me back up on Sunday. So it was just like

in church, I was like four or five, and the

it was like when you seven, when you five years old,
when I was in the world, I didn't have a

then you can start singing a difference it makes when

but that's also the age that when you're trying to

once my uncle told me at fifteen, sing you'll last longer.

He was like, nobody wants to hear that anymore. So

that's what touches the heart. I'm not saying that rap doesn't,
but it's just something about a melody. It's just something

about tone. It's just something about that type of connection
that just hit different. So it's just like, yeah, something,
but now they don't really talk about love. They talk

that's crazy. I've never wrote a hate song in my life.

much from my uncle is just like now I understand

and slide on stage and the keyboar will be ready,

his approach to gospel music was totally was a completely

was something we had never seen before. The structure of it,

was like, so we're watching the band on this side.
You had a band corner, when the band when where
the band set up. There were eighty musicians from that
single sitting on the side like this, and then you
got the congregation watching the whole thing. You got the
singers all through the day. But it was ill. The

music was the phrases, but put together music rehearsals. Yeah,
I did the V I was. I was part of
the v I p Chuire Wednesday rehearsals that I used
to go to. People like it was almost like a concert.
He would come and have like a little bit of
Bible study and literally from like six pm two two
in the morning now would have school the next day.

He would write songs right there. He was like, all right, y'all,
gotta learn this right now. I was I'm gonna give
it to you know what, saying, awesome, gonna get this
so on up. He would literally write song on the spot.
And that's I learned so much from him and he
because he played, he would like make you go to
and they would go. It was like how did they know?
But he had that. He was the first person I
saw sing and not miss and I didn't. I don't

know how we can talk about We don't talk about

itself he did. Even if you're not obviously John p
Kids is amazing. But even if you're just a good
singer and you don't miss, that's that's still something very
special to prepare yourself to to honor your gift because

he'll get up there, and especially especially when he does

lot of that too, is like then I try to
think people come to his consoles just to see if

I never understood it till now because I never had
the audition. People just took their word for it. So
they took me to Guru's house. He used to live
like right and like Elmhurst, right between Queens and Long Island.

So my aunt lived in Queens. So I was like,
if I get this gig, then I can stay with
my aunt. And I wind up going singing his eyes
on the Sparrow and Gurgle's living room. He was like, so, yeah,
they're gonna call you tomorrow and we're gonna get you.
Do you have a passport? I was like no, but
my dad drove me up there from North Carolina. He's
always been my driver, not the fire in one time.

We'll talk about that later. But like I just always
I never had the really audition. All I had to
do was show up and I always got the job. Okay,
you did the whole United States and the whole and
then the overseas. So mind you, I'm just getting out
of high school and you getting paid, Yes, you get

real money to do this. And I was just like,
so I'm thinking, I'm just going for the experience. And
I was like, well, this is how much you're gonna
get paid this, And I was like, and tours that
are already established, so it wasn't like care of Yeah,
Like I'm like, for damn, this is more than I

get job, working a job or anything. Before you caught
this kid, I never had a job like. I've never
felt out an application in my life. I wanted to
feel out one because I was living on four break
and I wanted to work at Wendy's. But then I
was like, I'm not gonna be able to do that
because I used to breed everybody here. And one time, really, yeah,

I thought I was gonna get a job. How old
would you like a teenager because they made everybody else.
I was like sixteen seventeen. I was just like, you
know what, I like clothes. Listen, I'm tired of selling.
I say, I wasn't avoiding dope. I've seen something earlier

stopped taking crump with up money because he opened it
up and half of it was a dollar, half of
it was a twenty drug. Trust me. My stent with

jobs were I had. I wanted to get some clothes
during Christmas time, so I went and worked at the

I was working at Utrey. When you get the whole

used to make coves and deliver the mail and all
that stuff, right, and so I sent off I sent
off the first and one mixed blueprints. It is mixed.
It was I remember all the plans for the for

stuff I sent. I sent those off to to whoever
they ended up doing the deal with to get out.
I sent those off. That's like my claim to fame
my ship though. And he guy was from Maryland. So
I did that, and then I did that for like
about three months. And you know why I got fired?

one night, I want to sing at these and I
went and I signed up and they didn't ask me
for I d because the people I would go it
was always grown. I always always thought I was grown,
for like I always honed with grown people. And I said,

me softly, and I killed it. And then after that
people like, yo, you should do something. I was like, dag,
my uncle was right, but I was. This was after
I came off tour, so I was doing R and
B and if I used to feel so convicted, like,
oh my god, I'm hell here, I'm singing this secular music.
I'm a burn with the devil. I always thought I
was gonna burn with the devil. That's what kept me
from it. But then I realized I was like, wait,

people still love me, so I'm gonna do this. So
I had started working with like producers and stuff, writing
songs and referencing songs, and for some of my reasons,
some of my references got to Missy and I was
in the mall and Green Neck is mall, getting just
finished getting my nails, and that's when we had beepers.
So I had moved to New York. I was living

in Queens, so going down there in school and just
like going to open mics and just trying to make
a name for myself and Merlin Bob had yeah, well
ron ron was his um his uh his, he had
two assistance that So I remember getting a beeping whenever

said two on two. That meant money, child, that mean money.
So I called her back and he was like, Maryland,
want to speak to you, and I was like for real,
and so he was like, yeah, Missy um Elliot wants
you to call I'm like out of here, Missy don't

no freaking way. Hold on the second, I remember putting

the pay phone down because that's when the drug deals
had all the bag phones and them phone bills us

her number down. I called her right then and there,

a car phone. I was like, hey, what's up this

So I remember sitting in the studio and then all
of a sudden, like Whitney Houston walks and I'm like Jesus,

called yes, and I referenced it. Whitney like hugged me.
It was just like, you know, ahmost like she was
so hyped up. Then she made me go in the
booth for her and vocal produce it. I was like,

world that had all the church girls want to sing
secular music with some annointing. I'm standing in the booth

I'm nervous. She gave me a fisherman's friend, a fisherman's friends. Yeah,
how you ready at least in your mind your mind, yeah,
not knowing that there was really ain't for sables. But

lot of people wanted to harmonies because she comes from
that Joe to see. So we were stacking now you

sa we were stacking vocals. That's where we came from,

the stacking vocals days. So she taught me so much
because I didn't know studio work. I was. So that's
when I learned that, you know, outside singing live and
studio is totally different. I hate being the studio. I
feel closeterrophobic. I feel like my ideas don't come like
don't come to life. So I was glad that I
had her skeleton there and then I could take it
to next level because Hot Boys was just her and

then I sang with it. So now she let me
ring that church ad lives, which people you ain't gotta
do all that. Let me get busy where how long?

I was signed to a lecture. But it was just

like I was working with Missy. I was just like,

wanna did nothing. And all the songs that I was picking,

that's what I did to that. I was working with
Montell Jordan and them, so they would pick a songs.
I was like, I don't think them like, these songs
are great, but I don't think it's gonna translate too.

I had tattoos, gold teeth at the time, braids, so
I looked like a rapper, but I sang like a
church girl, so you feel me. I was trying to
blend those both worlds. So just like Missy taught me,
just like, just don't settle for nothing. Be who you are.
And that's how I about the gate. She was like,

me to show up to vocal radets. That's a word,

one day I think I filled in for I used

And I was like, you know, I will, But the
labels like no, because that will be a conflict, yea
competition and conflict. And yeah, that's what I learned. They
used to tell you know that I can't tell you

How imposed to take care of my family? So I

did radio because of that. And then when I got
pregnant with my daughter Heaven, that's when I was just
like THEA. Mitchem her and James Stevens. Yeah, like I

gave me my first afternoon drive show in Baltimore. It
was called X one O five seven. They had just
switched from like talk radio or sports radio to hip

hop and R and B. So mind you ninety two
Q had been there for years, so we were a
new black station coming into a market that you're at
least expected to make it because Baltimore, you don't like you.
We were at least expected because you were at least
expected to make it. Especially it was almost like remember
when Power Want to Fire started? Oh how ninety seven

being here, you ain't gonna last. Ninety years later we lasted.
So it's just like I was just like, look, I'm pregnant,
I don't feel like this is my first child, feel
like going on the road. And she was like okay,
and she said, if you listen to pay attention, you'll
have a number one show. I listened to. I paid
attention and I had a number one show against the
We beat the number one shows. That was in Maryland.

So after I had my daughter, I wanted to stay there,
but the label call was just like, yeah, let's talk.
You go back outside, y'all, And that's when I started. Um,
I did Meet the Girl next Door album, so I
did that whole album pregnant, So I was like, no
much pregnant recording a whole album remember Mike Michael was
in the studio. I was like walking from the studio

recorded and then just like the birth of my daughter,
I was like back out on the road, like a
couple of weeks later, and I remember John Peki called
me nice said, you're died from you together. Don't be
got out of weeks after six weeks. And I was
outside before that because I just I've never said, if

(01:00:52):
you realize, I've never sat down a day in my
life since I was fifteen, even before then, Like I
was doing that. Really, come on, let's talk about that though,
man ter, I gotta started, what are we doing? Think? Yeah?

So it was like I was every time I have
a kid, people like every time you put out an album,
you have a baby. I'm like, damn it, I gotta
stop this man. So it was like you know, once, yeah,
once my daughter she was born, and she was like
she's to this day, she's twenty years old. She's at fast.
So I was like, I just felt I could take
on the road. So she's been on tour and everything,
and they let her get her shots early because you know,

you posted to weight like eight weeks, but she had
teeth at like two months. Right at that two month
mark when they puposed to get this. So I was
just like we all siwe We was in Jamaica and
was like and my mom and daddy because I would
be like, I'm not hiring on nanny. I don't trust
people around my kids because of trauma that happened to
me when I was a child. So I was just like, yeah,

so my mom and dad used to travel a road
with me to the good stuff, and they were preachers,
so there was circles and prayers formed around us preachers
to yeah, my dad's a bishop both but he's the
cool money driver. Yeah. Yeah. I had to fire him
because he sleep one time and I was like, we
can't have that. The Lord covered you though, because you
still the Lord covered because we ain't and no ditch child.

Do you remember the church trips how many times we
didn't know if those drivers were licensed. You got to
look to that side of the room when you have
church and stuff, and you know, we never knew if
the deacon or whoever was driving had a license. And
the band they never got old changes made that stuff. Yes,

we just to the church. Christian Union Missionary had a
church buts and then and then uh, we broke down.
We had the vans out in Marylanney always drive a
coach bus and you had to pay the money and
always be the people that he had the money. We
take the trip in in Milwaukee, we take the trip

to Great America. And then when I got to Maryland,
that's when we that's when it was six and you
get to go on the church six flashship or your
school was going to the trip and you got to
go to the summer church trip. Was cool because you
you might have made a little connection, got a little

We went to your church and you just made somebody.
You might have been looking at the choir or something.

do segments. You have to have fifteen seconds to like

to make sure you get to get the Walmart thing
in and then get the all that. Then you have
to make sure that people listening because they're going to

tune out, but you got to make sure that you
have to keep it. Like when I learned those metrics,
I was like, wait, what do that mean? And then
it was just like, yeah, that's the people who turned
but they always come back, So you have to wear radio.
They don't see you, they just hear you. So you
have to honestly go up to people that's least expected
to turn into you. I became the one that they

because mind you. We're going from talk radio, so that's
mostly that's not black people. We don't want to listen
to people talk. And I think it was like sports

they're going from the good old boys and the people

it's going from regular to dag on their ratchet. But

how do you go from radio being successful at radio

always see. I don't even watch TV now, so I
don't know. But I always just like, as long as
I'm allowed to do me, I'm like, that's what people like,

I'm like, that's real. When you try to make me
something I'm not or saying something that I don't want
