Welcome to the Bishop mcdebit State Championship celebration show here
in Fox Sports fourteen sixty and iHeartRadio. Art Selby here
joined by rub Glease and Marty Bowman, and on the
phone we have Bishop mcdebitt head coach Jeff Wector, still
celebrating that state championship victory ten days ago. Already, guys,
that itself's kind of crazy. First off, coach, congratulations on
(01:51):
to victory and thanks for joining us tonight.
Speaker 3 (01:54):
Ranks Dorp.
Speaker 4 (01:55):
All right, well, a lot to unpack from that game.
We'll start in the first half. Just some observations and
want to get your thoughts on it. Definitely thought rumin
Catholic was a bit more physical than what we saw
from Pine Richland. You guys were able to move the
ball against them, but you guys just were not capitalizing,
I guess as much as as you normally do on
(02:17):
some of the red zone opportunities in that first half,
and also on that pick six opportunity there late in
the first half.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
Yeah, I mean they came out and you know, like
we see almost every week, they played a different defense
from what we saw. They were bringing off the off
guys off the edge of stop. They were definitely trying
to stop the run game and you know, one of
the things that but it was tough because they did
(02:45):
a good job of mixing it. So you know, they
were playing three over our two and receivers and a
lot of times we're bringing that outside guy off the
edge and he was running down there, and then they
bring the backside guy and they were running down our
plays from the back side. You know, so we thought,
all right, you know, I'm gonna go uh play action
(03:07):
pass on a rundown here, and you know, I know
they didn't steal our signals, but it's almost like they
knew because then they didn't. They didn't blitz and they
dropped everybody. So you know, we we had something. We
did go play action on the first touchdown. UH wanted
to go to Johntay on the front side. It's a
(03:29):
pattern that you know we've used throughout the year. You know,
we're looking to uh Johntay Quick on the quarter route
and you know, a lot of times this past year.
You know, we're throwing the backside posts of Domo and
they almost double covered Domo. And so what we did
(03:49):
is Doma made a nice adjustment and it was crazy
because the adjustment we every year in the end of
two days, you know, we do a Hail Mary drill,
both offense and defense and how we're gonna run it,
how we're gonna do it, how we're gonna defend it.
And we worked on and Stone said to Domo one day,
(04:12):
He's like, hey, Nikola, you're going the post and come
across the field looking but you know, kind of break
off that and run the back of the end zone.
And really without even that's what Domo did because you
saw that they were double covering us and someone's under
some pressure at that point, because it did take a
while to get there and you know, sewing through it
(04:34):
a little bit off balance, but Domo went up and
got the ball. We got the first touchdown, you know,
our second touchdown. You know, first of all, I thought
on we had a the ball down I think inside
their twenty, and you know we had a fourth and
one and it looked like from the sideline and then
(04:55):
it looked like on film. We got a real bad
spot and you know, so that kind of stopped one
of our drives. And then right before the half, you know,
when we scored with swoops. I didn't want to show up,
but I didn't want to score, so we ran it.
It's an rpo that we've run most of the year,
you know, where you know, we're pulling the backside guard
(05:18):
and kicking out the front side and and then we
run a free man route with Liam Fuller and they
went with it and Stead made a great read and
get it to swoops and you know, they scored. But
that was kind of the game plan. You know. I
like to when I when I see what people are doing,
I like to sometimes hold things instead of showing it
(05:39):
right before the half because then they'll see what we're
doing and make adjustice. So I had to do a
TV interview coming off the field, and you know, by
the time I get the locker room, you know, Stone's
over here on the whiteboard, and you know, I'm like, listen, yeah,
that's we can get that stuff. But you know how
we're gonna you know, the problem is we don't know
(05:59):
when blitzing when they're dropping. But there's one answer to that.
That's our po game. And we came out and ran
the RPO game a lot of times in the second
half of which I'll get into, but yeah, I mean,
we had a great opportunity. We had to pick six.
You know, we just dropped the ball. But it was
a nice play by Domo breaking on the ball. You know,
(06:22):
it would have been nice to go on twenty one three.
But that's pretty pretty much of setoptas. I mean, they
were very good in the secondary and you know number ten,
we knew, you know, he's going to duke as a safety,
but they're planning will wenebacker and you know he was
just you know, he didn't take on blocks straight but
man I kicked his run and hit. So that's what
(06:45):
they did, is they came out in the first half
and kind of surprised a little bit as how much
they blitzed on us and gave it zero coverage. So
then we went in fourteen three and a half.
Speaker 4 (06:56):
Well, second half, you guys go up twenty one to three.
Is done gets the right breaker on the touchdown pass
to Domo and then they recover a fumble in the
end zone for a touchdown and they also score. Then
on the fake punt, which shouldn't have counted as refs
missed a bunch of guys illegally downfield. You guys respond,
they respond, and it looked like you guys were putting
(07:16):
together one of those game clinching, clock eating drives. You're
up twenty eight, twenty four, and then just an unfortunate
deflection for the pick six, suddenly your team's down by
three points here in this game with about six minutes left.
Talk about the toughness of your football team putting together
that drive. You didn't get the touchdown, you got the
game tying field goal, and it was just so many
guys stepped up and made clutch plays. Gage Ruth and
(07:39):
John Tey with two big receptions there from Stone on
that drive.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah, you know, I'll go over a little bit of
the whole second half. So you know we did. We did.
Know they got us in a in a passing down
and you know, we went what's called four strong, where
we had a tight end block in the backside and
you'll had three receivers over to the right, and you
know we subbed in one of the other backs and
(08:05):
you know, I called him off and I might put
Jerome LaRue out there because we have a tendency trying
to you know, go against the tendencies that we have.
We have a tendency when Drome comes in on a
passing down, you know he's going to be involved in
in the past route and he was. You know, we
ran him on an arrow, ran a curl, ran a scene,
and then we ran Domo on a out and up
(08:26):
and you know, both the outside linebacker and the corner
jumped Drome because that's where they thought we were going
to the ball and they left Domal wide up, and
so we got to score. You know, we were up
twenty one to three. Thought we had a chance to
kind of put him away there. We had him in
a fourth and five and we had a mistake in
the secondary. So I mean we're in manon and you know,
(08:49):
we didn't carry the guy across the field. We kind
of tried to get underneath and didn't breaking route and
the guy was wide up. I really think if if
we hold him there, I think, you know, we get
a nice drive going. I think we could put the
game away. But we didn't. So, yeah, they had a
touchdown in an end zone. You know, we came back,
and you know we had a good kickoff return by
(09:11):
Domo and we had another r P O one. Uh.
It's one of the things that you know, Stone said, coach,
I think one of the RPOs we can get is,
you know, when they bring that guy just from what
we call Michigan, which is a double hit because that
safety's playing ten yards golf even when the linebacker comes.
We did John Tay made a great play, you know,
breaking the tackle and going down the sideline, and you know,
(09:34):
I thought during the game that he scored. But when
I when I did see the film, he did step
out at the one and went the quarterback sneak and
then you know the fake punt is you know, I'll
be sending that to the LA and just you know,
I mean, it can't happen. It can't happen in a
in a state champion chick game. First of all, I
know everybody saw the lineman illegal that legally downfield, but
(09:57):
when I watched, when I watched our film, first of all,
before even that it was an illegal formation, they did
not have enough bodies on the line of scrimmage, and
you know, neither one of them was called. We were
yelling that they had guys downfield. Matter of fact, the
guys that were on the field for us at the
time said that their coaches even saw it, and their
coaches were yelling for the punter just to run it,
(10:19):
don't throw it. And you know that was unfortunate. But
you know, going back to so then, you know, like
you said, we're up twenty eight twenty four, we have
a really nice drive going. You know. One of the
things is we played in the playoffs and you know,
Dominic Diazel's and Johnte quick a lot in the secondary
and Johntay started cramping up, and we're on a drive,
(10:43):
and you know, we were doing some different things because
we didn't have John Tay. We threw Howard Holme in there.
You know, the freshman did a good job, but you know,
we wanted to get back to the RPO game, but
we we really wanted Johntey in there. And when we
got him back, you know, we d an RPO. They blitzed,
you know, which they would have stuffed the round and
(11:05):
Johnte again was lit up. And I really think it's
the effect that his legs of the cramping. You know,
he just he couldn't get out of his break and
kind of almost you know, Famill coming out of his
break and put his hand up and they get to
pick six. But you know, our team has been resilient.
I think, you know, one of the things that helped
(11:27):
is with this team is you know, no come back
and almost win it against State College. Our guys knew
we could go down the field. You know we did.
We we ran with threw, you know, like you said, Gauge.
You know, Johnsay made a couple of real big plays.
Gage Ruth made an unbelievable catch, uh, and you know,
and still made a great throw. You know he was
(11:48):
under duress, uh, you know a couple of times in
the game and made some great throws throw earlier to
Gauge and earlier in the game and a and a
throw uh the Leo Fuller uh thrown off off platform.
You know, we got down there, we thought we had
something we didn't. We didn't score and we had that
(12:09):
fourth and goal from the three. I mean we debated
for about fifteen twenty seconds. I'm like, listen, we have
to kick the field goal, and aning came through. You know,
some of the concern was on the defensive side of ball.
You know, we're giving them a two and a half
minutes to go down and you know take a field goal.
But you know, I just uh, you know, the way
(12:30):
they were playing it, it was gonna be tough to score.
They had a very good red zone defense, and you
can do that when you have the speed that they do.
They were a very fast team, you know, so now
they can load up the box against the run, you know.
But still you know, you know, pretty good cover guys,
so you know, and then Akilan Smith comes up big
with the interception. You know, we drove as far as
(12:53):
we could and you know, the forty two year yard
field goal that could have ended it, and Grella you know,
he just you know, tried to kick it a little
bit too hard and that's what happened there. So you know,
went there overtime. But I'm really you know, our guys
never gave up. Uh. That was a very good football
(13:14):
team over there. A lot of division and kids and
h you know, to come back, you know, when you
have adversity and you're winning the whole game and should
have been up probably by two or three scores, and
let them come back and go ahead, you know, but
again I think it's our senior leadership, especially stone Stone
was calmed the whole time, and you know, our guys
(13:36):
at last on that last drive, you know, going out
in the field, we're like, listen, we're gonna do this.
We're going down to score. So I can't say enough
about these kids.
Speaker 7 (13:45):
Jeff, I wanted to comment also on that late drive
you talked about guys stepping on Megan plays, Gauge Ruths,
catch on the sideline. There got a lot of attention,
a lot of highlight, real stuff, and we talked to
three of us, Marty Art and I pregame about keys
to the game, looking at the two rosters. Obviously a
(14:07):
lot of star power. You know, a lot of matchups
you looked at and we commented about, you know, championship games,
stay tight on the line, games like that at any
level offen or decided by I don't know if you
want to term it, like your complementary players, your role players.
You know, guys that show up from time to time,
maybe not every week, And specifically I felt like Gauge
(14:28):
Ruth and also your tight end Liam Fuller were guys
that we singled out in our pre game that might
be keys that night, Lo and Behold both Gauge and
also Liam Fuller. I believe had five catches, and I
believe four of them were right down the stretch of
that game.
Speaker 3 (14:45):
Jeff, Yeah, I mean both days. You're right, you know,
it's all these a couple of meric players. And you know,
one of the things that you know, if you want
to actually get in to talk about the season, is
is we're a little bit different offense this year. Some
of the we did because of prison that we had,
but I thought we were a lot more multi dimensional,
whereas the last couple of years, you know, it's run
(15:08):
the ball or throw the Marquis, or throw to Rico
and throw to Tyshaw Russell or or Mario Easterley, and
you know, you know that's what was Again, we take
what they gave us. And of course, in the back
of my mind, I could see Marty, Marty Bowman in
(15:29):
my office drawing up on the white board, coach, you
got to hit this tight end more. We gotta get
this tight end more. So you know, I thought about
Mario on the sideline saying, yeah, yeah, we gotta get
the ball here. So yeah, they did step up.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
You know, I I talked to Liam after the game
and I said, I've got to get with Rob McLeish
on this to look up some old stats here, Lea,
I said, but your five receptions tonight might have been
the most any tight end hand of the season at
BISA mc Demon since I've been there. But another name,
you know, going along with what Rob said and you
mentioned it was the the pick by Killing Smith. I mean,
(16:05):
what a huge play for that young man to come
up and make that pick.
Speaker 3 (16:09):
Yeah, he did a great job. I mean we were
we were in some bracket coverage and uh, you know
they tried to run, you know, run the screen that
they did, you know, but fake it and try to
get him down. And you know, you know, our kids
were well prepared. Our defensive staff had the well prepared,
and we really had two guys there and Kill them
made a nice break on the ball and and you
(16:30):
know it was a big h interception and you know,
all our guys played well. It's just not those guys
we just mentioned. I mean, the offensive line played well.
You know. One of the things that the difference is,
I mean, I still think Private Instland was just as
physical as them. The difference was, you know, we we
kind of and I was worried about this coming into
the game. Is we're kind of better against the bigger
(16:52):
defensive line. It's sometimes the quickness and they had some size,
but they were very quick up front and did some
stunting and gave us some things we expect. Our office
line justh did play well. You know, the defense, you know,
they did what they had to do when they need
to make a play. You know, Lucas was getting held
all the whole game and still made pays. So, you know,
(17:14):
just a great team win.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Coach, I know it's been talked about all season long.
Special teams. Of course, you guys losing the state final
four last year, nothing went right on special teams. You
talked about playing some more starters on special teams. You
guys really worked hard on it. Special teams were so
much better this year. And the irony if there you
are in the state championship game lining up they kick
(17:38):
a forty three yard field goal and then ultimately do
win the game on a field goal. Also, throughout this
playoff run, you lost Grella there for a couple of weeks,
Stone had to punt. Even still, the coverage downfield was
good on special teams. And just talk about the improvement
and the irony of actually then winning the state championship
on a field goal.
Speaker 3 (17:57):
Well, we made our minees made up last year after
losing his house the way we did, and you know,
it was a total team after but special teams, you know,
really hurt us in that game. And we did talk
to the players and that players took a lot more serious.
You know, Alex Marsigall did a good job with with
the special teams, and you know we did put more
(18:17):
starters on. I mean, it always helps when you have
a kicker like Aiden. I mean it's just you know,
coach Chris Kaher, who was our former defensive Coornare, actually
was in in the box in the coach at box
on the headsets with me, helping me with some coverages
that they were giving. And I said to him, I'm like, yeah,
I know, I guess I get that you wish he
(18:40):
was our kicker at some point when you were there,
because he says the team starting on the thirty to
forty yard line, they're usually on the twenty. Aid it
really helped, you know, Again, it was really we probably
put a little more time in than when we have
in it. We put more time over the summer into it,
you know, and it's just not the coverage teams. I mean,
(19:00):
you know, we had we had a couple I think
three good returns into their territorial and kickoff returns Frida
during the game. But we did that all year. I
mean we couldn't. We couldn't then I won't get Rob
you know, started it, you know, with not Ish just
being able to play. But I mean this made a
(19:20):
big difference. But again, you know, you look, you look.
You know, Jerome LaRue popped in there in State College.
He had a nice kickoff Returney had an eighty six
yeard return where we actually didn't block that well against Exeter.
So I think it's all around. I think it's you know,
more of an emphasis for US.
Speaker 8 (19:38):
UH.
Speaker 3 (19:39):
Players took get more serious and did very well. You know,
Alex doing a better job in the king staff helping
Alex with that has helped. But again, it it all
goes back to players, and you know, we we were lucky,
you know, we had some guys that we hadn't had recently,
you know, at the caliber of an Aidenbrella, Jerome LaRue
and Is Palmer, so you know, kind of goes after them.
Speaker 2 (20:01):
Coach, you mentioned that return by dom and I was
a little surprised that they kicked those short kicks. And
the first two times they kicked it to Johntay and
he had good returns on that, Like, I'm thinking, are
they recognizing this? So the third time they kick it
there and all of a sudden, I look up and
Dom's there. Was that due to Johntay being tightened up
(20:22):
with the leg thing or was that something you guys
just did?
Speaker 3 (20:27):
No, it was, uh, Johntay was crampeding. So we uh,
you know, early at the beginning of the season, we
we we were putting it. We didn't really kind of
know because he kind of came late in the summer.
We didn't really know what we had in s Farmer.
So originally, originally we started out the summer with Domo
back deep as the number one guy, and then the
(20:47):
two wings were John Tay and Dream Maru. And then
you know, we decided, you know, we don't really want
to risk Domo and John Tay returning kicks. So the
state championship, you got all hang out, So we let
them finally go back. But on the one that Domo returned.
Gode was scramping up, so we knew that they were
(21:08):
going to kick a deeper ticket to their sideline, so
we put Domo in. H We switched Domo on the
side because Namo was on our sideline returning, and you know,
they kicked it to him and he made a great return.
Speaker 7 (21:21):
Jeff, one thing you talked about throughout the season was,
you know, the physicality that you know, it was so
much talking to me about playing the Commonwealth schedule, and
you had said that you really felt that playing the
schedule that we played this year really prepared the team
for the playoffs, particularly the later rounds and I guess
(21:42):
specifically Pine Richland and then Roman Catholic. You know, when
you look back going through the gauntlet of the schedule,
was there anything that really surprised you about the way
it all unfolded, the way the season unfolded, And was
there any point where in your own mind you felt like,
you know, this team is ready to go on that
(22:05):
postseason run.
Speaker 3 (22:08):
You know, it's interesting you say that it's one of
the disappointing things about last year. Is you know, and Robb,
you've been around, you know, since I've been there, is
you know, our teams always get better as the season
goes on and kind of peak in the playoffs, and
unfortunately last year somehow we peaked the first three games.
(22:29):
So you know, we're we we wanted to go back
into Commonwealth. Everybody's like saying Port mcdevin and you know,
what's mcdebe gonna do with the big you know, in
the con with the big boys, you know, and I
let real explaining a PA football moves now on Friday
night that we are the big boys. So you know,
but again I said, I don't think we beat Pine
(22:50):
Richland if we didn't play the schedule we did, especially
that back end, and you know, we knew. So one
of the things I look that every year. I know,
you know, Marty claims that I have this nickname air Wector,
but you know, you do what I've been taught by
Dick Shanner. You do what you're what you're talent, you
(23:14):
know what what you have, you you molded around there.
So we our offense, even though we're running a lot
of the same plays, but we presented them different because
going in this season, I knew we had all in
experienced receivers, even Domo even though he was a senior,
was inexperience, and you know, I said that we we
(23:37):
can't go spread all the time. And you know I
knew we're going to go and what we're gonna do is,
you know, we have an experienced offensive line. They're big.
You know, Brandon Bredon Wector and Jake Minnie did a
great job. You know, we talked about and Brandon talked
about going back to the days when you know he
played for Lamar Banks, uh the light great Lamar Bank.
(24:00):
We always talked about playing bully ball up front, and
we wanted to be the bullies and we wanted to
run the football. And what that did is allowed our
fevers as the season went on, to learn and get
better and you know, and you know, took some pressure
off of them. But you know, there was there must
have been a clinic out there because Harrisburg, the defense
(24:20):
Harrisburg ran against us was a total surprise. But it
seemed like about five different five or six times we
ran into that this year. And you know, one of
the things that helped us is they able to play
action pass, you know, not all the r pos. We
ran the r pos a lot in the second half
of Roman Catholic, but we're running, you know, and in
(24:43):
some of our same plays, we just gave you different
presentations out of different formations. I'll go back to you know,
we started doing that, I think, and now tune a
game and then, you know, Carlisle, one of our favorite
pass routes are a post with a dig and instead
of being outside, we cut the dig down a little bit,
(25:03):
but we condensed it. We can sentence our formation, so
we faked isolation, got those linebackers sucked up, our dig
was open every time we ran it. We probably should
have ran it in a little bit more. So, you know,
coming in, we kind of knew that's what we were
going to be. And you know, to do that, we
had to run the football. We had to be able
(25:24):
to run the football. And you know, I was very pleased.
Is you know, I think we we had well, I know,
we had over three thousand yards rushing and we had
over three thousand yards passing. And I don't care who
you're playing in high school football. When you can do that,
you know, it's been a real good offense.
Speaker 6 (25:43):
Coach.
Speaker 4 (25:44):
I know you talked about this some with Marty a
couple of weeks ago. I'm not big into moral victories
and losing games. But after you guys fall down twenty
one to noth in the State College in that game,
I truly believe if you would have had a few
minutes more in that game, you would have came back
and won. But down twenty one to nothing in that game,
you guys just turned on the jets and and never
looked back all the way through the playoffs and win
(26:06):
in the state championship.
Speaker 3 (26:07):
Yeah, you're right. You know that was a turning point. Uh.
For one of the turning points for us is we
had had a conversation with myself, what do we want
to do? We we came out of that East game
banged up. No it was a physical, but it was
a kind of a dirty game, and we were banged up,
and you know, looking at it is, you know we're
(26:28):
well passed at this mc devin. Worry about winning division titles.
You know, we win, we get a share of the
The only thing was you know, really you know your
competitives and winning and also you know your parents the byeway,
but in the same play the long game and when
the playoffs and worry about the playoffs because I knew
going in I didn't think anybody. I did some a
(26:50):
lot of looking at UH teams when I could during
the season of the five eight team, the top five
eight teams in in District three, and I said, you know,
I'm not gonna sacrifice a possible at least district title
on one game. And we talked about, you know, if
we started getting banged, that we're gonna pool guys out.
(27:11):
And when it was twenty one nothing, you know, I'm like, well,
we're gonna play. We're gonna play a little bit. It's
what happens. You know, we got hot offensively, you know,
going into that game. And then this is what propelled
us is going in that game. State College, not just
their starters their whole year there. We gave up i
think sixty two points in nine games, and you know,
(27:34):
and they were very good, but in the secondary good
at good up front. And you know, even when we're
down twenty one nothing. I mean, you know what people
didn't know that if Stone has a little bit of
a strain and UH for two weeks going in that game,
if Stone didn't throw the ball, you know, threw the ball,
(27:54):
letting throw the ball. I think on Tuesday at the
State College week one. One day he was he was
throwing left handed, and you know, and when the quarterback
doesn't throw much in this during the week of practice,
you kind of know that he Most quarterbacks are gonna
be a little off. And early in the game Stone
(28:15):
was high on his balls. You know. The first play
we had Domo open for a touchdown. Actually that was
essentially the same play we ran and scored against Rough
mcatholic to start the second half. Domo was wide open
and just overthrewing, but we drove the ball down and
then we we had to block uh steel goal. And
then even the second drive, we had a Braake drive
(28:38):
going Shoo's made a great run, you know, breaking tacks. Unfortunately,
you know, they ripped the ball out. So I just
told the guys, hey, listen. You know, we kind of
referenced to paulk at the game, said we're just gonna
keep on pecking away. You know. We opened up the
offense a little bit more, you know, uh, going back
to Marty Fras, you know, we kind of went more
(28:59):
air rector and you know, we did a great job,
and unfortunately, I agree with you Art, I think if
we played four more minutes, we win the game, but
because they didn't know how to defend us. And but
what it did is, you know, obviously we had to
do some things differently defensively, but offensively, I can when
(29:21):
a team gives up sixty two points or so in
nine games and you scored fifty five in one game,
you know, it's kind of I felt it kind of
gave the offense confidence. But I really think you know,
where really turned was the Extrara game. You know, you know,
obviously we were having difficulties all year offense or defense league.
(29:45):
I mean, really, hindsight, I really feel we should have
been sixteen and l should have won both those games.
And so one of the things that we were having
problems with all the penalties, lack of focus, guys being selfish.
If the guy pitches up, we've put them back and
then we get to or somebody said something to us,
when we say something back to them, they're always getting
(30:05):
the second, second guy. And you know we're preaching it.
I mean, we tried everything. We tried running them after practice,
we tried the guys and defenders, we tried taking some
playing time away and it wasn't working. You know. Finally,
I just said, looking for us to keep on moving
on that we're getting into better competition. We have to
stop with the penalties and that game we have very
(30:26):
few penalties. We have very few penalties, and you know,
I felt you could feel, you feel a practice that
the kids just came together. The other thing is guys
like Stones and Lucas Waller that have been there, played
in the state championship game. You know, they were telling
our guys, we can't make the same mistakes as we
did last year. You know, I mean you should have
(30:47):
saw those two the uh you know first week when
we played lower and often. I mean they are on
guys like we have to jack up the intensity. You know,
we can't have what happened last year. And really I
felt the three weeks of the season we finally really
became a team.
Speaker 7 (31:03):
Jeff, this might be a tough question to answer, but
you can go however you want with it. You're kind
of leading me right into it when you're talking about
Stone and Lucas jacking up the intensity and kind of
letting people know the standard of what it's going to
take to really finish the job and be able to
get those state title rings. Twenty twenty two versus twenty
twenty four. You worked so hard, so long, for so
(31:26):
many years to get that state title in twenty two.
How is how was this journey different, if at all?
Or what different feelings or emotions do you have with
the twenty two state title versus this title in twenty four,
which you know, also another element of that is, you know,
(31:47):
the disappointment of Dallas last year, so you also have
a redemption kind of element as well. It's an open
ended question, but you personally and your staff, you know,
how is this this ring different?
Speaker 3 (32:00):
It's funny because in the quarterback meetings today, yes Son,
still coming to the quarterback meetings, Son asked me that,
you know today, you know, how do you feel you
know twenty two? Ly for twenty two, you know, we
knew we're just so talented that if we stayed healthy,
(32:20):
especially after really I knew that we had a great
shot to win a state title at beat al CLiPPA.
You know, we spent all seasons that year worried about,
you know, getting physically stronger and a little tougher to
play against them, and really the Mossile game down there. Uh,
(32:41):
you know, I kind of had a real good feeling
that a this is it and no matter of fact,
Nick Scider told me that, you know, he told me
going into the year, if you don't want with this team,
you might as well give it up. You're not gonna
win one. So there was there was I thought there
was a little more pressure in twenty too, you know,
(33:02):
but it was it was fun to go through it,
and we also learned a lot from that, you know,
And I mean this year, you know I've told people
is if you had told me over the summer that
you know, this team's gonna win a five A state title,
I was like, yeah, I don't think. I mean, I
really felt that we were gonna win a district title.
(33:22):
You know, then we let it go where it is.
But you know, there was just so many young kids.
I mean when you look at really that starting lineup
on Friday, you know, in the state final, we really
only had five seniors start, and when you had four
freshmen get significant time and really even Dwayne Dwayne Clark
(33:44):
got some time. So you got five freshmen get significant
playing time in the varsity football season and you're playing
in the state still game. You know, it's just but
you know, once once we get past I had a
good feeling because when we got when we beat extra
to the way we did and just so the way
(34:05):
we were practicing and the way we came together as
a team. You know, I knew privor Rison will be
a tough game and they knew went in and you know,
again this goes to themselves. It's just a guy like
so you know, I told him going in, I'm like
the way they play their defense inviting you to run
the football. But they're very physical, but they're taught to
(34:27):
throw against you know, we're gonna have to throw. You know,
we have to run the ball and then try to
loosen them up. Uh, get them to put more guys
in the box and then throw the ball. And that's why,
you know, when we got them a man demand when
they had to go heavy box down in the red
zone by Rislin. You know, we we hit them twice
on touchdowns with you know, uh one on one pass routes.
(34:51):
But the way they were planning, they always had an
extra guy no matter how you lined up, uh two
by two, three by one, both sides eight, they always
had one more guy covering than we had going out.
And you know, but stones on selfish, I mean, you know,
here we got the all time quarterback in every stat
there is in the state, and we didn't throw the
(35:12):
ball a whole lot at that game. And you know,
he's Une Sell and he you know, I told him
at half, I'm like, hey, I think we once we
do this, we can get this. And he's like, because,
don't worry. The way Sloops runs, just keep on running
swoops and happened with Stone, but that wouldn't have happened
on that twenty two team, you know, and any So
(35:33):
it's just one of those things that twenty two you
knew it was going to kind of happened, or you
thought it was going to happen. Twenty four is just
it kind of reminds me this last three weeks, the
last three weeks of the season reminded me, you know,
going back to two thousand and six, you know, when
we played Harrisburg, down to Harrisburg, and you know, they
(35:54):
killed us during the regular seasons, playing the season, but
we kept on getting better. And that game just guys
played and they plays that they've been all year long
or in their career. And I felt, you know, in
these last three weeks, guys played better than they have
in their whole career and you know, against good quality opponents,
(36:17):
and so, I mean the first one is always special,
but this one's also very special, just because all the guys.
I mean, there were so many guys involved in this,
like I talked about before, and so many young guys.
Just to see this come together is just really satisfying.
Speaker 2 (36:33):
I'm glad you brought up about Stone and the Pine Richland.
I think if before the pregame interview, if you would
have been sitting here and said Stone's going to complete
five passes, I think we might have thought, I know,
I thought we're in trouble here. But I'm glad you
brought that up. Becoming those five passes were so significant,
couple of them all the way across the field, over
defenders and everything. Just really I mean, five incredibly meaningful completions.
Speaker 3 (36:57):
Yeah, you know, and I don't know if you know five,
I don't know if that accounts see the two point
or the touchdown, but I mean he threw the ball
really well. John Tay ran some great routes, tom O
and Nanzo ran a great route. Uh. You know the
problem was, you know, when they were beaten, when they
were beating the guys underneath. They had a safety sitting
(37:19):
over top on either side. We went so and then
you know late in the game they went to a
one high instead they're too high. And I was just
just like this start of the twenty two state championship game,
it was about Radyo Stone but checking. I hear him
already out there making a tag, which means he saw it.
I heard him called Tennessee tag, Tennessee tag Tennessee, which
(37:43):
tells her alignment not to go downfield. And and also
you know John tay to run the seam and you
know we gheit that for a touchdown. So I mean,
and that's what it takes. Is is again, we had
a lot of guys doing a lot of different things
this year, spreading the ball around, and in some ways
it made us even a better offense because you didn't
you know, there's not one or just one or two
(38:04):
guys you could focus on and put the game plan on,
because we had so many guys that could make plays.
Speaker 4 (38:09):
Coach, coming up in our next segment, we're going to
talk to some of your seniors from this year squad,
just talk about what this senior class meant to Bish
mcdevia football.
Speaker 3 (38:20):
He did a great job in leading all year, and
like I said, you know what Stona Lucas said, but
you know, Jj you know, did a great job. He
played well. He's a little bit quiet, you know, land
them loud. You know again, you know we talked about
and he's like, coach, can I get some defense, because
that's where the college coaches seemed to be recruit like
in the playoffs. In the playoffs, you know, we can't
(38:40):
afford to get you down. You know, we'll get it
in the playoffs. And then he comes up in as
a couple of sacks and and two interceptions in that.
You know, you look at what you know, Jaden Garden smirk,
We're gone, smirk. He played a very good game. Darius d.
S Allis, I mean heard us he went down with
(39:00):
the knee injury in the first half against Roman Catholic
and that hurt us a little bit. But he played well.
You know. Dante Luckett played well, especially early in the year,
had that pat six one hundred and two yards against
Mount Saint Joe. And then you know, when Tyler got back,
he didn't play as much safety, but he did a
great job on special teams. You know, that is a
(39:21):
senior leadership, and you know it just you know, seeing
Lucas take you know, people didn't know that in the
Harrisburg game he took play the game. Lucas got swoops,
helmet on his knee, and you know he played with
the springed mcl A lot of kids would have been
out he played with it. But really for the next
four or five weeks he didn't have explosive to this.
(39:44):
But he came back it really, he really, you know,
he was back, you know, the coming the Valley game.
You know, Benny Brooks before he got hurt, you know,
call to make all the adjustments on our defense. You know,
so the seniors did an unbelievable job, you know, and
then you look at just being a team r j up.
He comes in and plays well, you know, when when
then he wents down and you know it's especially tough
(40:06):
because you know, as you know, I spend so much time,
you know, being an offensive winter quarterback coach, other than
just being a head coach. I spend so much time
with my quarterbacks. And you know, last Thursday, the day
before the state championship game, you know, the bell rings
at two o one, So about two o'clock, Stoneham and
uh Sebastian get up and you know, they're you know,
(40:28):
get ready to get their stuff, ready to go to
the next class. And you know, so that I just
kind of looked at each other because I think we
both caught it at the same time. It's like, after
all these quarterback meetings we've had the last four years,
this is it. And I looked at him. I said, so,
this is our last quarterback meeting together. He looked at me,
he goes, hey, start lads, Coach. He goes, I'm coming
(40:50):
down here until until I leave. So you know, he's
down there, and you know, we we started a little bit.
You know, we watched you know, you know, we what
it took because I had so much to do last week.
I think it was last Wednesday. We actually finally got
to you know, Stone, Sebastian and I finally got to
review the game film together, and you know, we went
(41:11):
over and there's some things that you know, I pointed out,
but Stone's gonna have to get it, you know, to
do a little bit better in college. And you know,
we you know, so I point out some things that
you know that we want Sebastian to know so you know,
it's been great, and you know, today, you know, it
was kind of a relaxed quarterback meeting. You know, we
just kind of joked around a little bit and that's
when Stone answered that question. But you know, this senior
(41:32):
class met so much dust and obviously you know we
don't we don't want to stay titled without them and
their leadership.
Speaker 7 (41:38):
Well, now that the mission is complete, so to speak,
hopefully you're going to get some time to rest here
and enjoy all the great things have been happening in
your family. For for McDavid fans out there that don't
that don't know or maybe aren't aware, Coach Wector is
a grandfather. Now, what what has that been like? And
enjoying that new experience in your life, It's.
Speaker 3 (42:01):
Been great, you know, enjoying Uh, you know, my daughter
Vanessa put up on Facebook. I saw it the afternoon
of the state championship game and giving his car seat
wearing his mcdebit football beanie and his mcdebit seventy nine
ninety seven. It said, you know, you know he's rooting
(42:25):
for Grandpa and uncle b. And then you know, then
you know Bayden, who was our offensive line coach got
married this past weekend. You know, I wanted to thank
h for you know, I haven't had a free weekend
since the end of July and he's spended it in
another week. So we had a good time. It was
(42:45):
good to see that. So, you know, I'm hoping over
a Christmas break, I get a chance to take a
little bit of time to relax a little bit and
maybe reflect on some things and reflect on some other
things that you know what I'm talking about, Rob and uh,
you know, but even as you're starting to get busy, uh,
you know, Beagles are gonna have us down to the
(43:06):
Giants game. And then I just got an email. Be
Eagles are doing this the Philadelphia Eagles Honor and they
want us to come down with our seniors Thursday, January second.
Speaker 6 (43:17):
Two.
Speaker 3 (43:18):
Uh, you know, they're gonna do a high school honors
thing and which seems really neat. So we'll be busy
with that. Of course, you know, we're going down to
the to the capital again and uh, Bishop already made
his plans. You know, I really want to thank out
thanks a senior. He sent out a really nice the
(43:40):
day before the state championship game, and and we showed
it to the whole school the day of the state championship.
Nice talk for about a minute minu and a half.
Huh for us And and I've seen it. The players haven't.
They're actually gonna see it tomorrow at school. He sent
a congratulates toy video and it was big for him
(44:05):
because you know, he's a Philadelphia guy and you know,
to beat Roman Catholic. I know, I don't know if
it ever came through, but you know, there was gonna
be a small friendly wager what I don't know between
the two between the two bush ups.
Speaker 4 (44:20):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (44:21):
So, yeah, we're gonna be busy, you know, the next
couple of months and uh, you know, get back in
the weight room and get back a little bit when
we get back after midterm exams in the middle of January.
But you know, you're right, Rober, I'm gonna sit back
and take enjoy that, you know, enjoy you know, my grandson,
and you know take it from there.
Speaker 4 (44:43):
Well, coach, you know we could we could sit here
all night and talk about Pish mcdebit football with no
problem with you, but we will cut this off. We
have some of your players coming in here, surely want
to congratulate you on winning that state championship again and
not a district title. It's just been a magnificent year
for b Sha mcdebit football. We appreciate you doing the
interviews with Marty each week in the pregame, and we
(45:05):
wish you very merry Christmas.
Speaker 3 (45:08):
I same to you, guys, and I just want to
say big shout out to you guys. Thank you, Thank
you all our sponsors for doing this. I mean to really,
you know, you're part of the Big Fish mcdebit football
brand and you're a big part of that and we
appreciate that. And glad you guys were alone for the rod.
Speaker 4 (45:25):
Thank you very much. Coach, you have a good evening,
all right you doo okay, take care. We'll see.
Speaker 1 (45:34):
Let's get back to the Bishop mcdebit five, a state
championship celebration show on Fox Sports fourteen sixty and iHeartRadio.
Speaker 4 (45:46):
All Right, welcome back to the Bishop mcdebit State Championship
podcast or a radio show on Fox Sports fourteen sixty
and iHeart Radio. Art Selby here joined by Rob Hogleise
and Marty Bowman. Guys were lucky to have for mcdebit
players team cap since here in the studio with us
Lucas Lawler, JJ, Torus Stone, Saunders, and Landon Block. We're
going to start with JJ and Lucas first off. Lucas
(46:09):
will start with you, number eleven, defensive end, six ' three,
two hundred and thirty five pounds. You're going to buck
now for wrestling. You're the guy that brings the cross
onto the field before every game. This season, just an
amazing season. Fifteen sacks, ninety seven tackles. You had over
two hundred career tackles at mcdebit twenty four and a
(46:30):
half sacks. That's second most ever behind Noah Spence. Watching
you play this year, it felt like you were either
on the quarterback, you were being double teamed or held,
which we yelled quite a bit watching the games this year.
Go back to that night. You know you have a
shot to win another state championship there against Roman Catholic.
(46:50):
You guys, you've played such a solid game. You held
him down to a field goal in the first half.
Second half, they get some things cooking against you a
little bit, but you guys, even though you fell behind
late in the game, you guys were able to come
back and ultimately you get to stop there in overtime
and you win the game.
Speaker 9 (47:06):
So obviously the nerves hit, but at the end of
the day, we all came together as a team and
we just like picked it back up and just got
through it. With all the work that we've done throughout
the season, it really helped us to fight through and
get it done.
Speaker 7 (47:20):
Lucas, coming into the year, the defense not a lot
of starters back, three or four starters back. A lot
was put on you, Vinnie Brooks, you know Maurice Barns
who was a junior this year, but a lot of
parts around you were guys that didn't have the experience,
were new to the defense. What additional pressure did that
(47:40):
put on you as a senior captain to not only
kind of, you know, fulfill your responsibilities as a d M,
but also to kind of help the coaching staff get
that defense ready for the schedule you played.
Speaker 9 (47:54):
Yeah, I mean I definitely put a weight on my shoulders,
but I just had all those guys before me, like
Riley and them that taught me how to do it
for the younger guys and brought me up with me.
So it just helped me a lot to like think
back and help those younger guys get ready for the
test that was at hand and the job that we
had to get done.
Speaker 7 (48:10):
And early on, you know, second game of the year,
the Harrisburg game, obviously didn't go the way that we
wanted with the overtime. You came out of that game
a little bit banged up, which maybe a lot of
people didn't realize. You know, how were you able to
kind of fight through that and kind of keep playing?
Speaker 6 (48:29):
You didn't.
Speaker 7 (48:30):
You didn't miss any games even with that.
Speaker 9 (48:33):
Yeah, I knew it was my senior season, so I
didn't want to miss any games, and I didn't want
to let out the team by missing a game. So
I just wrapped it up as tight as I could
and kept like going to pt and trying to restrengthen
it and get it better as fast as I could,
keep playing in the games, And within like two or
three weeks, it healed up and I got it back off,
and I felt like myself again, and I started going
(48:53):
as hard as I could.
Speaker 2 (48:54):
So Lucas Sart mentioned about the hole eve and how
we'd pointed out how many times you were held and everything.
Did the frustration ever just get to you? I mean
that you know you would kind of lose. I mean,
obviously we don't know what you say on the field
and everything like that, but it has to be frustrating,
especially when you're being held. It seems like seventy eighty
percent of the time.
Speaker 9 (49:14):
Yeah, I mean definitely, some of the guys on the
team know, like how I react whenever it happens. Like
definitely some of my jerseys like got ripped and I
had to fix something and get them stitch back up
before the next game because of how many times I
was being held. But I feel like you just have
to keep playing and just trying to put your team
in the best situation even if you are again held,
and fight through it.
Speaker 2 (49:32):
I think the ultimate compliment I was Pine Richland game
the one time they actually triple teams you over there
on the far sideline from us, but yeah, they get
the triple team.
Speaker 6 (49:40):
Yeah. Yeah.
Speaker 4 (49:42):
Lucas talk about the game up at State College. So
you're down twenty one to nothing and then you guys
battle back, and we talked with coach Wector about this,
and we felt like if there were four more minutes
left in that game, you guys would have won the game.
Just talk about, you know, the adjustments you made and
there there's no good losses, but I mean are moral victories,
but kind of propelled you guys how to roll through
(50:02):
the playoffs and then win that state championship.
Speaker 9 (50:04):
Yeah, that definitely put a chip on our shoulder and
helped us like learn that it's not like a game anymore.
Like you really have to like lock in before you
go out there and play and you can't just joke around.
So I feel like bringing us into playoffs with that
on our backs and the chip, it just like helped
us push through and made our guys fight even harder
and like know what was going to happen.
Speaker 7 (50:21):
Art alluded to this earlier, Lucas, but I wanted you
to elaborate on it a little bit and maybe you know,
talk to mcdebit, the fans and the community out there.
Not just being a senior captain, but you were the guy,
you know, so many traditions at Bishop McDavid High School,
but you were the guy this year that brought the
wooden cross out onto the field each week. You know,
(50:44):
what was that experience, Like the emotions that you felt,
the kind of the intensity that you felt, you know,
just an open ended question. You know, what did that
mean to you? And what did this whole for your
experience mean to you.
Speaker 6 (50:57):
Yeah, I mean it really meant so much to me.
Speaker 9 (50:59):
It was probably some of the best years of my
life that I'm going to have whenever I live, and
I'm just so appreciative like my teammates and my coaches
put me in that situation to hold the cross and
be a captain on the team and get to get
it done the way we did and go out the
way we did.
Speaker 6 (51:13):
It just felt really good.
Speaker 4 (51:15):
Lucas, We're going to give you a chance to talk
a little bit about your your wrestling career here. You're
a two time PIBA metallist. You finished fourth last year
one eighty nine, two time District three champ, three time
sectional champ, and going into the season you have one
hundred and six wins. I just talk about your wrestling
career a little bit as we advanced in the wrestling
season here.
Speaker 9 (51:34):
Yeah, wrestling is a lot of fun and I've always
liked this since I was a little kid. I mean,
wrestling is definitely a lot different than football, and it's
a different aspect, so like getting back into it is
always a bit of a struggle, like losing the weight
and getting my conditioning back. But I'm trying to get
back into the groove and hopefully want to stay title
like I did in football this year, my last my
last year, my senior year.
Speaker 4 (51:53):
How does how does wrestling you know, help your your
football game? You know, get into the quarterback.
Speaker 9 (51:58):
I feel like the most I feel that wrestle like
helps me with football at ows with my hands, like
it helps me get the guys off me or like
pull them a certain way. I feel like I'm just
strong with my grip and stuff.
Speaker 4 (52:09):
All Right, we'll talk to JJ here next. JJ number
seventy seven, right tackle, six foot five, two hundred and
ninety seven pounds. JJ, talk about the offensive line this
year and how you guys improved through the season. Of course,
with that, you got the running game fired up there
as we headed into the playoffs with that three headed
monster or even throw the ruin there as well. But
(52:35):
of course you know you guys are blocking. I mean
mcdevid always has, you know, great skill positions. I mean
you have the best quarterback in the state, you know
back that you're blocking for him, and that that running
game as well. But just talk about that heading into
the playoffs.
Speaker 10 (52:47):
Yeah, well, we know we had to focus because we're
gonna play like more tough people with like Piers and
all of them, So we had like focus and uh,
we have to focus next play, Like if we mess
up a playerff to focus on the next one.
Speaker 4 (53:01):
I guess we should throw stone in running wise, you
did have five rushing touchdowns this year, and you had
a and you had you had a big one there
in the state championship game as well.
Speaker 2 (53:14):
JJ, how much difference did you notice moving from the
Keystone to the Commonwealth this year?
Speaker 10 (53:20):
The guys were like, definitely tougher, Like here's bringing all
of them. It's a tougher competition. You know, their defense
is way better and like the players, like player by
players way harder.
Speaker 11 (53:30):
JJ.
Speaker 7 (53:30):
I wanted to ask you and them, We're also going
to ask Land and Block the same thing. But the
O line as a unit coming into the season, obviously
internally you guys knew what you had and how good
you could be. But I think in the outside world,
you know, in the media, I think there was some
question as to how good and how this group would
(53:51):
hold up. It really ended up being one of the
main storylines. I feel like the whole midpen and beyond
this year. You know, talk a little bit about the
dynamic among you know, the starting group, you know, all
the guys in the unit, and and your coaches and
uh coach Minic and coach Braiden. How that all came
together this year.
Speaker 10 (54:11):
I mean the meaning is I was gonna talk right,
But we always worked since like January, every Saturday Saturday
practice the morning. Uh, we kept some of the same line.
We just wished center and guard. Dude's always like working,
so it wasn't much of a switch. But I feel
like we came like as a good line. Like we
came together as a team, especially during like the playoffs.
Speaker 7 (54:35):
And that dynamic with UH, with your group and and
your coaches. You know, how how were they as motivators?
How did they motivate you?
Speaker 1 (54:42):
Uh?
Speaker 2 (54:43):
Pretty well?
Speaker 5 (54:43):
You know.
Speaker 10 (54:44):
Coach Braiden always like hyping us up pregame, especially against Extra.
You know, he helped us get that win. Motivated in
the locker.
Speaker 4 (54:50):
Room, guys, what's it like playing for Coach Wector.
Speaker 10 (54:58):
He'll definite like stick out, like if you do something wrong,
he'll you like, but he also like congratulates when you
do the right.
Speaker 4 (55:03):
Things, Lucas, I'll ask you the same thing you want
to happen there.
Speaker 6 (55:06):
Yeah, playing for coach back is awesome.
Speaker 9 (55:08):
I mean, he's a great guy, but sometimes he definitely
is a stickler to like the stuff that he likes,
and he'll tell you if you're wrong.
Speaker 4 (55:15):
All right, let's let's have some fun here. Okay. First off,
give me your your picks in the college football tournament
coming up.
Speaker 6 (55:22):
I'm a big Notre Dame guy, so I think that
Notre Dame is gonna win.
Speaker 11 (55:25):
Well, I agree, j I say Texas.
Speaker 4 (55:29):
Okay, how about uh, let's let's go for the NFL playoffs.
Who we think in there?
Speaker 9 (55:35):
I'm also a Commanders fan, so I'm gonna go with
the Commanders in the Super Bowl.
Speaker 10 (55:38):
Oh wow, Well, I'll say the Texans.
Speaker 4 (55:43):
We don't have to worry about my team. I'm a
Cowboys fan. So it's it's been it's been a tough season.
Speaker 2 (55:48):
He's talking about the other Texas team, Mark.
Speaker 4 (55:51):
Yeah, Yeah, that's that's for sure, all right, Cauyz, So
we thank you. We're gonna get a stone and landed
on here. If you guys want to switch up seats
here and we can Uh, we can talk to those guys.
You're listening to the Bishop mcdebitt State Championship Podcast show
here on Fox Sports fourteen sixty iHeart Radio. Art Selby
here joined by Rob mcgleise Marty Bowman. In our first
(56:12):
segment tonight, we spoke with coach Jeff Wector, and make
sure you go back and listen to that. Right now,
we're joined by Landon Blouk and Stone Saunders. Landed number
fifty three, six foot four, two hundred and forty pounds.
You're a two way player. He played some left tackle,
defensive tackle, some tight end earlier in your career. This year,
(56:33):
as the season went on, when it got deep into
the playoffs, there, Land and you really rose to the
occasion with you got your first career interception there against Exeter,
you got another one in there against Pine Richland, some
fumble recoveries, some sacks there, and you got better. You
rose to the occasion when your teammates needed you to, sir.
Speaker 12 (56:52):
I mean, coach Weck told me I'm gonna get a
chance to play some defense in the playoffs. So I
always worked at that. I lifted all at all throughout
the season. Just really wanted a really wanted my chance
on defense, and I got it. I wasn't looking back,
I was I was taking.
Speaker 7 (57:07):
That chance, Landon. Was there any sort of point in
the season. We talked about this with coach Wector earlier,
but obviously, you know, you guys got off to a
great start against Mount Saint Joseph. The Harrisper game was
a was a tough one. It could have gone either way.
I think everyone felt like, you know, mc david should
have won the game, but sometimes it's just that's just
(57:27):
how it goes down. But then from there, I guess
the task was just trying to get better and improve
and build toward what you ultimately did. But in your
own mind, either you personally or as a as a
as an O line group, was there a point where
you felt like things were clicking or where internally you're
like you felt like was a turning point of the season.
Speaker 6 (57:48):
Absolutely.
Speaker 12 (57:49):
I mean, when we got towards I want to say
State College and Lord Dolphin, I felt like our oar
line was really starting to click together, our double teams
were starting to come together. Past pro is really really
starting to look good. I mean, and then Pine Richland,
I feel like that week of practice was our best
week of practice for the old line, and we I
(58:09):
think played one of our best games.
Speaker 2 (58:11):
Well here's something you didn't have to think about for
all these years. But we have a field goal kicker
this year, right, Yeah? So were there ti times that
you're thinking, you know, man, it's it's fourth and three.
But I hope coach Weck does not bring on yeah,
bring one eight? And I mean, did you guys was
it a pride thing? Hey, we can pick that up absolutely.
Speaker 12 (58:30):
I mean, I know there's definitely times where we've been
we've been no yelling at each other, like let's go
for this.
Speaker 6 (58:36):
We can get this.
Speaker 12 (58:37):
It's a small, small yard game, like we can definitely
get this.
Speaker 2 (58:41):
But yeah, Alred talked about the Harrisburg game and we
were talking a little bit about it. And I don't
know if you guys know this, but the ref told
and I won't say who he told, but what would
have been the winning field goal from fifty two missed
by inches? And he said it would have been good
from sixty two. That's pretty say get umpressing. You know,
I don't know, but I don't remember where it landed.
(59:03):
I don't remember particular, but yeah, pretty impressive.
Speaker 7 (59:08):
Land and we already touched upon it. But the postseason,
the playoffs, you know you really already obviously is the
left tackle I'm protecting Stone. You have a huge role
on this team, but then playoffs is a whole other level.
You know, Chris Thompson one of your one of your
teammates who had a great year. He was really one
(59:30):
of the better defensive tackles in the Commonwealth. Of course,
Chris wasn't allowed to play in the playoffs because of
the transfer rules that applied to Bishop mcdevin, and I'll
leave it at that. You know, you were called on
to do even more play some defensive line. How much
fun was that? And teaming up with Lucas. I know
there were games where when you guys sort of started
(59:52):
to tighten the screws when we had a lead. I'm
thinking of the Mechanicsburg game where we took lead, they
were trying to come back into two of you. You know,
you kind of just wrecked havoc.
Speaker 12 (01:00:02):
Absolutely, it was a lot of fun. I mean mean,
most people don't really know this, but me and Lucas
have played football with each other since like second third
grade and all the way up through I mean there's
probably been a year or two where we didn't play
with each other home, but it's just it. We really
felt like we needed to step up because there's younger
guys on the D line, young guys on the defense
in general, and we needed to set an example for
(01:00:25):
those guys for this year and this coming year.
Speaker 4 (01:00:28):
Len And we've asked some of the other guys about
this as well, and Coach Wector, I mean the loss
at State College, you guys lose by three, but you know,
we felt like, if there were another three four minutes,
you guys win that game. And as I drove back
from State College that night, I mean, we lost, but
I didn't feel bad because I love the fight in
this team when you're down twenty one to nothing and
you're right there and they played a great game. Their
(01:00:51):
quarterback was right on the money all night long, and
you guys you almost came back and went you could
see you guys were coming, and then it just really
carried into the playoffs, you know, all the way through.
Speaker 12 (01:01:02):
Yeah, I mean that was definitely something that impacted us
right away. I mean, I mean, we it was. The
bus ride home was just terrible. I mean, tell everybody
wanted to get right back.
Speaker 11 (01:01:13):
To work that Monday.
Speaker 12 (01:01:14):
I mean, it was definitely something that we wanted to
focus on and take take away from there and just
really attack our mistakes in the playoffs.
Speaker 4 (01:01:24):
With that loss, then, of course you guys didn't get
a BUYE Were you happy to come back then, as
you were saying, and play immediately the next week and
not have that two weeks off?
Speaker 12 (01:01:32):
Absolutely, I mean Coach Wex said right after that game
we wouldn't have a buy and that he was fine
with that.
Speaker 6 (01:01:38):
It gives us a chance to knock that dust off
right away.
Speaker 2 (01:01:41):
What h What else diuld he say that that post
game that might stand out to you? How did he
address you guys about it?
Speaker 12 (01:01:48):
He definitely addressed our penalties, like our personal fouls, which
I had when he told me I was a little
selfish for that, and I absolutely agree, and I could
have controlled myself a little bit better.
Speaker 10 (01:02:01):
But uh and we scored, so he got personal and
we scored.
Speaker 12 (01:02:09):
But uh, yeah, I felt like Coach Weck he said
all the right things to keep that team going, keep
us motivated going on the rest of the year.
Speaker 2 (01:02:16):
Mention how proud he was of the way you guys.
He up there.
Speaker 12 (01:02:19):
He always Coach Weck's always said our team has the
heart of a champion and said that our line and
our offense really fought hard that game to keep us close.
Speaker 2 (01:02:28):
That's what he mentioned. Usually once during the year in
one of the pre games, I'll ask him what the
personality of the team, and I can tell you this,
he was. He was really thrilled to coach you guys.
Speaker 5 (01:02:38):
This year.
Speaker 6 (01:02:39):
He really was.
Speaker 2 (01:02:40):
He really was, And I know there's been other years
he's not as thrilled. Let's put it that way.
Speaker 4 (01:02:45):
Yeah, let's talk to Stone number eight, six foot two two,
one hundred and fifteen pounds listed going to a big
blue country Kentucky. In your senior year, forty eight touchdowns passing.
He had five rushing touchdowns in the state title game
here nineteen to twenty six, two hundred and eighty seven yards,
two touchdowns. You had one rushing touchdown in your career
(01:03:06):
at McDevitt fifty two and six record, four district titles,
two state titles, Pennsylvania state record for touchdown passes, passing, yards, completions.
Just recently, for the second time, he won the Max
Preps Pennsylvania High School Player of the Year Award, Pennsylvania
Gatorade Player of the Year Award. You're just racking up
all sorts of trophies there. So I guess my question
(01:03:28):
for you would be, of course, you guys played a
great game. You're up there in the fourth quarter. It
looks like you're putting a drive together to end the game.
You had the ball for like four minutes or so,
you get the unfortunate pick six, and suddenly there you are.
You're down by three with like six minutes left in
the state championship game. What are you saying to your
guys in the huddle there to begin that that drive?
Down three?
Speaker 6 (01:03:48):
Now?
Speaker 8 (01:03:50):
I mean, you know, looking back when I'm kind of
glad the pick six happened, just because it made the
game like way more legendary when you look back at it.
But obviously, in the moment, I was probably the only
one happen there. Wasn't thinking we were probably gonna lose.
But you know, I was just happy we got the
ball back. I was, you know, we got the ball
back out of the ball in my hands. I got
to go win this game. So you know, I just
told the guys in the huddle, I mean I think
(01:04:11):
Landon remembers and JJ remember me saying this a couple times.
I was like, I just need your best three minutes,
and you know all you got for three minutes. And
clearly I was wrong because we did have to go
in overtime, but you know, the guys gave it all.
They had the end, you know, Johntay was banged up,
you know, the pick six. It was just kind of
like a you know, he was hurt so he couldn't
come out of his break and then you know, me
and him like, we can't practice that. You obviously can't
(01:04:32):
practice something like that. So unfortunate thing happened, and but
you know, we got the ball back and we just
started driving. John Say had a big play for I
think like almost forty yards and his leg just gave
out the end. He might have scored on that one,
but you know, you know, like you were saying earlier
about the wanting to kick the field goal at the
end of that drive, I did not want to kick
the field goal. I think I was one of the
(01:04:52):
only ones in the huddle that was saying, let's go
for this. But but you know.
Speaker 11 (01:04:57):
We made that.
Speaker 8 (01:04:58):
I thought we had a chance to get a close
for field goal at the end of the game and
give it to Aiden on.
Speaker 11 (01:05:02):
A better try.
Speaker 8 (01:05:03):
But you know, we were a little slower in our
pace on offense, just because we wanted to in case
nothing would work out. Then just taking an overtime, not
making any mistakes, and then you know, gets it over time
and let Aiden win the game.
Speaker 2 (01:05:14):
I'm gonna I'm gonna ask about the field goal, okay,
because I had a tough angle in the press box
because I was up against the wall, so I had
to stand up lean forward. Okay, I knew it got hit,
and I almost feel like I heard it. But from
my view, this is what I could see. I knew
(01:05:35):
there was a block or something, somebody got a hand
on it, and I the back judge right behind the
d line, motioned, yeah, you go there for the ball
to be laying on the ground. And this is what
was so great about I didn't see anything after that.
I knew that there was it got tipped or hit
or blocked or whatever. And all of a sudden, Art
(01:05:56):
who's only watching the refs at the goalpost, there's this
silence and arches, screams, and it's good okay, And I
talked how many parents. I can't tell you nobody saw
that ball go over. Yeah, you guys from the sidelines either.
You know, I didn't see it until five o'clock the
next morning when I was watching and replay but reaction,
(01:06:16):
you guys did or didn't see it or any of
you see it at all?
Speaker 8 (01:06:19):
I mean, nah, I mean I saw, I saw what
you saw. I was you know, I came off the
field at that QB sneak for a couple of yards
and I got together with Domo, Alex Marska, and Connor Marscool.
We were all just kind of huddled up ready to
charge the field, and I saw get tipped and they
all started running out and I was on the sideline
because you know, I made the mistake in the Harsburg
(01:06:40):
game where I thought the Harsburg kick went in and
I was on the field looking like an idiot because
I I hemmet up celebrating, But so that kicked going in.
So I had a little bit of PTSD from that,
and then UH had But yeah, once everybody started wrestling field,
I was like, all right, I guess we're just gonna
do this without you know, the clarification from the rast
or anything. So but that moment was great. I mean
I keep seeing videos of it, uh, and I mean
(01:07:02):
I don't know if there was a better moment in
my life than that. I mean just watching it happen
over and over. I mean I probably I probably watched
it like ten times a day.
Speaker 11 (01:07:09):
Honestly.
Speaker 8 (01:07:10):
The video of me and all of them running out
after the field goals made I mean, that's just like,
that's that's the high school dream right there. It's like
one of the state championship your senior year. I mean,
the way it happened, it was just I mean there's
no other word really than legendary with how it went out.
Speaker 11 (01:07:24):
So, I mean it was amazing.
Speaker 2 (01:07:26):
They talk about the shooting, the dying quail and everything.
I mean, if you looked at it from all the
kicks that he's made this year and you see that one,
just kind of yeah, you don't just die over the
cross for sure.
Speaker 6 (01:07:37):
Yeah, it was wild Stone.
Speaker 7 (01:07:39):
I wanted to ask you, obviously we've gone over quite
a bit all the numbers of the yards, the records,
you know, all the accolades, the awards. I think one
of the greatest privileges and fun things about getting to
see you play every game and be a part of
witnessing your development and as a quarterback has been like
(01:08:03):
the things that aren't in those numbers, like seeing you,
like the way you can command the offense kind of
football IQ, the way you're able to check things, kind
of direct your teammates. Coming into your senior year, I
would like you to kind of talk about it, Describe
a little bit of that dynamic with you know, Rico Gone,
Chase Gone, you know Nick's logic, some of your targets.
(01:08:27):
Of course, a lot of people were wondering, oh, you
know it's new new receiving core, new new you know,
new weapons for Stone. What was that like for you
to have that additional role besides just being the quarterback
and directing the team, and also kind of how are
you able to, I guess compartmentalize like this is what
(01:08:48):
I need to do to make the team run, but
this is also what I need to do to make
sure these guys know what it's going to take to
get that state title.
Speaker 11 (01:08:57):
Yeah, I mean I think I was.
Speaker 8 (01:08:58):
I mean I was blessed, you know, by God to
come in to mcdevin and be the opportunity that I
had to start as a freshman, and you know, have
the guys that I had on the way, like I
got here in Riley Robel and Mario easter Lee and
Rico and all those guys were like firm players on
the team and I just got to come in and
you know, I just got to be a game manager
and get it out and do whatever.
Speaker 3 (01:09:17):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:09:17):
So this year was a little different. Like I knew
this year there was gonna be some times where I
had to do more than you know, I've done in
the past years.
Speaker 11 (01:09:23):
And you know, the people, I mean, they were right.
Speaker 1 (01:09:24):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:09:24):
We had a young group of receivers and like we
did have a lot of bumps. You know, we had
a lot of hills in the road in the offseason
and some things we had to work out even during
the season, you know, even mid game, like in between players,
I would have to tell receivers how they got to
run that route the next time. But yeah, I think,
you know, it developed me as a person and as
a leader this year, just because of the young guys
that we got to deal with and you know, having
(01:09:48):
to focus their chaos sometimes with how much energy they have.
Speaker 11 (01:09:52):
But you know, it was it was so fun.
Speaker 8 (01:09:54):
I mean, I won't take it back for anything, you know,
dealing with these guys this year it was the best.
I mean, all the experience, just going up to state college,
just doing everything, going on the road so much in
the playoffs was fun. You know, just going into people's
houses and just beating them there.
Speaker 11 (01:10:07):
It was.
Speaker 8 (01:10:08):
There's nothing like it. And so yeah, it was just
blessed for this year and these guys.
Speaker 7 (01:10:13):
And kind of following up on that, you know, over
the sixteen games, there were so many different people that
kind of had their moment or moments, I should say,
and you know, we as you know, the broadcasters or
people around the team. You know, obviously you know Domo
had an unbelievable year, Johntay had an unbelievable year. But
(01:10:33):
we talked about this with coach Weck earlier. I thought
it was just kind of, you know, poetic almost In
the state championship game, pre game, as we're getting ready
to watch you guys kick it off, talked about the
two rosters, all the stars, all the athletes. You know,
you and Samaje Beals are receiving corps. They're receiving corps.
(01:10:54):
Just all the athletes State championships or championships.
Speaker 6 (01:10:58):
At any level.
Speaker 7 (01:10:58):
Often Er decided by I maybe what you would call
like role players or complimentary guys and lo and behold
that night. So many guys made great plays, but in
big moments. Gauge Ruth and Liam Fuller, can you talk
about some of those moments late in the game where
you were just so calm and you had the confidence
(01:11:20):
and all of your guys, not just one or two guys.
Speaker 11 (01:11:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:11:24):
I mean, especially when you're playing like good teams. I
watch a lot of film, like you know they're gonna
do things to take away some of your athletes. Like so,
I mean, we couldn't go to Domo and John say
the whole game. We couldn't give the ball to Swoop
and expect him to break ten guys off and go
run to the house every single time. So yeah, I
mean when we made those play calls, I just told
Liam get ready a couple of times and he was
(01:11:44):
ready and Gage, you know, Gage actually called that. He
said so and I'm like I want it, and so
I was like, all right, go make a play. So
once he told me that, you know, the same thing
happened with Domo. I mean the State college game. I
could tell Domo was on another level that game for
some reason. And one time in the end zone we
had a play call to the other side. He was
really just a decoy backside. He was like stone giving
(01:12:06):
it and I was like, all right, run feed. So
I threw it, made a catch, run from the touchdown,
you know. So you know, it's just I think as
a quarterback, you just got to believe your guys are
rather than their guys. At some point at the end
of the day, it comes down to one on one matchups,
and you know, I'm gonna give my guys a chance.
Speaker 2 (01:12:20):
Every time you mentioned the word more, you know, having
to do more this year because of the receiving core
and all that. I'm gonna talk a little bit about
it a game stat wise that you actually did less
and that was Pine Richland, I mean, and they were
just bounding the termined. They were not gonna, you know,
let you throw the football, and so the running game
was just, you know, incredible. But five completions and I
(01:12:41):
think I will always, as long as I have a memory,
will always remember that such big completions. The one was
on the screen pass to Maurice, but two to John
Tay that were just you know, along the sidelines, over
defenders and everything. You just had to like really lay
it in there, just just talk a little.
Speaker 6 (01:12:58):
Bit of it.
Speaker 2 (01:12:58):
I mean, you're gonna take those things away, I mean,
you know with you. I mean they were just some
great throws, only five completions, but really huge.
Speaker 11 (01:13:08):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:13:08):
I mean, I think that's the beautiful thing about football.
It's like, no matter what type of game it is,
you have, no matter who you are, you have the
chance to make a big play that impacts the game.
And so, I mean that game was the coldest I
think I've ever been. It was I think we looked
up and it was like fifteen degrees.
Speaker 3 (01:13:23):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:13:24):
Yeah, the cold and the wind obviously worked all quarterbacks drive.
But but yeah, so, I mean we knew we were
gonna We saw that we could run the Balltom and
film the whole week. So we were gonna come in
there and we were gonna give a suit the ball
a lot. We were gonna reach the ball a lot,
and they made great plays. Our line was playing great,
So we're just gonna keep feeding them as much as
we could. And then you know, when the time came,
you know, I was gonna make a play and our
receivers are gonna make a play. And you know, like
(01:13:45):
the last touchdown to john Sey, that was a run play.
It was just I saw something, I checked it, and
it was a touchdown because Johnson, me and him worked
that chemistry throughout the whole summer. So yeah, I mean,
I think that's the great thing about football is even
when you're you know, not able to do a lot,
because as the other team stopping, you still have the
chance to make big impact plays.
Speaker 2 (01:14:03):
Do do your eyes light up? Let's go to the
seam route to Johntay and that game. Do your eyes
light up when you get up there and see that
maybe the safety went to the bathroom or something like that. Yeah,
so there's nobody in the secondary. H Do you ever
do any head motions or anything to each other that
that you guys both see it?
Speaker 11 (01:14:20):
Or yeah?
Speaker 8 (01:14:20):
I mean, I guess I can give away the secrets
now because I don't have to play high school football again.
But but yeah, I mean usually our that route is Tennessee.
You know, I look over at Johntay, Haven't running a
slot feed and Gage runs a history on the outside.
I usually see that when there's one high so I
know I can read that corner, just make the corner
come down the hitch and then get Johntay. But you know,
I mean I made a lot of dummy calls this year.
(01:14:40):
Like there were a couple of times where we had
a run play but I saw Domo backside. I saw
their linebacker was looking at Domo weird, So I knew
that they were going to try to bracket him. So
I could just make a dummy call at a Domo
and then get that linebacker out there. Happening against East
one time and we got a big game. And so,
uh yeah, I think that's the thing that I've learned
throughout my years. Uh you know, did a little bit
(01:15:02):
of my sophomore year, a good bit of my junior year,
and then this year a lot just beating teams with
you know, my mind and the stuff you do during
the week in the film room. And so yeah, to
answer your question, I get very excited when I see
something that I can change during the offense or during
the game. And a lot of times, I mean if
I see something to play before, I mean, this happens
a lot. I just go over to WEC and I'm like,
let's run this and by now he trusts me. So
(01:15:24):
I mean, I mean the championship game, Domino's touchdown that
he was wide open, that was something that I told Weck,
but that wasn't a call. They just messed something up
on defense and we made the most of it. But yeah,
I mean me and Wegg had a great relationship that
I could just tell him what I see and he
believes me and he trusts me and to go do it.
Speaker 4 (01:15:44):
Stan Witch was sweeter getting whack that championship two years
ago or walking off on your senior year with the
state championship.
Speaker 11 (01:15:51):
That's a good question.
Speaker 8 (01:15:54):
I would have to say, Man, that's hard because there's
two sides to it. So the Alcova my freshman year
always looked at like if I didn't throw that pick six,
we might have won. So I always that hurt me
a lot, So that fueled me all off season. And
then we came back and beat the same team, which
that makes it even more special, and got wec's first one.
But then you know, the Dallas game happened, and so
(01:16:17):
that was probably the worst loss in mcdeviit history.
Speaker 11 (01:16:19):
Just say it as it is.
Speaker 8 (01:16:21):
But and you know, I could blame that on myself
easily too, because you're the quarterback, like you can make
plays whenever it is, and so you know, come back
the next year and then when it that's pretty special too.
I would have to say, I think I have to
say twenty two twenty four was sick though it's hard.
I mean, they're both I could take either of them.
Speaker 2 (01:16:40):
So what kind of different Twenty two You could celebrate
on the sidelines for the last what ten minutes fifteen
minutes clock, and it was like a whole different thing.
You were I was at home watching, but you were
certainly celebrating on it. And for all you guys this
one in twenty four it was spontaneous, which I to.
Speaker 8 (01:16:58):
Me, actually, no, I lied, twenty four was better? What
am I talking about it? Twenty four was way better? Yeah,
just because of the way it ended. And you know,
I also didn't throw three picks in twenty four. I
threw the three picks in twenty two, which wasn't uh
wasn't fun. So yeah, yeah, I changed my answer.
Speaker 2 (01:17:14):
So I like to spot in eighty twenty four.
Speaker 11 (01:17:15):
You know, yeah, twenty four was better.
Speaker 4 (01:17:19):
Stan talk about sometimes you have to come on and
be an emergency punter. Obviously with Grella going down there
a little bit there in the playoffs. Do you like
coming in and punting in that situation?
Speaker 6 (01:17:29):
Yeah?
Speaker 11 (01:17:30):
Sometimes?
Speaker 8 (01:17:30):
I mean I called Matt Johnson because he used to
do this thing on a punt where like he would
roll out to the right and see if he could
do it, if he could run for the first down.
And one time I told Wacky that I was talking
to him about it, and then he'd never let me
punt again. So that was. But to answer your question
from earlier about how we were okay with sometimes like
a kick a field goal, we were never okay with
len aid and punt. So me and Wegg would have
(01:17:53):
some heated arguments about punting. That's the only field gool
we could take. But punting we never never had fun
in doing that.
Speaker 7 (01:17:59):
Stone and Lucas you can jump back into. But kind
of picking up on that twenty twenty two versus twenty
twenty four question, I want to throw another little bit
into that, and that is obviously twenty twenty two was
such a dominant you know in the Keystone Division. You
guys just were dominating people and all equippa. Like you said,
(01:18:22):
it was almost like a mission. It was like a
collision course that everyone was waiting for. That rematch twenty
twenty four was a little bit of a different dynamic
because we had the Dallas loss, So you know, like
the people that aren't fond of McDevitt, let's just say,
you know, it was like those ozards were circling like
they loved that. Yeah, you know, they had that to
(01:18:43):
enjoy the whole summer in the off season. So then
coming in, you know, we've got the whole move up
to the Commonwealth thing with the Commonwealth schedule, coming off
the Dallas loss and then the five A, all those different
dynamics came into play. What was that like for you
guys as far as how did that affect your enjoyment
(01:19:03):
of the season and what was it like with the
social media aspect of what you guys hear from people
on social media and everything till.
Speaker 5 (01:19:12):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:19:12):
Yeah, you know, I think playing in the Commonwealth made
it up. You know, it made a lot more fun.
I think when we played Commer on the Valley, me
and Lucas were talking. We were like, this is what
you know the Commonwealth is going to be about, Like
it's going to be a pack game. Uh, They're going
to be coming out here trying to be us because
we're MCDVID. They haven't played us in a while, their
Super Bowl all this, so it was it was so
much fun. Playing in the Comonwealth was so much fun.
(01:19:33):
Going to State College, I mean that environment was crazy,
and just to have to go against that all game,
you know. I remember the State College game was like
the second drive their bands right there and I'm screaming
the play call out in the huddle.
Speaker 11 (01:19:45):
I have to say like.
Speaker 8 (01:19:46):
Three times screaming because no one can hear me. So yeah,
playing the Comonwealth made it, uh, made it way more fun.
Speaker 11 (01:19:52):
And then five A.
Speaker 8 (01:19:53):
But I think you could argue the past couple of
years in four A was just as hard as five
A this year. I think playing out coup any of
those years. They were a really good team. They could
have competed in any any division. But the social media aspect,
I mean, I think that just made it all more fun.
It's you know, when you make mistakes, like when we
lose to Harrisburger gets blasted even more. When you lose
(01:20:14):
State College, you get blasted evenymore. Like I remember after
the State College game, I look at my Instagram the
next morning, I have comments from all these state college
people about how I suck, how I'm all this. I'm
like I said, I had seven touchdowns against you guys,
but you know, obviously you can't respond to them or
nothing like that. But you know, I think all that
just made this year even more special.
Speaker 2 (01:20:33):
I'm glad that you guys took away and then landed
throw it in here, but I'm glad you guys took away.
Like going to state college. I mean, tens of thousands
of kids they play high school football are never going
to have the privilege of playing a game at a
venue like that. The stadiums, the fields underground, and it's
got all these bricks and everything. You can make one
of those football movies from prison and not have to
(01:20:57):
change anything about that, having that brick wall around and everything.
But you know, I'm glad that you guys don't take
that for granted, the privilege it is to go to
place like that, play those kind of competitions, in those
kind of kind of games.
Speaker 9 (01:21:09):
Yeah, we enjoyed all that atmosphere, and like Stone said,
we would sit there and just talk about it and
be like, if you really think about it, like a
bunch of kids don't get this opportunity to play in
front of big crowds like this as high school athletes
and just have all the praise that we got, and
I mean playing teams in Commonwealth like CD and Harrisburg
and all these teams that I grew up playing or
played for back then. It was just it just made
(01:21:29):
it that much sweeter and that much better to get
it done and have those two losses and like put
that chip on our shoulder and just push us through
the rest of the year.
Speaker 2 (01:21:37):
A lot of talk like final four basketball, and then
you get through the final four, you get to the
championship game. Sometimes it's harder to get there, and once
you're in the championship game, it's just okay.
Speaker 11 (01:21:48):
It's kind of That's what I mean.
Speaker 8 (01:21:50):
We said that, me and Lucas when we were during
this pintmers of the week, We were like, I want
to say because it sounds bad, but we were kind
of scared for that game just because of Howard ended
the year before. Were like, I didn't tell any of
the young guys, but I was a little scared just
because of like I know how this could be the
last one. Like I was just I remember saying to
some of them, I was like, bro, just get through
this week, and like, I promise next week that's ours.
(01:22:11):
Like that, we don't have to worry about that, Like,
just get through this week because obviously when you play
Pittsburgh team, you know they're gonna come out and be
ready to play. And so Piners, I mean, they were
a tough team. You know, we just found a way
to get done. And you know once we I mean
you can't really say that we knew it was gonna
be ours because it went into overtime, but we really
thought like that whole week. Like I remember even coming
out for warm up seeing them and then seeing how
(01:22:33):
our energy was, I thought, like, this game is ours
all right.
Speaker 9 (01:22:36):
Definitely after twenty twenty two, I mean we saw what
it took to win and then our heads were like
really high and like blowing up. I feel like almost
too much a little bit for that twenty twenty three season.
Speaker 6 (01:22:45):
Then just seeing all my senior guys that went out.
Speaker 9 (01:22:47):
That year and just feeling like how they felt to
go out like that for the last game and Stiem
are definitely really nervous going into Pine Rischam, but the
energy we had that game. When we came out and
the music was playing, We're all like just super turning.
Speaker 6 (01:22:58):
It was cold, and it just felt really good.
Speaker 9 (01:23:00):
Even during like the captains we were just sitting there
like looking them dead in their eyes, like we're gonna
come and like hit your guys in the face. I
promise our guys over years, any day of the week. Like,
it just felt really good at the end of the
season to do what we did.
Speaker 4 (01:23:12):
Speaking of crazy environments done, you're about ready to head
off and play in those SEC environments down here. Talk
a little bit about heading off to Kentucky and playing
in those environments.
Speaker 8 (01:23:22):
Yeah, yeah, I mean I think, you know, I always
wanted to play in the SEC, Like, no matter what
people say, I do think the SEC is way above
you know, any other conference, respectfully to the Big Ten.
But but I think the competition is just like anybody
can really beat anybody in the SEC. Like we beat
Old Miss this year and we had no business being
Old Miss. So Vandy beat Alabama, they had no no
(01:23:43):
business being Alabama. So super exciting for that. The schedulers
came out the other day, you know, we go we
go to Georgia, we go to South Carolina. We played
Texas Tennessee. So my family's super pumped about it just
because they want to go and exploit the SEC towns.
And uh, you know, super excited. Just ready to get there,
go through springball. I'm just excited to go compete. I
(01:24:04):
mean I never was one for the recruiting process. That's
why I got mine done pretty early. Well, the college
world's crazy. I mean, it changes on you in a
in a heartbeat. You know, I committed. My coach went
to Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Now he's doing great there and
talks for head coaching jobs in the NFL, like the
new offense cordnerator we got. But it's really been coach toops.
(01:24:26):
I mean, the head coach there, he's been had my
back through everything. I told him I had his back
through everything. You know, I was gonna come regardless if
he's there. So yeah, I'm just ready to go compete,
and you know, just be up there with the guys
and just get into my new environment.
Speaker 4 (01:24:39):
You guys should have beat Georgia this year too.
Speaker 8 (01:24:41):
Yeah, we should have the kind of that pick six.
And mean, I mean, if you think like SEC, you
really just need to win. I mean if you go
out the season with three losses, you have a chance
to get in the playoffs. So it's you know, I
think that's one thing that the SEC has above the
Big Ten is that you know, with the competition, they
can lose three games and still like Albam almost made
it with three losses and.
Speaker 11 (01:25:02):
Some people think they should.
Speaker 8 (01:25:04):
But but yeah, I think, you know, I'm ready for
the SEC.
Speaker 4 (01:25:08):
Lucas talk about wrestling at buck Now, I assume you're
done with football, you'd still kind of have that edge
to play some football there possibly.
Speaker 6 (01:25:15):
Yeah, I mean, I'm pretty sure I'm done with football.
Speaker 9 (01:25:17):
I'm excited to see what buck Now brings me throughout
the rest of my career and life throughout wrestling. Then
I feel like the competition is definitely gonna be tough,
and it's definitely gonna be a big step up to
Wrestle Division one with those guys, and yeah, I mean,
it's gonna be fun though, and I'm super excited to
see what it's like at Bucknell on the campus and
how everything goes.
Speaker 4 (01:25:35):
Beautiful campus up there, for.
Speaker 7 (01:25:36):
Sure, Stone and Lucas and if JJ or Land and
if you want to jump in too on this one,
but We talked with coach Wector towards the end about
just you know, kind of being able to take some
time to relax over the holidays and things. Obviously, Lucas
you're going to be wrestling and Land and you're going
to be wrestling and Stone. You're going to be getting
(01:25:58):
ready to head off to UK here sooner than later,
which we can also talk about. But as a team,
like what part of the I guess kind of celebrate
celebratory things are you looking forward to. I know the
team's going to be going to the Capitol again. I know,
you know you're going to be recognized, you know at
a basketball game, you know, stuff with the Philadelphia Eagles,
(01:26:21):
and then of course you know there'll be a banquet
of some sort probably coming up in February March. What
all are you guys looking forward to.
Speaker 9 (01:26:30):
I mean, I feel like we always look forward to
the Capitol because you get to leave score early and
dress up nice and go in and then just see
like what it's like in the Capitol and be with
all your brothers for one last time and like just
feel like all the like praise that you get for
being state champions.
Speaker 6 (01:26:44):
And the rings are also very nice.
Speaker 8 (01:26:46):
Too, So yeah, I think he hit on it when
he said, just like we just want to hang out
with our guys. I mean, it's really that's That's the
one like thing about football that when I'm done playing,
I don't think I'll ever be able to get away from,
which is why I'll probably go into coaching or something
like that, because the locker room feel there's really I mean,
there's nothing like it. There's nothing like just being able
to hang out with your guys like all the time
(01:27:06):
and just going through all these memories with them and
you know, the ups and downs and stuff, and so
you know, going to the Capitol with everybody will be fun.
Just opening the rings, whether with everybody will be fun.
I mean, it's just it's what you get to do
when you win it off. So it's it's everything will
be We'll just take it all in for the last
time and you know, have these young guys experience it.
Speaker 12 (01:27:29):
I'm really excited to get those rings. You know, it's
definitely something that we all worked for and something that
motivated all of us all year long.
Speaker 6 (01:27:38):
Got it, doubt Yeah, I said it for my ring.
Speaker 10 (01:27:41):
I didn't get one when you guys won twenty two
since I transferred, and uh, it stuck with me since
last year since we lost in Dallas, so I wanted
to get mine this year.
Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
I'm glad you brought up about the you know, just
wanting to hang with the guys, hang with your teammates everything. Again,
this is my seventeenth year of doing this. I never
played football or anything like that, but in my observation,
football is really it's a brotherhood thing. And I think
of all the sports, football brings guys together more. And
I think they don't like us to use that term.
(01:28:12):
You gotta go to war each week, yeah, but it is.
It's a battle each week. Yes, I think football just
separates itself from the other sports.
Speaker 11 (01:28:20):
I think especially this year.
Speaker 8 (01:28:22):
You know, there was a couple of weeks where we knew,
like we were gonna like Carlisle. We knew coming into
the game we were probably gonna be out at the
first half. Well you know, games like CDs, games like
State College Harrisburg and all the playoff games. We were like, look,
we're gonna go on Friday and we're gonna fight until
we can't fight anymore. And you know, that's just one
of the special things about being with your guys. It's
(01:28:43):
like we all. I mean, I don't know what it
would be compared to, just because like you and all
your guys know that you're gonna go in and you're
gonna fight as hard as you possibly can, and so
there's really just nothing like that feeling. And yeah, so
the football brotherhood, it's real. It's everything that's put up to,
especially in high school. I think every team I've been on,
(01:29:04):
it's been very close. And I think this from the
teams that I've been on, I think this is the
closest team, Like we were the closest group of guys,
maybe just how the age worked out. You know, we
didn't have a lot of guys. Everybody was pretty much young,
and there was only a certain group of seniors that
really had impactful roles. So I think, you know, we
(01:29:26):
were just a really close group of guys. We had
a long season. You know, sixteen weeks is a long season,
and especially after last year's ended, we started like super early,
so you know, it was a long, like drolling year,
and I think, you know, we had to fight. You know,
I'm like, especially the young like receivers and young linemen
and stuff like that. I made them fight every practice,
(01:29:47):
like I was on them every single practice if they
would mess up, like I would be on them, Like
Wac didn't even have to say anything.
Speaker 6 (01:29:53):
This year.
Speaker 8 (01:29:53):
I was on all over them cause like I knew
what it took to get there because we did it before.
So now these young guys knowing it's in their hands
from now on.
Speaker 2 (01:30:02):
Art Art would would beat me up. If I hadn't
ansk this. We could have talked about being a war
out tune when you mentioned Carlisle was going to win
and everything, and Art and I just up in the booth.
We disagreed on that whole thing. That quarterback was so tough, yea,
And for sure Lucas is going to come to you.
He was so tough to bring down. And I think
(01:30:22):
they had was a third and fourth from the four
yard line, and they had two downs to get four yards.
Quite honestly, I didn't think we were going to stop
him if he ran it two times. And I liked
the idea of the pitch because he kept running the ball,
kept running the ball, and I thought they felt like
they could get the edge. Okay on our side of
(01:30:44):
the field. Art said, you know, they should have just
stuck with running the QB and landing. You know, fill
us in on that. I mean that that kid was tough.
Speaker 9 (01:30:52):
Yeah, we definitely had a game plan, but it just
wasn't working out. Some guys weren't flying down. But we
figured it out and something lucky might have happened that
to pull it out at them, but we got it done.
And that just shows like the pursuit that our team
had to just always figure a way to win.
Speaker 8 (01:31:07):
I think that's also partly my fault because we broke
that record and then we just stopped the game for
five minutes and did fireworks and all this stuff. They
were probably on their sideline talking about how rude it
was to them, but I agree with you they should
have gave their quarterback the balls twice more. I think
you live or died by that. But yeah, for sure,
that was the touchdown.
Speaker 7 (01:31:26):
That was the touchdown pass record that night.
Speaker 6 (01:31:28):
Yeah, wake up call too. Though.
Speaker 9 (01:31:30):
I feel like that game definitely made us realize, like
I'm wealth every week, you need to stay locked in
as much for any of the big games as much
as the teams that you might like not think.
Speaker 6 (01:31:40):
Are going to be as good.
Speaker 8 (01:31:41):
That was a just crazy game. It was like it
was something out of a bad movie. It was almost
like Dallas because it was.
Speaker 11 (01:31:45):
Like the little rain, like gloomy night like.
Speaker 8 (01:31:48):
It was just we were just lucky to get out
of there honestly with a win.
Speaker 11 (01:31:53):
So yeah, that was crazy.
Speaker 4 (01:31:55):
Son. We sit up there in the press box sometimes
and I watch you through the football and it amazes me.
I mean, you really throw it far, obviously, how far
can you throw football? Just just guessing.
Speaker 8 (01:32:05):
Uh, I had seventy in practice one time this year.
I've never I haven't got above that yet, but I'm
sure it was one of those win windy days. And
McDevitt they're on the field. I could probably hit a
little bit more than that, I guess.
Speaker 7 (01:32:17):
Just kind of picking back up on the whole what
you guys were talking about about the closeness of your
team and how tight knit this group was. The whole
thing you hear people say when they're trying to win
championships is you know, it's about the It's about the journey.
It's not about the destination or it's like when you're
climbing a mountain. It's like about the experience, not necessarily
just when you stand on top of the mountain. But
(01:32:40):
Coach Wector, I think it was the week. Uh it
was after the Pine Richland game when you guys were
preparing for Roman Catholic one of the practices. Uh when
I when I happen to hear him talking to you
guys at the end, I remember him looking at all
you guys and he just said, you know, enjoy the moment.
You know, take a look around, you know, take it
all in and enjoy the moment. And what you guys
(01:33:01):
are saying tonight just sort of reminded me of that.
It seems like you guys were doing that all along,
like every week, whether it was you know, a big
game like Harrisburg or whether you were traveling to Chambersburg
on a Friday night or whatever. Like this group really
seemed to like embrace the daily together and the weekly together.
Speaker 9 (01:33:22):
Yeah, I feel like Coach Wig definitely hit on the
head with the embrace at part because we've been He's
been there before, Me and Stone have been there before,
Landon was there before. Like it really is like there's
nothing else like it, and it just feels so good.
So like if you just sit there and like take
it in more than just like letting it fly by
It just like helps you understand how much more meaningful
it is to like not just the team, but for
the organization and for all the fans and everybody who
(01:33:43):
comes down and watches, and how much they really care
about like what you guys are doing on the field.
Speaker 2 (01:33:48):
Yeah, JJ, jump back in here a second, OK, if
you could all on it. So two incredible running backs,
you know very even uh just I mean swoops is ridiculous.
You just cannot bring him down. What kind of satisfaction
and landing to a kind of satisfaction as O lineman
do you have? You know, seeing these guys break it,
see seeing him break tackles, see him running for forty
(01:34:09):
five fifty yards, breaking a game open. You know what
does that do for you guys? I mean, because you
guys are in the mud so to speak, and that
you're not in the glory positions.
Speaker 10 (01:34:19):
Yeah, it kind of like hypes us up. You know,
like when a player gets called your side, you know,
like the blocks on you. So it's like on your
job to like make sure you're running back it's a
good run, and like it's up to him, like you
just have to get up to the second level and
it's on your running back to like score a get
past like the safeties.
Speaker 12 (01:34:31):
Uh, exactly what JJ said. I mean, it's when you
hear plays coming to your side. It's that plays on
your back and like you need to pick up for
you know, a little brother back there running the ball,
and especially you know, making sure recent swoops work. Some
of the hardest workers on the team, and they deserve
to get good blocks and good runs every game.
Speaker 2 (01:34:52):
Absolutely, do you guys ever do any of those lookout
blocks where they blow by and you just holler for Stone.
Speaker 6 (01:34:58):
To look out.
Speaker 11 (01:35:00):
Nah, stop it, stop it, hold on.
Speaker 8 (01:35:06):
There was a couple of times that JJ just decided
not to even touch his guy, okay.
Speaker 11 (01:35:11):
So I don't know if you remember. There was a
couple time pirmers and the DN.
Speaker 8 (01:35:14):
Had me by my legs, okay, and I just somehow
manage to throw a lot of hout stop it.
Speaker 11 (01:35:19):
No, no, no, it doesn't matter.
Speaker 8 (01:35:21):
The guy was on JJ's face and he just let
him go right by him. But uh, you know, he
does good enough that I can let a couple of
those slide. But Braydon Wector definitely did not let a
couple of those slide. He had a couple of choice
things to say. He probably threw his tablet or whatever
he had in his hand on the sideline and started
screaming at whoever you could find nearest to him.
Speaker 2 (01:35:41):
You guys will appreciate this. That came out of a
basketball defense book that I when I was coaching, and
one of the other ones was cat defense. He blows by,
you say, called teammate.
Speaker 8 (01:35:52):
JJ probably did the pretty gud defense when he saw
the defender run by, and he just started praying.
Speaker 4 (01:35:58):
Well Stone and Landon though, give me your college football
picks and your Super Bowl picks as well.
Speaker 8 (01:36:03):
I got Ohio State. I think they'll beat Oregon when
they claim next and I don't know, I think it's
really anybody's game in college in the NFL. I got
the Lions.
Speaker 12 (01:36:13):
I definitely think that Oregon's gonna pull this one out
this year.
Speaker 4 (01:36:17):
Uh.
Speaker 12 (01:36:19):
I don't really watch college football too much, but Steelers
just clinched the playoffs yesterday, so they're definitely winning it
this year.
Speaker 11 (01:36:26):
This guy, Russell Wilson will stop it.
Speaker 4 (01:36:29):
Well, guys, before we let you go, give me your
favorite moment in your years at BISH and mcdeviit here.
Was it winning the state championship or that was there
a play or something, you know, an interception, possibly at
some point your first interception landed. Just give me a
play that will stick out in your mind, your favorite
play I.
Speaker 11 (01:36:44):
Ever got one go. I gotta think winning the state
ship like that was the first one.
Speaker 10 (01:36:48):
That's like it was magical, just looking around, like with
my teammates, like worked all summer.
Speaker 6 (01:36:53):
Like it was great.
Speaker 11 (01:36:54):
I might have mine this.
Speaker 8 (01:36:56):
This might not be my favorite, but I think I
might be with JJ was winning the state the senior year,
just because I got to celebrate with the guys that
were on this team and the coaches I've been with
for four years. And I also got to celebrate with
the guys that went to battle with the past couple
of years, like Rico was there. I honestly think Rico
was the first one to find me after we won,
and then Owen and Chase and Riley all of them
(01:37:16):
were on the sideline. So man's that's so challenging. I mean,
I really there could be like fifteen favorite moments, but
I think I'll have to go with that one.
Speaker 2 (01:37:27):
Lucas.
Speaker 9 (01:37:28):
Yeah, I mean, winning the state championship was definitely awesome,
But I feel like going up to the grodo. For
the senior retreat like definitely hold a special place in
my heart because we were all up there just like
praying together and talking about what we wanted to do
for this season. At the end of the day, we
all really got it done, and it just meant so
much to just be up there with like all my
teammates and for my senior year, like be able to
(01:37:49):
pray together and like drink the Holy water and see
weck and just like talk to the guys and then
at the end of the day finish it out with
the right way and what we prayed about.
Speaker 12 (01:37:57):
Landon, I definitely would want to save my interception. Just
seeing everybody you know, celebrate on the sideline was amazing
to see. But I'd have to go with the senior year,
ending it with the state championship. I mean, one couldn't
asker any other way. In my high school career.
Speaker 6 (01:38:13):
It was awesome.
Speaker 8 (01:38:13):
Actually, wait, I might have remember the first playing is
al Quaipatashaw in that long touchdown. Yeah, that might have been.
That might have been the best moment in my career.
Just what everything was like. Like even if you watch
it on huddle, you see the crowd just go like
and the lights are flicking on and off, we're all
running seventy yards to go catch him. Uh, there's like
a million of them, but I'll say that one was
(01:38:34):
really fun. And then obviously went to the stage.
Speaker 7 (01:38:36):
Hip and Lucas. You just made think of one more
thing when you mentioned about going to the grotto for
the senior retreat, Well, any of you can jump in,
you know, on this one, but that's something that I
feel like, you know, Bishop mcdavitt, it's a different, different
kind of place in many levels as anywhere else, and
it's a different kind of community, but different kind of
(01:38:58):
football program. When you come to make David, did you guys,
did you guys have any idea like did the seniors
before you ever talk about like that groad or retreat
or some of the things like that.
Speaker 6 (01:39:08):
That you did.
Speaker 7 (01:39:09):
This school does that this team does under coach Reactor.
Speaker 9 (01:39:12):
I mean no, I feel like the seniors before us
kept it a really good secret, which I think they should.
I mean, it's definitely something really special and whenever you
get to like witness it and be a part of it,
it's awesome. So just keeping the secret and having that
like hype towards it just makes it even that much better.
Speaker 12 (01:39:27):
Yeah, the seniors in the past year's definitely done an
amazing job keeping a secret. I mean we had no
clue like what we were gonna do until like I
want to say it probably like the day of or
the day before.
Speaker 6 (01:39:40):
But it was just an amazing experience. Absolutely. Yeah.
Speaker 10 (01:39:45):
Like they said, like the seniors kept it pretty like secret.
I didn't know until the beginning of this year. Like
we were going to the grod and everything and it
was snicey know. After that, we went seniors eat breakfast
also together and we just came back.
Speaker 6 (01:39:55):
It was like perfect.
Speaker 11 (01:39:58):
Yeah, well I got two things.
Speaker 3 (01:39:59):
One.
Speaker 8 (01:40:00):
I was the one that had to pick the breakfast
spot after the grotto, and I think I made him
well some people, so half the people liked loved it.
And it was cheap food. We got like a couple
of pancakes for like four dollars.
Speaker 11 (01:40:12):
But it was the spot. Oh my gosh. It was
some like little like whole whole the wall store in Maryland,
like yeah, because we were starving. We didn't you all day.
We were there for a while. But I would say,
mcdebit like you hit on it.
Speaker 8 (01:40:27):
Mcdevit is different I think you don't get the experience
that you get at mcdebitt. And for me, I mean
I could say that easily because I went through like
try to get to any high school that would give
me a chance to play, and everybody had their quarterback already,
even the midget teams. I had to play different positions.
So coming here, you know, I always bring back to
this moment. Me and WEG had a zoom call like
the first day we uh second day, we got in
(01:40:48):
contact and he was like, you're gonna start as a
freshman and we're gonna go to state championship, and you know,
he was right with like all of it, Like everything
Wex said he's been right about for me. So I mean,
We's you know, I this's not the question you asked,
but Weck's been just amazing. I mean he's been so
impactful in my life. I would definitely would not be
here where I'm going or where I've been today without WHC.
(01:41:11):
And also him calling somebody pass plays because I know
in the past years, you know, Matt Johnson still brings
it up to me about how WEC would never call
pass play in the red zone for him, So Whack
blessed me with a couple of those.
Speaker 11 (01:41:22):
But mcdevan is different.
Speaker 8 (01:41:23):
I mean from the faculty, from Principal Harper, the whole
way down, so you know, just the freshmen that come in,
you know, it's just like everybody, like it's really a family,
like everybody loves everybody. You know, I'm gonna miss this
place when I leave, you know, because obviously college probably
won't be like it, just because it's such a community
in debit community like all the parents and everybody. I mean,
(01:41:45):
I'm just forever grateful to be you know, I have
a part in this mcdevit family, and you know, I'll
forever be considered. There's no doubt in my mind that
I'll forever come back. And you know, maybe one day, coach,
you know, it would be hilarious that would happen. But
but yeah, McDavid's it's been the greatest blessing God's ever
given me to come here.
Speaker 2 (01:42:03):
I'm gonna ask you guys all in general, but Stone specific.
But I'll ask you guys all yeap, give you a
minute to think about it, because I already asked Stone
this the other week. But what what do you want
to leave behind your teammates, younger guys. What what do
you want to leave? What do you want to tell him?
You stone specifically, what do you want to tell Sebastian.
Speaker 11 (01:42:21):
I'm gonna tell Sabastian, you know, leave your own legacy.
Speaker 4 (01:42:24):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:42:25):
You know, obviously he's going to be compared to me.
I mean, there's no doubt about it. And Sebastian is
a great player. He's going to be a great player
for mcdevin the next couple of years. But he's not
going to be able to do some of the things
I did because he's not gonna be able to play
as long like I got all four years and I
got great guys for four years.
Speaker 11 (01:42:41):
Especially, is gonna have to.
Speaker 8 (01:42:41):
Take over with this young team that he's good friends with,
and you know, he has a real good shot. You know,
they have a good shot next year to be able
to do it again. And you know, like I told Sebastian,
I was like, just go win, just do whatever you
kind of go win. You know, I learned that this
year too, Like you know, lowered Dolphin game. There were
some games where you I'm going to hand the ball
off for three great place and if we don't get
a first time we're gonna punt, you know. So it's
(01:43:03):
like you gotta be to play mcdebvis. You gotta be
a selfless quarterback, which is crazy to say because of
all this freaking like records and stuff that got But
there's some like there's some times where you know, especially
next year, they're gonna have Stoop and Reese in the backfield,
and Rome is gonna be better next year too, and
they're gonna have those three guys in the middle are
still gonna be there. So he's gonna have to be
selfless at some point, you know, and hand the ball off.
(01:43:24):
But Sebastian is gonna be a great player, I have
no doubt about it. There's a lot of young guys
that are gonna be great players on that team, you know.
I'm just gonna tell Sabastian, you know, work as hard
as you can, and quarterback, you gotta be one of
the hardest working guys on the team, if not the hardest.
So you know, just go create your own legacy. Work
as hard as you can, and you know, great things
will happen for him. I got no doubt that, you know.
And Sabastian is a great kid. He works super hard,
(01:43:44):
so I got no doubt that he will succeed.
Speaker 7 (01:43:47):
The other guys Lucas, Yeah, Tron, Dennis and the rest
of the guys coming back.
Speaker 9 (01:43:52):
What are you yeah, tell all the guys work their
hardest to keep giving back to the program because, like
Stone said, I mean, coach Weiss such a great guy.
And then and the culture of mcdevit just like any
other school I've ever been to, and it just it's
truly amazing. So I would just tell them to go
not too cocky into this next year and bring home
another state chip so that the mc mcdevonn name just
(01:44:12):
keeps getting more popular and they just keep bringing the
culture and hype up and mcdebit and prove the haters wrong.
Speaker 3 (01:44:20):
You know.
Speaker 12 (01:44:21):
I would just really want the younger guys to you know,
just enjoy it. I mean just really take the time
to enjoy it and just realize that they are at
they have an amazing opportunity, amazing coaches and amazing chances
to to go win again and just keep going.
Speaker 7 (01:44:39):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (01:44:41):
Yeah, like well, Linnoson, enjoy it.
Speaker 10 (01:44:42):
I wish I would have started to hear my freshman year,
but I didn't. But enjoy your last However, however many
years you have least enjoy it because uh not everyone
gets to experience this.
Speaker 4 (01:44:52):
Well, guys, you have three guys sitting here in the
studio with you to live and die with mcdebit football
every Friday night. We don't get paid much to do it.
We just love showing up and supporting you guys. So
I can tell you right now, winning the state championship
was like the best Christmas gift you can give. Any
of this.
Speaker 8 (01:45:07):
We appreciate you guys also for all the sports and
everything you guys do for me, Devin in the community.
I mean, my mom is your guys' biggest fan, and
I seriously mean that, you know, so she wanted to
say hi and just thank you for everything you guys
done over the four years.
Speaker 11 (01:45:22):
And she would definitely keep listening. I promise that.
Speaker 9 (01:45:24):
So yeah, and then my dad sits in his truck
and listens to all the podcasts, so he definitely appreciates
what all you guys do. And he'll come and be like, look,
you hear what they're talking about you on the podcast,
And I mean, I just appreciate what all you guys
do too, And it just meant even that much more
to us and push us that much more to like
get it done for not just only you guys, but
like everybody that puts that time and sacrifice in, like
the coaches and all that, just for even if it's
(01:45:45):
a little paid, just just because they support us so
much and it just means so much.
Speaker 12 (01:45:49):
Yeah, just like, really, thank you, guys. No, my girlfriend's grandma,
she listens to the game every game on the radio,
and her brothers and sisters listen to it on the doing.
All I ever hear is just you guys are doing
a great job. It's all so thank you, guys.
Speaker 4 (01:46:05):
Thank you.
Speaker 7 (01:46:07):
One more thing before we let you guys go. Uh,
you know one other special thing that was kind of
again poetic with the way the season went down. Rocko Ortensio.
You know, Rock Ortensio Steam for those of you out
there listen obviously no Rocko Ortensia, Steam of rock O Ortensia.
One of the most you know, generous, amazing human beings
(01:46:30):
who gave so much to so many, not chest Bishop mcdebitt,
but you know, obviously this being a mcdebit podcast. He
uh really, he loves helping people. He passed away this
year during the season, and the football program in the
high school itself was able to honor him. At that
(01:46:51):
lower it often playoff game, the first playoff game, so
you know, when we talk about you know, it was
maybe it was good they didn't have the buye. I
felt like it was kind of just like another sign
that we had that game that night and you guys
were able to take out for the coin toss, come
into the stadium with the number seventy two or tenzio
jersey and kind of honor him.
Speaker 8 (01:47:12):
Yeah, I mean I felt I mean I felt personally
just blessed to be able to take his jersey out
first off.
Speaker 11 (01:47:17):
And you know, Rocco.
Speaker 8 (01:47:19):
I actually had a decent relationship with Rocco, you know,
I mean he was a older guy when I met him,
but still I got to talk to him. I visited
him like five times with d Weak and a couple
other people, and then he came to my commitment party too,
So it was nice that he got to come and
he met my family and everybody and just talked to
and he's just I mean, he's just a great human being.
He was a great human being, you know, for everything
he has just to be as humble and a great
(01:47:41):
human as he was, and everything he did for mcdevit,
I mean, he's the number one mcdevith fan. You know,
he always told me that everything he did he would
listen to. He would listen to you guys talk on
Friday night, no matter what.
Speaker 11 (01:47:53):
So you know, it sucks.
Speaker 8 (01:47:54):
The last game he probably heard was the state college game,
so you know, we kind of thought about that, and
we all got to.
Speaker 11 (01:47:59):
Go to his funeral, which was awesome.
Speaker 8 (01:48:01):
And then you know, I really think that was God,
God putting us on the path, you know, because right
when that happened Lower Dolphin we played a great game,
and then Mccansburg we got through it. But then those
next three weeks after that, that was the best something
mcdevit football I've ever played.
Speaker 5 (01:48:17):
Like.
Speaker 8 (01:48:18):
We were a full team, full stride, you know, just
playing for each other, playing for Rocco, and it's just awesome.
You know that the season he passed away, we got
to finish it off with the state championship for him,
and you know, we texted in the group chat, you
know me, and while we're talking, he was like, do
you want to wear We got to wear blue jerseys,
but we can wear blue and blue or blowing gold.
I was like, let's go blowing gold for you know,
like Rocco and obviously all the older people in mcdeviit
(01:48:40):
that missed the blue on gold. Obviously it's not as
big of a thing anymore with these guys. But yeah,
you know, we kept saying, we're gonna do it for Rocco.
Speaker 11 (01:48:47):
We're gonna do it for Rocco. We're gonna do it Rocco.
Speaker 8 (01:48:49):
And you know, we got it done, which was amazing,
and we're gonna honor him a little bit on the ring.
Speaker 6 (01:48:53):
You know.
Speaker 8 (01:48:54):
I was designed that a little bit Connor Marsco and
everybody else, but you know, yeah, he was a great
human and then we're just glad that we got to, uh,
you know, do this for him.
Speaker 11 (01:49:03):
At the end of it.
Speaker 2 (01:49:04):
I appreciate the fact that you said about how I
listened to us and I was told that one of
the games was going to be on TV, and whoever
was taking care of him said, hey, it's on TV.
He said, no, I want to listen to the guys.
Speaker 6 (01:49:14):
Yeah.
Speaker 11 (01:49:15):
Yeah, he loved you guys.
Speaker 4 (01:49:17):
Yeah, we get slightly passionate on the air when mcdebit's score.
Speaker 8 (01:49:21):
Geta and we don't have any like I remember this
is a way off topic, but so the Mechanicsburg game
and a couple of other games, like I had family
members and stuff listening to the broadcast and live streams,
and they would go all for mcdiva football, like they
would wait for us to like especially I remember I
had a couple of family members watching the Pirates and game.
They were like they were talking trash on you the
whole game, like they were waiting until you made that
(01:49:43):
last throw to say something. But you know, that's just
what that's what comes with playing for mcdebit. I mean,
it's just you're gonna be held to high standard.
Speaker 6 (01:49:50):
But yeah, I mean to bring it back to rock.
Speaker 9 (01:49:53):
It was just like super It was just such an
awesome moment to like, she's still next to me, and
when I had the cross and he had his jersey,
and I just see throughout my four years mcdebick how
much his family and him like give back to mcdevin,
how much they really do care. And being at the
funeral was just another part of the story that brought
us guys together because we were all there sitting next
to each other just knowing.
Speaker 6 (01:50:11):
How much of a special guy.
Speaker 9 (01:50:12):
He was to all these people that were also there
with us, and to get it done even before the
state championship game.
Speaker 6 (01:50:18):
I bet some of these guys remember that.
Speaker 9 (01:50:19):
Before we broke it out, I was like, just keep
rocking your heart with every play that you do, like,
just remember who we're playing for and the people around us.
And it was just so great that we got it
done for him and for everybody in the community.
Speaker 4 (01:50:31):
All Right, guys, I guess we'll let you go. Appreciate
you coming in to do the show here with us.
I know, Marty and Rob and I we sincerely thank
you for winning that state championship. It was weird not
having a game last Friday night. It's been such a
fun ride throughout the playoffs here. But what an incredible season.
And congratulations to you all on best of luck next
(01:50:51):
year at college.
Speaker 6 (01:50:53):
Thank you so much.
Speaker 8 (01:50:53):
And this was awesome. This was great, you know, just
doing this. I mean, I know we all had a
lot of fun on this. It just keeps getting better, no,
I mean just talking about just talking all about mcdevit football.
There's nothing better.
Speaker 11 (01:51:04):
But yeah, thank you guys, guys, thank.
Speaker 4 (01:51:06):
You, and of course absolutely and you guys have answered
the question for me what I'm going to buy for
Christmas gifts with all the mcdebit State Championship swag them.
Speaker 9 (01:51:16):
Already, Definitely, I definitely got they got, they got a
little bit that.
Speaker 11 (01:51:19):
Yeah, they got some good styles on there though. I
gotta say they love it. Yeah, they leveled all their
styles on that one.
Speaker 4 (01:51:26):
Barely broke in my twenty twenty two stuff. So you
know they're already so but yeah, so we'll take care
of that, all right. Thanks again, guys, We're going to

just some final thoughts here, what a magical season. Doesn't
seem that long ago. Mcdeviitt had that inner squad game
that we were at. It was a beautiful day and
then there we were down in York up on the
roof out there. It was really hot with the loudspeaker blaring.
(01:54:45):
As a Bishop mcdebitt defeated Mount Saint Joseph's. It was
a real fun game. Then we were looking forward to
that the matchup with Harrisburg, a game you know, we
all felt mcdebit should have won. They had to lead
there in the third quarter, and then Harrisburg kind of
sun mcdebit with the two big plays by their quarterback Lewis,
and then even still mcdebitt was a head late in
the game, Harrisburg rallied and then Harrisburg would win the
(01:55:07):
game and overtime, but mcdebbitt would rebound. The next week.
They started off slow there against Chambersburg in the first half,
but opened it up right before halftime and then mcdebitt
really never looked back. At that point. They went on
a big winning streak, and then of course they went
up to State College and we talked about that plenty
of times tonight as they fell down twenty one to
(01:55:28):
nothing and they really battled back in that game. And
then they just went into the playoffs and just dominated
the Lower Dolphin win was a win we expected, and
then they just pretty much rolled right on through. Played
two really good team. Mechanicsburg was in there, they had
a great season, they were undefeated, they had hopes to
beating mcdebitt. Crusaders went over there and defeated them, and
(01:55:49):
then you go out. Well, we had the reunion of
Tommy Milly as well out there at Elko and Bishop
mcdebitt was able to feed Exeter Township for the district championship,
and then we went up to Altoona, which has always
been a graveyard for midpenn teams. Bish mcdbbitt went up there,
got the job done, and then of course winning the
state championship at Cumberland Valley and doing it in just
(01:56:12):
crazy fashion. It was something that you didn't know if
they were going to win until the final. You know,
Phil goal went through and mcdebitt found a way and
got it done. But what a fantastic season for Bish
mcdebbitt and the seniors right off into the sun with
another state championship and coach Wector getting another championship as
well as the great coaching staff Bish mcdebitt has as well.
Speaker 2 (01:56:36):
I just it was a great year. I can't thank
Coach Wector enough for the interviews all sixteen weeks that
he gives me his whiteboard talks that we joke about
and because he knows I know nothing about football, should
anything about football, and so anyway, but no, I just
appreciate that, appreciate the whole mcdebit principles. Connor marcco and
(01:57:04):
everybody there at mcdebitt, Art, I appreciate you so much.
I mean, you are so passionate, and there's a lot
of times we disagree, uh, in the in the press
box and even during the week, but your passion cannot
be denied for Bishop mcdebitt, and I appreciate just just
working with I appreciate you just kind of taking me
along for the ride. I really do. And Art, we
(01:57:28):
got Rob here. It's just as I call him the
unofficial sports information director for mcdebit football. He knows everything
about it and uh, whatever there is to know about
mcdebit's sports, not just football. Robe knows and Rob You're
just so you see so much on the field, and
I just appreciate, appreciate you and you know how you
(01:57:49):
helped me out so much up there in the booth.
Speaker 7 (01:57:51):
I appreciate that.
Speaker 6 (01:57:52):
Marty.
Speaker 7 (01:57:53):
It's I'm very very kind, and I appreciate both of
you guys saying that. It's it's a lot of fun.
Speaker 3 (01:57:59):
You got.
Speaker 7 (01:58:00):
We have a lot of fun every Friday, whether you know,
the away games when we're obviously together together and doing
the broadcast, but even the home games when I'm not
with you on the air, but we're up in the
box together. It's always a fun night. There's always a
lot of just laughter and uh, good times and just
you know, observations on the field. I guess I kind
(01:58:24):
of want to echo what you guys said about coach
Jeff Wect and the amount of time that he gives
to everybody that he gives to the broadcast each week
with doing the interview with you know, sharing what's happening
with us, with all the you know, with all the media.
He's very generous with the TV stations with Penn Live
with everybody, and he's he just always really open about
(01:58:47):
giving people a window into his program, a big window
about everything that's going on. So that's, you know, hats
off to coach Wector, not just for being a great
football coach, but just being a generous person with his
time always. I guess some of my takeaways not necessarily
just from the season, but just from the show we
(01:59:08):
just did tonight with the with Stone Saunders, Lucas Lawler,
Landon Block and JJ Torres. It was very evident in
case people already didn't know what a close knit football
team this is, you know, what a what a group
you know, would love they have for one another, in
their coaching staff, their sense of community, I guess, their
(01:59:30):
sense of appreciation and gratitude is the word. I don't
think any of them used to maybe use the word gratitude,
although they did they said they were thankful. But what
I picked up listening to them is just the gratitude
that they have to be a part of Bishop McDevitt,
not just the football program, but the school community. And
that really shined through and listening to all of their
(01:59:51):
conversations tonight, So just a great thing to see with
this team. As far as the memories of the season,
I think you guys already touched upon the big ones.
It was evident from that Mount Saint Joseph game that
night down in York that this team was going to
be very good. The Harrisburg loss was disappointing, but what
you took away from it was how good mcdebit could
(02:00:14):
be would be. And you know, it just went on
from there. And I think the Mechanicsburg game was a
fun one because of the environment being over there and
at their stadium, that Mechanicsburg the park over there is
such a great environment for IH school football.
Speaker 6 (02:00:31):
Mcdebit.
Speaker 7 (02:00:31):
I think they talked about it tonight, Stone talked about,
you know, getting to play the away games in the
playoffs was kind of a bonus. It was fun to
play that last game for them at Rocker Ortenzio Stadium
because they got to honor rock O Ortensio the man
that night in winning that lowered offhin game, but then
going on the road after that and playing in different
(02:00:52):
environments where they normally don't play, I think it gave
this team a sense of spark and excitement doing that
that Mechanicsburg game was fun seeing them answer the bell there,
and then going forward from that game, they alluded to
the Exeter Pine Richland, a Roman Catholic game where the
team seem to have a newfound sense of kind of
(02:01:13):
tightening things up discipline, you know, cutting out some of
the penalties of all varieties. That was really striking to
hear them talk about that as well. And you know,
they just played their best football when they needed to.
They took it personal. The Pine Richland challenge about playing
the whippi ole, the physicality, they took that personal, and
(02:01:33):
then they wanted to finish the job against Roman Catholic
and they did.
Speaker 2 (02:01:37):
Just on a personal note, all right, I just want
to I would be remiss if I didn't thank Principal
Vince Harper for allowing me to have the access to
the coaches and the kids that he does and to
be a part of it. I really appreciate that.
Speaker 4 (02:01:50):
Marty. You do a fantastic job with the interviews every week.
You know, you take your time, you grow over there.
You interview Coach Wector, and the interviews of Coach Wector
a great addition to our pre game show every week,
and you bring a certain color that you know, I
can't I can't imitate, or Rob can as well. I mean,
you just bring a special something to the broadcast or
we we enjoy having you on there. And Rob, just
(02:02:13):
to echo what Marty was saying, I mean, you give
us so much information each week, You update us on
stuff via text message throughout the week, you send us
game notes, you know, every Thursday. And I was happy
to see that. Eric Thomas pointed that out in the broadcast.
They gave you credit because I mean you had literally
a whole stat pack of information for everybody out there.
(02:02:33):
So I mean you are really a sports information director
for Vision mcdabbitt. So so yeah, great job.
Speaker 7 (02:02:39):
Yeah, and thanks Art, I appreciate you saying that. And
Eric Thomas he did the NFHS broadcasts and that's still
available on demand if anyone hasn't gotten a chance to
watch that. Obviously there's the PCN one, but Eric did
the NFHS along with mcdabbitt, Alom Jamie Thomas. He did
the caller commentation commentary with Eric that night, and I
(02:03:02):
went back and took a look at that, and they
did a great job. If you're a McDavid fan, even
if you watched the PCN broadcast at some point, I
would encourage you to try to take a listen to
that NFHS one because it really had a lot of
flavor and they had a lot of great information about
our team.
Speaker 6 (02:03:21):
All right.
Speaker 4 (02:03:21):
We also want to thank J. C. Floyd as he
helped out with our broadcasts this year, as well Eli Fessler,
all of our sponsors, our salespeople that made it possible
for us to do these games. And we love doing it, folks.
We certainly don't do this for the money. It's a passion.
We love doing Bishop mcdebit football. That's where we want
(02:03:41):
to be on Friday nights unless there's a certain Notre
Dame game that I might have to go out of
town for every once in a while. But other than that,
you know, I love being there on Friday nights and
calling the games with my radio brothers here.
Speaker 2 (02:03:53):
And I think we have to point this out, folks.
We did not take this for granted. We are truly
blessed to be able to do something that we truly
love and we can't do it without you all, all
the fans, the good words coming up and saying hi
in the press box or before the games and everything.
We do not take any of that for granted.
Speaker 4 (02:04:12):
Yeah, we appreciate that when the fans come up in
person or on social media. I mean, it's it's nice
to know. And as you mentioned, you know rock Or
attendsiar there. I'm where you had mentioned to me with
coach Wector that when he had seen him, you know,
imitation of something. I get a little wound up on
the air a bit. But Jeff had mentioned about how
when he saw Rock oh, he you know, he did
(02:04:34):
some sort of an imitation or something that I do
on the air, and I do tend to get slightly excited,
especially when I called the game winning field goals. It
was just absolute madness when I saw saw So you know,
we're fans of Bisho mcdebitt and and we're blessed to
follow this program, and you know, we followed him for
so many years. To see them get that state championship
(02:04:57):
two years ago was just absolutely magnificent. And this time, Marty,
you were actually able to be there with us and
celebrate this championship down in the field, and just one
of those memories I'll never forget.
Speaker 2 (02:05:09):
Yeah, I appreciate you guys even got like a secret
service police escort for me to get through the gate
down there.
Speaker 4 (02:05:17):
All right, well, guys, I guess that's going to do it.
We'll wrap it up, Lord Willing. We'll all be back
with you again next fall, and we're certainly looking forward
to that, is Bishop McDevitt. We'll look to win three
championships in four years. Sebastian Williams will take over at
quarterback and he's a great quarterback. Going to be a
lot of fun to watch next year. Mcdebitt's going to
have a running game is going to be unbelievable next year.
(02:05:40):
I mean, we lost some very good seniors, but there's
a lot of good talent coming back next year.
Speaker 11 (02:05:45):
Guys.
Speaker 7 (02:05:46):
Yeah, I mean absolutely. You know Stone alluded to that earlier,
and you did art as well with Sebastian Williams. And
you know you've got two running backs coming back in
Nazir Jenes Davis, Maurice Barnes that we're just in a
maze zing one two punch and obviously Jerome LaRue Junior
on the horizon as well. All three of those young
men will be something special. And of course John tay
(02:06:09):
Quick was well over one thousand yards this year receiving,
he'll be leading the receiving corps and you know, quite
a bit coming back on defense, depending on you know,
who started on a given week, as many as nine starters,
you could consider coming back on the defense as well.
Speaker 4 (02:06:28):
All Right, guys, I never get tired of saying this
vision mcdebitt the twenty twenty four PIAA five A State champions.
It's two and three years. Mcdebit got its eighteenth district
title as well. This season. It's just been a fantastic ride.
We appreciate all our sponsors, as I mentioned, everyone who's
been along for the ride and takes time to listen
(02:06:51):
to us each week. We sincerely appreciate it. So that's
going to do it. This is Art Selby for reb Paglie,
Marty Bowman, J C. Floyd, Eli Fessler. Thanks to everyone.
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year, whatever holiday you celebrate as well.
So thanks again for listening to Bisha mcdebit football, and
you've heard it right here on Fox Sports fourteen sixty
(02:07:12):
and iHeartRadio. Good night everyone.
Speaker 1 (02:07:17):
Congratulations to the Bishop mcdebit Crusaders on winning the twenty
twenty four five A state Championship from your friends at
