Building bridges by connecting people in community. This podcast is from Church of the Master United Methodist in Westerville, OH, which borders Otterbein University. The host, Rev. Lucy Kelly, is the Associate Pastor and Director of Campus Ministries at Church of the Master UM. We wanted to offer time and space for people to talk about their experiences in our community. We will feature sermons, pastoral conversations, interviews with Otterbein staff, students, and alumni, as well as people from Church of the Master and our wider community. We want to consider ways can we offer support for one another, listen to our neighbors, and understand our interconnectedness.
Sermon 5 from our series of exploring (and unclobbering) scripture that has been misused to clobber and exclude LGBTQ+ persons. This sermon from Rev. Lucy Kelly and Rev. Jay Anderson offers some history on the United Methodist Church's exclusion of LGBTQ+ persons; as well as where/how the denomination is moving toward being open, affirming, and inclusive to all persons.
Sermon 4 of our sermon series of unclobbering scripture passages that have been used to harm LGBTQ+ persons. Rev. Jay Anderson and Rev. Lucy Kelly preach about Jesus' teachings and how Jesus' call to love God and love neighbor are primary. Jesus never offered words of judgement or hate or exclusion, neither should we.
Sermon 3 in our sermon serious on unclobbering scripture that has been used against LGBTQ+ persons. Rev. Jay Anderson looks at the passages in the New Testament that have been misused to harm persons, and helps us understand the historic nuances and theological depth of these texts. Ultimately, are we following Jesus' instructions to love God and love neighbor?
Sermon 2 (by Rev. Lucy Kelly) of 5 from a sermon series about faith and inclusivity. Using the framework and guide of Colby Martin's book, Unclobbered: Rethinking our Misuse of the Bible on Homosexuality, Rev. Jay Anderson and Rev. Lucy Kelly discuss the ways in which people have (for too long) weaponized scripture against the LGBTQ+ community. More importantly, they discuss how we can live like Jesus, who excluded exclusion.
