(06:42):
listen, we we had a greattime Part one chatting it up with s
O and uh Dart Adams. Parttwo we got John Annix stopping by along
with ed O G. I mean, what more else can be said?
We got some more Boston hip hopon deck DJ three sixty piece together some
some great listen Part one Part one, I was in a time machine going

(07:04):
back to Philip Flavors. Show tonsof those songs from Mix one. We
used to fucking play the shit outof that back in the day when we
were at FAU and some of thosesongs I haven't heard in probably fifteen years,
so that was very enjoyable and lookingforward to this mix as well.
I haven't even heard it yet,so I always like surprises when the episode

(07:25):
drops, and actually kind of preferit that way, Andre, even though
I love our little huddle up beforethe show, a little huddle huddle,
do a little preview of the music. It's nice to be, you know,
surprised here and there. I gotto say the one liners on episode
one thirty six, keV, We'reas good as it gets brought. Yeah,
that's what Kev's notorious for, thosethose one liners that come out of

(07:46):
nowhere that give you a laugh. So look, we have plenty of that
today. We got my boy JohnAnick on the show. We also got
legendary ed Og. So between JohnDart Adams and so Terrek, there is
not much air left in this room. So Edogs hopping a flight to Parish.
So we got him for a verybrief time and we're gonna have him

(08:09):
back on the show at a laterdate. But we wanted to include him
in this because it was important andquite honestly, to me, when you
think Boston hip hop, Edog's theguy you think of. I mean,
his name is synonymous with that, and it was very important to include him
in this episode. This is parttwo. We have one mix, we
have two interviews, and this islike the Chef's kiss to our Boston tribute.

(08:31):
So we're getting a lot of greatfeedback already and I know you guys
are going to enjoy this, especiallythe conversations. All these interviews will be
available on the Debo channel and withoutfurther adom and pass the mic to Andre
Pop Pop Fizz Fizz, the Commonwealthof mass has been represented. Happy to
bring this tribute to an end.I will say this going forward, one

(08:52):
interview at a time. It's hardenough getting Wu Tang to the studios,
let alone Boston's fine Us on apodcast. So with that said, the
response to the show has been tremendous. I know we did your city proud.
So thanks for all the love thefeedback. At this stage, I'm
done, Wade. Let them knowwe keep the tea party moving. One
thing I really like about this showis these are two very different interviews with

(09:16):
two very different figures in the Bostonscene. With John, this kind of
reminds me when we had put PeterRosenberg on because we got a professional broadcaster
who knows a little bit about alot and that always makes for interesting conversation,
good vernacular which I know, Yeah, I appreciate it, aw and

(09:39):
we share a common interest in oneof our favorite groups from the BK Uptown
Connection. Don't spoil it. Don'tspoil it. That's true, so good.
And then of course we got youknow, one of the godfathers of
Boston hip hop and listen, edOg. I've always loved since the very
first time I saw that video forI Gotta Have It. That is one

(10:01):
of maybe five songs that I knowevery single word too, and I could
wrap the whole song, that's howimportant that song was to me. And
another thing that I've always appreciated aboutEdo a couple of things. Number two,
genuine, nice dude. It's gonnacome through. You're gonna recognize that
he's a genuine dude. We hada chance to hang out in Milwaukee several

(10:24):
years ago. Actually it's pronounced EmiliaWalk. And then number two, the
guy's got a good ear for beatsand every time he puts out music,
the production is on point and hedoes have a signature sound. So this
is a pretty monumental moment for theshow and the icing on the cake for
a supreme tribute. So with allthat being said, enough of our yapping.

(10:46):
Let's get to the rap and watchRoger do a thing. We started
off twenty twenty three completing our JayDilla tribute, and then we gave you
seventeen more episodes, including the UltraTrip, the True go A Tribute,
the five part Nineties Flashback series. We hit you with the Chef Special,
The Reset, and the NYC Airplayseries, and we still have one more

(11:11):
episode on deck before we close outthe year. But we have to thank
all our listeners for hanging with usall season long. Your support means everything,
and to our Patreon members, thankyou as well. We know this
has been a trying year for manyof us, but your contributions are much
appreciated and go a long way inmaking this show special. So thank you,

(11:33):
and now let's start the show.Ladies and gentlemen. We have a

(11:54):
special guest. Well really, he'snot in studio. This is a pretty
unorthodox take of personal interview. You'llknow because we usually talk to these guys.
So what how long? At leasttwo hours? I mean, we
can't get them off the damn interview. So when it's a ten to fifteen
minute interview, you know something isoff. But nonetheless, we have Tog.
He's the king of Boston hip hop. The name is anonymous with Boston

(12:16):
hip hop. The legendary Eto waskind of enough to answer some of our
questions we had sent him. He'sin Paris, but he was kind enough
to shoot us back these answers thanksto modern technology, so it's kind of
like he's on the show in realtime. But it was so important to
include him on this Boston hip Hoptribute episode that while it may be a
little out of the norm for takeit personal, it was crucial to have

(12:37):
him, especially the man of thehour at Og. Now, we had
to have him, that's for sure. So what we did is we actually
sent him questions he's going to answer. So enjoy this little ten minute journey
into Edog. Ed You started inthe mid eighties. That was an elementary
Drey was finished in college. Youwere known as ed Rock from the Fresh

(13:00):
to Impressed crew, and you droppedthe debut in ninety one Life of a
Kid in the Ghetto, fucking classic. Be a Father to your Child was
the hit, but I Gotta HaveIt seemed to be the one that put
Boston on the map. That year, you had albums from NWA Ice,
Cute Tribe Dela, Don't forget aboutthe debuts of Cypress Hill, Naughty Black

(13:24):
Sheet, mainden source, DJ Quick. Pop radio was fucking dominated by chub
rock, MC hammer and ghetto boys. My mind's playing tricks on me,
So I want to know, youknow, looking back, do you feel
that your classic debut album received innational attention and rightfully deserved. Yeah,
I definitely feel the album got allthe attention that it deserved. You know,

(13:50):
we had about three singles off thatalbum, I Gotta Have It,
which went number one on Billboard,Bugaboo which which was the top ten,
and be a Father to Your Child, which was in the top ten.
We stayed on the charts for weeks, and those singles drove the album sales.
So yeah, I mean I thinkwe was, you know, where

(14:13):
we needed to be. Of course, it could have been more, but
you know, it worked out forthe best ed real quick. Your MTV
raps, in my opinion, playedan important role in the early success.
I mean, especially exposing your videosthe people all over What was it like
being a part of that original YOera and having videos that were celebrated.

(14:33):
MTV played a huge role in,you know, breaking hip hop into the
mainstream, and I got to haveit went number one on the TV raps
charts. We rocked with you knowEd, Lover Doctor, dre fab five.
Freddy did all the shows. ButI don't want to forget Video Music

(14:56):
Box, which played a huge role, and of course Rap City, which
was the rival to your TV rapsand BT, so you know, those
all played pivotal roles. It wasn'tjust your TV raps. In ninety three
my favorite year, you drop Roxburyat the time, labelmate Diamond D did

(15:18):
some of the production. I thinkhe did like five out of the twelve
tracks, one of them arguably yourbiggest hit, Love Comes and Goes.
Tell me about that track specifically,I want to know what it was like
making it. Did you hear thebeat first? Who came up with the
Arthur Conley sample? Tell me allabout it? Yeah, the Roxbury O
two one one nine album. Diamondwho was a labelmate my A and R,

(15:41):
suggested that we worked together and youknow, we made some magic.
The Love Comes and Golds song.I actually wasn't even gonna use that song.
It was shout out to my homegirl man' and I'm blanking right now
on her name. But she wasin the studio with us and she was

(16:07):
the one that suggested that I usethat track. Man Diamond played it and
she was going crazy. Nepher titshit. She was going crazy. She
was like, Yo, you betteruse this joint. This is super fire,
and that became, you know, the classic song after album off that
album. So shout out to NepherTiti Bay Area. You know, she

(16:30):
pushed me to do that in thestudio. She was also a label make
she was on Mercury, so yeah, it was just it's her, you
know. And then once I heardthe hook, I didn't know anything about
the loops, the samples or anything. Diamond that was all him with that
joint, So you would have toask him about that. Your early producer,
Joe Mansfield, obviously part of theVinyl Reanimator, is really important part

(16:55):
of the hip hop fabric, alsoowns Get on Down Records. Working with
him for so long, I reallywant to hear your best Joe Mansfield story,
My best Joe Mansfield story, Man, When we met in eighty nine,
we immediately clicked. Man. Hehad the beats, I had the
rhymes. I had a bunch ofsamples and different records too that I have

(17:17):
brought to the table and had himsample. So you know, I think
the relationship on making that classic recordwas my best story about him. I
don't want to give away any ofour ninety secrets and stuff that we were
doing in New York when we wereyoung man, but I could say this

(17:38):
the way. If you know Joenow, he is absolutely nothing like he
was back then. As I saidof the intro, your name is synonymous
with Boston hip hop. When Ithink Boston hip hop, you know,
I immediately think of guys like Guruand yourself. But when you think of
Boston hip hop, what comes tomind out Because we definitely put Boston on

(18:03):
the hip hop map. I meanGuru r Ip, my brother. He
moved to New York and was rappingBrooklyn, and you know, we was
the ones really holding it down.US and Almighty Rso made men earlier guys
like TDS Mob. When I thinkof Boston, I would say I think

(18:25):
of guys like TDS Mob because theywere the first rap group. I've ever
seen their video being played on RapCity. I don't know what this world
is coming to. So those arethe guys that I seen that I knew
were from the neighborhoods, you know, and they inspired me to make uh

(18:47):
you know what I'm saying, toknow that I could really do that by
seeing their video on Rap City. All right, I'm gonna ask you the
same questions we asked Esoteric and Johnas well as Dart Adams. Listen,
pick two and only two and don'tchoke in your back yet when you answer
Wade Bogs, Robert Parrish, LarryBird, Tom Brady, Pedro Martinez,

(19:11):
and Jim Rice. That list iskind of skewed. Man, I'm gonna
give my own two. I'm gonnago with Paul Piers, who's my favorite
Celtic of all time, and I'llgo I'll put Tom Brady in there,
of course, man, because he'sthe he's to go. All right,

(19:33):
fair enough, let's do movies now, Boston Movies. Pick two and only
two, The Town, The Departed, Goodwill, Hunting, Mystic River,
The Fighter, and Gone Baby Gone. I gotta go with Mystic River and
Gone Baby Gone because our song specialteams is in that when Slain is driving

(19:55):
to the Pedophiles house, he's playingour joint. Man. You know what
I'm saying. And check that out, Jery Miller. No, it's a
coke fairy. Open up, Iget the money right here. Mom,
you think you're gonna havend me moneyon the fucking porch? Open the door
all right before we let you go, so you can check out the Moulin
Rouge. You just dropped this album, We Do Good. It's a great

(20:18):
album. It's an album that prettymuch reminds people that Boombap is still live
and well. I love the energyon this album. Tell the listeners what
they can expect from this album. Not only that, I want to know
how you came up with the wholeconcept of the Greg Nice Dance. Yeah.
I dropped a new album, WeDo Good. It's all all streaming

(20:41):
platforms. I do have hard copiesas well with vinyl and cassettes. The
new album many definitely a breath offresh air. I started producing again.
I produced like six joints on there, the Great Nice Joint. I always

(21:03):
wanted to do do that. Ihad the idea of doing that for a
long time. You know, Ijust reached out to Greg. That's my
big hip hop bro. I've knownhim since the late eighties as my cousin
Teddy Ted was their DJ. Soyou know, I rock with them forever.
And you know I always wanted todo the Greg Nice dance. Man.

(21:23):
I always thought it was something Iseen him perform, perform with him
a billion times, and that danceneeded to be brought to life. Yeah,
let's get it. I can't fakeit, my frankness, I'm so
gracious. You can't take it.You make shift. He's so anxious.
Let your women take a ride onmy spaceship and watch me set fire the

(21:44):
wet blankets. In the mid twothousands, we was puffing fifty. You
got a lot of talent. Youdo nothing with it. I'm rolling up
a wood, she roll up aspot. So take a long walk off
a short cliff. I live inexciting life, y'all. Feel with bought
him the game warned for me,you float yours coring touring, fuck with
me, wrapping post boredom because youfake sweet like or them trees, Josh

(22:07):
Gordy, your rules, ignore them, the facts, the store them,
the black Man, the booming.Yeah, they state boarding cameras, Don't
Fight Crime, Niggaz, Greg innocHey, It's Greg and I and G
from the Beetown to the Buggie down. This is how we get down Hey.

(22:30):
And the new album, Man,you can, you know, just
expect a real classic boom back album. Man do we do good? If
you read between the lines, it'syou could. It spells out l O
G. Kirk Gazelle. Got someproduction on there, my Man Geronimo X,
my Man Kemp, my Man MickeyTorch. So it's a really well

(22:56):
rounded album. My Man King Magneticis also on there, my Man's seventh
son on a song called Hope, which is my favorite song on the album.
Make sure y'all check that joint outand yeah, man, just go
get the new album and for twentyfour tours. A bunch of new projects

(23:17):
coming instrumentals. I got an instrumentalwith my girl called Sample She produces as
well. I got another instrumental albumcoming out called boom Jazz. I got
more actual records coming out with myman Tone Spliff Out in La, my
Man Flip, my Man DJ Yoda. I got a bunch of projects coming

(23:41):
so, you know, just lookingforward to all of that man hip hop
is alive and well and we're stillpushing that rail. And there you have
it, ladies and gentlemen. That'st Og. This is very new for
us. I mean, I've neverdone an interview where we've had to record
the questions and receive the answers. But I think it came out really cool,

(24:02):
and I appreciate Edog for stopping by. I know he has plenty to
do out in gay patter, sowhen he comes back to the States,
we will do a real interview.Definitely check out the new album We Do
Good, really awesome, and hopeyou guys are enjoying this Boston hip hop
tribute listen in the future. It'snot like this is something I want to
do from now on. I knowtechnology allows us to have all of these

(24:26):
things to do from multiple places inthe world, but there's something real special
about having questions asked on the flythat sometimes where you can get into stories
that maybe sometimes they don't want toindulge into too much, but nonetheless has
really turned out well. Appreciate Edogfor stopping in. Another thing, this
is a man who's been doing thisfor a long time. I'm talking,

(24:51):
I don't know what thirty five fortyyears professionally. I mean that's really impressive.
Do yourself a favor, Go outand cop this new record. Show
your support. That's really what thisplatform is all about, spreading the word,
getting that out there, and showingsupport to the artists that you love
while they're still here. So edI appreciate your time again, brother,

(25:12):
I think it's time to get insome music for this show. Absolutely mixed
three, my favorite of all ofthem, Mixed three. And then stay
tuned from my man John Anick,Stop him by peace, what's up?
This is ed Og and we dogood and you listening to the Boston edition
of Take It Personal. Don't takeit personal, but do take it personal.

(25:42):
We hope you've enjoyed our interview withEdog. Now let's get back into

I mean that ship shot. Youknow why you want to kick that

(01:31:08):

(01:33:31):
I like to cool it with Nick. Him and Chickens has the type
of tip book on to call youjimp up on chick come on, oh
jiping head. He don't excite youthat. I know what chicks we go

give my suit before I take thetrip cause I love the skinny depth.

(01:33:53):
Dude. We gotta going on,dude, dude, we gotta coming on.
I got what's going on? Isign the bagasino from a Bacistella.

(01:34:21):
Coming up is special guest John Anickto discuss all things Boston and some UFC
stuff as well. All right, ladies and gentlemen, we have a special
guest. We have my man JohnAnick from the UFC. He is like
the Vin Scoli of the USC andand a lot of you guys know who

(01:34:43):
he is. But what I wantyou to know on this episode is the
treat because he's a Bostonian, areal Bostonian, and he's a hip hop
head. So I thought who betterto have on this Boston tribute than my
man John. Welcome John, Thankyou brother. And I don't know if
I'm stepping out of line here early, but you and I live in the
same damn neighborhood, so we haveto figure out a way. I have

(01:35:04):
a new studio. I'm too afraidto use all these buttons. Yeah,
we have to figure out a waythe next time for you and me to
be sitting across from each other andactually looking at each other. For sure,
man, for sure. I meanI see you all the time running
in the morning, but we don'thave the stopping chat. One of these
days we'll shop it up and we'lldo a face for free. For sure.

(01:35:25):
Yes, I wouldn't you say,John is the spliff star of the
UFC. He's like the ultimate hypeman on the mic once upon a time
up in Jersey. Yo, Iwish Redman was here, but we're well
represented in Newark, New Jersey. Here tonight, USC two eighty eight capacity
crowd on hand. You know,I'm repping the Boston Celtics. We had
to go hard on the paint withthat, but we're excited to be here

(01:35:46):
in New Jersey, first time infour years. We will see you live
on pay per view ten pm Eshirt prelim prior. Let's go. Well,
I don't know if I can't,I mean, I said Vince Skolli
because I mean I'm a baseball guyfirst and foremost, and to me,
like Vince is anonymous of baseball hypeman, I don't know. I mean,
how would you, how would youclassify your Well, let's just say,

(01:36:13):
Vince Scully, no matter how longI do play by play, I
will never be as good as thatguy. And think about just the simplicity
of that statement, but it's rootedin a lot of truth, right,
Like there were guys who maybe wereso good in different parts of sports media
that had me pivot to another area. Right. Even Colin Cowherd was so
good in my mind as a soloradio act that I was like, I

(01:36:35):
don't want to sit there and listento myself for three hours. I'd rather
listen to that guy. If youwant to give me a partner, great,
you know. So it's hard forme to sort of categorize myself.
Certainly. I think people who listento my podcast, no, I'm a
high energy guy who's a little bitof a lunatic. So yeah, I
mean I think that it comes naturallyfor me to hype the UFC and you
know, be a promotional guy. However, hyperbolic I can be at times.

(01:36:59):
But I love the sport and uh, it's an exciting time obviously to
be in mixed martial arts, eventhough you know, I grew up in
Boston and wanted to be the voiceof the Red Sox. So here we
are. Wow. So you're onyour way to the arena. You're in
the car just to tee up theshow? Here? What are you bumping
in the car on the way tothe arena. So I'm usually with a

(01:37:19):
bunch of other people and it's peopletalking and there's nothing going on. You
know, but I guess now thatI think about it and coming on your
show, it wouldn't be a badidea. Bruce Buffer meditates in the dressing
room. Now, I can't getto a meditative state. I don't know
about you guys, but I supposelistening to hip hop or listening to reggae

(01:37:41):
or even something chill would be uh, would be something that might be good
for my head's face as opposed tofucking gossip mongering with the fellow commentators on
the way to the arena. Sowell, let's let's go back, because
I'm sure a lot of people knowyou're from Boston, but I don't know
if a lot of people truly knowthat you're a die hard hip hop head.
And correct me if I'm wrong. But didn't you tell me, like

(01:38:03):
before all this you wanted to bea rapper, Like it was like that
pop All right, Well, Itried hard to get the freestyle rap going,
you know, in uh, incars, Volkswagens and Whalend Massachusetts.
I would say I'm like three forthree hundred lifetime in terms of spitting one

(01:38:23):
out cleanly, So thank you gotpitvoted in another direction in terms of using
whatever O rating skills, I havethree for three hundred, but I'll never
forget, you know, the timesthat I was able to execute one cleanly
start to finish. But yeah,I mean it just came naturally to me.
I always thought I was tougher thanI was, which I think aligned
with the music I was listening to. And uh, it's amazing to now

(01:38:43):
try to play nineties hip hop tomy daughters and uh, certainly some songs
stick and some don't, but uh, yeah, I mean I listened to
it all. I had friends whowere much more ambitious in terms of trying
to be rappers, you know,Richie Marshall and Matt Hubble now Matt James.
You know, they were really tryingto get into it, and I
just remember being very young, fifteenyears old, i want to say,

(01:39:05):
and watching them at the Strand inDorchester trying to make it and the crowd's
chant and go white Boy, andit was really cool to watch all of
that. So, you know, yeah, I've been into it for a
long time and definitely defer to peoplethat were better rappers than me. What
was your first boss in hip hopmoment that kind of made you feel like,
you know, I'm a part ofthis culture. I'm a part of

(01:39:27):
this the state and what it standsfor in the world of hip hop.
Well, it was that moment atthe strand, to be sure, it
was like, wow, so thisis really a part of the culture.
But if I'm being totally truthful,Andre I never got embedded the way you
know maybe I could have and wouldhave liked to have. And part of
that's probably because I didn't live inthe city, you know, and I
wasn't attending hip hop shows regularly. You know. That one stands out to

(01:39:48):
me because they got a crowd thatwasn't initially behind them on their side.
But I only saw them perform aboutthree times, you know. But Edog
when he did that song about KennyFlorian, we are trying to actively track
down that goddamn track right now,but he did a track about Kenny Florian
then in two thousand and eight orso, and that sort of was the

(01:40:10):
synergy and connective tissue I'd probably beenlooking for my whole left. Well,
if you need anything from Eto Iam, I could definitely help you out
there. It's his birthdayday, soshout out to Edog. Happy birthday.
So we'll take us back. Youtold us the strand what around what time
was this? This is like thelate nineties, mid and early nineties,

(01:40:31):
early ninety two, ninety two?Okay, I'm old. I mean I'm
born nineteen seventy eight. Well yeah, you may be old. But Andre
Andre a fossil. Okay, weare all pumping. What are we?
Forty four forty five? So Ithink we're probably all all in the same
age bracket, exception of Gilligan's Islandover there, so ninety two, so

(01:40:55):
ninety two, ninety two. I'mtrying to think what was popping in ninety
two? Well, you had Edog, right, that was ninety one Mark
and Mark was huge, So Imean that kind of like help Boston in
a way, whether it was somethingyou guys want to own up to take
us back to, like John's earlychildhood with hip hop? What was your
first teat Like what tape made yousay? Okay, I love this this

(01:41:17):
music. So it's hard for meto timeline it and contextualize it, right,
and knowing that I was going tobe talking to you boys, I'm
sort of trying to jog my memoryand maybe some resin on the brain stem
or whatever. But like I rememberlisten to ill Al Scratch in nineteen ninety
four. This dude, So didyou tea that up? Jay? No?

(01:41:39):
So John, I'm sorry to cutjust so you know il Al is
one of my guilty pleasures. Andtalk about ill Al Scratch on the show,
Like every episode I listened to theshow. I will here TOOFO but
for full before you do your gigs, you can listen to the show.

(01:41:59):
Yeah, so proceed, But Ilska, I knew I like you man ill
Yeah, I mean Onyx was abig influence. Like I remember being in
ceramics class in high school and Imade a bust of fredro Star's face,
right, I mean that's obsession, right, and I thought it was the
coolest thing. Kepta winby forever, you know, bro Thankfully No, I
didn't get him to sign it,but you know, Onyx, Redman,

(01:42:21):
Tupac for sure, easy. KeithMurray was probably my favorite. But you
know these guys, you know thatI reference had me listening to like and
maybe I have the timeline off,but like question Marcus Asylum and all this
underground stuff that that you know, never would have been on my radar.
But Keith Murray, what's happening?Uh? He has a verse that's like

(01:42:45):
two minutes that is just on adifferent level. And some of these songs
obviously are hard to find. Ipushed them on my daughters and hopefully eventually
my son is best I can.And you know, it's fun to be
in this role with all of thiship hop. Now. So when you
say Keith murh, I immediately assumethat you smoked lots of weed in the
nineties because people that mention Keith Murrayyou really are big weedheads? Am I?

(01:43:09):
Am? I wrong? So ifI'm trying to call an NFL football
game in my life, you know, I probably shouldn't go too deep on
that question. You know, beforeI do interviews, oftentimes I would say
one out of every three I'll getpre interviewed and they'll say, hey,
is there anything we can't ask you? And I always say, absolutely not.
You can truly ask me anything. It's up to me to not perjure

(01:43:30):
myself. But I should probably fleethe fifth there. If I want to
call an NFL football game. It'sinteresting too, because like, let's say
I wanted to do a cannabis strandhow's this for an answer right, Let's
say I wanted to do my owncannabis strand. I've been pitched to Kilas
before, but maybe a cannabis strandmight be a better fit for me.
You know, I'm not necessarily goingto take that bait right now if I
ever want to call an NFL footballgame, but maybe we'll put something into

(01:43:53):
the air at some point in time. You never know. This bag guy
blend us pre rolls, he gota tequila, he got cleats, he
got a clothing lane. Coming outmuch more accepted. I think it is
fine. I just went to NewYork City. It's fucking everywhere, everywhere,
everywhere. Now you know, notto DV, But isn't it becoming

(01:44:15):
more accepted within your your industry itself? Great question. So I live in
Florida, where you can't gamble, you can't smoke weed or any of that,
right, as you know. Imean, certainly you can get around
it medicinally and otherwise, you know, But no, I mean I wouldn't
say that it's accepted in sports broadcastingterms. You know. I don't mean

(01:44:42):
in broadcasting, although I guess likethe UFC. You mean, yeah,
yeah, I think you know inthat realm. It's becoming more and more.
Yeah, I mean, Joe Roganis my broadcast partner, right,
and obviously he's pro cannabis. Youknow, I wouldn't say that Dana White
is all about it, right, you know, So sponsorships are a part
of you know, Yeah, it'sI mean, it's yeah, I guess

(01:45:03):
we're just we're definitely not there yet. No, I don't think so.
So we're not going to see TroyAikman lighted up on the next Monday Night
football now, I mean, withall the forward progression that we are having.
And it is interesting too because evenif you do like cannabis, when
you go to Vegas and New Yorkright now, you can't escape it,
whether you like it or not.So it's wild. It's the wild West,

(01:45:26):
are you guys? Hold them shit? Everything but Cole Caron and your
cock? What how about a nickelbanger? Oh? Fifteen bucks, little
man? Put that ship in myhand. Nong Nong Nong nong. You
mentioned Edog? So was Edog thefirst Boston rapper that you were aware of?

(01:45:47):
Yes, okay, yep? Andhis debut album I Gotta Have It?
Was that the one the pivotal momentfor for I guess you and Boston
hip hop. No, I meanI and it's like full veracity here.
No, I mean, it wasn'treally until my late twenties early thirties that
that stuff surfaced on my radar, you know. Okay, So you know,

(01:46:10):
with respect to that gentleman, andI went down a rabbit hole today,
rest assured, and some of thenew stuff is actually very good,
and we're so aligned. I thinkhe and I are very similar in age,
happy birthday. I think he's fiftythree today, if my research is
accurate. But you know, justin terms of where the genre is right
now relative to you know, whereit was however many years ago, you

(01:46:33):
know, now in the late ninetieswas a very pivotal moment for Boston hip
hop. It was this underground movementand you had acts like mister Lyff Acrobatic,
seven lem Esoteric. Were you awareof this movement at that time in
the late nineties, No, No, I was out of state. I

(01:46:53):
was in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, tryingto push ill out scratch on a bunch
of you know people from as inPa. Was it where my homies are?
I'll take you that sold you onIllel Scratch. Oh my gosh,
I mean it was just that entirethe amount of times I think if they,
gosh, if they were tracking howmany times I'd listened to those songs

(01:47:15):
at that time. Gosh, Idon't even know, you know. And
hey, I mean maybe it helpedin terms of all the writing for television
I have to do, But mygosh, you know, yeah, I
listened to that whole whole album soso much, and Keith Murray so much,
and you know, I even pulledout my case logic today and you

(01:47:36):
know, still have some of thesefor whatever goddamn reason. You know,
it's always nice when a UFC fighterlike walks out Onyx or Cypress Hill or
certainly Mob Deep shook One's Part tworight, But it isn't as often as
you would think. And I don'tknow if that just classifies me as old
Undrick to piggyback off Jay, whowas the first underground artist of Boston that

(01:48:00):
kind of raised the eyebrow for you. Again, I wasn't a big underground
hip hop fan. I really wasn't, you know. It wasn't honestly until
MMA Live in two thousand and eight, when Kenny Florian was aligned with special
teams, you know, so specialteams, and there you go. I
know, Sling and Jayson, Ithink, Okay, Jayson from the Creators

(01:48:23):
are there. I'm sure you're notthe only one, let's say that likes
hip hop, but are there otherheads quote unquote that you're aware of?
No doubt, but I think thatyou know it's mushroomed and music has mushroomed
to such an extent that I thinkeven the most ardent hip hop heads and
maybe you guys aren't in this group, but have let other things in.

(01:48:45):
And even for me, right,it's like I have to you know,
clean is obviously something that I don'tlike. I cuss in front of my
children, absolutely liberally, right, but I can't have them listening to cusses
all day. So my search oftentimesbegins with clean. Nowadays, you know
about it. It's always fascinating tonote what someone else listens to because it
makes you feel like. For instance, I'll give you a prime example.

(01:49:09):
Many years ago, maybe four orfive, Joe Rogan had Minie pas On,
which is kind of like in thatworld an obscure rapper, right,
He's like this underground rapper from Philly. In our world he's pretty popular,
but for the most part he's anobscure rapper. And it was so interesting
that here he is having this dialoguewith this guy for you know, two

(01:49:29):
three hours with a quote unquote undergroundrapper who kind of fits this mold of
what we're talking about here, withthis underground hip hop movement of the late
nineties. My father used to say, if if someone doesn't say the word
fuck, or if their name isan initial, don't trust them. Yeah,
that's a creepy one. Initials arecreepy. Yeah, but you never
know. It's like it's not ahard fast rule. No, I give

(01:49:53):
everyone the fast shake, but I'mlooking yeah hmm, yeah, So I
thought that was cool. It alwaystriggered me to think, like, all
right, are there other people yeahwho like hip hop like us? I
know he was older, but ishe a hip hop head? And I've
heard him talk about you know,he likes you know, like gangster rap
and you know, the typical eightystuff which is affected. But that was

(01:50:14):
interesting. Then he passed because heyeah, well, and I'm curious how
you guys feel about Vinnie pass becauseKenny Florian again talking about three time.
If you don't know UFC title Challenger, he never won the belt, but
three times he fought for the title. He's my podcast partner, and he
was the guy when I was liketwenty nine, thirty thirty one, I'm
almost fifty now, right, whowas talking to me about all of these

(01:50:35):
artists, right and putting all ofthis stuff back on my radar and probably
reigniting the hip hop fan within me, you know. So yeah, I
mean there's definitely an underbelly of guys. But even Kenny Florian right now,
fucking renaissance man. You know,it's like if you looked at the playlist
in his car right now, youknow, is it mcso Terek in his
last fucking twenty plays? I don'tthink so you brought up esoteric. Can

(01:50:57):
we talk about that story he toldme about the the check? Yeah,
okay, yeah, so you knowwhat, go ahead, it's your story,
you tell it. So Boston Gardenrap, just the instrumental, absolutely
fabulous. So we reached out tosee if we could use it as the
theme song for the Anak and Florianpodcast at beginning and end, and the

(01:51:20):
answer was yes, very graciously, and so we sent a care package of
merchandise. I don't even know wherethat is. Hopefully we're seeing. And
then we send a check, howeversmall, and you don't want to catch
the check, which is you knowwhatever, we'll send a new check.
We'll keep sending it. Maybe hewants a bigger check, you know,
but you're very grateful. The BostonGarden Rap is the theme song for the

(01:51:44):
Anticic and Florian podcast, and sohopefully all of our listeners are downloading that
and running to that and drinking tothat and doing whatever they do to that.
And yeah, I mean, Iguess it's just done on me one
day that if you don't ask,you know, this can't happen. So
yeah, we're very thankful for that. And anyone who listens to our show
has to hear that at the beginning. And then so so so cash a

(01:52:06):
check or you know, we getthe hip hop albums you liked. You
talk about Creep with Me El Scratch, which by the way, was really
kind of like an EP with likefive songs name the theme thing, like
every song sounds the same, Treatwith Me and Creep with Me in my

(01:52:28):
homies, like, but it wasgreat and it was agreed even if you're
large. I'm breaking you down little, this brittle it's not a really you
should be in the hospital. Imean, I don't know. I almost
know them more about like the tracknumbers than I do the names. Just
driving around however, stone right nineand fucking eleven and you know, well,
look it wasn't as mystical magical asKeith Murray's album. Okay, so

(01:52:55):
my buddy, actually Matt James, who I referenced, got Keith Murray.
It's the only time I've received acameo. I don't know if you guys
know what that is. Sure, yeah, but uh yeah, it's the
only time I've ever received a celebrityvideo from Keith Murray. Murray and that
was the only one that I everreceived and he wished the happy Birthday to
Matt James instead of maybe because hewas probably lifted because he's Keith Murray exactly.

(01:53:20):
But yeah, we got that KeithMurray video and it's in my phone.
We'll take it. Oh, wasthat recent because Keith Murray's had some
episodes in the most you know, yeah, I mean yeah, within the
last four years for sure. Okay, so you got you got that crazy
Keith Murray, Keith Keith Man Murray. That's the Keith Murray. Oh man,

(01:53:49):
oh hey, before I forget guys, Ill Scratch does have something new
and it's fucking heat. Is itYeah Together or is it just al Scratch?
Is it Homie's twenty twenty three?I think it's just out Scratch,
Dude. I loved ilol Scratch somuch. I had that Nike visor.
I wore it just like them inthe video. I was all right,

(01:54:11):
enough of Scratch boy, but it'srare that you find somebody else who's appreciative
of that great album. Hey,listen, guys, I'm still bugging on
the question Mark Asylum drop that was. I haven't heard that group name in
twenty five years. But I'm certainlynot sort of an embedded Boston local scene
hip hop guy to any degree, right, And yeah, I mean,

(01:54:35):
like oftentimes I thought that, like, you know, maybe one day I
have a goal to call an NFLfootball game. However dreamy that may be.
But one thing that I think isprobably more realistic not to denigrate my
own self there, is to releasea track, or at least to have
a verse on a track, right, you know, and you guys should

(01:54:58):
be a part of this. Right, we'd call a fucking one more sleep
whatever we call it, right,But this is something that that is certainly
a box. I think I cancheck easier within the next twelve months than
calling NFL football. Are you awareof Max Kellerman's video? Yes, he
was dope. Yeah, it wasgood. I was on public Access in
New York City at the time andhe had a show that was on after

(01:55:19):
mine and it was him as arapper, you know, and kind of
light boxing talk. But it was, uh, you know, it was
truly his passion is where he wantedto go with things. Yeah, I'm
sorry, huge wants to stay mycity. He's in a man who I
hate, a pitym like a branchof Vidim, got skills, got standing
up, got handstone, like thechamp from Panama, body dropped from body

(01:55:43):
shots, govicer box nor me forblocks shot. If you want to see
who the best be, come andtest me, to come and test me,
Come and test me. You gotstart him, get start from the
pull John in the South book,my flavor was going. My flavor was
god pH City City, but myneighborhood. Yeah, well yeah, certainly
a big part of it is mypassion, but I definitely don't want to

(01:56:05):
be the star in any sense, right I Ideally I want this track to
be something that I write about, you know, with as many UFC athlete
names as humanly possible as I canwork in there. And obviously I'm gonna
swear a bunch and it's gonna befucking fantastic. But that's sort of the
goal, is to put a bunchof UFC fighters in there, to put

(01:56:26):
some some shine on whatever other hiphop artists would be in that track,
try to get it on the UFC'sradar and see if we could blow the
thing up. You know, Ijust saw one purse. So we've done
several interviews on Google Meets and John. Since you've been on, there's been
thumbs up, there's been fireworks, there's been what the going I think,

(01:56:47):
I think you're going live, andyou've got some people who are listening.
The fireworks threw me off. Notgonna lie. Yeah, I can't even
I can't even cross my arms andhave my thumb be up. It's fucking
thumbs up. What is going on? It was the same thing with Pleas
Twer had the same thing. Ithink Keith Murray's listening to this fucking can't
get a personal podcat? Mother fuckis Keith Burby in the cloud? Go

(01:57:12):
'll be and we will last takeit personal podcat. I'm trying to turn
these reactions off. I'm gonna keepmy thumbs down. You know, we're
talking about the song that you wouldaspire to do, the kind of I
think that you know. In additionto the Max Kellerman one, there was
also a really good one from JohnCena. That ship was good. I

(01:57:34):
totally fifteen years ago, totally.I can run on the treadmill of that
all d damn your time, mytime now now you can't see me my
time now now it's the flint shot, little shot down down, you can't

(01:57:55):
see me my time. Gotti felloff. I'm still hot, not just
sell off buck money stack bat.Plus, I can't turn a swell off.
The franchise who a big fitness ALimus is automatic a win? The
Soldi hittos? Who you finished aSoldia? And I say, under you're
fighting. Plus I'm storming on.It comes like I'm thundering like it ain't
know when you breaking new kid,I'm hard nails. Plus I keep it

(01:58:16):
on lock like I'm part of thejail slaughtering stale competition. I got the
whole block pushing. They get onewith my division, but they go on
fishing with no break. Kitchen boyhood waiting. I got my soul straight.
I brush your mouth like cold Gate. I will say Special Teams did
a song I believe called Team Florianfor the aforementioned Kenny Florian, right,

(01:58:38):
and it was so good. Andthat's what I wish we could sort of
get to in terms of some ofthe walkout music, and Kenny never walked
out to that. It might nothave been approved at the time, but
hopefully we can track that down becausethat's sort of what I'm getting at,
right. I mean, they're talkingabout Kenny's elbows and his fighting style,
and it was it was masterfully done. It was I think you're old enough

(01:59:00):
to have an opinion on this. What do you think was the best walkout
song? Be it boxing UFC,gosh, man, were you old enough
to appreciate Tyson walking out to youknow, Terra Dome from Public Enemy or
yeah? Probably not? Gosh.I mean, there's so many different directions
to go, you know. It'slike, I guess I think more about

(01:59:20):
like so many UFC fighters hitting thetunnel for me, but it's not it's
not so much associated with with thesong. I mean, yeah, you
know Chuck with Alan Anderson Silva DMX, I guess would be the easy answer,
but yeah, no, there's nothingquite like it. Right, I've
thought long and hard about what Iwould walk out to. We've settled on

(01:59:40):
Breaking Neck by Buster Rhymes. Butit's a very difficult decision as to the
walkout song. What would you guyswalk out to? To me, it
was always terr Dome. I mean, there was nothing like you know,
Chuck d here's a ticket, here'syour ticket, and that wash yeah shit,
yeah. Tyson came out to Tupacthough too. I mean later ye

(02:00:01):
had a few. I don't know. Mine would be King of Scratch.
Honestly, I think the meanest rapsong of all time is fucking Shook Ones
Part two. Man, well itis. I'm gonna tell you another one.

(02:00:24):
I think King of Rock would bea dope ass walkout song. Dude,
It Shook Ones Part two has beenused by a lot of champions and
high level UFC fighters. Yeah,it's hard to go wrong with that,
for sure. You mentioned Rashan.I got to ask you because I don't
know this question and it and itblows my mind the amount of m m
A fighters that live in this area. Can you tell me why it seems

(02:00:47):
to be like a hub for mmA fighting? And when I say area
like South Florida for our listeners, this is you know, I'm Coconut Creek
and your Field and Boca. Whatis it about this area that a tray
all these guys females as well?Where are you from originally? Yeah,
I'm from Philly, So you know, I would almost bounce the question back

(02:01:09):
at you. I think a lotof the answers would parallel, just in
terms of the weather and the qualityof life and uh and things like that.
Certainly, I can tell you thereare a lot of Brazilians who come
to the US. They go toCalifornia and then they realized that Florida is
more in line with their homeland andand it's also closer. Obviously it's a
direct flight from Miami to Rio andSouth Flow. Look, make you beg

(02:01:33):
for you crazy man. She's ahand three years old. Not that one
man, that one young man who'sthe fucking carnal Okay, so I think
a lot of Brazilians end up downhere, and there are just a lot
of power gyms that have ended updown here. Uh, whether it's because

(02:01:55):
the sun shines, or the taxesare good or whatever reason, and your
training year round. I mean that'sjust really the Yeah, that too,
right, I mean, like certainlyrunning outside, as one example, roadwork
is a lot better than running ontreadmill. And yeah, I mean I
think this sun, though, isreally the big draw Off'm being So it's
a simple answer. It's not likeEvans. I don't know if he's even

(02:02:15):
from South Florida, but I knowhe yes, certainly not from South Florida.
Yeah, but I think its eventuallyhe came here because of a head
coach and then settled here. Youknow, I came here because of my
fucking mother, and here we are, you know kids. You also say
that promoters and the people who kindof run things be let's just say,
the don Kings of the world, they kind of come here for tax purposes,

(02:02:39):
and that also is another layer tothe to the mix. Yeah,
yeah, I think it all playsinto it. But I I do think
that for a lot of Brazilians, they crave that humidity. I mean,
I lived in Las Vegas for fouryears, and we have a lot of
fighters who have increasingly landed in Vegasbecause there's a UFCPI there of performance instant

(02:03:00):
that they can maximize and utilize whenthey are in Las Vegas. But I
think a lot of them go outand experience the dry heat. Like I
thought I preferred the dry heat whenI lived in Vegas, and then I
moved to Florida, I realized Ilike the humidity, I believe it or
not. However sweaty and however hotI run as an individual, I like
it down here, and I thinkthat's really what leads the dance, you

(02:03:20):
know. So it's it's that simple. And here I thought like there was
something special about this area that well, you know, American Top Team is
nine miles down the Yeah. Yeah, that has been an evolution, right,
I mean over the last like whatwas the name Pat Curran, Like
he was one of the original dudes. He was from Boca. If I

(02:03:44):
recall Bellefort, I guess he liveshere or yea toward Belfort Brazilian. Yeah,
I mean, so it's just femalechampion lives in Coconut Creek. If
I'm not mask yeah, yeah,No. Now to Andre's point about coming
here for tax purposes, that Iget, but I think a lot of
these guys are kind of up andcoming like they haven't. Like Tyson just
moved to Delray, right, hebought a whatever, he bought a nice

(02:04:08):
house, and I'm sure he's herefor that reason that you had just said,
Andre, you know. Yeah,And a good Tyson story with that
is when he first moved down here, he's in a weed company with Rick
Flair, so that's why he cameto Florida. But he moved. He
rented in Long Lake Estates, whichis right down the street from us,
and Don Kinglin lives in Long LakeEstates. So one day, and I

(02:04:30):
got this from a promoter that comesto the to my work. One day,
he walks over to Don King's house. So they still are a little
salty, and I think Don King'sgrandson answers the door and Tyson basically says,
come man, tell me that Ifucked you and your ass, your
faggot. You can't touch me.You're not man enough. I eat your

(02:04:53):
hands on a lot, you bitchfucked you? You ready readd he go,
I totally went got. I justwanted to let you know, I
just moved in the area, andyou know, I just want to let
don know that I won't be startingany shit. And it was like something
that funny, you know. Andthen like a year later he stops renting
there and now he moves to Delray. But his kid apparently is a big

(02:05:15):
deal, I want to say,in the tennis. So that's, you
know, part of the reason whygoing to that school over in Delray.
So that's pretty cool, man.You want to just John will appreciate this.
Tyson used to live in the Shorestrained when he was training Holyfield when
he was changing. No it wasn'tholy Field, it was the Earbyite match.

(02:05:38):
No, it was it was Sonyninety seven, nineteen ninety seven.
He was training and he lived downhere for three or four months and Annix
Lewis fight maybe possibly it was aroundninety seven. He was training for a
fight. He was here for afew months, living in the shores.
And at the time the Shores werejust built, so you know, we

(02:06:00):
see what it is now, butit was a new it was like probably
the newest community in West Boca.He would come with his entourage like four
or five hummers would go down yourMotto road and he would train off Northwest
Second, which is an East Boca. Yeah, yeah, and everyone and
this is this was I think rightafter high school. Everyone would see those

(02:06:20):
hummers and they would know it wasTyson. It was you know, a
lot of people went to my highschool knew that he had some fun with
some of the locals as well. And goodness, yeah, so all right,
cool stuff for those that aren't familiarwith Boca. I mean, Uncle
June. You gotta know Boca fromUncle June, right, keV, Uncle

(02:06:42):
June, that was Boca wonderful.I don't go down enough. That's not
what I heard. Let's uh,let's talk a little Boston sports, which
I know you can definitely get behind. I take you you're a basketball guy
before anything else. No, Imean, we grew up New England Patriots
season ticket holders when they were thelaughing stock of the NFL. So my

(02:07:03):
grandfather would make us stay for everysnap and listen to the whole post game
and sitting traffic going home from Foxborough. So the Patriots are a big part
of my fabric. You know,my mother was a huge Celtics fan and
grew up going to those games inthe sixties and seventies, and John Halchek
was her favorite athlete of all time, so she actually got you know,

(02:07:26):
she was babysitting Bob Wolf, JohnHalichik's agent's kids, and she brought Hondo
home one night. So the Celticsrun pretty deep. But gosh, man,
right, like Nomar's in my studioover there, it's a Red Sox
town. So I don't even know. I mean, the Bruins are fourth,
but I love them too, Sohow's that? I don't know,
didn't that committed to one sport team, but I guess. I mean,

(02:07:49):
are you so I would turn Areyou a Philadelphia sports fan? Yeah,
I would say so. I wouldsay, if you could have one of
the four or however many teams, not the Philadelphia Union, right, but
you can have one of your teamswin a championship next, which would it
be? And if you're asking methat question right now, it is the
Boston Celtics, to be sure. But so, yeah, I guess the

(02:08:11):
Celtics lead the dance right now.In my mind and my box score reading
and everything else right now, Iwant them to win in the worst way.
But uh, you know, theNFL is king. Okay, is
that more committal? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, you know. Let's do
this. Let's let's mix it upa little bit. You're forty four,
forty five like me. Let megive you six names, and I need

(02:08:31):
you to pick two of them. All right, you're saving two. You
got to kill the other four.Wade Boggs, Ray Bork, Larry Bird,
Tom Brady, Pedro Martinez and JimRice. Oh god, Larry Bird
and Pedro Martinez. Live nice TomBrad. You're killing Tom Brady? Who

(02:08:56):
Yeah, we can't time right,It's like I can't because that you're getting
probably not the truth, right,So quick answer means truthful answer. Yeah.
Fantasy football draft, Fantasy football draft. I'm very quick on the trigger.
All right, let's do one nowfor Boston Movies. And we did
the same thing with as Ready,The Town that Departed, good Will Hunting,

(02:09:20):
Mister River, The Fighter, andGone Baby Gone two. You can
see, Oh, come on man, good Will Hunting and Mystic River.
But I mean that makes me killthe the potted. So let's go good
Will Hunting and the Departed. Thatwas a good choice. That's what that
would be my two. That's whatno chickie, no laundry, dunge yeut,

(02:09:46):
dungue yochor dung season hiking food likea dil could be? Can you
hit the uge? Son? Soyou got to be a di lo,
No ticky, no laundry. Takea little more time. I took a
little more time. But yeah,I mean Pedro Martinez. How could I
eliminate him? Gosh, Oh,Pedro's a goat and Larry, you know,

(02:10:09):
begins and ends every conversation. He'sthe greatest fall time. I'm a
Mets van John. So we gottawe gotta, we gotta taste of Pedro
for one season. I mean Isaid that we got no more in the
studio, but we got Larry. That's yeah, Oh could you not?
It's a painting. The best partof Larry is just that he was a
scrapper. And I think as wewatch back the reels from our phones when

(02:10:33):
we're sitting on the toilet way toolong, the fact that he would scrap
with anybody was just you watched Larrybird highlights while you're taking a ship.
I watch everything while I'm on thetoilet. I can tell you that I'm
in there for a long But youknow, but to watch Larry that way,
Jesus dude, there was just nobodylike him. Best ship talker of
all time? Yes, he wasright, I mean he he really like

(02:10:56):
Kobe and MJ took it personally andread all the papers. Yeah, what
a beast? Would you say theeighty five eighty six Celtics were the best
Celtics of all time? That teamassembled, which was yes, yessh Bird,
yes, Bill Bird inbounds, itcomes to Maxwell, Max puts it

(02:11:22):
on the floor with down a sixBird in the corner, double fake jump
birds, God, let's save thetwo seconds left building better than the starting
five for the Celtics right now, with respect to everybody anointing them, now,
would you say they're better than thesixteen seventeen Golden State Warriors. Yeah,

(02:11:43):
but I'm sure you could find otherNBA teams historically that I wouldn't say
they're better then. But I'm certainlynot gonna put the Warriors ahead of that
Celtics outfit. But you're also talkingabout historically. For me as a sports
fan, the eighty five eighty sixBoston Celtics were probably what set me on

(02:12:03):
a trend to work as a sportsbroadcaster. Right, that was really the
first time. Yeah, I meanI think the Celtics won the title in
eighty four, but I was fiveor six, right, I mean,
this was the first championship that Ireally remember. I remember my dad waking
me up to watch the ball gothrough Bill Butner's legs at ninety eighty six,
and then I went back to bed. That was fun. I've never

(02:12:24):
heard my dad scream like that. And he grew up in Seaford, New
York, a Mets fan, butnot really a sports fan. But it
just goes to show you, right, he had gone to school in Boston,
and you know, you sort ofjust get emotional about wanting the red
sash to breakthrough. I've never hearda man scream like that. He woke
me up and watched the ball gothrough Bill Butlers. You mentioned the Mets,

(02:12:46):
Kevin's balls just tingled. But togo back to go back to the
basketball what you were talking about referencing, Listen, it was much more physical
back then. You also didn't havethree point you know, roundabout all day
long they were they were in thepaint drivers. So it was a very
very very difficult and a physical teamand they would comprised of many different sizes

(02:13:07):
and you know, way different. They they just knew how to move the
ball. They were a special team. Man. There are also only a
few guys, I think, andmaybe it's more than this, a few
dozen, I guess. But interms of working on skill building and in
MMA, we talked about like thewrestling maintenance. Right, you can be
a great amateur wrestler, but thewrestling maintenance, how much time it takes

(02:13:31):
to maintain those skills. And LarryBird and Kobe Bryant would just work on
all those shots. You know.I got to meet Kobe before he passed,
thank god, and one of myall time favorites. And he deflected
when I try to make the conversationabout him, But I said, you're
the greatest shot maker in NBA history. You know, even Jordan wasn't necessarily
getting picked up at half court theway they were picking up Kobe Bryant.

(02:13:52):
But the ability to make every shoton the floor and want to make every
shot on the floor, and youfast forward towards today's athlete. Jalen Brown
is the highest paid player in theNBA or second highest paid player in the
NBA. Right Boston Celtic and hehe can dribble the basketball during the regular
season, but in the playoffs, when everybody tightens up, he can't dribble
the basketball. Everybody takes it away. So this pass off season, like,

(02:14:15):
is he working on his handle?Did a lot of charitable stuff?
Obviously he was omni president Boston, right, But is he right? Wait?
Right? I mean, but ishe working the way the way Kobe
would have worked on his handle?I would suggest to you none of them
do. Kobe had the best workethic on the planet. So was there
a time in your life where dBrown and Reebok pumps meant more to you

(02:14:39):
than Keith Murray's the most beautifulest thingin this world? Round there? What
are you doing here in New York? President on my new dunck, my
new shoes, Reebock emy zone,Reebuck army zone. Yeah, very lightweight,
which is key for this? Jam? Oh yeah? Which jam the
king colon Jam great question. Imean, I'm classically trained at ESPN.

(02:15:07):
They don't like yes or no question. That was maybe the greatest answer no
question of all time. Yes,D Brown absolutely, and I lived in
Wellesley, Massachusetts for a time, and that's where he was living and I
saw him in traffic and I ownthose and yeah, man, I was
obsessed with d Brown for a goodchunk of time. John, you mentioned
your time at ESPN aside from yourdirect you know, co broadcaster that you

(02:15:35):
would work with on a day today basis. Who are a couple of
your favorite people at ESPN that everybodywould know? And why? So?
I mean, do you guys youknow Chris Carter? I should be in
the Hall of Fame. Course Iserved barbecue. I served barbecue to Chris
Carter. He used to go toLucille's Barbecue. I used to live in

(02:15:56):
Boca. I don't know if you'vebeen to Lucile's or not, John,
but it's great. Yeah. Sothat's where I worked when I was in
college. And Carter used to comein quite often and sit at the table,
first table in the left, bigfamily style circle table and good dude,
good dude, how much for olderribs? Two fifty? Let me

(02:16:18):
get one? Yeah. So Iwould sit in a closet every Sunday and
tape NFL recaps with him, andsometimes he was in a better mood about
doing them, I guess than others. But I'll just never forget. You
know. I used to close someof these things with the tagline don't text
and drive. I believed in thecause. And one time he sort of
called me out on it, andhe's like, you know, do you

(02:16:39):
never text and drive? You know, we're like doing these things live essentially,
and I was like, yeah,man, you know, I can't
really come on camera. He's like, because if you're doing it, you
know. And I think about itall the time ever since. But yeah,
man, like just being around anathlete like that, with just huge
hands, such a presence when hewould walk into the newsroom, like,
even at that stage of my career, I remember being a little bit intimidated

(02:17:03):
by him. And then I woulddo the four o'clock games with Eric Allen,
who was another great cornerback shorter thanme. So then EA comes down
with the widest smile, right, green eyed bandit. Yeah, right,
the least intimidating guy in the room. So that was fun for me to
sort of get a brush with someNFL players. But it was a long
time ago. I spent a lotof time at ESPN Radio. Never really

(02:17:24):
wanted to do TV. It's justkind of happened that way. But you
know, I do miss being ableto talk about the NFL on a regular
basis. Do you ever run intoChris here? No, he's down here
though, right, yeah, helives as well. Small world. Keith
Byers used to live here, right. I used to deliver barbecue's girlfriend named

(02:17:48):
my name is and I'm the best. All the DJs want to field my
brust. All the heat players fromback when you know that are all upper
management. Now they're all in publicsout west. Your boy Randy mossl up
here for quite some time. CalYeah, a lot of a lot of
people tax purposes, right right,Yeah, let's go back to Boston.

(02:18:11):
Let me ask you this, becauseobviously none of us are from Boston.
You are, so tell me isMike's pastries overrated? So I don't like
to denigrate any establishment. There arejust a lot of good places down there,
So if convenient, I wouldn't likewait to go wait in line at

(02:18:33):
Mike's right, And I don't evenhave the name of the other place on
the tip of my tongue. Butin my time traveling the world over the
last twelve to thirteen years with theUFC and domestically traveling a lot as well,
Boston is elite when it comes tofood, and so is New York.
My goodness, I was just inNew York City, right, You
don't last if your food is notelite. My daughters were just like blown

(02:18:54):
the fuck away in New York City. They're eating pizza. They're like,
what you know, stop was acheese? No, motherfucker man, extra
cheesus two dollars two? You canforget that. Sh So yeah, the
North End, excuse me, theNorth End of Boston's is great. Mike's

(02:19:15):
Pastries is worth it, right,But I think it's more nostalgic for some
people and more touristy for some peoplethan it is better than the place across
the street. Do you see thatthumbs up? By the way that?
What can you see it? Where'sthat coming from? It? There is
a ghost in the machine. Wegot some you got some secret service.

(02:19:37):
So if you're only on the audioside and you're hearing this, every time
I'm moving and my thumb is goingup, we're seeing some emoji like thumb
pop up on the screen. Iwas told it was happening on stream yard.
We're taping this on Google, soI don't know why that is.
Happening. I am on a newercomputer in this little studio, so maybe

(02:19:58):
that is something. But I needto adjust the settings because it's pretty off
putting, raife of hand. Itlooks like you yeah, just uh now
you're throwing up gang signs. I'mnever going to be invited, never gonna
be a let me you were inNew York. So would you go Little
Italy or the North End? Gunto heead ha ha. Be smart with

(02:20:22):
this choice. The North End,thank you, because Lily, no one
goes to. Let's be honest,Well there you go. Yeah, no,
the North End every day it's it'sevolved, but the North End still
Fenway Park greaty stadium of all time. No, I mean the greatest field,
greatest landscaper, greatest maintenance, greatestplace to play. Hopefully show hey

(02:20:46):
Otani leans into that. But stadiumin totality is a totally different thing.
Right. They just did a vote, I don't know if it was NBA
players on the best NBA Arenas, and TD Garden was voted number one.
Now it may not have all thebells and whistles of these new arenas,
but that is the jungle. Itis so loud. The fan base is

(02:21:07):
tremendous. They show up for theWashington Wizards like I can see as a
Boston sports fan, how TD Gardenis voted the number one arena in the
NBA. Fenway Park's landscaping is fantastic, and I hope Shoheyo Tonic leans into
that. But stadium, Oh,it's got a lot of a lot of
shortcomings. So what's the deal withshowhy Do you get any like inside,

(02:21:30):
you know, talk or hear peoplewhispering like where's this guy? Like is
there a shot he comes out eastor is he more or less dead set
on staying out west? So wetalked about the sun, the yellow orb
in the sky earlier in this interview, and it seems like that could factor
in. Yeah, I mean,I I would have a hard time.
So he's going to do Yeah?Yeah, No, I mean I think

(02:21:54):
certainly the proximity of Los Angeles toJapan is undeniable, and I just think
putting up with Boston cold and Bostontraffic, it seems like he's a well
thought individual and I just think thosetwo variables, I'm sure he's conditioned to
traffic living in Japan, but dealingwith the Boston winters in the Boston traffic.
I'm just not sure that he hasan appetite for that. But maybe

(02:22:15):
he's not going to be there inthe winter, but you guys know it's
like in February or Fort Myers.I don't know. I just it would
make sense the Red Sox, shortof the way they've handled the last half
decade, would make a lot moresense if if he was the piece that
we've been when waiting for so Idon't know, though. My best guess,
you know, informed speculation is theLA Dodgers. Dodgers, Yeah,

(02:22:39):
I assume, saying in La bringingup Fenway? Do you you get a
Fenway? Frank, Yes, Ido, And I've learned in my old
age you really shouldn't get anything onit. M hm. Really, I
mean I could. I could geteverything on it and be fine. I'm
just saying try it sometimes pretty youknow, plain out the sec command in

(02:23:01):
seven years where we brought up hotdogs, Kevin keV. I don't like,
let's let's get to know John realquick in a quick game this or
that. Ready, you gotta giveme one gun to head as always,
just so people can't kind of getup, you know what. I like

(02:23:22):
to say gun to head. Right, So I used to say gun to
head and people didn't like that anymore. Right, So I would say,
like to say the dogs life thisor that to save your dog's life,
you know. Then they then it'ssort of like you're inferring there's a gun
to the dogs. This is ahip hop show. We're gonna say gun.
Yeah, there you go. AndI don't aspire to the NFL,

(02:23:43):
so I'm gonna do well. Ido an m M A show. You
think gun tohead would be okay?As you were nas are Z nas low
end theory or midnight for you shouldallow for one pass in this game,
but midnight for good answer? Yeah. The Bo Jackson nineteen ninety score card

(02:24:09):
for the Michael Jordan nineteen ninety oneupper deck baseball card BOJAS and for those
that don't know, it's the iconicblack and white Bo Jackson where he has
his shoulder pads on with the bat. So I'm out a third card to
that. Or the nineteen ninety twoSkybox d Brown Rookie was that where he's

(02:24:31):
imitating the dunk. I don't recall. I just remember the Skybox having the
gold bordered card. Yeah, allright, bringing it back to him,
Bob ghost Face Killer or Jadakis ghostFace Killer, KRS one or rock Him,
Rock Him. That's a tough one. That's tough. Seven L and

(02:24:56):
Esoteric or the Lost Boys. Sodo the Lost Boys man like? I
mean, I'm going seven L andEsoteric, but the Lost Boys, bro
I listened to a ton in myleftile. Esoteric did too, So John,
if you listen to the part one. There's a reason why I brought

(02:25:16):
it up because he wasn't the biggestLost Boys fan, so it was like
a running joke all interview with Esoteric, So I just brought it up.
Now, God, listeners are gonnalaugh. So you stay loyal to your
Boston roots. You picked seven LEsoteric, give me, give me like
John's Mount rushmore of rappers like whoare your go to that whether you're you

(02:25:41):
run a hell of a lot.I see you run more than fucking Forrest
Gump? So what are you listeningto when you're running? So it is
evolved, it really has right.I'll give you an example today. I
think one song that came up ValentinaChefchenko, one of our champions from kyrgis

(02:26:01):
stand like her walkout song and instrumentalthat would get me going, right,
So, but yes, for themost part, it is hip hop uh
and reggae and anything that I thinkwill get me going. But to name
four artists is what you're asking meright now? I mean, have we
talked about nine today? Have wetalked about can want ability? I mean,
have we talked about cannabis's ability ona microphone? Right? This is

(02:26:24):
this is really difficult, right, there's no pre screening ladies and gentlemen.
Well, Keith Murray gets a slot, certainly waiting on. Keith Murray gets
a slot. You know Frederickstar doesnot get a slot. Nor this sticky
thing is right if Frederick Star didget a ceramic bust, right, So
shouldn't we get some consideration? KeithMurray, Redman, Tupac shakur h.

(02:26:50):
I mean you know, I justuh, I mean yeah, look,
way, don't you just throw EricSermon up there and get the whole fucking
death squad? Right? I meanmaybe when I come back on, I'll
give you guys my fourth but Ineed time for my John Quick curveball.

(02:27:11):
How long did it take for youto realize how Spain was not from Boston.
Just now, I'm just learning. No, But I asked that question
because a lot of evil thought theywere from Boston. You know, Irish
were in the Bird Jersey when theycame out, you would think, well,
guys are like from the Southeast project. No they're from La Yeah,

(02:27:33):
yeah, no, yeah no notnot not learning that tonight, but yeah,
I'm sure there was a time whereI believed that to get trip,
you know, I was I wasreading there's like this new in connection,
which I didn't know. I'm sureit's talked about you Dana and Rogan.
Now Joe's from Jersey, but Ibelieve he started really his stand up shtick

(02:27:56):
in Boston. He went to collegethere and gains from like connetic and you're
from Boston. Is that how youguys like have such good synergy together because
you have that commonality your New Englandroute. I think there's a Northeast commonality.
But Dana and I are much moreBoston sports fans than Joe is right,

(02:28:16):
So there's connective tissue for me andDana with that, to be sure.
But yeah, every time and we'rein Newark, New Jersey, I'm
talking to Joe Rogan about being bornthere, you know. But no,
I mean, Joe's formative years werein Massachusetts, but I just think it
was maybe different. You know,Dana white ovisposed to spend a lot of
time in the city, spent alot of time in Maine, is just

(02:28:37):
a man who was totally embedded acrossNew England. So yeah, I mean,
I don't think it hurts. Danawasn't the impetus for me getting hired.
I think I had a bigger fanin Lorenzo for Tita, who was
the owner at the time. Butit certainly doesn't hurt my cause that you
know, I'm wearing Boston sports stuffevery now and again. But like I

(02:28:58):
can't connect with Joe. I mean, you know, when I talked to
Joe about like his emotions selling outthe TV garden in like five minutes,
right. Can you imagine even akid who didn't grow up a Celtics and
Bruins fan, when he did ashow a TV garden in Boston, this
thing sells out in five minutes. You imagine what it's like for a kid

(02:29:18):
who goes to Newton South High Schoolto to to sell out the garden in
five minutes. You know, Sono, it's crazy. It's crazy.
Well, look, I thank youfor stopping my I know you're very busy,
and we uh, we definitely appreciatethis. And I know our listeners
are gonna walk away with something newthat they learned it. You're a huge
elol Scratch hit. You love itvery much? Yeah that Yeah, Keith

(02:29:41):
Murray, ilol Scratch can have thefourth slot. And uh, you know,
I'm glad we didn't talk about mewearing big maroon Jenco jeans and making
my mother drive all over you know, the bad parts of Framingham, Massachusetts
to try to dress like I was, you know, a budding wrapper.
Yeah. I gonna ask you, like when you'd go to the like the

(02:30:01):
Natick mall, Like what would youwear? Were you wearing like uh like
carl KINAI when you wanted to bea rapper this rapper stage in your life
or your free styling car you Yeah, maroon. I mean I'm you and
I both wear maroon hats, soI'm still wearing fucking maroon, but no
maroon Jenco jeans way too big,Charlotte Hornet's probably starter jacket and I would

(02:30:22):
like my wrap my head in abandana and I would dick my headbald every
four days. Although that's true, who I am? I still you know,
I still bick my ey have afull head of hair. I still
bick it, you know, Istill big it every few days. So
that's why I am. Did youever wear a concert T shirt? To
school? No? What is that? What are you insinuating? And I'm

(02:30:43):
just saying, like, well, was there ever like a hip hop show
and you were like so proud tolike wear the T shirt the next day?
I mean if there was a runDMC show or a Beastie Boys show,
believe me, like half the schoolwas wearing it the next day.
Yeah. No, I mean Iwas trying to look like Fred road Star
at school. You know, you'rereally into the Federal Star. Now Federal
Star, wasn't he acting? Thatwas an actor? Was like an actor?

(02:31:09):
Yeah No, I wasn't. No, I wasn't like into him after
he was. I was just intohim as the rapper, you know,
because Sticky Fingers seemed to be thefront man and get all the credit.
Here's fredrow Star, you know, bicking his head every four days like me
or me like him. And Ithink that's it right there. You just
you just you know that was partof it. Yeah, what's your favorite

(02:31:31):
song off that back to fuck upalbum, the Black Vagina find Is.
That's amazing, that's amazing. That'sone of the ones I on cue that
was like fucking names. I actuallyI actually named my fantasy football team one
year at the Black Vagina Finders thatwas. That was a funny ass fucking

(02:31:56):
cut that album. I gotta gowith them. That album again, probably
been in like twenty years, butthrow you done. Shyskills Man. Shot
Skills was a mean producer, sodid a lot of the cuts on that
album. Well, John, yousaid it all. Thank you again for
stopping. Thank you guys, No, I appreciate your Well we'll do it

(02:32:16):
again, maybe face to face oneof these days when I want to give
a shout out to the person behindJohn throwing up all those reaction emojis all
interview. Appreciate the fireworks and thumbsups and all the other Why don't you
drop your email They'll they'll get intoyour system too. I'm going to be
