Practice of the Week: Find and build the areas that are fun.

Any great project, team, ministry or organization is fun to work on. So find and build the areas that are fun! If we’re doing work that aligns with our purpose, and we’re doing it with good people, and we’re having an impact on the world around us: Hard projects can be fun. Repetitive tasks can be fun. Work can be fun where there is a great culture.

Practice of the Week: Invest time in relationships.

One of the highest indicators of happiness and purpose at work is how well people are connected with others. We must prioritize connections and relationships. Extroverts and introverts agree – they want to have good working relationships. If you want a great culture, you must create a culture of connection.

Practice of the Week: Trust people to do what they are great at.

Everyone has an area, talent or ability where they are a genius. The more you release others to do that, the better your culture will be. Culture is hard to measure and name, but you will go a long way to build a great culture if you let people do as much work in their genius areas as possible and as little in the areas that drain them as possible.

Practice of the Week: Celebrate success as often as you can.

There is nothing that leads to more success than success. When you’re winning, you want to keep winning. So celebrate more! This week we are shifting to our third cheat code: Culture. Culture is a cheat code in uncertain times because a great culture (or a bad culture) either fuels or undermines so much of our work together. If you are winning, thriving, or succeeding, ...

Practice of the Week: Grow your habit and system to talk about job performance.

Performance feedback is A LOT less scary when it is regular, so get into a habit or system of talking about it! Talking about job performance and giving feedback will take you and your team to the next level. To thrive in uncertain times, you want to normalize these conversations.

Practice of the Week: Learn and grow from previous action

The faster you can debrief, process and learn from any project, event or outcome, the more you will learn. Whether your project, event, presentation or whatever else was large or small — one of the best habits we can develop to build competency is having a meeting to debrief.

Practice of the Week: Be direct and concise about your expectations.

When we leave people guessing about what to do, we set them up for failure. Direct, concise communication is the best way to clarify expectations. Having a clear idea in your head, or down on paper, doesn’t help everyone else. Clarity must be communicated. We continue to feel like we live and lead in uncertain times. That’s not going to change. But as we work to...

Practice of the Week: Act out your values

Too often we’re guided by the values which are ingrained, not defined. Great culture and action put your defined values into practice.

Practice of the Week: Define the desired outcome.

Unless you are clear about your desired outcome, you won’t get there. Clarity of outcome involves setting specific, measurable goals that are directly tied to your purpose. Without this clarity, it's easy to drift away from your purpose or to feel overwhelmed by uncertainty.

Practice of the Week: Get specific about your purpose.

Simon Sinek says “Start with WHY.” Jim Collins says “Start with WHO.” In uncertain times, what you really need is to start with Clarity and Purpose. When living and leading in uncertain times, CLARITY is the first cheat code. Without clarity, confusion and frustration will reign.

Practice of the Week: Reflect on clarity, competence, and culture.

There are 3 CHEAT CODES when it comes to leading in uncertain and frustrating times. Leaders who constantly practice them will be the ones who get ahead. They are: Clarity, Competence, and Culture. I grew up in the age of video games but before there was widespread internet access. We used to have to go to the store to buy a magazine with the game walkthrough, or ...

Focus of the Week: Build relationships so that you and others grow.

Mentoring shapes the future by building relationships where all of us grow. A mentoring relationship is transformational to the person being mentored and the mentor. Especially as we practice building trust, mutual sharing, challenging and encouraging.

Focus of the Week: Starting, checking in and ending coaching conversations

Just a little structure in a coaching conversation will make a BIG difference. Without structure, conversations can tend to wander, ramble, and not always have helpful endings. Three quick and easy additions to your conversations can make it a lot better!

Focus of the Week: They create action steps and you hold them accountable to progress

While coaching significantly increases learning and self-discovery, the best part is that it leads to progress and great results because of action and accountability. Focus of the Week: Ask great questions to unearth possibility

There is so much to explore when it comes to asking powerful questions. What I want you to know is this: a great question is one of the best tools we have to open possibilities and growth. So remember to ask questions for them (not for you), use their words, ask open-ended questions, don’t get stuck in either-or thinking, and let the silence do the heavy lifting.

Focus of the Week: Unearth the brilliance in them

I have a great temptation to tell people what to do and how to do it. That isn’t a coach approach! A coach approach recognizes that others are experts and helps to unearth their brilliance.  I have one coach friend who reminds me that: Each person is creative, resourceful and whole. The work of the coach is to help others discover that much of what they need for their progress and...
