The Talking Place

The Talking Place

It’s the place where we talk. About what? That depends on the week! Every show brings a new guest, and with them, a new topic to cover. And if there’s no guest, I’ll be going on by myself, speaking my thoughts and opinions on anything from gaming, dad stuff, and life in general. If you’re looking to talk, I know a place.

Oh, Black Friday, where art thou?!

Here is my walk down memory lane. Where my feet are being guided by fond recollections of the past and pure discontent for the present.

Seriously, what in the coal-filled stocking has happened to Black Friday?! It used to mean something! You were proud to give someone a gift if you went out and fought someone's grandmother for it. It made it mean even more!

In this episode I get into my thoughts ...

Hey look, it's Thanksgiving!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! I know, it's been a weird few years and all with everyone realizing what actually took place to cement Thanksgiving as a holiday. It seems like a collective agreement happened to take this once chill and cozy holiday and cover it up with garland and lights. I get it! But... hear me out... Why can't we just, you know, still be thankful for things?

That's what this show is abo...

From cupcakes to Oreos!

This is one of those shows I've been wanting to do for a long time! I'm glad the schedules were finally kind and we were able to connect because I really enjoyed this one!

I had the pleasure of talking with Desiree, who I've known for over 10 years! Crazy how time flies. When she worked with Wilton, she was the one who helped me get my footing as a blogger. Giving me an opportunity that I mention on the show...

    This is STILL Halloween!

Here I am, with back-to-back episodes this week to celebrate Halloween! I feel like the movie episode before this one was good, but it lacked the Halloween oomph!, you know? Well, where that one lacks, this one makes up for it big time!

In this episode I go over thrillist.com's Best Halloween Candies of All Time! I mean, that's quite the honor, don't you think?

They listed 31 different candies! But for thi...

    This is Halloween!

Happy Halloween! Even though I had all month to keep updated and do the thing, here I am, scrambling away and trying to get something out at the last minute. I swear, it's like I sabotage myself on purpose because it's how I work best. ANYWAY! Here we are! What are we talking about?

Halloween movies! Well, I guess we'll use that term loosely, haha.

Don't get me wrong, these are good watches for the season, but of...

Happy Pokémon weekend! It's been a few years since the release of Pokémon Legends ARCEUS, and ever since, the world has been awaiting the net release in the Legends line of games.

And here we are! Pokémon Legends Z-A is now in the wild and ready to be encountered! And in this show, I get into the excitement for it and how much I can't wait to play!

Finally, the -ber months are here!

October is upon us! And with it comes all the glory of fall and spooky season! I think this is the first time that I'm actually on the ball enough to plan things out for shows. Usually, I'm struggling pretty hard with schedules and timing and I'm getting some sort of Halloween themed show out just before the night itself. But not this year! This year, I'm trying to stay on top of it! So here we ar...

I Don't Play Video Games No More, I Never Play Video Games....

Welcome to this week's show! And as you probably guessed, it's all about video games! I recorded this over a month ago hahahaha. It's the last of my pr...

    R.I.P. FOMO

ANOTHER book show?! After last week's show where I talked about what I've been reading, it's like my book era made a u-turn and smacked me in the face! But it's definitely not how it was before. As you'll see and hear.

Today, I'm joined again by Sara! You may remember her from a previous book show back in December of 2023, where we discussed her ever-growing discord server dedicated to special edition books and reading ...

    Reading is fundamental

This episode I'm going on about books I've been reading! It's been a while since I got deep in a book, heck, it's been a while since I've updated anything about reading anywhere. So what did I talk about??

First off, a community question. Let's see if you read the show notes before listening to the show:

Who do you think won my loyalty? Goodreads or StoryGraph?

A few months ago, I was in the process of moving...

A Blog is Worth a Thousand Posts

For the record, this was recorded back in April. Right in the midst of my blogging resurrection. Like everything else I was neck deep in, I took a break from that as well for the summer. I am currently in the process of cleaning off the dust and getting back into things, so let me get my bearings.

BUT! It doesn't mean I don't agree with what I said a few months ago. I am still very very much on my h...

    An ode to summer!

🎶Summer has come and pass. The innocence can never last. Wake me up when September ends.🎶

Listen, there is a tremendous bittersweet symphony playing in my heart every time summer comes to a close. Spending time with my kids and just letting them do whatever their heart desires without the constraints of school, it's awesome, it's the best, I love it, I do, BUT. When the last week, week and a half comes and there...

    Marinated thoughts taste better!

Hello there, fellow gamers! I know, I know, at this point, I might as well just have a gaming centric podcast again. But no! I'm just excited. Not everyday a new console is released, so I'm going to be putting out whatever I thoughts I have here and there.

Like right now, this episode is where I'm at with the Nintendo Switch 2. Am I pre-ordering? Am I really excited or just riding the hype train? I...

I’m full of that Christmas mornin’ feelin’!

MAN! End of the year is no joke! Not only is it typically packed with things to do, stuff to clean, things to bake, gifts to wrap, and about a hundred bajillion other things—  it’s also just going by so freaking fast! Everyone hail to the Pumpkin Song!

The Halloween show! I always love a good holiday centric show. Unfortunately, this time of year always proves to be crazy busy and I find it rather difficult focus on pumping them out. This year though, I'm really trying to put in the effort to do my little thing here and I managed to do something! Even took an extra day to add in sound bites, which I can't wait to consciously implement next time,...

    Still gaming!

Gaming update! Here's an entire show dedicated to what I've been playing. I don't think I play enough to be able to put out a weekly gaming show. But one of these episodes every so often giving updates on whatever it is I've been diving into seems like the best thing to do.

    Everything changes with time.

I feel like I could’ve gone on with “primer” episodes for a while. But I wanted to get into nitty gritty of things! Wanted to talk about what I’m playing and what I’m doing and my thoughts about the current state of gaming.

Maybe eventually I’ll get into actual fun gaming talk lol. Not this week though! I wanted to talk about what I’m playing and doing, but instead it turned into a 20 minute derailment on the mental roadblocks of being a stay at home dad and trying to carve out personal time.

It all needed to come off the chest though. And it’s laying down the foundation for future talks, so it’s not like I’...

      The Burden

The Burden is a documentary series that takes listeners into the hidden places where justice is done (and undone). It dives deep into the lives of heroes and villains. And it focuses a spotlight on those who triumph even when the odds are against them. Season 5 - The Burden: Death & Deceit in Alliance On April Fools Day 1999, 26-year-old Yvonne Layne was found murdered in her Alliance, Ohio home. David Thorne, her ex-boyfriend and father of one of her children, was instantly a suspect. Another young man admitted to the murder, and David breathed a sigh of relief, until the confessed murderer fingered David; “He paid me to do it.” David was sentenced to life without parole. Two decades later, Pulitzer winner and podcast host, Maggie Freleng (Bone Valley Season 3: Graves County, Wrongful Conviction, Suave) launched a “live” investigation into David's conviction alongside Jason Baldwin (himself wrongfully convicted as a member of the West Memphis Three). Maggie had come to believe that the entire investigation of David was botched by the tiny local police department, or worse, covered up the real killer. Was Maggie correct? Was David’s claim of innocence credible? In Death and Deceit in Alliance, Maggie recounts the case that launched her career, and ultimately, “broke” her.” The results will shock the listener and reduce Maggie to tears and self-doubt. This is not your typical wrongful conviction story. In fact, it turns the genre on its head. It asks the question: What if our champions are foolish? Season 4 - The Burden: Get the Money and Run “Trying to murder my father, this was the thing that put me on the path.” That’s Joe Loya and that path was bank robbery. Bank, bank, bank, bank, bank. In season 4 of The Burden: Get the Money and Run, we hear from Joe who was once the most prolific bank robber in Southern California, and beyond. He used disguises, body doubles, proxies. He leaped over counters, grabbed the money and ran. Even as the FBI was closing in. It was a showdown between a daring bank robber, and a patient FBI agent. Joe was no ordinary bank robber. He was bright, articulate, charismatic, and driven by a dark rage that he summoned up at will. In seven episodes, Joe tells all: the what, the how… and the why. Including why he tried to murder his father. Season 3 - The Burden: Avenger Miriam Lewin is one of Argentina’s leading journalists today. At 19 years old, she was kidnapped off the streets of Buenos Aires for her political activism and thrown into a concentration camp. Thousands of her fellow inmates were executed, tossed alive from a cargo plane into the ocean. Miriam, along with a handful of others, will survive the camp. Then as a journalist, she will wage a decades long campaign to bring her tormentors to justice. Avenger is about one woman’s triumphant battle against unbelievable odds to survive torture, claim justice for the crimes done against her and others like her, and change the future of her country. Season 2 - The Burden: Empire on Blood Empire on Blood is set in the Bronx, NY, in the early 90s, when two young drug dealers ruled an intersection known as “The Corner on Blood.” The boss, Calvin Buari, lived large. He and a protege swore they would build an empire on blood. Then the relationship frayed and the protege accused Calvin of a double homicide which he claimed he didn’t do. But did he? Award-winning journalist Steve Fishman spent seven years to answer that question. This is the story of one man’s last chance to overturn his life sentence. He may prevail, but someone’s gotta pay. The Burden: Empire on Blood is the director’s cut of the true crime classic which reached #1 on the charts when it was first released half a dozen years ago. Season 1 - The Burden In the 1990s, Detective Louis N. Scarcella was legendary. In a city overrun by violent crime, he cracked the toughest cases and put away the worst criminals. “The Hulk” was his nickname. Then the story changed. Scarcella ran into a group of convicted murderers who all say they are innocent. They turned themselves into jailhouse-lawyers and in prison founded a lway firm. When they realized Scarcella helped put many of them away, they set their sights on taking him down. And with the help of a NY Times reporter they have a chance. For years, Scarcella insisted he did nothing wrong. But that’s all he’d say. Until we tracked Scarcella to a sauna in a Russian bathhouse, where he started to talk..and talk and talk. “The guilty have gone free,” he whispered. And then agreed to take us into the belly of the beast. Welcome to The Burden.
