Today's episode contains spoilers for the Last of Us two
two through the Valley. Definitely watch it, watch, definitely.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
Listen to this. Watch it first, guys, please.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Hello, My name is Jason Concepcion and I'm Rosy Nike
and welcome back to X Ray Vision of the podcast
where we dive deep. It's your favorite shows, movies, comics
of pop culture coming here from My Heart podcast, where
we'll bring you three episodes a week plus names Tuesday
plus Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (00:49):
In today's episode, guys, I'm not even gonna say let's
just let's just talk about that.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Let's just get into okay, Episode two oh two of
The Last of Us. We open on Abby's nightmare, which
she's been having for five years now. She's entered the
Firefly Facility in Salt Lake City, these alarms going off,
and she's trying to tell herself, you don't want to
(01:19):
see what you're going to see.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Don't go in that room.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
When you walk into the operating theater, you're gonna see
your dad in there with his brains blown out, So
don't go in there. And then, like as in every
nightmare that she has over these five years, she goes
in and is shattered. She wakes up there in that house.
Her and her crew who have been following her these
(01:43):
five years, Wow on this mission of I mean, that's
like a lot.
Speaker 1 (01:46):
I'd say that's a little. I feel like it's a
I feel like it's a fire fly.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Get a fucking job, guys, truly like build a community,
Like what is saving the world? Yeah, I guess we're
just like putting that aside.
Speaker 1 (01:59):
Yes, they're like, oh, there's no fireflies really because there's
like six of you here. I think you guys could
be doing something good, couldn't. Yes, Yeah, I do love.
I love that they're in the big resort launch though,
Like that's the kind of shit I love to see
in a post apocalyptic show. It's like I want to
see the weird unused buildings and how they are repurposed.
(02:22):
And I mean, I have to say, this is a
fantastic lookout that they found.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
It is beautiful and in really good shit stuff. So
her crew has already been kind of scouting. Owen mainly
has been like looking at the town through there's a
lookout advantage point where they can outside the house where
they can kind of see patrols in the valley, and
then they can see it pretty well from the picture
windows there and the size of the town. It's obvious
(02:48):
resources how active it is. The fact that the layout
and the patrols suggest military experience all of the really
intimidates them. And you know, Owen's pointing out like even
if we get down there, even if we get through
the gates, even if we get inside, like past the dogs,
(03:10):
pass all the armed settlers, Like, how do we then
find Joel? We don't know who he is or where
he is, and et cetera. Abby is throwing around some
of the craziest options. Okay, what if we hijack a
patrol and then they like we casually torture them, casually
torture them, but like pretend that we're going to kill them,
(03:33):
but they were not going to wink wink, but we
might probably then we probably would, and then we h
and then we get Joel's locations that way, and then
one of them is like, okay, but what if and
then we just let the patrols go. Yeah, And Abby's
like males like the one who clearly is a doctor
who doesn't have any interest in the murdering and is very.
Speaker 1 (03:57):
She's like, she's like, don't do it, Like I don't.
I but we weren't hurting anyone other than Joel, you know,
but obviously that was a naive outlook I have to
say yes.
Speaker 2 (04:09):
And so when Abby goes out, the rest of the
team is like, fuck, this is like a real Captain
quig a situation. We've got here, like what do we do?
You know, looking at the why at Jackson, You're thinking
we're gonna get killed. And Owen is like, my plan
that I mentioned is basically to try and convince Abby
to not do this.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
Yeah, actually, very great plan. I gotta be honest, though,
Owen should have bought that plan in like two years ago.
I feel like you left, but.
Speaker 2 (04:36):
I get too late, Like you know, it's like again,
your dad's trying to save the world, and then he
and eighteen people get like murder. It was excessive, Like
Joel didn't need to kill the doctor.
Speaker 1 (04:46):
I know they do quite a good job. I'm not
gonna lie of kind of laying out how callous Joel
it was throughout this episode, but also I will say,
like the doctor did have Ellie laid up in there
with some old, rusty ass looking souls, like by the
time we die, I would probably be pissed through.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
And one thing I want to mention before we get
too far into this, because we've we've forgotten this all
the mentions in season one and Game one and the
and you know, if you've played the game, you know
this as well. Of the decade plus that Joel spent
kind of in the wilderness before he ended up in
(05:26):
Boston was in his own words, filled with rampant criminality. Yes,
and he murders that he refuses to describe, but is
you know, is clearly like borderline raider type stuff. Just
to like have that out there. Of course, Yeah, we
(05:46):
love Joel. He mellowed you. You know, he was like
teaching people teaching.
Speaker 1 (05:50):
But you know, you're touching on one of the I
think the most powerful things about this episode and this
story that we are going to get into is the
the episode goes on absolutely okay.
Speaker 2 (06:02):
So Jesse wakes up Ellie who is asleep in her
in her.
Speaker 1 (06:07):
Garage, in her giant one bedroom apartment in the Apocalypse. Right,
We've got a lightful stuff and things.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Again, we do have a housing crisis in Jackson, but
that's maybe not anymore actually anyway, so it is you know,
it's the morning after New Year's Eve, so this is
she's got Jesse's like, listen, I need you for last
minute patrol and I'm sorry. You know, I know what
a tough morning this is for everybody. Ellie then admits like, hey,
(06:35):
I'm sorry about what happened. I kissed Tina and Jesse
acts like he's mad, and then he reveals that he's
not mad, but then is he mad? Like he's really
playing with her.
Speaker 1 (06:45):
And it's having a lot of fun. It's very clear
that these two are really close. It's also clear that
Jesse is like one of the more sensible people and
the zombie apocalypse, Like can he really afford to be
emotionally upset that his girlfriend he broke up with a
week ago kiss someone else. No, he's going to go
on patrol, like, but it is fun to see that
playfulness between them, and I also love when he knocks
(07:08):
on door and Ellie comes out. She's obviously hungover and
she's feeling tired, and she's like, what do you want
and he's like, I want you to, you know, do
your civil judy for the people of Jackson Hall, Like,
is it really fun, fun banter between the two of them.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
As they walk to the gate that they're going to
leave from, they notice the town is like really gearing up.
It's going on alert. Of course, there's the infected that
have been sighted nearby, but also there's a recent find
in which the town learned that infected or kind of
hibernating under like a layer of frozen dead infected under
(07:47):
the snow.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
To keep them insulated so they don't freeze.
Speaker 2 (07:51):
And so some a one patrol got chased by thirty infected,
which is a lot and this plus Ellie's news about
the potential smart infected, has everyone on edge. Ellie then says, well,
I want to patrol, but I don't want to patrol
with you. I want to patrol with Joel. Jesse's like,
I thought you hate Joel, and she's like, yeah, but
(08:11):
you know it's complicated, like it's a father daughter relationship and.
Speaker 1 (08:15):
Yeah, but we're Ellie and Joel and it's never gonna change.
And I also love that. Like she's probably thinking about
how last night he knocked out a homophobe for her,
and she's like, well, Sef, She's like, maybe I could
have been a bit more like appreciative, Like that's my
cranky dad, Like I'd like to go on a patrol
with him. Maybe I can fix things, but alas it's
(08:37):
too nice.
Speaker 2 (08:39):
So we see Tommy brief the town about current events.
This is makes you feel really good actually about Tommy's
stewardship of the town and the council stewardship of the town.
Speaker 1 (08:50):
Oh, he's done a great job.
Speaker 2 (08:51):
You know, basically his whole messages, Hey, everybody, stay alert
if you hear whistles, if you hear bells, go to
your ready station if you're one of the armed defenders
of the town, and get ready to shelter in place,
if you are one of the civilians whose job it
is to watch the kids and watch the people who
can't fight. Maria then and I think another important scene
(09:14):
that again sets up the idea that this is how
you stop yes cycle, This is how you stop these conflicts.
Speaker 1 (09:23):
And this is how socialism could work. After we was
saying they gave it a bad name, I feel like
they're coming through looking a little bit more organized, a
little bit they're sensible.
Speaker 2 (09:33):
There's there's a there's So Maria takes Ellie to Seth
and Seth gives a very heartfelt and sincere, like you
feel like it's a sincere apology, like a clearly sincere one,
and Ellie doesn't really give anything back, and it's unclear
like how she receives this very sincere I feel like apology,
but you also kind of feel like the fact that
(09:54):
she didn't reject it out of.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
Hell, I was gonna say the fact that I think
she respects Maria and to not just tell him to
go fuck himself, which is a very elly thing to do. Annie.
You know, I like the notion that he makes her
and Jesse these steak sandwiches, like as the ecology. It's
these little moments and it feels like, okay, like this
is how Maria and Tommy have kept this place going
(10:17):
for so this.
Speaker 2 (10:18):
Is how we this is how we move forward, you know,
this is how we even something like Dina and Jesse
in a heavily armed society, right their breakup, the various
breakups that happen that must be happening, and various romances
and petty feuds. It must be happening in a town
the size of Jackson, because everybody's armed, like very dangerous,
(10:39):
and the fact that the town takes it seriously about like,
let's squash all this stuff. Let's talk about it, and
let's squash it. Let's move forward. I think it's really
is really important, and it had me thinking as this
episode intensifies, like what alternate universe, how could Abby get recourse?
Like what would justice? What is a version? What is
(11:01):
a process by which they could get and feel as
if they were satisfied and seeking just I mean.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
It's yeah, let's talk about it.
Speaker 2 (11:10):
We'll talk about it.
Speaker 1 (11:11):
Get interesting because one of the things that I think
could be the recourse already happens in this episode when
we talk about an eye for an eye, you know
that kind of thing. So let's yeah, let's keep talking
about it.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
So Abby is on lookout. She sees a patrol approaching. Meanwhile,
weather is starting to pick up and get very dangerous
and it starts to interfere with communications. Tommy sends word out,
everybody come back in patrols head in. Jesse and Ellie
are too far out, so they have to shelter in
place Eugene, the late Eugene Gil's ex former partner, now deceased.
(11:45):
They shelter at his former grow house.
Speaker 1 (11:48):
Seven to eleven grow house.
Speaker 2 (11:49):
I'd love this seven eleven grow house. From the way
Jesse talks about Eugene, it really does seem like Jiel
had to put Eugene down after he got bit or
infected in some other way.
Speaker 1 (12:01):
And I thought something interesting was, like Ellie is clearly
quite emotionally like connected to that death, Like when she
finds Eugene's kind of dog tags, she have his firefly
dog tags. She thinks a lot about it, and they
have to have that conversation. And I think because that
represents a side of Joel that she doesn't want to
(12:23):
think about, you know, the side that was able to
go into that hospital and do what she knows he did.
Speaker 2 (12:29):
Abby is tracking this patrol, but then as she's kind
of like watching it with clearly with the idea that like, okay,
I'll just ambush them myself. Yeah, and it's just two people,
so she feels like it's doable, she falls down a hill.
She ends up in a field with frozen infected that
turns out to be one of these hibernation sites with
(12:51):
like the it's a mound basically of infected under a
layer of frozen infected, and the field just starts to
move and stir, and all of a sudden she is
running from a growing horde of infected. She gets into
like a walled area, looks like maybe it was a
power plant or you know, some other building that is
(13:16):
in the area that's not Jackson. She goes over it.
She's running through the streets. This is an incredible sequence.
Speaker 1 (13:22):
It's so scary. It's so scary.
Speaker 2 (13:25):
She gets trapped between a fallen chain link fence and
like the ground in a wall, and she's like scurrying along,
scurrying along, scurry along. She's really about to fucking die.
Speaker 1 (13:37):
Buy it.
Speaker 2 (13:38):
She's about to die when a hand reaches down, shoots
the infected that's following her, pulls her up on her
feet and gets her inside this big again. It looks
like a power plant or something, or factory. Inside this
big factory, they close the doors. I believe it's a mine,
a mine mine, yeah, And it's Joel. He has saved
(14:01):
her life. And the fact that Dina then says Joel
calls out to him immediately, Abby is like, oh fuck,
it's him. Yeah, And she convinces them to head up
to the lodge where her armed friends are. Let's take
a quick break and then we'll be back with it.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Back to the lodge, back to the launch.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
We're back. Tommy's in the radio room with Amy, who
runs communications. He gets the news that all the patrols
are account of work except for Joel and Dina, and
he's extremely concerned. He makes Amy get on the radio
and you know, basically call out for them every ten
seconds until he gets word. Shortly thereafter, Amy gets Jesse
(15:00):
and Ellie on the radio and they learned that Joel
and Dina haven't checked in, so they head out to
go look to see what's going on. Meanwhile, in the town,
work is continuing on the pipes. One of the workers
discovers the fungal tentacles in the pipes, which we've.
Speaker 1 (15:14):
Which we've been trying to tell about everybody, guys, nobody
believed us.
Speaker 2 (15:21):
Meanwhile, back up the hill, Joel, Dina and Abbey are
fleeing on horseback from a massive horde and there's another
hoard up on the hillside and it converges with the
first one. And now you've got this like just huge.
I would estimated it. I would estimate it maybe the
low thousands were like high hundreds.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
It's it's it's it's almost like an avalanche of effect
that's kind of very very scary by falling down and
now they are awake, they're falling, and of course Abby
is desperate for them to go to the lodge, whereas
Joel is starting and Dina definitely is sassab Abby from
(16:03):
the stars.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
She's mighty a little bit us.
Speaker 1 (16:06):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (16:06):
Yeah, This horde is so huge that the Jackson watchtowers
pick it up pretty quickly. They see it in the
distance and it's heading straight for the town. They ring
the alarm, plan goes into action. People are heading towards
rooftops with guns.
Speaker 1 (16:20):
Blowing the zombies up, which Joel sees.
Speaker 2 (16:23):
Yeah, oh, young younger citizens. Unarmed citizens are going into basements.
Joel is like, let's go back. We got to figure
out how we can help fight, but Abby's like, no, no, no,
up the hill at the lodge. My friends have weapons
and we're really like we can help you, like, we
can help you fight through the horde and get in there,
and yeah yeah, And so Joel agrees. The Joel of
(16:44):
five years ago would have picked this up. But the
Joel right now has lost a step and he is
so focused on what's going on at Jackson.
Speaker 1 (16:54):
That he just and he's overly he's overly unsuspicious of
young women, like he saved this gal he Aaron.
Speaker 2 (17:06):
Is saying, and wants to take care of Dina by
delivering her to a lodge of strange armack.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Aaron's like, she's cold.
Speaker 2 (17:14):
Okay, she's really cold. Yeah, I mean he's just like
not thinking it.
Speaker 1 (17:21):
Through now, he's not as suspicious as he should be.
Speaker 2 (17:24):
Yes, absolutely so. In Jackson, it's a fucking battle scene.
The Hordes are at the walls, they're they're setting them fire,
they're shooting them. But then a Bloater arrives on the scene.
The Hordes starts shifting and Tommy's like, oh shit, this
means one of the bosses is here and it's a bloater.
(17:46):
Tommy has the defense shift to the part of the
wall where the bloater is going to attack because they
know how strong these things are and they know that
it's going to come through. Bloater busts down the wall.
Half of Tommy's flamethrowers squad runs away. Hey guys, we're
going to talk about this in the council meeting. If
we all survive, let me just mention that Okay, we're
(18:08):
gonna discuss this. This is gonna be what do you
what do you do? Like, what is your dereliction of duty?
I I mean obviously like we're not executing people. We're
not that kind of town.
Speaker 1 (18:17):
And also it doesn't you need people to protect. But
that's kind.
Speaker 2 (18:22):
But I think that there's gotta be whether it's increased training,
whether it's like re you know, rerouting you to a
different area of responsibility.
Speaker 1 (18:32):
I think reassignment to a non frontline situation.
Speaker 2 (18:35):
Because if you can't be there in that moment, then
well we got yeah, what are you doing? We got problems?
Speaker 1 (18:42):
So as we will learn the flamethrowers are a good
weapon against that, you could have good different So.
Speaker 2 (18:50):
It's Tommy and one other guy. After half the squad
runs away and they're just you know, burning infected or
getting up onto the rooftops. They're getting at the defenders.
It this is there's gonna be casualties here. It's looking
honestly at best, the coin flip that they make it
out of us like it's looking bad. The bloater starts
heading from Maria's rooftop. Tommy goes in. He distracts the bloater,
(19:13):
gets it to chase him. He finds himself trapped in
a back alley with the bloater, just him and the bloater,
and he just starts going grilled mushroom.
Speaker 1 (19:23):
Yeah, well he's grilling that mushroom. It's on it's the
vegetarian option on the barbecue. That mushroom is I think grilled.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
I bet you it smells good.
Speaker 1 (19:33):
You was thinking that too. I was wandering like, does
it smell delicious? But also has five years of you know,
or however long of zombie apocalypse twelve fifteen, twenty years
of zombie poplar? Has it made mushrooms that usually smell delicious?
Is that like I smell you hate now, Yeah.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
That's what's smelling. You probably hate it at this.
Speaker 1 (19:55):
Point, but that's what it would probably smell delicious.
Speaker 2 (19:58):
That's what I was imagining, A wonderful like kebab of
grilled mushrooms, Like grilled mushrooms with some garlic.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Oh yeah, we're in Zelda, like.
Speaker 3 (20:06):
We're just doing some cooking and Zelda and Tommy like
goes right down to like he he's at burns all
his fuel on this bloater, which drops dead like at
his feet.
Speaker 2 (20:19):
It's very close. The fighting is just general street to street.
Now Maria goes releases the dogs, and the dogs turn
the tide and we gotta gotta gotta take care of
these dogs.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
That credit because I'm saying that's like maybe the dog
should have gone out fust that could have been a
different situation.
Speaker 2 (20:39):
Let's credit these dogs.
Speaker 1 (20:42):
Please give them a medal.
Speaker 2 (20:44):
Up at the lodge, the horses arrive. Oh, you know,
everybody comes in. Joel is like, hey, everybody, get you
ready to go in five minutes, giving orders like minutes,
three minutes. Abby gives oh in the signal like this,
and Joel his weight is just staring down at the
like he's focused. And here he's you know. Dina is
(21:08):
now even more suspicious. She's seeing their packs and how
organized they are.
Speaker 1 (21:12):
This is a problem and it's not like a cozy
like you're not trying to stay in here for the way.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Why are they absolutely and before she can raise the alarm,
Manny takes teena hostage gun to the head. They take Joel.
Joel immediately almost right away, kind of knows that this
is about him, whether it's his own guilt about all
(21:38):
the many terrible things that he's done exactly exactly Salt Lake,
or or just a general like my luck had to
give out at some point. He he's strangely accepting of
this situation. Almost right away, he goes very cold, and
he kind of realizes.
Speaker 1 (21:56):
But then I love the choices that they make with
the way they reveal the information where Abby kind of goes, oh,
her name's Dina, and then she goes and this is Joel,
and suddenly all the fireflies in the room.
Speaker 2 (22:11):
Yeah, he knows, he knows it's about him, and he.
Speaker 1 (22:14):
Says, this is one of my favorite and most horrific moments,
which is he goes, I say. He's like, he tries
to say it, and that desperate like emotion. She's like,
I saved your life, and she says what kind of
life and then turns around and just shoots him in
the leg with a shotgun. Yeah, and then that's it.
It begins.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
So, uh, they threatened murder Dina, who they've knocked out
with like some kind.
Speaker 1 (22:39):
Of propofol maybe.
Speaker 2 (22:42):
And anesthetic, and they begin to torture Joel. Abby then
is like, you're gonna admit everything you did and all
the people you killed, who and the doctor who is
my dad. And there's a great moment where you see
Joel kind of nod a little bit like he's like, yes,
I did all. That's like he's acknowledging, he says.
Speaker 1 (23:00):
She says where she says, if you tell me the
truth about this one question, I won't kill Dina mel
is once again very upset, like what you're talking about.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Going to kill thee Like just like, don't go on.
Speaker 1 (23:12):
A quest for vengeance via murder because this is always
gonna happen. And they and he she says, where was
the last place you saw the fireflies? And he says
He's like see you know.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
He She's like kind of speechifying a little bit. And
then he's just like just fucking it.
Speaker 1 (23:30):
He's like, shut the farmer, like just fuck into it.
Speaker 2 (23:33):
So she's she works on him for a while with
a golf.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
She's hitting him with the golf club on the shotgun wound,
and then we also see her just punching him in
the face like hand to hand. Everyone the fireflies are
not loving it. Manny, he's kind of into it, but
otherwise they're all looking kind of sick of it. Like
especially it is like just fucking just shoot the guy.
Shoot the fucking guy.
Speaker 2 (23:57):
Ellie has tracked the horses here and she gets taken hostage,
and she then is forced to watch the final like
coup de gras of this in which as she is
begging for Joel's life and begging for him to stand up,
Abby stabs him with the the broken shaft of the
golf club through his neck and she dies. It's an
(24:22):
immediate catalytic moment in which Ellie goes from you know,
desperate and sad, to like like a rage monster.
Speaker 1 (24:33):
She's promising, Yeah, I'm gonna she's going to kill every.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
Single person in the room. Yeah, And the only reason
they leave her alive is because they're leg.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
Yeah right, yeah, they don't fucking know. Oh, give me
a break. I find the whole I found very interesting
because I did think, like, didn't you know why Joel
killed everyone? Because it was probably this girl? We do. Also,
there's an important mention here where Abby, when she is
torturing Joel says, yeah, there's no fireflies left. But now
(25:07):
I'm in a Seattle militia and I would tell you
not to go there, but that's not gonna happen because
you're not going to make it out of here. So
we know that the Fireflies have kind of, or at
least this group of fireflies had a transition to something else,
like a militia. Now they're not about saving the world,
they're about who knows, but we'll find out soon.
Speaker 2 (25:27):
So we go to Jackson where we see the outcome
of this battle. We see a resident who got bit
basically handing over his pistol and being like, just take
me out. And we're seeing clean up in the streets
and dead bodies everywhere, and it's really bad, but Tommy
(25:48):
and Maria made it.
Speaker 1 (25:49):
Yeah, and you get that emotional moment, and then we
see Jesse and Dina riding back. Dina is alive, she's awake.
Jesse has a kind of now tonic Ellie almost who
can't move on the horse, and behind them they're dragging
Joel's body.
Speaker 2 (26:06):
The body of Joel. Let's take a quick break and
we'll come back to topic, and we're back just be harrowing.
(26:28):
An incredible episode of television.
Speaker 1 (26:31):
I think one of the Hilans with it's one of
the best from the season. I also think, you know,
we were all having this conversation as people who have
played the game, When are they going to do it?
How are they gonna do it? I think this was
a great choice as a televisual narrative because I think
establishing where Joel and Ellie were in episode one and
(26:55):
then allowing us to get to know Abby the great
missdirect with Joel's saving Abby and kind of making us
rooting for Abby as she's running away from these infected
if you don't know who Abby is, you know, and
watching this as a television viewer and then having that
that turnaround is just unbelievable. I mean, especially because they
(27:19):
also once they get to the lodge, they allow you
to think for a moment that there's a raider element
to this or there's not going to go where it goes,
and then when she shoots him in the leg, you're like, oh, okay, yeah,
I mean Harrow being like absolute fucking bummer to watch
this last night and then have to watch it again
this morning and just be like, oh, my fucking god,
but it's so good, Like it's so fantastic, And this
(27:41):
is how you are supposed to feel in this moment
of the story. You're supposed to feel devastated.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
It's it's absolutely devastating, and Abby's, yeah, five years is
a long time to be like looking for one person,
like and I think it speaks to how much which
you know, her rage and not just her rage, but
there's like a specific kind of rage that she's feeling,
which is it's not just heartbreak, it's a feeling that
(28:09):
like something really really unjust has happened and whoever has
done it is simply going to get away with it. Yeah,
And I was led again to wonder because they've dropped
these moments with Gail and with Seth and with Maria's
kind of mediation between Seth and Ellie, like these moments
(28:31):
of like, how could you stop this? Because people are
going to argue, people are going to be in conflict,
people are going to disagree about this, that and the other.
So how do you stop it from spiraling into tit
for tat murder and worse exactly? And so because that's
what has been set off now, it's like this is
not fucking over by any means, right, this is going
(28:54):
to continue. And you know, it made me think, like
what is justice won? Justice probably would have been you
tell Joel everything, all your grievances. He doesn't lie as
he didn't there and then you shoot him, you don't
torture him exactly. That is some kind of justice or
(29:15):
but what is what is the non violent version?
Speaker 1 (29:17):
Is there a violent version? Is he saves your life
first of all, which is in the kind of wild
world of the zombie apocalypse, is the closest you're going
to get to some kind of recourses. He took someone
from you, but he gave you your life. And then
I think as well, it would be like some kind
of counsel trial and bringing that group into Jackson, giving
(29:42):
them the chance to live a healthy, like kind of
secluded life, and Joel being on some kind of like
you know, he doesn't get to go out and do
the violent things that he's done. He has to become
the mechanic. He has to make up for it. I
think there's versions of it, but from Abby and the
way that she feels about this, it will never turn
(30:05):
out that way, you know, And I think it's kind
of the one line I thought was kind of funny
was when Abby was like I was nineteen years old,
and I'm thinking, like, Babe, Ellie's only just turned nineteen.
That's kind of old nowadays, Like I don't want to think, yeah,
I'm like that you were not some young babe like
we have all been surviving the apocalypse. But no, I
think like I think something that to me is very
(30:29):
resonant about this, and I think is a really great
way of making the audience kind of complicit in the
conversation and in the actions, is like, we care about
Joel and Ellie because we are invested in their story.
And when Joel killed all of those people and saved
(30:51):
Ellie while we were horrified by it, especially on this pod,
we talked quite extensively about the way they brought it
to life, which I felt was very well done and responsible. Actually,
we still joined the episode season two, We still watched them,
we were still invested in their relationship. And I think
what's really interesting here is like, we hate Abby because
(31:13):
she kills Joel, but her actions here are not different
than what Joel did in that hospital. But we still
supported Joel. You know, I think there's this interesting conversation.
Speaker 2 (31:23):
I support I support Abby in everything except torturing Joel
for that long.
Speaker 1 (31:29):
Yes, yes, you see here.
Speaker 2 (31:31):
I mean I do think that you know that in
this world, according to the rules of it, no justice
system she got the right guy. He did the things
that he did. I think she's perfectly justified in wanting
him dead and killing him.
Speaker 1 (31:48):
Absolutely.
Speaker 2 (31:49):
The question is does that solve anything? And you know,
I think clearly no, right, I think no. I think
there's another like what was so? I was thinking, Okay,
what if you have Jeel hostage in the lodge, you
send somebody with like a white flag down to Jackson
and you say, we have Joel, we accuse him of
doing this, that and the other, and we want to
(32:11):
put him on trial.
Speaker 1 (32:12):
Well, also because there would be a huge uproar about that,
there is not a lot of transparency around what happened
when Joel left to sort like city with Ellie. Nobody
knows about Ellie being immune apart from you know, a
small group of people. I think that Joel having to
like live with the shame and having a trial and
(32:33):
the I think that that would have been a reasonable
and probably quite punishing experience for Joel.
Speaker 2 (32:39):
I mean, you've gotta, yeah, you've got to explain to
people that, oh, sorry, Jackson in these conditions, yeah, kind
of because Joel murdered a bunch of people exactly.
Speaker 1 (32:51):
I think the problem here is Abby is so obsessed
with this kind of cathartic killing of Joel that she
even like putting off the people who are in her corner.
The people who wanted this to happen and have supported
her in it for five years, are even kind of
shocked by the lengths that she will go. You know,
(33:12):
this is a and it's not gonna solve anything, you know,
now as and we'll talk about the discourse, but like
now the as you may have guessed after this episode,
the thrust of the show is going to be Ellie
trying to get her revenge on Abby, and that is
the plot of the game, and that is where this
(33:35):
is going. And it's been kind of funny to see
people be like, oh, I can't believe it's just like
a revenge plot and they killed Joel And that's the game, guys.
You know what it's like. It's adapting what it's adapting
and in the game, it's an incredibly powerful and interesting
exploration of that and it will be very intriguing to
(33:55):
see where they go and also how much they can tell.
Because we only have five episodes it's left of this season.
It's a seven episode season, so it's very short. Yes,
very short, and it's gonna be interesting to see where
they leave us, what kind of cliffhangers we get. Also,
I will say, and this was something that super produced
Joe'll put in the notes and I think is very true.
(34:17):
A lot of the questions around when this would happen
were tied to the fact that Pedro Pascal is so
unbelievably fantastic as Joel that you don't really want to
not have him, you know. And I'm sure HBO execs
were like crying at the idea of letting go of
him just before he's gonna be the you know, mister
fantastic and he's at the peak of his powers. But
(34:39):
you know who's got the juice in this show, Gabriel
Luna as Tommy.
Speaker 2 (34:44):
So I'm saying he's quite good. Well, let me just
say I think that regarding that the shocking death of
another character on an HBO television program, it was interesting
to me that before the episode they played that the
marketing voiced by Colin Farrell, I believe the penguin. I
(35:06):
don't know if you got this marketing, but and it's
basically him going through the whole little thirty to forty
five second piece is about how this is what HBO
slash Max is drama and shocks and I didn't think
that person would die and oh I can't believe that happened.
(35:28):
So they really leaned into it ahead of this episode. Yeah,
and I really think this is kind of like this
is as shocking and as crazy it as it is,
and this is the brand. This is what HBO does
is storytelling.
Speaker 1 (35:41):
It's gonna be probably the biggest shock for non game players,
since this is very.
Speaker 2 (35:52):
Just you can't believe it, surely if you're not playing
the game, if you haven't played the game, you would
not believe it.
Speaker 1 (35:57):
Yeah, and also we I mean we got people in
the DMS of our X ray vision you know space
where we were just like people were like, oh my god,
is this real? And I think they play into that
really well as well in the episode, because we have
this incredible I mean, Bella Ramsey give Bella that mma.
They are amazing in this role. And I think that
(36:22):
when they are, when you know, Ellie is saying like
get up, Joel, get up. We've seen him do that before.
We've seen him kind of come back from these almost
super heroic acts because he loves her, he wants to
protect her, he can come back, he can look after
and here we don't get that, and I think they're
playing into that idea of people have been asking me, Hey,
(36:43):
is there any way he doesn't die this season, Like
multiple people asked me that, and I was like, there's
absolutely no way, because it's such a huge part of
what made the game so iconic and so controversial and
so kind of within the public consciousness in the gaming community.
So yeah, I mean, it's happened. We got five episodes left,
(37:06):
that's what we got to see. I mean, I also
love that in our discord, we were having so many
people who were saying they felt like they were watching,
you know, the Battle of the Bastards. They were stood
in front of their TV waiting incredible action, just an
incredible action episode. But at the same time, you're waiting,
you're waiting, You're waiting because if you know, then you know.
(37:27):
And yeah, I have to say everyone who questioned whether
Caitlin Diava would have the juice as Abby because she's
not super bar or whatever like she is in the game,
She's got the juice. This woman has just become the
most instantly hated character on TV. Some of our big
Yellow Jackets fans, they said, Oh, I never thought i'd
find someone I hated more than Shanna Shipman, but here
(37:48):
she is. It's Abby. So yeah, I think that they Honestly,
I think for me, they they maybe even exceeded my
expectations because I think that length of time they spent
with Abby and the just pure rage and fury that
she had, and also the resignedness that Pedro Perscal brought
(38:09):
to this with Joel, there was just so much about
it that worked for me. I think this is like
a fantastic episode of television. And yeah, super producer Aaron said,
you know, he thinks it's probably one of his favorite
episodes of TV of all time, and I think that
that is just so huge. He's a sicko, he said,
I love that. I love to see that torture Anna. Okay,
(38:33):
what do you think? How did you feel? Let's talk
just quickly about a couple of game changes.
Speaker 4 (38:40):
Okay, put on your spoiler as we're going to talk
about some game changes and how things changed in the
show that were different in the game and how it
might impact what's going on.
Speaker 1 (38:51):
So put on your spoiler. A MOFs. If you do
not want to be spoiled or you have not played
the game, how do you feel like Joel's death compared
to the game, you know where he gets.
Speaker 2 (39:01):
I think it was I think it was well done.
I was I worried that it was going to be
a lot more graphic and drawn.
Speaker 1 (39:08):
Yeah, I think they were emotionally and also the imagination
was kind of wase.
Speaker 2 (39:15):
I agree, and I think there you know, I think
all the changes they've made have been, you know, really positive.
I think the casting of Hate Deaver one of these
things that I think a lot of people and we've
been I've been kind of griping about, like any of
the gamer centric adaptation discourse and I can hate, and
(39:36):
specifically around the casting of the show, I think Dever
was like awesome, She's so good and she brings an intensity. Yeah,
and it's a hard role, right because you're gonna hate
this person. We're gonna hate her for her doing a
justified in her mind and honestly and again the us
(39:57):
of this world, Yeah, justified thing. We're still gonna hate her.
And I think she carries the emotions of that character
and the motivations of that character in a way that
is both like you're entranced by how angry and single
minded she is, and you also understand like I get it.
Speaker 1 (40:22):
Yeah, I understand. Also, I think it's a brave thing
to take on that role. And you might be like, oh,
is it like she's an actor. No, I'm sorry. If
you're a woman taking on a role of a character
who's gonna kill from a video game, from a video
first of all, and he is then going to kill
the main character of the show, you know that that
is not going to be enjoyable experience living outside of
(40:46):
that character. But I have to say I think she
did an incredible job. I would be interested to see
if this is going to be a role that gets
her into awards contention. We've obviously seen how video game
players and no video game players have reacted. Obviously people
are losing that shit if they didn't play the game,
another big game change. How did you feel about it
(41:08):
being Dina instead of Tommy who went with Joel on
the patrol.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
I liked it. I thought it made a lot of sense.
I thought it made you kind of I think it
made you have an emotionally stronger reaction to Yeah, I'm
taking Dina hostage to uh, you know, as Aaron said, like,
(41:36):
there's also that aspect of Joel wanting to protect Dina exactly.
Speaker 1 (41:40):
I think that is a big part. And I think
if Tommy was that, you also don't know if he
would have saved Abby in the same way. Like everything
about this emotional space he's in is.
Speaker 2 (41:50):
I think there's a world in which if Tommy and
Jewel walk into that room, you're like, why didn't they
kill everybody?
Speaker 1 (41:57):
Yeah? Exactly, the two of them together, Like so I
think I like your I like it too. I also
think I think it adds a really interesting kind of
wrinkle into the Ellie and Dina relationship because that is
obviously she has now lost this person and Dina has
been through this incredibly traumatic situation. I also love the
(42:19):
Tommy Maria stuff that we get here in the Battle
of Jackson holl and how we kind of see Tommy
really come into that leadership space. He's such a good,
incredible kind of stronghold for this community. I thought that
was great. I also think the likelihood of us getting
some Joel flashbacks are very high, even though we don't
have a very long amount of time, And I do
(42:40):
think one of them is probably we will see him
probably tell Tommy what he did with the fireflies, which
is something you see happen in the game, but we
haven't seen here, so I think that will be interesting.
But yes, I'm very interested to see where the Tommy
and Ellie relationship goes after this. I'm interested to see
where the Jesse, Dina and Ellie relationship goes, which actually
(43:04):
I think as well, the three of them being the
ones who go there get him back, Dina being involved
that is going to cement that bond between the three
of them, which we know is a huge part. And yeah,
some I know some things people are really excited about.
And the discord was the flamethrowers.
Speaker 2 (43:19):
I've looked.
Speaker 1 (43:19):
It's like the bottle, Yes, the bottle. Last episode. Also
a nice little tidbit for you here is that Ashley Johnson,
who originally voiced Ellie in the video game, sings the
closing song that they play as they drag Joel's body
back to Jackson Hole.
Speaker 2 (43:37):
Also the waitress who is saved by Captain America. And yeah,
Marbles the Avengers.
Speaker 1 (43:43):
Iconic iconic role.
Speaker 2 (43:46):
Okay, that's it for game spoilers and that's it for
our episode. What an incredible, heartbreaking, unbelievable stuff, just like
gut punch of an episode of television. This week on
