Peters second letter is very similar to his first. His purpose in writing both letters was to stimulate the believers in Asia Minor to wholesome thinking by way of reminders (2 Peter 3:1). We must be even more deliberate about living by the Spirit for the time that remains because the end of all things is at hand. Since we cannot specify the precise time of Jesus second coming, we must live each day as if it were our last. When we turn from our wicked ways, when we are baptized as the pledge of a clear conscience and yet suffer in the body, we are encouraged to arm ourselves to have the same attitude as Christ Jesus who also suffered in the body and was yet without sin. Our salvation, the restoration of our relationship with God by faith through the sacrificial atonement of Jesus Christ, was not only foreknown, it was also foretold. In the opening phrase of his first epistle to the persecuted believers in Asia Minor, Peter identifies himself as an apostle, a messenger, of Jesus Christ, one who was directly chosen and commissioned by Christ to communicate Gods word to the body of Christ, the Church.
