Speaker 1 (00:04):
Good Morning Football is the production of the NFL in
partnership with iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:22):
Good Morning, oh Man, Happy May the fourth be with you.
Kyle Brand is beside himself the Jason McCarty and his
lack of Star Wars knowledge. This is going to have
to be settled after the show because we have football
to talk about. This is Good Morning Football live in
New York City.

Speaker 3 (00:39):
You already know what day it is.

Speaker 2 (00:40):
I'm Jamie Ertl, Hans Solo, Jason McCarty, and Mike you'rifolo. Mike,
where do you in the scale of Star Wars knowledge
right here across the table, where do you lean more towards?

Speaker 4 (00:51):
Well, I'm definitely closer to Kyle, I think, but I
mean just sorry, sorry, yeah, not Hans Hans and Franz.

Speaker 5 (00:58):
That's that's different.

Speaker 4 (00:59):
But like the number of lights, like some of the
questions we asked the number of lightsabers in fact that
I mean, I can't touch that.

Speaker 2 (01:05):
We played a trivia game earlier in the show.

Speaker 3 (01:07):
We thought it was going to be comical in a
way that Jason.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
McCarty doesn't know Star Wars. There's not knowing it. And
then there's Jason McCarty it was alarming. Actually, how little
just like life reference you have to Star.

Speaker 6 (01:19):
Wars not alarming at all. I've gotten multiple tweets like, yeah,
I'm right with you. I have no idea what any
of this is. My friends have texted me like, well,
why y'all talking about Star Wars like they have no idea?
What made the fourth means to Star Wars Nation?

Speaker 2 (01:32):
Well, we have officially learned as Kyle Brant knows all
and whether it be Star Wars or where he ranks
his NFL quarterbacks, what he is spoken word if you will,
because Kyle's been ranking both AFC and NFC quarterbacks this week,
and Kyle, how's it been going for you?

Speaker 5 (01:49):
Great?

Speaker 1 (01:49):
Yesterday did AFC? There are a lot of reactions I saw.
We talked about how Trevor Lawrence might have been under rank.
Trevor Lawrence himself tweeted about it. Did Triva Lawrence said?
The game's not played on paper. Trevor, I totally respect
and thank you for the interest, and thank you that
you care enough the even acknowledge I love you. I
hope you have a great season and nothing personal. That's awesome,
that's really cool. And we did the NFC today we did.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
Indeed, go take a look and share your feelings directly
at Kyle Brandt if you want to. It is Thursday.
It's nine am, which means time for a throwdown Thursday.

Speaker 3 (02:19):
All right.

Speaker 2 (02:21):
Seven tiers of quarterbacks within each conference today, as you mentioned,
it was the NFC. Yesterday AFC undisputed top to yer
quarterback in the AFC was is Patrick Mahomes, but there
are two others lurking one level below, Joe Burrow and
Josh Allen.

Speaker 7 (02:34):
Throw it out.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
Question number one is which AFC quarterback is more likely
to move up Kyle's top tier to sit alongside Patrick Mahomes.

Speaker 3 (02:42):
Is it Joe Burrow or Josh Allen, Mike.

Speaker 5 (02:43):
We're going to We're going to go.

Speaker 4 (02:45):
I am going to go with Josh Allen on this one.
I love the Dalton Kincaid edition. I think he is
NFL ready. I think he is going to contribute. But
there are also a couple of additions to this offense
that I think may wind up being a little bit
under the radar, underrated, whatever you want to call it.
Trent Sherfield and Deontay Hardy. Trent Sherfield last year for
the Miami Dolphins. He had a play against the San

(03:06):
Francisco forty nine ers in which he reached the speed
of almost twenty one miles per hour on a seventy
five yard TD. The problem is on that offense, it's
just hard to get the football, especially with speed guys.
So now I think that that's a big addition right there.
And then Deontay Hardy, a guy that they also signed here.
He's been a return guy, so you've seen this speed
on display there, but also his ability to get down

(03:27):
the field as well. I think this offense is going
to be a little bit more vertical, a little bit
more for teams to worry about. I think Josh Allen
jumps up well.

Speaker 6 (03:35):
I like that when this question came across him. Like
the tough thing is when you look at those tiers.
You have Patrick Mahomes there, you have Josh Allen, Joe Burrow,
and yes, they could bump up a tier, but Patrick
Mahomes may just create another tier to go up above
and they may never be able to reach him. But
if I had to choose one to do it, I'm
gonna go with Joe Burrow, and I'm gonna do it

(03:56):
because of the supporting cast that he still has there.
He still has Jamar Chase, he still has t Higgins.
Tyler Boyd is still in the slot there for him.
When you mentioned those three receivers, it is my goodness
Tea against is a number one receiver that they may
be able to resign but may go and sign to
be a huge deal somewhere else. And obviously their backfield
with Joe Mixon, and then they've also signed Arv Smith,

(04:17):
who's dealt with some injuries from the Minnesota Vikings. But
this is a guy who's fast when he gets the
ball in his hands, elusive and things of that nature.
So I think Joe Burrow, only going into his fourth year,
we still haven't seen the very peak of where he
can get. And that's no knock on Josh Allen because
he's an absolute beast as well.

Speaker 1 (04:35):
The term for Mahomes is you hear the term boat race,
where is a lead that cannot be closed upon because
everybody's using the same win. It's just over, you can't
catch up. I don't know if Mahomes has a true
boat race yet. He's been to three Super Bowls, he's
won two. Neither of the other guys have won any
so both these guys, hopefully all three of them are
going to play for the next fifteen to sixteen years.

Speaker 5 (04:52):
We'll see.

Speaker 1 (04:52):
But it's tough too much in anybody tracking down Mahomes.
If Alan or Burrow are the Super Bowl MVP next year,
even still, are they in the same class as Mahomes,
You know what I'm saying, Like we have such respect
for Mahomes.

Speaker 5 (05:03):
But to answer the question, and.

Speaker 1 (05:05):
I saw a headline the other day that was after
the draft, you talked about Dalton Kincaid, Josh Allen has
got his Travis kelcey.

Speaker 5 (05:12):
Now I was like, I don't know about that. I
like Kinkaid as much.

Speaker 1 (05:14):
As the next guy, but I don't know all this
baby Kelsey stuff, baby gronk that's always very dangerous. Dalton
Kinkad could be a perennial pro bowler and that's probably
not still going to be Travis kelce But I do
like what he does to the offense. I think they
were pretty close last year, and I think Josh got
some more toys to play with more than Joe did,
so I will give him that in a tiebreaker.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
I think despite Josh Allen getting more toys to play
within this draft.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
I think Joe Burrow, like you know, when you're doing
a workout and you do like the legs, step ups
on them.

Speaker 2 (05:42):
So I think it was I think Patrick Mahomes is
already up on the step. I think Burrow had his
foot up there, and I think Josh Allen was still
down here. So the fact that Burrow, maybe Josh Allen
got his foot up on that step with the new
toys that he got in the draft, But I think
it's Joe Burrow. I think because of the games as
he's beaten Patrick Mahomes in I think it's a travesty
that he hasn't gotten.

Speaker 3 (06:04):
I know he's been to a Super Bowl, but hasn't one.

Speaker 5 (06:06):
One is just Jamie. The last game, he was much
better than Josh Allen in Buffalo. That's just a fact.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
So I think he's closer to getting up to that level.
If you had to hold Patrick Mahomes down, I think
we're always closer than Josh Allen is to getting up there.
Those three yesterday. Yesterday things got a little tense on set.
Sorry Kyle, when I expressed my disdain for not it
wasn't it is for Kyle's taste of music.

Speaker 3 (06:31):
It was distained.

Speaker 5 (06:34):
You disdain my taste of music or just don't relate.

Speaker 3 (06:36):
I relate.

Speaker 5 (06:38):
I didn't feel this day's today. So Jimi doesn't have
an ounce of disdain in her body. That's not who.

Speaker 2 (06:44):
Jamie is of sewing more musical division amongst friends. Here's
throw down number. Which concert would you rather attend? Tool
or Taylor Swift? Folks know where Kyle and Brent and
I stand on this, so please, Michael, Jason present your
cases and then we had to decide.

Speaker 3 (07:03):
Kyle make your case for Tall.

Speaker 1 (07:05):
Okay, I would love to attend a Taylor Swift concert.
I have no coure with Taylor Swift. I listen to
music all the time my family. I'm gonna tell you
guys on this, here's what I get. I'm not gonna
touch the music. I'm not gonna touch anything. Friday night concert. Okay, Mike,
you've been working all week, You're doing this show. They're
slapping you down to Philly. You have the kids at home. Jason,
you're doing a million segments when you're up at the

(07:27):
screen dissecting some old tape of what you're just you're gassed.

Speaker 5 (07:30):
Friday Night.

Speaker 1 (07:31):
You can go to Taylor Swift concert that is gonna
last three hours and forty four minutes, three forty four
of Taylor Swift with innumerable countless young teeny bopper girls.
Or you go to Tool I'm gonna have you out
of there in two hours. There is no opening band,
there is no encore. They play the last song. Let's
come on, everybody, go the hell home. It is a

(07:52):
concise night. You're going to bed early. The babysitter's cheaper.
The music is what the music is. But I'm gonna
appeal to you guys on a practical level, and all
of you as well.

Speaker 5 (08:01):
It's a nice, tight evening.

Speaker 1 (08:03):
We can get dinner, get home, go to sleep, and
see a great show with beautiful musicians.

Speaker 5 (08:06):
That's my pitch.

Speaker 2 (08:07):
So your concert doesn't have enough songs that are that
people want to attend for long.

Speaker 5 (08:13):
Enough, neither tail you're three four. I don't care if.

Speaker 1 (08:18):
Michael Jackson crawls that from the Dead and does a
concert with Elvis.

Speaker 2 (08:20):
The woman is pulling music, and the tour is called
eras because she couldn't put just a single title on
the tour. Because it amasses six catalogs, six albums of
hers that she was unable to tour during the pandemic,
which is why it takes three forty four with no breaks.

Speaker 3 (08:36):
Mind you.

Speaker 2 (08:36):
In Christian lubaton heels, she goes.

Speaker 3 (08:39):
Over fi genres.

Speaker 4 (08:41):
I think it's so that's a weird number.

Speaker 8 (08:44):
Is.

Speaker 2 (08:44):
There is musicality, there is beautiful lyrics, there is artistry.
She dives into her stage at one point. She has
boxes of herself in all these different eras. If you
don't want to go be entertained by somebody, if you
have a great ticket, don't mind the teeny boppers, it
doesn't matter. If you can afford and tell her Swift ticket,
then you can afford your babysitter staying longer at your house.

Speaker 3 (09:04):
Go to a Taylor Swift concent I.

Speaker 6 (09:05):
Don't know if you were going to breathe daring your Yeah,
that's good.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
Where am I sitting for tool? Am I in the
mosh pit? Because that's definitely what I think.

Speaker 1 (09:14):
I think, No, I think, well, there's much of a
mosh pit anymore though. Twol fans are guys in their
forties and fifties. It's like you, Mike, like it's chill.
It's not going to be a lot of that. But
let's just assume for the exercise that you have really
good tickets for both venus whatever you want.

Speaker 5 (09:25):
I want to be in a suite. It's the end
of a long time. I'm in a suite for both.

Speaker 4 (09:28):
If you want not to be catered, I just want
to be in a sweep. I've been to a Taylor
Swift concert.

Speaker 5 (09:33):
Ah. Ok the direct.

Speaker 4 (09:35):
TV Super Bowl show in Houston, I believe it was.

Speaker 5 (09:39):
I went with my wife. It was confetti flying.

Speaker 4 (09:41):
She announced to the crowd it was her only show
of the year, and I was like, boy, I feel
pretty much to be here. It was a fantastic show.
Are you regretting that you weren't there? I mean, you're
you're writhing over.

Speaker 7 (09:51):
I am, I'm sorry.

Speaker 5 (09:52):
I didn't mean to rub in jealousy.

Speaker 4 (09:54):
Okay, it was also a free ticket.

Speaker 5 (09:55):
I mean it was.

Speaker 4 (09:57):
It would be Taylor Swift awesome.

Speaker 5 (09:59):
I would go again.

Speaker 6 (10:01):
Three hours forty four pure joy, two hours.

Speaker 5 (10:06):
Two hours, respectful of people's time.

Speaker 7 (10:08):
Take it a lot cheaper?

Speaker 5 (10:10):
Yeah, oh yeah, way cheaper. That's a that's a big
part of it. Way cheaper, like a quarter of the price.

Speaker 2 (10:16):
Maybe you played thirteen years the other fall you wont
a super Bowl.

Speaker 5 (10:19):
Jamie spending your money.

Speaker 6 (10:20):
Now, you got to decide what's worth it and what's not.
So if I'm gonna go to a concert, this Friday
night concert starts at eight, I can go to the
Tool concert and still have my Friday night until something
that like Friday is single to my may.

Speaker 7 (10:36):
I can go to the Tool.

Speaker 1 (10:37):
Concert get all like that Guy er Man or James
Keenan Taylor.

Speaker 7 (10:43):
Taylor Swift concert. That picture alone, do you think he
was the tailor?

Speaker 8 (10:46):
He was?

Speaker 5 (10:47):
That's the best timer in the world. On the right there, Denny.

Speaker 6 (10:49):
Carries me and k b Are at the Tool concert
Friday night. We're we do our two hours at Tool
and then we just take over the town and we
go out and we have a great time afterwards.

Speaker 4 (11:02):
Three hours and forty four minutes long. Best drummer in
the world, within the world, Yes, without a doubt, really yeah,
I mean we can get into side bar lars.

Speaker 5 (11:10):
No, no, no, he'd be and I don't. That's insulted.

Speaker 6 (11:15):
I didn't know Star Wars like now, let me let
him educate me.

Speaker 7 (11:18):
No no, no, no, no, no, I know I know tail.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Us with he literally his approach was getting you home.

Speaker 5 (11:24):
Faster, but I know your audience. Now, I know you
guys want to city?

Speaker 3 (11:31):
That was that was a blasted when Twitter?

Speaker 5 (11:33):
You want to go? So the Taylor's touring Tool.

Speaker 1 (11:36):
Is headline in a massive festival out of Coachella, Like.

Speaker 6 (11:39):
We take it to Twitter?

Speaker 5 (11:40):
I mean, what do you mean? Let's let's see how
it comes the generations?

Speaker 3 (11:44):
Who do you?

Speaker 9 (11:44):
Who?

Speaker 7 (11:44):
Who did you say is going to be at the
Tool concert?

Speaker 5 (11:46):
Tool Metallica a c D. What kind of fans you said?

Speaker 7 (11:50):
Democratic?

Speaker 6 (11:50):
Guys like me, like you're not spending a ton of
your time on Twitter, like they're going to vote.

Speaker 2 (11:55):
Whereas whereas there is a plethora of people who are
buying tickets to go.

Speaker 6 (11:59):
But wait, no guys like me experience Sorry, there's no
guys like you had the Tool.

Speaker 1 (12:04):
Concert ex athletes yea, fathers, Yeah, there'll be ton Okay,
what are you referring to?

Speaker 6 (12:09):
Just say you say guys like you. I want to
make sure if I'm going there, I feel comfortable. There's
guys like me and the crowd. We can bond and
enjoy it.

Speaker 1 (12:19):
Guys like you, Nah, I'm gonna I'm biting my tongue
takes the snap play fake the Barkley Jones rolls to
his left, gets a flock from Thomas. He said the
five Jones races in touchdown Giants.

Speaker 4 (12:36):
Takes the snap, rolls right, shovel past to Barkley. Barkley
in with a two pointed version. Oh little shovel past
this sake one, and then he did the rest back
to throw. He's got the pressure sacked by Tibodeau.

Speaker 8 (12:48):
The balls loose on the ground, scooped.

Speaker 4 (12:50):
Up for the end zone for a touchdown.

Speaker 1 (12:52):
Came on Thibodeau with the sack, the forest buffle, and
then the touchdown and the Giant fans rejoicing.

Speaker 4 (13:03):
Our next guest is finishing second draft as a general
manager of the New York Giants. He has over twenty
years of scouting uh an executive experience in the NFL.
Please welcome friend of the show. Giants general manager Joe Shaye.

Speaker 9 (13:15):
True.

Speaker 7 (13:17):
Thanks for having me.

Speaker 4 (13:18):
Everybody, Yes, thank you for joining us. You heard some
cheers there, maybe some applause back in the control room.
I didn't cheer. I didn't applaud. You know why because
today is Thursday. That's what one, two, three, four, five
days after the draft, and a quote from you Joe
the other day. The praise last about two days. You
don't win games in April, So what have you done
the last couple of days, Joe, That's what we want

(13:38):
to know.

Speaker 5 (13:40):
Yeah, I know, I just this.

Speaker 7 (13:42):
You love all the draft gurus and everybody talking about
the draft and the grades and all that stuff. That's
very exciting for the team. And we're always obviously excited
about our draft class and some of the new players
we acquired, but we have a long way to go
in terms of building the team, chemistry, the off season program.
You know what we do in August. Those guys got
a long way to go. They got to come in
and compete for jobs. But we're really excited the way

(14:02):
the weekend worked worked out for us, and really look
forward to getting those guys in actually come in today
for a rookie MINTI camp this weekend, So really looking
forward to getting the guys in the building and get
moving towards the twenty twenty three season.

Speaker 4 (14:14):
Well, let's talk about those draft picks specifically, and seriously.
You filled several big needs during the draft, including corner,
offensive line.

Speaker 5 (14:21):
And wide out.

Speaker 4 (14:22):
What are your takeaways when you see this full screen
pop up and all these names up there in the screen.

Speaker 7 (14:27):
Yeah, really excited. Yeah, corner was a big need. Center
was a potential need. We have confidence in some of
the guys here with Ben Brettison who was who has
played some center for us. And you know, then receiver
as well was an error where we want to do
try to improve in the off season and improve our
team speed. In those first three picks, I think it
just really worked out in terms of, you know, need

(14:49):
met the value where we had guys on the board,
and when the opportunity came to draft those three players
specifically in the first rounds, it made a lot of sense.
And it also you know, crossed off a couple needs
that we had.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
It's a great looking draft, Joe, and you should be
proud of yourself and the organization. I got bad news.
The Jets have already won the super Bowl, They've already
won the town. These things are one by going to
Madison Square Garden in May and getting big famous quarterback.

Speaker 5 (15:12):
That's just the bad news. I'm sorry.

Speaker 1 (15:14):
In the meantime, while they've been galivanting all around the
city and making headlines, you guys have.

Speaker 5 (15:18):
Been keeping your head down and going to work.

Speaker 1 (15:21):
How would you contrast the off seasons right now between
the Jets and the Giants here in New York.

Speaker 7 (15:28):
Listen, I like those you know, Joe Douglas, Salah, you know,
friends with both of those guys. You know they're doing
a great job over there. But again, we can only
control what we can control. And you know, we got
our head down, We're rolling our sleeves up. Every day,
we're going to work. We're trying to incrementally get you know,
get the roster better each day we can, whether it's
in the building, lifting, running the off season program. We're
very fortunate to have continuity amongst our staff. You know,

(15:50):
Wink Martindell return, Mike Kafka, you know, all three coordinators
are back. So I think that's very important. So again,
Daves and I both you know, very blue collar upbringings.
You know, we're gonna come to work every day. We're
gonna roll up our sleeves. We're never going to be complacent.
We're going to continue to try to roof you know,
the roster of the organization, and we're just going to
go to work every day, and you know, I think
the results will hopefully speak for themselves.

Speaker 6 (16:11):
Getting better day by day and control what you can control.
I love that, and you guys are under some control.
You place a franchise tag on Saquon Barkley, He's yet
to sign that tender. Have there been any conversations in
the last few days about a contract and everything upcoming
for him in the New York Giants.

Speaker 7 (16:28):
Yeah, we talked with his representatives last week. You know,
we had initial talks on where we might be in
terms of numbers or you know, trying to get something done,
what the appetite is to get a deal done, and
we said, hey, we'll step back, let the draft take place,
and then we'll circle back up. So at some point
over the next couple of days, you know, well we'll
circle back up. We'll have some conversations in terms of

(16:50):
you know, where we are, where they may be, and
see if we can get something done. Listen, Like, Saquan's
a very good football player. He's you know, captain last year.
You know, he's a good locker room guy. I love him.
We want him to be here, and you know, but
you got to have a deal where both parties are
happy with you know, where he end up. And that's
what we're going to try to work for. And see,
I see if we can get something with we both

(17:10):
agree on.

Speaker 8 (17:12):
Well.

Speaker 2 (17:12):
The unique part about Joe being back in early March
is that you had a decision make to make to
franchise tag either Saquon Barkley or Daniel Jones. Obviously with
Barkley because Daniel Jones then got the four year contract.
We had conversations early last season about what Daniel Jones
had to do and show to earn himself that kind
of commitment from the Giants.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
So what was that style of play?

Speaker 2 (17:33):
What did you get from him that told you that
he was going to be your guy of the future.

Speaker 7 (17:37):
Yeah, I think when you look at Daniel last year, again,
a lot of people want to get hung up on
the fifteen touchdowns and you know, maybe that wasn't you know,
numbers that people would see making what he's going to make.
But you know what he did do is he was
able to move move the offense with his arm and
his feet. He's very athletic, he's still young. Leadership wise,
he was a captain and the biggest thing for me

(17:57):
was he took care of the football. You know, we
were a team that didn't have a large margin for
air in terms of margin of victory and you know,
room to have airs and overcome adversity or difficult situations
within a game. And he took care of the football.
He had multiple fourth quarter comebacks, made big time plays
for us on third down when you know he's got
to have it moments. So I'm excited about Daniel and
his growth. And you know, hopefully we upgraded some of

(18:19):
the offensive skill set around him. And you know, again
we've got a lot of confidence in Daniel and I'm
looking forward seeing what he does in.

Speaker 4 (18:25):
Twenty twenty three, Joe, your head coach, Brian Dable has
received tons of praise for the giants turn around. But
several weeks ago, your owner John Mara put it in perspective,
take a listen to this.

Speaker 10 (18:36):
We kid him. I mean, right now he's Bono walking
around New York City. But I've told him, I said,
in this business, it doesn't take long. Ago from Bono
to Bozo said, don't get your head too big right now.
But no, he has been great, And I mean he
goes to he likes to go to Ranger games at
the Garden and they put his picture up there and

(18:57):
he gets these standing ovations. A week after week, So
it's it's a pretty cool thing to see.

Speaker 4 (19:04):
John Marraw maybe one of the more underrated quotes in
the NFL. It's a fantastic quote. Is there any particular
moment that stands out to you over the past fifteen
months that you've shared with your head coach, whether it
was hugging after or win. I remember the celebration back
in Week one. I remember the celebration when you made
the playoffs, the plane ride home.

Speaker 5 (19:22):
What stands out to you?

Speaker 7 (19:24):
Yeah, first off, back on John's quote there, I text
him at the Rangers game last week because John was
at the game too, and I went with Dave's and
you know, I shot him at text said Bono's in
the building. So if you hear the crowd or that's
that's who it is. Bonos here. Daves and I have
a great relationship. I think the general manager head coach
relationship in that communication is very important, and Daves and
I have that. I just might My daughter just had

(19:46):
a birthday on Monday, so I was scrolling through some
pictures and you know, I came across, you know, our
Week one win versus Tennessee. So his first win as
a head coach. My first win as a general manager
and you know, being in his in the coach's locker
room afterwards, there's a great picture of him and I
hold in the game ball and I just you know,
all the hard work that you know, he had been
through through his career to get to that point, you know,

(20:07):
the hard work you know that I endured to get
where I was, and it was just a really cool
moment for the two of us to share, and that picture,
you know, is really cool to reflect on that. And
then of course we go out in the locker room
and there's videos of Dave's dancing the Biggie, you know,
the Juicy and everybody going after it. So that's one
of my favorite moments, you know, our first win as
GM and head coach, and it was a long time

(20:28):
coming and it was just a great moment to reflect upon.

Speaker 6 (20:32):
Joel, I'm gonna assume you have the same level of
dance moves as Able and you can get in there
and dance to Juicy the best on Happy Birthday. Happy
Birthday to the door. I hope she had a really
good one. And I know what it's like. You're going
through those pictures over the years of how much they're
growing and over the years for the Giants franchise, you
guys haven't won many playoff games, which you got your

(20:53):
first one since Super Bowl forty six, and managing those
type of results and going into next year expectations, do
you think they're gonna be higher or what going into
this twenty twenty three season.

Speaker 7 (21:04):
Yeah, that's a great question, and naturally I think they
will be higher. And you know when we came in here,
you know what we talked about was let's just have progress.
We got to keep getting better. Again, I said, day
by day earlier and control what we can control. I
truly believe in that. And you know, throughout the off season,
once we're free agency draft, you know, hopefully we improve
the you know, the roster, and again there's Daves and
I all have high expectations for ourselves. So you know,

(21:27):
we put a lot of pressure on ourselves and our
staffs to reach a certain standard, and that I'll trickle
down to the players and they understand what the standard is.
And there's always going to be pressure in this business.
And every year is new. So again it's this twenty
twenty three team is going to be completely different than
the twenty twenty two team and it's up them, up
to them to you know, create their own team bond
and chemistry and the culture that we're going to have,

(21:47):
and we're doing that right now and if we can
continue to do that and stay healthy again, I just
want to continue to see progress and us continue to
get better, and you know, I'm optimistic about where we
are as a team and the talent that we have.

Speaker 2 (22:00):
Joe, I love the sentiments you had for working with
Brian Dable and knowing him for as long as you had.
The appetite for fans seeing personality out of their coaches
and their.

Speaker 3 (22:09):
Gms, I think is insatiable.

Speaker 2 (22:10):
And you guys have been giving giants fans that specifically
Dable with the cigars, big cigar guy, sunglasses, greening fans.
Is Dable the kind of guy that has like a
Victory cigar collection or does he just grab one and
go like, how does this work? And do you have
anything that you kind of is that you like to
imbibe in after a while.

Speaker 7 (22:30):
Yeah, if cigars were dollars in the amount that he gets,
you know, gets given to him, he'd be he'd be
a very rich man based on the amount of cigars
that he gets or or show up in packages to
his office. So yeah, he enjoys the cigar, the victory
cigar afterwards. Yeah, I'm not a cigar smoker. I'll have
one every now and then, but I end up paying
for it for about the next three weeks. So yeah,

(22:51):
you know, after the game again, just the way we're wired,
I naturally okay, how do we do this again? You know,
what are their injuries? How are we going to next week?
So it's really hard for me to step back and
enjoy it is you know, it's not really I probably
enjoy I need to enjoy it a little bit more
than I do. But you know, it's just natural. You
know that the weeks are so short. In each game,
the magnitude of each game is so big. I literally

(23:13):
sit on the buses and say, Okay, how can we
do this again? What do we need to do next week?
I'm already on to the next one. So I probably
should learn to enjoy those a little bit more because
they're really hard to come by.

Speaker 1 (23:22):
There's a lot of times do enjoy it to come
my friend. Lastly, and thank you for being so generous
with your time.

Speaker 5 (23:26):
Joe.

Speaker 1 (23:27):
It's been a week now since the first round of
the NFL Draft, and let's be honest, in the media,
it has been a seven day gush fest about the
Philadelphia Eagles and Howie and they're so good and Roseman's
going to resign to be president, but he probably have.

Speaker 5 (23:40):
Less power like Roseman is. Just he's gonna line up
super Bowls and the Eagles run beat him. Black up up.
You're gonna play him twice next year, maybe three times again.

Speaker 1 (23:49):
What are your impressions of the early vision of the
twenty twenty three Eagles, your division rival, and how do
you beat these guys?

Speaker 7 (23:56):
Yeah, they they've done a good job this offseason and
you know the moves they you know, the biggest thing
I think is they have their quarterback in place for
the next couple of years. Just having through it a
couple times, whether I was in Buffalo with Josh Allen
or you know here, you know, getting your quarterback in
place and that those contracts aren't easy to get done.
So they were able to do that. Obviously, they have
good offensive weapons, and then they already had a good
defensive line, and then adding a couple guys in the

(24:18):
draft of the defensive line and bringing their corners back,
so again, they're they're going to run it back again again.
I think I think we've made ground, and you know again,
We're just gonna keep our head down. We're going to control,
we control and worry about what we can control inside
this building. And we're gonna come to work every day
and we'll see what happens this fall. But I'm looking
forward to, you know again, facing them twice this year.

Speaker 2 (24:41):
Former Lions new Eagles running back DeAndre Swift spoke.

Speaker 3 (24:44):
To the media yesterday in Philadelphia.

Speaker 2 (24:46):
Swift was asked about running the ball behind the Eagles
offensive line, and he said, the thought of this is
keeping him up at night in a good way.

Speaker 8 (24:55):
That was definitely kind of stayed up last couple of
nights just thinking about it. Like I said, great opportunity
with offensive line, with this coaching staff, with I'm in
a great running back room for some foremost with the
guys that have been here. Like I said, I'm just
excited to get the work each day and be a
piece to the PLOSU.

Speaker 2 (25:15):
DeAndre Swift, another Georgia product of Philadelphia native, though now
back playing for the Eagles. We just talked to Joe Shane.
I'm sure, he's thrilled about the fact that we are
now talking about the Eagles. But as the Giants, GM
just finished up his draft. The Eagles drafted great as
well to add the aforementioned DeAndre Swift as a part
of a trade with the Lions NFL.

Speaker 3 (25:31):
They just got better.

Speaker 2 (25:32):
Within this NFC East rivalry, Mike, Giants Eagles, where do
they stack up?

Speaker 3 (25:37):
Do you think heading into twenty twenty.

Speaker 4 (25:38):
Three the rivalry, I think it's gonna be great. And listen,
the game in East Rutherford got away from the Giants
a little bit. Sakuan was banged up going into that game.
They'd played a lot of close games that season. That
wasn't one of them. The playoff game as well. The
other one was just you know, backups playing for both teams,
or for the Giants or for the eaglescuse me.

Speaker 5 (25:57):
So yeah, I think.

Speaker 4 (25:59):
It's I think it's gonna be I think it's gonna
be heated. I think there's some there's some when we
when Joe Shane hears about the Giants draft like that
gets the juices going in the off season. So this
is something I'm looking.

Speaker 5 (26:09):
Forward to for sure.

Speaker 6 (26:10):
Yeah, of course, it's within the Division Giants Eagles, like
they don't like each other, and like you just mentioned
the games last year to ending with the playoff game.
Right now, the Philadelphia Eagles, they are big brother and
they're looking down on the Giant slide. Yeah, you guys
got better in the draft in this offseason, but yeah
so did we. So they're public expected know's going to
be the same result.

Speaker 5 (26:30):
But the rivalry, I.

Speaker 6 (26:31):
Mean, that's why you tune in and that's why you
watch football.

Speaker 5 (26:33):
It's much different stakes.

Speaker 1 (26:34):
I can't think of the last time we were coming
off a season which the Eagles and Giants both had
playoff wins, not just appearance.

Speaker 5 (26:39):
It's like, these are two very good teams.

Speaker 1 (26:41):
I actually do think if it was interesting what Joe
Shane said about Saquon because he used a couple very
loaded phrases. No matter what line of work you're in,
you're familiar with the phrase circle back, and you probably
get an email dot double circle back.

Speaker 5 (26:52):
We're gonna circle back. It's good. It's not a great phrase.
It's good. It means like we will revisit it soon.

Speaker 1 (26:58):
But it's like when you send an email on Friday
and then Monday you say just circling back on this.
It means you want to get it done, but it's
not probably imminence, he said. What he said the time
for I'm going to talk to him the next couple
of weeks, the next couple of days. Yeah, yeah, all right,
Well then this is coming to some sort of climax.

Speaker 4 (27:12):
I think, why don't you get to this point with
the franchise tag? A lot of times mid July is
really the pressure point because that's the point at which
either you do a deal or you play on a tag.
And I think it's certainly better for Saquon to play
in a long term deal. So we could be here
in mid July, still talking and back circling back in
July along circle. Now we'll see. I mean, I know,
I know both sides would prefer it to be done

(27:33):
a lot sooner than that, but once you have a deadline,
that really pushes things to get done.

Speaker 3 (27:38):
Still circling around each other, he said. It was a
week before the draft. The conversations were ongoing. They were
trying to talk about numbers. It was it was.

Speaker 2 (27:46):
One of the most in this I mean it no insult,
because I think it is how they have to handle
their business with jer managers.

Speaker 3 (27:50):
It was so generic, but it was something.

Speaker 2 (27:53):
It was the conversation happened a week before the draft.

Speaker 3 (27:56):
But we're going to circle back after the draft, and
now that we're.

Speaker 2 (27:58):
Past the draft, I guess it'll like circle back again
in a couple.

Speaker 5 (28:00):
Ex active he said it not too long ago.

Speaker 1 (28:02):
He hadn't talked to the saquon in three weeks, talk
to his reps for and now we're gonna talk to
him in a couple of days. I think one way
or another, I like July. I don't do't think they're
gonna let it go to the July I thinks this
is too important. I think it's too high profile. I
think we'll have closure.

Speaker 5 (28:13):
Brother.

Speaker 4 (28:14):
It's it's a tricky one because this guy was drafted
higher than Joe Shane probably would have drafted him. It's
also the running back position. What's the value of the
running back position. What they've offered him is double what
the top free agents this like Miles Sanders got six
million a year. They've offered him twelve like, so they
already feel like they're at a really good number. It's
just how much do you stretch this thing? And I

(28:34):
look in the end, it's gonna get done. Saquon Barkley
is gonna have a multi year deal. I feel really
with the Giants. Giants, Yeah, I just feel coxcited about that.

Speaker 5 (28:42):
Good. When does it get done? I don't know.

Speaker 4 (28:44):
Again, are we ad mid July talking about this, which
would be fine. We'll have a storyline and guy before
training camp begins.

Speaker 6 (28:49):
That's the tricky part to me though, because when you
say that, once the market opens up and for Saquan
and for Joe Shane and the mark is not as
high as maybe one would have thought for running backs
for the Giants, it's just well, we offered you that,
but it's just like, well, nobody's really making that level
of money. So it was just like, do we can
keep that off on the table and now what we've
seen what's actually out there for you, do we kind
of go a little bit lower because we don't have

(29:10):
to pay you that amount.

Speaker 4 (29:11):
Of money, you know, Daniel Jones one was tricky. There
were times where it got I don't want to say contentious,
but the sides really butted ahead. So there's a little
bit of that right now. But Joe Shane and company,
Kevin Abramson's been doing their contracts for you. However, I
think they get something I love.

Speaker 2 (29:27):
Here to tell us more about the International Player Pathway
Program is of course our NFL networkfront office analyst, Scott Pioli.

Speaker 3 (29:33):
Scott, how are you doing this morning?

Speaker 2 (29:36):
There is such a long process for these players, hey,
to get to this point.

Speaker 3 (29:40):
So tell us about the process.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Start from the beginning, because you see a lot of names,
let's say from Nigeria on that list. How are these
guys found and how do they get placed?

Speaker 4 (29:50):
Jamie?

Speaker 9 (29:50):
The starting point for the International Player Pathway program begins
with the international scouts that the league offers employees. And
this group of people is spread out in different countries
and different continents. And what they do is they gather
names and players, not just people that have played football,
people who have never played football, who send videos, who
maybe are playing other sports rugby, Australian rules football. Those

(30:13):
names are gathered, They collect film, they start doing work.
They do in person visits, they do a lot of
video work. Then the next level, after the scouts goes
the work goes to Will Brice and James Cook who
worked for NFL UK. They do an amazing job because
not only do they filter out the players and get
the next level of players to the next group, but

(30:36):
they have so many logistical things that they have to
go through and a ton of travel and time away
from their family.

Speaker 5 (30:41):
When they're done with that.

Speaker 9 (30:42):
There's a group of scouts old scouts, starting with former
NFL executive Dick Daniels, former NFL player, with Charles Bentley,
myself and Mark Ross, another former NFL executive. We watch tape,
we see film on these players. We then make a
decision of who we're going to invite to the Combine
in London the last two years and in Germany before

(31:04):
that we have a combine. We then select a group
of players that we will work out at IMG Academy.
They spend three months their training and that is the
beginning of the beginning for.

Speaker 6 (31:14):
Them, the beginning of the beginning. I loved a Scott
and you just mentioned that the International Player Pathway program
in London and then the Combine and Germany. You've been
at both of those. Can you just tell everybody what
that experience is like for the players when they take
part in it.

Speaker 9 (31:30):
You know, it's interesting, Jason, because as we know, players
react differently to different situations. The one overwhelming feeling that
you see and sense from those players is this feeling
of gratitude. You have to remember, this is a group
of people who have never been paid to play football.

Speaker 5 (31:46):
They've always had to dole out cash. So when they come.

Speaker 9 (31:49):
There, they had this immense feeling of gratitude for everybody
involved with the program.

Speaker 5 (31:54):
But what we see is a lot of different reactions.

Speaker 9 (31:58):
Some people are incredibly nervous, they have no idea what
to do and they're asking a lot of questions. Others
show up with a great deal of confidence and athletic
ability because generally speaking, the players who have played other
sports before, some of the rugby players, some of the
Australian rules football players, they have a degree of confidence
because they've been on a stage before. They know what

(32:20):
it's like to be with players. One of the interesting
things that we run into every year, though, is the food.

Speaker 5 (32:26):
You talk about the player experience.

Speaker 9 (32:28):
You've got so many different players from so many different
countries and they actually don't know what to eat, and
they get food sometimes that they have absolutely no idea
what it is, they don't want to touch it, and
we have to force them to eat sometimes because they're
struggling what's on their diet.

Speaker 4 (32:45):
Wow, sounds like me every night at the dinner table
with my kids.

Speaker 5 (32:49):
Scott.

Speaker 4 (32:49):
If you can help me with that, I'd appreciate it.
The eight allocated players this season of the most since
the program's inception. Great to see how the programs involving.
What does the future look like for the International Player
Pathway program?

Speaker 9 (33:02):
Well, you know, geez, I think right now is momentum
and what's happening with the program right now because the
game is changing internationally and there's so much flag football
and other opportunities to play. What we're seeing with the
momentum of the game is younger players coming into the game.
Even players that have had an experience with flag football
know the game better, They know how to play the game,

(33:23):
they have certain skills. So as we're watching the future
of the game, we've realized at the league office level
that we have to start looking at players at younger ages.
For the last several years, many of the players that
we've looked at have been older players, many in their
mid to late twenties, so the developmental time isn't that
strong or isn't that long for them. But in this

(33:44):
last season there were actually three hundred and nineteen international
players playing in the NCAA.

Speaker 5 (33:50):
We've recognized that.

Speaker 9 (33:51):
We know that, so what we've got to start doing
is using places like our nfl UK Academy. We have
a new academy down in Africa that OCU Minor is
running and finding players, identifying the talent and starting to
train them a little bit earlier so maybe we have
a relationship with them before they actually go to college,

(34:11):
but also understanding and giving back to the teaching of
the international community. So once again, the game is evolving
around the country, so we as a league have to
understand that our players are going to be coming to
us at a different age. It's a really exciting time
and there's a ton of momentum internationally. I think next
week is the week we're going to be finding out
the schedule of the five games that are being played

(34:32):
in Europe next year.
