everybody Hey? Scott Patterson Pop Culture, Season three, episode nineteen
keg Max, Uh and Uh Laurel. I. Let's start out
with the first scene, the opening scene where Laurel and
Royer sitting on the couch trying to figure out what
to do on a Friday night because they ain't going
to Richard and Emily's no mo because there is bad blood.

(00:44):
Now imagine that between mother and daughter. Um. And so
they make a phone call, right and uh and and
Rory makes a phone call and Richard answers, and she
finds out that they are alreadying their brains out at
the Gilmore Rules. It's like Friday at dinner. What are

(01:04):
they doing. They're probably just sitting there with a you know,
a an overly bright light bulbs no heat, just to
rub it in. And you know, we're miserable because we
don't have these two here. No, they are putting on
the rids man, they have tuxedos, they have gowns on,
they're they're serving mushroom caps. And by the way, that

(01:25):
was one of my favorite lines of the entire episode
was when Rory just looked at her mom and said,
but mushroom caps just she was on a mushroom app
does exactly and I know they said cap, but I
turned it to app. I love anything mushroom app absolutely
absolutely so. Anyway, so Rory says, now it just drives

(01:46):
me crazy. It's if you'd like to do shaven a
haircut without the last part. You know, first of all,
can I ask you guys something, How does Rory know
what that is? How does Rory know what shaven a
haircut is? Musical terms? Well, well, we'll go to that.
That's a hundred year old reference, by the way, um,

(02:09):
because I looked it up and I listened to the
song and so any shave shaven a haircut that she
refers to to her mother, uh is associated with two bits.
It's a seven note musical riff call and response rhythm
popularly used at the end of a musical performance. And
I listened to it. It goes something like this, and
you've heard it all before. It's like, dn''t dn't that's it, okay?

And there are different forms of that. So that's usually
for comedic effects, um, and it's used melodically and rhythmically,
for example, as a knock on the door, Um, and
here are the musical notes. And I don't know if
anybody can read music or but it's called shaven a
haircut two bits. It could be used as a duet

(02:54):
where one person uh calls and the two bits would
be the answer din't in and I that dent, Amy,
give me the answer. So I'm gonna call dent and
lent dent, dent and lent dent dent. I can kind
of read music, I know face, and I know every

(03:16):
boy does every boy? What was that one? Every Every
fine boy does good, every boy does shoot, every every
every good boy does fine. Thank you. Let's try this again,
shall we? Why? I bet you your guitars aren't tuned
very well? Every fine, good boy does well? Alright, one

more time, just for emphasis, d good excellent, not too shift.
Even after all that, why did they say this? You
just miss Scott? I know when I was here, I
was here, But I'm like, how how okay, let's move on,

I mean alright, So al right, so there's still there
were still on the scene, right, and they're still trying
to figure out to do with their Friday night, and
they find out that Richard and Emily are partying their
brains out over there, and that somebody is even dancing
with Emily, and Richard spies this guy feeling groping Emily

(04:34):
on the dance floor, and he gets off the phone
and says, hey, hey one, watch where your hands are gone?
You know this kind of thing. So, I mean, first
of all, how great an actor is ed Herman, for
I mean Jesus that he puts all the joy and
all the fun and everything. Lloyd, watch where your Lloyd?

(04:55):
Watch those hands, you know. But he just and especially
when he got off the phone with where he turns
around and he gets into the song and he starts
singing the song a little bit wonderful stuff. Love watching
that guy act um So Roy says, the Gilmore House
is partying like its N nine, obviously a reference to
the Prince songs written in two is fifth studio album

the same name. Uh. The song was to symbolize the
mockery of an arm a geddon and to party recklessly
before the year two thousand, which I guess is y
two k right. That never sort of, it's just kind
of fizzled out and puffed down he did he did?
I know that? Uh? Well? And also speaking of of

(05:36):
the Purple one as he's referred to, right, they call
him the Purple one. Uh. In two thousand and seventeen,
after his death, Pantone named a shade of purple after him.
It's called Love Symbol number two. You know what Pantone is, right,
and the different not know. Pantone is a company that
does all the shades of different colors. There's thousands of

thousands and thousands of different shades of green, blue, yellow, thing.
So when I was doing my coffee company colors, we
had to get it down to a certain Pantone. So
everybody goes how to print it? Um? So she also
and Laurel I reference and here at home with us,
it's like the seven hundred Clubs, right, that's been around.

(06:17):
I mean you know, uh seven hundred Clubs TV program
Christian Broadcasting Network. It aired each weekday in Situcation, United States,
was available worldwide on CBN dot Com. Laurel I is
referring to the seven club being boring. M Imagine that.
Imagine Laurel I saying something like that shocking. And here's

(06:39):
another fun fact, Pat was it Pat Robertson. He started
doing that when he was twenty eight years old, and
he did it until he was nine one. Yeah, no,
but it's I think it's still on and his son
took over. Oh really, I never see it anymore because

(06:59):
I used to like flip in channels and you would
stumble upon to the seven hundred Club. Yeah, they still
play it on the seven hundred Club on on Freedom
Network or something like free form free form. Right, yes,
wait a minute, now let's coming back to me like
late at night. Yeah, it's like feel like nine pm.
It's so annoying because I like, sometimes I wanted, like
a good movie on free form and it's just seven

I would say, I know. All right. So now Laurel
Eyes in the diner, she's in Luke's diner. She's with
her camera. She's doing all her little doop de doo
stuff with the with the with the analog device and
or the digital whatever. Uh and she says, oh, man,
you do not photograph. Well, first of all, I'm not
this isn't you know. I'm not trying to be arrogant

(07:46):
or anything. But if can you imagine Luke not photographing, Well,
I don't I don't get that forty miles of bad road,
stop it. You know. If you're gonna do that to
the butt, Okay, do it through the face too. Okay,
that's the face needs it. Thank you very much. You've
been getting Yeah, I've been getting any sleep, brother, because
that's forty miles of bad roads. And Lorel takes a

picture of Luke. She looks at it, and he looked
at it and was repelled by what everybody thought. It
was a horrible photo. We all acted the crap out
about what a terrible picture. It was. The whole thing anyway,
Forty miles of Bad Road came from a rock and
roll instrumental recorded by Dwyane Eddie. And I watched the video, uh,

(08:28):
and it was the weirdest video I've ever seen. It
was back in the fifties. Dick Clark was in his
early twenties. He presented Dwyane Eddie and this hit song.
I think it was like one of the first episodes
of American Bandstand. It could have been. But they were
on location in in Middle America and Dwyane Eddie and

(08:50):
his band came out out. They were outdoors on a
farm with all of these women in dresses with dark
hair on either side, and grants dance and they the
band was brought out in tractors and and Dwayne Eddie
was standing on top of a of the type of
attractor that cuts wheat, So he was standing on top

(09:12):
of the road at rotor blades and they were really big,
so if that thing accidentally turned on, he would have
been killed very quickly. The saxophone player came out in
the scooper of an earth mover and he was kind
of laying down and playing a sax solo. It was
really strange, um very funny, but anyway, so that the

(09:34):
story behind the name of the song in which the
title came from forty Miles Bad Road. Dwayne Eddie and
his producer Lee Hazelwood were waiting in line to buy
tickets at a movie theater. Now imagine standing there in
a movie theater. You over here two guys in front
of discussing a blind date that one of them had,
and the other one said, well, how the date go on?
His friend replied, while it was okay, but the girl

(09:56):
had a face that looked like forty miles of Bad Road,
And Dwyane and Lee looked at each other and they said, well,
that's the title of our next record. So that's where
it came. My reaction was a little early because I
snuck ahead and I saw it coming right harsh. Yeah,

(10:16):
and it's an instrumental there's no there are no lyrics
in the songs. So harsh that she said that to Luke. Yeah, right, bad,
But I think that's just part of her olds, you know,
rich just ribbing them right, just ribbing them. Um all right,
Now we move on to uh Lane practicing with her

(10:39):
band and trying to think of a band name. Remember
that scene, Um and Dave says, we have enough for
two half hour sets in terms of songs, right, because
I think they asked him if they had enough songs.
I think Jess asked him, do you guys have enough
songs or whatever? Um and and Dave says, but we
need a name, and Brian says, I made my suggested

(11:00):
and Zach says, yeah, we vetoed the Harry Potters next. Okay,
it's not a bad name, actually, the Harry Potters. I
don't hate it, it's not I think it's pretty clever,
but it does sort of limit what the perception could
be for the band. You just imagine them in cloaks, right, exactly,

(11:23):
you imagine them. They're all magicians. It's like the Harry
where the Harry Potters, It's like, well it's a little weird. Um, so,
of course this Harry Potter is a fictional series written
by J. K. Rowling. Seven books. Um, let's do some
fun facts. And all the scenes where Ron, Harry and
Hermione were doing homework, they were actually doing their homework.

(11:47):
I mean they were the leads, so they really were
in basically every scene, every scene. Does everybody here love
Harry Potter? Obsessed? Fantastic fantastic in how are you kidding Me?
Fell Free, how snoring? Like I read books, read all

(12:08):
the books. I waited in line, like remember when you
couldn't reserve seats and theaters back then, and we would
wait in line all day. Make sure me and my friends.
I guess I was just thinking of the opening that done.
I can't do it. But you know that tune when
a Harry Potter movie starts that it's just like your comfort.
It was just like, oh my god, I love I

love every movie, every movie. Yeah, they're they're classic films.
But she thought of the name Hogwarts while on a
flight and she wrote it down on an airsick back. Um,
and uh, let me see what else do we have here,
Professor Severus Severus Snape. Severus snap Snape was modeled on

(12:53):
a teacher called John Nettleship who taught j K chemistry
in school. The characters name was inspired by Severus Road
in South London, while his surname was taken from a
small Suffolk village. Now we're getting to some James Bond stuff.

(13:14):
So Rory, Uh, they leave Rory and just leave the
band practice in the garage. After they try to come
up with a name for the band. Um, Jess starts
going on about the prom and because he wants to
Rory wants to go with Lane and Dave, so it's
a double date for the prom. Rory says it means

(13:35):
a tux you know, I know it's geeky, and Jess
says tuxes are also James Bond, so that's not geekys.
Now we're gonna talk a little bit about a Bond. No, no, yeah,
bond makes them cool. They're not, They're they're freaking Some
taxes can be geeky, yes, they can be. Um. So
when that's the Bond series starting sixty two, the suit

(13:59):
was this standard uniform in the Western world for middle
class and upper class met the suit, suit and tie. Uh.
James Bond's cover has always been that of a businessman
who works for a London company called Universal Exports. UM
and just as referring to how cool James Bond makes

(14:20):
wearing a Tuck's look, there's been seven James Bond. Who
was your favorite? Guys, let's go, Tara, who's your favorite
James Bond? Have you seen all the films? Yeah? Pierce
Brosnan just he was pretty was the one I grew
up with. I didn't really even know about Sean Connery
till later, and I never really watched the Daniel Craigs.

(14:40):
I'm going Brosnan, I'm going I'm going Connery and Craig.
And I like me some Brosnan. Yeah, I do Liketon
was he one and done? He was one and done
like George Lason by so so yeah, so so I
like me some Daniel Craig. I'm not mad about the
idea of ad dress for Bond, by the way, just

(15:02):
saying I think he's about He's great. Yeah, he's absolutely great. Um. Anyway,
so they've been seven. I'm Sean Connery, David Niven. I
didn't know David Niven was a Bond. David Niven was
a boy. He must have done one and done George Lason, By,
Roger Moore, Timothy Dalton, Pierce Braws and Daniel Craig. Daniel

(15:23):
Craig's been doing it for a while. Yeah, he's done.
He said that was his last one. And you know
I'm flying flying all the time, right, So I'm getting
on airplanes all the time, and I've watched um uh
what is it, no time to die? Yeah? Yeah, every
time I get on on air Canada, they I watched
the film and they always land before forty minutes before

(15:44):
the end, and I'm like, it's happening to me three times.
I don't even know the end anyway. In Fleming got
the James Bond name from an author named James Bond
who wrote a book on bird watching called Birds of
the West Indies. So I totally got distracted when you

(16:05):
were talking about David Niven being born, because all I
could think about was the Streaker and I knew it.
I looked it up. It was David Niven was hosting
the oscars when that streak, Oh yeah, that must have
been in the seventies, when streaking is a thing. We did,
we all streak. I streaked. No, we've heard about yours.
But now we don't want to wait, let's not go

(16:26):
into that again, all right, So here we go and
we come to the infamous. But seen Luke is tinkering
all he's lying on the reference they made during this right, So,
so Suki was talking about accidentally touching Luke's hind quarters.
Uh shall we refer to them? Uh derriere um um.

(16:51):
He said it was an accident. Laurel I says, it's
getting very cinemax at night. And here Cinemax is a
cable network that launched in uh only laughing because it
can be really awkward if you have all the cable channels.
You're just scrolling and suddenly it's a it's wow, and

(17:16):
you're just like right right right. When I when I
went to look at my house that I eventually bought
in in two thousand and three, the guy was showing
me around the house and he and and he turned
on the TV and the in the Medea room and
there it was it was it was it was ten

(17:36):
o'clock in the morning, and he goes, I'm sorry about that. No,
I guess the owner likes to watch you know why,
don't know the TV showing you the house. I don't know.
He just he just did. He just did. Um. So,
to compete with other cable networks, Days decided to play
R rated movies during the daytime. So that's when the
decline of the Western civilization began, whereas HBO was only

(18:01):
playing R rated movies after eight PM. So they have
the moral high ground. HBO has the moral high ground.
Uh So, laurelized referring to cinemas content was inappropriate, which
was a funny line. That's my I'm still days and
I'm still not recovered because makes me laugh, and yet
I feel awful about it, and I'm so I'm so conflicted.

(18:27):
It's just a TV show, uh, just a goofy TV show.
Um all right. So now layalized telling Suki what it
was like running into Max at the Boosters meeting. Laurealizes, no,
I was trying to play it cool, and Suki says, well,
there you go. He was doing the same thing. You
were both James deaning it, trying to keep it professional.

(18:50):
Here's some fun facts about James Dean. Is everybody familiar
with James Dean on this panel? Everybody should know James.
He's the ultimate cool guy, Hollywood. I think that's probably debatable.
I think he's the ultimate rebel. Okay, right here for you,

(19:11):
But you gotta be east of Eden to do it.
But but he was, he was. He was too cool
to shower like Pitt. They said that about bread Pitt,
do they really? Yeah? They even acknowledge it when he
did Between two Ferns with Zach Alfin. I guess I

(19:33):
just I like him even now. No, I think that's great.
Everything about Pitte, everything, everything he can, he can do
no wrong Dean. James Dean supposedly didn't care much about
his public appearance. And I guess you can do that
when you look that way. Yeah, perfect, uh and went
in for the disheveled look um. At one formal lunch,

(19:56):
he showed up barefoot and in filthy genes a scandal,
and was known to appear at rehearsals in pants held
together with safety pins. So he was a punk, my lord.
He liked to practice magic tricks. He was a smoker
um who was often photograph of a cigarette dangling from
his mouth, which I mean, you know, thank god it

(20:19):
was from his mouth, because that could have been awkward
if it was from somewhere else. Dean put a magical
spin on his tobacco habit. Oh, here we go. He
would put an unlit cigarette and a flaming match into
his mouth and then pull out a burning cigarette. I've
actually seen that performed at parties. I've seen people do that. Um,

(20:39):
not from Valda Victorian's, but other types of people do.
All right. So now there's another scene, Laurelized telling Suki
about the meeting. It's the same scene Laurie's laurealized. Suki
suggests if Laurel I imagined kissing Max at her graduation
and this was funny, actually, Suki says, maybe it was
an a lusion. Laura says, no, it's not an illusion.

(21:02):
Doug Henning, we kissed, so he says, don't be so sure.
Something like this happened to me when I was like ten,
I was willing to leaf Garrett and I fantasized about
kissing him. No, I don't want to correct you, but
I think it's Leif Garrett. But people say it either way.
But I too had a crush on Leife Garrett. I'm sorry,
did you did you just stop me to correct me

(21:23):
about Leaf Garrett Life Garrett. I had a crush on
him when he was on Wonder Woman. He played twins
and they sang I'm gonna I'm gonna stick with Leaf
like all right uh, And I was tilling the leaf
Garrett that I fantasized about kissing him so much. At
some point I really thought it happened. Um, all right,

who's Doug Henning? Why did she refer to Doug Henning?
Because I thought it was a question. I thought it
was a game. He's a famous magician illusion He was
an illusionist in the seventies and early eighties, and he
was credited with reviving for Field before Copper right right,
And he paved the way for Dad, for David Blaine,

David Blaine, thank you Doug Henning for paving the way.
Um uh. And Leaf for Lafe Garrett, however you want
to say. Louf Garrett was a teen idol in the
nineteen seventies that starred in The Outsiders. Yeah, he did
not star in the Outsiders. He was in the Outsiders.
But he was really famous for that hair and he

sang um ah was made both dancing. So he so
he did a record the whole thing. Yeah, he was
very sort of like, uh the ultimate teen idol because
he had that hair. I remember him and the cover
of teen bat tight tight like leathery pants and did

(22:48):
that made thing to it black leather pants. Wow. So
during the filming of Outsiders, the boys caused quite a
bit of trouble in the hotel in which they were staying.
One particular instrument was the night they filmed the fountain
scene where Bob Lafe Garrett is attempting to drown pony

(23:11):
boys sing Thomas Howell. Later on, the six other boys
jokingly mocked this scene in the hotel's lobby fountain, playing
playfully trying to drown each other, hinting states the hotel
had the fountain removed within weeks. Okay, that's very extreme.
Um oh my god, that's and that's real power too.

(23:34):
I went to fountain remove or else all my cast
will die? Uh Lane in her band at the party,
deciding on space where to perform for the first time,
Zach says, because when I do my double jump, kick
off the amp and slashing wind Mills, I'm gonna need
more room Lane. Well, don't do that then, Dave, Yeah,

it sounds a little too Millie Vanilly zach Um did
Milli Vanilli jump off of amps? And when did Milli
Vanilli get busted? And that was that was like like
the late eighties, I think maybe early nineties, early nineties.
So Milli Vanilli was a German French r and b

Duro from Munich. The group was founded by Frank Ferian
and consisted of Fab More Van and Rob Pilatus. Got
right once again. They got busted in yeah, late eighties,
early nighties. Yeah, yeah, yeah, um and they were they
were famous for their lip sinking scandal and they were

performing in front of eight thousand people their debut hit
girl you know It's true. They started with it right,
m h m hm m hmmm, started with a lot
of it on the rain right right? Was there a lawsuit?
Was there a lawsuit? So they started off with a

lot of energy and dancing. When they got to the chorus,
the lyrics repeated endlessly throughout the venue. Girl you know
it's girl, you know it's girl, you know it's so
there you go. Does no one remember when that happened
to Ashley Simpson? Yeah, and I God, yes you're speaking
my language. I did that? End that? Did that? You

need to watch? And also Mariah Carey really no, it
was a couple of years back. Did it end? Did
it end Ashley Simpson's career? Did she ever recover? She would?
I would beg to argue she hasn't come out with

(25:50):
another album or I don't think she got canceled though,
just like embarrassing. And Mariah Carey was just yea, oh god.
Can you imagine what Mariah Carey did after that? After

Oh my goodness, it will give you a little It's
not funny, but it will give you a little laugh.
All right. So the duo's German producer and mastermind Frank Ferrrion,
outed both singers Polanis and Morvan that they hadn't sung
a note on the worldwide four million selling chart topping

(26:34):
girl You Know It's True album, which generated five top
five singles and three number one pop hits. After this
was found out, they had to give their best new
Artist Grammy back. Wow I believe Dave is referring to
Milli Vanilly then being seen as impostors and Zack too

(26:55):
could make a fool of himself. So again Dave saves
the day. The Mariah Carey one is worth a rewatch,
really really really good. So now it's the scene early

(27:15):
party Jess and Roy at the party. Jess is in
a bad mood because he got kicked out us high
school Rory, and he hasn't told Roy yet, and she's
trying to cheer him up. You know, she's being a
good girlfriend. Jess said, we're dork early. Um okay, that's
an expression. Royce is, come on, I need to steal that.

(27:35):
We're dork early, dorkerly, dork eerly. Uh. Roy says, come on,
getting the spirit of things. Hello Cleveland, Um okay. So
Hello Cleveland is a saying from the nine four rock
comedy film This Is Spinal Tap, where the band is
walking onto the stage and screaming and fist pumping Hello

(27:56):
Cleveland to get themselves excited. Rory is saying this in
a funny way to get just pumped up and excited.
By the way, you think it's you say Hello Cleveland.
But they were like in like Boston, all right, I
think that's I think that's the joke right By the way,

(28:16):
if people listening. If you have not seen, If you
haven't seen, this is spinal tap, please watch. It is hysterical.
Several rock stars have commented on one and uncannily accurate
spoof of the rock and heavy METI Metal world. This
film is spinal tap. I'm referring to YouTube. Guitarist The
Edge said, I didn't laugh, I wept. It was so

(28:38):
close to the truth. Um anyway, all right, So now
Jess fixes the keg at the party as he coolly does.
He tapped it Rory again, trying to cheer him up. Rory,
You and Springsteen the workingman's hero. And then you know,
this is when Jess is like ultimately cool and James
Deane when he just rolls his eyes. He rolled his

(29:00):
eyes at the guys and walks away, just to go Jess.
He just rolls his eye and I walked away. So
he was super cool in that moment. So Springsteen has
often been referred to as a working class hero, a
powerful figure giving voice to the powerless, as an icon
to blue collar America. Bruce uses his music in support
of poor and working class people to challenge the oppressive

(29:21):
systems that create such social injustices. Try telling that to
people trying to buy his tickets now for his Las
Vegas residency, which your thousands of dollars. I think you
can buy a seat there for forty thousan dollars. So
there's a little bit of an uproar there about that.
Um um um. Okay, So Brian feels like he's having

(29:42):
a panic attack before the first gig. I want to
say something I wanted to. Here's the sidebar, right, you
want a sidebar. How about the cat tower, the carpet
cat tower, and there's a cat on top of it,
but it's not alive. No, that's not that's that's that's
just a prop cat, right, go back and watch it.

(30:05):
It's just there's like this we instagram that looks like
a cat up there, but that's not a real cat. Yeah,
and that's in two different scenes. I think it was
in a Dave Dave Dave Lane scene and it was
also in a uh, what's his name, Dean Dean was
in that scene. Um so anyway, so Brian says, yeah,

you're just so Brian's having a panic attack. Dave says,
Brian is just nervous. Take a deep breath and use
your nailer. See Adam Brody, make makes that funny. It
was a great moment. Zach says, yeah, and don't forget
that the hair and figurenails on John Entwhistle's body, We're
still growing. When they brought in his replacement, which was

kind of morbid because you know, I was a huge
fan of John Entwhistle was the bass player for The Who,
and he died at the hard Rock Hotel I think
in Vegas before a performance, and they brought in another
anyway English musician who was a basis for the rock
band Who. His music career spanned four decades. He was
nicknamed the Ox and thunder Fingers nicknamed the Ox because

he was so strong. He was strong and silent, uh
and grounded member of The Who's act is referring to
when John died June to the band before the Who
We're supposed to go on tour. Then the band announced July,
uh vote two, they replaced him with Pino Palladino. I
wonder if that's any relationship to Dan Palladino, who had

(31:34):
played with Peter Townsend's solo albums the guitarist for The Who.
The replacement was three days after John's death. I mean
what are you gonna do? Right? You're going on tour
the guy. It's a tough tough call. Paris going on
about why she doesn't want the grad party on a yacht.
You know what I thought about that scene when Paris

(31:54):
was going something to do. No, I'd like to see No,
that's your Paris for you, that's Paris at Paris at
her best, right. But I thought maybe they could have
gotten a British actress to play the role first. Yeah,
for some reason, I hear a British accent. That's interesting. Yeah,

there's but I get it. But I mean, what if anyway,
anyway Paris forget the inconvenience of being at sea with
guests unable to leave. If the party is full is dull,
or if the band, which is is inevitably be composed
of accountants with semi mullets, decides to do a half
hour Kenny G tribute Funny Funny fun Facts, a burn

to Kenny G by Paris, who is making a point
