Speaker 1 (00:06):
Welcome inside with the insiders alongside Ian rapaport A fresh
off the golf course, Mike Garafalo. I am Tom Pelisera.
We got a packed show for you. Training camps they
are kicking off. Dwight Fredy the Hall of Fame induction
that's still a couple of weeks away, but he is
going to be here join us on the show, talk
about this year's colts, as well as what he's got

(00:28):
planned for his speech today though, we just start to
do a couple of the teams. There's eight teams across
the NFL whose rookies reported to work. That list also
including teams like the Bills and the Dolphins. We will
talk about them in just a little bit here, also
including the Bears, who on the day that their rookies
reported that they handled just a little bit of business. First,
overall draft pick Caleb Williams agreeing to terms on his

(00:52):
new contract. It is a fully guaranteed four year deal
with a fifth year option. Ro Madonsa, also the number
nine overall pick, He officially signed his contract. Ro Madoonsay
also in the fold, on a fully four year, fully
guaranteed contract with that fifth year option. Yo's looking for

(01:12):
a contract to sign at some point here that'll be
Brandon Ayuk, who right now is entering the fifth year
option on his original rookie deal. Today he did something,
according to Mike, that a lot of people have been
waiting for, which is officially request a trade from the
San Francisco forty nine Ers. Now, if you think maybe
this all sounds familiar, it's because the last two offseasons,

(01:34):
Deebo Samuel did not show up for a good joke
of the offseason. He eventually got a deal right before
the start of September. Nick Bosa held out or in
from everything, and then what do you know about four
days before the season began, nick Bosa also got a contract.
So Mike who pulled over his golf cart on the
fifteenth hole to deliver us that news this.

Speaker 2 (01:53):
Morning, I give the floor to you.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
How does this play out from here for the forty
nine ers and Brandon Ayuk and if anything changes with
today's trade request.

Speaker 3 (02:03):
Tom, we talked about this all off season, and there
had been talk about him requesting a trade, and I
made it clear at every stop along the way there
was no formal trade requests from Brandon. Aok now was
he aware that other teams would be interested in trading
for him if the forty nine Ers actually opened the
gates and let it happen. Yes, was he stoking the
fire by talking to his buddy Jaden Daniels on FaceTime

(02:27):
and then putting it on his social media, Yes, but
there was no official trade request until today, and the
reason for it, from my understanding is the forty nine
Ers did make a run at an extension for Ayuke,
but it was below what some of these other guys
have been getting. And I'm not even talking about the
Justin Jeffersons. I'm talking about the Jalen Waddles, the Devonte Smiths,
and Ayuk wanted to at least be in line with them.

Speaker 2 (02:50):
It was not in line with them. And this was
back a couple of months ago.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
Now you remember there was a recent conversation between the
sides in which I'm told both sides got some things
off their chest to perhaps reset the table for another
run at negotiations. Well, that didn't happen, and the Niners
haven't made an offer from my understanding, according to sources,
until since.

Speaker 2 (03:11):
May excuse me.

Speaker 3 (03:12):
And so Ayok at this point, with training camp about
to start feeling frustrated, says, you know what I want
to trade. Then we had plenty of time to get
something done. We're not getting it done. So here we
are formally a trade request from Brandon Ayuk. We shall
see if the Niners honor that. Like you mentioned, they've
had these situations before and felt like they've been able
to manage them to the point of getting something done
in the end.

Speaker 4 (03:33):
Well, at his position group that had a very similar situation,
Deebo Samuel very publicly requested a trade, was not happy.

Speaker 2 (03:40):
Then, I would say right.

Speaker 4 (03:41):
Before the season started, I think was in the middle
of training camp. Ended up getting a deal on Nick Bosa,
no trade request, but did get a deal before the season. Look,
it's hard for me to imagine absence some crazy situation
or someone offering them a premium first round pick. Hard
to imagine the forty nine ers actually trade Brandon Ayuk,
mainly because they're a very good team and rarely do

(04:04):
very good teams trade very good players right before a
season where they're trying to reach the Super Bowl and
win it. But if Brandon Naneuk wanted to let the
forty nine Ers know that all is not well, he
is very upset. There's a lot of discontent. A trade
request is a great way to say it.

Speaker 2 (04:20):
Now.

Speaker 4 (04:20):
You mentioned the receiver market and kind of where it
lays out, it's actually really well defined. You would think
that he'd make more than some of those guys you mentioned.
Would wonder maybe he'd get kind of like right under
where Aman Ross Saint Browns, which is twenty eight million
dollars per year over the first three years. There is
a sweet spot for a potential deal. But very clearly

(04:41):
Brandon Niyuk is not thrilled with the way things are
going and did one of the couple things that he
can do. Next question, of course, would be does he
stay away from training him?

Speaker 2 (04:50):
How upset is he? We will find out. We got
one more week.

Speaker 1 (04:54):
The forty nine ers report next Tuesday, along with a
lot of other teams around the NFL supporting that same day,
the New York Giants who enter this training camp with
some quarterback questions. Of course, Daniel Jones got his contract
last March. You're one of that arrangement didn't exactly go
the way that anybody had planned, culminating with Daniel Jones
suffering a torn acl well, he spoke with reporters to

(05:16):
give an update, and if you listen to Daniel Jones,
certainly sounds like things from a health perspective trending in
the right direction.

Speaker 5 (05:23):
You know, I've had a pretty smooth process, no real
setbacks or issues with it, which you have been fortunate
with that. So it's been good. And at this point
I'm doing pretty much pretty much everything, running cotton, everything
I need do.

Speaker 1 (05:37):
Now we all know that there's a difference between I'm
doing everything I'm running and cutting on a field with
the athletic trainer by myself and actually getting out there,
whether that's seven on seven, eleven on eleven, whatever it is.
Daniel Jones did some of that ian to the course
of the offseason, he was not yet ready for eleven
on eleven. What are your expectations of how the Giants
will ramp him up and whether Daniel Jones will be

(05:57):
one fully cleared come week one.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
My understanding is that Daniel Jones will begin training camp active,
not expected to be on the pup list, not expected
to be on any list, expected to be healthy and
ready to go, and for the Giants, for Giants fans,
this really is all you want, This really is what
you've kind of been waiting for. It is a long
road for a quarterback with any significant injury, certainly a

(06:21):
long road with an ACL. He's then everything and more
that he has needed to do. Sounds like he is
in very good shape, in good mindset, ready for this season.
The fact that he is not expected to be on
the pup list means there's really going to be no
limitations for Daniel Jones with this rebuilt offensive line, with
this rebuilt receiver room. And I know a ton of
optimism that not just Mo League Nahbers, Wando Robinson another

(06:44):
one who I know has really impressed the Giants in
the offseason. A lot of positivity now for Daniel Jones
as he heads into what is a crucial, crucial year
for him.

Speaker 3 (06:53):
And I would say David Jones deserves a lot of
credit for getting to this point. Maybe the average fan
doesn't realize how much work he puts in period, but
certainly with this rehab, in the early part of the
rehab process, before he could put weight on his leg,
he was sitting on a chair on the field throwing
so that he could just be out there and just get.

Speaker 2 (07:12):
Some work in.

Speaker 3 (07:13):
This was way back in the winter time, he was
out there on the field at the Giants facility getting
that work in. So he attacked his rehab from the
beginning and that helped him get to this point. Now,
you're righty, and I mean, this is an acl and
it's something where you always hear it takes about at
least a calendar year for you to start to feel normal.
So once you get into the season, will he be
that same threat with his legs that he has been

(07:35):
in the past. I've covered games involving the Giants where
the opposing defense was worried sometimes more about Daniel Jones
legs and his rushing attack than say, Kwon Barkley, just
because of the unpredictability of the quarterback keeping the ball
sometimes on some of those keepers. So will that element
be there week one at one hundred percent, Probably not,
But they are comfortable with where he is and he

(07:56):
will be able to protect himself and also escape when
he has to.

Speaker 1 (08:00):
Mike, thanks for being here and for giving us something
to talk about. At the top of this show, Ian
stick Around will be right back with you. Mentioned earlier.
The Chiefs back at training camp, So is their head coach,
big Red himself? Andy Reid year twelve with the Chiefs
year twelve at Saint Joseph, Missouri. For camp, you'd always
going to have early morning practices. They will be hard

(08:20):
hitting practices. As he goes for the fourth Super Bowl,
Doctor Mahomes spoke with the Porters as he arrived at
camp as well.

Speaker 6 (08:28):
Even though he won the Super Bowl last year, we
felt like we didn't play our best football, especially offensively.
So it's our goal to be better that way. And
we had come up with that mentality every single day.
Even to another extreme, like when you don't win it,
it just it sucks even more because you experienced the
off season of being able to say you're the champ,
and you experience all the different things and activities you're
able to do because you're a super Bowl champion, and

(08:50):
you experienced a feeling of just winning the Super Bowl.
And so for us, I'll speak for myself, I mean,
when you don't win it now, it sucks because you
know what it could be like if you already go
out there and win it.

Speaker 7 (09:01):
We had our ups and downs. I just expect the
young guys that were here last year to continue to
build on what they've finished with. I thought we finished
strong on both sides of the ball and special teams.
It's important that you and we had a nice offseason
where we were practice some of the kickoff kickoff return stuff,
and so let's pick up where we left off and

(09:25):
get better.

Speaker 1 (09:26):
Welcoming in Steve White's here at the news desk in
Los Angeles. Steve, you heard Andy Reid talking about the
young players. In my mind, all this goes back to
the Tyreek Hill trade two years ago. Yes, where everybody's going,
How in the world are the Chiefs going to replace
one of the most dynamic players in the game. What
they were not taking into account was the Chiefs looked
at this as we're freeing up tons of cap space,
we're also adding a whole bunch of draft picks to

(09:48):
fill out the roster. Those are now some of those
young guys who they're hoping and anticipating are going to
develop into the difference makers as they go forward, and.

Speaker 2 (09:55):
Some of them have already gotten themselves.

Speaker 8 (09:57):
There a guy like Trent mcduffey, you guy like George
car laugh as you look at the draft class of
twenty twenty two. First off, they've known nothing but winning
Super Bowls, right, So you hear Andy Reid talk about
those young guys continuing.

Speaker 2 (10:08):
To develop and Patrick Mahomes talking about some.

Speaker 8 (10:10):
Of these guys continuing to get better. That's what they're
able to do. But now you look at the crux
of their defense, and let's make no mistake about it.
As great as Patrick Mahomes is, it was their defense
that got them to the Super Bowl. On a class
of twenty twenty two, Trent McDuffie, George car laftis, you've
got a safety, Brian Cook, the linebacker Leo'shanal. You know,
you've got so many players, especially in that secondary. Even

(10:33):
though they lose lugarious need, that's where McDuffie can move over.
And they've got some players tom who can slide in,
who've been rotational players over the past two years.

Speaker 2 (10:41):
So the fact that they've.

Speaker 8 (10:42):
Got this type of youth, you're not looking at any
rookies coming in and really making a heavy impact this
year because of the young depth and frontline talent they
have on the team. That's where Kansas City has struck
gold and if any team can hit it like they
did in twenty twenty two, they're going to position themselves
to have the success similar with the chief have had.

Speaker 1 (11:01):
Patrick Maholmes also, I believe, had something to say about
Chris Jones earlier today. Ah, and there it is on
social Chris Jones say he's ready for training camp. Patri
ma Holmes, you won't come tuesday. Chris Jones has made
a habit of, you know, having different types of different
types of approaches. He said earlier he wanted to not
have he didn't want to have the full training camp boat.

(11:23):
As we welcome, be in rapport back into the conversation here, Ian.
They finally got the deal done with Chris Jones. That
was one of the huge, huge question marks of course
going into the offseason. One of the top defensive players
in the game is back, and they're hope and even
though he's now been paid top dollar again, they're going
to find a motivated Chris Jones to try to help
on this repeat run.

Speaker 2 (11:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (11:43):
I don't think there's any issue with Chris Jones being
motivated to play. But I'm laughing a little bit because
Chris Jones really kind of created a problem for everyone
right because stayed away from training camp obviously very publicly
was not there on time. Stayed away, Remember he was
in the box with his aid. It was the whole thing.
And then all he did was show up and just
be awesome. And so like, Chris Jones is sort of

(12:04):
joking here about not showing up the training camp, but
he really did show the Chiefs. And I think there's
probably a lot of other veteran defensive linemen, our pass
rushers or corners or whoever, being like, all right, if
I don't have to do training camp full go, maybe
that's actually better. And so Chris Jones is joking, but
he's not actually totally joking, And you know, somewhere, some

(12:24):
way he's going to make sure that the Chiefs know, like, look,
I did all this last year without being here one
hundred percent of the time. No contract issues for him
still though, and the fact that for once we are
not going to be talking about what he's going to
get paid. His contract is now just set. I think
that is a very very big positive for the Chiefs.

Speaker 8 (12:42):
If you think Steve Spagnolo is going to put stone
cold Jones out there for one hundred percent of the
practice snaps and things like that, like no, no, no,
we need him at the end of the season because
that's worked because the one thing that Chris Jones did
that really helped out their defensive line. He played on
the interior but sometimes lined up on the edge. They
did a fantastic job of finding ways to single him up.

(13:02):
That is a hard thing to do when everyone knows
you want to double team him.

Speaker 2 (13:06):
Remember in the Super Bowl when.

Speaker 8 (13:07):
The forty nine ers forgot to find him, They're late
on the drive and had to set up for a
field goal at the very end of the game instead
of the touchdown. Because Chris Jones was able to do
what is he was able to do, that's an allowed
guy like George car Laftis to go ahead and get
ten and a half sacks last year. And now Charles
Amene who when he comes back from that injury, that's
just another veteran edge rusher that they're going to add
to that front line that's going to be able to

(13:30):
help that young secondary that we were just talking about.

Speaker 1 (13:32):
To be clear, Patrick Mahomes, the quarterbacks arrive early for
su radically and the Chiefs with the rookies, Chris Jones
not actually required to be there until Saturday. Why Saturday, Well,
because the Chiefs and the Ravens get these slightly early
reporting date because we are fifty one days away from
the start of the regular season.

Speaker 2 (13:50):
Before that, we're.

Speaker 1 (13:51):
Barely a week away from one of the big events
right here on NFL Network. That's right, Welcome back football.
Back Together Weekend is back celebrate while watching teams across
the league take the field for training camp. It is
Back Together Weekend presented by YouTube TV. Catch the action
on NFL Network, NFL Plus, ABC at ESPN, but a
NFL dot Com slash Back Together Weekend for more information.

(14:13):
Subscription is required for NFL Plus. Here heard me to
say it, We're fifty one days away. Now, slightly more
days than that till we see the Colts on the field,
but fifty one days away from regular season football. Quinnie Pey,
could he become the next one of this guy? Well,
there's not a whole lot of Dwight Freeny out there
in the world. That's why that guy is ending up

(14:34):
in Canton. First, he comes here and joins us on
the inside of Dwight Freedie, the Sackmaster. Next, one of
the greatest pass rushers of all time, seven time Pro
Bowl defensive end now headed to the Pro Football Hall
of Fame's eighteen short days away. It is Dwight Freeney,

(14:57):
the NFL and longtime Colt Sledging who joins us right
now here on the Insiders, Ton Pilla Cero, Steve White.
You at a front row seat for that magical moment, Dwight,
congratulations once again eighteen days here. How's the speech come in?
Do you have the butterflies building? Like? How are you
feeling right now about taking that stage?

Speaker 9 (15:16):
You know, it's funny, you know, you try to prepare.
It's like a game, right, you know, you prepare, you prepare, prepare,
and I'm hoping and praying all my preparation it turns
out to being a good thing and I'll be ready.
You know, I know I can't prepare for the actual motion.
You know, you could do all the reading of the speech.
What every guy I talk to is completely different when

(15:37):
you stand out there. So I'm excited. I'm excited to
get this thing going and uh and then moving on
to the next chapter.

Speaker 8 (15:46):
You chose Colts owner Jim Mercey to present you in Canayeah.

Speaker 9 (15:50):
Why did you choose Jim? Well, I think it all
starts with Jim Man. You know, Jim is the horseshoe,
his family you know, created that whole situation organization now,
and I know it means a lot to Jim, you know,
and he would do anything cross players, and we would
do anything for Jim, and I know how much it
would mean to him, and that's why I decided to
pick him.

Speaker 1 (16:11):
Dwight, you look right now, and I'm only seeing you
from here up, but you sure look like you could
probably get out there still Russia passer or two.

Speaker 2 (16:19):
Let's time you played.

Speaker 1 (16:19):
You had three sacks and a four game stretch with
the Seahawks. You you suit up right now and they say,
go play a seventeen game season maybe just you know,
DPR type stuff, twenty snaps a game. How many sacks
are you getting in a full eighteen or seventeen game season.

Speaker 9 (16:33):
Well, I don't know about seventeen eighteen games. I'll probably
give you seventeen eighteen snaps for the whole entire year.
I'll try to get you one or two sacks. That's
about it. You know, you know what the game.

Speaker 2 (16:47):
I love the game.

Speaker 9 (16:48):
I mean, I wish I could still play forever, honestly.
That's that's one thing that you know I will always miss.
Hence why I played so long as I just couldn't
get enough of the game of football.

Speaker 2 (17:00):
And what it takes to go out there and play
and compete.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
Man.

Speaker 9 (17:02):
So you know, in my mind, hey, maybe I think
I could play the entire season. My body's a whole
different story.

Speaker 2 (17:09):
Hey, Dry, We.

Speaker 8 (17:10):
Know the Colts have been trying to replicate what you
and Robert Mathis did when you guys are working as
tandem there, so.

Speaker 2 (17:15):
This should have go on the draft.

Speaker 8 (17:16):
The rookie Latu Latu, I don't know how much you've
seen of him, but what you know, what do you
think he can bring with some of the pieces they
put on their defensive front?

Speaker 2 (17:25):
This bad over the past couple of years.

Speaker 9 (17:27):
You know, I think he has size and he has mobility.
He's not the fastest guy, but he does perform moves.
So when I sit there and watch him and I
watch tape on him, I see him effectively using.

Speaker 2 (17:40):
His hands, using his leverage.

Speaker 9 (17:42):
And when you're a younger guy, you know, sometimes it
doesn't develop until later into your NFL career. Sometimes you
just use strict athleticism. But when you watch him at
UCLA and how he likes to us his hands and
just uses this straight out, just you know ability just
to make play. You know, it's it's going to be
something interesting, you know. I hope they you know how

(18:04):
to use him the right way and put in those
positions because he can.

Speaker 2 (18:07):
Move around to different spots as well.

Speaker 9 (18:09):
He's just not a guy who just stays on the
right side like me.

Speaker 2 (18:12):
I'm on the right side and you know exactly.

Speaker 9 (18:13):
Where I am. A guy like him, he can move inside,
he can go to the other side. So it's going
to be a challenge for you know, offenses out there
to figure out how to stop him.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
If he can.

Speaker 9 (18:23):
Continues to growth and continues to build on whatever.

Speaker 1 (18:27):
He has, may well, a lot of people could probably
mistake the Colts current quarterback for a pass rusher when
he got a six five, two hundred and forty five
pound dude like Anthony Richardson. Obviously he got banged up,
had several injuries for the course the last season.

Speaker 2 (18:40):
But what have you seen so far from him?

Speaker 1 (18:42):
And thinking back to your days, is there anybody you
would compare him to in terms of the challenges of
getting that guy on the ground.

Speaker 9 (18:50):
Man, he should be playing defensive end and I tell you,
I mean, you know, but he does a great job
and I was very surprised by his toys, you know,
And I think that was the biggest thing. You know,
when you're a rookie, sometimes you get out there and
it's like, you know, I could deer in headlights.

Speaker 2 (19:07):
You don't know what to do.

Speaker 9 (19:09):
You just run just because you can to run, and
you lean on that. The games that I saw him play,
he staid in the pocket, he made the right throws,
and when he had to run, he was affected.

Speaker 2 (19:19):
The only thing I would say is get down a
little bit sooner.

Speaker 9 (19:25):
These guys are out there trying to hit you. Hit
your hard, and you know you're one of the faces
of the franchise and we need you for all the
entire season, not just for a few games.

Speaker 2 (19:35):
So take that into account as.

Speaker 9 (19:37):
You run thirty yards down the field, pass the lineback
or a corner or something like that.

Speaker 8 (19:43):
We started this off when Tony Jonesy broke the news
to you that you were going to be inducted into
the Pro Football Hall of Fame. You were Grove twenty three,
Michael Jordan's golf course. We know you can't get off
the golf course, So I'm going to ask our guys
to show this tape of you at the Invited Celebrities
Classic down in Dallas and evaluate what you you are
about to see.

Speaker 9 (20:01):
Okay, here we go. Oh well, let's see. I'm right there.
I'm playing a fan. I'm playing a fan, and I'm
swinging hard, all right now. That's That's the one thing
about my golf swing is I learned how to play
one way, and I taught myself. I really literally, if

(20:23):
I'm going to make a mistake, I'm going to make
a mistake doing it one hundred miles per hour, very
similar to football, and it's probably why I'm not as
good as I want to be in golf.

Speaker 2 (20:33):
But I'm gonna have a good time doing it.

Speaker 9 (20:35):
I'm definitely going to have.

Speaker 2 (20:36):
A good time doing it.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
See day that reminds me of my swing in terms
of just it's all power. It's not necessarily form. Just
swinging as hard as I can. I can't get out
of bed the next morning if I play eight holes
because I swing like that. Your baby can't handle football
on your body, Eddiemore, can you handle this?

Speaker 2 (20:52):
Man? Listen? It's tall.

Speaker 9 (20:53):
And you know what it's funny is that I actually
there's been times where I'm swinging that golf club. I'm like, man,
I probably should slow it down a little bit, you know,
I felt a little tweaking my shoulder a little. But
the thing is, I'm just I just can't stop. I
just cannot stop swimming hard. And every time I do,
it's a d sell. If you know anything about golf,
I decell and I can't find the ball. So I

(21:16):
just go out and say, you know what, I'm gonna
make this mistake one hundred miles per hour. I can
go out and mess it up. By all I know
is I gave it one hundred percent effort, all right,
And that's it.

Speaker 1 (21:25):
Dwight, Thanks a lot for the time, man, enjoy these
next eighteen days. Don't let all that anxiety build up
too much on you. You got it. Just make sure
you're building building a little bit of cry time into
the time of speech, and.

Speaker 2 (21:36):
I'll see you can man, all right, man, I'll see
you you guys. Take care, boy, Freeny.

Speaker 1 (21:41):
One of the best packed weekend at the Pro Football
Hall of Fame week and you'll be able to catch
a lot of it right here on NFL Network, including
the first game of the preseason, Steve sixteen days away,
an out of Football Hall of Fame game is the
Texans versus the Bears. We'll have pregame, postgame covered, and
then of course the enshrinement starting at noon on NFL Network.

Speaker 2 (22:07):
Forty nine Ers report.

Speaker 1 (22:08):
In full of training camp one week from the day.
We don't yet know if Brandon Ayuk will be there
in light of his trade request. Ricky Pearsall and the
rookies did report today. Piersol not ready to practice just yet.
Well have details after this on the inside. Mike Herrifula

(22:28):
brought you the news first earlier today, Brandon Ayuk, after
a month's long standoff, officially requesting a trade from the
forty nine Ers. San Francisco's position all along has been
they are not going to trade them. They expect Ayuk
to be a part of the team in twenty twenty four.
We'll see what, if any impact there actually is of
that trade request. For now, we know there's one week

(22:51):
to go until the veterans for the forty nine ers report.
The rookies reported today and another wide receiver the latest
won the first round pick, Ricky Pearsall landing on the
active non football injury list. That is a list that
you can come off of at any time. My understanding
is this is not believed to be anything major for
Ricky Piersall, but one more bit of wide receiver drama.

(23:12):
Why not for a team that's had it pretty consistently
over the past several years. Welcome back to the Insiders.
I'm Tom Peliicero. That's Ian rapport this right here. Bridget
Condon now joining the show. Bridget, appreciate you being here.
You've been around that team quite a bit with the
forty nine ers. You talk to people Ricky Parson winning
gets on the field, which it sounds like will be
in the relatively near future. What do they think that
they're getting with it?

Speaker 10 (23:33):
Well, they put a lot of value into this guy, right,
drafting him with the thirty first overall pick in the
NFL Draft.

Speaker 11 (23:38):
What's funny, Tomas.

Speaker 10 (23:39):
He was teammates with Brandon Aiyuke back in twenty nineteen
when they were together in college, and now he could
be the guy that replaces Brandon Aiyuke if the forty
nine ers do agree to that trade request. He also
is a deep threat just like Ayuk, and he's a
guy that's turned heads during Mini camp, especially to his
teammates and coaches Kyle Shanahan saying that Brock perty doesn't

(23:59):
always get to see the way that a route is ran,
but he knows if the guy's in the right position
at the end of it and catches the ball, that
means he did the right thing. And that's how you
build chemistry and connection with a quarterback early as a receiver.
And Kyle Shanahan said that he already feels that that
early on in Mini Caamp. So remember he got a
lot of extra reps during Mini Caamp because Brendan Ayuk

(24:20):
of course was not there dealing with contract negotiations. And
if that's the case during training camp, the way that
he is building that connection with Brock Purty is only
going to continue to elevate and he could be that
number one.

Speaker 11 (24:32):
Guy come this season. Of course, they have a lot
of options for that.

Speaker 4 (24:35):
Well, if there is a hold out, it does get
pretty interesting. And obviously for Brandon Ayuk, the most important
thing take care of the business side, take care of yourself,
make sure that whatever you're doing you were getting the
money you deserve. But if he is not there, it
certainly does open opportunity for someone like Ricky Pearsow to
step in and at least make an argument for snaps.
And this draft pick, to me is one of the

(24:55):
more fascinating of all of the draft picks. Is obviously
everyone knows about the drama going on with the Ford
nine Ers receivers, and there has been drama or whatever
you want to call it the last several years. From me,
Deebo Samuel, trade request and contract extension, Brandon Ayuk was
kind of in the doghouse, then became a star, and
now is back in the situation he's in trying to
get a new contract, and then they go ahead and

(25:16):
draft a receiver in the first round, a sign that
we know the NFL is a business. Obviously we cover
the business side so much now, but this was a
pretty business forward decision to let all the other receivers
in the room know, like, look, someone else is there
and someone else's coming and watching how well that unfolds
is going to be fascinating, fascinating to see in this

(25:39):
forty nine Ers offense.

Speaker 1 (25:40):
Ricky Piersol was a surprise first round pick. There's a
lot of people in the league that liked him, but
bottom of the first round was rich for a lot
of people. There's one position the Kyle Shanahan knows besides
quarterback in terms of scouting him, it's probably wide receiver. Meanwhile,
flip side and we know another big change for this
defense this year. Another new coordinator who's a name that
you've heard is standing out and can make an impact

(26:01):
on this Sandwanchisco DA twenty twenty four.

Speaker 10 (26:02):
Leonard Floyd is going to need to stand out. This
forty nine Ers defense we know has been dominant as
of late. It's one that they pride themselves on. But
four of six guys on defense left that had three
or more sacks. So you have Nick Bosa. Everybody knows
what Nick Bosa can do. Right, Teams are going to
put a lot of attention into Nick Bosa, but they
might find themselves in trouble if they don't pay attention

(26:24):
to the guy lining up opposite him, which is Leonard
of Floyd. He's coming from the Bills and he had
a career high ten and a half sacks.

Speaker 11 (26:31):
Last season with the Bills.

Speaker 10 (26:33):
Right, this is a guy that Kyle Shanahan feels like
can make an immediate impact with this forty nine Ers defense, and.

Speaker 11 (26:38):
He knows the NFC West really well.

Speaker 10 (26:40):
Remember He was with the Rams for three seasons from
twenty twenty to twenty twenty two. He had twenty nine
sacks over that span of three seasons, and Shanahan.

Speaker 11 (26:48):
Said, I was sick of playing against him.

Speaker 10 (26:51):
He's happy that he's on his team. He believes he's
a guy that can really impact and be what this
forty nine Ers defense wants to continue being.

Speaker 1 (26:59):
They heard Steve Wilks last year they go to the
Super Bowl, make a change of the defensive coordinator spot,
this time going within it's Nick Sorenson promoted decordinator. Brandon
Staley also now on that staff. Will be interested to
see how the philosophy may change and obviously some personnel
changes as well. Bridget thank you to stick around, E
and you as well. You know why we had a
lot to talk about. Because football is back. Celebrate by

(27:22):

training camp Back Together Weekend presented by YouTube TV. Catch
the action on NFL Network, NFL Plus, ABC, and ESPN.
Go to NFL dot com Slash Back Together Weekend for
more information. Subscription required for NFL Plus. There was that
cluster of wide receivers take at the end of the

(27:43):
first round into the second round. Ricky Piersoll was among them.
So was that guy Keon Coleman. He's already flashed at
the microphone. We'll leave flash on the field. The Bills
are going to need him to in the post Stefan
Diggs Era, let's talk about Buffalo and Josh Allen's pass
catchers right after this on The Insiders, Happy seven to one,

(28:09):
sixth day from the Buffalo Bills. Yes, that is the
area code in the Greater Buffalo Niagara Falls area. Will
it be a happy nine to eight day the day
of their opener against the Arizona Cardinal. See what I
did there, Steve, very nice wind in the whole thing together,
we'll go in that transition that is TV professionalist and
welcome back to The Insiders, Steve Witch. I am Tom Pelvisero.
Obviously the biggest story throughout the course the Bills offseason.

(28:31):
It's a lot of veteran attrition, but none bigger than
Stefan Diggs getting traded to the Houston Texans. They draft
a guy in Keon Coleman, who we've heard a lot from,
even if people may not have heard a lot about
prior to the draft. They liked him enough to move
back into the second round to take him up at
the top of that. How do you see Keon Coleman
on the field making an impact for the Bills in

(28:53):
twenty four.

Speaker 8 (28:53):
Well, Tom, He's going to have to be on the
field making an impact because it wasn't just a Fon Diggs,
that guy rid of gab Davis. Those are the two
leading receivers the past couple of years, and the big
question going into training camp is do the Bills have
enough wide receiver support four quarterback Josh Allen and Keon Coleman.
He is a six to three, two hundred and fifteen
pound target. Now he ran a four to six at
the combine, so people are talking about his speed, but

(29:16):
you look at his production at Michigan State and at
Florida State, not only as a receiver, Tom, but as.

Speaker 2 (29:21):
A punt returner.

Speaker 8 (29:22):
He's one of those guys who probably plays faster than
what that forty'clock showed. They're going to need that because
this might be a more tight end driven offense, much
like we've seen nowt the Baltimore Ravens with Dawson Knox
and Dalton Kincaid. Just because other than Keon Coleman. You've
got Khalil Shikuur Curtis, Samuel Marquis, Veldas, Gantlon mac Hollins.
I mean, these are the threats that Josh Allen's going

(29:45):
to be throwing to because of the organizational decision to
get younger on the receiving perimeter.

Speaker 1 (29:49):
The entire Keyon Coleman story just fascinates me, even before
the whole Macy's thing and everything else they did in
the press carts, because this is the guy who comes
from Michigan State. He walked down with playing bass skit
ball for Tom Izzo. He wasn't even fully training for
football till a year and a half ago. Still, in
twenty twenty two, was the leading receiver for the Spartans,
ahead of a guy named Jayden Reid who came out
and had a pretty good impact for the Packers in

(30:11):
year one. Okay, flip side of the ball. They also
lost some guys on the back end of that defense.
Your veterans in the secondary, this is a completely remade
type of unit.

Speaker 2 (30:20):
Here.

Speaker 1 (30:20):
We had a guy named Cole bishop On prior to
the draft. Give me an idea, he's their second round pick.
What they hope he can be as a rookie.

Speaker 8 (30:28):
So he's a versatile safety and that's what they have
to figure out because they could be losing both of
their safety if you know, Jordan Poyter is down in
Miami and Micah Hyde, who is a standout free safety,
is contemplating retirement if he doesn't return to Buffalo. A
Cole Bishop is somebody you know, as head coach Whittingham
said that he's got the big speed, he's a big hitter,
and he's in one of these guys who's always in

(30:48):
the right place so instinctively. He can play close to
the line of scrimmage, he can play off the ball
as a free safety. We're seeing him doing a lot
of things here blitzing and making a lot of TFLs.

Speaker 2 (30:57):
At Utah.

Speaker 8 (30:58):
They've got a guy in Taylor Rapp though, who does
that in Buffalo. So again, this is where Cole Bishop,
the second round pick, is going to have to show
his versatility. But safety overall and Tom's secondary depth that
is a significant concern. Even though they have some decent
starting corners. You remember they lost your Davius White is
now with the La Rams.

Speaker 2 (31:17):
Steve, thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (31:18):
I talk to you again soon here elsewhere in the
AFC East, The Dolphins rookies also reported to training camp
as we look ahead and some of the upcoming practices
for the Dolphins yesterday. Like most teams, have the full
squad reporting next week as we count down these final
fifty one days to the regular season. One of the
things to sort out between now and then the reporting

(31:41):
date for the Miami Dolphins, of course, is whether or
not they can get a deal done with Tua Tongua,
Bi Lois and welcome back Ian rapport Tyreek hill Ian
we know we love a new contract himself also made
some comments to the other day that he believes Tua to
have a contract coming his way.

Speaker 2 (31:56):
Where do we stand right now?

Speaker 4 (31:59):
What do he actually say was Tua should be one
of the highest paid players in the NFL, and if
he does get a new contract, no doubt he is
going to be one of the highest paid players in
the NFL, because that's what happens with quarterbacks. That's really
where we are in the quarterback market. If you are
someone like Tua and you get a new deal, whether
he let's say, gets to where Trevor Lawrence and Joe
Burrow are at fifty five or whether he gets to

(32:21):
where Jared Goff is at fifty three. I believe it
is wherever it is. You know that it's going to
start with the five. You know he's going to be
one of the highest paid players in the NFL. That
goes without saying. It's really on the Dolphins and of
course Tua and his reps right now to get a
deal done. And certainly, if you were to say, is
there a deal there to be made, it really feels

(32:42):
like there is. I'm not saying they're there yet, but
at least it feels like there is a deal to
be made. And for the Miami Dolphins, you've gotten to
this point you are no longer wondering is TWOA the guy?
Is he the franchise quarterback? By the offers that have
been made where we are, he clearly is. It's just
about finding the right number and finally, as you can
deal potentially before training camp begins.

Speaker 1 (33:02):
One week from today, the Dolphins report training camp. Tua
was there for a good chunk of the spring, didn't
necessarily do everything. What will be his level of participation
we shall find out in the very near future.

Speaker 2 (33:16):
Ian, Thank you very much.

Speaker 1 (33:17):

do you know? Tickets for that and other games on

The new look Chargers one of the biggest stories in
not just the NFL, but all of sports, and not
just because they got one of the biggest men in
the draft, Jim Harbaugh using his first draft pick on
Joe Alt. What can he do for Justin Herbert? Can
this Chargers team take the next step in a really

(33:59):
tough AFC West Division. Let's dig into it. Next on
the Insiders, Brandon Rice getting his first look at the
brand new Chargers facility, state of the state of the
art facility out here in El Segundo, California. Bred Rice,

(34:19):
of course, the son of Jerry Rice and one of
many offensive players that Jim Harbad, Joe Hortiz and company
added as they get things going in La Tom Piliser
Bridge a connon back here on the Insiders. You spent
a lot of time around that Chargers team. No surprise
that the Chargers went offense early and often in that draft.
What are they anticipating in terms of the immediate impact

(34:40):
from some of those rookies reported today?

Speaker 10 (34:42):
Well, Joe all you know, for the offensive line, he's
going to be on the starting line as everything that
we've seen during practice, but also a receiver to keep
your eye on Lad McConkey.

Speaker 11 (34:52):
He's the guy that the Chargers really like.

Speaker 10 (34:54):
Jim Harbaugh has praised him, spoke very highly about, you know,
the kind of player he can be. One of the
things that stood out to me when I asked our
research team for some information on him earlier today, he
caught eighty one percent of his targets, ranking in the
top ten in the SEC in college. Okay, yes, I
understand that's college.

Speaker 11 (35:12):
Not the NFL.

Speaker 10 (35:13):
But remember, one of the biggest issues that we saw
Justin Herbert have with someone like Quinton Johnston was that chemistry.
He didn't build that trust with him because of some
of the drops, whether it was his fault or not,
and so being able to be consistent being a guy
where if your quarterback's looking around, he sees you and
knows that you're more likely than not to catch the ball.

Speaker 11 (35:32):
It's going to come your way.

Speaker 10 (35:33):
And with no Keenan Allen, Mike Williams, we might see
this guy get a lot of action this season.

Speaker 1 (35:37):
I got to know Leabconki through the process at the
Senior Bowl and interviewing him. One of the nicest, most
unassuming types of guys you're going to be around. But
everybody says when he gets on the field in those situations,
that's where you want the ball to go in crunch time.
I talked to Chase Daniel, former Chargers quarterback, earlier day.
He said he wouldn't be surprised if laded over one hundred
catches this year. So file that one away for fantasy football.

(35:58):
So much pressure right now, I think it's fair to
say expectations on a Chargers team that everybody has wanted
to take that next step forward in recent years. They
went to the playoffs two years ago, it didn't happen.
Major changes across the building. How does Justin Herbert Jim
Harbond Company get LA back into the postseason and maybe
even deep into the postseason.

Speaker 10 (36:16):
Okay, well, there's a couple things. So let's start with
number one. Justin Herbert has to stay healthy. Right, He's
had back to back seasons where he's dealt with some injuries.
Jim Harbaugh said back across the street in February when
he took over as head coach for the Chargers that
he needs to protect his quarterback, and he stayed true
to that.

Speaker 11 (36:32):
I mentioned Joe.

Speaker 10 (36:32):
Alt, the player that they took with the fifth overall
pick in this year's draft. They now have three first
round picks and two veterans on that starting five offensive line. Right,
They're going to do everything they can to protect him.
And the second thing is they need to run the ball.
They need to be a better run team. Some of
these numbers that our research team shared with me, I
need to just make sure I get them absolutely correct

(36:54):
because this really puts in perspective how the Chargers have
struggled with the ball on the ground. So the four
seasons with Justin Herbert, there have only been four games
where running back rush for more than one hundred yards.
That's crazy to think about, right when you think about
Austin Eckler on this team. Only four games when they
had more than one hundred rushing yards. Also, the Chargers

(37:15):
average just three point nine rushing yards per attent that's
the third worst in the NFL. Despite all of this,
Justin Herbert has had forty one passing touchdowns on play
action passes.

Speaker 11 (37:27):
But imagine if he has a good run.

Speaker 10 (37:28):
Game to help supplement that right, and he maybe doesn't
need to throw.

Speaker 11 (37:31):
The ball down the field that much.

Speaker 10 (37:33):
Those are the two things that when I look at
this season, and we talked about this off camera, the
division that the Chargers are in, the AFC West, You're
going to have to get by the Chiefs.

Speaker 11 (37:40):
What do you need? You need your team to be healthy.
You need to be able to run the ball.

Speaker 1 (37:44):
Greg Roman, Jim Harby one of the best rushing attacks
in the NFL in San Francisco. Year one, back in
twenty eleven, they got there. Yeah, thirteen and three went
to the NCY Championship Game. Year two went to the
Super Bowl. That's where the bar is set when you
hire Jim Harbo Bridget, thank you very much.

Speaker 2 (37:57):
Oh yeah.

Speaker 1 (37:58):
If the Chargers are going to advance in the playoffs,
they got to get through you know that guy in
Kansas City Patrick Mahomes. He's back in training camp, reported
with the quarterbacks and the rookies the Saint Joseph Missouri.
Today we'll dig it into deep, a little bit deeper
on Mahomes, the Chiefs and how he's preparing what they
hope is a three peat. Next on the Insiders, The

(38:26):
NFL Flag Championships presented by Toyota are coming your way
starting this Friday. This tournament will feature the best of
girls and boys flag football representing all thirty two NFL teams.
Watch the action the summer on ESPN, ABC, NFL Network
and more Disney Networks, and visit NFL flag dot com
to start playing today. Time now for the scoop desoure.

(38:50):
It's the scoop of the day. Sounds good, I'll have that.
Mike Garavola brought you this scoop early this morning. Brandon
Aiuk officially requesting a trade. Months long standoff now leads
to this Auk saying he wants out. Forty nine ers
have not shown any indication they will change their position,
which is Brandon i uk center contract. We're trying to

(39:10):
win a Super Bowl. He's not going anywhere. They got
one week until the started training camp. We'll see how
things play out there. Meanwhile, as Ian Rappaport said earlier
tonight on The Insiders, Giants quarterback Daniel Jones not expected
to be in training camp on the pup list. It's
really a positive indication. He wants doing things on the
field seven to seven and things like that. You're not
allowed to do that if you're on the pup list.

(39:31):
So this doesn't necessarily mean Jones is full go, but
it does mean we'll see him participating in at least
some portions of practice, and boy are those practices close.
The Texans tomorrow become the first team to report as
a full squad. The Broncos, Packers, Seahawks rookies as well,
the Bears, the Chiefs, the Ravens. They're all reporting before

(39:53):
the weekend. And it's also almost time for Back Together Weekend.
That's right, Football is back. Celebrate by watching his team
across the league take the field for training camp. Back

is required for NFL Plus Back to Mahomes also arriving
at training camp and you know, got some rookies to
help him out with the bags for the first time.
Mahomes is bringing something that in his NFL career he's
never had in his room in Saint Joseph before.

Speaker 6 (40:32):
It was my first year. I'm bringing a TV. So
I haven't brought a TV ever before, but int DOUBLEA
came out and I'm gonna have to turn it on.
So I brought a TV for into Double A and
the Olympics. So that's my first year. I breed doing that.

Speaker 1 (40:44):
Welcome back to the Insiders, Tom pilaicero Ian rapport. TV
is certainly must have, right if you're going to be
in the dorm room for that long period of time.
And I'd like to know what is essential for you
on the road for training camp.

Speaker 2 (40:58):
And don't say that sure.

Speaker 4 (41:00):
You don't need to t this a great shirt. Your
fashion since is terrible. You don't need a TV. Just
have an iPad. I watched half of the stuff I
watch on an iPad, putting the bear by the way,
which is great. Anyway, I would bring a lobledge. My
short game is, let's just say, dicey, you've seen it
lobloods would be.

Speaker 2 (41:15):
It's a great time to practice.

Speaker 4 (41:17):
You don't need a lot, just need like a little
net and some balls, like, oh.

Speaker 2 (41:20):
Are you fitting that the sis? You don't have to
actually fit in the suitcase. You can just hold it.

Speaker 1 (41:25):
You walk on the overhead day club and you're allowed
on the play with just the club.

Speaker 2 (41:30):
Why it's not a knife or something worse.

Speaker 1 (41:33):
It blender confiscated every year in training camp.

Speaker 4 (41:37):
At some point. You don't that's right, you need it.
You don't follow the TSA rules.

Speaker 2 (41:41):
What am I gonna do?

Speaker 1 (41:42):
Get someone to come over and stick their hand into
the blender and press go. That's not an attack thing.
I do carry everything in one in one carry on
bag for the entire two weeks. Your blender stuff is weird.
She's a protein bar on the inside. See you normal
people eat protein bar.
