We keep our fingertips on the pulse of our community, y'all.

Speaker 2 (00:07):
It is upon us. Not my birthday, that was a
few days ago.

Speaker 1 (00:13):
But I've got a special guest in the studio. Ladies
and gentlemen, let's introduce it to you, Ladia Yates.

Speaker 2 (00:25):
What's going on? Hey, what's going on? Stormy? How much girl? Girl?
We up in here?

Speaker 1 (00:30):
I'm pumped about nine oh one day? Are you it's today?
I'm very excited. Yes, it is up. So nine on
one day basically started. Did it start after the pandemic?
Was it when we were when people started just having
a lot of pride in their cities and things like that.
I want to say so, yeah. The last one was

(00:51):
either last year or the year before, and so we
started doing things for our cities and repping our cities
in ways that nobody had ever done before. I think
everybody probably across the country started to have pride in
where they lived, and you know, those kinds of things.
It became popular and became it was always popular to
be a memphium, but became even more popular I think

(01:12):
during the pandemic because we all we got or we
all we had.

Speaker 2 (01:15):
You know what I'm saying.

Speaker 1 (01:17):
Yeah, yeah, So September first, ladies and gentlemen, and most
of you are listening to the show on September first,
so you you're Today's the day. But for those of
you that are listening the day before, yeah, you can
celebrate today too, but not on one day. Is September first,
And Latia has been working with the City of Memphis
because she is doing some things. Y'all, Latia, what's going on, girl,

(01:41):
what's happening? So September first, Sunday, we are having the
biggest citywide event celebrating the culture of Memphis. So I'm
super excited to be a part of this whole event,
experience event. Yes, this is my first time organizing an

(02:04):
event of this magnitude and I'm very thankful to have
this opportunity given to me by the City of Memphis.
Paul Young, Memphissie, Paul Young. Yes, So I want everybody
to come out. Let's have a good time. It's gonna
be positive. We have a lot of stuff going on.

Speaker 2 (02:20):
Is that your cell phone? I'm hearing you've been. I
know what happened.

Speaker 1 (02:25):
You've been your phone's been ringing a lot because people
want to be a part of this event. They do
and they're coming. So you've been all over the city
basically telling everybody in Memphis that if you love Memphis
and you're about the culture, then nine O one day
is definitely what you want to be a part of.
Tell us where the city of Memphis is celebrating nine
O one day. So nine O one day, we'll be

(02:46):
on Bill Street all through Bill all through real Force.

Speaker 2 (02:49):
Okay, okay, all day? So what times?

Speaker 1 (02:51):
From eleven am to five thirty pm? Oh so it's
really is all day? And I let let me check
the weather because I hear the weather's gonna be beautiful
fast it Yes, we have nice weather. Okay, so that's good.
That's a weather check. You prayed, we prayed. Uh huh huh,
God's giving us good weather. I mean, so eleven o'clock

(03:13):
is there? Itenerary? Is there?

Speaker 2 (03:15):
Are still? There are things like when are we doing
the flash mob thing? Girl? Tell me?

Speaker 1 (03:19):
So the flash mob is gonna be around two o'clock.

Speaker 2 (03:21):
I'm leading that. And you guys saw the videos, so
you should know the routine by now.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
We're gonna go over one time, maybe twice, and we're
gonna hit it. So that's my favorite part of the
entire event. But we do have a headliner, Big Boogie,
and a special guest as well, but I can't speak
on it, so yes, so it's gonna be amazing. We
have a poetry Slam, we have vendors, we have live painters,
we have face painting.

Speaker 2 (03:46):
We got a lot of activities for the youth.

Speaker 1 (03:48):
We have a Youth Talent Showcase, not talent show it's
a talent showcase.

Speaker 2 (03:54):
One's a winner, okay.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
We have the trivia Game by Unapologetically Memphis. So we're
gonna have some contestants come on stage and answer some
yeah okay, Yeah, you're gonna win some money and some merge.
The Grizzlies are one of our biggest sponsors, okay, as
well as Red Bull. We're giving out free red Bull
all day. Downtown Memphis, commission Field Street, City of Memphis,

(04:22):
l Ye Academy. We all put this together, and I mean,
y'all ca miss this. If you do, you're gonna be
mad because you're gonna see the fish.

Speaker 2 (04:30):
You're gonna be mad as you didn't come. Yeah, I
just want to say thank you.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
For trying to for letting me, Sue and Tracy be
your professional backup dancers.

Speaker 2 (04:39):
I mean what other?

Speaker 1 (04:40):
I mean, who's better than you three? To help me
out with a dance routine that he used to say
we were so professional, we tore it up in the
worst way to me. You actually did pretty good, Okay,
thank you? Yeah, almost as god as Pa, almost as
good as Paul Young.

Speaker 2 (04:57):
You know what I love about it? It's the dance
that you're doing.

Speaker 1 (05:00):
It's it's not just Memphis, but it's pretty easy, yeah,
for anybody to do.

Speaker 2 (05:05):
So did you come up with this dance? I did?

Speaker 1 (05:07):
So this is gonna be one of those dances that
we're gonna have to do every year, right, Okay, I'm
here for yeah. And it was a challenge fun, it
really is. You made it fun. It's it's it's for
people to get a little exercise.

Speaker 2 (05:21):
Right.

Speaker 1 (05:22):
So if you're if you're trying to do the dance,
you go to check out our video on social media.
Latia posted it. It's probably on my social air but
V one on one social uh in my heart yeah,
city of Memphis.

Speaker 2 (05:33):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (05:33):
You check the video out and before you go down there,
you can you can learn the dance because yeah, this
this show is gonna be airing pretty much all day,
so you got time to learn the dance and then
get down there and do the dance.

Speaker 2 (05:48):
That yeah, so this is gonna be good. It is.

Speaker 1 (05:51):
So what else are we doing down there, Latia? And
how big of I guess?

Speaker 2 (05:55):
Uh, how much was this for you as a personal
venture to to become a part of, because I know
you do a lot of stuff in the city I do.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
This was a challenge, but it was a great experience,
a great learning experience. And I do a lot of
events for my dance company, Lye Academy, and you know,
we have great turnouts, great events, but that kind of
caters just to my kids, my company. So this is
a city wide event. So this is like kind of
the first for me. And I mean I'm excited. I'm

(06:27):
sure you see online that I've just been smiling and
dancing because I just.

Speaker 2 (06:32):
Know how great it's gonna be. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (06:34):
Yeah, and it's free, doesn't costs for our favorite Come on,
free and highly secured. Paul is not playing about security
at all. That's the main thing that he cares about.
So come out, have a good time, bring good vibes only,
and we're just going to show people that we know
how to get together and come together in the masses

(06:54):
and have a great time. And it's going to be
positive and that's all that I want, and that's all
you know. Yeah, we should expect. Yeah, and it's lovely
that it is a part of Memphis.

Speaker 2 (07:05):
So I guess since we have you here, not as
well tell us what's going on at Lye.

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Okay, so Lye Academy is a dance company. For those
who don't know, we're stationed in Kyerville, but the majority
of my students are from the inner city of Memphis,
probably all.

Speaker 2 (07:23):
We just moved there.

Speaker 1 (07:25):
We have programs in dance classes such as ballet, hip hop,
major red, Tumbling, Memphis Jukin, Kids, cardio, probably more than
I can't think of off the top of my head.
But we operate pretty much Monday through Saturday, sometimes Sundays
if we have special events.

Speaker 2 (07:46):
And you have kids from ages what three or.

Speaker 1 (07:49):
So, yeah, three to sixteen seventeen. I even have some
of my kids that's older than sixteen that just like coach,
let me teach us something.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
I don't want to leave.

Speaker 1 (07:57):
I don't want to leave, ye so now I've a
transition some of my students into coaching.

Speaker 2 (08:02):
Really wow. So it's like we're a family.

Speaker 1 (08:05):
We're very type, very close, very deep, and you know,
we're open to more students having more students. So if
you want to be involved in l White Academy, the
best thing you can do is really just pull up.
We're open from five o'clock to about eight eight thirty
on a weekdays. The emails get drowned out, the social
medias get drowned out, so we will respond to you,

(08:27):
but you're gonna have to be patient. However, the best
thing to do is to pull up and roll and
get started.

Speaker 2 (08:32):
We are on a role.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
We're about to get into competition season, traveling, have some
TV shows coming up. I can't wait till you see
that National TV. Wait wait a minute, because you guys
have been pretty much highlighted on a lot of things
and even with a lot of celebrities as well. One
of our main artists that we work with is in
Eli Chapel. We've done some stuff with Big Buoy, We've

(08:54):
done some stuff with a little Baby you can see
us in his whole video. And more than that, we
are the face of Nike Kids. We do a lot
of work with Red Bull. Our older kids do a
lot of work with Red Bull. It's so much that
comes our way, and it's it's so much that's coming
our way right now that I have to put on
hold because of not on one day, but I cannot

(09:16):
wait till that comes out. We have major TV shows
and networks coming to Memphis to come like videos and
do interviews because they're really interested in l YE, and
I just I'm excited about it because you know, it's
not a lot of that. We don't get a lot
of those type of opportunities in Memphis, especially for it

(09:37):
to be positive. So I'm glad that they're calling. I'm
glad that we are on the radar. I'm glad that
we're a hot commodity. But I'm glad that is positive
more than anything. We're not on there for fighting or
mad kids or rocket case. Maybe we're being highlighted for
positive things only. So what was it like because you guys,

(09:58):
you took your kids to go dance at a church
at the kreflo dollars church. Yeah, Oh, we do praise dancing. Yep,
we do praise dancing. Baby whoever calls, somebody from Africa call,
We're doing African dance and we're gonna figure it out.
Whatever you need, we come and we're gonna learn. We're
gonna figure it out. So, yeah, we did something with
Kreflo Dollar. I mean, I'm sure it's many more artists

(10:21):
that we've worked with in companies and programs that I
just can't think of off the top of my head.

Speaker 2 (10:26):
But what's what's with you?

Speaker 1 (10:30):
What's what's why is it your heart to help these kids?
And what do you see when you see the little
ones dancing and expressing themselves and loving it?

Speaker 2 (10:39):
What do you what do you see?

Speaker 1 (10:43):
It's just who I am. I almost can't even explain it. Yeah, yeah, yeah,
And I just get a thrill. And it just comforts
me to be able to give back, give opportunities, be
a stepping stone for kids to do what they love
to do, because I feel like that's something that I
lacked when I was younger.

Speaker 2 (11:04):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (11:04):
Yeah, And so nurturing them while they're very young, I mean,
you just don't know what they're going to become by
the time they're out of high school, you know what
I'm saying. And I just want to be a part
of that, and I want to help them out and
you know, help them grow their wings and sowred. And
that's just something I like to do. It's really no explanation.
I like to do it obviously, I've been doing it

(11:27):
for ten years so far. L yeas you know, we
did our anniversary anniversary that you hosted this anniversary. That
was a lot of fun, right, thank you. We loved
you and we enjoyed it. And so, you know, being
in business for ten years, I got to love what
I do. That's a long time. A lot of businesses
don't don't last that long, don't last a year, I know,

(11:49):
some don't last time. I don't last fine, I know.
And it's been a challenge. I wouldn't say lately, but
I've went through some things and I've had some challenges
that that almost caused me to quit a billion times,
a billion times.

Speaker 2 (12:05):
But what's your get what's your get up and go?
What makes you get up and go? Because I've seen
a lot of your challenges on social media, I've seen
some of the stuff to talk to me right now
real soccer.

Speaker 1 (12:15):
Yeah, so like yeah, it's weird stuff and stuff like
that happens all the time.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (12:22):
Yeah, so it's yeah, weird fans like buying tickets to
come out here saying they're gonna live the rest of
their life with me from other countries. Crazy like crazy stuff.
Oh yeah, I guess that's just what comes with fame.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Sign me up. But I don't like it.

Speaker 1 (12:44):
Pollilarity when people love you and and and being a
global going viral globally, which is what you go viral
a lot, yeah, viral, so yeah weekly, yeah, so it
comes that kind of stuff unfortunately comes with it. But
you but you seem very grounded and you seem like
you've got it together.

Speaker 2 (13:02):
I saw your mama. Your mama was like, I don't
know who you are, but but what you want.

Speaker 1 (13:09):
Yeah, baby, the city don't play about me. I love y'all,
mephis y'all are so protective of l Ye and myself
and you know, Memphis. It sometimes it frustrates me because like,
Memphis has a lot to offer, It's very rich in culture.
There's some talented individuals here, Like I feel like these

(13:30):
dancers on my team are some of the best dancers
in the world and they're from Memphis. I believe it. Yeah, serious,
little ones, that's what I'm saying exactly. So it's like,
you know, if they're nurtured and uh, if we pay
attention to them, things would change. I think that's part
of you know, we we we talk about a lot
in our city about the youth and the problems in

(13:53):
our city. And I feel like what you are doing
and what others similar to you you are doing, that's
part of the solution. Where you're giving children another alternative.
You're giving them away to feel, You're giving self confidence,
you know, something that kids get when they are a

(14:14):
part of something, when they're when they don't feel excluded
from life.

Speaker 2 (14:19):
You know, you're giving.

Speaker 1 (14:20):
Them a life lesson because they've got to come together
with other kids. They got to learn how to get along.
They're making lifelong friends and friendships away from bad things
an idle mind. They're doing something, you see what I'm saying.
And when people when we get involved like that, either
if it's going to school and tutoring, if it's mentoring,

(14:43):
if it's doing something to give these children an option,
because some of them all they want is an option
and they feel like they don't have it. You know
what I'm saying. Yeah, So you're part of the solution.
Thank you for that, and I'm glad to be here.
And we just gotta get well, we gotta keep pushing

(15:03):
and you gotta you do have to get them early
and as soon as you can, because a lot of
these kids are so deep in it that it's like
it's gonna take jail to help them.

Speaker 2 (15:15):
And that's what we don't We don't want.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
You know what I'm saying because I'm mary tapped into
the community. I'm I'm cool with the politicians, the government,
and the killers, so I know what's going on on
all aspects and I know that. You know, we gotta
we gotta really pay attention to these kids and pour
into them. Yeah, now you're right. Yeah, And I what

(15:39):
you think they should do? Talk to them? What do
they want to do? How can you know what I'm saying?
How can we help you? What are you you know, like,
don't push your agenda on it. Well, I think they
need to do this, go to church, play basketball. Maybe
that's not what they want to do. Like you have
to see what they want to do. You know, I

(15:59):
was telling some of people on the radio the other day.
I was talking about, you know how my grandson is
now a teenager. He's a a what do you call
him when they're getting at nineteen twenty age? And a
young adult? He's a young adult, so a man. He's
not a kid, he's a man. And I was talking
to them about you know, sometimes I wish I had

(16:21):
a translator because I feel like the things that I
have to say sometimes to young people, not everything, but
some of some of the stuff that I have to
say is antiquated. And I say that because sometimes that
is my approach, and that what you just said don't
always work. You need to go to college, you need

(16:44):
to do this, you need to do that, you know,
just all in their ear saying you know, whatever sounds
good to me, that may not sound good to them.
You know what I'm saying, And it's like you, I
feel like I feel like I want to learn how
to meet you where you are. That's exactly what I'm saying.

(17:06):
That's what I was trying to say, instead of meeting
you where I want you to be exactly, And that's
what I was trying to say. Right there, you just
nailed it. So yeah, it's it's it's but it's it's
a dance. It's something that you don't always get right.
When you talk to a young person in the beginning,

(17:28):
you don't always get it right.

Speaker 2 (17:29):
And I'm gonna tell you this too.

Speaker 1 (17:31):
I'm telling you because I know, because I know these people,
they gotta trust you. There you go, That's what I'm
talking about, and that's how you get them to trust you.

Speaker 2 (17:43):
I feel like they got.

Speaker 1 (17:46):
Whatever you talking about and they ain't hearing it, trying
to hear.

Speaker 2 (17:48):
Them, trying to hear.

Speaker 1 (17:51):
Well, y'all, y'all gotta get this dance together. I'm gonna
let y'all hear a Liza bit of what Lottia did
with the mayor because she got together Hunter, she got
up professional dancers and together how to do the flash
mob routine.

Speaker 2 (18:03):
Y'all hear that she's doing the flash backup dancers.

Speaker 1 (18:06):
We had the communications here with Houston and we have
mayors Paul Young, Okay, so they ain't a routine, so
I just don't go over all right. So this is
so much fun to watch, And it's so Memphis, you
know what I'm saying.

Speaker 2 (18:25):
It's so Memphis. And you went down to the city
Hall to do this in.

Speaker 1 (18:28):
The may because Paul, You're finna do this routine even
running from the routine forever.

Speaker 2 (18:33):
I'm like, you know, let me just go one and
his office.

Speaker 1 (18:35):
Listen, And you did that, and you got him into
that thing, you know, pretty much like you got us
into it, y'all.

Speaker 2 (18:41):
I gotta see it, y'all.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
We we had no idea what we were doing, you know,
but I think we I think we did a pretty
good job. And I think it is easy. The dance
is really easy, and it a couple of times. Yeah,
I think anybody could do it from a from a baby.
My daughter could do Yeah, from a from a a
baby or yes, that's what I'm getting ready to say,

(19:03):
doesn't matter how old you are.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
If that's how easy I tested out the dance.

Speaker 1 (19:07):
I want to see if my daughter could do it
and my grandma, and they both could, so I'm like, okay.

Speaker 2 (19:10):
They can do it. Wow.

Speaker 1 (19:12):
Yeah, it's easy, and it's like I said, it's fun. So, y'all,
nine on one day is gonna be so much fun.
Bill Street is gonna be lit. You said, eleven or
eleven thirty.

Speaker 2 (19:21):
Eleven eight m.

Speaker 1 (19:23):
Ten thirty, y'all, ten thirty, ten thirty, and then five
pm twenty ends around that time five thirty, oh, huh
five thirty. Okay, so a lot of surprises. I actually
a couple of weeks ago, well, yeah, a couple of

(19:44):
weeks ago I interviewed Marcus nine O one.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
H that's all I got.

Speaker 1 (19:49):
He said, he said he was doing something. They were
doing something special too.

Speaker 2 (19:52):
Uh huh. So that's all. That's all I'm gonna say.
That's it.

Speaker 1 (19:58):
That's all right right, yeah him, Future and Bang came
out and hung out with Yeah. They're a part of
the DJ and Junk and Battle segment as well.

Speaker 2 (20:08):
Ah, y'all, this sounds like it's gonna be so much fun.
Is it anything or is everything for the kids.

Speaker 1 (20:16):
And for the adults? Is it all family friendly events?

Speaker 2 (20:20):
Yeah? So yes, it caters to all. Now y'all got
y'all gonna have any food down? Yalla? Were on Bill.

Speaker 1 (20:29):
Street food, Yeah, you gotta go in the restaurants, support
the merchants, and we also have vendors. They'll be all
through Bill Streets. Local business and that's what not on
one day is all the support the support of small
businesses in Memphis, Memphis, Memphis, Memphis. And you do have,

(20:53):
like you said, you got a lot of people that
are going to be there.

Speaker 2 (20:56):
I know you said Big Boogie is going to be there. Yeah,
he's headlining. But I mean, do you need me to
come sing some gospel music or something down there?

Speaker 1 (21:02):
Because we closed, we closed, the lineup closed, The line
up is closed. Lot of that's cold. That's cold. Okay,
go ahead with your line up. Tell me what who's
gonna be down there? So I'm just gonna get with them.
I'm gonna get with Big Buggy. You know I met
Big Boogie up here not long ago.

Speaker 2 (21:19):
Someone.

Speaker 1 (21:19):
I'm gonna holler at my boy, right, he gonna be there,
you know, he gonna shut it down. Baby, come on there,
you know what's going on. So we have on the
Alfred Stage. So Alfred's is a restaurant in bar and
has the stage and they're on b oh, it's not
far from the Shell on Wheel stage, which is gonna
be on fourth. So all the main acts will be

(21:40):
on Shell on Wheel stage, you know the mobile Shell. Yeah,
they're gonna be parked on fourth. So then on third
you have Alfred's. Alfreds is the inside venue and they
will have multiple artists performing. You have Kendrick P. White, Sosa,
you have a trippy Trippic Big Hanna, Burial Boys.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
You got a few Volks Liz. And then also.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
You have the poetry slim in there as well, right
after the artist stage. So you got the poetry Karen alone. Yep,
it's actually a contest. The poet will win an award
if I'm not mistaken, a cash prize. So that's going
to be super super super dope. And then we have
the Youth Talent Showcase. So it's not a talent show,

(22:24):
it's a showcase. Everyone's a winner. So you have ly
E of course, you know my kids are not going
to play. You have m Kenneth Cherry. He's so amazing.
He's a young man with an old so I'll call
him uncle, but he like what does he do? He
reminds me of King George. If you want to leave, baby,
are you twelve?

Speaker 2 (22:44):
Oh?

Speaker 1 (22:45):
He sounds like similar to him. His his own swag,
but it's like King George. Okay, so he'll be there performing.
Ceo Fam a cute little kid crew. They rap and
sing and dance. They're so cute. They're actually on my
dance team now they just joined. You got LEAs a Rat,
she's a singer. You have Josie the poet from Yagg Entertainment, y'all,

(23:09):
I love them. The Sean Eli from Young Actors Gill Okay,
he'll be performing as well.

Speaker 2 (23:15):
You got.

Speaker 1 (23:17):
You got the dopest major at team in Memphis, which
is Princeton Tiger Ratts that performing as well. You got
Ari Little She'll be on there rapping. So it's so
much going on. Like I said, we got live performances
and you're telling the showcase. We got the Memphis Jokin Battles.
That's gonna be hard. You know, I'm excited about that.
