Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:22):
Good Morning Football.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Hello, everybody, Welcome to Good Morning Football, presented by the
Former's Dog Live in Los Angeles. I'm Jamie her at all.
This is akbar Baja Biamila, who's like looking for his notes.
We're trying to get the show right through. No notes,
no notes on this show.
Speaker 4 (00:38):
Right Peter Schrager and Kyle Brandt in New York.
Speaker 5 (00:41):
No notes, no notes.
Speaker 1 (00:42):
We always have notes, actually many notes for the post
show call.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Many.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Oh you guys, this is our second hour on NFL Network.
Speaker 2 (00:52):
You changed.
Speaker 4 (00:53):
Why did you do with the throwback or not? Were throwbacks?
Speaker 5 (00:56):
It is a Rogers jes you're better have to answer that.
Speaker 6 (00:58):
I'm gonna I'm gonna dig in here. So this is
actually it's great. Behind the scenes, we pulled back to
Kurt and Kyle was wearing a that's Aaron Rodgers jersey.
We have the head coach of the Buffalo Bills, the
arch rivals coming on.
Speaker 5 (01:09):
Kyle thought it would be less.
Speaker 6 (01:11):
Appropriate to wear a Aaron Rodgers jersey interviewing Sean McDermott,
knowing that there are rivals, so instead he went angry
runs with Christian McCaffrey, which I think is just like
neutral and fine.
Speaker 7 (01:20):
I don't think Sean has any problems with that.
Speaker 5 (01:22):
Now it's distracting.
Speaker 1 (01:23):
It make themes less about the guests and why is
he wearing that jersey and everything, and that's it. So
we just this is we're back like we were back
in our civilian clothes right.
Speaker 5 (01:31):
Now, we're ready to do it.
Speaker 3 (01:34):
Yes, it's a trickle down effect because then Kyle changes
and then Peter's got to change because he doesn't want
to look like he's just the only.
Speaker 4 (01:40):
One in a jersey like at all true.
Speaker 3 (01:42):
The universe has regulated itself. And speaking of that, we
feel like we're back to normal because we're playing Throwdown
Thursday and GMFB I let's go throw Down Thursday the
first of this season. It's cross country. Bigger expectations this season.
We're saying Hall of Fame game, we're seeing Caleb Williams
and c J.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
Staw.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
I'm not seeing them tonight. But let's look at the
season as a whole. Peter, you go first, who has
the bigger expectation this season?
Speaker 6 (02:06):
I think it's like if you were to do a
one to thirty two quarterbacks with the bar being up
here that have to exceed it.
Speaker 7 (02:11):
It might be these two one and two.
Speaker 6 (02:13):
Considering all the hype they're both getting.
Speaker 5 (02:15):
I'm gonna say it's Stroud, though.
Speaker 6 (02:17):
I'm gonna say it's Stroud because of just how fantastic
his rookie year was. He was a runaway offensive Rookie
of the Year. He won a playoff game, beating the
Browns at home, and got to the divisional round as
a rookie, which is unheard of for.
Speaker 7 (02:28):
Most of these quarterbacks.
Speaker 6 (02:29):
And this summer has already been grouped together with the luminaries.
Speaker 7 (02:33):
He's already been put in that top list. Now, what's
a setback look like? I don't want to know.
Speaker 5 (02:38):
I want to see what the move forward looks like.
How much better can he be?
Speaker 7 (02:42):
This is a team that had him throwing to.
Speaker 6 (02:44):
Guys like Tank Dell and other rookies and Nico Collins
and made them stars. Now you add Stefon Diggs. I
think the expectations for CJ. Stroud are like MVP, it's Mahomes,
it's Alan, it's Burrow, it's Lamar, and it's like CJ.
Stroud being talked about in that conversation. Stroud is so young,
it's just his second year in the league. It's really
(03:05):
hard that sophomore season. You're no longer the hunters, you're
the hunt did I'm curious to see, but I actually
believe that he can be that good. An arm from
the gods and he had everything upstairs that they were
hoping for.
Speaker 8 (03:15):
Yeah, Peter, you're absolutely right on all of that. I mean,
because we saw what he put out there and the
expectations are going to be super high.
Speaker 2 (03:22):
So yes, it is for sure. CJ. Stroud.
Speaker 8 (03:25):
You know, when I think about this, the great ones,
they adapt and I am so interested to see how
he adapts in this second year, the adjustments that everyone's
going to make. Just believe this that everyone has put
in the study to figure out what his weakness is.
And this is kind of what I love about football.
It's like it continues to sharpen you, right because the
minute you think you're comfortable this worked for me last year,
(03:47):
that may not be the same thing that works for
you again in the next season, because now all of
a sudden, they're taking away your strength and forcing you
to work on your weakness.
Speaker 6 (03:56):
And CJ.
Speaker 8 (03:57):
Stroud, I believe that he's going to be up for
the challenge. They've supported him with the Joe Mixon, with
the Stefon Diggs, to give him some outlets to be
able to show what he can do. So I love
this idea that he's going to live up to the expectation.
Speaker 2 (04:12):
And he has a high expectation.
Speaker 1 (04:15):
Listen, She's expected to win more games this year than Caleb,
and the Texans are supposed to win more games conventionally,
the expectations are there, But I go with Caleb for
this answer. We already know that CJ can play. He
can play in the NFL, he was very good. We
have not seen a single down from Caleb. We don't
know if he's gonna make the jump. We don't know
if he's gonna show up and fall in his face.
(04:36):
There's a hope, there's an expectation. There's also a fear
with him because of all the unknown. So I think
it's Caleb and the other thing I hate though about
the Caleb talk right now, is we need to temper
our expectations for this young man. Shut up, No, we don't.
He's the number one overall pick. He's in a cheap year.
Right now, you've been paying attention to the league. You
win before the quarterback can cash in. If you can,
(04:57):
this is an important year. We just saw Stroud last
year be amazing his rookie year.
Speaker 5 (05:02):
I don't want to temper anything because he looked like
he wants the temper things gone.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Are the days of you draft Carson Palmer number one
overall and he just sits behind John Kittner for no reason.
Speaker 5 (05:11):
We're not doing that. He's playing immediately.
Speaker 1 (05:14):
He should be good immediately, and if he's not, there's
something wrong with him or the team. The NFL is different.
Now you get in there, you're good immediately or we're.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
Gonna move on.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
So the expectations are massive, and I'm not going to
temper any of them.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
It's him.
Speaker 4 (05:26):
Kyle is there also.
Speaker 3 (05:27):
I always like to rely on Kyle with the Chicago
stuff because he speaks to the people so well and
represents himself. So the Caleb thing is there also a
fear that, like we just have this awful emotional off
the cliff with Justin Fields, Like the fear is that
that is just going to recreate itself, Like if people
are fearful of allowing themselves the excitement of Caleb Williams.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
There is that, and I hate that as well. I
hate that. I am so done comparing Caleb just Field.
Justin Fields is gone. It's over.
Speaker 1 (05:54):
And if you want to pick at the carcass of
what happened there and blame the Bear for what they
didn't do, or what do you do, it doesn't matter.
It is a pathetic, irrelevant conversation. Caleb is significantly more
hyped than Fields, I believe coming out of college. I
think he's a more talented pass than Justin Fields, and
he has this cavalcade of weapons going out here. I
love Darnell Molie. We were trying to convince ourselves for
a while. That Darnold movie was Marvin Harrison for a while.
(06:16):
He's a nice player.
Speaker 5 (06:17):
We wish him luck, but like he ain't what they
got now.
Speaker 1 (06:20):
So when he plays his first game or his first
preseason snap, let's not do the Caleb Fields thing anymore.
Justin Fields is in Pittsburgh. It is a relevant to
the Bears. I stop it.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
It's a new era.
Speaker 1 (06:31):
It's a totally different player in a different set of
different everything.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Next question, let's go, kay, let's go to something that
is relevant. What would you rather watch at an Olympic
Who would you rather watch an Olympic event with?
Speaker 4 (06:43):
You got Bob Costas, Al Michaels.
Speaker 3 (06:45):
And Snoop on one side, or Kelly Clarkson, Peyton Manning
and Mike Tarico. Kyle's already in a mood about this question,
So Peter, you go first.
Speaker 9 (06:53):
Well, I want to set the stage both of these
group these groupings were given photographs yesterday NBC Olympics put
out this picture of Snoop, Costas and Al watching events
and I.
Speaker 6 (07:05):
Think this is a believable shot. You gotta see the visual,
then you gotta put yourself in that conversation.
Speaker 5 (07:12):
And I'm gonna say that because Costas shrinded. Costas looks great, right,
but look at the forums.
Speaker 1 (07:17):
I'm Bob Costas doing great?
Speaker 5 (07:21):
What the hell ripped out of his mind?
Speaker 2 (07:24):
Also Snoop Skinny.
Speaker 6 (07:27):
Maybe do we also have the other one of Kelly,
Peyton and to Rico, because that is that is a
worthy opponent as well. Look at those three there, they
were all hanging together doing the opening ceremonies and they've
been rolling.
Speaker 5 (07:39):
That's Toca was crazy right now. Look at too got
really in a rag.
Speaker 6 (07:52):
So those are there, I'm gonna say my answer.
Speaker 7 (07:55):
I'm sorry, and I love Mike, and I hope he's
watching somehow.
Speaker 5 (07:57):
He is probably watching.
Speaker 6 (07:59):
Is a valued friend of the show, and it's always
a supporter of the program.
Speaker 7 (08:03):
But I'm gonna go with the former. I gotta think
all of.
Speaker 6 (08:06):
The games that Costas and Michael's have been at, but
then all of the concerts and world tours and all
of the amazing nights that Snoop Dogg has had, I
would imagine the conversation would go off the rails pretty
quickly and it would be just listening into amazing stories.
Speaker 7 (08:22):
So I'm going with Snoop Al and Bob. Sorry, Mike, Sorry, Peyton.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
You know what it is.
Speaker 8 (08:29):
To me, it has to be the pairing of and
I love al Michaels. I could see this whole thing
playing out. But to me, I grew up watching Bob Costas,
and Bob Costas with his big words. I could see
him now just using all these big words and snooping like, hey, ge,
I don't even know what you're talking about, man, But
these dudes and they flip it out, they dove in,
(08:49):
and Bob Costa is trying to go deep into the
Soaurus to confuse you know, both Alt Michaels and Snoop
and making it and then I could see Alt Michael's
just commentating the whole thing. I even have a whole
script out here, but we got thirty seconds, so I'm
not even like I really thought it out through. I'm
telling you, Bob Costas would light that place up.
Speaker 2 (09:10):
Do it.
Speaker 8 (09:11):
Script it welcome back to the silating spectacle of healing prowess,
where the gymnast, veritable paragons of physicality, engage in a
symphony of kineticism. This evening we witnessed not only their
near athleticism, but an exhibition of unparalleled dexterity of consummate artistry.
(09:32):
You like him talk will be like, Yo, what Bob,
what you talking about? Donc These athletes straight up lit man,
They flipping, and then the whole thing just goes it
breaks down from there.
Speaker 2 (09:43):
It's good.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
It would be one kind of breakdown, whether it was
the words or the chemicals, whatever's going on there.
Speaker 5 (09:48):
There's a big time party. But here's here's my script.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
It goes like this.
Speaker 1 (09:52):
I grew up in a small town and when the
rain would fall down, I just stare out my window.
Kelly Kelly listen, Tariko, Peyton, wonderful Luminarias.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
I got to meet boll them. I love them. Just Kelly.
I I love Kelly, America's sweetheart.
Speaker 1 (10:06):
Can you imagine the amount of media ass that she
has kicked in the short period of time since she
became a talk show host. That NBC's like, Kelly, You're
the face of the Olympics.
Speaker 5 (10:16):
It's like an eleven time Daytime Emmy winner. Because there's
no one else in the game. I don't care.
Speaker 1 (10:21):
They went to her and they're like, you going to
be a singer. You're that good, that likable, that charismatic.
We're sending you to France to represent this country. That's
the power of Kelly Clarkson. Lover, That's all I need.
I just want to listen to her sing, listen to whatever.
I don't even need anybody else, Just Kelly Clarkson. Hang
with her and my wife Kyle.
Speaker 4 (10:41):
I totally agree with you.
Speaker 3 (10:42):
I was going to pick the three of them in
terms of Trico, Manning and Kelly because anything they touch
in terms of TV turns to gold. Like seriously, they
can do no wrong. And I'm gonna put Peyton and
Trico in on that, so joining us now Cam Woolf
for throw it down Thursday. Cam, we just talked to
Sean McDermott. We know you're at Saint John Fisher College.
We don't want to hear about the bills. We don't
hear about your take on the Olympics. Go get in
on this conversation on Thursday time.
Speaker 10 (11:04):
And you know it's nothing but a G thing I
gotta go with. Anytime there's a Snoop DOGG option, I'm
gonna pick d O double G. I can imagine just
Bob Costas and al Michaels just the vibe that they
would create with Snoop, Like just look at this picture,
like I love Kelly Clarkson. I can imagine what Peyton
(11:26):
Manning and the knowledge is. But with me, when I'm
just interacting, I want to vibe and Snoop.
Speaker 5 (11:32):
He's gonna drop it like it's hot.
Speaker 10 (11:33):
He's gonna have the energy going on, he's gonna have
the chemicals as Kyle mentioned, And just imagine Bob Costas
and al Michael's narrating giving you maybe the translation of
Snoop through it all. So if I'm in the Olympics,
I'm definitely I'm definitely vibing with that trio, and to me,
it's not even close.
Speaker 8 (11:51):
Honestly, you think Bob could translate what Snooper saying anything, man,
I don't think it can.
Speaker 5 (12:03):
His version, his version of translations.
Speaker 4 (12:07):
Cam, thank you, Salary.
Speaker 3 (12:09):
You're gonna you're hired to talk about football during Insight
Training Camp Live on GMFB.
Speaker 4 (12:13):
We want you to talk about Bob Costas.
Speaker 3 (12:15):
You're gonna sit down with key On Pullman later on
ITC Live. Plus Lamar Jackson's gonna stop by the show
for our reporters that are in Baltimore, and the Commander's
new head coach, Tank Quinn's going to be on the show.
Speaker 4 (12:26):
Well, it all.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
Happened at twelve noon Eastern, top of the clock or
the hour whatever, right here on NFL Network.
Speaker 4 (12:31):
Kim Welf, thank you so much.
Speaker 3 (12:33):
Enough about chemicals and translating.
Speaker 4 (12:35):
We're gonna bump out of here.
Speaker 3 (12:37):
Tonight is the debut of the much talked about new
kickoff role. Are you curious about this because we have
an expert calling into the show, an NFL officiating and
rules analyst, Walt Anderson is in and I think we
have the video explanation just to help you out.
Speaker 2 (12:52):
Yeah, Walt's just.
Speaker 1 (12:53):
Gonna break down. Here's how the kickoff is gonna work.
Here's that's not gonna work. And then we got that
guy inimitable Joe Buck who some of us wanted to
watch the Olympics with, some of us didn't. We may
have to let it still it on the list. We're
gonna ask him the same question, who do you want
to watch it with?
Speaker 5 (13:09):
Jeways love it?
Speaker 9 (13:09):
Pick between Costas and Alan gojo.
Speaker 2 (13:12):
Ooh, that's a good one. I love to.
Speaker 6 (13:23):
Good morning.
Speaker 11 (13:25):
Welcome back to Good Morning Football. Sherry Burris here with you.
The NFL is happy to announce we've partnered with EA
Sports and matt In twenty five to create a dynamic
kickoff rule explanation segment in hopes of educating fans this
preseason of the new rule. Here's our friend Charles Davis
breaking it all down.
Speaker 12 (13:44):
The all new dynamic kickoff rule for the upcoming season
will noticeably change one of the most iconic plays in
the game. The dynamic kickoff was created to address the
lowest kickoff return rate in NFL history during the twenty
twenty three season and an unacceptable injury rate on kickoffs
prior to that, from the formation the players take on
the field to the zones of the ball can land in,
and when the players can move. This play will look
(14:06):
completely different from what fans are used to seeing. EA
Sports team with coaches around the league who helped create
the rule.
Speaker 13 (14:12):
If it's in the game, it's in Madden twenty five.
Speaker 12 (14:15):
The dynamic kickoff will keep the excitement of kickoff returns
in the game while returning an injury rate closer to
that of a traditional scrimmage play. The kicking team will
kick off from its own thirty five yard line. Ten
members of the kicking team will line up on the
receiving team's forty yard line. A minimum of nine members
of the receiving team will line up between the thirty
and thirty five yard lines. Up to two returners line
(14:38):
up in the landing zone. The landing zone is between
the receiving teams twenty yard line and goal line. Play
begins when the ball is either caught or hits the
ground in the landing zone or is returned from the
end zone. Any kick that bounces from the landing zone
to the end zone must be returned or down by
the receiving team for a touchback and possession.
Speaker 13 (14:59):
At his twenty yard line.
Speaker 12 (15:00):
If a kick fails to reach the landing zone, the
receiving team takes possess at its forty yard line. If
the ball enters the end zone in the air, the
receiving team can return it or down it for a
touchback and take possession at its thirty yard line. If
the ball goes out of bounds, the receiving team takes possession.
Speaker 13 (15:17):
At its forty yard line.
Speaker 12 (15:18):
Onside kicks are only permitted in the fourth quarter. Set
up in landing zones do not change after penalties or
a safety.
Speaker 13 (15:25):
Only the spot where the ball is kicked changes.
Speaker 12 (15:28):
While there's a huge benefit to player health and safety here,
the hope with this rule change is that it will
ultimately add more returns and in turn, more excitement to
the kickoff.
Speaker 13 (15:37):
Now, let's introduce thea Sports.
Speaker 12 (15:39):
American football production director and Madden's rating adjuster Clint Oldenburg
and how Ea implemented the dynamic kickoff into the game.
Speaker 14 (15:47):
When the NFL first approved the rules, we had already
finished production on Matten twenty five and we were in
the stage of our cycle where we're fixing bugs and
putting polish into the game, not building new features.
Speaker 15 (15:58):
So when we found out about.
Speaker 14 (15:59):
The new rules, we knew that our players would expect
them to be in the game because they value authenticity
and we pride ourselves on being very, very authentic to
the NFL. As we went through that process, we got
to work directly with NFL coaches and NFL officials to
figure out how the rules would be applied and how
we could apply it to our game. We were able to
work directly with Mike Tomlin, the head coach of the
(16:19):
Pittsburgh Steelers. He got ahold of us because he wanted
to see his players, real NFL players on the NFL fielder,
what this would look like so he could figure out
how to teach it properly. But he also was already
thinking about different strategies and things that he was going
to employ. Everybody who's going to play Madden may not
know about these rules and how they work. So we
went to that third level, and we have a landing
(16:40):
zone indicator that shows where the landing zone is, we
have commentary support that's going to explain how some of
this works, and we even have three new kick types,
which we explained the first time you play the game.
It's going to be a learning experience as well as
a strategy. We can't wait for players to get their
hands on these new kickoff rules. On August sixteenth, when
Madden NFL twenty five kicks.
Speaker 16 (17:01):
Off, you know we're going in uncharted territory kickoff concept.
There are actually no real visuals of the concept. My
sons played all the EA Sports games and I got
a lot of respect for the realism of their product.
We reached out to those guys and wanted to just
kind of get a visual maybe of some of the schematics,
(17:24):
how the alignment might affect the timing of blocks and
so forth. That game is more than entertainment from my perspective,
It is a real simulator. It's some new skills being
displayed in a lot of ways, particularly from a kicker's perspective,
having to drop the ball in the landing zone and
so forth. We hope the fans enjoy it. I'm excited
(17:44):
about seeing how to unfolds.
Speaker 17 (17:45):
We wanted to help with the player safety aspect of it.
We felt there was a few too many injuries on
our old kickoff style, so drive you down the injury
rate is a big part of why we did what
we did. The second part is we wanted the return
percentage to go way up. It was too low this
year and it's such a dynamic play in our sport
that we felt it was worth putting in the time
(18:07):
to bring a play back to life for kickers, for returners,
for tacklers, for blockers. And I think you're going to
see a great product, a lot of experimentation and hopefully
some really big plays and works out of the bringing
for you.
Speaker 13 (18:17):
The dynamic kickoff is here, and the game will never
be the same.
Speaker 11 (18:23):
And the dynamic kickoff rule should keep players safer. We'll
also bringing back the excitement to kickoffs and Peter, we
know looking back at history, a good kick return can
really change the game in hopefully we see that again
this season.
Speaker 6 (18:37):
Yeah, and Sherry, I think we all missed the kick return,
which is what is going to be back in the
game with this new dynamic kickoff rule. And with that,
let's bring in Walt Anderson, the longtime NFL Senior Vice
President of Officiating, longtime NFL official, and he's also going
to be an officiating rules analyst on this here network
this season. Walt great to see you, my friend.
Speaker 18 (18:58):
Thank you, Peter. Glad to be here.
Speaker 6 (18:59):
As you just heard Mike Tomlin in that piece about
the Madden Game, sad there aren't a lot of visuals
or ways they can use this thing through seeing it,
so they went to the game to help perform some schematics.
We know this game and this kickoff is going to
be exciting, but can you expand on the aspect of
how you see it actually going down?
Speaker 18 (19:19):
Well, and it was mentioned in your piece.
Speaker 19 (19:22):
Whenever the evolution of this was occurring, there were really
two main goals. Number one, make the kickoff safe, but
number two, make the kickoff exciting.
Speaker 18 (19:31):
And what I know the special teams.
Speaker 19 (19:33):
Coaches worked real hard with a lot of the stakeholders,
is really trying to incentivize returning the ball after it's kicked.
And relative to this safety aspect, whenever you historically take
a look at scrimmage plays, whether they're running or passing plays,
you know the safety graph was much.
Speaker 18 (19:52):
Lower than it was on the kickoff.
Speaker 19 (19:54):
So they really looked at reducing that speed in space concept,
moving the kicking team and receiving team players closer together
similar to what they are on a scrimmage play.
Speaker 18 (20:05):
So really the bottom line.
Speaker 19 (20:07):
Was to try to simulate, to the extent possible more
of a scrimmage type play to incentivize that return and
hopefully reduce the injury rate as well.
Speaker 6 (20:18):
We heard a little bit of this during the off season,
but I just want you to reiterate it. If a
team wanted a non kicker, say Justin Reid or Quincy
Williams and the Jets who have kicking histories to kick kickoffs.
Speaker 18 (20:28):
They're allowed to do that, right, They're allowed to do that. Yes.
Speaker 19 (20:31):
The only thing the kicker, regardless of who that kicker is,
cannot do is he cannot advance beyond the vicinity of
the fifty yard line until the ball actually is either
touched by a player in the landing zone or the
end zone or the ball touches in the landing zone.
Speaker 7 (20:48):
All right, So that's a dynamic kickoff.
Speaker 6 (20:49):
We're going to see it tonight, and I think it's
going to blow a lot of people away saying, wait,
what happened. We'll see the reactions online, I'm sure. But
there's also been some other rule changes, and earlier this week,
Ravens tight end Mark Andrews told our very own Steve
Wish on the NFL Network that he thought banning the
hip drop tackle was great.
Speaker 7 (21:04):
How are officials putting to enforce this rule?
Speaker 19 (21:07):
Yeah, you've got to have a rule in place to
try to get certain actions out of the game. Everybody
was in agreement that that hip drop technique because it's
about twenty times the rate of producing an injury, and
so it was something that.
Speaker 18 (21:22):
They wanted to get out of the game. The rule
was adopted.
Speaker 19 (21:25):
There are several elements that have to occur, and all
of those elements have to occur. You have to have
a wrap, you have to have a swivel, you have
to unweight the body, and you have to land on
either the back of the legs, the ankle, or the foot.
If all of those do not occur, it's not a foul.
Now in real time, Peter, it's going to be it's
going to be difficult for the officials to see this
in real time because the NFL game is so fast
(21:47):
and what we've coached the officials up and we've looked
at thousands of plays in this area and very many
it's not Most plays that might look similar to a
hip drop are actually not because all of those elements
are not there. So the officials have been told if
it's clear and obvious, you've got all of them months,
you can make the call.
Speaker 18 (22:05):
But the reality is.
Speaker 19 (22:07):
From their one angle in real time, it's often going
to be difficult for them to be able to make
the call. But because the rule is in place, their
league can review those plays during the week and other
discipline can be administered if necessary.
Speaker 6 (22:23):
So you might not see as many flags during the game,
but we will be enforcing it at some point and
that will hopefully deter defensive players from doing the hip
drop tackle. All right, we got another thing, instant replay.
We know that's always been evolving. Tell us about the
expansion of replay assists and what we can get used
to for this season.
Speaker 19 (22:40):
Well, really, this is our fourth year in replay assist
and every year we added a couple of objective type items,
things that are very clear and obvious. And this year
the competition Committee spent a lot of time looking at
a lot of different areas. They settled upon three to
recommend to ownership that we expand on the replay assists.
The one area of rough in the passer because most
(23:01):
of rough and the passer calls have a lot of
subjective components, but the one area that is somewhat objective
is if the header neck area is actually touched. And
so if the only thing the official has is a
flag on the ground for forcible contact to the header
neck area, and we've got video evidence that the header
neck area was not touched at all, there was no
contact to the header neck area, we can assist the
(23:24):
official in picking that up. Another objective areas those hits
at the sideline, where you have a hit in the officials,
you know, they air in ruling that the hit was
when the runner was out of bounds, but in fact
he was in bounds when he was hit.
Speaker 18 (23:39):
We can end up happening on that. And then the.
Speaker 19 (23:41):
Third is relative to the position of the quarterback, whether
he's enter out of the pocket or whether he's actually
under duress. If there's a flag on the ground for
intentional grounding as an example, and you have the quarterback,
he wasn't under duress, he's just simply throwing the ball away,
which by rule he's allowed to do, we can assist
the official in picking up that incorrectly thrown flag.
Speaker 7 (24:02):
All right, that's interesting.
Speaker 6 (24:03):
That puts you guys in new York into a different
role and getting a little bit more jurisdiction on the game,
which we appreciate. Lastly, you personally have a different role
this season, and I think we're going to be seeing
a lot more of you on our television screens and
on this here show.
Speaker 7 (24:15):
What do you got going on this season?
Speaker 19 (24:17):
Well, yes, they've moved me into the role of the
NFL's officiating rules analysts. As such, I'll be the primary
spokesman for the league on all officiating related matters. Obviously,
we've got thirty two clubs to service and we have
a lot of communications on the club I'll be the
lead on really working with the clubs during the week
(24:38):
on rules and interpretations, points of emphasis or clarification from
that standpoint, and we also want to make ourselves more
available to not only our network partners, who I'll be
talking with directly their network analysts on game days, but
also relative to the NFL network, just to be able
to provide either some answers, some explanations, some situational awareness
(25:02):
on things we end up talking with the clubs during
the week on various points of clarifications. We want to
make y'all ware of that, so that y'all can end
up informing our bands.
Speaker 6 (25:14):
I'll give you an example. Last year we had the
Dallas Detroit game where of course the player declared as
OTHERWI than the ref didn't see it or didn't get
a clear whatever it was, there was confusion in that situation.
You'll be with us on a Monday morning to explain correct.
Speaker 19 (25:27):
Well, what we're hoping to do is when we have
situations that involved whether it's instant replay or various rules interpretations,
that I can just be available to help explain the rules,
how those are applied and answer those types of questions.
Speaker 6 (25:42):
Yes, I appreciate that we all do, and we look
forward to talking to you throughout this season. You are
a long time star as an official in the NFL
and you've been doing great with the league and we
cannot wait to have you as a TV superstar on
Good Morning Football this season.
Speaker 7 (25:55):
Wal Anderson, we appreciate you so much.
Speaker 3 (25:57):
Thanks Peter, Food for thought the Farmer's dog Okay, we're
not going to bring puppies out onto the set, feed them.
Speaker 4 (26:04):
Farmer's dog food and ask them what they think about football.
Speaker 3 (26:06):
Nay, we have food for thought on some duos from
around the NFL this season, because if you're looking at
the off season and you're seeing new pairs or maybe
a resurgence of some chemistry in terms of teammates, we
want to talk about it food for thought. All right, Bar,
you go first across the league? Where do you go
and food for thought?
Speaker 8 (26:25):
Well, you know, I'm going to go to Baltimore and
I'm going straight to Lamar Jackson and Derrick Henry. I
absolutely love this NFL duel. Now, I know, Kyle, you
were beefing and didn't really think that it was a
Kobe and Shack from the Lakers era. I still think
that this duel looks like that. But I'm going to
give you another one. Think about this food for thought.
(26:46):
How about Lamar Jackson as Rocky Balboa and Derreck Henry
as Apollo Creed.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
Why Apollo Creed? He was at the top.
Speaker 5 (26:55):
At one point.
Speaker 2 (26:56):
He's a little older, but the.
Speaker 8 (26:57):
Young and very nimble Rocky Balboa is lighting it up.
And that's exactly who Lamar jack and is. I love
this combination. I think this combination they are going to
come after, of course, none other than Clubber Maholds.
Speaker 5 (27:14):
I'm man, Peter, get in there.
Speaker 1 (27:16):
We're talking favorite duos in the league, like those Lions
guys Sewell and Hutchinson.
Speaker 5 (27:20):
Do you not I love those Lions guys talking.
Speaker 1 (27:24):
Yeah, you know, the top one hundred came out in
the NFL Top one hundred. Penny Stewell a tackle for
the Lions is twenty two.
Speaker 5 (27:32):
It is great.
Speaker 1 (27:33):
Wow, Hutchinson is in the forties, maybe even a little low.
The best thing I like about these two And normally a.
Speaker 5 (27:38):
Duo is a two wide receivers you run backs.
Speaker 15 (27:40):
I don't care.
Speaker 5 (27:40):
These guys go against each other.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
The practice footage from Lions camp of Sewell b. Hutchinson
one on ones is awesome. It's better than most movies
out there. It's better than most Dreaming Services products. Sewell
Hutchinson right now and then they talk about it afterwards
and they dap each other up and they hug. But
this is a great, great, great tandem. I'm really in
on the lines, especially this duo.
Speaker 5 (28:00):
Who you got Peter a home.
Speaker 6 (28:01):
Probably like, well, what about cuppin na Koua or Debotnayuk.
Speaker 7 (28:05):
How about the most entertaining duo in the league. And
they haven't even taken the field yet. I'm going up
to Buffalo. We spoke to Sean mcgermant.
Speaker 20 (28:13):
Like mccollins, who does not wear shoes, does not use
utensils when he eats, and is an absolute joy to
speak with. And then the rookie Keon Coleman, who I
don't think everyone coming into the draft knew he was
the biggest personality in sports, but the Florida State product
going up and during Buffalo and having all of those.
Speaker 6 (28:30):
Comments about the puffy jacket he bought from Macy's, he
has been an absolute blast and we're gonna be speaking
with him later today.
Speaker 8 (28:36):
Cam Wolf is gonna be talking with him on inside
training camp.
Speaker 7 (28:38):
Keon Coleman and mac Collins, who the biggest.
Speaker 6 (28:40):
Person I was in the league and they're like the
second and third receivers on the bills.
Speaker 4 (28:45):
Peter, I like it.
Speaker 3 (28:46):
I liked that he the eighty nine to ninety nine
deal for Macy's on that on that puffy jacket.
Speaker 4 (28:50):
He's got to get him in all the colors. I
go to tonight.
Speaker 3 (28:54):
I go to topical, I go to Kaylea Williams and
Roman doonsay. I love this from Draft night, Frankly, to
take it all the way back to the combine.
Speaker 4 (29:01):
Peter. Peter and I were in Indianapolis. This was happening.
Rome Madoonday was the last wide.
Speaker 3 (29:06):
Receiver on the field because he wasn't finishing the three
cone drill.
Speaker 4 (29:09):
Up to snuff. Caleb Williams was meeting.
Speaker 3 (29:12):
With teams or the Bears, obviously, but in the headlines
because he.
Speaker 4 (29:15):
Wasn't releasing his medicals.
Speaker 5 (29:16):
Whatever.
Speaker 3 (29:17):
Now they get drafted, they just seem like this.
Speaker 4 (29:20):
Fantastically charming pair.
Speaker 3 (29:22):
That's for all the expectation that's on Chicago, whether or
not you want a Parallela to pass Chicago teams whatever.
I like Kayla Williams, I like Ramdomsay, and I'm really enjoying.
I'm going looking forward to what we're going to see
coming up. Still the Cup that was fooders up, Still
the Cup. We're trying Joe Buck again. Joe Buck is
somewhere in Ohio.
Speaker 5 (29:40):
Joe Buck.
Speaker 3 (29:41):
We want to get you on the show. We need
your thoughts on the Hall of Fame game.
Speaker 5 (29:45):
There he is, joy Fingers.
Speaker 3 (29:47):
I feel like we shouldn't even go to commercial because
if we see him clearly now, that means he's gonna
stay on GMFB.
Speaker 7 (30:10):
There's a football game on tonight.
Speaker 13 (30:11):
Folks.
Speaker 6 (30:12):
It's the Hall of Fame game, and it is on
ESPN and ABC.
Speaker 7 (30:16):
And it kicks off at eight pm.
Speaker 6 (30:17):
And we are so honored on the show right now
to have the man whose voice is going to be
calling it.
Speaker 7 (30:23):
He's one of the best in the business. In fact, yeah,
he's one of our favorites in the world.
Speaker 5 (30:27):
Let's welcome in Joe here on Thursday.
Speaker 21 (30:31):
What's up, Joe, Hey, Hey, this is going to be
like you're interviewing me on the moon. So hold your breath.
Let's hope this work. I don't know if I'm in Canton.
I don't know if I'm in Akron. I don't know
if I'm in Ohio. But I'm somewhere at a Sheridan
and the internet stinks.
Speaker 6 (30:51):
All right, All right now, Joe, you know there's there's
a there's an option you can get the free internet,
or you could pay like two extra.
Speaker 5 (30:58):
Dollars and get the high speed.
Speaker 15 (31:00):
Not doing that.
Speaker 5 (31:01):
Let's start off with you something here. We know you're Ohio.
Speaker 6 (31:05):
We're gonna hear your voice. But you've had a really
busy summer. What was the summer like for Joe Bucken family.
Speaker 21 (31:10):
Well, I have six year old twins, Michelle and I do.
So we have spent the better part of nine hours
a day learning the NFL's new kickoff rules, and we
we're gonna put those into effect tonight. I can't wait
to see how this thing goes tonight. And I know that,
as you said Peter earlier, everybody's gonna be watching, and
(31:34):
that includes special teams, coaches, head coaches, personnel, people around
the NFL trying to figure out how this looks. And
you know, there's nothing really on tape for the exact
rule that the NFL has. But the summer has been great.
Michelle's got a broken ankle. It's been a lot. We're
gonna yeah, we're gonna save the broken ankle story for
(31:57):
my second book or her first book and whatever. We're
just slugging our way through dropping the kids off at
camp and getting four to five hours to ourselves and
then picking him up the camp and waiting for school
to start.
Speaker 5 (32:13):
You go, yeah and listen.
Speaker 1 (32:14):
If anybody watching has any problem with Joe's Internet connection,
remind he gets a free USA Today in his room
every day, free HBO color television.
Speaker 5 (32:24):
So there's a lot of other benefits you might not
necessarily be seen.
Speaker 2 (32:27):
Joe.
Speaker 5 (32:27):
I think you're powering through it.
Speaker 15 (32:29):
That's that's true.
Speaker 13 (32:30):
Bears.
Speaker 21 (32:31):
Now, I was just gonna say, the bed vibrates this
this is awful, this sucks.
Speaker 5 (32:36):
Let's I mean this heart shaped hot tub. I mean,
it's like this is Joe buck.
Speaker 1 (32:47):
Your back's traite to see you too. It's you know,
Kirk hurtsput somewhere in the Four Sins with his dog
and Joe's like, you can't even have an Internet and
the dog has better digs.
Speaker 5 (32:58):
Joe, Tom Bears is exciting, right, it is.
Speaker 15 (33:01):
I mean, and I'm sorry again for the Internet.
Speaker 21 (33:04):
The Bears hoped to be what the Texans were last year,
to win getting the playoffs, have a rookie quarterback dazzle
the league. I think we were there when the Texan
season ended in that game against the Baltimore Ravens. But
everybody was waiting to see, you know, CJ. Stroud come
(33:26):
back to Earth. He just kept getting better and he's
got all the intangibles. He is a phenomenal young man
and he can play, and he's that team is loaded.
And the Bears, I mean, Caleb Williams steps into a
fantastic situation with the amount of skilled players they have,
I think an improving offensive line, a good defense. It's
(33:49):
all set up. We talked to Caleb yesterday. He just
could not be a more mature young man. I think
sky's the limit for this guy. And for the Bears,
this is ground zero. They're going to go They're gonna
go up from here. But it's it's an interesting matchup
and they're going to play. I think we two the
regular season when it counts, so it'll be a good
(34:11):
barometer where these two teams are early in the year.
Speaker 8 (34:14):
Yeah, and Joe, let's let's fast forward to the to
the regular season about three weeks. There's a great matchup
right out.
Speaker 2 (34:19):
Of the gate.
Speaker 8 (34:20):
Week one, you'll be calling Jets at Niners. Do you
think the forty nine ers are still the king of
the NFC?
Speaker 17 (34:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 6 (34:29):
I do.
Speaker 21 (34:30):
I mean I've been picking them the last three or
four years, and they've been, you know, excruciatingly close to
winning the whole thing. As we know, they're they're loaded too,
and they've got the head coach, and they've got all
the skill that you could ever want on a roster.
In twenty twenty four, I think their next biggest rival
to be that team in the NFC is the team
(34:52):
that they beat in the champ game, that team right
there Detroit, And we're actually going to have that game
on Monday Night Football late in the year San Francisco
in Detroit, the rematch of that Champion Pionship game. But
to me, to me, those are the top two teams
in the NFC. But you know, we're all we're all
smart enough to know that you're one injury away, or
(35:13):
you're one player not living up to expectation away from
you know, a team not being what we.
Speaker 15 (35:19):
Thought they would be as we sit here in July
and August.
Speaker 4 (35:24):
Joe, you speak the truth.
Speaker 3 (35:25):
I just want to say, I want you to apologize
for nothing when it comes to your hotel WiFi. Anyone
else with this situation, we would be dumping out of
this segment so fast, but we value what you have
to say, so we will continue to cover you with
as much video as possible because you want to hear
your voice, Opine about this stuff, speaking of injury and
how it can derail a team season. In that game
(35:45):
that you have first Week one is the return of
Aaron Rodgers from his injury.
Speaker 4 (35:50):
What are your thoughts on his age?
Speaker 3 (35:52):
His demeanor in training camp coming back from an injury,
like this, everything you're seeing from Rogers right now, you going, no,
I just told him to apologize for nothing, and now
he didn't.
Speaker 4 (36:04):
Even want to answer it.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
He may be reconnecting right now. I know.
Speaker 3 (36:07):
Oh wow, it's too bad for me, because I was
really curious. I know, we're I was really curious because
the fact that I actually picked that game is my
first week game to watch that Jet's forty nine Ers game.
But the fact that I actually like the fact that
he's paying credence to the NFC because last year we were,
and rightfully so, we're all hyped up about the AFC
(36:28):
and the quarterbacks coming and whatnot. But the fact that
he's looking at the forty nine Ers and the Lions
and he knows, I know, they know their schedule well,
but he knows the fact that later in the season, Peter,
He's going to have Lions Niners and they have that
circle is an awesome telltale sign of not only the
schedule that One Night Football has, but the fact that
the Lions are here to say, yeah.
Speaker 6 (36:47):
The Lions obviously are a premier team and Joe's going
to be calling a bunch of these games. We actually
got him back on here and I wanted to.
Speaker 7 (36:53):
Ask him about a baseball question.
Speaker 2 (36:55):
Course.
Speaker 6 (36:55):
It was one of the coolest moments that we got
this summer, and I know it was very special for
Johan for his partner. You called a Cardinals game a
few nights ago, and it was with Chip carry What
was it like to be back in the baseball both,
especially with those two teams playing and that guy next
to you.
Speaker 15 (37:11):
Yeah, I mean, I love Chip.
Speaker 21 (37:13):
He was unbelievable, very welcoming to me in kind of
this little narcissistic moment for me to call another baseball game.
When I left Fox, I walked away from baseball and
I didn't know I was finished. So I called the
World Series in twenty twenty one, and then all of
a sudden, I'm not doing baseball, not that anybody else
(37:33):
in the world cares, but the Cardinals reached out.
Speaker 15 (37:37):
I said why not? And Chip was awesome. We had
a great time.
Speaker 21 (37:41):
Cardinals lost that night, but it was just good to
be back in a baseball booth and kind of exercising
those muscles again.
Speaker 7 (37:47):
It was awesome seeing it. Kyle. Let's wrap it up
with Joe. It was awesome.
Speaker 1 (37:50):
There's a rule, Joe that we've learned in television that
it's always the guests that you're really excited about where
you have connection issues, maybe a guess that you're not
that excited about, like they're in.
Speaker 5 (38:00):
The next room, crystal clear, brilliant scream.
Speaker 1 (38:04):
But we care about you, Joe, We love You'll be
listening and watching you tonight, and thank you so much
for powering through it.
Speaker 5 (38:10):
We really love you.
Speaker 2 (38:10):
Man.
Speaker 15 (38:11):
Hey, well, thank you. I'm a huge fan of you.
Speaker 2 (38:13):
Guys.
Speaker 21 (38:14):
I'm so glad you're back. Sorry, Jamie, I couldn't hear
your question. I think it was about Aaron Rodgers. I'm
sure he's going to be great. He's forty years old though,
but those guys get by with gile in their minds,
and I think he'll play well. They just have to
keep them up right and the Jets will be a
team that we'll hear a lot from in twenty twenty four.
Speaker 15 (38:32):
But thanks, guys, I appreciate it.
Speaker 5 (38:33):
Thank you ever the possession with you and it's the best.
Speaker 1 (38:37):
The guy uses the word guile, the great word, great word.
Speaker 5 (38:41):
You got gleg all right, see you guys, see La,
let you react to.
Speaker 3 (38:45):
The Hey, we're back on Good Morning Football. I want
to just make sure everyone understands that tomorrow on NFL
Network to wrap up our first week as this new
book gmfb LA situation. Two great guests, rob Ronkowski. That
was that My secret just got revealed before I could
even say it. Rob Ronkowski joined the show Friend of
Peters at Fox Peter hangs with him on Sundays Trigger
and then also Bijon Robinson joining the show tomorrow. We
(39:10):
Love this on Good Morning Football, presented by the Farmer's Dog, Peter.
Do you want to hit on Gronk quarter fact that
Bijeon's coming on tomorrow.
Speaker 5 (39:18):
I'm excited about Vjon Gronk. We're gonna have a blast with.
Speaker 6 (39:21):
But my partner here, Kyle, I think he's even more
excited for Gronk for special reasons.
Speaker 1 (39:26):
You know how, you guys know, you get targeted on
Instagram if you start looking at one thing keeps showing
you all those same things, some same category. I was
watching some Gronk highlights recently on Instagram.
Speaker 5 (39:35):
It's just fun to watch.
Speaker 1 (39:36):
And now the clip that constantly comes up constantly every
time I open the app is Gronk and Steve Harvey
on stage when Steve Harvey was presenting with a lego
trophy and Gronk spiked it and smashed it on live TV,
and Steve Harvey did not think.
Speaker 5 (39:53):
It was funny. It was not amused, was openly mad.
Speaker 2 (39:55):
Lloyd.
Speaker 5 (39:55):
It's really weird but so funny.
Speaker 1 (39:57):
And Gronk is wearing an old like nineteen twenties football
home about the hell. It's the strangest clip ever And
I laugh every time I see it.
Speaker 5 (40:03):
That the commision a break and watch it?
Speaker 2 (40:06):
Can you can you send that to me?
Speaker 8 (40:07):
Kyle, Like, like, you got to send that right now,
send it to me.
Speaker 3 (40:12):
Unbelievabby hates he starts getting fed the grond kylo. Okay,
so that's happening tomorrow on Good Morning Football. But today
the Packers just unveiled new alternate white helmets.
Speaker 4 (40:26):
To be worn week seven.
Speaker 8 (40:28):
Immediately thoughts, that's dope, wow, Like, oh my goodness, I've
never seen anything outside of the yellow helmet.
Speaker 2 (40:36):
I mean, they've had the.
Speaker 8 (40:37):
Gold ones or what they were, the mustard ones, but
this right here is up to dating clean.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
I like it a lot.
Speaker 6 (40:44):
Green Bay is always, you know, pride in itself on
Lambeau being the oldest stadium in the small town field.
Speaker 5 (40:50):
This is very modern. I think this is the new era.
Speaker 1 (40:52):
This is the Jordan Love era of the Green Bay Packers,
and they are young, fun and this uniform matches.
Speaker 5 (40:57):
I'm here for it.
Speaker 1 (40:58):
It's the word you always want to say when you
see the new new You just want to say that
word clean.
Speaker 5 (41:02):
Like they look clean. And I'll tell you what.
Speaker 1 (41:04):
You contrast these to the Packers things where they wear
the ping pong balls with the circles in the middle
of them. And I know those are old school and
they're referential, but I hate those uniforms. I think they
look terrible. This can and contrast to those. This is
a big win and I think it works.
Speaker 2 (41:18):
It feels very organ to me, very very organ.
Speaker 3 (41:25):
Winter warning. You can see it down. It's a week
seven the Packers. That's it is a big time debut.
That slaps right right, shrikes.
Speaker 2 (41:34):
Winter warning. Oh winter is coming. Winter, Yeah, Winter's coming.
I can see them wearing that in all white snow out.
That was it.
Speaker 3 (41:41):
That's Thursday on Good Morning Football presented by The Farmer's Dog.
We'll see you NFL Network and we'll be back tomorrow
with two great guests.
Speaker 2 (41:49):
Where's that Winter's coming?
Speaker 4 (41:50):
What movie Winter is the movie
