(00:00):
Well, it is a great pleasurefor us today to have Steve Campbell from
your Indianapolis Colts, and we're gonnabe talking about the kickoff concert Lucas Oil
Friday, September eight. That'll befrom four to eleven. Steve, welcome,
Hey, thanks for having us,Thanks for having us. We're excited
about the show. So thanks foryour interest in telefolk about it. Oh
(00:21):
yeah, I mean yeah, thatshows. That shows all right, it's
gonna be cool. But how aboutthis Anthony Richardson getting the start? Yes,
what everybody's talking about right now.I mean, you know you took
the guy. You took the guyin the first round. Now he's the
guy, you know it. Justthrow him in there, just like Peyton,
just like Andrew Luck and you know, might be a little rough round
the edges. But without that firstyear with Peyton and having a rough time,
(00:43):
we wouldn't have ever gotten the wordsplayoffs. Excellent, excellent memory.
But we're excited about Anthony. SteveCampbell is with us. So Steve,
I know there's gonna be some memorabiliafrom the Colts forty years in India at
this now if you need it,I have an original no trim Till coltswind
(01:07):
t shirt with Bob and Tom onthe cover. So I grew up.
I grew up in Indianapolis too,so I'm very familiar with that. With
the whole Steve we were. Wewere in a programming meeting after the morning
show got off the air when thatwas conceived. You should have heard the
language in the meeting at that time. Anything, But there was nothing you
(01:30):
couldn't say at work. There wasno age, that's right. Yeah,
that little contest was born out ofa swamp in and off. Dude,
those were the days going way back. So you know what, Let's talk
about this little band that your bossis put together. In the band this
(01:52):
is this is like the rock androll Hall of Fame band being led by
by Paul Shaffer. That's what youguys have here, I tell you what
I mean. And a lot ofthese guys are are Jim Ursey's friends that
he's come to known over years becausehe's obviously got a passion for rock music.
He goes to concerts anytime he can, and so he's met a lot
of these folks and and put thisband together about a year and a half
(02:13):
ago. And you know it includesjust some rock legends. I mean,
everybody here in Indiana knows about KennyAaronoff and Mike kwan Chick from John Mellencamp's
band, so uh, you know, two of the best musicians in the
world. Kenny Wayne Shepherd who whoyou know again one of the best blues
guitarists on the planet. Mike millr emu as a bass player. Just
(02:35):
a great group of of musicians andand just a great group of people to
hang out with. Two there, there are a lot of fun as you
might imagine. On top of that, we got we got our special guests
that that that that we're that we'rehosting too. So obviously John Mellencamp is
going to be headlining the show. He's uh uh, you know, we
could go on and on about John, but everyone here in Indiana knows how
(02:58):
great he is. And then wegot great Steven Stills from you know who's
in the Rock and Roll Hall ofFame, not once but twice. Yeah,
and you know, one of thosefoundational members of you know, kind
of those foundational figures of rock music. And then a Wilson from Heart I
mean Eric you know again, allall the listeners, as you know,
and Wilson very well. And thena really cool guest is Peter wolf from
(03:22):
the jaj Yeah, yeah, hewould. They were one of my favorites
back in the back in the eighties. You know, I was. I
was an MC kid of the MTVgeneration. So so I remember Jake alsband
very well and Peter Wolfe joined usin Boston at our show in Boston a
couple of weeks ago and was justelectric. So it got a great show.
(03:43):
I mean, it's it's it's it'sgreat. It's got all these rock
legends in it, and on topof it, it's free. Man.
So you don't I don't need Idon't need to tell you, Steve Campbell's
vice president of communications, Indianapolis Colts. I don't need to tell you how
great, uh Jay Giles band FullHouse Live is, right you already you
already know that, dude. Yeah, one of the greatest live albums of
all time. What a band,What a band? Oh what a band?
(04:06):
And I love playing Centerfold on theradio because there are a lot of
young men that don't understand. Weused to keep our poor. We used
to keep it in between the mattressin the box spring. If I if
I would have had a phone withfifty billion pornographic videos. I would still
be in my room right now.He never moved out of the house.
(04:32):
I know what an iconic song?And I don't know, I don't know.
I've seen the set list. Idon't know if that's on the set
list yet, But what, God, what an iconic song? Man?
Oh, just tremendous. Steve Campbellis with us. We're talking about the
Colts kickoff concert Lucas Oil Stadium,Free Friday, September eighth, from four
to eleven infocolds dot Com Slash Concert. Steve, I've always wanted to ask
(04:56):
somebody this about a huge stadium likeLucas Oil for lack of a better word,
For lack of a better word, have you guys ever had stowaways,
somebody that hides in the building andthen you don't find him till the next
day. Oh wow, that's agreat question. Put it this way.
(05:16):
I've not heard of that happening herein Indianapolis, but it would not surprise
me that in some stadium or somearena somewhere, Yeah, that's happening right.
Well, well I'm gonna try itthis year. So if you see
a tall redhead hiding under a cokestand. Just kick me and I'll get
up and leave. Now, yougot it, Steve, I don't.
I don't want to get too deep, do you do? You know David
(05:39):
Prosser, I do not. Okay, he's been he's been a long time
engineer there and you know, kindof in charge of all the way,
yeah, at the stadium. Yeah, yeah, okay, okay, I
thought if you were talking about someoneelse, I'm at the stadium. Yeah,
come across them. I don't workwith them too much. Yeah he
was. He goes all the wayback to the Dome days. But that
(05:59):
Gunner, that's Fat Johnny's brother.Yeah, and he's been with the Colts
for a very long time. Uh. And just to answer your question,
you don't want to run into DavidBrausser trying to hide out on Lucas Oil
State. I mean he should beatahead of security. The guy's got two
fists that look like brick walls.Yeah. Oh, I can only imagine.
But now let me get this aswell. But doesn't David, because
(06:21):
this is jess Hooker's dad, right, don Yeah, Now does he still
have control of the roof because Jessicatold us. At one point, only
Jim er Say and only her fatherDavid had the code or the fingerprint scan
that will open or close the roof. Only those two. Well, as
(06:41):
far as the actual logistics of openingit, you know that's that's done at
the stadium, but that the calldoes come from from from the top.
You know whether we're gonna have theroof open or not. I mean we
consult, We consult with folks onthe football side and check the weather forecast
and all that stuff. But yeah, the ultimate call does come from the
top. We are speaking with SteveCampbell and we're excited about the start of
the Seriously, yeah, go ahead, don't go ahead. What would you
(07:05):
rather be? Would you what wouldyou rather have? Would you rather be
the governor of Indiana? Or wouldyou be would you want to be the
guy that was on that short listto be able to open or close the
roof at Lucas Oil Stadium. Imean, well, I know where I'm
going. Well you don't, butwell I'm gonna go the other way because
(07:27):
don you know what I think aboutpolitics and everything, I'd be the governor
and we'd pay teachers double cops infireman. I am running on the teacher,
cops and fireman platform. That wouldbe it. The choir. Well,
here's your here's your gubernatorial or candidategunner, the burn gunner feeling whatever,
(07:49):
feeling the burn. I'll tell I'lltell you what. I'm looking at
a map of Lucas Oil right now, and I think I know where I'm
going to spend the night. Sothere you go a lot of nooks and
crannies there, There are a lotof mists and crannies. There are lists
of miss and grannies. But doso after our own wrist. That is
so funny. No, we're not. We're absolutely not. No, No,
(08:13):
I'm not kidding about David Prosser. If he finds you in there trying
to hide, you wish you wouldhave went on home. So there's that,
right, So this is this isgonna be a lot of fun.
Steve. I know that there's gonnabe some new food this year that came
out in the Star. Were youable to taste some of the new food
or can you talk about that alittle bit? At Lucas Oil? Oh?
Yeah, so so yeah, wehad every year we do this this
(08:37):
little culinary showcase because every year we'retrying to introduce new items, new food
items, new beverage items, newamenities at the stadium. And so yeah,
we've we've got some uh some somegreat new local partners. We try
to focus on local, local restaurantsand local partners and local food, local
sourcing, all that type of stuff, because I mean, hey, it's
cheaper, be it's uh you know, it's good. It's good for our
(09:01):
state too, so to be local, and it's it's a lot more efficient
getting the stuff, getting the stuffto us. So uh so yeah,
so we we've got a lot ofnice new item. Uh you know,
the best thing I had, Ithink was they had these these uh these
burgers that are going to rotate. These hot dogs and hamburgers are going to
rotate depending on what team we're playing. Like for instance, you can you
(09:22):
can get like a jambalaya topping whenwe're playing the Saints. Oh wow.
And you know, so so wewhich we try to find those those those
regional uh those regional tastes and regionalflats or whatever team we're playing. Well,
once again, this is going tobe fantastic. Oh we have to
mention to you, Steve talking aboutfood, this is funny. Don and
I interviewed Tony George's chef one time. This is like fifteen years ago,
(09:46):
and Donna Don asked the brilliant question, what is Tony's favorite mail at the
track? And the chef said,uh, really, it's just a hot
dog? And then Don said, they don't need you for that, So
this I could do that I couldtake care of. Right, So Tondy
had a chef and he's eating hotdogs at the speedway. Come on,
(10:09):
yeah, you know he needs somebodyto whip him up a lobster roll whatever
those are out there. So Steve, Jim Urner was nearly killed by a
lobster roll at the track. Idid. It's an old story. It's
an old story. But Steve,so, how's how's the boss doing?
Jim? Or say, excited aboutthe season and what is it like working
(10:31):
for one of the best sports ownersin the country. I tell you,
well, first of all, he'sextremely excited about this season. I mean,
you know, as you talked about, you know, we got Anthony
absolutely fourth this year, new headcoach, new offensive staff, so you
know it's kind of a new airand Colts football, so we're we're all
excited to see see what happened? You know, you know Anthony is he's
a rookie. He just turned twentyone. So we know we're gonna we're
(10:54):
gonna bring him along in a smartway and in a in a in a
slow and steady way. But buthe's gonna jump out there, you know,
on game one and and show it'swhat he can do. Uh.
I can't wait. Yeah, well, yeah, we can't wait either.
I think I think he's going tobe an electric player. Yeah, but
yeah, he's our guy. Imean, they picked him to be the
guy. So just put him outthere, man, and it's good.
(11:16):
You know, like you said,he's a rookie, there's gonna be things
that go wrong, but man, there's gonna be some brilliance. You're gonna
see brilliance out of this guy.Just I am. I'm more excited about
this year than I don't know when. I mean, you know, well,
I was really excited about that yearwhen we were going in and maybe
it was like late August into thevery early part of September at a preseason
(11:37):
game, and I was so excitedabout the season. And then about twenty
minutes letter Andrew Luck retired and we'vebeen stuck in a ditch for the last
seven years. That was a veryvery interesting night being on the job that
night. So but yeah, butnow you know, you draft a quarterback
that that high, that early,Yeah, the fans are gonna have certain
(11:58):
certain expectations. And you know again, you know, rookies have to come
in and learn the league. Theynot only have to learn the system and
how to play on the field, but they have to learn how to be
a pro and have to learn howto navigate the ins and out in the
business of the league. Yeah,it's a lot to throw it. It's
a lot to throw at twenty oneand twenty two year old young men.
But but but Anthony seems to havehis head on his head on straight,
(12:22):
hard worker, real humble kid,and he's ready to get going. Yeah.
Absolutely, if you can, ifyou can get a message to him
from Stuck and Gunner, just justsimply this, get rid of the ball,
don't take the hits. There's nothingwrong with throwing it to the coach
on the sideline if it ain't gonnawork out, nothing wrong with it.
Man, That's where went wrong. He was just taking those hits and he
(12:45):
was just getting hurt so much andand and Richardson could be our guy for
a couple of decades. You know, it's just got to take care of
him. Yep, that's exactly right. And that's that's what he's working on
now. And you know he's he'sa big guy, you know, so
he's It's funny because when you lookacross the line, you see a guy's
the same size, he's looking ata linebacker. He's the same size as
that guy. Yeah, but youbut again, you have to be smart.
(13:09):
You have to be because you know, if you if you want to
have a ten fifteen year career, you got to be smart, dude.
Absolutely, And don you know it'sa tradition usually when the Colts quarterbacks turned
twenty one, you and I takehim to the Alley Cat and Broad Ripples.
Right. I've been to the AlleyCat many many times, and I
think we'll keeping me out of therefor right now. That's probably a good
(13:30):
idea. You know, they've idea. They've expanded, they've expanded the Alley
Cat a little bit. But thatplace, the old Alley Cat, was
so small. I only I onlywent to the bathroom once at the Alley
Cat, and there was like threethree enormous people backed up against the door
because there was no way to go, nowhere to go. I had to
(13:50):
pound on the door for like tenminutes before somebody let me out of the
bathroom. Hey the Alley Cats one, that's that's that's that's a classic place.
They're Indianapolis, So shout out toall the folks over there. Yeah
you got that right well, Steve, Thank you so much for your time
and again. The Colts kickoff concertLucas Oil Stadium Friday, September eighth,
(14:11):
from four to eleven. The JimErs Band, Stephen Stills and Wilson of
Hart, Peter Wolf of Jay Gilesand Centerfold Fame and then the headliner will
be John Mellencamp And you know what, the Boss can sing too, So
it's fun to listen to Jim singas well. Steve. Yeah, he'll,
he'll, he'll jump up on stagefor a couple of songs. He
(14:33):
I think he knows what his whathis sweet spot is, so he comes
up for a couple of those songsand lets the band go. And Wilson's
not gonna let him take the leadvocals on Crazy on You or a Right
No One, No One, cantake those vocals. But hey, all
(14:56):
right, one final question, onefinal question. As part of the cold
Artifacts and Memorabilia display, is theregoing to be a Mayflower moving truck anywhere
in the building? Oh? Man, that's that's that's an awesome question.
You gotta get one, dude, you gotta get one. That's pretty great,
I tell you. Hey, youknow this is this is the fortieth
(15:18):
season in Indianapolis, So I mean, so if there's ever that might be
the time. Oh my god,I would laugh so hard. That's great.
Well, Steve, if you could, uh would like to before the
show arrange a meeting was stuck inGunner and mister Erson. We could do
it at his office. That's fine. If we can do a face to
face and if he's too busy, well we'll settle for Jimmy Maddog made us.
(15:41):
That'll work. You didn't get thattogether at all times. Now,
especially since he's attired, you canget pretty much anytime, right, Yeah,
you could find him. He's inhis backyard with a six pack sitting
next to him, living the line. Yeah, so there's a good there's
how you get Jimmy mad Dog madeus to a meeting. Hey, let
me buy you a beer. Isan IndyCar going like, oh my goodness,
(16:06):
so much fun, Steve Campbell,And we look forward to this and
where again could people get the freetickets? Get their free tickets at colts
