Speaker 1 (00:33):
Two interview Talis looking us up our friend Jackie Redman,
who is joining us from WrestleMania. I mean, when tell
us we're gonna get JACKI and I said, good luck.
She's usually WrestleMania. My old buddy Nick con Leaf, fitting
Joe Tessitoora. They're busy right now. No, Jackie made time
first incredible, even after Cem Punk gave her the death
clare of all death players on Saturday Night. So Jackie's
great talking about her journey within hockey of course, doing
a great job on TNT and her origin story coming

(00:55):
back from the score.

Speaker 2 (00:56):
And a big guest, Jason.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
It's your dad, Darryl de Murr's HABS insider joining us
for the first time.

Speaker 2 (01:02):
This has become a family affair.

Speaker 3 (01:05):
Coming in he did. He wanted to get in and uh,
we're gonna let him on. We're gonna we're gonna give
him a test test, run, a little taste test, and
uh see if he can pull off a little moose Booh.

Speaker 1 (01:15):
No, he killed it because I thought he was gonna
be more just like crazy, like you know, rabid inspired
Habs fan.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
But he was like he's a coach.

Speaker 1 (01:21):
I didn't realize that, Like he's yeah, he's a very
knowledgeable hockey fan.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Yeah, you know.

Speaker 3 (01:25):
I mean listen, every game I played growing up, I
called him afterwards, and even I mean he watched my
games and I was playing in San Jose's thing up
to like two in the morning. Yeah, and I'd call
him after every game and I'd get a little bit
of a uh a breakdown of what he did right
and what he did wrong. So and then I always
have my mom in the background being like, you did great,
played like shit, not your game. My dad would just

(01:46):
say you look tired kind of right, A little bit.

Speaker 4 (01:50):
Of that true.

Speaker 1 (01:52):
Today's Cinophile in sixty is a non to producer. Twel
He just directed a documentary with the Hartford Whaler.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
So I watched that. That's gonna be my cno file.

Speaker 1 (01:59):
Review This week Love the documentary I watched Why to
interview Toe but more Bully, I talk about my journeys
backron Amazon Prime that has been done now that has
ceased with the regular season over. You just came back
my friend from Portugal. Talk to me about Portugal.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
Portugal.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
Yeah, we went to Lisbond and we stayed in Aljs
for three four days. We went quickly for with my
dad for his birthday. It's his birthday, was.

Speaker 4 (02:23):
It yesterday's seventieth birthday? No? Sixty sixty four?

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Oh man, young man.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
Man, No, it's not a miletone young We just wanted
to go. We haven't really done a trip would just him,
me and my brother I think, you know, ever growing up,
and we did some little ones, you know, but nothing
overseas like that where it wasn't for me playing hockey like,
you know, because we did a trip in Switzerland and
all that when I was playing though, So this was
us just hanging out.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
It was great.

Speaker 3 (02:47):
I mean, I didn't expect to love Portugal as much
as I did. The food was absolutely incredible and funny enough.
There's a guy that lives there who my dad coached
growing up, who was my brother's age, so he was,
and he loved my dad as a coach so much
so he took a three hour train when he found
out we were in town. No, he did it and
came and took us around the city for two days.

(03:07):
So we like got went to all these like cool
little niche restaurants and high in spots. We went to Cappadoca,
the most western part of Europe. Beautiful country, beautiful city,
was amazing. Drank a lot of white wine and what
else did we drink? We drink all that we had
drink a lot, so it's good. But it was an
amazing city, amazing time. Loved it and made it back

(03:30):
in time for a New Jersey wedding, Not a New
Jersey wedding, a Bronx wedding. Last night, Wow landed and
went right to a Bronx wedding on the tits.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
Well, eventually, hopefully I get out there just to see that.
In the meantime, Loan enjoy some hockey love with everybody else.
So we early impressions the Avalanche and the Stars, you
and I have said, you know, at least on paper,
it feels like it's gonna be the best series. The
opening round, Mackenzie Blackwood coming in the thought was going
to be hey first playoff action of his career. Would
he be able to quit himself? He stops twenty three
of twenty first shots. He looked excellent. For the Avalanche,
McKinnon has always was great, had a three point game.

(04:00):
And for the Stars, they've now lost game one each
of the last eight playoff series going back to twenty
twenty two, so in auspicious sign for them. But the Avalanche,
they did as advertised, took care of business against the Stars.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
This is Mackenzie Blackwood's coming out party. This is his
Olympics audition. We will see him as most likely either
the one or two on Team Can in the Olympics
because of what people are gonna finally see and get
to realize. I mean, none the saves he made last game,
Like listen, Colorado twenty four shots, but they give up

(04:32):
Grade eight chances because they're so fast, so fast and
high octane on the transition that they will give up
stuff because they always throw d into the rush and everything.
They'll they'll sell the farm to get a scoring chance.
And I mean he made a save on Mason marchmant
off his hip that was I mean, he scored the
Marchman scores that goal, and it's a different game. I
think it was two to one at that time, and

(04:53):
then they went and scored that dagger. Devon Tave's up
a beautiful pass by Josh Manson. That pass was unbelievable
by the way, Yeah it was a great But what
scares me right now big time is here's the thing
with Dallas. They've now lost eight in a row. Miko
Ranton is nowhere to be seen. Uh, mira Hei skin
In hopefully can come back.

Speaker 2 (05:15):
Most critical piece. If you can get him back, it's
a different.

Speaker 3 (05:17):
He seems like he's skating. I think he's going to
be back. If they don't get him back, I mean,
I think if he's not back in game two, they'll
be two in the hole. And then it's tough. You're
going to You're going to ball Arena. That Colorado building
is no joke. It's it's gonna be tough to win
in that building. And I think Gave Landeskog will probably
they'll probably play him game three if he gets in

(05:37):
the lineup. That's what I think they do. They play
him at home in game three. I think it's the
best place to play him, but it was a great
I I you cannot if you're watching that. You know
in hockey, you tell people go watch a hockey game.
It's really fast in person and on TV doesn't do
a justice the Colorado Avalanche on TV or as fast
as in person. It is incredible to watch. They are

(05:59):
so fast, They're so quick up ice, the way they
move the puck, they move in sync, it's it's.

Speaker 4 (06:04):
A sight to see.

Speaker 3 (06:05):
So this team fully loaded with Mackenzie Blackwood. I mean,
this was my picks at the start of the playoffs
to win the Cup. And they looked at and know
no one more than McKinnon, who is a fucking beast.

Speaker 4 (06:19):
Last night he.

Speaker 1 (06:19):
Looked right out there, as I said, three point outing.
And generally, if I don't have a dog in the race,
I just want as much hockey as possible. So I
hope Dallas bounces back in game two makes it more
of a serious because you're right, if Colorado goes up
towo oh, they're not gonna relink with that lead.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
Now.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
A very exciting Game one was Blues Jets because the
Jets getting braidlat with respect going in no gavel already
no Nikolai Eelers and the Blues dragging them into the fight.
This is a tight game for much of it. Connor
Hellibuck looked leaky. Three goals in seventeen shots. This is
playoff Helly again, he might win a heart trophy, but Buddy,
you better step up in the second season. Kyle Connor
gets the game winner ninety six seconds left. Felt like

(06:51):
a huge relief JD for the Jets to get this win.
Otherwise it could have been a real problem losing that
game at home.

Speaker 3 (06:56):
Yeah, I think they would if they'd have lost that game,
and you could you could see the ernest effort by
the Blues. Everything was shooting high with traffic on hell
He gets deep in his net, he's back, he gets
a little bit two square, and he doesn't look for
the puck, and he did not look good early. But again,
I think this was more what we didn't see last
year versus this year, is they didn't really have the

(07:18):
team to hold on and hold into a team structure
to kind of bail him out a little bit, bail
out Hellibuck, and I thought they did that game. I mean,
the third period was one of the best periods I've
seen played by a team, and the Jets specifically, this
was their calling card all year. They didn't give up anything,
what two to four shots, They didn't give anything up
to Saint Louis, and they absolutely dominated him. Kyle Connor

(07:41):
specifically was was unbelievable. So I was a little worried
with Nikolai Eilers being out, and you know, I didn't
think I was in Gay Velardi as well. I was
a little nervous, and rightfully so. But listen, Hellibuck made
that save on Jordan Cayrou, which was probably it was
three to two Saint Louis and it was gonna be

(08:02):
probably game over there, and he makes that say so,
he made the same when it counted and he settled in.
But I think from here on out it's probably gonna
be Winnipeg most likely, They're gonna kind of be in
the driver's seat, and they just needed that win big time,
big time.

Speaker 2 (08:15):
Yeah, I'm with you.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
You would think that all of a sudden, they go
that kind of gives him a push right now, that
kind of give him a little bit.

Speaker 2 (08:19):
That's a relief.

Speaker 3 (08:20):
Yeah, that's the that's the deep sigh, that's like the
woo Like Okay, here we go and like we can relax.
I bet you, I bet you. Connor, Hellybuck is a
great game. Come game too. I think he's gonna be
really good.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
That's where you say to yourself, okay, like all of
a sudden, if he feels pretty good, then then, as
you said, it's relief and you don't play your best
but still.

Speaker 2 (08:39):
Get the victory and from there you start to feel
a bit better.

Speaker 1 (08:41):
Obviously, a great scene of Winnipeg, by the way, I
mean this, We're gonna be talk without these playff atmospheres
are unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
I mean the white out there Winnipeg. And I liked
your play.

Speaker 1 (08:47):
But deep in the net I was watching He's not
quite Don Granado, but Tony Garnado was an NHL network
today and Tony kept saying, deep in his net that
was the problem with hell about you nailed it?

Speaker 3 (08:56):
Not confident and was I breaking down there Kyle Connor goal,
there's set face off play by the.

Speaker 2 (09:01):
Winter go ahead, do that's right, jdp I loved it, but.

Speaker 3 (09:03):
They I just thought it was a great and it's funny.
I wanted to break it down little jdpov, But they
run this face off play where they send Mark Shiffley.
They only do it on the right side with Schifley's
line and when Josh Morrissey's on the ice. They did
it twice in the second period. We're off the draw,
they'll win it to the right side, so Scheiffer be
in his backhand and he'll win it to usually I

(09:25):
think Morrisey's with Peank, so.

Speaker 4 (09:27):
He'll win it to Peank.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
And then they go dd D quick and Shiffley just
sprints behind the net and comes out as fast as
he can and he comes so he just tries to
get lost and then Morrissey will find him basically a
low to high to low sorry, and then he either
looks for a one time or to Josh Morrissey or
which he tried and it didn't work. But then on
the second time they ran it, which was the game

(09:50):
tying goal. Was basically Schiffley took it. They kind of
took Morrissey away and he just hit the hole and
he saw Kyle Connor got lost in coverage. It's just
a beautifully set face off. I'm a huge fan of
set face offs, and that's kind of the game within
the game during playoffs, so obviously Saint Louis is going
to adjust to that. So now it's like, how do
they adjust and how does win? How does Winnipeg stay

(10:11):
one step ahead? But it's just an amazing set play
that they ran twice and ends up with a huge
goal for Kyle Connor there, but yeah, Connor.

Speaker 4 (10:20):
That's JD's POV.

Speaker 2 (10:22):
Bitches love it. Check it out once again on social media, telefriend.
It's all good stuff when it comes to jdpov.

Speaker 1 (10:27):
In our previous episode, we provided a preview of Kings, Oilers,
Devil's Hurricanes, Stars, Avalanche, Lightning, Panthers, and Senators May Beliefs.
If you want to revisit our take on those series,
check out that last episode that leaves us with three
series left to previews. So Jets and Blues, it doesn't
feel like a one versus eight, like, you know, the
Jets win the President Trophy at the Blues, we're so
good down the Strets. Jets did take three or four
against Saint Louis this year. Saint Louis had that great

(10:49):
twelve game winning stream. We kind of talked about it
in depth here right now, but it feels like with
Winnipeg winning that first game, you know, Jets are missing
a couple of key pieces I mentioned in Vallardian Eelers
Blues or mid out, Dylan Holloway should be stuggery pretty good.

Speaker 2 (11:00):
But now you get that game one feels like Jets
and six.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Yeah, like they'll get some games in. You never know
what's gonna happen in game two. It that's that's a
big pivotal game. And but that Areno was rocking, and
man does Winnipeg show out the fans the original white out.
It's it's cool to see and listen. You know, Saint
Louis is missing a big piece in Dylan Holloway. I
think it's a different series if Holloway's in. Uh, he's
a catalyst for that team. So it's I'm anxious to

(11:26):
see kind of what happens in how this plays out,
but I can't. This is Winnipeg's chance.

Speaker 4 (11:31):
They don't win.

Speaker 3 (11:32):
It's everything's getting blown up. But I think they seem
more common understanding of what they need to do and
how they need to play. And to your point, Saint
Louis was dirty, they were cheap, they were running him,
and I think it was one of those moments where
last year Winnipeg might have taken their foot off the gas,
but now they brought there's a reason they brought in,
you know, Luke, Shan, Brandon tannef guys like that to
kind of mitigate that and kind of drag the guys

(11:54):
into the fight. And I think they did just that.
It was a dirty game. It was a great hockey
game to watch if you're a hockey fan. It just
was constant after the whistle, Shenanigans and tom foolery and
ballyhoo and a lot of face washes oh so much,
and just I just think it was a good tone
setter and Winnipeg didn't back down, which is huge.

Speaker 1 (12:12):
And Tal just pointed as well in our group chat
Luke Shen knocking guys in the rastles all night, the
human eraserse.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
He was known for years one of the great hitters
of all time.

Speaker 3 (12:19):
Humana Raith Luke Shen loves to eat. Luke Schen loves
to eat, cross him on the pod.

Speaker 1 (12:25):
And we have absolutely he's a good buddy a Thomas
Sickies as well. Golden Knight's Wild. Vegas won all three
matchups against the Wild this season, including a five and
win in Minnesota. March twenty fifth. Minnesota's healthy again. They
got Corolla Priest off back, Joel Erickson ech back, both
playing well. But Vegas has been a Legit Cup contender
all season long. I like the Wild stand a chance
against like Vegas is too good. I call Vegas in

(12:46):
five just for fun, and we keep saying six, I'll
say Vegas in five.

Speaker 2 (12:48):
What do you got?

Speaker 4 (12:50):
I have Vegas winning.

Speaker 3 (12:51):
But if there was an upset, I kind of talked
about it the last couple of months, was Minnesota wild
if they would have got the Jets. I think it
was a possibility. But man, no one's really talked about
Vegas much this year and they've just had a ho
hum season again. They win the Pacific, they're healthy now,
and it's a team that's kind of battle tested. So

(13:12):
I think Minnesota is gonna make it a lot harder
than people think you do.

Speaker 2 (13:15):
But coming back obviously it's huge.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
One hundred percent.

Speaker 3 (13:19):
But I think Vegas has the best path to the
finals is definitely them. I have Colorado winning because they
just think they're so good. But I think Vegas has
the best path because you know, I think that you know,
La is really good, and I think they're probably gonna
beat the Oilers, but either way, I think wover comes
out of that probably won't get past uh Vegas. And
but again, listen, they have Zeeve William coming in. I

(13:41):
know a lot of people are like, oh, Kenny young
kid really impact the game as much as all over them.
I think he's going to be like a Kyle mccarr asked,
not that he's Cale mc, but he's going to have
an impact like Cale did when he came into the playoffs.
Like I don't think he's Cale mccarr. I think he's
a great defenseman. Uh and he's I think people are
gonna be really surprised. And they already have a really
stout decoor you know they got when they're healthy. They

(14:03):
got Spurge and Roadine favor a little small, but then
ze Bullyam you had him with Faber. It's a great,
great top four, you know. So I just think it's good.
And then you can have you know, the Jake Middleton's
and the and the Merrills and the and the bogot
You can have those guys the Bogosians down there and
can run around and be physical. So I just you know,
I think it's a team that is gonna give all

(14:26):
that Vegas can handle, but I think Vegas will handle him.

Speaker 1 (14:28):
Zee buoyam. Now on the all name team, that's only
top of the fact you include a Vern Fidler. You
had a Vern Fiddler reference racing on an episode that
was in talking about Ray Shiro Fiddler on the roof.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
All time great name.

Speaker 4 (14:40):
There on the roof.

Speaker 2 (14:43):
So it gets to the halves of the Capitals.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Listen, I'd love to you, know ingratiate myself further to
the great people of Montreal and call Ahabs.

Speaker 2 (14:49):
Wait first plaif appearance is twenty twenty one, but I
just don't see it now.

Speaker 1 (14:53):
I mean the Caps are without starting goaltender Logan Thompson protest,
is it a great year? Is not in the lineup,
So maybe Montreal has what it takes. But you just
said in the previous episode, and watching what we all
kind of limp towards the finish line, you go, hey,
they'll but they're not gonna be able to make any magic.
So I think you're skeptical they can actually pull off
a series.

Speaker 3 (15:09):
I have Caps in like five. I think they I
think the Bell I think the Bell Center gets them
a win. I definitely think that, but I think everybody
I think and listen, Marty Sanluis been there, done that.
So they have a good coach to kind of get
their minds reset. But this was one of those things
where no one really expected them to to make the playoffs.
They had this magical run near the end after four

(15:30):
nations to kind of give them that push. But they're
still like a minus twenty goal Differentially, they're they're really
bad defensively. They take a lot of penalties. If their
penalty penalty kill can hold up and Samuel Montinbau can
steal a couple of games. But you know, the only
thing that worries me with Capitals is their goaltending and
can they can those goalies find their form that they

(15:51):
had at the start of the season when they're on
that run and I you know, it's going.

Speaker 4 (15:54):
To be interesting to see. Time will tell.

Speaker 3 (15:55):
But you know Montreal has that youthful exuberance as we
call it, that they just don't care. They're just going
to go out and play and say, you know, fit.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
And young, dumb full of combs that were trying to
tell that's it.

Speaker 4 (16:09):
Yes, there he goes, don't you dare cut that tell. Yeah.

Speaker 3 (16:14):
But I think Washington, I think they're big physical. I
think they're they're gonna impose the yeah, well, this will
be stunned. I just think they're I think their coaching
staff is too smart too. I think they have a
they have a smart Kirk Muller's there, he knows, he understands,
he's who was with these Canadians guys. I think they're
gonna match up very well. And I think it's it's

(16:37):
just a game where it'll be. It'll be a fun
series to watch. I think it'll be high scoring and
some drama filled moments. But if Washington can say out
of the out of the penalty box, I think Montreal
will be in trouble.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
Well by special request, who cares what me and Jason
de Murse think about the Habs and the Capitals. I
wanted a diehard Montreal Canadiens fan. I got who's been
living and dying with us, who's been texting his son?
How about the habs brings right now? The passions be
coming through this podcast. Daryl, Jason's father joining us to
stock cabs. There's no better hockey city than Montreal. There's

(17:10):
no better feeling than Montreal's in the playoffs, breaking this
four year run.

Speaker 2 (17:13):
Daryl, it's great to see you. Congratulations. How are you feeling.

Speaker 5 (17:17):
I'm so excited. I got tourista last night.

Speaker 2 (17:23):
Right out of the gate.

Speaker 4 (17:24):
Got the shits.

Speaker 5 (17:26):
Oh wow, we can use those words online.

Speaker 4 (17:28):
That's great. Yeah, I love it.

Speaker 5 (17:31):
I'm fired up, excited.

Speaker 6 (17:32):
Uh, it's it's like I think I told Jason over
the last couple of months, since he's not playing, I
don't really.

Speaker 5 (17:40):
Watch much hockey, but I'm a huge Diingard Habs fan.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
What is that vib like for those who explain what
it's like his house from Montreal? Obviously Jason as well.
But if somebody doesn't know it, I know it's announce there.
You know, I grew up in Kingston, but like being
in Montreal, what's that passionate like for someone who hasn't
experienced it.

Speaker 5 (17:56):
I don't think it's anything like anybody's ever seen before.

Speaker 6 (17:59):
I was just driving down having breakfast with my with
my wife this morning, and you see lags out of cars,
I mean Canadian flies out of cars. Haven't haven't seen
that in maybe ten years. People in this town are
super excited about the the.

Speaker 5 (18:19):
Habs in their season they had.

Speaker 6 (18:21):
I think the fact that they just added Demidoff a
week ago, the fact he didn't play much in the
second game, only about nine and a half ten minutes.

Speaker 5 (18:31):
Now they're all saying the only reason he played nine
and a half.

Speaker 6 (18:34):
Ten minutes, all the conspiracy theorists, it's the fact that
they're going to play him a ton in the first
two games. I this morning in practice, he was on
the first power play line with Cawfield.

Speaker 5 (18:49):
Oh yeah, oh yeah.

Speaker 6 (18:51):
So you know, there was a lot of people, a
lot of my friends asked me, why did he play
much in that second game?

Speaker 5 (18:56):
And I didn't even know. I thought, okay, coach, he's
got to earn his steps.

Speaker 6 (19:01):
I don't think it's that. I think they're going to
play him a lot tomorrow night, a lot more. And
people think, and I think.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
You got what do you got, Pops? What do you
got Montreal's chances against Washington? How do you think this
series plays out?

Speaker 2 (19:14):
Well?

Speaker 6 (19:15):
I think the first game is going to be important,
That first five minutes is going to be important. The
fact they're not playing here, uh, it gets I'm a
little concerned about that. I think if we would have
started at in the Bell Provence. Well, I think it
would have been tough for Washington come out and match
that fan energy. So and and as Jason would say,

(19:38):
playing in Washington, it's kind of a weird rink. Even
watching on TV, the lighting is weird, it seemed. I
don't know what it's like live. I've never seen a
game there, but it just looks dull, just a tad
dell for me. So I think if we, if somehow
we can put them asleep and sneak in game one,
I think we win this in six.

Speaker 3 (20:00):
I think, wow, talk in the Caps rink unbelievable.

Speaker 6 (20:05):
I do really. I just think that they were super tired.
I was nervous the last four games of the year,
being out shot, absolutely annihilated on the shot clock. I
just think the kids got tired, just really tired. Hudson
was tired. But I saw I was watching uh stippets
of the practice this morning, and I'm telling you, they

(20:28):
were flying. And if Silkowski decides he wants to play
tomorrow night, he wants to bang some guys around. My
concern with Jane and I talked about it last week.
It's the Wilson factor. It's the Vshkan factor. If they
if they're banging tomorrow night on that d, I think
we're in trouble.

Speaker 2 (20:46):
When's the last week were this excited about a rookie
in latee Hudson.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
Man, I'm telling you, I don't even it.

Speaker 4 (20:52):
Was the last time that yeah, because.

Speaker 6 (20:55):
Yeah, I was gonna say Steffan. I think Stefan riche
was probably I couldn't believe it, like when he was
playing and how hard that shot was and Hudson. But
then I watched, you know, Demodoff. I couldn't believe his start,
his first three shifts. He was doing stuff in practice
this morning, like watching some of the plays. He goes

(21:18):
around defensemen like they're nothing. Now it's practice, doesn't mean anything.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
But still your son buried him for his lack of backchecking.

Speaker 4 (21:26):
Well that third goal on that Yeah, he's right, No,
he's right, he's right.

Speaker 6 (21:30):
But I think when you're superstar level. I've set the
jay a million times. There's two NHLs. There's the A
Division and the B Division, So A players can pretty
much get away with anything. B players can't. And I
think Demodoff is an A player that was bad what
he did, But you got to take. He's coming back

(21:51):
on jet lag.

Speaker 5 (21:53):
I heard his.

Speaker 6 (21:55):
You know how long it took him to get back.
It took him two days of flying from Turkey. So
I don't know, I can't wait. I'm fired up.

Speaker 5 (22:05):
I'm so fired up. I don't know what else to say.

Speaker 6 (22:08):
Like I said, I got tourista yesterday, and I think
it was all due to the Canadians.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
Well, honestly, Darryl, I love the fact you're so passionate.

Speaker 1 (22:15):
I did not realize you were so involved in Jason's
career as a coach, so clearly you o kudos from
anybody who's a fan of Jason Burs not only forty
he did as a player, but as a person. Obviously
loved the fact you're listening to pod and most importantly,
go Habs Go. Thank you for the time. We'll have
you back again with the Habs upset the capitals.

Speaker 5 (22:29):
In six beautiful. Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (22:32):
All right, keep it eye with my cousin San Lazarre
as well. It's Darld Demers. Lots of more coming up
here in NHL and scripted after this. Our next guest, celebrator, broadcaster,

(22:52):
and reporter who has covered the NHL from every angle.
She can currently be seen on TNT covering the NHL.
She is also front and center covering WWE and coming
to us from WrestleMania. Of course, she's a dear friend
of me and Jay's from her time at H Network,
and I dearly miss the fact. Nothing better than being
at the gym pretending to work out while gossiping with
my friend Jackie Redmand who joins us now.

Speaker 2 (23:11):
Jackie, it is great to see you and prove of
what a good person you are.

Speaker 1 (23:14):
You're joining us in the midst of the day wrestlingia
the biggest sports medical world.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
That you're giving us twenty minutes. You're amazing.

Speaker 7 (23:19):
You know why, because I got nothing but love for
you guys, and I love that. I love the intro
because not a not a second of that was fabricated.
Like if I was working out at the NHL Network
gym and I saw a v stroll in, I just
start taking the pods out now because we're having a
forty five minute conversation, like forget the pump, it's over,
it's no longer happening. We are gonna shoot the shit,

(23:42):
as they say, and share some tea with each other.

Speaker 1 (23:47):
The best would be like you'd like one more thing
that I gotta pump some iroy and then the one
five more things?

Speaker 2 (23:51):
Were you?

Speaker 4 (23:52):
Now?

Speaker 8 (23:52):
For shoot?

Speaker 5 (23:53):
Were you?

Speaker 4 (23:53):
It was adding in a suit when he was going there?

Speaker 7 (23:56):
Never never, it was casual admin, casual admin.

Speaker 1 (24:00):
Uh, listen, we're gonna get to hockey if I want to
start with wrestling because we're talking about listen, see him Punk, unbelievable.

Speaker 2 (24:06):
I watched the video that wtweeted out.

Speaker 1 (24:08):
I mean it is tough, Jack when a situation like that,
God bless you. You just you went there, but you
looked at me borderline betterfied asking what happened?

Speaker 7 (24:17):
Well, you know what, you know what it is is
and you know this av like c M. Punk is
such a huge hockey fan, and I've known him for years,
years before I worked for WWE through hockey because he's
such a legitimate fan of the sport, and so I
knew when he was coming out of gorilla as we
call it in this world, I'm like, this guy is
going to be so dejected from what has happened, Like

(24:40):
he is, I knew what this night meant to him
to finally main event Mania. But of course, because I
have such a great friendship with him. They were like,
you have to be the one to go ask him, like,
if he's going to stop for for someone, No, big dal,
I am sort of punk. My entires right here. But
if he's going to stop for someone, it's going to
be you. And he did stop. But anyone that's been
around Punk, No, he's never short of words. Like the

(25:01):
man loves to talk and say what he thinks. And
he just had nothing to say. And I just in
that moment, I'm just looking in Phil's eyes and I'm
just like he this man is lost for words right now.
It was. I haven't watched it back to see what
I look like, but apparently I look like a deer
in headlights. Just I'm not sure what was gonna happen,

(25:22):
But yeah, I still can't believe that he was betrayed
to the level that he was. I mean, you can
never trust anyone in this business, and certainly not Paul
Hayman of.

Speaker 4 (25:33):
All people the Double.

Speaker 7 (25:36):
Cross, but like the Double Cross, and to end up
standing next to a man in seth Rawlins, who has
been more vocal than anyone since Sampunk returned about his
displeasure him and Drew McIntyre probably the top two. To
be betrayed is one thing to be betrayed and then
watch that person join forces with your arch nemesis.

Speaker 9 (26:00):
Even worse, even worse, Oh my god, it would be
like it would be like Sidney Crosby leaving the Penguins
and playing for the effing Capitals, Like the Pensmans would
just be.

Speaker 7 (26:13):
Like, what are we doing? You can't go there?

Speaker 4 (26:18):
Can't.

Speaker 3 (26:19):
I mean, how how was it backstage after you? I
know you talked about cmpunk, but like, just how was
everybody the vibes and even going in today? Because that
was just cataclysmic what Paul Hayman did last night.

Speaker 7 (26:32):
I mean it was a lot of people were similar
to Punk in the sense that they just it was
just jaws on the floor. Can't believe what we just witnessed?
And what does it mean?

Speaker 2 (26:42):
Right?

Speaker 7 (26:43):
Like, I think everyone is wondering what this means? A
Seth rawlins Paul Haman alliance? Where does that go? What
is that? It is disgusting. I was just starting to
like Seth. Me and Seth had some good banter, and
now I'm like, oh, now now I don't like you
anymore because you're not a good human.

Speaker 1 (27:04):
How about the Hall of Fame ceremony yesterday started in
like one Eastern and at like two am Pacific.

Speaker 7 (27:10):
The Hall of Fame Ceremony. I learned in my rookie
year here that you can't speaking of trust, you can't
trust what anyone says about the run time of the
Hall of Fame ceremony because you gotta take me over,
like we're going over. It's just a matter of how
over are we going? Yeah, I'm not gonna lie. I
did the Red Carpet Show, and I probably shouldn't admit this,

(27:33):
but I will because who cares. I watched the ceremony
from the hotel I wastel Listen, Love, I Love, love you,
Hunter Love everybody to got inducted a huge honor. I
don't think my presence was missed. And I had a
big show. I had a big show the next day,
so I was like, I gotta get my z's you
know the same thing. No, Byron, Byron. Byron's a good

(27:58):
company man, he says, for the whole thing. He's a
good company man. And I, on the other hand, you know,
every once in a while, I make the selfish choice.

Speaker 4 (28:09):
It's the smart, the smart Jackie.

Speaker 3 (28:13):
I want to ask you like you've been doing you know,
live TV for a long time now, and you know,
things happen, like you just mentioned off script things, things
that you have to adapt to on the fly. Do
you have any moment that stands out where something was
so unpredictable that you just kind of were so stunned
but had to adapt.

Speaker 7 (28:31):
I would say one of the more shocking ones. And
there's there's a section of the of the WWE fans
that won't even believe this, but it's the truth. And
it was the WrestleMania kickoff show. A couple of years ago.
We did a big event, in a big press event
in Las Vegas, and it was it was the one
where Rock came out and had the whole bloodline tree

(28:52):
and Cody was there and the infamous slap that happened
on stage, all that goodness.

Speaker 4 (28:57):
And.

Speaker 7 (28:59):
I halfway through the show, I'm told, hey, we want
you to interview Triple H at the end of this event,
just about what's happened at the event, and if anything
happens at the end, just his reaction. But that's it.
It's just gonna be a very straightforward, you know button
on the evening and then of course, the slap happens,
and now I know, okay, well there's something juicy to
talk about. But still it's just gonna be you and

(29:22):
Hunter backstage. And so when the Rock rolls up and
starts dropping f bombs, yelling at Triple H two guys
who in the attitude era, like like preteen Jackie is
like watching them in feuds and stuff, and I'm like,
are we are we running it back right now? Like
are troopleated? And the Rock about to throw down and

(29:43):
the Rock is swearing and we're on live television, Like
my like truly jaw like hit the floor. I was
just like you said the bad word on the TV,
like what is happening? Like? That was a truly unexpected
one And adapting that moment, I mean, I don't know
if I adapted well. I just held the mic out
and tried to capture whatever was happening. I didn't say anything,

(30:05):
you know, like Roman showed up next, and I just
kind of tried to make sure I captured the moment.
But that was certainly one. I'm trying to think of
a hockey one that's happened to me.

Speaker 2 (30:16):
Well that deals with hockey.

Speaker 1 (30:18):
I was gonna say you know, you do such a
great job on Turner and being with an exact no,
it's absolutely true. And I was talking to Andy Bachillo
about this, and Andy knows, like when you're a reporter
in the game, it is very challenging. You only get
a few hits per game. You're bugging the producer trying
to jump in. Maybe there's two in the booth, maybe
there's a ring CT reporter as well, Like.

Speaker 2 (30:33):
It's very hard to get.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
Yeah, but I find it's always, you know, critically, you go, okay,
maybe I can get three or four hits and let
me give you some information, something that's interesting, something I
got from morning Skate, and then of course the interviews
of the coaches, which.

Speaker 2 (30:42):
Leads me to this.

Speaker 1 (30:43):
Having done last year, you do start to develop a
rapport with certain coaches.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
And I find you the same as me.

Speaker 1 (30:48):
I know you're Leaves fan, but you end up rooting
for people rather than teams R because.

Speaker 7 (30:52):
You hate totally.

Speaker 1 (30:52):
To me, that's a great story, et cetera. So with
that being said, I found this show. I mean rooting
for the Flames. I like Ryan Huska so much, or
I root for the LEAs because Craig Ruby was good.
Who is the coach that you were particularly fond of?
And if you want to answer it, a coach that
was a little great Popovich.

Speaker 7 (31:05):
Ask, okay, so I'll start with the first one. And
he has since won a Cup. But you know I
covered the Panthers on their first run to the Cup final,
and you know, Paul Maurice was so good to me,
like an absolute pleasure, gave me so much time, not
just like what people don't understand, and to part of

(31:26):
what you were talking about, Adnan, is the prep work
for everyone on a broadcast, but for us, you know,
ringside reporter. I put together like fifteen twenty ideas before
the game, knowing that I might get one or two
in and then if the game completely dictates something else,
I'm trying to think of stuff during the game that
I can do, right, I'm like scouring the internet looking

(31:47):
at stats, you know, figuring out what I can pitch.
And so the meetings that we have with the coaches
on game days are so crucial to what I do.
Like if I have a nugget or a stat on
a line or a player, if I can get some
insight from the coach on that very thing, or the
power play or whatever. It makes what I'm saying more
credible the point that I'm trying to make in the report.

(32:08):
And Paul Maurice, you know, his son has been involved
in the media a little bit, and I think because
of that, he has a newfound respect for what we do.
You know, he told me multiple times during that run,
anything you need, let me know, any question you have, like,
because you know how it is like the media scrumbs there,
you got all the big wigs are there, and like,
you know, I feel like I'm just I'm just a

(32:30):
ringside reporter. I'm relatively new at this particular thing. Like
I'm not asking the first question, and sometimes there's twenty
questions asked, and I'm like, oh, it's okay, Like if
you don't have time, like I'll hit your next game.
And he really made an effort to be like, no,
what do you need. I know I've already been talking
to the media for twenty minutes, but like, whatever you need,
like let me help you out, like you know. And

(32:51):
and so I have a huge amount of respect for
Paul just in his you know, things that he has
done for me in the time that he's made and
so when he won the Cup. I was very very
happy for him. I shot him a text thanked him
for everything, and he once told me, you know, he
remembers being a brand new coach in the league and
not always being given time by people or taken seriously,

(33:12):
and so he really makes an effort to make sure
people feel like they can do their job. And so
that's one person that I really really wanted to see
when and he did, and so I'm so I'm forever
happy for him. Plus he's just fun. I mean the
number of like one liners this guy will give you
mid game too, and you're just like it's the middle
of the game and you're like joking around. I got

(33:33):
a playoff game, no less. So he's great. And then
the other one, like no one's ever been like rude
or like or anything like that. But there's a couple
people where I'm a little bit more nervous, Like I
don't know what it is about Dean Ebison, but like

(33:56):
the first time, the first time I had to do
like an on the bench interview with him, and we
didn't hadn't really crossed paths that much, we didn't know
each other that well.

Speaker 4 (34:05):
Like I was.

Speaker 7 (34:06):
Legitimately shaken in my boot. So I was like, don't
ask something stupid. Redmand like, don't let this guy bury
you on team. I was so afraid. And it went fine,
but and he was he was totally fine, but I
remember being very intimidated by him.

Speaker 4 (34:22):
Is there ah?

Speaker 3 (34:23):
You know you tak Paul Maurice is probably your best
coach interview, but do you have a player in the
league right now? That's like, I know Seth Jarvis is
the talk of the town in terms of handed answers,
but anybody that sticks out to you, You're like, Okay,
this is gonna be a good interview. I'm kind of
in the clear and not having to, you know, pull
through some of these guys.

Speaker 7 (34:43):
I mean, I think there's a few guys that that
are pretty good. I mean, I know he's retiring now,
but Pat Maroon was always amazing on all those runs
to the Cup finals. He was always great. Brad mar
Shan is always like I always know it's going to
be easy work with him. Even when he is serious
and maybe he's not joking around, it's like he understands

(35:03):
the assignment. Like he's not giving you some like cliche
answer that's not even he's not even thinking about your question.
Like to me, you don't always have to be like
fun and like mister personality. But if you just actually
listen to the question and give me like an engaged
response to me, that's worth just as much as a
guy like telling a joke or whatever. So Brad, Brad's

(35:25):
always been good. Steven Stamcos is always amazing. He's actually
he's got a great personality too. Then I'm not sure
that the league has tapped into as full as they could.
You know, whose personality I would love to see more
that you don't see in media, but that actually is
is awesome. Lean Drysidel like he gets a little he

(35:46):
gets a little curmudgeony, like he's a little bit of
a grump when it comes to the media. Hopefully he
won't hate me saying that if he ever sees this.
But like when the cameras aren't on and he's just
in the rink or at practice, or like you run
into him at the lobby at the whole like he's great,
He's got so much person he's so funny. So I
wish we could get that out there a little bit more.

Speaker 2 (36:08):
His teammate Conor mc David not nearly his upbeat. I
AI interviewing Jackie.

Speaker 4 (36:12):
They're both dry though they're both dry.

Speaker 7 (36:15):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, player, I want to ask.

Speaker 1 (36:23):
You about the Jackie Rebmind Show on the NHL's YouTube.
This is awesome because I remember one of those conversations
in the gym we would have is you were reluctant
to leave NHL Network because the fact you are opinion
it and it's been great what you've done. Yes, you know,
there's so many hosts who are not We're naturally deferential,
past first point cards, all the rest of it. But
you're like, no, I watch hockey, I haven't opinion, I
have stuff to say. So I thought one thing you
were worried about leaving NHL networking, go, if I'm on

(36:45):
turno oid doing these quick hits, I won't give a
chance to have that voice.

Speaker 2 (36:48):
How Yeah, to have this point now with the Jackie
Rebmind Show.

Speaker 7 (36:51):
Yeah, you know, it's so funny. And by the way,
like credit to the to the NHL Network and all
of you guys working there to like allow me to
have the space to feel comfortable to be a part
of the conversation, because like the truth is that's not
always the case right like that, it's just like that's facts.
But everyone, like both of you, everyone that EJ. Raddick obviously,
Mike rought, Mike Johnson, like all of you guys were

(37:14):
so good about it. Because it's one thing for like
producers to say, hey, Jackie's gonna like have an opinion
on this one, but for the talent to also be like, yeah,
we're cool with that, or like hey, no, your role
you're a host, you know, it is really nice. So
that was always something that I'll always make sure I
say about the network and you guys there as well.
And then in terms of like I still do miss

(37:35):
the network because you know, two hours four to six
heading til now, like that was a lot of that
was a lot of.

Speaker 2 (37:41):
Lee sh a V.

Speaker 7 (37:42):
Like I could just go off. I don't quite have
that with the Jackie Redman Show. We've kind of made
it a little bit more into sort of an interview
special if you will, but it does give me a
little bit of that as well. And so I still
miss I still miss the network days though I got
to come back there more.

Speaker 4 (38:01):
Jackie.

Speaker 3 (38:02):
You know, you go from winning to let drafted to
all these things you're doing now and you work so
hard in this industry, But was there ever a moment,
because no one's paths really linear in this industry, is
there a moment that kind of tested your resilience and
and you were kind of like, uh, is this gonna happen?
Am I going to get to this level that you're
at now?

Speaker 7 (38:21):
Yeah? One hundred percent. And that happened when I was
still living and working in Toronto, right. I was working
at sports Net shout out the Score where I got
my start av NOS and so, you know, I was
working in Toronto at sports Net, and you know, I
was doing well for myself. I was doing a lot
of things. I was hosting countdown shows. I was doing

(38:41):
sports at Central, which is like you know, the Canadian
version of Sports Center Highlight Show on the weekends, and
like things were good, but hockey was always what I wanted,
Like that was my dream and I was trying to
sort of break in there at sports Net for a
long time, and I did you know, I did some
American Hockey League games. I did some Canadian college hockey
games listen. I had a great time doing that. Like

(39:05):
I went out east to cover like the CIS Championships
college hockey had an absolute blast, partied with all the
guys after, like it was amazing. Those are my younger years.
But you know, I really wanted to cover the NHL,
and I got to a point at sports Net where
I just felt like I wasn't going to be given
that particular shot. They did a lot for me, they

(39:26):
get you know, Greg Santoni gave me so much opportunity
to do so many other things. So I don't want
it to come off like they didn't see it in me.
But it's hard, right. Hockey is like the golden ticket
in Canada, and there's not really unless someone leaves, there's
no new spot, you know what I mean. It's like shah, yes,
as they should, as they should. And so it was

(39:46):
one of those things where, you know, when I had
the opportunity to go to NHL Network, I was afraid
because I was doing well at sports Net and I
had success, and I knew I had people there that
believed in me. But I really wanted hockey. And anytime that,
you you know, move your life and you go do
this show, you have no idea if you're going to
be good at it, right, Like I had not hosted

(40:06):
a two hour live talk show in my life, and
I was going to go do it, and I remember
asking my dad like, I don't know, maybe I should
stay here, stay in Toronto. I'm doing well, like I
don't know what this road is or if I'll be
good at it or what the actual show is. And
you know, I'll never forget my dad just saying to
be like, listen, if you and you know to be fair.

(40:29):
During my time in Toronto, someone once told me that
I didn't stay in the box enough to cover the NHL,
that I was a little too lucy Gussie. We've come
a long way in like fifteen years with like personalities
and like the Paul Bissonettes of the world, but back
then it was like, listen, you got to stay in
your lane, you got to stay in the box, and
you don't really do that. And so I just felt

(40:52):
like I wasn't going to break through that and I
didn't know what to do. And I remember my dad
telling me, well, listen, you can start staying in the
box and not being yourself and maybe you'll get some
success eventually years down the road, but you could also
wake up two years from now and being your exact same. Yeah,

(41:16):
can you guys still hear me.

Speaker 10 (41:18):
Yeah, So anyways to wrap that up inside along with
an answer, is that orror you can't said on yourself,
go Nytel, that work, that's screw.

Speaker 7 (41:29):
That you belong in the hops world. And if it
doesn't work.

Speaker 11 (41:33):
Out, at least you know you went down swaying like
you went for it. You didn't like to play scared,
and so I said, you know what, I can't play
scared in life. So I'm going to go do this
show and I'm either gonna stink or I'm gonna swim.
And luckily, you know I had water wings up start,
and then.

Speaker 2 (41:50):
I made it.

Speaker 7 (41:50):
I'm able to swim.

Speaker 1 (41:52):
So yeah, yeah, last question round up by the music.
You're beloved me beliefs Jackie. If ever there's a ton
the Leaves are gonna go deep, it's this they get
to avoid the Panthers and Lightning. They win the Division
Battle Ontario first round. How are you feeling about the buds?

Speaker 7 (42:12):
You know, you know who you know who would be
cheered up immediately if the Leafs lost Game one today?
See him punk like I would not hear the end
of it. Aside from being aside from being able to
beat up Paul Hayman. Nothing would nothing would make see

(42:34):
them punk happier than the Toronto may Police losing today.
So he could just blow me up like he would
just love that. He would love it. Let's hope that
doesn't happen him and with it the spectacular brought him
back around, brought it back around.

Speaker 2 (42:51):
That's a real host. You can catch that. Cant all
playoff go ahead.

Speaker 7 (42:55):
One last thing I'm gonna say, if I don't see
the sends, ride in the bike right after the game
doing the postgame like like Elf back in the day,
Like you're not missed opportunity, like you need Brady and Chuck.
You need to be on the bike doing your post game.

Speaker 2 (43:12):
Could score post game.

Speaker 7 (43:13):
He just.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
Wade interviews.

Speaker 7 (43:20):
It's so good.

Speaker 1 (43:21):
Amazing cat you can catch on w W at Wrestle Media.

Speaker 2 (43:25):
Phenomenal job. We love and miss your NHL network. This
is awesome. Jack. You're the just celebrated birthday, by the way,
so happy thirty three. We'll talk to you.

Speaker 7 (43:31):
Yay, Yes, Amy, love you guys, Thanks for having me on.
Miss you both and I love seeing that you guys
both continue to crush. So enjoy the playoffs.

Speaker 2 (43:48):
Apologies but honestly stop on the sixties.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
Waned a little bit post to Oscars, but I got
more than a few DMSPO want to know more about
Magazine Dreams, So I gotta read a couple of quick
blurbs here about the movie, and I'm gonna get the
Twels movie, which he directed, because our producer is also director.
But this was from Carlos Agiir of the Rap What
Majors does the writer director Elijah bud his Magazine Dreams
is Killian Maddocks, an alarmingly single minded bodybuilder stirring straight
into the abyss of his own despair. Is the kind

(44:11):
of earth shattering showcase that turns an actor into a legend.
His unclassifiable potency leaves us the audience to grapple with
the fearlessness on display. And one of the ones for you,
Owen Gliberman here, who's a long term career entertainment week
one of my favorites.

Speaker 2 (44:23):
You race for variety.

Speaker 1 (44:24):
At certain points, Killian goes crazy, yet Major's brilliant performance
cues us to the grander note of despair that's always
driving the explosion. Travis Bicklin taxi driver was crazy too,
but the beauty of that movie is that his disconnected,
pent up fury expressed something that's there in all of us.
Magazine Dreams creates a character haunting in its extremity, but
his dream becomes ours, as does the heartbreaking prospect of

(44:45):
being stuffed before our eyes. Check out Magazine Dreams wherever
you can on bod right now sounds great. I mean
you got to see, dude, You're gonna love it. Passion
right there, speaking of being locked in our man, tal
Pinchewski co directed the Way New Documentaries I watched on
S and Y fantastic.

Speaker 2 (44:59):
I mean, listen, I lived in Connecticut for nine years.

Speaker 1 (45:02):
When I got the job at the ESPN, I said
to my wife, a Ki, I went to live in Hartford,
I said, growing up the Whalers. And I got Randy Latiser,
are you kidding? And then the first thing I talked
to my buddy David Ambery, he said, you're not living
in Harford. I know what I got to know, Civic Center.
I'm gonna live right there.

Speaker 2 (45:12):
I'm gonna think about old Samuelson.

Speaker 1 (45:14):
Every day because no, no West Harford or Avon, that's
where all the ESPN guys live.

Speaker 2 (45:17):
Okay, Well, Harper Hartford's terrible.

Speaker 1 (45:19):
Now we got relocated to Harford right down Temper two
much when it came from Toronto, And he's right, it's
a nine to five town.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
The city shuts it after five.

Speaker 1 (45:25):
I couldn't believe him is coming from Toronto, where I
lived in North York for years. There's you know, rabbos
twenty four to seven. Here, there's nothing open after five. Dude,
it's horrible to get groceries to go to the gas station.
Where the hell am I Hartford has gone? It's gone
to shit. Having said that, tallis documentary, very nostalgic, but
at a time where people loved Harper and they were
mentioned cities which of course I knew.

Speaker 2 (45:45):
They mentioned Avon, they mentioned Farmington West. Harper is a
community area.

Speaker 4 (45:48):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (45:48):
The Whalers were the best part of it. I texted
John Fords in the media group text. There's a there's
a shot of Forestland the final game. He goes on
a meaningless night, a night that has such meaning. I'm like, yes, talent,
including Forestland. He goes the final light here for a
Whaler's game.

Speaker 2 (46:00):
It really hits you.

Speaker 1 (46:01):
Jay again, not being from Hartford but having lived in
Connecticut nine years. You know the hash we have as
hockey fans, the sports fans to have a team where
he had no other major sports team, to have it
and then lose it. I mean, I appreciate the film
because it made me appreciate what the fans were like.
But it may be upset again what it must have
been like to lose a hockey team in the Whalers,
because it's never been the same in Connecticut.

Speaker 4 (46:19):
Well, sequel for tal Quebec City, Yes, nice tow. I'm
just saying.

Speaker 3 (46:26):
The Nordiaks have Darryl de Merce who is still wrought
with pain that they were ripped from the hands Barcelo
bu My dad works for a wholesale mirror and glass
company and they basically built the videotron center that was
gonna supposed to house the Nordiaks.

Speaker 2 (46:43):
Oh so that that.

Speaker 3 (46:44):
Building that the junior team plays in now is this
incredible building that does not have an NHL team in it, so.

Speaker 4 (46:52):
Needed up upgrading, right, yeah, upgrade yees. So they did
the videotron the s.

Speaker 2 (46:57):
But as far as well, here's the craziest thing. I mean,
you were importuately you didn't have a chance to watch
it yet.

Speaker 1 (47:01):
But the best part, Tell, Tell, the best part was
when you should these celebrities there who are supporting the Whalers.
Roger Staubach, the great quarterback. Here's the best was a
tennis guy, Evon Lendall. Talk to me about that. Include
that video.

Speaker 8 (47:12):
Ev Yeah, so that was pretty fascinating.

Speaker 12 (47:16):
So after Howard Baldwin, the founder of the team, sold
them to a different group, they brought in basically a
celebrity board that included Staubach, Bobby or Ivan Lendel.

Speaker 2 (47:28):
Oh.

Speaker 12 (47:29):
Yeah, basically they were all kind of buddies of the
new ownership group and they needed they wanted some names
to bring in because they didn't really have names on
the ice help prop up the team. And so they
did these commercials for the Whalers, which we have in
the film, and it's a little surreal, like you see that,
you know, Ivan Lendell wearing the full whaler's gear and then.

Speaker 8 (47:49):
Going whenever I'm in Hartford, I always go to see
the Whalers.

Speaker 12 (47:53):
Or Roger Staubach, who knows a Stabach actually made it
out to a Whaler's game, but he did a commercial
selling tickets for the Whalers, saying whenever I'm in Hartford.
I always go to see the way it was a
you know that the team was sold and moved not
long after that period, but uh yeah, there's just there's
a lot of fun, strange moments like that in the

(48:13):
history of this franchise, and we tried to tap into
all of them.

Speaker 1 (48:17):
Best interviews obviously, I mean Larry Plow great accent, Olf
Samuelson very good.

Speaker 12 (48:22):
But my guy Chris Berman, he is fantastic and we
we we interviewed over thirty people for the film, including players, coaches,
ownership executives.

Speaker 2 (48:33):
Howard Baldens your guy, he's bald guy and.

Speaker 12 (48:36):
Was a great, great advocate for the film. He lives
out here in Los Angeles. He's actually a neighbor of
mine and we've talked.

Speaker 2 (48:43):
You gave him a special thanks at the end. He
had like his own car.

Speaker 12 (48:45):
He was fantastic. He was a tremendous advocate for the project.
But you know, we Jackie Redmond mentioned Paul Maurice and uh,
you know, we we got him.

Speaker 2 (48:55):
She Stu Grimson was great.

Speaker 12 (48:56):
We got Dean Evisman, we got Stuve Grimson, we got
Brian Burke, I mean we we uh you know, we
got a lot of great people.

Speaker 2 (49:02):
Cause I mentioned the one that was glaring missing, Ron Francis.

Speaker 12 (49:06):
Yeah, so Ron Francis, we were told by the crack
and we would get him. They had they then had
a year. Yeah, and then well yeah that was towards
the middle of the city and they had turnover. Well yeah, exactly.
Then they had turnover in their communications department, so he
had new people to deal with, and then their season

(49:28):
just fell off a cliff. And once that happened, it
obviously got much harder to get him. So we're still
working on it. But yeah, that was obviously a glaring omission.
I think it's my understanding is it's not a topic
he really cares to talk about that much.

Speaker 4 (49:45):
Was fantastic, Yeah, I think, yeah, Ron Ron really doesn't
want to talk about that. I wonder why.

Speaker 12 (49:51):
That's something that I mean, maybe it's because he gets
asked about it and has been asked about it so much,
and he wants to be maybe known more as an
They make himself.

Speaker 2 (49:59):
Like a god like Boomer goes he could run for governor,
I mean he is.

Speaker 3 (50:05):
Why wouldn't he maybe take the Rangers gig we can
get We can get into that later in this episode.

Speaker 8 (50:13):
But yeah, but he was he was one glaring omission.

Speaker 12 (50:16):
But we really were able to get pretty much everyone
else wanted to talk whalers, which was a lot of fun.

Speaker 8 (50:21):
And appreciate you checking it out.

Speaker 3 (50:23):
Of course, send me the link because I I will
harbor I have the whalers a couple of things, and
you gotta say. They have a music video they put
out about the whalers. There was a song they would
play was Verbacon. To tell them, hey, listen, he told
Brookie Goes, stop playing the song. The guys don't like
it feels like Mickey Mouse here, like, okay, we'll stop
playing the song.

Speaker 4 (50:39):
We had. Yeah, we it was like holiday sweater in
San Jose holidays.

Speaker 1 (50:43):
But the best part about is this. This is the
single best part. As we know every year they lose
the bruins of the HAPs as far as they told me.
I asked me because dude, there was one year we
had the seventh best record in hockey and we were
fourth in our division. Like it was brutal every year,
but this is the best part. To out, there was
a parade after they won one round. There was a
joke and to check out, they had a parade at

(51:05):
Harper they won one round.

Speaker 12 (51:07):
I love that tho incredible and in a weird way,
it's like uniquely Hartford. They lost to Montreal in the
second round in eighty six. Montreal went on to win
the Cup that summer. That the you know, the contention
around Hartford was, well, if they had just beaten Montreal
in game seven, that was the Claude Lemieux overtime goal.
If they just find a way to win that game,

(51:27):
they maybe they go all the way and then Hartford
wins the Cup and that there's this universe where they're
a Cup winner and the team still they have prayed
for losing the parade for winning a playoff series.

Speaker 8 (51:39):
Yep, they did.

Speaker 4 (51:40):
Yeah, that's unreal. I gotta watch that.

Speaker 1 (51:42):
No, definitely check it out. And honestly, the coolest thing.
I love people watch the logo. Like to this date,
it's still well the highest selling memorabillage. And the guy
who defined the look, I think this is Peter Good.
He does a great stray but out the whale. Every
think it was really really cool stuff.

Speaker 2 (51:54):
All right.

Speaker 8 (51:54):
He passed away not long after we interviewed him.

Speaker 2 (51:56):
Actually you mentioned the credits he passed We were.

Speaker 12 (51:58):
Really grateful to be able to get him and talk
to him. And yeah, it's airs not a.

Speaker 2 (52:02):
Hockey guy, not even logo he did, Yeah, not at all.

Speaker 12 (52:06):
It's airing on some regional sports networks right now in
the US. I'll keep you guys posted as far as
where people can catch it next.

Speaker 2 (52:13):
Please do.

Speaker 4 (52:14):
Yeah, check out Titty Pinchewski.

Speaker 1 (52:17):
She's just taken that nickname and run with it. Thanks
so much to Darreld Demers and Jackie Raven and the
entire crew. Thank you for listening to NHL Unscripted. We'll
