Speaker 1 (00:00):
I had no idea, Taylor, I don't think you had
an idea. You thought it was what did you think
it was?
Speaker 2 (00:05):
I thought it was jungle Book. I was like, mug
got this on.
Speaker 3 (00:13):
And then Vanessa, I think you have also said that
you didn't know, or else you probably.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
Would have had a heart attack.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
No, I wouldn't have been able to speak English.

Speaker 6 (00:55):
Non spector moderator john Ley Brody always happen to be

channeling spot from Rapacon, my friends. How are you guys?
How is everybody?
Speaker 1 (01:06):
That's great?
Speaker 3 (01:08):
I'm dealing with some technical difficulties, so apologies, guys, but
we're going to get through it together.
Speaker 6 (01:14):
We will just like the Ghost Crew, we will figure
it out. Whatever the articles, we will stay on brand
with the show. Star Wars rebels and also our show
Pod of Rebelling. We will figure it out because we are,
after all, the family. If we are, if we're not anything,
we're a family.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
Right, That's right.
Speaker 1 (01:28):
I could use Chopper's help right now.
Speaker 3 (01:30):
I feel like he could like get in here and
chicks my whatever I'm dealing with here, because I certainly can't.
Speaker 6 (01:36):
I have no sitting read or as we're with this
little tool that it uses, you know, you know he could,
he could work some magic for you.
Speaker 7 (01:44):
So today we have rise Eyes.
Speaker 6 (01:48):
I had to say it, like Palpatine, Rise of the
Old Master, Season one, episode five. We will get into
some initial thoughts. Are some really cool guest stars in
this one. I thought this was a really cool story
that really shows the growth of these characters and how
they're getting more invested in each other and how we
as an audience getting more invested in them as well.
If I have the blessing of you all, I can
do my little recap. But I got to wait for
(02:09):
the magic words, you know, because otherwise it just can't happen.
Speaker 7 (02:11):
Launch. I love to all.
Speaker 6 (02:16):
Right, here we go, Hi above the thought. That's right,
I'm just kidding. That was my Tom Kaine tribute to
Clone Wars. I'm not going to do the whole thing
like that because that would be I feel like disrepract
of the Tom Mister Tom Kane. We love ourselves from
Tom Kane. All right, here we go, Hi above the thought.
Ezra is Jedi training like he's Luke Skywalker on Dagobab,
pulling off a handstand on top of a ghost that
would make Michael J. Fox's character and team will prout,
and Kane says true to the Dagaba theme by quoting
(02:37):
the Wise Master Yoda, telling him do or do not
there is no try. However, Ezra is more confused by
the quote than inspired, and after a missap with lightstaber training,
Kanan tells Ezra he lacks focus, and he says, folks
a lot in this episode, by the way, Well we'll
get into that. Ezra basically gives Kane to the Miagi treatment,
telling him there's no such thing as a bad student,
only a bad teacher. Turns out, Jedi training isn't what
(02:58):
either of them expected, but all of that is set
aside when gall Travis, the only member of the Imperial
Senate willing to speak out against the Empire, and it
sounds a lot like data on Star Trek the next generation.
We'll get into that too. Gall reports on the Hollow
Neet that Master Luminara is alive and being kept in
a prison in the Stigen System. Canaan says they cannot
pass up a chance the finder and even says Master
(03:19):
Luminar will make a better teacher for Ezra, which understandably
hurts the feelings of the young Padawan. The Ghost Crew
aren't with the termination, and some thermal detonators is able
to infiltrate the seemingly impenetrable Imperial prison, but it turns
out Master Luminara isn't actually there and this is all
at trap set by the Inquisitor. Despite being a bit
out match and Cogs being down, the gang finds a
(03:40):
way to escape the clutches of the Inquisitor with a
little help from Hara and the Fleet of Activities. With
Master Luminar confirmed and not be alive, Ezra tells Canaan
he's letting him off the hook as his master, but
in a very you got mail I wanted to be
so bad sort of moment, it turns out these toured
destined to be Master and Padawan and we close out
this episode with some light sayer practice that mirrors the
(04:01):
look of a father playing baseball with his son, a
moment that would surely draw a lot of owz from
a live studio audience if this were a multi camera
family sitcom. And that is our recap of season one,
episode five, Rise at the Old.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Masters, Well, well that was a great recap.
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Thank you, h Impenetrable impis five times. I was like,
I practiced that a few times before this recording. I
appreciate it. I appreciate it.
Speaker 7 (04:32):
Thank I feel so validated. Thank you.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Uh.
Speaker 6 (04:36):
Initial thoughts everybody after watching this, what are y'all thinking?
Speaker 5 (04:39):
Well, no, I was just gonna lead with the questions
so that the one thing I didn't I couldn't figure
out Master Luminar what what was that state that they
like they were dead? But then it was how did
they conjure? Was that just using the force to like
make them seem like they were alive in the so
(05:00):
for a second, Chip Hop PolyGram, Yeah, seriously, I was like,
are we at Coachella twenty sixteen?
Speaker 6 (05:08):
Rebels it at first, because.
Speaker 4 (05:11):
Hey, it was a real mind game for me. I
was trying to figure all of it out myself.
Speaker 6 (05:18):
Maybe Jc'll know when we get to our fact check.
Maybe j C'll know and uh or maybe one of
our listeners will know and they can help us out.
It seemed like they were able to like harness her consciousness,
and it would have to be used in the dark
side of the forest to be able to do that,
because even the inquisitor talks about like this was a
way to lure out the other Jedi, and he clearly
went to the Jedi temple got a lot of intel.
(05:40):
So that's my educated hypothesis of how he did it,
because I wasn't quite sure either.
Speaker 7 (05:47):
To be completely honest, that makes me show a bit better.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
JC, you have like half an hour. Yes, this information
I love in this episode. I love Canaan's bad asy
are we allowed to say that on this podcast?
Speaker 4 (06:01):
I just did?
Speaker 1 (06:02):
Maybe yeah, Okay, she's still bad in this episode.
Speaker 3 (06:05):
I mean, he's a boat in every episode, but really
this episode he's like Also, it reminded me how similar
Freddy is to Canaan, and it's like sort of authoritative
authoritain it has a negative connotation, maybe not authortit, but
he's like he he is everyone's big bro, and he
is like the sort of protector and he you know,
(06:29):
is quite I don't know it's authoritat of the wrong word.
Speaker 1 (06:32):
I don't mean it to be a bad things.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
It like just reminded me of you know, I haven't
gotten to work with Freddy in a while, and I.
Speaker 1 (06:38):
Was like, oh, big bro, you know Space Bros. Great bad.
I suppose he.
Speaker 6 (06:43):
Is a very take charge kind of guy, and he'll
he very much willingly takes that role like he likes
to be the one that kind of lead the charge.
And you see that in Kanaan. You see that in
a lot of Freddy's spill out into Canaan in this episode.
Back to your point to you, because and you're also
getting a glimpse of his past life that we don't
know a lot about. If you've seen Clone Wars, then
you're like, you know who Mech Luminari is. But if
(07:05):
you're only watching Rebels and you're not as familiar, that's
like a bit of a mystery box. Which is why
I love these animated series so much. Because in just
Star Wars in general, even from episode four, the opening
shot is layst Ship being tracked down, it's already part
of a bigger story. And this kind of filling in
the blanks of where Canaan came from in this part
of his personality where he's on a mission, like he's
(07:26):
really like and he's fearing out all the tricks. That
the first time that we see Canaan use the Jedi
mind trick. It's the first time as I ever see
he's like, whoa check with some of that stuff right there.
So I like that where they treat it as if
they are gonna make sure that fans of the Star
Wars are going to like be heard and like service
to But if you've never seen Star Wars, it's a
(07:49):
great introduction to like what the force is. And even
jac can fact checks on this. I think this is
the first time we get specifics on like the mechanics
of a lightsaber where you can adjust the height. I
don't recall ever seeing that mentioned.
Speaker 4 (08:01):
I don't remember that.
Speaker 1 (08:03):
I am I crazy? Or does he call it a
laser sword to it?
Speaker 7 (08:07):
Does?
Speaker 2 (08:08):
What is that?
Speaker 1 (08:10):
Should I know this?
Speaker 3 (08:11):
Should I be familiar with why he's calling it a
laser sword instead of a lightsaber?
Speaker 2 (08:15):
What's up with that?
Speaker 5 (08:17):
Uh?
Speaker 6 (08:18):
My only weird theory on that it is probably and
it's probably not it. I just remember there's an episode
of Muppet Babies where they're talking about no no, I'm
would be.
Speaker 7 (08:27):
Like Star Wars because they have laser swords.
Speaker 6 (08:29):
So maybe Canaan saw an old episode Babies.
Speaker 7 (08:34):
He's like, yeah, a laser sword. I kind of like that.
Speaker 5 (08:36):
Yeah, I feel like in our audition sides, I could
be wrong, it called them laser swords and.
Speaker 3 (08:43):
Called it a Sun's sword he talks about.
Speaker 1 (08:47):
For anyone who hasn't heard this.
Speaker 3 (08:48):
Story before, for can I can I just go on
a bit of a point engineer. So a lot of
you listening might have heard us talk about like our
basically are origins or.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
We took like our audition process process.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Seeds, which were very similar, I think because like none
of us knew, none of us had any clue what
we were auditioning for, because of course it was Star
Wars Rebels at the time was called the code name
for the show was called Wolf. For those of you
who know about Dave Filoni, you'll understand why. And you know, like,
(09:24):
I had no idea, Taylor, I don't think you had
any idea.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
You thought it was what do you think it was?
Speaker 2 (09:30):
I thought it was Jungle Book you were auditioning for.
I was like, got this on.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
And then Vanessa, I think you have also said that
you didn't know, or else you probably would have had
a heart attack.
Speaker 4 (09:44):
No, I wouldn't have been able to speak English. I
just project Star Wars onto everything. So conveniently it was
a hit or a good hit for this audition, right right.
Speaker 3 (09:55):
But so so like the three of us and Steve
Bloom did not know. And Freddy swears up and down
that he knew that he was auditioning for Star Wars
and that he was the character was a Jedi because
also I guess they were talking about like Taylor maybe
you'll remember, but like energy and he was like, that's
the horse. And then there was a mention of a
(10:17):
Sun's sword. He was like, that's a lightsaber. So Freddie,
out of all five of us, swears that he he
did know.
Speaker 1 (10:25):
Maybe he was using the force.
Speaker 5 (10:27):
If I knew what I know now about Star Wars,
I think I would have. From the sides, they like
as much as they were obscure, because they do this
with every project that's sort of big ip, like any
Marvel things that you read for a lot of DC
things you read for. They like give you dummy sides,
and so you'll go in with casting hector and like
read just sort of fake sides that are similar enough
(10:49):
to the character. And I feel like these were closer
than a lot of dummy sides.
Speaker 2 (10:53):
Now that I know, you know what I mean. Yeah, yea,
I thought it was jungle Book.
Speaker 6 (11:00):
In a way helped you though, Like not knowing because
you were just like free to approach it the way
you wanted to approach it. Or that's just because that's
interesting to me that you really didn't know and you
just kind of went about it as if it's just
whatever's in front of you.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
It was probably helpful for Vanessa because she would have
been catatonic had she known.
Speaker 4 (11:18):
Definitely, Yeah, it was helpful for me.
Speaker 3 (11:22):
You know.
Speaker 4 (11:22):
I was really struck by the number of specter mentions
Schacter five sect four, So, I mean in our introductions,
I was reminded of, like, my gosh, we really did
a lot of spectering in this particular episode. I mean,
obviously we were on a mission and I was emanating
a mating call to you know, these crazy flying creatures
are they mynox or I guess cativities forgive, forgive, you know,
(11:48):
but that was pretty hilarious. But this is the very
famous episode where Jason Isaacs came in and built the
miniature golf course that he found in the closet that
we had not found in this many episodes. And oh yeah,
well we at C two e two last year we
told this story. I mean, and I've told it a
(12:09):
couple times. But Jason came in, Oh look, and he
found this in the closet and he set up like
a whole golf course and we were like, oh wow,
my man's making himself at home. And we didn't mind.
I thought it was awesome, but it was very cat
and mouse the way he would like hit the ball
and then you might want to pay attention to this one.
And then I could have sworn Freddy was going to
(12:31):
kill this guy, because you know, like this is a
serious job. How dare you come in here and this
and that? But he said at C two e two
that he didn't care. But I was like, the vibe
was that Daddy could go buck at any minute here,
and so it increased the tension of the inquisitor doing
his inquisitoring. And then of course Brett Speiner gol Travis
(12:55):
was telling all these backstage stories with the camera uh
on him because we we had, you know, cameras in
our faces the entire time, and we all were like me,
but this was an interesting episode.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
You have such a good memory.
Speaker 3 (13:12):
I do, I very very vividly remember the miniature golf
because guys, whoever you know, for those of you who
are listening, you have to understand, like, we recorded in
the same.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
Studio for all four.
Speaker 3 (13:25):
Seasons, and so we were like by this point very
familiar with the space.
Speaker 1 (13:30):
And then we have Jason Isaac's.
Speaker 3 (13:33):
Come join us for this episode and he just walks
right in and goes to this closet.
Speaker 1 (13:38):
In the corner that none of us had probably ever
even noticed, opens it up. There's a little many many.
Speaker 3 (13:43):
Golf like set up sets it up, starts to play
and we're like, yeah, it was like a little tuk
but situation and Lord Blessing because he was just you
don't have a great time, and we were all, I
loved it.
Speaker 7 (13:57):
How about that?
Speaker 5 (13:59):
And then we used it the rest of the show.
It's your classic like office putting game. My buddy I
did it yesterday actually at my buddy's place. Like if
I feel like every college dorm had one for a
period of time.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Yeah, but it added to the scene, didn't you think that?
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Absolutely? Yeah, you're right about the specter thing.
Speaker 5 (14:18):
I realized in this episode, like piggybacking on that that
this is maybe all of Star Wars, but this is
very like war like, like they have to call in
specter this then okay do this and grenades. I didn't
realize we even had a single grenade, And I now
I've seen like twenty like there's always grenades.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
Maybe because when you're.
Speaker 5 (14:37):
Playing that you're not but yeah, there's always a grenade,
and it felt I didn't realize how much like war
it was. Here's the mission, we're going to go in.
We're gonna we're gonna go in. We have to be
stealth and come out with this retrieval whatever it might be.
Speaker 2 (14:55):
And so I've been I've been having fun watching that.
Speaker 8 (14:59):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (15:00):
Offs my favorite was the elevator scene. I felt like
that so captures the humor of Star Wars when you're like,
can't believe this is going to work out whatever, and
he's like I'm right here and we know, like we know.
Speaker 8 (15:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (15:13):
That was so super Star Wars to me, like in
the midst of like all this action, you know, you know,
battle like whatever, and then there's like this little bit
of levity in an elevator.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
I was like, oh, that's Star Wars right there in
a nutshell.
Speaker 6 (15:28):
I remember when I first saw that scene. That reminded
me that that weird wolver Orine Origins movie, which we
don't have to get into, but there's that elevator scene,
which I think is the best scene in the movie,
where you know, Ryan Reynolds, He's like, oh great, I'm
in this elevator with these guys on high protein diet
like that's It was that kind of vibe with so good.
Oh hey there, Yeah, I'm Ryan Reynolds. I'm just hearing
(15:49):
that Potter rebellion and get some mobile. That's her first
ad read.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
I guess about what do you think about Wrexham?
Speaker 6 (15:57):
Ryan, Well, here's the thing, Taylor, I'm just like Wrexham
and football and all sports and state.
Speaker 7 (16:05):
I don't know. I just hope we get another Emmy.
Speaker 4 (16:07):
That's thank you very much, Ry well done.
Speaker 7 (16:12):
Don't forget to get Aviation Gin.
Speaker 8 (16:13):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Right, what other brand can't we throw out there?
Speaker 6 (16:17):
I'm sure, I'm sure there's infinite when it comes to right,
with the grenades things. I think again, I'm throwing some
stuff to JC. I remember we in Star Wars you
would see thermal detonators and the thread of them going off,
but we never really saw them go off. Is this
the first time we see them in any form? Or
maybe Clone? I'm sure Clone Wars did it too, but
(16:38):
it was very rare the you saw them go off,
other than like the video games. And so I thought
the fact that we had three of them go off
and this one I'm like, okay, like and then finally
in The Mandalorian they showed it in live action. So
I always thought, like thermal detonators. To me, there was
always like, oh, we're gonna do it, like in Return
to the Jedi like kind of pulls back but doesn't
do it. I remember watching like, oh wait, we actually
see the thermal detonators go off.
Speaker 7 (16:59):
This is so cool.
Speaker 6 (17:00):
So it's like little details like that are such payoffs for.
Speaker 1 (17:03):
We just need a man the Laurie to take care
of business.
Speaker 6 (17:06):
We just need Sabine that that's really what we need.
Which Sabine kicks a major button this episode because we
get hints of it of like we see the tech
side of her the intellect and the artist artistry side
of Sabine and this is where she's really sprung more
into action. And you know you see that. Okay, clearly
she could hold her own on Cobra Kai at the
Ald Valley push came to shove. There's the there's the
(17:29):
karate Kid reference again.
Speaker 2 (17:31):
And about Cobra Kai, what about Freddy clothes line? What
was that move? Like, that's my favorite removes the fart
like force the clothesline. I was going to bring that
up for you. John felt karate kid like.
Speaker 6 (17:43):
It felt that And as anyone may or may not know,
Freddy used to write for w WE like he wrestling,
So I feel like it was a mix of Karate
Kid and and pro wrestling, and all we needed.
Speaker 7 (17:55):
Was Jim Rustling.
Speaker 6 (17:55):
Oh my god, look what Cainan just yeah, and that
was a really great thing. So that that backstory of
Jason ISAA explain mini golf much this may of Freddy
potentially I won't speak on his behalf. Yeah, I agree
that you felt that there was something there. I mean,
(18:16):
obviously Canaan his heartbroke and that Luminara is not alive
because this was like a piece of his past that like,
oh maybe like there's just somebody can latch onto, and
then it's just just as quickly taken away. And then
he's kind of out matched by this guy inquisitor, like
he's not messing around, and he's got this rotating lightsabers.
Even even I was just like does yours do that?
Speaker 7 (18:36):
He's like no, no, he's like got a better.
Speaker 4 (18:39):
Light here than That's my other favorite line.
Speaker 3 (18:43):
Did that have a uh a technical term like the
boomerang double edged double sided lightsaber?
Speaker 2 (18:50):
Now it does double edged.
Speaker 1 (18:56):
Lightsaber? Yeah, yeah, that thing is uh it. It just
encouraged me about this miniature golf thing. Well, one thing,
I Vanessa, you and I may disagree.
Speaker 3 (19:07):
I don't actually think Freddy cared about the miniature golf because.
Speaker 1 (19:11):
You know, I think he was just in the zone
and you know, focused.
Speaker 3 (19:14):
On but but yeah, you know, like it's totally possible.
Speaker 1 (19:18):
But also I was just thinking it really does add.
Speaker 3 (19:23):
To the sort of like the inquisitor just sort of
like playing with us, messing with us, manipulating us, because
it was the juxtaposition of him like sort of putting
in between lines and then just going into this like
very intimidating, very you know, scary character of the inquisitor.
Speaker 1 (19:45):
It was sort of like all kind of very fitting.
Speaker 4 (19:47):
I thought, well, my guess is that if Freddy said
he wasn't pissed, he definitely wasn't. Yeah, but I do
think that it bothered Ca And I think I was
picking up on ooh, Daddy's gonna blow. And he's such
a great actor that in that moment, I think I was,
(20:09):
you know, I'm always feeding people bananas and like if
someone has a tom tom ache or whatever the hell
I'm doing, Like, I'm always I'm on it, you know,
what do you need? And I've sensed he was getting
like mega irritated, But I don't think Freddy was. But
I think the cat and mouse, like you're saying, it
served the scene well for him to like just play
a little. I know that Freddy is a consummate professional
(20:31):
and he's very clear about, you know, being on time,
and he has all these really wonderful professional standards that
I watched him uphold in his career and also with us,
and so I wasn't sure if this putt putt might
fall into your disrespecting our sacred time. You know, we're
(20:53):
on the clock here. I think my general caretaking nature
probably was hyper sensitive to like Jason, you might wanna
you know, so that that's just my crisis aversion.
Speaker 6 (21:06):
You are very much an EmPATH in USA, you are
very much that, so that totally trap well.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
But I do think that it was it was the
scene and not not the actual individual, and that's what
a great actor is. It felt very real to me,
like kitten might kill this guy, you know. But I
also loved Tailor when he says ooh about the dog
(21:31):
side and you're like, never heard of it. He's coming
at you with like a chainsaw, you know, and you're
just like never heard of it, Like you're the Moxie
the the oh. I just love your character so much,
and your hair looks sensational. It's like a shade of
black blue and Tia your hair as well. I was
(21:51):
just like, oh, the orange though around the blue it's
just chef's kiss. So really good hair.
Speaker 1 (21:57):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (21:58):
I mean, I had nothing to do with it, but
I also appreciate their the good hair on the show.
I will say, speaking of Moxie, I really like help
at the beginning of this. I'm sorry to go jump
back to the beginning, but you're like about to fall,
you ass about to fall to a death, and he
seems to be in through the windshield and he's just like,
(22:18):
what's up.
Speaker 7 (22:20):
Your ress?
Speaker 3 (22:21):
You've still got time to like throw a little throw
little her way just in case.
Speaker 5 (22:26):
You know, there are and I think I mentioned this
last episode there are literally and maybe it just comes
from drawing. The parallel of that age was sitcom age
in my head, like actually like sitcom beats, Like that
is so like how serious is death if he's about
to like wink at you know, I mean, like that's insane.
But also then when Zeb grabs him and there or
(22:47):
Hara opens the door and Zeb grabs him and Chopper
comes down, spins the last one and throws it like
they did not need to go show it hit a
loath cat, but they do, And that to me, like
it's just the joy of like they're still just kind
of having fun message around like that is a very
very sick on beat to me.
Speaker 1 (23:07):
Totally our first love cat citing I.
Speaker 7 (23:10):
Was about to ask you, I think so.
Speaker 4 (23:12):
I think it may be. Yeah, that was adorable. Chopper
really went at it like yeah, but you know, the
other thing Canan's character is is so filled with doubt,
and I see Ezra take it personally, but the inquisitor
really just stuck the knife in the wound where you know,
saying like, oh, has he taught you nothing? I mean,
(23:34):
there are ways that this scene was crafted to really
just cut deeply into his fear. So it was very
gratifying at the end of it for you two to
come together and adorable that you're like, I don't want
the best one, not that you're the worst. It was
so sweet to see them come together. And I had
(23:56):
all the like mega og Star Wars feels for the
last image where you know, he's throwing stuff at you.
It felt very much like a new hope to me
or tattooinash or something. It just I had all the
goosebumps at that point. So, in other words, the way
it was constructed, the irritant of the inquisitor and then
(24:17):
you guys coming together in the end was like, oh,
I was really rooting for that by the time we
got there, and you know, again, hats off to the creators.
It really just was so powerful.
Speaker 6 (24:30):
Yeah, I wrote him on notes that Canaan like we
get a glimpse of his like imposter syndrome. Because up
to this point he's so put together. But then and
then we feel for Ezra when he's like, well, Master
Luminard be a better teacher. And it's not that he
doesn't want to be Ezra's master, it's like he feels
he's not worthy of that, and so he wants somebody
like Master Luminar who does have this reputation and is
(24:51):
carries the title of master, whereas was like, no, it's like,
it's not about titles to me. It's like there's something
here and I want to learn from you, so which
I love that you brought up deadlines I wrote in
my notes to like I don't want the best teacher,
I want you, and then you'd just like no, wait, wait, wait,
hold on, let me bring that back. And uh, I
think this is the first mention of Canaan's master as well. Yeah,
(25:13):
Dipa Billiba And I thought so this when I first
saw this back in twenty fourteen and then rewatching it now.
I love the part where and the inquisitor recognizes who
Canaan was trained by, because as someone like I trained
in martial arts my whole life, and I believe everyone.
Speaker 7 (25:29):
Here has to some degree too. If I'm not mistaken.
Speaker 6 (25:32):
That is a real thing, like you won't know who
someone trained for their what style they're in, based on
how they come at you. And I thought that tiny
detail which is never really explained, like why he knows,
but that's a real thing with like martial arts and
especially obviously the Jedi arts and the Force, where it
was like, oh, I know who you trained with, I
know your style. I thought that was really cool, and
(25:54):
also like the sense of danger of Okay, who the
f are we up against? If this person knows all
about Kane and Kanan knows nothing about this guy, so
it's really cool and set in the stage of what's
going to be the enemy arc, if you will, of
season one, it was.
Speaker 1 (26:10):
Like a little crouching Tiger hitting dragon moment.
Speaker 2 (26:13):
Yeah, like.
Speaker 3 (26:16):
The bad guys immediately able to identify who this person
was trained under.
Speaker 1 (26:22):
It's one of my favorite movies.
Speaker 3 (26:23):
So I can talk about that movie like all day long,
but we won't do that on this podcast.
Speaker 7 (26:28):
Yeah, we'll get there a bonus episode, yeah.
Speaker 6 (26:31):
Because I mean there's so much influence of those movies
to Star Wars as we know, so it's all relevant.
Speaker 7 (26:36):
We'll get there. I would love to join that deep
die with you.
Speaker 4 (26:39):
I also loved how your character figured out that they
were that it was a trap, like you, Ezra was
trying to let you know, and you figured it out
on your own, and how smarted the elevator. I loved
seeing the teamwork that existed, whether or not you could
speak on the comms or not. That was really cool
(27:00):
to learn, Like, oh, this group is no joke, Like
you mess with them, you've got the power of zeb
but you're you, you you killed that. I loved. I
loved to see that.
Speaker 1 (27:11):
Yeah, it was fun.
Speaker 3 (27:12):
I was like, oh, yeah, she's she's so I mean,
it's like, what I love about her most is that,
you know, when we start to show to being as sixteen,
right and Ezra as fourteen presumably, and even at such
a young age, she is so confident and savvy and
capable and like fearless, which I just think is I'm
(27:37):
I feel so honored to get to like play a
character who I am such a fan of, and you know,
I think is kind of an amazing role model for
little kids like that, like you can be all the things,
like you can be an artist and be interested in
artistic expression and also being well, maybe don't be a
munition's expert, little kids, but you know something.
Speaker 1 (28:00):
Wildly different, and yet you can be all of those things.
It's just like a complex.
Speaker 3 (28:07):
Character that has is like a multi faceted whole person,
even in such a young age.
Speaker 5 (28:13):
Yeah, you start seeing real depth of the characters. And
I know we were saying this earlier, but circling background, Like,
I thought it was really cool to see the vulnerability
from Freddy's gipt from Canaan, like it, it's really sweet
and you side with him a lot, and you get
the depth that I think when we go to these
conventions and we talk to people watch the show, what
I hear most often what people connect to is the
(28:34):
depth of the characters and to what you're saying to you, Like,
you really get a lot of that through the writing
and the performance of each character. It's not as surface
level as.
Speaker 2 (28:46):
It may seem. I don't know at first.
Speaker 3 (28:48):
Yeah, no, you're right, I mean, like the it's just
the complexity of each of these characters, right, Like, this
is the first time we see Canaan.
Speaker 1 (28:57):
You know Canaan's vulnerability, and.
Speaker 3 (28:59):
At first you're like, well, A first, I was like,
what a jerk? Why is he trying to pass off,
you know, like pawd off his potential padawan onto this
other SHEDI And then you realize it's not that he
wants to it so that he feels like he can't
do for Ezra what she could do for Ezra. And
then he like maybe has some self doubt that we
(29:19):
would have never known beforehand.
Speaker 5 (29:21):
And isn't that such a parallel to life, Like you
hope that most adults understand this, that when someone is
acting out like that, it's usually from insecurity or doubt,
and that's all of us as humans. But his kids
being able to see this through a story that is
foreign and not directly just didactic saying, hey, when someone
(29:41):
acts like this, they're probably insecure. They're probably doubting themselves.
You see it in a real way that it comes
around full circle. Then you're like, oh, no, he would
love nothing more than to train this kid. He's just
a little unsure and he's feeling a little less than
for what just happened with this inquisitor. And I think
as a kid, you you know that you pick up
on it. At least I remember being young being like, Okay,
(30:03):
this must mean something, And I think that's a beautiful
parallel for younger people watching this show is you get
lessons about life in psychology in a way as well, but.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Wrapped up into like a fun, excite exactly episode where
it's not just like beating you over the head with it,
but hopefully you come away with like, Okay, wait a minute,
I can like ruminate on that for a minute and
hopefully take something away from it that wasn't just like
pure entertainment.
Speaker 1 (30:29):
Yeah, that's just good storytelling, y'all.
Speaker 5 (30:31):
That's good storyteking. Sometimes when they're jerk, they're not really
a jerk, they're just a little scared.
Speaker 1 (30:36):
I'm telling you, sweet Taylor Spiritue.
Speaker 2 (30:40):
It's true. I feel like you have to look at
people in life like that a bit.
Speaker 1 (30:44):
That's a really good life lesson right there. We should
all take something away from this.
Speaker 6 (30:49):
Yeah, we need like the NBC more, you know, shooting
star for that tailor. That's like our pot of rebelling PSAs.
We're going to do a little social clips for that
and a fun little thing I wrote my notes as well.
Ezra says, it's a trap again. So this is two
times in the series so far. I'm going to start
an unofficial tally it's a trap. So I think this
is only further validating that this is an Ezra line.
(31:11):
I know later on lay I said it twice, I
believe in Empire and then Acbar, but they all got
it from Ezra.
Speaker 7 (31:18):
Azra did it first, So that's going.
Speaker 2 (31:19):
To be jac is going to shut it down and
say that it was.
Speaker 7 (31:26):
I hope so trying. I'm trying to give them a
little bit of with it.
Speaker 6 (31:30):
And then the stging system I believe has ties to
Darth Maul. Again, jac kN fact check is on this,
but when I heard that, I think Darth Maul. I
think it was like in the comic books. And as
we know, we'll get there, we won't get too deep
into that, and our buddy Sam where will eventually come
on the pod as well. But one thing, Look, if
you've seen the show, you know we're talking about. This
(31:51):
show was so great about wrapping up a lot of
those lingering storylines are kind of ones that we were sure, like,
weren't sure where they went, and this show does such
a beautiful thing with that. So that when I heard stigy,
I'm like, oh, it just makes me wonder was this
a subtle hint that we are going to see em
all again. So I don't know, I just wanted to
throw that out there, like watching it again and knowing
(32:13):
how where it ends up. I couldn't help them. My
ADHD brain couldn't help but go there and be like,
wait a minute, was that like, because it could have
been any system, Like, it didn't have to be that.
Speaker 7 (32:23):
So that's that's the way my brain was working.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
But it's all just like.
Speaker 3 (32:26):
It's all like you were saying at the top of
the podcast that like, are there are little gifts for
a diehard Star Wars fans and then hopefully it's just
a great story and great characters and great flat lines
for new you know, those who are new to Star
Wars and watching Star Wars Rebels as their first sort
(32:48):
of avenue.
Speaker 1 (32:48):
Into Star Wars.
Speaker 3 (32:50):
But like right at the top of the episode, you know,
he Kanan references master Yoda and that he never understood
it when master Yoda's and we're like, wait, what Caitaan
new master Yoda? Like it's just like if you don't
know anything, that line is like no harm, no foul,
But if you know, it's like such a little treat right,
(33:13):
Like it's such a little like, oh wait a second,
hold on, world's colliding, world's merging.
Speaker 1 (33:17):
It's cool.
Speaker 2 (33:17):
It's again good.
Speaker 1 (33:19):
Story telling you all.
Speaker 7 (33:20):
And I love that.
Speaker 6 (33:21):
I was just like, wait, how can I do something
if I don't try? And it's like, yeah, wait a minute.
And then even and I love that. I feel like
the low hanging fruit way to go about that would
make like, no, what means this in this? But Kane's like, well, actually,
I was always kind of confused by that one. It's cute, sweet,
and then you make it gets in our head too,
(33:43):
like wait, wait, hold on, because when Yoda says it,
and then when it's incompanied by the iconic and you
know John Williams' score, you know, with the set of
Dagoon Empire, you're not going to question it. But then
so it's just funny that oh wait a minute, wait
does that make sense though? But then they do kind
of bring it back full circle at the end where
(34:03):
Kane is like, I'm not gonna try, I'm just gonna
be your teacher. I'm gonna be your master, and so
like they're saying that they understand it without saying they
understand it. It's again good writing, good storytelling and Tia
you allude to earlier, like we don't have to beat
the audience over the head with it.
Speaker 7 (34:18):
Audiences are very smart.
Speaker 6 (34:19):
I think any creator would benefit in knowing that, like
a lot of times, we're going to figure stuff out.
I mean, don't leave us completely in the dark. But
if you drop enough bread crumbs, they're gonna follow the
bread crumbstor where you need to go. And the show
certainly drops a lot of great bread crumbs. And you know,
you walk away with all these episodes that are so
like self contained but at the same time it's all
(34:41):
part of a bigger story, but you walk away with
every single one very very satisfied, but wanting more. So
it felt like like doing this rewatch. I feel like
I'm rewatch watching it for the first time all over again.
Speaker 4 (34:54):
Yeah I don't Yeah, good, go go. I don't remember
Zeed hating you so much. He was so hard on you,
like he means it's hard to train you. It's like,
whoa easy, my man.
Speaker 7 (35:05):
Especially in the last episode. I thoughty'all were cool. You still.
Speaker 5 (35:09):
Life. It feels very brotherly though, because I would say
if there's a person I love most, it would be
my brother, and at the same time, we're probably harder
on each other. Like you heard or read the dialogue
what we say to each other, you'd be like.
Speaker 2 (35:23):
What, but it's not real.
Speaker 4 (35:27):
Yeah, I didn't remember him being so hard on you.
As it struck me this time.
Speaker 5 (35:32):
The question that like is it always raised with me.
I'm like, okay, the force. I love the force? What
exactly are the parameters of it? And when Ezra falls
off the ship and I was like, wait, I don't
remember this, just like, how.
Speaker 2 (35:47):
Was this gonna happen? I thought?
Speaker 5 (35:48):
I thought like supergol or something was getting and I
was like, how did that work?
Speaker 2 (35:52):
I was like, can you fly with the force?
Speaker 5 (35:54):
He could grab him that far down and pull him
back up.
Speaker 3 (36:00):
Thats like you want parameters.
Speaker 5 (36:05):
I'm like, I'm like, what cannot be done? It was
like Matilda when you watch Matilda when you're young, like, okay,
what exactly can she do?
Speaker 2 (36:13):
And what can't she do? But I guess what.
Speaker 5 (36:16):
Depending on how strong you are a the force, you
can extensibly do anything, and you have.
Speaker 6 (36:19):
To have your eyes closed apparently, yeah, exactly to do
it because your eyes can deceive you, young one, So.
Speaker 1 (36:27):
You have to trust in the forest. Have you learned nothing?
Speaker 5 (36:30):
Yes, I'm trying to I'm trying to go back to
that mindset that Ezra was in season one, and I'm skeptical.
I'm skeptical. I like how everyone ELSEO tries to coax.
Well that foreshadows down the line. But like even in
the middle of a battle, uh, the Inquizords like, come on,
come to the dark set.
Speaker 7 (36:48):
Start me up, all right, everybody?
Speaker 6 (36:53):
So if there's not anything else, I think for coming
up on our favorite part of the program. So it
is time, per fect check with our guy jac What
do you got for us today?
Speaker 8 (37:03):
Okay, if you are a fan of Luminara and dully,
we're going to do a little bio here.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
Let's go.
Speaker 8 (37:11):
So Luminar was imprisoned on the Sigean Prime system. The
popular belief was that Luminar was killed on Kashik during
Order sixty six. She was taken prisoner held by the Empire.
She was actually killed in her cell, apparently by the
Grand Inquisitor, who mummified her remains. And so what where
(37:34):
we come up on this version of Luminara In here
it is a hologram, and what Canaan is doing is
sensing the mummified remains of Luminara, who was killed somewhere
between Order sixty six and Star Wars Rebels Rise of
the Old Masters. Here Luminar's first appearances in Star Wars
(37:55):
episode two, and Vanessa mentioned we get some backstory on
Luminara in Tales of the Jedi. One of the thoughts
on Tales of the Jedi and why they brought that
up is to contrast the difference between the choices that
her padawan Barris makes with joining the Inquisitors versus Luminara
(38:19):
was apparently given the same choice and chose to die
with the Republic rather than join the Inquisitors and prolong
her own life, which is the choice that Barris ends
up making in Tales of the Jedi. So there you go.
Now you know everything about Luminara. Undoui Tia had mentioned
laser sword. They referred to it as a laser sword.
I just wanted to point out in Star Wars episode one,
(38:41):
Anakin refers to Qui Gon's lightsaber as a laser sword
when they're when he asks him if he's a Jedi.
So that was the first canonical way of describing a
lightsaber as a laser sword. And then of course, Luke Skywalker,
I think, says the same thing in Last Jedi as well,
to it as a laser sword. When he's talking to
(39:02):
right lightsaber changing lengths, this is referred to as a
dual phase lightsaber. The first time it was referred to
as a dual phase lightsabers in the Kevin J. Anderson
book Dark Apprentice, which came out in like nineteen ninety
four ninety five. I think the character Kip Duran had
(39:23):
built a lightsaber that was dual phase with the help
of ancient Sith lord x Arkun. But that's a whole other, long,
long comic book backstory there. But I think the first
time it ever happened where they were as a lightsaber
changing length was in the nineteen seventy eight first Expanded
(39:46):
Universe novel which was called Splinter of the Mind's Eye
by Alan Dean Foster that came out in between A
New Hope and Empire Strikes Back. I believe Darth Vader's
lightsaber can do it in that book. So while this
is the first probably canonical appearance of that, it was
set up in Star Wars Legends all the way back
(40:07):
before Empire Strikes Back. Also fun trivia tidbit when you're
talking Star Wars with your friends. Splinter of the Mind's
Eye is the first time they mentioned Kyber Crystal at all,
which was later gone has gone on to be you know,
the Death Star and all the Lightsabers and the planet
(40:28):
Ilum and all of that stuff. It all started in
nineteen seventy eight with Splinter of the Mind's Eye. Thermal detonator,
as far as I was able to devise, this is
the first time we see a thermal detonator explode in
canon or anything. Yeah, obviously in the video games it's
been happening forever. I know in the Super Star Wars games,
(40:50):
let's throwing thermal detonators all over the place, But this
is the first time in canon that we see one
actually explode. You guys mentioned the first Lothcat sighting It
is indeed this episode, so good memory there. And then John,
you mentioned Darth Maul about the Stigian system. Yes, it
did appear in a comic book about Darth Maul, Son
(41:13):
of Dafimir, episode issue one, which was released May twenty first,
twenty fourteen. So the comic book actually was referencing rebels,
not the other way around.
Speaker 7 (41:26):
That was amazing as all right, as usual.
Speaker 3 (41:29):
I would like to just believe and please Jac never
told me if I'm wrong that like Jac doesn't have
to look up.
Speaker 2 (41:35):
Any of this.
Speaker 3 (41:35):
It all is in his head and he just has
to like go into the vault and retrieve the facts
that we need for each particular episode.
Speaker 1 (41:44):
But like there's no googling. It just lives in his brain.
Speaker 8 (41:47):
There's I mean, ear muffs tea, but a lot of
I would say about half the I would say about
half the stuff I'm able to pull up and half
the stuff when it's like specific to an episode or
specific to a comic book issue, I have to like
kind of make sure that uh, like I know enough
(42:11):
to know what to look for to make sure that
I'm right and I don't show up and say something
that's going to get us flamed on the pot of
rebellion socials.
Speaker 7 (42:22):
We don't want to find those subreddit threads.
Speaker 2 (42:25):
But the fact is that the.
Speaker 1 (42:26):
Stuff is in there.
Speaker 3 (42:27):
You're just looking for like confirmation and fact, like you're
just making sure you're not like spreading any kind of misinformation.
Speaker 8 (42:34):
Well, and we're fact I'm fact checking live Like this
isn't recorded after we've done the episode and things, so
this is literally like as you guys finished talking, we're
jumping on and fact checking.
Speaker 1 (42:45):
So that is why it is so impressive.
Speaker 6 (42:49):
This was another incredible chat we had. I love deep
diving into this and Jac always blows our minds with
the fact check and I feel like smarter every time,
like man like don't add at me either. With the
Star Wars you everybody come on because I got Jac
as the body armor once everybody, Thank you for listening.

Speaker 1 (43:38):
You're not going to want to miss.

It, not at all. It's yes.
Speaker 6 (43:42):
