Jason Demers may be a little jealous about Adnan Virk's cinema-loving fans, but he's pretty optimistic about the Toronto Maple Leafs this season. Jason and Adnan also break down the Connor McDavid suspension, the J.T. Miller trade rumors and a potential Pittsburgh Penguins fire sale. Then Carolina Hurricanes forward Jordan Martinook stops by with his young son, Chase, to share some memories from a very special trip to Cabo. Adnan closes with a story from director Barry Sonnenfeld's new book before actress Jillian Mueller (a.k.a. Jason's wife) confronts Adnan about his scathing review of Wicked.

He's having a great.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
Season for the Carolina Hurricanes are one of the better
teams in hockey, and Demurz knows them well. So there's
lots of great inside baseball stories that you're really going
to enjoy. We also have thoughts on Conor McDavid's suspension,
what's going on with the Penguins. There's a whole lot
to get who here Vancouver Canucks ramping it up. But
I want to start first off because social media is
very important to me and Jay. We're trying to grow
the pod here, so again, please do tweet at us.

Speaker 2 (00:50):
You can hit us up on Instagram. We're always very responsive.

Speaker 1 (00:53):
You can go to Apple Podcasts wherever you get your podcasts, subscribe,
rate and review. How about Demurs going after Teddy Fiorte
who tweeted sorry to see your podcast, Go man.

Speaker 2 (01:01):
I loved every episode. Called in a few times.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
He's a friend of my A file three hundred thirty
six episodes, eight years was critically acclaimed.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
Demrse Rice back. Get over it, Teddy.

Speaker 1 (01:10):
He does something better now it's unscripted. He still talks
about movies. He just doesn't have an echo chamber for
his bad takes. You can call me all pick up.
You just just divisterated, Teddy. He just do see he
loves stuff.

Speaker 2 (01:21):
You buried the guy.

Speaker 3 (01:22):
I went scorched earth on Teddy. I just I Every
goddamn day I get go on. We posted, we post
a clip, or we post the link, and I have
to see Hey man wins fo coming back Hey And
yet damn it, the incestuous love of cinema. It's a
great pod, is a great pot. Get over it, folks.

(01:43):
He does something better. It's unscripted, unscrippy with Verk and
de Mercy's even He's even top of the billing, still
top of the billing. He's got his own. He's got
his own segment played thirteen years in the NHL. I
don't have one segment. I'm just sitting here chatting it up.
With me and taller producer. That's just sitting with the
worst lighting, squinting like magoo over there.

Speaker 1 (02:05):
If you don't like hockey, cinoph and sixty is what
Jay is referring to. And if you need to question
Jason's bona fides by the way he not only loves
but we said his passion about them. But his wife
is an acclaimed actress, Jillian Mueller, who perhaps will make
an appearance at some point. I know if it's today,
don't know what it's gonna be. But she gets fired
up about something one of my takes, maybe she'll come
off the top rope as well and see what she's
got to say.

Speaker 3 (02:24):
Well, see she's listening because she heard a little bit
of last episode and I got I was on the
road with the Sharks doing some radio yeah, and I
got a huge long text message that I sent to you
being like she was like this is for ad Nan,
and I'm like, oh my god, I'm so glad she's
gonna come on. I think she's getting readied, just getting prepped.

Speaker 2 (02:45):
Oh all right, gets clothes on. Here we go. Tails
from the road.

Speaker 1 (02:49):
I was just in Toronto for the lightning and the
leafs as The Leafs are now four and oh on
Prime doing fantastic. Also, it's the Flyers Devils on Saturday.
Shout out to Ken Danigo hooked me and my son up.
We got the the wristbands, which are fantastic. Free chicken tenders,
steak unlimited, Pepsi ice cream, so things to Big Papa
Daniel Froking, it's up. Before I get your thoughts on that, though,
Mike Myers is at the game and I was like,

(03:09):
oh my god, how do we not have Mike Myers
on set? We've gona have conversations and I go way
back with Mike and they're like really, I'm like, oh
my god. When The Love Guru came out, which again
not many people have seen, there was a role that
was the audition for the movie for the role.

Speaker 2 (03:25):
Of a sportscaster.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
So I auditioned for it, didn't get the role, but
years whatever the movie came out. I had the audition,
excuse me, the chance to interview Mike because he's doing
the junket and as you know, the way the junkets go,
you get three minutes with this guy.

Speaker 2 (03:37):
You come in, you come out.

Speaker 1 (03:38):
There's hundreds of outlets interviewing him. But since I was
working at the Score at the time, I got my
three minutes. So I go in there, shake hands, pleasantries,
and rather than toss up softballs about the movie, I
went right in. I go, Mike could be a huge fan,
and let's start with this. The movie could have been better.
And he's like, okay, And I said, there's the role
of a sportscaster, who whomever it was? And he goes,
I auditioned for it, I didn't get it, and he's

(03:59):
a guy, go I would have been great, Like I'm
in Toronto the sports cast, Like how how the hell
did I not get the role? And I gotta be again.
The rest of me is great, You're a great Timberlake
is unbelievable. His character's name is Jacques Lacande. I go
for you really playing of every French stereotype, and I
really enjoyed Itim Jessica Alba fantastic who years later I
interviewed instead of file And I'll get to that story
in a second. And Mike Launch is right in the character.

(04:20):
He goes, Okay, what do we have here, oh guy
from the bidder burn? Well, well, well you're here to
complain with the factor we're in the movie. Okay, let's
you what else you got?

Speaker 2 (04:27):
Then that's all there is.

Speaker 1 (04:30):
I tripped, Timmy tripped right back. But he's a great
dude and the movie is awful. But okay, one thought
that you can go on the love Guru. This is
what happens, Jays. You know in Hollywood when you have currency, Hey,
you can do whatever you want. Bro, you made us
a ton of money with the Austin Powers franchise. You've
made so much money.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
Who do you want?

Speaker 1 (04:45):
What I really want to do is we were the
main p leae from the Stanley Cup. Mike, this is
America already gives a shit with the least. But that's
what I care about. Okay, fine, we'll let you play
like an Indian mystic and he becomes a guy who
heals at least whatever. That movie effectively derailed Mike Myers's career.
TA look up his IMDb. He has not made any
major film of consequence since That's how atrocious that movie
was received.

Speaker 2 (05:04):
And you're telling me you like it. It effectively ruined
his career.

Speaker 3 (05:08):
Uh yeah, well it's one of those things that just
I thought it was. Well, here's a couple of things.
I'm gonna take away from this whole thing. Okay, that
whole rant that you had, and we were almost out
of time folks here.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Talking about that's what we want to listen to.

Speaker 3 (05:19):
I mean, you not getting the roles in more of
a you problem than Mike Myers problem. You probably just
weren't good enough one. But it's okay, it's okay. Jacques
lecoqe Grande was the only worst actor I've seen do
an impersonation of a guy from Canada. French Canada is
Keanu Reeves and young Blood. That's probably the only other
guy that's worse. But Young Goode is a great movie.

(05:43):
The fact that you said Jessica Alba is a good
actress is horrendous. She's Her best movie is Into the Blue.
The scene where she's swimming in the water. Great, when
she's underwater. That's the best thing she's done. Nothing nothing
against her. I think she's not a dark angel fan. No,
I think she's done. Listen, She's had a great career.

(06:04):
Do I think she's a great actress? Now? Not my
cup of tea, not my cup of tay. But you
did think chocolate cock Grande. That is you just that
is what you think of the people of French Canada. Canadia.

Speaker 1 (06:15):
Let's get to the hockey, shall we. John Tavares out
week to week with a lower body injury, the man
who ruthlessly ripped the captaincy off his chestersro mind the world.
He's still among the league's elite goal scorers. Austin Matthews
entering Wednesday's action five goals is his current four game
goal street.

Speaker 2 (06:29):
The Leafs sit comfortably in first place.

Speaker 1 (06:31):
As I mentioned Jay, watching that game, it was interesting
because Austin Rena of the Gates scores. You know, Tampa
Bay showed a little bit of life. But I think
the Leafs have their number first the Atlantic right now.
They're four and ozer on Amazon Prime. They had this
three game losing streak and Willie Nielandard comes out and goes,
it's only a three game losing streak. And took a
little bit of heat there in Toronto, and I'm like,
and Jody Shelley loved it. He goes, yeah, that's exactly right.

(06:52):
It's only three game loser, Street, and we was played.
Hockey knows how hard this sport is. It's not a
big deal. Willie by the way, second league in goals
to twenty eight.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
This Leaf's team. What do you make of this little
run they've on right now? If to losing three straight,
they win three straight.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
Yeah, I mean again, they're gonna make the playoffs. They're
gonna have guys that are gonna be good. Obviously. I'm like,
let's see in April when it's playoff time. That's my
big thing with them. It's the same with the Winnipeg Jets.
There's nothing against any guy in that team. I think
they all have great players. I think they've done a
great job adding pieces on the back end. Chris tannev
and Oliver Reckman Larson have done amazing things. They've revamped

(07:27):
that decoor and then they've the one thing that I'll
say is why I think I'm more bullish on them
this year than I have in past years, is they've
finally found a little semblance of consistency and nets and
that's the biggest thing they've been missing. They've always had.
You know, they pieced together this Frankenstein tandem at times

(07:48):
guys that just weren't playing and then getting injured, and
they now got Anthony Stillars, who is out but they
have you know, Joseph woollen Net who's fantastic. He's my
wonder Well he's been great.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Come on, oh yeah, Michell Network said to me, he goes, hey,
I like the pod. Just one thing.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
Don't sing because I know you love Sinashura. I know
demerstings he can sing.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Shut up with the singing. Uh no.

Speaker 3 (08:14):
But yeah, they have a good goalie tandem. And you
know Joseph Wolsden great. I mean, even Matt Murray's down
on the miners playing fantastic. And then you you know,
you go to the bench boss and Craig Berube has one.
He understands how to he seems to get how to
get the most out of these guys. And I honestly
think that Willie nielander his kind of attitude a little bit.

(08:36):
And I think I say that in the most positive
way possible. He does have an attitude, but I think
that's what makes him so good. And I think Berube
understands that and kind of likes when he is a
little bit cocky and and you could see it on
the bench when he wasn't playing early near He's like,
just put me on the ice, and Bruba is like
play better than do something, and then they kind of
they probably have this really cool, unique relationship. So I

(08:59):
think this is if there's a year, we say it
every year with the leafs and I'm I'll see and
I've been like waking up in April. But honestly, if
there's a year, it's this year, because you know, you
got everybody's getting a little bit older. You I'd probably
say that the experience that this team has got over
the past years, and the scars they've kind of gotten

(09:19):
and and cuts they've taken from all these losses and defeats,
I think is gonna finally give him a boost and
they're gonna at least make it out of the first round.

Speaker 1 (09:28):
But I'm with you that the collective feelings wake me
up in April May whenever, whatever, you know, let's see
it because we've been burned so many times in the past,
which I think is totally fair. Turmoils running the Vancouver Canucks.
According to Elliott Frieman of Sports and Our Buddy Freeze,
there was talk that J. T. Miller might be held
out of Vancouver's three to two wins Saturday night against
the Edmonton Oilers as trade talks involving and progressed, reportedly

(09:48):
even at trading places in Miller to the Rangers, who
drafted him the first round the twenty eleven draft for
a package featuring Philip Heedo, Ryan Linggren and other assets
including a first round pick, didn't happen. We've talked with
this before, Jay, this is an alleged rift with Eleis Pederson,
j T.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
Miller. Just one of these guys have to be traded
for things to get better.

Speaker 3 (10:07):
No, I've we we went through this a couple episodes ago,
but you know, I'll echo it again that you have
to figure out a way to make it work. There's
no way that if you trade one of those guys
that are making the playoffs anyway and their borderline now
you know they've had They've got bigger fish to fry.
You know, goaltending has been tough. Demco can't stay healthy
and he has when he's back, he hasn't been good.

(10:27):
He has been up to snuff defensively, They've they're not
the same decoor. You know, Quinn Hughes is I saw
some stats that like when Quinn Hughes is not on
the ice, they are absolutely abysmal in every metric of
driving play and scoring chances for and scoring chances against.
It's just not pretty when he's not on the ice.
So he's really their only guy cooking. And then up front,

(10:47):
you know, Peterson's making eleven six a year and he
hasn't done much and he's you know, nothing against him
in terms of he's a good player, but he's just
not playing up to his his you know, the money
that he's making. So but do I think they trade JT.
Miller it all goes away? No, I think it would be.
I don't think they make the playoffs. So I heard
about that Nick's trade. And conversely, if I'm another team,

(11:10):
I'm doing what I can to get JT. Miller because, yeah, JT.
Miller is a little fiery. Yeah, he's probably a little
bit too hard on himself and on his teammates and
can be a distraction. But I think with the right
group of veterans and for a limited run of like
starting you know, at the trade deadline till playoffs, I
think he is an invaluable ad to any team and
is so he would just provide such a spark and

(11:33):
you know, you put him on the Rangers, and I'm
immediately going from these guys are borderline making the playoffs
to this is Cup contenders in my eyes, just because
he's he's so fiery and he plays in every you know,
he can play in every situation.

Speaker 2 (11:47):
Speaking of a.

Speaker 1 (11:47):
Little bit of rough stuff though, Connor McDavid and Tyler
Myers suspensions. McDavid gets games for crossing Connor Garland the
head Connor and Connor violence, second suspension of Jesus' career
following a two game ban February twenty nineteen. After the
legal hits the head of New York defenseman Nick Letty
Leon Dreysa.

Speaker 2 (12:06):
The latter expressly he thought the punishment was too severe.

Speaker 4 (12:09):
Certainly, I think three games is a little little too
much for either side. But yeah, I guess we don't
overly care about having our best players in the league
in the game, so.

Speaker 3 (12:27):
I'll leave it at that.

Speaker 1 (12:28):
Oilers even released a team statement that read, the Oilers
organizations disappointed and we shared our fans frustrations with the
three games suspension of our captain Connor mc david. Will
you support him through the process the organization our fans
report on them back the line of Brazil next week.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Three Gamer too much.

Speaker 3 (12:44):
I mean Edmonton's statement they released is a little soft. No,
if you're gonna if you're gonna go at the league,
go at the league like come on, like you're.

Speaker 2 (12:52):
Say this is outrageous or we're irate, will challenge this.
You disagree, we'll see back.

Speaker 3 (12:57):
Fine. No, listen, whatever Myers got, he was getting. You
can't do one an the other. Again, I think that
play should have been whistled fifteen seconds before. So I
do think it's on the reffing now, the refing. It's
a fine line and it's kind of a playoff style game.
It's dying embers of the game. But the goalie's pulled.
They're wrestling on the ground doing you know, Greco Roman wrestling.

(13:17):
It's not even a hockey play. So I would have
whistled and gave both them a minor and this never happens,
so you know, I feel like that would have avoided everything.
But then once the cross check happens, you know, you
have to take repercussions. Now, I think it was probably
between one and three games. They went on the high
side three It could have been one, but then Myers

(13:37):
was just as bad behind and he I'm sure got
three as well before Connor got three. They probably waited
a little bit longer with Connor. But yeah, it's tough
when you take you know, you take out a guy
that's the face of the league and take him up
for three games. And we were going through a crazy
stat of like the amount of games, sorry, amount of
penalties that Connor McDavid has drawn since his past four

(14:01):
years is like way down, Like he's not drawing as
many penalty So that either means that he's just not
being as dominant as it was, which is not the case,
or refs are letting it go a little bit more
on him and kind of letting people have their way
and hooking and holding him and not protecting him as much.
So do I think that's the case. I don't know.
That's for the fans to look and take a piece.
We just pour a little gasoline on the fire and

(14:23):
let you let you people cook. But I just think
that was off sides by Connor. Listen, you're cross checking
a guy in the chin. It's still a dangerous play.
It's a stick. You're crossing him the face. I know
you're upset, you're pissed.

Speaker 2 (14:36):
It is what it is.

Speaker 3 (14:38):
Uh, he's gonna take the suspension. He'll be back, probably
four points in his first game back, and just give
the old fingy to everybody's fuck good and they're gonna yeah.

Speaker 1 (14:47):
So how about the fact even Houston Texans running back
Joe Mixon mentioned the suspension, but.

Speaker 3 (14:52):
Joe Joe Mix watches hockey.

Speaker 2 (14:54):
We gonna try to get him on a lay Listen
on script Joey mis take me out to Dinna Texan's
tough loss against the Chiefs.

Speaker 1 (15:03):
But Joel Dixon is still in a the scripted they
do stack especially can playoff time one more.

Speaker 3 (15:08):
We're talking photo. Hang on, you're talking about the refs
in Kansas City. That's easy.

Speaker 1 (15:12):
Now wait, this is the controver's talking about its favorable treatment.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
So Rick Deck and Mahomes is a Mahomes is a
diver right now, it's just ask yeah, soccer's But again,
he's richer than us and he's a great athlete, so
you know I could say this and he can. I
can go suck it.

Speaker 2 (15:29):
Listen.

Speaker 1 (15:29):
As long as the Eagles win this weekend. I need
another Eagles super Bowl win. I've had one in my
lifetime and I lost it. We need one more Eagles win.
They're gonna beat the Commanders and then I'm hoping. Listen,
Bill's Maffia and the Eagles. Unbelievable, what a game that
would be.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Well, I'm more, I'm you know, I'm on the Cinderella
train with Commanders right now.

Speaker 2 (15:44):
I just I have to be I know that's weak.

Speaker 3 (15:48):
I need I need a poster of that face you
make when you go, oh yeah.

Speaker 2 (15:52):
And I can't even hide my contempt. You can't. It's awful.

Speaker 3 (15:56):
You live in contempt.

Speaker 1 (15:58):
There are four win teams a year ago, and it's
a great story. And Jane Jalels is awesome. The fact
that you're pulling for the commander, like, that's that's Eagles.

Speaker 3 (16:06):
Let's go against the Eagles fan base.

Speaker 1 (16:08):
That's different. You're anti Phillies, That's what that's about. Me
and Jim Sarator one more for you. According to recent
reports online, GM, Kyle Dubas and the Penguins officially open
for business. So Tristan Jarry, who I don't know if
you said this on there or not, but I agree
with you, like he hasn't been good for a while,
so we could agree on that he's put on waivers.
But a report from Archie Sports Clams ever on the
team available except for said the Kid and Kenny Malcolm,

(16:32):
Brian Rust, Philip Thomasino and Owen Pickering, so two big names.
I would throw Rust in as well in a couple
of guys. I think Pickering, Yeah, traded land over a
month away. Penguins aren't going anywhere, and you know I
both know this. The worst place to be is kind
of one foot in, one foot out. Either you're going
for the playass, you're gunning for it, you real estate
think you can do it, or you just say no,
we're we're out like it's and we'll just punt on

(16:52):
some assets and and we'll reload. What do you think
the way it's gone for the Penguins. Dubis unfortunately has
not been able to make things work.

Speaker 3 (16:59):
Oh, I mean I would fire Kyle Dubis off into
the sun if he does what I think he's gonna do.
Just man, anytime you have sid and I've heard a
ton of people say this, and unfortunately you know they
were first to it because you know we film on
Wednesdays and you know it is what it is. But
you know, anytime you have a healthy Crosby that's doing
the way and playing the way he's playing, for you

(17:20):
to even consider a goddamn rebuild is so stupid. Look
at what they do with Ovechkin. They Ovechkin was ademic
like two years ago and like the team. They were like,
he might not get the record and this and that,
and he has a good year, and management and ownership
comes out and backs Alexandrovechkin, they say, until the wheels

(17:41):
fall off of him and he is no longer the
Russian machine, we will continue to try to win a
cup and have a competitive team on the ice. That is,
that team was a hundred times worse and less had
less talent last year than this Penguins team does right now,
and they're talking about getting rid of it instead of

(18:02):
maybe finding a place, maybe finding some some guys to
bring in, because wasting Crosby his last year's in his
twilight years, even though he's still dominant, is just such
a spit in his face whatever you want to call it.
You're spatting, spitting, spitting in his face, kicking dirt in
his eyes, and you're you're just telling them, hey, you
know what it is, what it is, You're just gonna

(18:24):
play at the PPG arena for the rest of your
career and not even sniff a cup. So if I
was him, and I wonder if he has conversations with
Dubas uh. And I'm not a fan of Dubas because
I saw him after the Winter Classic. I was on
the plane going back. He was sitting, he was sitting right.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
In front of me.

Speaker 3 (18:42):
I just went, hey, Kyle, you know, getting meet and
Jason reseen, and he just goes, hi, yeah, And I
was like, oh, no, no, Kyle, don't do that to me. Kyle,
you know who I am. Probably does no, he probably,
he probably doesn't, even though I was like, come on, fella,
I was in analytics, Darling, which is his that's what

(19:04):
his thing.

Speaker 1 (19:04):
Yeah, he's all the analytics didn't work out in Toronto,
but Pittsburg is trying to make it work.

Speaker 2 (19:08):
To your point, it's like managerial malpractice.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
Like you've got Sid who's a generational player and he's
gonna play the last few years relative obscurity.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Like you just you can't rebuild when you have this guy, period.

Speaker 3 (19:18):
No, you can't. You wouldn't do that with McDavid. You
wouldn't do that with McKinnon. I know they were younger,
but Crosby what he's doing. If you were looking at
his body of work this year and last year, he's
not slowing down. So why would you waste a year
and not try to win? Now, maybe you get a
first overall and it kind of turns your team around,
but because you have said you don't need to fully rebuild,

(19:39):
he's obviously such a cornerstone piece. But I just think
it's it's crazy to me, like the fact that they
wouldn't push to make up the playoffs this year and
keep trying to is is asin eind.

Speaker 2 (19:51):
Even if they're squinting right now, like Tall the potential playoffs.

Speaker 3 (19:53):
Spot, he's fucking magoo over there.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
Time now for Jordan Martinook, who is having a terrific
season the Carolina Hurricanes, you'll want to listen to the
story that chemistry has with JD as former players. Plus
what kind of an animal would order just vanilla ice
cream at a dinner?

Speaker 2 (20:10):
You'll find out next Well, Jason de Burs and this
guy go way back.

Speaker 1 (20:24):
Jordan Martin Hook the Carolina Hurricanes joining us right now,
and uh, I'm gonna let JD take over the second here,
but Jordan joining us along with his lovely son chase,
which is a classic move here.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
Just bring the sun on.

Speaker 1 (20:34):
So now we definitely can't ask anything hard hitting, nothing incriminating.
But I'll tell you one thing Jason told me some intel, Jordan,
which is I have to start with this. You think
I started with some hockey, maybe Marty Natchius, maybe rober
Brenda Martin. No, JD tells you the biggest Nickelback fan alive.
What is it with you and Chad Kroger.

Speaker 5 (20:50):
Well, I'll burt a band, uh just had some had
some very good times at a couple of other concerts,
and yeah, it's the band I grew up on. So
when I was a kid, that's all we listened to
out in the prairie. So uh yeah, uh yeah, big
Nickelbacks fan, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (21:09):
Can you can you growl through a lyric or two?
This is how you remind me?

Speaker 3 (21:12):
Oh, I mean, he's karaokeated enough. You get you've you've
ran into him once and hung out with him a
little bit, and and he's it. He's a big hockey
fan Nickelback. I mean the whole band, not to just
Chack Kroger, but the whole band is big hockey fans.

Speaker 5 (21:25):
No, yeah, wan, I got to sing with them, So
that's uh, that's a that's the highlight of my professional career.

Speaker 6 (21:31):
That's for sure.

Speaker 2 (21:32):
Okay, more details on this. Where was it? How many
people hundred thousand while Jordan Martinook sings?

Speaker 6 (21:37):
No, Well, I was in Raleigh.

Speaker 5 (21:38):
That was that last last year, right at the start
of the season, right before training cap and it was
at like the outdoor music venue here and I think
there's about twenty thousand people. So, uh, sang Box Star
with them, and yeah, it was cool. It was Uh,
it was unbelievable, that's for sure.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (21:57):
Was Chase in attendance? Did you see did you get
to see Dad sing?

Speaker 6 (22:01):
Chase was not there, but he's seen the video many times.

Speaker 3 (22:04):
How was Dad was?

Speaker 6 (22:05):
He? Was?

Speaker 3 (22:05):
He singing pretty good?

Speaker 6 (22:08):
It was on key?

Speaker 3 (22:09):
All right, that's good. You mentioned Raleigh, buddy, and you
know I was with you. I had the pleasure of
playing with you in in Arizona when you were a
young pup and now you're a season vet, established yourself
and everything. How's it been in Raleigh and and you
know living in that just kind of great family, family atmosphere.

Speaker 5 (22:27):
Well, yeah, obviously we spent our time together in Arizona
and had no kids, and we were having fun and
got to go out a little more. And now the
season of life has definitely changed. So we are got
two kids in school. We are not going out. We
maybe get an odd dinner here or there, but our

(22:49):
lives kind of revolve around.

Speaker 6 (22:52):
Him and his sister.

Speaker 5 (22:53):
And it's six thirty AM practices on Saturday mornings and
Ninja Dragon games on Saturday Sunday afternoons. And there's been
a big week in Raleig because we've had snow for
the first time I think in three years, so there's
been school canceled. It was beautiful sunny day out today,

(23:14):
but I guess the roads are too icy, so they
have another snow day tomorrow. But he's pretty happy to
geus to stay home again.

Speaker 3 (23:21):
Well, talking about truancy and snow days and things that
are offsides. I have a question for you. It's about
statute of limitations. I was supposed to be on You
came on NHL Network a couple months ago and they
asked me, and I was so mad. I wasn't in
studio because I wanted to bring this story up. And
I've been holding on to the story. So, I when
Marty left Arizona during the you know, and then COVID happened,

(23:44):
I was renting his house. So I lived in his
house for probably a year year and a half, and
one of the most remarkable tenants anybody could ask for.
Kept it absolutely dialed in everything. So when I'm leaving
the house, I'm I clean up the place because he
was going to sell it, so I was getting it ready,
me and my wife just just it's absolutely immaculate. I'm

(24:04):
pretty sure he made a hell of a return on it.
But as I'm leaving, I'm like, oh, there's some some
stuff left over. I'm like, do you want me to
like send you anything? No, I don't get anything. It's
all good, So I'm okay. So he had a dice
in vacuum there, so I grab and he knows what
I'm going on. So I grabbed this dice in vacuum,
take it with me. Don't hear anything for like two years, okay,

(24:25):
and then two years and I get two years, I
got a text. All I get is hey, uh, me
and quarter looking for that his wife. We're looking for
that dice in vacuum. And I was like, yeah, I've
had it, and he's and he's like, well, it's an
expensive vacuum. He's like, can you send me some cash
for it? And I was like, what are you kidding me?

(24:47):
So I still send him the money, but I've been
holding on to that, and I said, what are the
statute of limitations if you leave something in the house
that you're selling.

Speaker 5 (24:54):
Well, first off, first off, we got all because it
was my furniture in the house that he was renting,
so all my stuff was in there. And when we
sold it, we got all all the stuff moved into
a storage unit.

Speaker 6 (25:07):
I thought we got.

Speaker 5 (25:08):
All the stuff moved into unit, but there's a couple
of things that didn't make it in that storage unit,
including my dice in vacuum. So we get to our
our stuff gets delivered to our house in Raleigh and
we don't have a vacuum, and I was and of
course like, oh I remember having that big, beautiful dice
in in in Arizona. So she's like, do you mind

(25:29):
texting JD. So this is more on court than it
was on me. I said, let's just get a new vacuum.

Speaker 1 (25:34):
But then.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
If it's on the life right, then Jay that's what's understandable.
He's just chiming in.

Speaker 6 (25:42):
He's in the background.

Speaker 3 (25:44):
I sent the money. I sent the money. Can we
ask how much shity? It was overvalued? You know, typically
you buy furniture stuff, and I looked on Amazon. It
was overvalued a bit. But listen, I knew I caused
some damage. It's about three hundred.

Speaker 6 (26:00):
Yeah, listen too. But I didn't ask about those.

Speaker 3 (26:04):
What else did I take?

Speaker 6 (26:06):
No, I don't know.

Speaker 2 (26:06):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (26:07):
Well, I took some of the I took some of
the booze. Yeah, I took some of the booze. I
think that you left it was it was low quality wine.

Speaker 6 (26:14):
Yeah, so that was the vacuum story. I knew you
were going to bring that up.

Speaker 3 (26:17):
I have been holding on that and the goddamn thing
doesn't work either, he said, junk.

Speaker 6 (26:22):
Well, maybe I'll bend mill you a couple hunter back.

Speaker 3 (26:24):
I'll take fifty back.

Speaker 1 (26:28):
In the interest of asking one question about the hurricanes,
where we will dive back in more topics and petty
grievances that JD wants to have with you.

Speaker 2 (26:34):
I didn't want to ask him about Rod Brendan Moore Jordan.

Speaker 1 (26:37):
I loved him as a player, obviously when he was
with the Flyers, the Blues, and now as a coach,
he's been so successful five hundred wins.

Speaker 2 (26:43):
Now, to me, when I look at Brendan Wore, I'm like,
you know, it's very I.

Speaker 1 (26:46):
Always think of like him being an athletic trainer, like
if he was a trainer, that I have to listen
to what he says, because clearly he practices what he preaches.
So if he's telling me about conditioning, I'm like, well,
clearly he's in the best conditioning. What can you tell
me about Brandon war that the average fan doesn't realize.

Speaker 6 (27:00):
Well, you're you're well on the right topic.

Speaker 5 (27:02):
There's in before practice, after practice. He does our all
our fitness testing every year, which is pretty crazy. I
think the older he's getting all the heart of that
bike test is getting on him.

Speaker 6 (27:14):
But I just think he's he's an unbelievable motivator.

Speaker 5 (27:19):
I don't like the NHL's posted a ton of his
speeches throughout the lot, throughout his time coaching, and especially
in the playoffs when obviously the light has shined a
little brighter on the team. He he can he can
really get you going and before the game. It's I

(27:40):
think it's a it's some coaches haven't. Some coaches don't.
He definitely has it to be able to to be
able to get the team ready to go and a
lot of preparation. And it's not just him, it's our
entire coaching staff. They do they do, Uh, they do
a great job getting us ready. But definitely the motivation
factor that he brings is big.

Speaker 1 (28:01):
And by the way, Gordy House still played the game
at fifty Rod Brendanwre's fifty four.

Speaker 2 (28:06):
Could he play an a game, Oh.

Speaker 6 (28:08):
I think you could probably get a couple of fourth
line shifts in there. He'd be.

Speaker 5 (28:14):
Well, they have the alumbn guy alumni game here the
other night for Rik Stall's jersey retirement.

Speaker 6 (28:18):
He still looked pretty good.

Speaker 3 (28:19):
What did it was his stat line when you have
one in one or something, He looked like he drove
the net on one and made a sick move.

Speaker 5 (28:25):
Yeah, he had a goal and then uh he was
out there for the game winner against though, So I'm like,
for me up there, former winner.

Speaker 6 (28:37):
On his best defense.

Speaker 3 (28:39):
Well, you talk about, you know, Rod being a motivator,
but you do a lot of that too, and you
know it went as far back as with me, and
you know you you're kind of have the iconic mista
sketch nick Off And how did that you know kind
of when did you start that?

Speaker 2 (28:55):
And what? You know?

Speaker 6 (28:56):
What did that was in Arizona? I started that in Arizona.

Speaker 3 (28:59):
Okay, yeah, exactly, I know, I know the answers. I
got to ask you the question though, it's the fancy.

Speaker 5 (29:04):
Yeah, the well, you remember Sweet Lou, the parking attendant.
So when I would drive with Connor Murphy and Toby Reader,
I would always sit in the back and it would
be Connor driving in Toby and Sweet Lou would always.

Speaker 6 (29:16):
Go, oh, mister Connor, I'm mister Toby.

Speaker 5 (29:20):
I like, I don't know how itered into me doing it.
I would do it to Toby Reader and I go, ah,
mister Toby. And then when I came to Carolina's Fetch
was eighteen years old.

Speaker 6 (29:33):
He was like nervous.

Speaker 5 (29:35):
He didn't speak a ton of English, and I ended
up being on his line the first game. And I
don't know, for your first game, you're always a little nervous.
So I just did that out of nowhere, and I
don't know what kind of stuck is it?

Speaker 3 (29:50):
From like a place in nerves or is it really
just something that you know it gets you hyped up
a little bit.

Speaker 6 (29:56):
Yeah, well, I I like yelling, I like being well
you probably are going to say I like being at
the center of it.

Speaker 5 (30:04):
So it hard to be at the center of it
in Arizona because I had so many guys like you
and Ritchie and nots.

Speaker 6 (30:13):
I was more of the punching bag there than the
the show off my personality.

Speaker 2 (30:19):
They were me and you.

Speaker 3 (30:20):
I was never I always brought you back, but they were.
They'd get on him a little bit. Kevin Cannatt and
Bradley Richardson together are are are tough. I mean, one
guy that you probably all want to win for is
not only Stallzy, but you know Brent Burns, who's been
around for so long, and I mean a lot of

(30:41):
people have heard stories about him, and I haven't been
played with him in a while, but you know, I
have my stories of him of like, you know, him
getting bit by a cheetah and then getting a tattoo
of it, But like, has anything happened just in terms
of like his preparation and how wild he is because
he does some some stuff that's just so zany and
out there and anything you've seen or that he's added

(31:01):
that I haven't seen when I played with him, Well,
I I.

Speaker 5 (31:04):
Don't know if he was doing the like was he
doing the coffee you were with him? Like, No, he's
got like his blender that he blends his coffee and
brings all his coffee and his beans and all that,
like that's in one of his He's got like six
suitcases for a one game trip like he take. He
takes care of himself obviously to be able to play

(31:25):
this long, you got you got to take care of yourself.
But he's got every machine known to man on him
at all times.

Speaker 6 (31:31):
And yeah, he's he's each.

Speaker 5 (31:37):
Thirty five ounces of steak, usually the night before a game.
And yeah, he's he's one of a kind. And like
you said, that's probably the number one guy that what
we want to win for and he's been around for
so long and it's never won one.

Speaker 6 (31:51):
So yeah, he's he's the Cheatah story is.

Speaker 5 (31:56):
Incredible though, and I love that you were on his
team when that happened.

Speaker 3 (32:00):
Oh yeah, he went to a zoo to go get
like a private tour. I can't remember where what zoo
and then he went into the cheat exhibit and they said, hey,
just you know, be careful, you know, don't you know,
get too ornery around the cheetah. And he did and
moved a little too quick. The cheetah took a piece
out of him, right out of his ribs. And he

(32:20):
came into the ring the next day with tal happy.
He's I got a bit by a cheetah. He's like,
it's actually pretty bad ass. I'm gonna get a tattoo.
But he's got a tattoo in his ribs of it.
And it's like that's just the stuff he did. I mean,
he had his own owlery when he was in Minnesota
and all sorts of things like that. But you know,
switching gears a bit, and you guys are coming down
that stretch for coming into Four Nations and then the

(32:43):
Break and everything, and we talk about Guys. We talked
about the last episode of Guys going on Break where
they go and obviously we had some great times. And
I told you I was bringing this story of up
of us going to Cabo for probably one of the
most legendary trips that was highlighted by a picture with
you and Kyle Busch that I wish I still had,

(33:03):
but we got a restraining order on us by Kyle
Busch because we were annoying him. It was on me,
it was but listen, we're all in it together. We're
we're you know, we're we're.

Speaker 6 (33:17):
Oh, you guys are hagging me on too. That was
the worst part.

Speaker 5 (33:21):
We had a few tequilas on the golf course and
then came back and I'm not a huge NASCAR fan,
but a fairly big NASCAR fan, and I was like, Oh,
I recognize that guy, and then I put one and
two together and it was Kyle Busch. So then I
went over and tried to speak out my ass that
I knew everything about NASCAR and.

Speaker 6 (33:42):
Just wouldn't let him go. He's there with his wife and.

Speaker 5 (33:44):
His kids, and he just wanted to have a good
time with his family, and we're belligerently bullying him about NASCAR.

Speaker 3 (33:50):
And maybe body part of it.

Speaker 2 (33:55):
Well, are you a pro athlete?

Speaker 6 (33:58):
Our NASCAR drivers athletes, So I better be careful.

Speaker 5 (34:01):
I'm I'm supposed to go to a race and one
of the guys is hooking me up, so I very
be careful saying that.

Speaker 3 (34:08):
Literally, there's one other guy on our trip. I can't
mention his name because the story's too good, but we
literally ended up going to dinner that night in Mexico
and Cabo and he only ordered ice cream for dinner.

Speaker 2 (34:21):
That's unbelievable. This guy only wants ice cream.

Speaker 3 (34:24):
Well, it was.

Speaker 2 (34:25):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (34:25):
We were like, what are you ordering? At like a
high in restaurant.

Speaker 5 (34:27):
We're at a table of like sixteen people, and it
goes around. Everybody orders, like we're at a Mexican restaurant, fajidas, caesadillas.
Everybody's going around, people are ordering Appy's drinks, and he
just goes, I'll get vanilla ice cream.

Speaker 6 (34:41):
And everybody's like, oh, okay.

Speaker 5 (34:42):
We're we're gonna order, We're gonna order our meals and
then we'll order dessert.

Speaker 6 (34:47):
And he goes, I'm just gonna have ice cream tonight.

Speaker 2 (34:50):
Kyle just an ice cream guy. Okay, No, it wasn't.

Speaker 6 (34:52):
Kyle wasn't.

Speaker 2 (34:53):
It wasn't guy. Now, Kyle wasn't with us.

Speaker 3 (34:55):
Kyle wanted no part of us.

Speaker 6 (34:57):
Kyle was done with us at the pool.

Speaker 2 (35:01):
It's awesome. I' Jordan Martin Hook.

Speaker 1 (35:03):
Obviously you appreciate the stories and obviously the laship you
have here with JD. We're pulling for you, man. This
is great stuff and the best year in the family always. Yeah,
thanks guys, all right time after a little cinephile in sixties.
So Paris Sonenfeld one of my favorites. He's got a

(35:23):
new book outs called Best Possible Place, Worst Possible Time.
He is the director of the Men in Black trilogy,
Adams Family one and two.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
Get Shorty.

Speaker 1 (35:31):
He was the first cinematographer for the Cone Brothers, so
he shot Barton Fink. He also shot Raising Arizona, Miller's Crossing.
He's great, obviously, I've ever very time, blood simple now
his TV that lives in Canada, all other stuff. Anyways,
his first book was amazing, was called Barry Sonfeld Call
your Mother.

Speaker 2 (35:47):
He talks to me.

Speaker 1 (35:48):
He is the worst parents ever, Like he just despised
his parents. You know, when they die, people like I'm
so sorry. He's like, I'm not like because they are
nice people, but they're horrific parents. And he's a very neuroic,
funny filmmaker. So I had him previously on cent of
five years ago. It's a great interview. People to want
to look it up. It's well, we'll seeing people still
talk about to be like, Oh my god, so On
felt so fun.

Speaker 2 (36:04):
So his new book. I couldn't wait to read it.
It's amazing.

Speaker 1 (36:07):
I want to tell you a couple of stories, specifically,
one of which have you seen the film Get Shorty?

Speaker 2 (36:11):
Because I love it. I think it's a great.

Speaker 3 (36:12):
Yeah, Get Shorty and be Cool.

Speaker 2 (36:15):
Yes, speak exactly right though was a fault. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (36:17):
So John Gibolta plays Chilli Palmer, of course, his adaptation
to Elmore Leonard novel Gene Hackman, Delroy lind To, etcetera.
Trilli inside inside Hollywood movie satiric. So Hackman, he said,
on one of the first days they're shooting, Travolta is
late coming out of the set, and he goes, Jeane's
the kind of guy that comes there like he is
ready to rock. He's got his He's got not only
his dialgue memorize or everyone else's dialg memorized. He's like

(36:37):
he's a total pro. He goes, but you can just
feel an anger, like he's not taking any bs. And
Travolta shows up a little late and clearly does not
have his lines memorized, and he goes, Travolta, I've never
been anybody who loved being a movie star more than
John Travolta. He goes like, he's just he's all about
that life. He goes, now, doesn't mean he's a bad guy.
He's very charming. He's a nice guy, but he's not
prepared and he kind of fumbles his way through, and

(36:57):
you know, we kind of get through it.

Speaker 2 (36:58):
So he said, Hackman's getting more and more pissed as
we're doing take It and takeing. Chavrolta can't do it.

Speaker 1 (37:02):
And at one point Barry's wife comes or he always
calls Sweetie, very endearing, and she comes over and she's
in sweet He says to him, like, how good is
Gene Hackley.

Speaker 2 (37:09):
He's going, I love Genacking. This guy's on blieve He's
so great. He's like, it's like okay. They go back
to to take and Hackman goes, are you fucking kidding me?
And Barry's like what.

Speaker 1 (37:17):
He goes, you're gonna take advice from your wife? Like
you're the worst fucking director I've ever seen in my life. Seething,
Barry turns the ad and goes.

Speaker 2 (37:26):
Hey, when's lunch. He's like the three hours away? Maybe
two always like we're doing lunch. We're calling lunch guys.
That's it. That's a wrap. They're like, okay, he goes
Gene I talked to. He's like, he goes Lean's in.

Speaker 1 (37:36):
He goes, hey, man, I get it, like you're mad
at John because he's not a pro like you. But
he doesn't mean he get to to mean my wife
for the rest of this shoot. If you want to
yell at me and take it on me, I'm totally
fine with that because I totally get it, but that's
not fair to criticize her.

Speaker 2 (37:51):
Hacken goes meet me my trailer in ten minutes.

Speaker 1 (37:53):
He's like, right, very good to sit in there, and
he's like, listen, I was out of line, you know,
because this job. He's like, I'm a real man's man,
Like I'm just like a really masculine guy and I'm
here and I can hate myself and I you know,
I wear makeup for living.

Speaker 2 (38:05):
I played dress up.

Speaker 1 (38:06):
And he's like, that's really at odds with who I
am as a person, but this is the life that
I've chosen. So like, I'm always've always a lot of anger,
you might have a lot of contempt.

Speaker 2 (38:12):
And Berry's like, okay, man I got like he's just
listening to his therapy excess whatever exactly.

Speaker 3 (38:16):
That's the that's the softest guy excuse for being made.
He's probably a little bit he's anyway.

Speaker 1 (38:23):
Eventually they get through it later on in the shooting
and the problem is consistently going, but they're just getting
through it.

Speaker 2 (38:29):
Eventually. There's a really important scene that he's gotta have
Trolta set.

Speaker 1 (38:32):
So Barry tells Travolta because hey, John, because I'm giving
you three days Friday, Saturday, Sunday, you gotta memorize this
small like you gotta nail it. Okay, we're doing it
Monday early. It's a lot of work, but you're gonna
have to bring it okay. And John's like, yep, He's like,
clear your schedule. It's like, you got it.

Speaker 2 (38:46):
He's like sure enough.

Speaker 1 (38:47):
He's like over the weekend is when he found out
rape was the day ut that he got nominated for
for Pulp Fiction.

Speaker 2 (38:52):
You got nominated for Best Actor Oscars. Travolta's back.

Speaker 1 (38:55):
So he goes that day sure enough. You know, he's
literally asking about what tuxedo should I wear? What do
you think of this outfit?

Speaker 2 (38:59):
Whatever?

Speaker 1 (39:00):
He's not focused, and when it's time to shoot the scene,
the guys, he's not coming.

Speaker 2 (39:03):
Out of his trailer and he said, what's the issues?
Like he doesn't he doesn't feel well. He's sick.

Speaker 1 (39:08):
And again, song Fu can feel Hackman glaring at you,
because I'll take He goes to John and John's Berry's like,
I just don't feel well.

Speaker 2 (39:14):
I can't do it. He's like, I know he said
this in the days, like I just like I don't
feel well. And he's like, John, we have to do it.
I told you. This is the scene. Like I can't.
We're already of our budgets. This is how it goes.
He's like, no, I just can't do it.

Speaker 1 (39:22):
And he's like, okay, you know what we can do
is maybe we'll do some Q cards. I should travel
to like kind of a movie snaps to attention. He's like, really,
like if we have Q cards, like I might be
able to get through it. He's like okay, So he's
like we get Q cards made up, and Hackman is
beyond furious now, like just justiss.

Speaker 2 (39:38):
He's screaming at Barry Sonefeld you ship director. This is
like he's just killing Berry because he's furious with Travolta. Anyways,
they get through it. The movie is out.

Speaker 1 (39:48):
If they're at the premiere and he feels berry Sonfeld
feels a tap in the short's aut Geen Hackman and
they have not talked very much ever since. The We
rap like that's once it was over. I see like
he knows Gene hates everyone and hates him, and he goes,
just be clear, I'm only here to support a couple
of friends in the movie. I don't care for you,
and I don't think that's a very good movie, but whatever,
and he's like, yeah.

Speaker 2 (40:05):
No problem, Gene, I got it. Movie plays afterwards, excellent reviews,
rapturous reception.

Speaker 1 (40:10):
Gene goes up to me and he goes, it's really good.
And he goes and he's really good and he's like yeah.
He goes Tramultez writing the movie. He's like, you know,
because I was I was wrong about you. And he's like,
it's okay, you don't need apology, goes, I'm not gonna apologize.
He's like, always gonna tell you is I thought you
were a fucking idiot and you're not.

Speaker 2 (40:27):
That is Gene. Actman, ladies and gentleman.

Speaker 3 (40:29):
Yes, that is in Cinephile in ninety seconds and what
a review. That's actually unbelievable.

Speaker 1 (40:36):
But to your point, what's with these actors? Do they
think they're tough guys? Like you're playing make believe for
a living, you're not.

Speaker 2 (40:40):
A tough guy.

Speaker 3 (40:41):
Well, most of them are Thespians. That's the thing is you.
They're the drama kids that got let out early so
they didn't get beat up. It's in high school. Not
not all of them. There's some that are legitimate and
you know, like anything. But I'm not gonna sit here
and say that. You know a lot of these guys, Yeah,
it's it's make believe they play. They're great actors. But

(41:03):
come on, come on, get over yourself, come on, take now.

Speaker 2 (41:08):
You're gonna take me to task. Now because you saw Wicked.

Speaker 3 (41:11):
I'm gonna give you my take on what you think.
You were very a scathing.

Speaker 2 (41:15):
Review of it. It was dismissive.

Speaker 3 (41:17):
But go ahead, yeah listen, I don't I'm talking. And
somebody's ears are burning over there. My wife and me
watched it and she is of the musical theater agent
has performed on Broadway and not by do not no, no,
not to say that it doesn't like it, but her
take on you was the fact that you she listened

(41:37):
to the episode and she sent me this huge thanks
to Jail for listening.

Speaker 2 (41:40):
Love that she did.

Speaker 3 (41:41):
She listened to every episode and she listened. She gives
me reviews, and she wrote this long winded thing. I'm
on the road at a game and I see I see, like,
oh my god, ad NaN's review of Wicked, Like are
you anyways? Is I have to find it? And anyway
I won't find it, but I'm gonna let her kind

(42:02):
of tell it and maybe spark sparing your.

Speaker 1 (42:04):
Little rather rather than you reading the text. She's gonna
come on right now, this is what we're doing. This
is like I first take her something like, I wasn't
ready for this.

Speaker 2 (42:11):
I didn't think, oh.

Speaker 3 (42:12):
Yeah no, this is we're now. She's oh god, this
is to catch a predator. But all right, that movie
review edition. So we're gonna Jillian, let's go get in here.

Speaker 2 (42:23):
I didn't know this condemption.

Speaker 3 (42:24):
I know you're listening. Yeah, fine, she's coming in. She's
coming in hot, she's studying.

Speaker 6 (42:29):
She read it.

Speaker 3 (42:30):
Her term was her term was her term was? He
likes jukebox music, jukes bo jeez, I'm gonna let her
say it.

Speaker 1 (42:37):
Okay, Oh my god, Hi, Jillian Mueller is here, Ladies
and gentlemen.

Speaker 2 (42:42):
Great to see it. Jill.

Speaker 1 (42:43):
We love your husband, We love the fact for doing
this podcast, and I appreciate the fact that you're listening.
And I butther you up by the apparently you have
great contempt for my dismissive attitude towards Wicked.

Speaker 7 (42:53):
Please tell me it's so funny because now I took
a screenshot of what I said, and now I feel
like so bad because I'm like.

Speaker 2 (43:00):
This is so aggressive for what we're talking about. This
is not that deep. But I had a opinions. It
was like eleven PM that night.

Speaker 7 (43:06):
I'm like, listening to it.

Speaker 1 (43:08):
This is the vast majority of people would agree with you.
The movies made six hundred million dollars. It's got critical praise,
So go ahead, Black.

Speaker 2 (43:15):
My issue is not even that you don't like it.

Speaker 7 (43:16):
I actually love a strong opinion, and I specifically love
when something's like loved by people and then it's like
underwhelming to you, because that's kind of usually how I feel.
Once everybody likes it, I'm like, well, I'm probably not
I'm going to be like a little Yeah. This was
my issue was you had said you had liked the
stage production of Mulan Rouge.

Speaker 2 (43:35):
Fine lobbed it, took my wife falatine.

Speaker 7 (43:37):
It look okay great, But you said that and then
go the songs in Wicked aren't that good. Mulan Rouge
is a jukebox musical. It is bad romance and like
Chandelier and Britney Spears songs being stung a song in
a musical theater way, whereas Wicked is like original music.

Speaker 2 (43:55):
You can still not like it.

Speaker 7 (43:57):
It could still not be for you, but you cannot
compare it. And that is my stance.

Speaker 2 (44:04):
It's a fair point. I still will not.

Speaker 1 (44:06):
I still don't think the music and Wicked is puicckarly
strong the exception with the exception define gravity and popular
is pretty catchy.

Speaker 2 (44:12):
But you are right, Willan Ruse is a remix of
popular music.

Speaker 6 (44:15):
All that song. So to me, it's just it's two
different it's.

Speaker 1 (44:19):
Too, two different genres than the musical genre. Yes, what
if I tell you I love Jersey Boys, is that
the same thing? Is that a jukebox musical?

Speaker 2 (44:24):
That is a jukebox musical?

Speaker 7 (44:25):
But I love do they do the story that's like
a biopic type musical. So I'm into that.

Speaker 2 (44:31):
I do love when they do that.

Speaker 1 (44:33):
Well, I love the fact that you were this passion
enough to hop on here. Listen, you have to come
back now. Okay, you're you're an acclaimed actress.

Speaker 2 (44:39):
You're gonna come back.

Speaker 1 (44:39):
We're gonna do Oscar previews. We're gonna come back and
do post Oscar show with us.

Speaker 7 (44:42):
Now.

Speaker 2 (44:43):
Is that good?

Speaker 6 (44:43):
Yeah?

Speaker 3 (44:43):
Anytime?

Speaker 2 (44:44):
Anytime.

Speaker 7 (44:45):
Okay, as a matter if your listeners actually give a shit, no, well,
we're gonna.

Speaker 2 (44:49):
Get lots of Positi feedback before we go. Then what
did you think of a Nora?

Speaker 1 (44:52):
Because it's my favorite film, one of my favorite films
of the year, and Jason wasn't as crazy about it.

Speaker 7 (44:55):
I liked it too, I'm with I'm kind of with Jason,
just because but this is again, this is my own stuff,
where like I'm always sort of biased that I'm like,
they always want like the young girls taking their clothes off,
and so I was like, okay, and here we are
again again again.

Speaker 3 (45:09):
But listen, it sells and.

Speaker 7 (45:11):
That's why people are captured by it. I totally get it.
I do think everything always is a little long. I
feel like the movie could be like ninety minutes and
be like tight and really good.

Speaker 1 (45:21):
Okay, well thanks for having me guys, of course, Jillian Bulloch,
great to see you.

Speaker 2 (45:24):
Thank you so much.

Speaker 1 (45:25):
Next time, let's bring back in your husband here. That
was quite the sneak attack, but I think it was enjoyable.

Speaker 3 (45:31):
My wife knows that I hide that jersey and only
I get the full jersey wrap.

Speaker 2 (45:38):
Well, your point. She wanted to eviscerate me, but she's like,
this is the first time talking to this guy.

Speaker 3 (45:41):
I can't kill him or I'm listening going she's sweet
as a button right now, She's going to add and
mother beep, mother beat this guy.

Speaker 2 (45:50):
We need we need to read the original text.

Speaker 3 (45:52):
Me know his ass from his elbow, get paid him
beep beep, beep beep. And I was like, Jesus, honey,
he's a nice guy. She's like, never work with him again.
Sweet as the button, so he's apple pie.

Speaker 1 (46:05):
She agreed to come back. We're gonna do an Oscar's preview.
We'll do an Oscar's recap show. Jillian Willer be back.

Speaker 2 (46:11):
A couple of hockey items here before we close some
shop show today.

Speaker 1 (46:15):
This has definitely been all over the place, But this
is one that Bob Bennon was fired up about. No
for the first time. It is forty three years providing
play by playing for the Toronto Maple Leaves, legendary broadcaster
Joe Bowen Holy mackinaw request a day off from works
he can watch his beloved Notre Dame Fighting Irish played
the Ohio State University College Football National Championship.

Speaker 2 (46:34):
We all know the Irish loss by the way, thirty
four to twenty three. But the question is, do you
think Joe Bowen's a slacker?

Speaker 1 (46:41):
Now?

Speaker 2 (46:41):
Why first one missed?

Speaker 3 (46:45):
Yeah, this isn't a Chinese sweatshop here, Like, he can
take a day off if he wants.

Speaker 1 (46:50):
I think he's done more than enough for the game
of hockey and the Ape Lave specifically. And I and
I know Joe a little bit. I worked for MLSD
in two thousand and nine.

Speaker 2 (46:56):
Very nice man.

Speaker 1 (46:57):
If you told me what do you know about Joe
Bonen'm like, he loves Notre Dame. That's why the first
thing I told him, Like, dude, he's he is a
giganta Nore Dame fan.

Speaker 2 (47:03):
It's legit his thing.

Speaker 3 (47:04):
Fine, all good, I'll tell you. I'll tell you this
having worked on this side of the fence now and
being in media and you know, on the road with
the TV crew at NBC with Randy Handrewman, and I
work with Dan Rusanowski pretty closely.

Speaker 2 (47:17):
Nice.

Speaker 3 (47:17):
These guys do so much work and are so on
top of it day in and day out, supporting the team,
being ambassad of the team. I was sitting on the
plane with Dan Rosenowski and after every game he has
a couple of glass of wine and he'll usually fall
asleep right on his computer as he's chopping up the shows.
He's the best, but he'll turn and start telling me

(47:37):
stories and he literally, like one of the first times
we're on the trip together, he always look at me
because he's in the Hall of Fame, and he goes,
he always goes, stick with me, kid, and then he
and then he goes, he's one of the I love
going to dinner with him, chopping it up. He gives
me like all these eighties references. Yeah, and he turns
to me and he goes, you know, I've only missed

(47:57):
six games in my career. I think it was like
it might be even less than that, And because I
was like, oh yeah, really like and he's been working
since the Shark's inception, so since however, long ago, every
single game, and I said, oh, what made you miss?
He's like, I got hit in the car. I got
hit not hitting the car. I got hit by a
car and I was in the and I was in

(48:18):
the er and he's like, oh, my wife the game.

Speaker 2 (48:20):
I was like, Jesus Christ, Dad, and I still would
have done the game. I was like, I would have done.

Speaker 3 (48:25):
He's like I was trying to get there. I was like,
just an absolute warrior something. These guys deserve a day
off if they want, but these are such like coveted
jobs that you wouldn't even realize how coveted they are
that when you get it, you were like, I am
not leaving. I am here, I am working. These guys
work so hard.

Speaker 2 (48:41):
This is the last story we're going to do.

Speaker 1 (48:43):
In the first game following me with David's suspension, the
Older scored a bizarre goal against the Caps Tuesday, like
Corey Perry skated past to play the nachos that had
been hurled on the ice, pass washing a gullie Logan
Thompson immediately protest to climbing, he was distracted with a
discarded snack logan. Afford said, listen, you know you'll check
the rules and something's throwing there. The Rep's supposed to
wait the bees.

Speaker 2 (49:00):
It's my fault. I gotta play through the whistle. They didn't,
they didn't see it. Whatever, it's on me. Correct to them.

Speaker 1 (49:04):
But yeah, was I distracted? Obviously there's nachos. You played
a long time. The NHL said, games, what's the weirdest
distraction you ever encountered during a game? And I'm not
counting a woman flashing gave him monreal.

Speaker 3 (49:15):
I was gonna say, I was gonna say tits, but no, no,
I never did, never have.

Speaker 2 (49:21):
Told that story. He goes, they have girls the big
knockers and.

Speaker 3 (49:24):
Not chill problem. Uh what happened? I I mean the
funny I could just say the funniest thing I've seen
throw on the ice is I had this coach in
my my first year in the miners up, David cut
David Kunneth, awesome guy from mass and thick accent, just
an amazing no yeah but like his like father was

(49:48):
like friends with Whitey Balger and stuff like this guy's
got oh yeah, like he's like, he's a tough son
of a bitch. Like he's I've once seen him punch
a coffee pot with his hand, break his hand. He
beat up like a projector because it wasn't showing the
clips right. But he'd be on the ice and he
would literally throw like if we needed a time out
and we'd already burned it, he'd throw like he'd throw

(50:09):
like pennies on the ice and like change and I'm like, ah,
this change on the I'm like.

Speaker 2 (50:15):
You're gonna kill somebody with this.

Speaker 3 (50:17):
Somebody's gonna step on it, break their ankle on He'd
hockey just to get the time out. So like, that's
the biggest abstraction. That was probably my coach, but coach
kind of that's unbelievable. At Coyotes, a lot of the
games were distracted by the lack of fans distractions. It's
a dressed like a seat night some nights, and that
was not on the fans. That's on ownership.

Speaker 2 (50:39):
Yeah, one hundred percent. This was a lot of fun
here on Unscripted episode eight.

Speaker 1 (50:43):
Again, please go to Apple podcast wherever you subscribe, rate review,
tell all your friends. I thought this would be the
first episode we might go only one guest, but a
surprise guest again, Jillian Muller coming out of the top
rope to talk wicked, but once again thanks to Jordan Martin.
A great guest booking by Jason de Murz. We'll see
if Bender can step it up next time. Good work
at a towel, emiled out the glasses. Thanks for watching Unscripted,

(51:03):
and thanks for listening Scripted Go.

Speaker 2 (51:04):
Ahead, Yeah Yeah.
