Career overall and what you know, how did your life
in baseball even start? Let's start right there and then
we're going to bounce into the Richmond Park. How did
David Justice fall in love with baseball?
Speaker 4 (03:33):
All right?
Speaker 5 (03:33):
Well, look, Parney, you know, I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio, so
I grew up in the in the basically in the seventies.
Was born in sixty six. But you know when I
was nine years old, the big red machine, Pete Rose Concepcion,
you know, Morgan Perez Griffy, So says our Geronimo.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Bench that's where that's where are says our Geronimo.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
So.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
As a kid and Cincinnati, we all loved the Cincinnati Reds,
I mean all of us. And everybody played baseball. Even
though party I played football and basketball as well, everyone
played baseball. And when we were kids, whenever you for
bat day, we would go to Riverfront Stadium and they
would give real wooden bats.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
I'm talking about fellas, real bats. You know.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
You can't do that nowadays because somebody had died in
the parking lot after the game. But back in the
mid seventies, when people were cooler and saner and not
as crazy, you could give real bats at a baseball game.
So we would go for bat day party and we
would get these most beautiful red bats, and then those
(04:44):
would be our bats for the whole summer.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
So I fell in love.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
With baseball largely due to the Cincinnati Reds being such
a great team, and the city loved the Reds, and
everybody in my neighborhood played baseball, so it was easy
to fall in love with.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Who was your favorite player of the Big Red Machine.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Well, I mean I loved all of them.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Johnny Bench calls me mister Happy when he sees me,
because every time I see Johnny Bench, I think I'm
nine years old again, So I'm always hugging on him
and acting like I'm nine years old.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
But it's because I'm left handed.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
You know, I only I pitched him, played first base
as a kid, so I always wore Tony Perez's number
because I played first base. So I would say I
probably leaned toward Tony Perez as being my favorite player
simply because I wore his number. But I got I
was fortunate party to get to know Joe Morgan really well.
(05:42):
Pete Rose and I share the same birthday, so you know,
as a kid, every time it was Pete rose birthday,
I let everybody know in school it was my birthday too.
And but Johnny Binch, I mean, like i I've grown
in life to get to know all Concepcion.
Speaker 4 (06:00):
Morgan.
Speaker 5 (06:00):
I knew Morgan rest in peace. I remember the first
time I met twenty Perez. It was in nineteen ninety
three when the Marlins first came into the league. We're
down in Miami and we come out to the field
and I look behind the batter's.
Speaker 4 (06:15):
Box and I'm like, oh my god, they go Tony Perez.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
I got to go tell him who I am and
just how much he means to me, you know, wearing
his number. And I ran over to him, of course,
like a little nine year old kid. Again, you know
what I mean. It just told him the whole story
about me growing up in Cincinnati. And it's great to
see the appreciation that they have in their eyes when

you share with them how much they meant to you
as a kid, you know what I mean. But Parney,
I mean, like, I don't know if I told you,
but baseball there was my third sport. Like I didn't
even play high school baseball, Like I'm a basketball player.
I didn't know. I didn't play high school baseball. I
didn't play for my high school. I played summer league
baseball my whole life because that's what we did and

cincinnat and I played on one of the best teams
in Cincinnati from age ten to seventeen. We were one
of the dominant, you know, youth baseball teams Cincinnati. But
I was only playing baseball in June, July, and a
little bit of August, because that's how you know how
our weather is in Cincinnati. And but yeah, man, I'm
(07:21):
more of a basketball player, Parnie, than I am a
baseball player. I only played baseball in college. You got
a running for basketball. That's a true story. Everybody knows
this about me, Bro, I'm telling you party. So I
graduated from high school all time leading scorer in basketball
in my high school. My record stood for thirty years.
The only school that would give me a full ride

was Thomas what's called Thomas Moore University now. And because
I was only fifteen years old my senior in high school.
So even though I'm leading Northern Kentucky and scoring, I'm
just fifteen years old.

I'm still a kid.
Speaker 5 (07:56):
So the Division I schools kind of shied away, obviously
because I'm not six eight.
Speaker 4 (08:02):
I was just you know, six'.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
Two And Thomas moore came in and, said we'll give
you a full ride to come to OUR naii. School you, Know,
Parney i'm an only, child raised just my mama And.
Cincinnati only Way i'm going to college is by a.
Scholarship you know. Me as soon as he SAID. I
i signed that contract real quick to go to. College right,
So i'm on my way To Thomas Moore. PARNEY i

read shirt my first year Because I'M i give my driver's.
LICENSE i turned sixteen a month BEFORE i graduated high.
School get my driver's. License get my driver's. License In,
JULY i. Go i'm off to college In. August my
uncle gave me my first. Card nineteen sixty Nine Pontiac
lemon's custom mess three point fifty. ENGINE i know in

your mind right now you think it's something. Sweet let
me just a little. Bit wait a. Second it was
cream color exterior with a gold, top with a green,
interior with a little cut in the in the. VINYL
i don't know where the cut came. From had one
hundred thousand miles on it. FELLAS i kept that thing

i cleaned my, car. Stayed but, ANYWAY i go off to.

i'm pointing in the distance right, now BECAUSE i still.
Remember it was like some mountain looked like it was far.

RUNNER i can run all day in a basketball, gym
but don't just make me come out here and run
for no. REASON i looked over the hill and the
baseball team was. PRACTICING i, said you know, what IF
i played, BASEBALL i can get out of this. Running
IF i played, BASEBALL i can get out of this

running for. Basketball. PARNEY i lived twenty two miles from
my house my. COLLEGE i got in my, car went,
home got my glove and. Spikes came. Back the next,
day went to the baseball field to try out for
the team obviously made, it obviously made.

It i'm seventeen years old at the, time so.

While they doing that unnecessary ass, Running i'm over here
playing fall.

should be running is if something's chasing, you like a

You who was your role model in?

Basketball my favorite player Was George. Gervin all, Right. George,

ice in high, school my classmates would call Me. Iceman
So George gervin was On it's The. Iceman SO i
had THE i had the, uh the, poster you, know

him sitting up there with the ice cue with with
the ice cubes whatever. On he, SAID i don't know
if y'all ever saw. That AND i Met George gervin
at THE nba at THE Nba All.

Arizona i'm, Walking i'm walking behind him into the bathroom
And i'm, like we're THE, Ba we're at the, stadium
we were the, arena And i'm walking Behind. George, Girl i'm, like,
man That's george. GOVERN i gotta tell him he was
my favorite. Player of, COURSE i caught him in the. Bathroom,
hey Mister, Gervan I'm David. JUSTICE i played for The Atlanta.

Braves AND i just told him the whole. Thing of,
course now now we're, cool, THOUGH i MEAN i know him,

Ray we went and played In Chris paul And Devin.
Booker they had their charity golf event out In. Arizona
my Buddy ray invited me to, come he Invited DOCTOR.

J so we're hanging, together like we rolling.

Together we played in the same we played golf that day,
together went to dinner, together sitting on the, patio sitting
on the out on not the, patio but out on
our balcony at the, hotel, Me DOCTOR j and my.
Boy and this whole, Time i'm looking at DOCTOR j
LIKE i cannot Believe i'm sitting down here with DOCTOR. J,

WHERE i lost that little kid in? Me SO i
would say DOCTOR j for. Sure and that was just
a couple of years.

a memorable and special. Experience when people that like me

Point WHEN i think about that whole, time ALL i

was one of my real good, buddies lives In. Philly
so it gave me the opportunity to fly To, philly
go out and hang with, him go and you, know

hang with his family and meet some of his. Friends
and we had a good night In, philadelphia believe it or.
Not SO i was. GLAD i actually glad that. Happened
but it was just it was just a crazy. Party
that was one of the most probably the most crazy
traveling Experience i've ever had in my life was that time,
period because every everything was trying not to get me To.

get a hotel IN i, think in the, AIRPORTS i,
THINK i, well on the way, THERE i think it

like that at. ALL i just KNEW i was fortunate
to be coming up in the best, city the best
city in the, Nineties, atlanta playing with my, boys who
we talk about, now, like we never knew how powerful
and how great our team would be looked at.

Baseball we had great camaraderie on our. TEAM i mean

TIGHT a lot of it was largely due to the
fact we played it in the minor leagues together when
you have no.

sudden we go to the big leagues together and it's
like it just. Continues and then to Have Bobby, cox
a great, players, Manager Leo, Mazzoni Clarence, Jones Pat corralis
our coaching staff and then the minor, leagues you, know

Love snid was my manager in a ball in a ball.

Guys we Had Grady little on the miners with The,
braves had great coaches throughout a whole in an, organization
and it was just fun coming up with The. Braves
but never once sees DID i ever, think, like hey,
man what's it like to Be David. JUSTICE i was
just being a, regular you, know you, know AND i
you know in them, days you, know you play played
baseball uh, hard and then you know you try to

Career overall and what you know, how did your life
in baseball even start? Let's start right there and then
we're going to bounce into the Richmond Park. How did
David Justice fall in love with baseball?

Well, look, Parney, you know, I'm from Cincinnati, Ohio, so
I grew up in the in the basically in the seventies.
Was born in sixty six. But you know when I
was nine years old, the big red machine, Pete Rose Concepcion,
you know, Morgan Perez Griffy, So says our Geronimo.
Speaker 4 (03:51):
Bench that's where that's where are says our Geronimo.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Yep.
Speaker 4 (03:58):
So.
Speaker 5 (03:58):
As a kid and Cincinnati, we all loved the Cincinnati Reds,
I mean all of us. And everybody played baseball. Even
though party I played football and basketball as well, everyone
played baseball. And when we were kids, whenever you for
bat day, we would go to Riverfront Stadium and they
would give real wooden bats.
Speaker 4 (04:20):
I'm talking about fellas, real bats. You know.
Speaker 5 (04:22):
You can't do that nowadays because somebody had died in
the parking lot after the game. But back in the
mid seventies, when people were cooler and saner and not
as crazy, you could give real bats at a baseball game.
So we would go for bat day party and we
would get these most beautiful red bats, and then those
(04:44):
would be our bats for the whole summer.
Speaker 4 (04:45):
So I fell in love.
Speaker 5 (04:47):
With baseball largely due to the Cincinnati Reds being such
a great team, and the city loved the Reds, and
everybody in my neighborhood played baseball, so it was easy
to fall in love with.
Speaker 2 (05:01):
Who was your favorite player of the Big Red Machine.
Speaker 4 (05:05):
Well, I mean I loved all of them.
Speaker 5 (05:08):
Johnny Bench calls me mister Happy when he sees me,
because every time I see Johnny Bench, I think I'm
nine years old again, So I'm always hugging on him
and acting like I'm nine years old.
Speaker 4 (05:17):
But it's because I'm left handed.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
You know, I only I pitched him, played first base
as a kid, so I always wore Tony Perez's number
because I played first base. So I would say I
probably leaned toward Tony Perez as being my favorite player
simply because I wore his number. But I got I
was fortunate party to get to know Joe Morgan really well.

Pete Rose and I share the same birthday, so you know,
as a kid, every time it was Pete rose birthday,
I let everybody know in school it was my birthday too.
And but Johnny Binch, I mean, like i I've grown
in life to get to know all Concepcion.

Morgan.

I knew Morgan rest in peace. I remember the first
time I met twenty Perez. It was in nineteen ninety
three when the Marlins first came into the league. We're
down in Miami and we come out to the field
and I look behind the batter's.

Box and I'm like, oh my god, they go Tony Perez.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
I got to go tell him who I am and
just how much he means to me, you know, wearing
his number. And I ran over to him, of course,
like a little nine year old kid. Again, you know
what I mean. It just told him the whole story
about me growing up in Cincinnati. And it's great to
see the appreciation that they have in their eyes when

you share with them how much they meant to you
as a kid, you know what I mean. But Parney,
I mean, like, I don't know if I told you,
but baseball there was my third sport. Like I didn't
even play high school baseball, Like I'm a basketball player.
I didn't know. I didn't play high school baseball. I
didn't play for my high school. I played summer league
baseball my whole life because that's what we did and

cincinnat and I played on one of the best teams
in Cincinnati from age ten to seventeen. We were one
of the dominant, you know, youth baseball teams Cincinnati. But
I was only playing baseball in June, July, and a
little bit of August, because that's how you know how
our weather is in Cincinnati. And but yeah, man, I'm

more of a basketball player, Parnie, than I am a
baseball player. I only played baseball in college. You got
a running for basketball. That's a true story. Everybody knows
this about me, Bro, I'm telling you party. So I
graduated from high school all time leading scorer in basketball
in my high school. My record stood for thirty years.
The only school that would give me a full ride

was Thomas what's called Thomas Moore University now. And because
I was only fifteen years old my senior in high school.
So even though I'm leading Northern Kentucky and scoring, I'm
just fifteen years old.

I'm still a kid.

So the Division I schools kind of shied away, obviously
because I'm not six eight.

I was just you know, six'.

Two And Thomas moore came in and, said we'll give
you a full ride to come to OUR naii. School you, Know,
Parney i'm an only, child raised just my mama And.
Cincinnati only Way i'm going to college is by a.
Scholarship you know. Me as soon as he SAID. I
i signed that contract real quick to go to. College right,
So i'm on my way To Thomas Moore. PARNEY i

read shirt my first year Because I'M i give my driver's.
LICENSE i turned sixteen a month BEFORE i graduated high.
School get my driver's. License get my driver's. License In,
JULY i. Go i'm off to college In. August my
uncle gave me my first. Card nineteen sixty Nine Pontiac
lemon's custom mess three point fifty. ENGINE i know in
