a reminder, even when you're
feeling maybe unmotivated or a little tired, you know what
life is about, the moments. Don't wait for them, create them.
Speaker 2 (17:39):
Create some then roads because I don't know, I'm bouncing
off the walls, not quite there yet. That's okay, that
is okay. I've had music on. Yes, folks, here you go.
Here's some music that might motivate you. Go listen to
Good Things Grow on the Snow White soundtrack. Oh, listen
to Niko Moons back nine. Two songs that'll get you
going this morning for one reason or another.
Speaker 1 (17:59):
Yes, And we've been playing them on repeat. Actually it's
been helping. I need one more cup of coffee and
I'll be ready to go. But thank you everyone for
running with us on this Friday I'm Amy Robots
Speaker 2 (18:09):
And on TJ Holmes, Well, we will see you soon.
