Speaker 1 (00:07):
The Season with Peter Scheger is a production of the
NFL in partnership with iHeartRadio. What's Up, everybody, Welcome to
the Season with Peter Schreger. We're off last week, we're

(00:28):
back on this week. We're recording this on a Wednesday
around three o'clock, and the Jets and the Giants just
finished a joint practice that looked like it was electric
and it was a good preview for the Jets Giants
game on Saturday night, which I don't know if I'm
announcing any news here. Andrew Marshand of the New York

(00:48):
Post or the Athletic wherever he's at now has not
reported it. No one's reported it. I will be in
the broadcast booth for Jets Giants pre season. This is
as silly as this might sound to some, This is
a pretty cool ass dream come true for me. I
grew up watching the Jets preseason, the Giants preseason my

(01:08):
entire life. I worked Jets preseason games a couple years back,
didn't do it the last couple of years. Anthony Beck
did the first couple of games. Couldn't do this game.
So late last week I got a call asking if
I'll be in the booth and I'm like as a
play by play guy, as a color guy, as a

(01:30):
sideline reporter, and they were like, no Iron Eagles to
play by play guy, You idiot, You could just come
in and give some color. So I've been studying NonStop Jets, Roster, Giants, roster,
and I will be on the broadcast Saturday night. But
it's been a crazy couple weeks in the NFL, and
I'm here with my great producer, slash co host in

(01:50):
many ways, mister Aaron wan Kaufman and Aaron, I'm gonna
I'm gonna give you my weekend event and then I'm
gonna ask you about what you did over the weekend,
because I feel like both are intertwined in a way
of sports soelebrity and maybe spinning the spinning it forward

(02:12):
a little bit as where this whole confluence of sports
and celebrity and in many ways, I guess culture and
zeitgeist come together. So obviously I've done NFL stuff for years.
I had an opportunity to go to the Masters this
year in August which was a dream come true. I'd

(02:32):
never been to Augusta. It was like bucket list. It
was amazing. And when I was there, there was a
private concert for a musician that I did not know
much about. And this musician's name is jelly Roll. Jelly
Roll performed at this masters party that I was at,
and it was awesome. I was blown away. Fast forward

(02:53):
a couple months later, I'm playing in a golf tournament
and I meet this guy who is an agent and
he represents different country music artists, and he starts talking
about how he works with Zach Bryan and he works
with Kenny Chesney and all these guys, and I'm like,
this is awesome. I go I roll with jelly Roll

(03:14):
and he's like, totally get it. Jelly Roll is awesome.
I know his guys too. All right, great, so I
catch word that's serious, Sirius XM, Sirius La, Howard Stern,
the whole thing, call me daddy, whatever you want to
call it. They're having a concert and the concert is
going to be out on the Eastern Tip, a long Island,

(03:34):
at a place called Stephen Talkhouse. Now Stephen Talkhouse is
a small bar, probably capacity of five hundred people. And
in this small bar, in this small concert venue, jelly
rolls performing. I have to immediately get on my text chain.
I'm asking anybody can I get tickets since I want
to see Jelly Roll. I want to go see jelly Roll.
Sure enough, I get tickets to go see jelly Roll.

(03:56):
I bring my wife, I bring our friends. We have
two friends, the Zips. They're into see live music. We
head out there. There's a tent in the back. We
go to the Jelly Roll concert and is like this
like great anticipation. And as we're walking into Jelly Roll,
Aaron Jimmy Fallon rolls through, Howard Stern, rolls through Bradley Cooper,

(04:20):
rolls through John Hamm, Jason Bateman, Will Arnett, Sean Hayes,
the smartlest guys. They're all with serious now. All of
a sudden, then it's Baba Booie from The Howard Stern Show,
and then it's Rosanna Scatto from local Fox five, and
I'm like, everyone's here to see the jelly Jelly Roll
comes on. I am not exaggerating. I think it's one

(04:44):
of the best concerts I've ever been to. Small value,
small venue, little backyard tent. Action comes out plays I'm
not Okay, one of his favorites. He plays Garth Brooks
Friends in Low Places, plays Lonely Road, which is a
cover of Country Roads by John Denver, but it's his
own spin on it. Plays Nita Fa, which is his

(05:06):
biggest hit, plays That Saved Me. Then he does this
whole section of covers where he's playing Biz Marquis. Then
he goes into Hoodie and the Blowfish Let Her Cry,
which was like unbelievable. I'm trying to think one of
the covers he did because he was like, oh Green Day,
good riddance. Like this guy is so talented. It's an

(05:30):
hour long, maybe maybe ninety minutes long. He doesn't stop
in the middle of it. He's just like, I got
to stop the concert right now. He's like, I am
a white trash kid from Nashville, Tennessee, and I am
performing in New York right now, and I am watching
Howard Stern watch me perform, and this is so surreal.

(05:52):
He's like, I went on Howard Show last year and
it was a bucket list item. So he's like kissing
the ring and paying tribute to the throne, and I'm
like twenty feet away now, twenty feet I'm probably so
Howard's in like VIP area and I've never seen Howard
Stern in person, and like, Howard Stern to me is,
you know, Joe Rogan might be the guy now or

(06:15):
Theo Vaughn might be the guy now, but if you're
talking like interviewer and cultural zeitgeist, and like the guy,
Howard Stern is my hero. Like the way he interviews
people is unlike anyone else, and he can do it
with such an art. Now I'm not as into the
stuff that used to be on you know, a little
bit vulgar and all that like, and i think Howard's

(06:36):
kind of steered away from that as too. And I
love the whack pack and all of that, but it's
from just pure interviewing standpoint. No one better than Howard Stern.
He's about one hundred feet away and I'm with my
wife Erica, and I'm looking at him and like she
knows me. She's like, you're not gonna make I'm like,
hell no, I'm not going like this guy right now,
like just to be in the same pay I'm not

(06:56):
saying a word to him. He was also like in
a VIP area behind a red carpet, like behind a
red velvet rope. So I'm like I'm not messing with it,
but I to see Howard in person was surreal than
to see Howard appreciating Jelly Roll was unbelievable. Now, where's
the football tiant? Because everyone else was at preseason games. Trigger,
what the hell are you doing at a Jelly Roll

(07:16):
concert out in Montalk. Well, here's the tiant. Turns out
Jelly's a huge football fan. Jelly loves ball. That got
back to me. I didn't see Jelly Roll after the concert.
There was an opportunity. I was like, we're getting out
of here, it's a mob scene. We'll leave in whatever.
But I have since had correspondence with some of Jelly
Rolls people, and it turns out he is a huge

(07:39):
fan of ball. Titans obviously there and there grew up,
big football fan, big guy, obviously four hundred pounds whatever,
he is three point fifty. I love the dude. Big
New York Times article on him this weekend also, But
here is my plea Aaron, we've done hip hop, We've
done rock. Who sang at the halftime show this year

(08:01):
in Vegas? Was the Bruno Mars again? Who'd we bring
out this year? I don't know who was usher? Was it?
We've done usher, am I allowed to say this? How
about we bring in some modern country? How about we?
I mean, and look, if you want to bring in
classic country too, and you want to pay respect to
the heroes they always like to bring out, Like all right, well,
if we're gonna do hip hop, we have to also

(08:22):
bring out Doctor Dre and Snoop. If we're gonna do this,
we're gonna bring rock. We gotta bring out this classic
you know, Madonna's gotta gotta come out too. Here's my
here's my pitch to the NFL New Orleans. Okay, short
of bringing out Master p and Harry Connock Junior. I
don't know if we need to have a New Orleans
you know artist, I would say, let's come out there.

(08:44):
We bring out Chaboozi. We open with Shaboozi. Okay, I
love Shaboozi, And I don't know, we're iHeart. We have
the rights, Aaron, we the rights. We can maybe play
a little Shaboozie right now, Like, can I just like
call out kids or do we have to like pay
for that?

Speaker 2 (08:57):
We absolutely do not have right, Like, let me just
put on all these hit songs. You can you can
go onto whatever streaming app you yeah, and find Chaboozy
no spoilers.

Speaker 1 (09:08):
But if you want to stop the podcast right here
and put on Shaboozy bar song, there was a song
of the summer, do that. So I'm gonna go with this.
I'm gonna go. Shaboozie opens it up and we're all like,
oh my god, we're in this frenzy. Morgan Whalen a
post malone show up. We bring them all out. They
could do a couple songs together, Okay. Then from way

(09:28):
back we roll out my guy and Jelly comes in
and he does a three song set. And then if
you want to close it and you want to bring
out Garth Brooks or Brooks and dun or Alan Jackson
or some classic or even you know, help bring out
Dolly part and let her say again she did Thanksgiving
last year. Like cool, if you need to end it
with that classic stuff. But my pitch to the NFL

(09:51):
as an NFL employee, and I know they're getting this
from a thousand different directions. Let's go country this year.
This is coming from a New Yorker, the New Yorker
who respects, you know, the two coasts a whole lot
and I'm not usually this guy. I'm telling you, I
watched this jelly roll captivate a Long Island, New York
crowd filled with celebrities and a hoy poloid whatever we

(10:15):
call it. Like I saw it. I watched in my
own two eyes at Howard Stern is getting into jelly roll.
That means everyone in between can as well. So that
was my weekend. I'm going to talk football in a second,
but Aaron, well, all that was going on my timeline

(10:37):
was being assaulted by content from this thing at the
Javit Center that I'll be honest not a sports collectibles guy.
I've interacted with several athletes. I don't know if I'm
waiting on a line behind one hundred different people dressed
in Aaron Judge jerseys to go catch a sniff of
Mike Diego and Carney Lansford signing autographs. Tell me about

(11:00):
Fanatics Fest and what that was, because I know you
were in attendance.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Yeah, so I was there on Friday. I did not
go for the entire weekend, but I was there Friday.
iHeart was recording, and first of all, like we set
up and I was just in the area where there
were like the NFL had a space, iHeart had a
space and we were just recording and I was like, okay,
this is interesting, it's not that big. And then our

(11:24):
other producer, Jason was like, you have to go past
that other room, go into the other room, and then
you walk into.

Speaker 1 (11:30):
This there's like the VIP DP.

Speaker 2 (11:34):
No, no, no, this isn't VIP. This is like for the
general audience. There's a separate Like I was in the
offshoot room and you go into the main room and
it's like just tables and tables and tables of people
selling sports cards and surprisingly a lot of Pokemon cards.
I guess Pokemon cards are like very tied in with

(11:55):
sports cards in yes, exactly, and so like you would
have here's someone with like I don't know, forty five
boxes of tops ninety two, you know whatever, baseball cards
and then like the nineteen ninety eight edition.

Speaker 1 (12:13):
I've got that. You got that pass pat LISTATUE Rookie,
I've got it.

Speaker 2 (12:17):
And so I mean, as a as a little kid,
I had some baseball cards, and I had some football cards,
and definitely basketball cards. I don't think any of them
wound up anywhere other than like in a fat rubber
band or in a shoe.

Speaker 1 (12:33):
Box, or in my father's generation, they were in the
spokes of your bike in like a wheel.

Speaker 2 (12:37):
Yes, yes, I was shocked at how expensive these all were.
And I I there was also one person selling comic books,
which was like I was like, oh, well you have
like original the original Spider Man issue number one, or
like this is Superman's first appear. They didn't have that one.
But yeah, it was wild.

Speaker 1 (12:57):
The collect it's all like because we used to go.
I mean, I don't know, I used to go to
card shows as a kid. You go to a card
show and there would just be tables after tables, and
it's like here they are in cases. And some of
the guys are professional collectors and some of them are
just like amateurs. Like I used to go to you know,
the Howell flea Market in New Jersey and like every Sunday,

(13:18):
this guy Avery's Comics had all the cards, and like
you would go and you'd buy a starting lineup that
hadn't been opened from a couple of years ago, and like,
look I got the I got the Mark Rippin starting
lineup for thirty dollars, but it was in KB two
years ago at for ten dollars, Like right, right, well,
what are we looking at here? If you're telling me
how expensive these things are? Are these like to the
next level that I wouldn't even imagine.

Speaker 2 (13:40):
So I took some pictures of some of the various cards,
so mostly football cards there are. I did not realize
how expansive this market is. But there are like different
holographic versions of the same Beijon rookie card, or there's
one you know not to be not to poke a
player who's maybe down right now, so like no, there's

(14:01):
there's a Matt Jones one that's like and it says
like bombastic and he's like in the photo, and I
was like, you couldn't have picked like a photo of
him throwing the ball, like give him something. But they
also have a ton of old cards, Like there are
cards that, like you said, your dad probably opened and
had in his bike, except someone else's dad didn't put

(14:21):
it in the bike, and now it's worth four grand
or something. Yeah, So there are a lot of new cards.
There were entire boxes of only Caitlin Clark cards. There
were there.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Were so many women's basketball WNBA cards.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
There are so many basketball cards that just have Wemby
as just like he is the selling.

Speaker 1 (14:44):
Point questions for some question, Yeah, do they still have
Beckett magazine? Does that still exist? Did you see any
Beckett magazines around? That's where we used to have in
every month at Summer Camp. You'd get in the mail
of package and the Beckett magazine would have a little
green arrow up or down based on your card's value,
and they had every card ever made. I don't know
if Beckett still exists.

Speaker 2 (15:04):
Uh, it's supposed it's got websites still. I don't know
if it exists in magazine form. It does actually still
just one dollar an issue. Great, yeah, so it must
still be a thing. But I have to imagine. I
talked to some of the people who ran stores, and
there were people from all over the country, like there
were I talked to one woman who her store was

(15:25):
two stops away in Manhattan, and I talked to some
people who had come from like Georgia, and it was
just like wow, And they said that this market blew
up over COVID for whatever reason, like people were stuck
inside and suddenly it was about buying collectibles and it
was about like opening it on stream and saying I
have this box of flear you know, two twenty one

(15:50):
NBA cards and let's see what rookies I'm going to
open here, and like pulling them each individually. It was
wild and it's not anything that I collect or buy,
So I was just seeing and.

Speaker 1 (16:04):
I knew it was big because I see Aaron raveled,
like started a whole company around it. I see Michael
Rubins involved. Any time he's involved, it feels like it's
glowing up. And obviously fanatics Meiss was a part of that.
That's one part of it. But then there was this
whole other thing where like I'm watching Tom Brady get
interviewed by Steven A.

Speaker 2 (16:20):
Smith.

Speaker 1 (16:21):
Then I'm watching like jay Z showed up with DJ
Collin and I'm like, this is all happening amidst Like, so,
Javit Center is freaking huge. I used to see the
car show there is it were you able to beautiful?

Speaker 2 (16:32):
It was my first time being at Javit Center. It
was beautiful. Yeah, So I was not there was There
were a few moments of Stephen A. Smith being moved
about with huge security teams and you know, fans chasing
him down and trying to get you know, his audisself
say something to him, yeah, selfie with him, But there

(16:54):
were you could also pay, so.

Speaker 1 (16:56):
He paid separately for that to then go. But like,
were you paying to go look at these different collectibles?

Speaker 2 (17:01):
So that's no, no, So I mean we were working there,
but I think everyone paid some feed just to get
in the door one day and then I saw so
many kids, little kids who were having the time of
their life, like parents, parents are there with them.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
From like my kids school, being like will you be
at fanatics fest?

Speaker 2 (17:20):
And I was like, right, carry in like a box
like the kids or whatever.

Speaker 1 (17:24):
Jalen Brunson fan and Jalen Brunson's given autograph, so like
that's an opportunity to get that.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
Grant Williams was there given an interview, and you know
he he supposedly I think he bought a box of
basketball cards for like ten grand or something, opened it
and got a Luca Rookie card that's worth a hundred.

Speaker 1 (17:43):
I mean that's a great story. I mean, I'm always
a little guy. That's good.

Speaker 2 (17:46):
You're happy for him, right, that is that's not an
endorsement saying that everyone should go out and spend ten
grand to buy a box of cards. And expect you're
gonna ten times your money. But still, yeah, no, there
was a lot of you know, athletes there. I didn't see.
I didn't see jay Z. I know Asap Rocky was there.
Like there were musicians there and everything too. But you
could go and get in line and get a photo

(18:08):
with an athlete or get an autograph with them.

Speaker 1 (18:12):
So there was so much this thing. Yeah, if you're
a listener of this podcast and say you live in
the Tri state area, you're in Connecticut, New Jersey, and
they're having it in the spring, let's just say instead
of the summer, because you go there on summer plans,
you'd say, check it out.

Speaker 2 (18:29):
I think, like you said, I didn't grow up going
to card shows, but I would go to the flea
market every other weekend with my mom, and I would
as soon as we got there, like I would the cards,
run to the guy who was selling cards, and I
would go look at the X Men cards and the
basketball cards and magic cards whatever. I just went straight
to the flea market or to the card table. And
if you have a kid who does that, yeah, they

(18:50):
probably would have loved this. Okay that this would have
been amazing. What was what were you.

Speaker 1 (18:54):
Doing for iHeart there, Like, can I find a podcast
of you guys live at is it?

Speaker 3 (18:59):
You?

Speaker 1 (18:59):
And Jason and a coast.

Speaker 2 (19:00):
Who was in No, I mean we were there helping
to record Bobby Bones, who's a iHeart Radio he has
a couple shows. Yeah, and he he actually bought a
box while he was there of cards that he wanted
to open. And I don't actually think he did while
we were there, because then they went into this whole
discussion about supposedly now everyone is using CT scans on

(19:25):
boxes of unopened cards.

Speaker 1 (19:26):
What does it mean?

Speaker 2 (19:28):
So it's like a digital imaging thing you use in
medicine to like look at inside your body. And people
are able to use the box card card there to
see what's in it. So before they open this ten
grand box, there's there's one Lebron Rookie card that's never
been opened and it's probably worth upwards of one hundred grand,
you know, six figures. And so if you throw this

(19:51):
box in the CT scan machine, you can see if
it's in there. If it's in there, you open the
box and then you sell that card, and if it's
not in there, you probably just sell the box to
someone else. At ten grand, and you know, they open
it thinking that the Lebron card might be in there,
so they had a whole discussion about that, and he
ended up not opening the box that he bought because

(20:11):
he was too nervous that it had been scanned at
a ct scam machine. So, yeah, there were a bunch
of recordings, and I Heart had some radio stations that
were there doing stuff as well. But yeah, it was,
it was. It looks like a lot of fun. All
the stuff I saw on socials the next couple of
days too, because I didn't go Saturday or Sunday, I

(20:31):
saw Gronk and Brady were there. Jersey's just walking through
the lot, which was cool.

Speaker 1 (20:39):
They had a good turnout. I mean, you're talking big
stars all over the place, all right, So let's fanatics
fest and we're giving it a if you're into it, though,
if you're not, do I like that? All right? A
couple other topics before I get to my list of

(21:01):
ten breakout players, which I think everyone wants to hear
because you're doing your fantasy draft and all this thing.
The Chiefs. The Chiefs on Saturday played all of their starters.
They played against the Lions, number twos didn't win the game,
that's all right. They were having such a fun time
out there, Aaron like, I don't know if you watched
it, it was like in the middle of the day on Saturday,

(21:21):
I was I was home, my son had you know,
like baseball, and then it was like there was this
like lowl in the afternoon. I'm like, oh, Ill put
on an NFL network and the Chiefs and I'm like,
mahomes Kelsey, was she Rice Padjaco. They're all out there
and like not one of them is bitching, one of
them is complaining that one of them is even questioning.

(21:42):
They're in there. They're in a full lather mahomestress but
behind the back pass Like I don't know, man, like
if you're talking about is this team gonna buckle under
the pressure of a three peet? I don't know if
I've ever seen a looser, more confident, more more loving,
joyous team than the Chiefs that I saw on Saturday.
And now like they're not going to play against the

(22:03):
Bears tomorrow night. When they played Precs, like they it
all like the what's the term, like the hey is
in the born like they're good. They'll wait two weeks
and then they'll be ready to go two weeks from
now when they play the Ravens. But like, I don't know, man,
I've got to make my Super Bowl pick. You know,
there's a lot of hype and a lot of expectations
on who I'm gonna pick. I'm telling you now, two
weeks out, it might be disingenuous if I even come

(22:24):
on to this thing and say, well, I'm really considering
another team in the AFC. Like they look loaded, and
gosh do they have fun doing.

Speaker 2 (22:30):
It, And just the comparison between as a Bills fan,
like we are going through the Bills have so many
injuries in pre season and the Chiefs are, like you said,
throwing behind the back passes and like Xavier Worthy looks incredible,
and yeah, they they got to be all smiles over there.

Speaker 1 (22:50):
They look good. Broncos named bo Nix the starter. I
don't know if it was officially. I've known this. Ye hey,
news flash, I've known this, and they weren't Zach Wilson
and Jaredson, and I love that. Like there's like news
like the second Sean Payton drafted a quarter twelfth overall,
Like he's probably gonna start, especially when he's got sixty
one career starts in college.

Speaker 3 (23:11):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (23:12):
I want everyone to be careful here because Sean is
a cheerleader for his guys, and Sean I've known very well.
And Sean came out and has just been raving and
did an interview with Chase Daniel and Diana Russini. They
traveled out to Denver, and like he was glowing about Bonnicks.
Bonix has been unbelievable in preseason. And the same people

(23:32):
not Diana Chase, but like the same people who who
mocked and scoffed at a bo Knicks draft pick in April,
a lot of people did. They're like, Bonix is not
worthy of a top twelve pick. What is Sean Payton
doing with it? Are now being like, well, bo Nicks
is the man, Like he looks good and like he
has n't taken an NFL snap between that draft and
the hype machine. Now, I would just say, slow down,

(23:54):
it's not going to be bow Knicks out of the
gates lighting the world on fire. I do think he
won the job outright. I do think he's an incredibly
accurate quarterback. But like I'm seeing a lot of people
that I follow in the media a lot of people
I think have really strong voices in the NFL, like
already just assuming because he's starting and because Sean Payton

(24:14):
put his name behind it, that bone Knicks is gonna
be absolutely electric. Slow down, slow down. It's gonna take
a while. I'm telling you this. You're in the division
where you're facing Herbert and the Chargers and Mahomes. The Chiefs,
like the Broncos are have to put up a lot
of points. I think they're gonna be much improved this year.
But I just want to say, slow down on crowning
bow Knicks and expecting him to just come out of

(24:35):
the gates and beat Drew Brees.

Speaker 2 (24:37):
All right.

Speaker 1 (24:37):
A couple other items little housekeeping here as far as
NFL stuff goes hard knocks, be careful again, be careful
of the hard knocks hype machine. I always like to
proceed with caution here, But holy do they look fun
on offense. Like Caleb is electric on this show. And

(24:59):
they had him biked up against the Bengals in the
first half and just said, you know, are you nervous.
He's like, no, I'm not. I never for get nervous.
Like oh, like don't put that on film.

Speaker 2 (25:10):
Such but such. I loved that clip because it's him
saying I did get nervous the first time, and I
threw like an interception first play or something, and from
then on I was like, Okay, it's not worth it
to get nervous. Like I love that, Yes, it is
really risky to be like, no, I never got nervous,
but that that story behind it. I love that there
is a there.

Speaker 3 (25:30):
Is a very thin line and like a really small
like loophole to thread of being an arrogant, cocky asshole
and a confident, likable, charming, very talented guy.

Speaker 1 (25:49):
And I somehow I'm watching this Hard Knocks and I'm like,
every time Caleb inches to the former, he like does
something that endears himself to the audience and to me,
and I'm like, all right, I think he's on the ladder.
A couple of things that I love. He was on
part of my take, and he explained that like the
Heisman trust in him to the Heisman, and the story
that came out was that like he wasn't going to
go unless they like fulfilled his demands. His demands were

(26:12):
that his offensive lineman got to go with him, I've
never heard that before. Eventually the Heisman Trust agreed to that,
and like he showed up with his entire offensive line.
I love that. There was this story that, you know,
he's selfish guy coming out of the draft, all this stuff,
and we've waxed poetic and talked a million words about
in the pre draft process about Caleb. But like I

(26:33):
told the story and I want to bring it up
again that he didn't work out, he didn't do all
the stuff that everyone asked him to. He wasn't looking to,
you know, throw at the combine, and there was a
lot of questions on that Friday night. Caleb's there with
a camera and I'm like, first of all, I don't
know what the hell is he a shutter bug? Now?
Is he? You know? Ansel Adams? I have no idea,

(26:55):
But he's there Friday night. No other quarterbacks are there.
They work out Saturdays. It's defensive back drills, and Caleb
was there just to support his few teammates who played
at USC and he was like, oh, to be there
to cheer them on. I'm like all right. And then
he was taking photos because that's like a hobby is
I'm like, I love that cool guy. The last part
is hard Knocks reveals that like as much as he's

(27:17):
the first overall pick and a signing bonus was thirty
five million dollars. What I dig about Caleb you're watching this,
he doesn't carry himself like he's above Austin Reid, who's
an undrafted guy out to Western Kentucky via West Florida.
He doesn't carry himself above Brett Rippon, and he certainly
doesn't carry himself above Tyson Bagent, who started games last

(27:37):
year and comes out of Division two Shepherd. In fact,
if anything, he's taking the piss out of himself throughout
the show. He's the one who at the Rookie Show
bombed singing John Legend, and like he's loving these other
guys and cheering them on and they are equals on
the sideline, Like, I don't know, man, there's no veteran
in that room. Like you look at Jaden Daniels. He's

(28:00):
got Marcus Mariota, you go up to uh, you know,
look at what JJ McCarthy had before the injury. He's
got Sam Darnold, And the other rookie is like Drake
may jor Kobe Burssett's there and it's kind of like
one of these dynamics where it's like, all right, we're
gonna learn from this guy. Look if Brett Rippen's the
veteran in the room. Brett Rippon was cut by the
Rams after one game against the Packers last year. It

(28:20):
played so poorly. I don't think mcs they ever wanted
to see him, you know, have to dress up again.
They like released him in after the Green Bay game.
He's the veteran in the room, and I so respect
the fact that Caleb's like still seeding respect to these
guys because some of them are older, some of them
have been there, and like Tyson Bagett started a couple
games in the NFL, and for that, Caleb respects it

(28:41):
and he's treating them like equals, at least from what
we can see, even though he's obviously the far superior talent. Overall,
I really loved the Giants off season hard Knocks. I'm
liking the Bears hard Knocks. One thing I thought was
really cool, which I don't recall ever, like being shown

(29:01):
Ryan Poles is trying to get Matthew Judon. In the
last episode, he's trying drap woman hands up, going to
Atlanta and the Ryan Poles basically is I'm not gonna
say that he said this, but like what I like,
trust the process in this one, where like all along,
like they wanted to sign him to an extension, Judnon
didn't want to sign an extension. They wanted to get
him locked up for long term. Judah wasn't looking to

(29:23):
do that, and like Poles was like, all right, then,
I guess we have to let him go somewhere else.
And Atlanta was willing to sign him and willing to
play him just on this one year deal and willing
to trade that third round pick. But like when a
trade is being discussed, usually teams are really cagey about
what gets out if it doesn't happen. The Bears have
final edit on Hard Knocks, and we're cool with having

(29:45):
that in there that like, hey, now, look if Matthew
Judon goes on and has twenty sacks or has fifteen
sacks and is a beast on Atlanta like the film's
out there that Poles was like, no, we're not gonna
bend on that thing. We're going to stick to the process,
which I don't know, I kind of respect.

Speaker 2 (30:03):
Yeah, it reminds me a lot of the like you
were mentioning the Giants hard knocks, where they're in the
room and they're saying, these are the receivers that we
would take. Yeah, we like neighbors over Rome, but if
Marvin Harrison is there, maybe we take him. Oh no,
actually I have neighbors over Marvin Harrison. All right. I
mean like hearing all those discussions come out so soon

(30:25):
after the draft, not ten years later, when we already
know some of the legacy of these players, it's it's
really interesting and it is a little risky.

Speaker 1 (30:34):
Yeah, okay, let's get to my ten breakout players of
twenty twenty four. Can we get some music? Can we
do some? Can you play me some? Can you play
me some jelly roll or some Chaboozi or we can't

(30:56):
do that.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
Here is some non copyrighted Shahboozy esque music goes here.

Speaker 1 (31:04):
Kevin Shaboozi inserted here. All right, here is my list.
If you're not aware where I was talking about Caleb
Williams and how he's not he walks that theme line
and kind of walks on the right side of not
being a cocky, arrogant asshole when it comes to my
preseason predictions. I'm on the way other end of that.
I am a absolute for brains, annoying person, insufferable in many ways.

(31:28):
But I usually am talking to the coaches throughout summer
and I'm always asking. And this is one thing that
I actually put work into. I say, give me a
breakout player that nobody's talking about. So, with no further ado,
ten players and I think are going to break out
standout seasons that aren't obvious names. We start out in
Denver with a five foot seven running back out of

(31:51):
Youngstown State. His name Jaliel McLaughlin. Jalil McLaughlin, twenty three
years old, played in every game last season. Okay, did
have seventy six carries, But he is your Darren Sprolls
of the twenty twenty four season. We know Javonte Williams
is going to be the headline guy. They drafted Isaac

(32:14):
Austin May out of college where he's going to get
a lot of carries. But Jalil McLaughlin Denver Broncos scatback
Darren Sprolls type. Now what I draft him in fantasy football? Maybe,
but I would say more than anything, he's the guy
that Scott Hansen's going to be like, Holy cow, We've
got another Joel McLaughlin play this week where he is

(32:36):
going to be the safety valve in a lot of
ways on third down and he's going to be one
of these dynamic players and special teams. Five foot seven
player for the Denver Broncos. Picture Darren Sprolls with the Saints.
That's what we're looking at. Number nine. A player who
was highlighted on Hard Knocks this week and I was
almost furious that they stole it from me because no
one's been talking about him. Punter for the Chicago Bears,

(32:59):
Tory Taylor. He is a twenty seven year old at
a Melbourne, Australia, was a Australian rules football player and
if you watch college football, you know he has been
dominant at Iowa, maybe the best player out of Iowa
in the last several seasons. And that includes all these
tight ends and defensive ends and the offensive linemen that

(33:20):
they've been churning out. Highest drafted punter since twenty nineteen
when the forty nine ers drafted Mitch with Shnowski the
Chicago Bears. And it's the Windy City and there's a
ton of elements. It's as if they drafted an offensive
weapon with this guy. Everything I have heard out of
camp is that he is an absolute game changer and

(33:41):
he will be a breakout player. Australian punter the first
time I ever put a punter on this list. Tory
Taylor is number nine. Number eight, we go to Buffalo
Khalil Shakir. Obvious reasons here. Gave Davis's gone, Stefan Diggs
is gone. Who's going to step up? I think Dalton
Kinkaid might end up being the biggest pass catcher in
this offense. I also think James Cook and Ray Davis

(34:03):
are going to play huge roles. Khalil Shakir is going
to have to have a career breakout season. He's entering
his third year. He's had some big plays. He was
the only Bills wide receiver besides Diggs and Davis with
more than two hundred receiving yards last year. Obviously, they
brought in Keyon Coleman. We've got some other veterans they've got,
but I think Shaki is going to have a huge
year for the Buffalo Bills. And Josh Allen has expressed

(34:26):
how much he likes throwing to the guy number seven
on the list. We go to Vegas and we go
to a pass rusher and it's not Max Crosby, and
it's not Christian Wilkins, and it is not their big
stud defensive end Tyree who they got last year in
the draft. It's Malcolm Kots out of Buffalo, twenty six
years old, third round pick twenty twenty one. Koons last

(34:47):
year very quietly ranked second on the Raiders in both
quarterback hits with seventeen and sacks, and all eight sacks
came under Antonio Pierce as the interim head coach. I
really like what Koons did. He's the kind of guy
on Buffalo that no one's talking about. But you'll be
shocked when you turn up and you're watching it. You're like,
holy shit, Malcolm Coons has you know, thirteen sacks this season?

(35:09):
Where did that come from? Well, there's a tension going
acrossby attention going to Wilkins, and I think Malcolm Coons
showed that he can do the job on the other
end of those guys. This season. Number six, we go
to New York and we don't go to the Jets,
we go to the Giants. Deonte Banks six foot two,
two hundred pound corner second year guy for New York.
He was drafted last year in the first round out

(35:29):
of Maryland. So much attention on Cavon Thibadeau, so much
attention on Dexter Lawrence. The Giants have quietly added some
real talent in the defensive backfield the last couple of years.
I like Banks, I like flat out of LSU. But
I think Banks enters the twenty twenty four season with
a lot of eyes on him. And think about the
guys in the division. AJ Brown, Deavonte Smith, Terry McLaurin,

(35:50):
Johan Dotson, CD Lamb, Brandon Cooks like he's going to
grab those number one players and he's gonna have to
do the job. Deontay Banks of the Giants is number six.
Let's keep rolling number five. Another defensive back I am going.
Brian Ranch for the Detroit Lions last year was a
second round pick out out of Alabama. Played in fifteen games,

(36:14):
had three interceptions, had a touchdown. He led Detroit with
thirteen passes defended. They were trying to pick on him
in the safety spot. I think he's an awesome player.
He showed flashes last year, missed a couple games with injuries.
I think Brian Branch steps up and has like one
of those all pros Pro Bowl seasons at the safety
spot for Detroit, working under the Great Aaron Glenn. Number four,

(36:37):
we go to Tampa and I'm going with a pass
rusher ya Ya Dyabi, Yes, Yaya Dabi ya Ya. Last
year had a breakout rookie moment or two. But I
think he's gonna put it all together. I'm gonna put
it on paper right now. Ya Ya. Dabby's gonna finish
in the top ten in sacks in the NFL. He
wears number zero. I love his game, I love his personality.

(37:00):
He does a whole dance when he gets a sack.
I think he's going to be electric this year. Ya
Ya Dabi as a pass rusher. Now we're down to
the final three. Number three is a third year tight
end for a team that I don't think I've mentioned
on the podcast since the draft, maybe when they took
a wide receiver at third overall. I'm going or fourth overall.

(37:21):
I'm going Trey McBride out of the Arizona Cardinals organization.
Completely anonymous team right now on offense. But just wait,
he and Kyler started picking things up at the end
of the year. He led Arizona last season with one
hundred and six targets. He also had eighty one catches
with almost one thousand receiving guards. He was second on

(37:42):
Arizona and receiving touchdowns too, and I think he's only
going to get better. Trey McBride tight end. We always
talk about Kelsey and Kittle, and then Laporta entered the
conversation last year, and everyone's waiting on Pits, Everyone's waiting
on Hockinson. Hockinson's had some big games and obviously has
had some big seasons. I think Trey McBride emerges this

(38:02):
year and he's that dude. All Right, we're down to
the final two. We preface this, Yere. I was really
tempted to put Bijon Robinson in this top two. Aaron,
you're listening to this. If I was to go on
Good Morning Football Friday and I'm like, Bjeon Robinson's my
breakout player. Would you say he's already broken out or
would you say that's fair?

Speaker 2 (38:24):
I would say he's not broken out because I think
I think that what his potential is and what everyone
expected from him last year, he didn't quite reach. He
looked incredible. He was my favorite player to watch with
the overhead cam where it follows him and you see
him drinking everyone out. He was incredible, but it was
just like I want him to be CMC, like I

(38:46):
want him to be okay, amazing.

Speaker 1 (38:49):
So I've got to make a decision because I'm putting
this list out. So far, I love my list. Number
two of my list is certainly not a breakout player yet,
so I think he qualifies. But I also like Bijeon
as my number one guy, and right now I don't
have him on the list. Tell me how you would
sort this out and if I can have a time
for first. Number two is Kenneth Walker the third? Okay,

(39:11):
I love this guy's game and he was a second
round pick in the twenty twenty two NFL draft, but
he has been hampered with injury. He's had one thousand
scrimmag yards and nine touchdowns in each of his first
two seasons. He's the first player in Seahawks' history to
do that. But he hasn't had that breakout year, and
he hasn't certainly had that year where you're like, holy cow,

(39:31):
He's one of those guys. I think Kenneth Walker is
one of those guys. And I think so in this
grub offense, that that's the offensive coordinator in Seattle. And
I go back to Mike McDonald coaching against Kenneth Walker
in college, and Kenneth Walker was playing for Michigan State
and Mike McDonald was for Michigan, And I might ask

(39:52):
you to google this so we could patch this together
so it's quicker. What were the numbers that Kenneth Walker
had against Michigan his final year as a Michigan State spartan,
because Mike McDonald was the defensive coordinator for the Michigan
Wolverines that day.

Speaker 2 (40:07):
And if you have it up there, just that game,
just that one.

Speaker 1 (40:11):
Game, that one game. I think it was twenty twenty.

Speaker 2 (40:14):
Two, So I can give you a small bit of
what he had twenty twenty twenty.

Speaker 1 (40:21):
Let's think here, how if the twenty twenty two draft
is where he was selected, give me twenty twenty one
Michigan State versus Michigan Kenneth Walker's statline.

Speaker 2 (40:30):
He ran for one hundred and ninety three yards and
five touchdowns.

Speaker 1 (40:35):
Get the hell out of here with that. So if
your head coach is like, all right, I'm taking the
job in Seattle, and I got this charbonnet and I've
got you know, a DK Metcalf and a gino Oh,
I've got that guy. That guy terrorized me. Trust me.
They know what he can do. And I think that
game's highlights just like played tricks and Mike McDonald said

(40:56):
he's the new head coach of Seattle. That was good.
Maybe I'll make it too much of a deal of it.
Everything I hear is that he's healthy. He's the dude.
Kenneth Walker is number two, which leads to number one.
I have to fix this and do something. So I'm
gonna unveil this on Good Morning Football, and it's gonna
be like here's Sugger's listenever, and I might find a
way to be artful about this. I might move Walker back,
I might scratch branch whatever, We'll figure it out. Number

(41:18):
one on my lists is Jaden Daniels. Jaden Daniels to
the Washington Commanders. And maybe I'm being asymmetric because everyone's
talking about Klub and I just think that I think
Jayden Daniel is gonna be the offensive rookie of the year.
I think he's gonna have a CJ. Stroud like season,
and I go by. Cliff Kingsbury is offensive coordinator, raving

(41:41):
about him to me, and I go by knowing that
Cliff had Kyler as a rookie and was able to
get him going right from go Kyler was great his
rookie year. It was really fun to watch. I go by.
This quarterback has played in so many big games, has
played against so much a list competition, and has been
so good in camp that this is my asymmetric thing.

(42:03):
I'm putting Jaden Daniels as my break out player of
the year. And then you're gonna say, well, where does
Caleb fall on that list? And I'm like, I don't know.
I think Caleb is good too, or where's Botnicks go?
I don't know. But like Aaron before, as of workshopping this,
how do you do you put bijon one and maybe
put Jayden two and Walker three? And then or do

(42:25):
I is it more? You know, boom, It's I go,
Jayden Daniels is the breakout player of the year.

Speaker 2 (42:30):
I mean Jayden Daniels number one?

Speaker 1 (42:32):
Is that?

Speaker 2 (42:34):
I like that?

Speaker 1 (42:35):
And you know Caleb on the list. It's like a station.

Speaker 2 (42:37):
Yeah right, I think you know, like you're saying, Caleb
is looks incredible, but Caleb also has this incredible supporting cast.
And not that Terry McLaurin is not a great wide receiver,
but he is not DJ Moore, Keenan, Allen Roman doonsay
and I love Johan Dotson. I think you know, I

(42:59):
think Johan Dotson is like a very good player. He
has incredible hands, and he he's just seems like a
nice guy. Like watching interviews with him. He didn't follow
up his rookie year last year, and so there the
the Washington team is like brand new, and if Jade
and Daniels can overcome that and have a really high

(43:20):
perform in year as a rookie, that would be So what.

Speaker 1 (43:25):
Do you do with my Bijon?

Speaker 2 (43:27):
I love that?

Speaker 1 (43:27):
Do you include him? Do you say last year he
broke out? Do I stick him in there? And I
mean Brian Branch is a safety. If I don't put
Brian Branch on this list, no one's gonna blink twice?
Do I go ya ya at five? Okay? Four? Kenneth Walker.

Speaker 2 (43:46):
I like Kenneth above Bijon as a breakout.

Speaker 1 (43:50):
I think Jon's better than Kenneth. Who'd I have?

Speaker 2 (43:53):
Yeah, you had try McBride at three, you had yah
yah at four, McBride at three.

Speaker 1 (43:57):
Okay, so let's go this that. We're gonna workshop this
five Yah yeah for McBride three, Walker two, Bjeon one,
Jaden And is that like holy, that's it? Or someone

(44:20):
at home gonna say, how is Bijon Robinson a breakout player?
He's going first overall in fantasy? Maybe I just scrap
Bejon altogether.

Speaker 2 (44:27):
Say yeah, I think if you left Bijeon off, no
one would be would be like Wow, He's He's forgetting
the most obvious thing because I think, like me saying
Bijeon is not has not broken out yet, is more
because of how high I think he can get. I
think he looked amazing last year.

Speaker 1 (44:46):
Okay, with no further ado, we have our list. That's it. Uh.
Programming note, Good morning Football. Thursday morning, I'll be at
Jets camp. I'm watching practice, interviewing Aaron Rodgers, not for
the show, but for my production meeting needs Friday, standard
issue whatever, Saturday, CBS Local, New York. I'll be with

(45:12):
Iron Eagle, and I'm calling the Jets Giants preseason game.
Let's hope we get some starters. If not, I better
do some research quick. I've been doing it, but like gosh,
there's only so much Quantes Stiggers information I can offer you.
He's the chance defensive back. That's a rookie. We'll see.
I hope to do a good job, but who knows.

(45:33):
And then next week I'm all from Good Morning Football,
one last breath, but I think we still might be
able to do a podcast next week. Maybe I'll get
a guest. I announced Colton McCoy's retirement. We did that
in coordination. I love Colt. He texted me and was like,
why don't you announce it? And then you can get
some love for it, and then I can just follow up.
And so maybe I'll get Colt on here because I

(45:54):
think he's got great stories and it's always been good there.
It is forty five minutes. That's a podcast, bro. We
went from Jelly roll to the honor roll of my
top ten Aaron. He said with Peter Schreger, what do
you say?

Speaker 2 (46:08):
I love it? Awesome for soon, all right, let's go
buy some expensive baseball cards.

Speaker 1 (46:12):
I know I want a ya Yad d Yadi card. Today.
Was ya Yad signing autographs or just.

Speaker 2 (46:18):
I don't think any Yeah, they were in camp.

Speaker 1 (46:34):
