Speaker 1 (00:03):
Morning. E'rerope about to enter the arena and join the
battle to save America with your host Sean Carnell. Good evening, America.
Welcome to Battleground Live. This is the show where for
the past year we kicked ass, we took names, we
(00:23):
locked horns with the radical left, and you know the drill.
We never quit, we never surrender. From sea to shining
Sea and everybody in between. Welcome patriots on this glorious
glorious what is it? It's Tuesday. Well, as you can
probably imagine, the last day has been absolutely crazy. I'll
(00:47):
just tell you exactly what happened. I got a call
yesterday at about four point thirty from the Secretary of
Defense saying that that the President was going to announce
my position as the assistant of the Secretary of Defense
(01:07):
for public Affairs and the Pentagon spokesperson. Uh and that
the President wanted to do it himself. And I'm just
paraphrasing because I don't want to get into the intricacies
of the conversation. What was a private conversation with Secretary
heg Seth. But I was I was blown away by that.
And you know the reason why I was blown away
(01:31):
by it, you know, because I mean, look, I didn't
go down to I didn't go down to Marlago. I
mean I I loved the idea of maybe getting a
job in the administration. I also knew that lots of
qualified people would be applying for jobs. And you know,
I don't know, I don't have a lot of the
(01:53):
people that apply for jobs like this. They have entire
camps of people, you know, that have that that friends
with the President's inner circle, that advocate and jockey for
these types of physicians. And by the way, not throwing
shade at any of those people. That's how this is done,
both on the Democrat side of the House and the
Republican side of the House. That's that's how it's done.
(02:15):
But I don't have that. I live on a small
farm in western Pennsylvania with my amazing wife, Commander Melanie,
and five amazing kids. And you know, we've been doing
a podcast now for over a year. Started as a
small podcast has grown into something much more formidable. I mean, seriously,
(02:39):
we've been only doing this for a year and you
all have been amazing. And my mission from the outset
has always been just to fight for the country, just
to continue to battle on behalf of America. And so
I was sitting there and I was at the basketball,
(03:01):
my daughter's basketball game prior to the show, which is
why it was late. I get here in the chair,
and that's when I got the call from the Secretary
of Defense. And you know, again, this was like still
trying to wrap my mind around the enormity of it all,
is what I'm saying. So many of you all were
saying in the live chat, Oh, sure, your daughter's basketball game,
but no, it's the truth. Was that my daughter's basketball game.
(03:25):
So still trying to wrap my mind around the enormity
of all of this, because I have to tell you
it is the honor of a lifetime to have been
appointed by the President of the United States for a
job like this. You know, I've told many of you
(03:47):
all this story a couple times, especially people the OG
listeners of this show. You know, I wish after nine
to eleven, after those buildings fell, that I truly understood
what it meant to join an organization like the US military.
I joined the Army, was in the infantry, went to
(04:10):
airborne school, went to ranger school, and then went to combat.
That's exactly what I wanted. I wanted to be on
the front lines of the fight, taking the fight to
the enemy, attacking the enemy that attacked us on September eleventh,
And like most early twenty somethings, I was full of
piss and vinegar. I was very motivated. I believe that
(04:31):
with the might and power of that American flag on
my shoulder in the military, the wind at my back,
I could accomplish anything. That's and I really wasn't thinking
of much else. But as time were on, and as
I got to know my troops and I got to
I got to learn about the lineage of my unit,
third Brigade, second Italian eighty seventh Infantry Regiment, third Portune
(04:55):
Bravo Company, just the lineage of that regiment going all
the way back to World War Two, and then about
the tenth Mountain Division and everything else, and I just,
I guess I just appreciated it more. I always understood
the legacy on an academic level, but I appreciated the
legacy so much more when I lived it. And then
(05:17):
by the time I got to combat and fought and
bled with these men, and back then again it was
just men in the infantry four hundred and eighty five
days in combat, sixteen straight months in combat on the
border of Afghanistan and Pakistan. And what was the most
dangerous place in all of Afghanistan bar none, hands down,
(05:38):
wasn't even a question. Michaeltoon built the very first combat
outpost called Combat Outpost Marga. It was so dangerous there
that the engineers that were tasked with building that combat
outpost left us in the middle of the night just
to go. Small group of infantrymen left us in the
middle of the night because it was just too dangerous.
And that very same night, we got intelligence from my
(06:01):
battalion commander that over three hundred and fifty people were
coming to attack us and overrun that small combat outpost
on Marga what was supposed to be two months or sorry,
two days before I was supposed to go home. Well,
thank god we got that intelligence and we were able
to stack up air power and plan a counter attack
and we ended up killing every single one of the
(06:25):
terrorists that tried to kill us that day. And I
guess I'm telling you all this because even though Afghanistan
was ended in a shameful way by politicians and by
the way, you know, it's both Democrats and Republicans that
got us to this point where our country seems to
(06:46):
at least certainly during my lifetime in Iraq and Afghanistan.
I mean, I'm forty three years old. We've been at
war for twenty years, or we were at war in
those countries for over twenty years, which is, you know,
about half of my life. All I've known is a
country at war, and that was my profession as a
war fighter. Imagine how it feels to have those wars
(07:10):
kind of thrown aside, and Democrats and Republicans are both
responsible for that. Despite all of that, I don't regret
serving at all. Despite all of that, fighting to defend
this country was the best thing I ever did professionally,
(07:33):
hands down, and it's not even close. As a young
second lieutenant, yes, I had all the right schools, you know,
had my Ranger tab and airborne wings. Really, who cares
about that? If your men think you're an idiot? Who cares?
But I had the best soldiers that you could possibly imagine. Seriously,
(07:54):
the best soldiers in the world. Many of their boots
actually their boots and t search had more experiencing combat
than I did. That had every reason to kick me
in a corner, stick me at a desk, and just
say do paperwork. We got the rest. But instead of
doing that, my soldiers taught, coached, and mentored me every
(08:16):
step of the way about what it meant to be
a good leader. So lucky to have them. And who
would have thought that that unit, which was the most
diverse unit in that you could possibly imagine. I'd say
this all the time. I loathe when people say diversity
is our strength. And I say this as somebody who
(08:37):
led a combat platoon that was more diverse than basically
any other infantry between out there, black next to white,
Christian next to Atheists, next to Muslim, next to jew,
Democrats next to Republican, young versus old, rich, poor Democrat, whatever,
all in the same foxhole. But on that battlefield in Afghanistan.
One of the things that you realize very very quickly
(08:58):
is that it doesn't matter what your skin color, doesn't
matter what God you worship, doesn't matter how much money
you make or what sort of politics you believe in.
You all bleed red and that's all that matters. There's
no hyphenated Americans out there on the battlefield. They're just Americans.
(09:18):
That's the only identity that we have that really truly matters.
And what was interesting about that is that when we
knew that as a unit that yes, we acknowledge that
we're diverse, and that's cool to have a bunch of
different perspectives at the table, but in and of itself
is not the end state mission of the United States Military.
(09:41):
It's to discard our differences and unite under a common banner,
fighting a common mission. That is what makes this military
the best, most lethal military on the planet. And it's
not even close, because there were more times than I
could count in Afghanistan where we were outnumbered and damn
or overrun by an enemy out that outnumbered us, not
(10:03):
as small numbers. Sometimes we were out numbered ten to one.
And yes we have better weapons, yes we have better equipment,
better training, I don't know, because the enemy that we
fought in Afghanistan was extraordinarily good, well trained, and they
were fighting on home turf. But the reason why we
survived was not all the cool, sexy equipment in the
(10:24):
air power even it was the fact that we were
united in purpose, that it was the grit of the American,
of the American soldier that allowed me to survive. And
I'm telling you when I said, because I was blown
away by the announcement of the president yesterday, and I
said in no uncertain terms that you know I'm the
(10:49):
leader that I am today because of my troops. They're
the ones that taught me how to do it. I'm
alive today because of my troops. They're the ones that
they saved me in Afghanistan times than I can count.
I mean literally save me, save me, saved my life.
And I owe everything to them. And I'm doing this
(11:11):
job and I'm accepting this position not because I need
a job. In fact, I love my farm. You'd love
it too if you were here. Believe me, this place
is amazing. It's like a little slice of heaven. My
wife and I talk about it all the time. I
have an amazing life. We've got the most amazing wife
(11:32):
you could imagine, got the most amazing set of five
kids in the world. They are seriously all an extraordinary blessing.
We've got four huge like fat goats, we got fourteen chickens.
We've got a great life here. Western Pennsylvania is God's country.
(11:55):
I don't know if any I know this is a
national show I don't know if any of you all
been to Western Pennsylvania, but it's it's amazing. We have
an amazing life here. And it's not just Melanie and
the kids, it's also my parents and you see real
aunt Cindy in the live chat, that's my real aunt.
We have a big, strong family here. I'm doing this
(12:17):
job because, you know, it's bittersweet for me because as
I told you, I love my life. But you know
how I told you, if this country we're ever threatened,
and my wife knows this, but if this country we're
(12:38):
ever threatened, even though we squandered the fights in Iraq
and Afghanistan and politicians are to blame for that, I
would still be the first in line to defend this
country hands down, or would not even be a question
about it. I mean, the first in line. Send me,
send me so my kids don't have to go. And
(13:01):
ultimately that's why I'm doing it. You know, I don't
have you know, I've been doing national media since twenty twelve.
I mean, a first book came out in twenty twelve.
I ran to political campaigns that were high profile political campaigns,
did lots of interviews as part of that stand up
press conferences all the time. I only know one way, right,
(13:22):
and many of you all who have been listening and
watching this show for a long time, no that I
only have one way, and that's just no bullshit all
the time. Remember what my dad told me before I
ran for office, And this was not him being negative.
He's like, Sean, You're going to be a terrible politician
because you just can't lie to people. I just can't.
I don't have that in me. Might not like what
(13:44):
I have to say, you might not like how I
say it, but at least you'll know it's how I feel.
You know, I'm not a traditional comms person, you know so,
but I know I know I can do the job.
I under stand the contemporary operating environment. I understand the
geopolitical threats that America faces, and ultimately that's why I'm
(14:08):
doing this. I look at it as I'm framing this
in my mind, as I'm framing this in my mind
as a deployment to Washington, d C. And technically, yes,
I get the weekends off. But last weekend, the Secretary
(14:31):
of Defense and high level defense officials were at Walter
Reed dealing with the flooding that the Biden administration allowed
to occur there. They spent the weekend dealing with that.
So I say all that to say, yes, technically, you're
off on the weekends. So on the weekends that I
can get home, I will drive back up to Fort Parnell,
and the weekends that I can't, you know, and certainly
(14:54):
during the week as well, my wife will be down
there with me. The kids will come down on the weekends.
But it's not going to be easy. But I'm doing
this because I feel like we're at an inflection point
in the country. And you know, I've told you many times, Okay,
(15:16):
we worked so hard to get President Trump elected. In fact,
we acknowledge that this was the craziest election cycle in
my lifetime, maybe ever. We acknowledge all of those things.
But what about after Trump? What about after these four years?
(15:40):
And the president is going to need loyal people, And
you know the media treats, oh he wants loyal people,
well like me? I know, shit, he needs loyal people.
Any leader in any organization, whether it's on the ball field,
whether it's in the boardroom, whether it's in government. You're
the president, you're the commander in chief. You need loyal
(16:02):
people willing to work for you. That's how it goes.
The media treats that as if it's a it's a
dirty word, but it's the President is going to need help,
and Secretary heg Seth is going to need help as well.
He's going to need competent people that can get the
job done. And ultimately, you know, the reason why I'm
doing this and and sacrificing a lot on the home front,
(16:26):
you know, is because I feel like our country is
really at an inflection point. Every single wargame simulation that
we've that we've run with China has America losing. I'm sorry,
but that's just not something that we can tolerate. It's
not something that we can know and be okay with.
(16:50):
We have to evolve our force and evolve it rapidly.
We have to reform the acquisitions process at the Pentagon
so that we can develop the most cutting edge technological
weapons and get him into the hands of our warfighters
when they actually need them. For example, when I was
in Afghanistan for the first six months of that deployment,
(17:12):
we didn't even have armored trucks. There weren't enough armored
trucks to come outfit us. Believe me. Do you think
the brilliant military minds at the Pentagon maybe could have
anticipated that we would need armored trucks in Afghanistan if
we were planning on going to Afghanistan or maybe even
go into Iraq. Even this was prior to improvised explosive
(17:32):
devices being used on the regular. You need armored vehicles
to stop bullets. You think that our leaders would have
had the forethought to understand that we'd even have that
for six months. So my point is, drastic perform at
the Pentagon is needed. How can we sit here as
Americans or someone who's worn the uniform, willing to give
his life for this country knowing that China has won
(17:54):
every war game with the United States, You simply can't.
We can't tolerate that as a country. And so that's
why I'm doing this. I'm doing this because I believe
that in the next four years we'll be able to
bring about really substantial and lasting change at the Department
of Defense that will not just look after this generation,
(18:17):
but also my children's children and then their kids. You know,
we don't want our kids going to fight in frivolous conflicts.
We don't want that. In fact, we got a quick
here come here, I'm gonna speaking of family and children.
Come here, Evan, No, over here, buddy, over here, you
want to come over here? Come Pilon. Say hi to everybody.
(18:38):
This is this is the this is the There's Commander Melanie,
There's Evan Pilon. Everybody so sorry, sorry sorry. So there's
there's my daughter Emma. There's my daughter Katie. Where's Natalie screening?
There's my daughter Natalie. So of course we knew. We
knew when this job was announced that the meeting would
(19:00):
try to regurgitate a bunch of the bs that went
on all the fake stuff that happened back in twenty
twenty one during my Senate run, and they always some
of the reporting on this actually mostly a lot of
the reporting has been really great and really fair, but
some of it is they deliberately harken back to that,
trying to leave like violating journalism rule one oh one
(19:23):
of actually report what's happening in the now. And you
can see, like everything in our life is pretty damn good, right, everybody, Yes, yes,
pretty good? But this is this is this is the
last Battleground Live show for at least a little bit
until I get down to Washington, DC, learn the left
(19:44):
and right limits of the job. How often I'll be
able to engage with all of you. You know, I
don't know how often I'm gonna be able to do
the podcast down there, how busy I'm going to be
even know if it's allowed or if i'll be allowed.
I sure as I sure, I'll know. I'm not allowed
to take money from sponsors, take money from advertisers, or
anything like that. But I will come up with a
(20:06):
plan to continue to engage this audience, even if it's
on the weekend, once a week and for free. The
community that we've built is just so valuable, and I
think we have to keep it intact. But you guys
don't have to stay around here. But just so we
say thank you to everybody. I have an amazing family, right, Okay,
be careful of all the wires because I don't know
you're seeing right here on the screen looks nice and
(20:29):
neat right here, but they're there. Are There are wires everywhere.
There are wires. Thank you guys. You guys are the best. Yeah.
See see what I'm saying. I have a pretty nice,
a pretty amazing looking family don't, don't I. So that's
when when you see the media out there, when you
(20:51):
see the media out there smearing my family, I want
you to remember that image. You know, they're with me
right now. My kids they're out The media is out
there are saying Sean doesn't have custody of his kids,
or Shawn's a terrible person, he's a terrible father. Oh,
I'll try. This is what President Trump does. He appoints
these evil, terrible people. Well, this is why independent media
(21:11):
is important. You can't look at things through the lens
that the media presents. Look, look here, I just showed
you my family. They're all with me right now. Well,
my family's right here. But I'm doing this job because
I think America is I think America is at an
(21:34):
inflection point. We have to do something to fix it.
And I think I can help. I think I can
help prevent your children and your grandchildren from going into fights.
That's why when I talk about standing on the shoulders
of giants and those who came before, and the legacy
that we inherited, and the men and women who wear
the uniform today and every person that will wear the
uniform in the future, I'm thinking about them. I'm doing
(21:56):
this job for them, only this time going back in
to serve I recognize that legacy. Whereas as a young
kid donning the uniform for the first time, I didn't,
so all of that knowledge that I have from the
field of battle and Afghanistan and then being a rear
attachment commander and in charge of casualty notification and casualty
(22:17):
affairs when I get back taking all of that knowledge
into this senior level appointment at the Pentagon. Just to
be clear, I see part of my role as to
pursue or to work with the Secretary of Defense in
the pursuit of peace. Building the biggest, strongest military on
(22:42):
the planet, but doing that in the pursuit of peace
for not just our world and our country, but for
our children and our children's children. That's it. That's the mission,
you know. I think back to Vietnam veterans. I used
to I would walk around to see Vietnam veterans in
(23:04):
the airport or out at the grocery store or whatever
seem where they're hat or whatever, and I always make
it a point to say welcome home to them. And
part of the reason why I do that is because
they weren't welcomed home. They were treated terribly when they
came home from Vietnam. But what makes that generation of
(23:27):
American warriors so truly rare and exceptional is that they
made a promise that, despite being treated terribly, they would
never allow another generation of American warriors to be treated
like that again. And I'm lucky that I'm part of
one of those generations that is under the umbrella and
protection of the Vietnam era vets who look out for us. Well,
(23:52):
I think it's our generation's turn. It's my generation's turn
to stand up and say to stand up and say
we're looking out for the next generation. We're looking out
for this generation of American war fighters. So I just
want to say, battle Crew, it's it's it's been an honor,
(24:14):
it really has. And my phone is lighting up with
flags from Aunt Cindy and all the people that are
throwing rumble rant tips in the live chat. I can't

(29:57):
I'll be doing the Pentagon press briefings and engaging with
the media. My responsive will be responsible for communicating all
Department of Defense priorities to the American people, the American media.
In Congress, I'll interface between the White House and our
Intel community, and at also tie in at the Department Offense. Obviously,
I'll be there and make sure all the comms are
(30:17):
on point. I'll have an operational tie in. I'll be
involved in things. I'd be able to com communicate that
to the American people and do you all effectively. I'm
going to be the most transparent Pentagon spokesperson in recent memory,
at least I could say that. And also I'm responsible
for all the public affairs as well, so all the
cool stuff outward facing stuff that the Pentagon does, my
(30:39):
office will run that. And we also do tours. So
if you want a Pentagon tour, come down. My office
will be in charge of Pentagon tours as well. Uncle Otis,
thank you, jeez, you've been around for a long time,
my friend, Thank you very much. Slew Coat. You guys

(31:01):
Over a year ago, like in December of last year,
it was like, oh, I hope I can get five
hundred live viewers. Now we're well up over four thousand
smash that like button in one final smash the little
gray thumb beneath the video smash it turn the like
button green. That help us immensely. And so here's what
(31:23):
I'm gonna say, stay tuned to Locals my Locals page.
I'm gonna everybody that is subscribed to Locals. We're gonna
make good on that, whether it's about refunding the money
or if you want to stay subscribed to the end
of the year. Commander Melanie and I are going to
document behind the scenes the move. We are going to document,
(31:44):
you know, basically all things. It's to the extent that
we're allowed. I have to check with like the ethics
team at the Department of Defense and all this other stuff,
