(00:01):
All right, ladies and gentlemen,we have a special guest. We have
my man John Anick from the UFC. He is like Da Vinscoli of the
USC, and a lot of youguys know who he is. But what
I want you to know on thisepisode is to treat because he's a Bostonian,
a real Bostonian, and he's ahip hop hit. So I thought
who better to have on this Bostontribute to my man John? Welcome John,

(00:23):
Thank you brother. And I don'tknow if I'm stepping out of line
here early, but you and Ilive in the same damn neighborhood, so
we have to figure out a way. I have a new studio. I'm
too afraid to use all these buttons. Yeah, we have to figure out
away the next time for you andme to be sitting across from each other
and actually looking at each other. For sure, man, for sure.
I mean I see you all thetime running in the morning. But we

(00:45):
don't have to stopping chat. Oneof these days we'll chop it up and
we'll do a fat for fee.Yes, wouldn't you say? John is
the spliff star of the UFC.He's like the ultimate hype man. On
the mind once upon a time upin Jersey. Yo, I wish Redman
was here, but we're well representedin Newark, New Jersey. Here tonight,

(01:07):
USC two to eighty eight capacity crowdon hand. You know, I'm
repping the Boston Celtics. We hadto go hard on the paint with that
who. We're excited to be herein New Jersey, first time in four
years. We will see you liveon pay per view ten pm. Me
shirt prelims prior let's go. Well, I don't know if I can't.
I mean, I said Vin Scullybecause I mean I'm a baseball guy first
and foremost, and to me likeVince's anonymous with baseball. Uh, hype

(01:32):
man. I don't know. Imean, how would you how would you
classify your Well, let's just sayVin Scully, No matter how long I
do play by play, I willnever be as good as that guy.
And think about just the simplicity ofthat statement. But it's rooted in a
lot of truth. Right, Likethere were guys who maybe were so good

(01:53):
in different parts of sports media thathad me pivot to another area. Right,
Even Colin Cowherd was so good inmy mind as a solo radio act
that I was like, I don'twant to sit there and listen to myself
for three hours. I'd rather listento that guy. If you want to
give me a partner, great, you know. So it's hard for me
to sort of categorize myself. Certainly, I think people who listen to my
podcast, no, I'm a highenergy guy who's a little bit of a

(02:15):
lunatic. So yeah, I meanI think that it comes naturally for me
to hype the UFC and you know, be a promotional guy. However hyperbolic
I can be at times. ButI love the sport and it's an exciting
time obviously to be in mixed martialarts, even though you know, I
grew up in Boston and wanted tobe the voice of the Red Sox.

(02:35):
So here we are. Wow.So you're on your way to the arena.
You're in the car just to teeup the show? Here? What
are you bumping in the car onthe way to the arena. So I'm
usually with a bunch of other peopleand it's people talking and there's nothing going
on, you know. But Iguess now that I think about it,
and coming on your show, itwouldn't be a bad idea. Bruce Buffer

(02:57):
meditates in the now, I can'tget to a meditative state. I don't
know about you guys, but uh, I suppose listening to hip hop or
listening to reggae or even something chillwould be, uh would be something that
might be good for my head's faceas opposed to fucking gossip mongering with the
fellow commentators on the way to thearena. So well, let's let's go

(03:20):
back, because I'm sure a lotof people know you're from Boston, but
I don't know if a lot ofpeople truly know that you're a die hard
hip hop head. And correct meif I'm wrong. But didn't you tell
me, like before all this youwanted to be a rapper, Like it
was like that pop All right,Well, I tried hard to get the
freestyle rap going, you know inuh in cars, Volkswagens and Whalen Massachusetts.

(03:45):
I would say I'm like three forthree hundred lifetime in terms of spitting
one out cleanly, So thank yougot pitvoted in another direction, in terms
of using whatever O rating skills,I have three for three hundred. But
I'll never forget, you know, the times that I was able to execut
one cleanly start to finish. Butyeah, I mean it just came naturally
to me. I always thought Iwas tougher than I was, which I
think aligned with the music I waslistening to. And it's amazing to now

(04:10):
try to play nineties hip hop tomy daughters, and certainly some songs stick
and some don't. But yeah,I mean I listened to it all.
I had friends who were much moreambitious in terms of trying to be rappers,
you know, Richie Marshall and MattHubble now Matt James. You know,
they were really trying to get intoit, and I just remember being
very young, fifteen years old,i want to say, and watching them

(04:33):
at the Strand in Dorchester trying tomake it and the crowds chant and go
white Boy. It was really coolto watch all of that. So,
you know, yeah, I've beeninto it for a long time and definitely
defer to people that were better rappersthan me. What was your first boss
in hip hop? Moment that kindof made you feel like, you know,
I'm a part of this culture.I'm a part of this the state

(04:55):
and what it stands for in theworld of hip hop. Well, it
was that moment at the Strand tobe sure, or it was like,
wow, so this is really apart of the culture. But if I'm
being totally truthful, andre I nevergot embedded the way you know, maybe
I could have and would have likedto have. And part of that's probably
because I didn't live in the city, you know, and I wasn't attending
hip hop shows regularly. You know, that one stands out to me because

(05:15):
they got a crowd that wasn't initiallybehind them on their side. But I
only saw them perform about three times, you know. But Edog when he
did that song about Kenny Florian,we are trying to actively track down that
goddamn track right now. But hedid a track about Kenny Florian in two
thousand and eight or so, andthat sort of was the synergy of connective

(05:38):
tissue I'd probably been looking for mywhole life. Well, if you need
anything from Eto, I am,I could definitely help you out there.
It's his birthday, so shout outto Edog, Happy birthday. So we'll
take us back. You told usthe Strand, what around what time was
this? This is like the latenineties, mid and early nineties early ninety

(05:59):
two, ninety two. Okay I'mold. I mean I'm born nineteen seventy
eight. Well, yeah, youmay be old, but Andre Andre a
fossil. Okay, we are allpumping and what are were forty four forty
five, so I think we're probablyall all in the same age bracket,
exception of Gilligan's Island over there,so ninety two, so ninety two,

(06:23):
ninety two. I'm trying to thinkwhat was popping in ninety two? Well,
you had ed Og, right, that was ninety one Mark, and
Mark was huge, So I meanthat kind of like help Boston in a
way, whether it was something youguys want to own up to take us
back to like John's early childhood withhip hop? What was your first teat
Like what teape made you say?Okay, I love this this music.

(06:45):
So it's hard for me to timelineit and contextualize it, right, and
knowing that I was going to betalking to you boys, I'm sort of
trying to jog my memory and maybesome resin on the brain stem or whatever.
But like I remember listening to ilAl scratch in nineteen ninety four,
d So did you t that up? Jay No, So, John,

(07:06):
I'm sorry to cut. Just soyou know il Al is one of my
guilty pleasures, and talk about ilAl scratch on the show like every episode
I've loaned the show. I willhere toofore but for full the sport.
Before you do your gigs, youcan listen to the show. Yeah,

(07:27):
so proceed. But ILK, Iknew I like you man, Yeah,
I mean Onyx was a big influence. Like I remember being in ceramics class
in high school and I made abust of Fredro Starr's face, right,
I mean that's obsession, right, and I thought it was the coolest thing.
Kept it with me forever, youknow. Thankfully, No, I
didn't get him to sign it,but you know, Onyx, Redman,

(07:48):
Tupac for sure, easy. KeithMurray was probably my favorite. But you
know these guys you know that Ireference had me listening to, like and
maybe I have the timeline off, like question Marcus Asylum and all this underground
stuff that that you know, neverwould have been on my radar. But
Keith Murray, what's happening? Hehas a verse that's like two minutes that

(08:13):
is just on a different level. And some of these songs obviously are hard
to find. I push them onmy daughters and hopefully eventually my son as
best I can. And you know, it's fun to be in this role
with all of this hip hop now. So when you say Keith Murray,
I immediately assume that you smoked lotsof weed in the nineties because people that
mention Keith Murray usually are big weedheads. Am I Am I wrong? So

(08:37):
if I'm trying to call an NFLfootball game in my life, you know
I probably shouldn't go too deep onthat question. You know, before I
do interviews oftentimes I would say oneout of every three I'll get pre interviewed
and they'll say, hey, isthere anything we can't ask you? And
I always say, absolutely not.You can truly ask me anything. It's
up to me to not perjure myself. But I should probably plead the fifth

(09:00):
there. If I want to callan NFL football game. It's interesting too,
because like, let's say I wantedto do a cannabis strand. How's
this for an answer, right,Let's say I wanted to do my own
cannabis strand. I've been pitched toQuila's before, but maybe a cannabis strand
might be a better fit for me. You know, I'm not necessarily going
to take that bait right now ifI ever want to call an NFL football
game, But maybe we'll put somethinginto the air at some point in time.

(09:22):
You never know. This bag guyblend us pre rolls, he got
a tequila, he got cleats,he got a clothing line. Coming out
much more accepted, I think asfine. I just went to New York
City. It's fucking everywhere, everywhereeverywhere. Now, you know, not
to dB, but isn't it becomingmore accepted within your industry itself? Great

(09:48):
question? So I live in Florida, where you can't gamble, you can't
smoke weed or any of that, right, as you know. I mean,
certainly you can get around it medicinallyand otherwise, you know, But
no, I mean I wouldn't saythat it's accepted in sports broadcasting terms,
you know, I don't mean inbroadcasting, although I like the UFC.

(10:11):
You mean, yeah, yeah,I think you know, in that realm
it's becoming more and more. Yeah, I mean Joe Rogan is my broadcast
partner, right and obviously he's procannabis. You know, I wouldn't say
that Dana White is all about it, right, you know, So sponsorships
are a part of that, youknow, Yeah, I mean it's yeah.
I guess we're just we're definitely notthere yet. No, I don't

(10:33):
think so. So we're not goingto see Troy Aikman lighted up on the
next Monday Night football. No,I mean with all the forward progression that
we are having. And it isinteresting too, because even if you do
like cannabis, when you go toVegas and New York right now, you
can't escape it, whether you likeit or not. So it's wild.
It's the wild West. Are youguys holding them shit? Everything but Cole

(10:56):
Caron and your cock? What? How about a nickel bank? Oh,
fifteen bucks? Little man? Putthat shit in my hand? Nong Nong
Nong. You mentioned Edog? Sowith Edog the first Boston rapper that you
were aware of, yes, okay, yep, and his debut album I

(11:18):
Got to Have It? Was thatthe one the pivotal moment for I guess
you and Boston hip hop. No, I mean, I again, it's
like full veracity here. No,I mean, it wasn't really until my
late twenties early thirties that that stuffsurfaced on my radar, you know.
Okay, so you know, withrespect to that gentleman, and I went

(11:39):
down a rabbit hole today, restassured, and some of the new stuff
is actually very good. And we'reso aligned. I think he and I
are very similar in age. Happybirthday. I think he's fifty three today
if my research is accurate. Butyou know, just in terms of where
the genre is right now relative toyou know, where it was however many

(12:00):
years ago, you know, nowin the the late nineties was a very
pivotal moment for Boston hip hop.It was this underground movement and you had
acts like mister Lyff, Acrobatic, seven elm Esoteric. Were you aware of
this movement at that time in thelate nineties, No, No, I
was out of state. I wasin Gettysburg, Pennsylvania, trying to push

(12:22):
Ilol Scratch on a bunch of youknow people from Aston, PA. Was
was it where my homies are?I'll take you that sold you on illol
Scratch? Oh my gosh, Imean it was just that entire the amount
of times I think if they gosh, if they were tracking, how many
times I'd listened to those songs atthat time. Gosh, I don't even

(12:45):
know, you know, And hey, I mean maybe it helped in terms
of all the writing for television Ihave to do, But my gosh,
you know, yeah, I listenedto that whole whole album so so much,
and Keith Murray so much. Andyou know, I even pulled out
my case logic today and you know, still have some of these for whatever
goddamn reason. You know, it'salways nice when a UFC fighter like walks

(13:09):
out Onyx or Cypress Hill or certainlymob Deep Shook One's part two right,
But it isn't as often as youwould think. And I don't know if
that just classifies me as old ondreck to Piggyback off Jay, who was
the first underground artist of Boston thatkind of raised the eyebrow for you.

(13:30):
Again, I wasn't a big undergroundhip hop fan. I really wasn't,
you know. It wasn't honestly untilMMA Live in two thousand and eight,
when Kenny Florian was aligned with specialteams, you know, so special teams,
and there you go, I know, Slaan and Jayson I think,
okay, Jason from the Creators arethere. I'm sure, you're not the

(13:52):
only one. Let's say you seethat likes hip hop, but are there
other heads quote unquote that you're awareof, no doubt, But I think
that you know, it's mushroomed, and music has mushroomed to such an extent
that I think even the most ardenthip hop heads and maybe you guys aren't
in this group, but have letother things in. And even for me,

(14:13):
right, it's like I have toyou know, clean is obviously something
that I don't like. I cussin front of my children, absolutely liberally,
right, but I can't have themlistening to cusses all day, So
my search oftentimes begins with clean nowadays, you know it, it's always fascinating
to note what someone else listens tobecause it makes you feel like, For

(14:33):
instance, I'll give you a primeexample. Many years ago, maybe four
or five, Joe Rogan had Miniepas On, which is kind of like,
in that world an obscure rapper, right, He's like this underground rapper
from Philly. In our world,he's pretty popular, but for the most
part he's an obscure rapper. Andit was so interesting that here he is

(14:54):
having this dialogue with this guy foryou know, two three hours with a
quote unquote underg rapper who kind offits this mold of what we're talking about
here, with this underground hip hopmovement of the late nineties. My father
used to say, if if someonedoesn't say the word fuck, or if
their name is an initial, don'ttrust them. Yeah, that's a creepy
one. Initials are creepy. Yeah, but you never know. It's like,

(15:18):
it's not a hard fast rule. No, I give everyone the fast
shake, but I'm looking yeah hmm, yeah, So I thought that was
cool. It always triggered me tothink, like, all right, are
there other people yeah who like hiphop like us? I know he goes
older, but is he a hiphop head? And I've heard him talk
about you know, he likes youknow, like gangster rap and and you
know, the typical eighties stuff whichis affected. But that was interesting.

(15:41):
Then he passed because that's yeah.Well, and I'm curious how you guys
feel about Vinnie pass because Kenny Florianagain talking about three time. If you
don't know UFC title challenger, henever won the belt, but three times
he fought for the title. He'smy podcast parder, and he was the
guy when I was like twenty nine, thirty thirty one, I'm almost fifty
now, right, who was talkingto me about all of these artists,

(16:03):
right and putting all of this stuffback on my radar and probably reigniting the
hip hop fan within me, youknow? So yeah, I mean there's
definitely an underbelly of guys. Buteven Kenny Florian right now, fucking renaissance
man. You know, it's likeif you looked at the playlist in his
car right now, you know,is it mcso Terek in his last fucking
twenty plays? I don't think soyou brought up esoteric? Can we talk

(16:25):
about that story you told me aboutthe check? Okay? Yeah, so
you know what, go ahead,it's your story, you tell it.
So Boston Garden Rap, just theinstrumental, absolutely fabulous. So we reached
out to see if we could useit as the theme song for the Anakin
Florian podcast at beginning and end,and the answer was yes, very graciously.

(16:49):
And so we sent a care packageof merchandise I don't even know where
that is. Hopefully we'received. Andthen we sent a check, however small,
and he don't want to catch thecheck, which is uh, you
know, whatever, we'll send anew check. We'll keep sending it.
Maybe he wants a bigger check, you know, but I'm very grateful.
The Boston Garden Rap is the themesong for the Anak and Florian podcast,

(17:11):
and so hopefully all of our listenersare downloading that and running to that and
drinking to that and doing whatever theydo to that, and uh yeah,
I mean I guess it's just doneon me one day that if you don't
ask, you know, this can'thappen. So uh yeah, we're very
thankful for that. And anyone wholistens to our show has to hear that
at the beginning. And then soso so cash a check or you know,

(17:36):
we get the hip hop albums youliked. You talk about Creep with
Me L Scratch, which by theway, was really kind of like an
EP with like five songs name thetheme thing, like every song sounds the
same Treat with Me and Creep withMe and my homies like, but it

(17:56):
was great, and it was agreat. Even if you're large, getting
you down little is brittle. It'snot a real you should be in the
hospital. I mean, I don'tknow, I almost know them more about
like the track numbers than I dothe names just driving around however, stoned
right nine and fucking eleven and youknow, well, look it wasn't as
mystical magical as Keith Murray's album.Okay, so my buddy, actually Matt

(18:23):
James, who I referenced, gotKeith Murray. It's the only time I've
received a cameo. I don't knowif you guys know what that is.
Sure, yeah, but uh yeah, it's the only time I've ever received
a celebrity video from Keith Murray.Murray and that was the only one that
I ever received, and he wishedthe happy Birthday to Matt James instead of

(18:44):
me because he was probably lifted becausehe's Keith Murray exactly. But yeah,
we got that Keith Murray video andthat's in my phone. We'll take it.
Oh, was that recent because KeithMurray's had some episodes in the you
know yeah, I mean yeah, within the last four years for sure.
Okay, so you got you gotthat crazy Keith Murray j Keith j Keith

(19:07):
man Murry. Yeah, that's theKeith Murray. Oh man. Oh hey,
before I forget guys, ilol Scratchdoes have something new and it's fucking
heat. Is it knocked up togetheror is it just Al Scratches it called
He's twenty twenty three. I thinkit's just Al Scratch, Dude. I

(19:30):
loved ilol Scratch so much. Ihad that Nike visor. I wore it
just like them in the video.I was all right, enough of El
Scratch boy. It goes off forever. But it's rare that you find somebody
else who's appreciative of that great albumit was. Hey, listen, guys,
I'm still bugging on the question MarkAsylum drop that was. I haven't

(19:51):
heard that group name in twenty fiveyears. But I'm certainly not sort of
an embedded Boston local scene hip hopguy to any degree, right, And
yeah, I mean, like oftentimesI thought that, like, you know,
maybe one day I have a goalto call an NFL football game,
however dreamy that may be. Butone thing that I think is probably more

(20:14):
realistic, not to denigrate my ownself there, is to release a track,
or at least to have a verseon a track, right, you
know, and you guys should bea part of this, right we call
a fucking one more sleep whatever wecall it, right, But this is
something that that is certainly a box. I think I can check easier within
the next twelve months than calling NFLfootball. Are you aware of matth Kellerman's

(20:37):
video? Yes, he was dope. Yeah good. I was on Public
Access in New York City at thetime and he had a show that was
on after mine, and it washim as a rapper, you know,
and kind of light boxing talk. But it was you know, that was
truly his passion is where he wantedto go with things. Yeah, sorry,

(20:57):
you won't sustain a city's inn.Who I hate? A pym like
a branch to dy in, gotskills, got standing up, got hands
stone like the champ from Panama.Body's dropped for body shots, go vicker
blots, nor me for clocks shot. If you want to see who the
best be, come and test me, to come and test me, to
come and test me. You gotstart them get stock from the bull,

(21:21):
Join in the South book. Myflavors good, My flavor was good,
city city, You nothing but myneighborhood. Yeah well yeah, certainly a
big part of it is my passion. But I definitely don't want to be
the star in any sense right IIdeally I want this track to be something
that I write about, you know, with as many UFC nay athlete names

(21:42):
as humanly possible as I can workin there. Obviously, I'm gonna swear
a bunch and it's gonna be fuckingfantastic. But that's sort of the goal,
is to put a bunch of UFCfighters in there, to put some
some shine on whatever other hip hopartists would be in that track, try
to get it on the UFC's radarand see if we could blow the thing
up. You know, I justsaw one. So we've done several interviews

(22:04):
on Google Meets and John since you'vebeen on. There's been thumbs up,
there's been fireworks, there's been whatthe what the going live? I think
you're going I think you're going live, and you've got some people who are
listening. The fireworks threw me off. I'm not gonna lie. I can't
even I can't even cross my armsand have my thumb be up. Its

(22:25):
fucking thumbs up? What is goingon? It was the same thing with
had the same thing. I thinkKeith Murray's listening to this fucking interview right
now. Take it personal, Podcat, Well, the fuck is Keith in
the cloud. Just go ahead'll beand we will last take it personal Podcat,
I'm trying to turn these reactions off. I'm gonna keep my thumbs down.

(22:48):
You know, we're talking about thesong that you would aspire to do,
the kind of I think that youknow. In addition to the Max
Kellerman one, there was also areally good one from John Cena. That
ship was good. I totally afifteen years ago. I totally. I
can run on the trap of that. All that your tongue and fuss my

(23:14):
tongue now now you can't see me. My time is now. Now,
it's the franchise will shine down down. You can't see me my times for
God or fell off. I'm stillhot, not just shell off. My
money stacked bat. Plus, Ican't turn a swell off. The franchise
through a big fitness of limits isautomatic. I'll win it. So you
hitters who you finished a soldier andI say, undre, you're fighting because

(23:37):
I'm storming on you. Comes likeI'm thundering, like it ain't no where
you're breaking your kid. I'm hardnails. Plus, I keep it on
lock like I'm part of the jailand slaughter and stale competition. I got
the whole black fishing. They getone with my division, but they gone
fishing with no break. Kitchen boy, who waste? I got my soul
straight. I brushed you the mouthlike Cold Gate. I will say Special

(23:59):
Teams did a song I believe calledteen Flory and for the aforementioned Kenny Florian
right, and it was so good. And that's what I wish we could
sort of get to in terms ofsome of the walkout music, and Kenny
never walked out to that. Itmight not have been approved at the time,
but hopefully we can track that downbecause that's sort of what I'm getting
at, right. I mean, they're talking about Kenny's elbows and his fighting

(24:22):
style, and it was it wasmasterfully done. It was I think you're
old enough to have an opinion onthis. What do you think was the
best walkout song? Be it boxingUFC? Gosh, man, were you
old enough to appreciate Tyson walking outto you know, Terra Dome from Public
Enemy or yeah? Probably not?Gosh. I mean, there's so many

(24:45):
different directions to go, you know. It's like I guess I think more
about like so many UFC fighters hittingthe tunnel for me, but it's not
it's not so much associated with withthe song. I mean, yeah,
you know Chuck with Ellen Anderson SilvaDMX, I guess would be the easiest,
but uh yeah, no, there'snothing quite like it. Right,
I thought long and hard about whatI would walk out to. We've settled

(25:07):
on Breaking Neck by Buster Rhymes. But it's a very difficult decision as to
the walkout song. What would youguys walk out to? To me,
it was always Terror Doom. Imean there was nothing like you know,
Chuck d here's a ticket, here'syour ticket, and that was ship.
Yeah. Tyson came out to Tupacthough too, I mean later, yeah,

(25:29):
you had a few. I don'tknow. Mine would be King of
Rock scratch. I honestly, Ithink the meanest rap song of all time
is fucking Shook One's Part two.Man, well it is. I'm gonna

(25:51):
tell you another one. I thinkKing of Rock would be a dope ass
walkout song. Dude, It ShookOnes Part two has been used by a
lot of the champions and high levelUFC fighters. Yeah, it's hard to
go wrong with that, for sure. You mentioned Rashan. I got to
ask you because I don't know thisquestion and it and it blows my mind
the amount of MMA fighters that livein this area. Can you tell me

(26:12):
why it seems to be like ahub for MMA fighting? And when I
say area like South Florida for ourlisteners, this is you know, I'm
Coconut Creek and Yorkfield and Boca. What is it about this area that attracts
all these guys females as well?Where are you from originally? Yeah,
I'm from Philly, So you know, I would almost bounce the question back

(26:36):
at you. I think a lotof the answers would parallel, just in
terms of the weather and the qualityof life and things like that. Certainly,
I can tell you there are alot of Brazilians who come to the
US. They go to California andthen they realize that Florida is more in
line with their homeland and and it'salso closer. Obviously it's a direct flight
from Miami to Rio and South blows. Hey, look at this match?

(27:00):
You think me for it? Youcrazy man? She's a hundred three years
old. Not that one man, that one young man. Yeah, who's
the fucking car? Okay, SoI think a lot of Brazilians end up
down here, and there are justa lot of power gyms that have ended
up down here, whether it's becausethe sun shines or the taxes are good

(27:25):
or whatever reason. And you're trainingyear round. I mean that's just really
the Yeah, that too, right, I mean, like certainly running outside,
as one example, roadwork is alot better than running on the treadmill.
And uh yeah, I mean Ithink this sun, though, is
really the big draw from being Soit's a simple answer. It's not like
Evans. I don't know if he'seven from Sol Florida, but I know
he can. Yes, certainly notfrom South Florida. Yeah, but eventually

(27:48):
he he came here because of ahead coach and uh and then settled here.
You know, I came here becauseof my fucking mother, and here
we are, you know kids. You also say that promoter and the people
who kind of run things be let'sjust say the don Kings of the world,
they kind of come here for taxpurposes, and that also is another
layer to the mix. Yeah, yeah, I think it all plays into

(28:11):
it. But I do think thatfor a lot of Brazilians, they crave
that humidity. I mean, Ilived in Las Vegas for four years,
and we have a lot of fighterswho have increasingly landed in Vegas because there's
a UFCPI there a performance institute thatthey can maximize and utilize when they are
in Las Vegas. But I thinka lot of them go out and experience

(28:33):
the dry heat. Like I thought, I preferred the dry heat when I
lived in Vegas, and then Imoved to Florida. I realized I like
the humidity, I believe it ornot. However sweaty and however hot I
run as an individual, I likeit down here, and I think that's
really what leads the dance, youknow. So it's that simple. And
here I thought like there was somethingspecial about this area that well, you

(28:55):
know, American Top Team is ninemiles down there. Yeah. Yeah,
that has been an evolution, right, I mean over the last like,
uh, what's the name Pat Curran? Like he was one of the original
dudes. He was from Boca.If I recall Belleft, I guess he
lives here or yeah Belfort Brazilian.Yeah, I mean, so it's just

(29:17):
a female champion lives in Coconut Creekif I'm not mistaken. Yeah. No,
Now to Andre's point about coming here, for tax purposes, that I
get, But I think a lotof these guys are kind of up and
coming like they haven't. Like Tysonjust moved to Delray, right, he
bought a whatever, he bought anice house. And I'm sure he's here
for that reason that you had justsaid, Andre, you know. Yeah,

(29:38):
And a good Tyson story with thatis when he first moved down here,
he's in a weed company with RickFlair, so that's why he came
to Florida. But uh, hemoved. He rented in Long Lake Estates,
which is right down the street fromus, and Don Kinglins lives in
Long Lake Estates. So one dayand I got this from promoter that comes

(30:02):
to the to my work. Oneday, he walks over to Don King's
house. So they still are alittle salty, and I think Don King's
grandson answers the door and Tyson basicallysays, come man, time me if
I fucked you in your ass, your faggot, you can't touch me.
You're not mad enough. I eatyour hands on alive. You bitch fucked

(30:22):
you? You ready? Gadd hego? I totally you went. God
dammit. I just want to letyou know. I just moved in the
area, and you know, Ijust want to let Don know that I
won't be starting any shit. Andit was like something that funny, you
know. And then like a yearlater he stops renting there and now he
moves to Delray. But his kidapparently is a big deal, I want

(30:44):
to say, in the tennis. So that's you know, part of the
reason why go into that school overin Delray. So that's pretty cool,
man, You want to just Johnwill appreciate this. Tyson used to live
in the shores trained when he wastraining Holy Field. When he was training,
No, it wasn't holy Field,it was no, it was it

(31:04):
was so ninety ninety seven, nineteenninety seven he was training and he lived
down here for three or four monthsand Annix Lewis fight maybe possibly it was
around ninety seven. He was trainingfor a fight. He was here for
a few months, living in theshores. And at the time, the
shores were just built, so youknow, we see what it is now,

(31:27):
but it was a new it waslike probably the newest community in West
Boca. He would come with hisentourage, like four or five hummers,
would go down Yamato Road and hewould train off Northwest Second, which is
an East Boca. Yeah, yeah, and everyone this was this was I
think right after high school. Everyonewould see those hummers and it would know

(31:48):
it was Tyson. It was.You know a lot of people went to
my high school knew that he hadsome fun with some of the locals as
well. He was goodness. Yeah, so all right, cool stuff.
For those that aren't familiar with Boca. I mean, Uncle June. You
gotta know Boca from Uncle June, right, keV, Uncle June, I
was Boca wonderful. I don't godown enough. That's not what I heard

(32:15):
up. Let's talk a little Bostonsports, which I know you can definitely
get behind. I take you you'rea basketball guy before anything else. No,
I mean, we grew up NewEngland Patriots season ticket holders when they
were the laughing stock of the NFL. So my grandfather would make us stay
for every snap and listen to thewhole post game and sitting traffic going home

(32:37):
from Foxborough. So the Patriots area big part of my fabric. You
know. My mother was a hugeCeltics fan and grew up going to those
games in the sixties and seventies, and John Havlichak was her favorite athlete of
all time, so she actually gotyou know, she was babysitting Bob Wolf,
John Havlichak's agent's kids, and shebrought Hondo home one night. So

(32:59):
the Celtics run pretty deep. Butgosh, man, right, like,
no, Mar's in my studio overthere. It's a Red Sox town.
So I don't even know. Imean, the Bruins are fourth, but
I love them too, So how'sthat? I don't know. It doesn't
that we committed to one sport team, but I guess I mean, are
you so I would turn Are youa Philadelphia sports fan? Yeah, I

(33:20):
would say so. I would say, if you could have one of the
four or however many teams, notthe Philadelphia Union, right, but you
can have one of your teams wina championship next, which would it be?
And if you're asking me that questionright now, it is the Boston
Celtics, to be sure. Butso, yeah, I guess the Celtics
lead the dance right now. Inmy mind and my box score reading and

(33:42):
everything else right now, I wantthem to win in the worst way.
But you know, the NFL isking. Okay? Is that more committal?
Yeah, yeah, yeah, youknow, let's do this. Let's
let's mix it up a little bit. You're forty four, forty five like
me. Let me give you sixnames, and I need you to pick
two of them. All right, you're saving two. You got to kill

(34:04):
the other four. Wade Boggs,Ray Bork, Larry Bird, Tom Brady,
Pedro Martinez and Jim Rice. Ohgod, Larry Bird and Pedro Martinez.
Live nice Tom. You're killing TomBrady? Who? Yeah, we
can't away time, right, It'slike I can't because then you're getting probably

(34:29):
not the truth, right, Soquick answer means truthful answer. Yeah.
Fantasy football draft, Fantasy football draft. I'm very quick on the trigger.
All right, let's do one nowfor Boston movies. And we did the
same thing with Esso Ready, TheTown, The Departed, Goodwill Hunting,
Mister River, The Fighter, andGone Baby Gone two. You can save

(34:53):
oh, come on man, GoodwillHunting and Mystic River. But I mean,
and that makes me kill that apotted So let's go good Little Hunting
and the Departed. That was agood choice. That's what that would be
my two. That's what No ticky, no laundry dunge yoo, dungue,
Yo dungeon, hiking like dil couldbe. Can you hit the un So

(35:20):
you got to be di lo,no ticky, no laundre. Gonna take
a little more time, take alittle more time. But yeah, I
mean Pedro Martinez. How could Ieliminate him? Gosh, Pedro's a goat
and Larry, you know, beginsand ends every conversation. He's the greatest
fall time. I'm a Mets vanJohn. So we gotta, we gotta,

(35:42):
we gotta taste of Pedro for oneseason. I mean, I said
that we got Nomar in the studio, but we got Larry. That's yeah,
could you not? It's a painting. The best part of Larry is
just that he was a scrapper. And I think, as we watch back
the reels from our phone when we'resitting on the toilet way too long,
the fact that he would scrap withanybody was just you watched Larry bird highlights

(36:07):
while you're taking a ship. Iwatch everything while I'm on the toilet.
I can tell you that I'm inthere for a long but you know,
but to watch Larry that way,Jesus, dude, there was just nobody
like him. Best shit talker ofall time. Yes, he was right,
I mean he he really liked Kobeand MJ took it personally and read

(36:29):
all the papers. Yeah, whata beast? Would you say the eighty
five eighty six Celtics were the bestCeltics of all time? That team assembled,
which was yesale Ysh Bird, Yes, Bill Bird inbounds, it comes
to Maxwell, Max puts it onthe floor with down a six, Bird

(36:52):
in the corner, double fake jumpbirds. God, let's hip a two
seconds left? Don'ting better than thestarting five for the Celtics right now?
With respect to everybody anointing them now, would you say they're better than the
sixteen seventeen Golden THEE Warriors. Yeah, but I'm sure you could find other

(37:13):
NBA teams historically that I wouldn't saythey're better then. But I'm certainly not
gonna put the Warriors ahead of thatCeltics outfit. But you're also talking about
historically. For me as a sportsfan, the eighty five eighty six Boston
Celtics were probably what set me ona trend to work as a sports broadcaster,
right, that was really the firsttime. Yeah, I mean I

(37:37):
think the Celtics won the title ineighty four, but I was five or
six, right, I mean, this was the first championship that I really
remember. I remember my dad wakingme up to watch the ball go through
Bill Butner's legs at nineteen to eightysix, and then I went back to
bed. That was fun. I'venever heard my dad scream like that.
And he he grew up in Seaford, New York, a Mets fan,

(37:58):
but not really a sports fan.But it just goes to show you,
right, he had gone to schoolin Boston, and you know, you
sort of just get emotional about wantingthe Red Soze to breakthrough. I've never
heard a man scream like that.He woke me up and watched the ball
go through Bill bubbles. You mentionedthe Mets, Kevin's ball is just tingled.
But to go back to go backto the basketball what you were talking
about and referencing, Listen, itwas much more physical back then. You

(38:22):
also didn't have three point you know, roundabout all day long they were they
were in the paint drivers. Soit was a very very very difficult and
a physical team. And they werecomprised of many different sizes and you know,
way different They just they just knewhow to move the ball. They
were a special team. Man.There are also only a few guys,

(38:44):
I think, and maybe it's morethan this, a few dozen, I
guess. But in terms of workingon skill building and in MMA, we
talked about like the wrestling maintenance,Right, you can be a great amateur
wrestler, but the wrestling maintenance. How much time it takes to maintain those
skills. And Larry Bird and KobeBryant would just work on all those shots.

(39:04):
You know. I got to meetKobe before he passed, thank god,
and one of my all time favorites, and he deflected when I try
to make the conversation about him,But I said, you're the greatest shot
maker in NBA history. You know, even Jordan wasn't necessarily getting picked up
at half court the way they werepicking up Kobe Bryant. But the ability
to make every shot on the floorand want to make every shot on the
floor, and you fast forward towardstoday's athlete. Jalen Brown is the highest

(39:28):
paid player in the NBA or secondhighest paid player in the NBA, right
Boston Celtic, and he can dribblethe basketball during the regular season, but
in the playoffs when everybody tightens up, he can't dribble the basketball everybody takes
away. So this pass offseason, like, is he working on his handle?
Did a lot of charitable stuff?Obviously he was omnipresident Boston, right,
but he way right? I mean, but is he working the way

(39:51):
the way Kobe would have worked onhis handle? I would suggest to you
none of them do. Kobe hadthe best work ethic on the planet.
Was there a time in your lifewhere d Brown and Reebock pumps meant more
to you than Keith Murray's the mostbeautifulest thing in this world? Out Brown?
What are you doing here in NewYork? Question on my new dunk,

(40:13):
my new shoes Reebock emy zone, ree Bock army zones. Yeah,
very light waight? Which is keyfor this? Jam? Oh? Yeah?
Which jam? The king colon jam. Why don't you like great question?
I mean, I'm classically trained atESPN. They don't like yes or

(40:36):
no question? That was maybe thegreatest answer no question of all time?
Yes, D Brown? Absolutely. And I lived in Wellesley, Massachusetts,
uh for a time, and that'swhere he was living. And I saw
him in traffic and I own thoseand yeah, man, I was obsessed
with d Brown for a good chunkof time. John, you mentioned your
time at ESPN Aside from your directyou know co broadcaster that you would work

(41:02):
with on a day to day basis. Who are a couple of your favorite
people at ESPN that everybody would know? And why? So? I mean,
do you guys you know Chris Carter? He should be in the holiday.
Of course. I served barbecue.I served barbecue to Chris Carter.
He used to go to Lucille's Barbecue. I used to live in Boca.

(41:23):
I don't know if you've been toLucille's or not, John, but it's
great barbecue. H So that's whereI worked when I was in college.
And Carter used to come in quiteoften and sit at the table, first
table on the left, big familystyle circle table and good dude, good
dude, how much for ribs? Two fifty? Let me get one?

(41:46):
Yeah. So I would sit ina closet every Sunday and tape NFL recaps
with him, and sometimes he wasin a better mood about doing them,
I guess than others. But I'lljust never forget, you know. I
used to close some of these thingswith a tag don't text and drive.
I believed in the cause, andone time he sort of called me out
on it, and he's like, you know, do you never text and

(42:06):
drive? You know, we're likedoing these things live essentially, And I
was like, yeah, man,you know, I can't really come on
camera. He's like, because ifyou're doing it, you know. And
I think about it all the timeever since. But yeah, man,
like just being around an athlete likethat, with just huge hands, such
a presence when he would walk intothe newsroom, Like, even at that

(42:27):
stage of my career, I rememberbeing a little bit intimidated by him.
And then I would do the fouro'clock games with Eric Allen, who was
another great cornerback. Yeah, shorterthan me. So then EA comes down
with the widest smile, right, green eyed bandit. Yeah, right,
the least intimidating guy in the room. So that was fun for me to
sort of get a brush with someNFL players. But it was a long

(42:49):
time ago. I spent a lotof time at ESPN Radio. Never really
wanted to do TV. It justkind of happened that way. But you
know, I do miss being ableto talk about the NFL and regular basis.
Do you ever run into Chris here? No, he's down here though,
right, yeah, he lives aswell. Small world. Keith Byers
used to live here, right,I used to deliver a barbecue's girlfriend named

(43:13):
Teaches. My name is and I'mthe best. All the DJs want to
fill my brut. All the heatplayers from back when you know that are
all upper management. Now they're allin publics out west. Your boy Randy
Moss left here for quite some time. Yeah, a lot of a lot

(43:34):
of people tax purposes, right right, Yeah, let's uh, let's go
back to Boston. Let me askyou this, because obviously none of us
are from Boston. You are,so, so tell me is Mike's pastries
overrated? So I don't like todenigrate any establishment. There are just a
lot of good places down there,So if convenient, I wouldn't like wait,

(44:00):
go wait in line at Mike's.Right, And I don't even have
the name of the other place onthe tip of my tongue. But in
my time traveling the world over thelast twelve to thirteen years with the UFC
and domestically traveling a lot as well, Boston is elite when it comes to
food. And so is New York. My goodness, I was just in
New York City, right, Youdon't last if your food is not elite.

(44:21):
My daughters were just like blown thefuck away in New York City.
They're eating pizza. They're like, what you know, stop cheese? No,
motherfucker man, extra cheeses? Twodollars, two dollars. Yeahs,
you can forget that shit. Ye. So yeah, the North End,
excuse me, the North End ofBoston's is great. Mike's Pastries is worth

(44:43):
it, right, But I thinkit's more nostalgic for some people and more
touristy for some people than it isbetter than the place across the street.
Do you see that thumbs out bythe way that? What can you see
it? Where's that coming from?Us? In the machine? We got
some you got some secret service. We're with you. So if you're only

(45:05):
on the audio side and you're hearingthis, every time I'm moving and my
thumb is going up, we're seeingsome emoji like thumb pop up on the
screen. I was told it washappening on stream Yard. We're taping this
on Google, so I don't knowwhy that is happening. I am on
a newer computer in this little studio. So maybe that is something. But

(45:27):
I need to adjust the settings becauseit's pretty off putting raise of hand.
It looks like you just yeah, just uh now you're throwing up gang signs.
I'm never going to be invited by, never going to be a let
me you were in New York,So would you go little Italy or the
North End? Got in to head? Ha ha, be smart with this

(45:50):
choice, the North because no onegoes to Let's be honest, Well there
you go. Yeah, No,the North End every day it's it's a
vault. But the North End stillFenway Park, graty stadium of all time.
No, I mean the greatest field, greatest landscaper, greatest maintenance,

(46:10):
greatest place to play. Hopefully showhey Otani leans into that, but stadium
in totality is a totally different thing. Right. They just did a vote,
I don't know if it was NBAplayers on the best NBA Arenas,
and TD Garden was voted number one. Now it may not have all the
bells and whistles of these new arenas, but that is the jungle. It

(46:32):
is so loud. The fan baseis tremendous. They show up for the
Washington Wizards, like I can seeas a Boston sports fan, how TD
Garden is voted the number one arenain the NBA. Fenway Park's landscaping is
fantastic, and I hope show HeyOtani leans into that. But stadium,
Oh, it's got a lot ofa lot of shortcomings. So what's the

(46:53):
deal with showhy Do you get anylike inside, you know, talk or
hear people whispering like where is thisguy? Like is there a shot he
comes out east? Or is hemore or less dead set on staying out
west? So we talked about thesun, the yellow orb in the sky
earlier in this interview, and itseems like that could factor in. Yeah,

(47:13):
I mean I I would have ahard time dog Yeah, yeah,
No, I mean I think certainlythe proximity of Los Angeles to Japan is
undeniable, and I just think puttingup with Boston cold and Boston traffic.
It seems like he's a well thoughtindividual, and I just think those two

(47:34):
variables. I'm sure he's conditioned totraffic living in Japan, but uh,
dealing with the Boston winters in theBoston traffic, I'm just not sure that
he has an appetite for that. But maybe he's not going to be there
in the winter. But you guysknow, it's like in February or Fort
Myers. I don't know. Ijust it would make sense the Red Sox
short of the way they've handled thelast half decade, would make a lot

(47:54):
more sense if if he was thepiece that we've been when waiting for so
I don't know, though. Mybest guess, you know, informed speculation
is the LA Dodgers. Dodgers,Yeah, I see him staying in bringing
up Fenway. Do you you geta Fenway? Frank, Yes, I
do. And I've learned in myold age you really shouldn't get anything on

(48:15):
it. M hmmm, really,I mean I could. I can get
everything on it and be fine.I'm just saying, uh, try it
sometimes pretty uh you know, plainhot dogs command in seven years where we've
brought up hot dogs Kevin V Idon't like nothing. Let's let's get to

(48:38):
know John real quick in a quickgame this or that. Ready, you
gotta give me one gun to headas always, just so people can kind
of you know what, I liketo say gun to head, right,
So I used to say gun tohead and people didn't like that anymore,
right, So I would say, like to save the dog's life, this
or that, to save your dog'slife, you know. Then they then

(49:00):
it's sort of like you're inferring there'sa gun to the dogs. This is
a hip hop show. We're gonnasay gun in the fun. Yeah,
there you go. And I don'taspire to do the NFL, so I'm
gonna do well. I do anMMA show. You think gun ahead would
be okay? As you were Nasor jaz Nas low End theory or Midnight

(49:21):
Malat you should allow for one passin this game, but Midnight Marauters good
answer. Yeah. The bo Jacksonnineteen ninety score card for the Michael Jordan
nineteen ninety one upper deck baseball cardbo Jackson boat and for those that don't

(49:44):
know, it's the iconic black andwhite Bo Jackson where he had his shoulder
pads along with the bat. SoI'm out a third card to that,
or the nineteen ninety two Skybox dBrown Rookie that where he imitating the dunk.
I don't recall. I just rememberthe Skybox having the gold ordered card.

(50:07):
Yeah, all right. Bringing itback to hipbop ghost Face Killer or
Jadakis, ghost Face Killer, kR S one or rock Him Rocking.
That's a tough one. That's tough. Seven L and Esoteric or The Lost
Boys the Lost Boys man, Like, I mean, I'm going seven L

(50:32):
and Esoteric, but the Lost Boys, bro I listened to a ton in
my leftile. It's Esoteric did too. So John, if you listen to
the part one. There's a reasonwhy I brought it up because he wasn't
the biggest Lost Boys fan, soit was like a running joke all interview
with Esoteric, So I just broughtit up. Now, God, listeners

(50:52):
are gonna laugh. So you stayloyal to your Boston roots. You picked
seven L and Ethoteric, Give me, give me like John's Mount rushmore of
rappers like who are your go to? Whether you're you run a hell of
a lot. I see you runmore than fucking Forrest Gump. So what
are you listening to when you're running? So it is evolved, it really

(51:15):
has right. I'll give you anexample today. I think one song that
came up Valentina Chefchenko, one ofour champions from kyrgis Stan, like her
walkout song and instrumental that would getme going, right, so, but
yes, for the most part,it is hip hop and reggae and anything

(51:37):
that I think will get me going. But to name four artists is what
you're asking me right now? Imean, have we talked about nine today?
Have we talked about ability? Imean, have we talked about cannabis's
ability on a microphone? Right? This is this is really difficult, right,
there's no pre screening latest and gentlemen, well, Keith Murray gets a

(51:58):
slot? Certainly wait on that andwaiting on you to say Keith Murray gets
a slot. You know Frederick Stardoes not get a slot. Nor this
sticky thing is right if Frederick Stardid get a ceramic bust, right,
So shouldn't we get some consideration?Keith Murray, Redman, Tupac shakur h.
I mean you know, I justU I mean, yeah, look

(52:22):
good. Why don't you just throwEric's sermon up there and get the whole
depth squad? Right? I mean, I maybe when I come back on,
I'll i'll I'll give you guys myfourth but I need time for my
John quick curveball. How long didit take for you to realize how pain
was not from Boston? Just now, I'm just learning. No, But

(52:49):
I asked that question because a lotof evil thought they were from Boston,
you know, Irish wearing the birdjersey when they came out, you would
think, well, either like fromthe Southeast Project. No, they're from
la Yeah. Yeah, no,yeah, no, not not learning that
tonight. But yeah, I'm surethere was a time where I believed that
to the truth. You know,I was I was reading there's like this

(53:13):
New Inland connection, which I didn'tknow. I'm sure it's talked about you
Dana and Rogan. Now Joe's fromJersey, but I believe he started really
his stand up stick in Boston. He went to college there, and Dana's
from like Connecticut and you're from Boston. Is that how you guys like have
such good synergy together because you havethat commonality your New England route. I

(53:36):
think there's a Northeast commonality. ButDana and I are much more Boston sports
fans than Joe is, right,So there's connective tissue for me and Dana
with that, to be sure. But yeah, every time I new we're
in Newark, New Jersey, I'mtalking to Joe Rogan about being born there,
you know. But no, Imean, Joe's formative years were in
Massachusetts, but I just think itwas it was maybe different. You know,

(54:00):
Dana White obviously spend a lot oftime in the city, spent a
lot of time in Maine. Isjust a man who was totally embedded across
New England. So yeah, Imean, I don't think it hurts.
Dana wasn't the impetus for me gettinghired. I think I had a bigger
fan in Lorenzo for Tita, whowas the owner at the time. But
it certainly doesn't hurt my cause thatyou know, I'm wearing Boston sports stuff

(54:22):
every now and again. But like, I can't connect with Joe. I
mean, you know, when Italked to Joe about like his emotions selling
out the TV garden in like fiveminutes, right. Can you imagine even
a kid who didn't grow up aCeltics and Bruins fan, when he did
a show a TV garden in Boston, the thing sells out in five minutes.

(54:44):
You imagine what it's like for akid who goes to Newton South High
School to to to sell out thegarden in five minutes, you know.
So no, it's crazy, It'scrazy. Well, look, I thank
you for stopping min. I knowyou're very busy, and we definitely appreciate
this, and I know our listenersare gonna walk away with something new that
they learned it. You're a hugel Scratch hit. You love it very

(55:07):
much? Yeah that Yeah, KeithMurray Ill Scratch can have the fourth slot.
And uh, you know, I'mglad we didn't talk about me wearing
big maroon Janco jeans and making mymother drive all over uh you know the
bad parts of Framingham, Massachusetts totry to dress like I was, you
know, a budding wrapper. Yeah. I was gonna ask you, like
when you'd go to the like theNatick mall, Like what would you wear?

(55:30):
Were you wearing like uh like carlKINI when you wanted to be a
rapper this rapper stage in your lifeor your free styling more card you Uh
yeah, Maroon. I mean I'myou and I both wear maroon hats,
so I'm not still wearing fucking maroon, but no Maroon Jenco jeans way too
big, Charlotte Hornet's probably starter jacket. And I would wrap my wrap my

(55:52):
head in a bandana and I woulddick my headbald every four days. Although
that's true, who I am?I still you know, I still bick
my eye of full head of hair. I still bick it, you know,
I still big it every few days. So that's why did you ever
wear a concert T shirt? Toschool? No? What is that?
