Speaker 4 (00:13):
I'm Chad Bauer in for Marty Lens today alongside Gina
Gondek Box thirty one pinpoint weather mostly Sunday, mid fifties today,
mid sixties tomorrow, little cooler Sunday, still plenty nice though
sixty degree Sunday.

Speaker 3 (00:26):
It is thirty three now in Denver.

Speaker 5 (00:29):
Aurora Police releasing the nine one one call that came
in five hours after two inmates walked out of an
ic detention center.

Speaker 1 (00:35):
So we have started our protocol for save to residents
that we can't find their names.

Speaker 5 (00:46):
And now the police chief is firing back at those
who say officers refuse to get involved. Kaway's David Kale
joins his Live with more.

Speaker 6 (00:53):
Aurora Police Chief Todd Chamberlain says it's as simple as
a delayed notice from ICE to his department about the escape.
At the crux of why Auroral officers weren't able to help.

Speaker 7 (01:05):
The Aurora Police Department can only respond effectively and efficiently
when timely and accurate information is provided that unfortunately did
not happen during this case.

Speaker 6 (01:15):
National Border Patrol Council President Paul Perez fires back, accusing
police of being unaccountable.

Speaker 8 (01:21):
When they put their communities at risk. I don't care
what the person escaped for. If there's an escapee, every
law enforcement officer should be out there searching. That's what
we do. We want to do that. We want to
serve and protect our communities. And for the decisions to
be made at the top to say we're not going
to help, that's politics, that it's worse.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Chamberlain rejects that notion.

Speaker 7 (01:41):
ICE supervisors confirmed that there was never an expectation for
APD to lead this investigation. Yet it has become basically
public sentiment that ICE has suggested otherwise.

Speaker 6 (01:53):
The escape bees remain at large. They'd been arrested for
theft and for resisting arrest. One had been in the
country since twenty two, twenty three, the other since twenty thirteen.
At least one was on the way to deportation, with
the other scheduled to appear before an immigration judge.

Speaker 3 (02:08):
David Kowa.

Speaker 5 (02:10):
News an officer involved shooting near Denver school leaves a
man hospitalized in critical condition. This happened last night on
North Humbolds Street near Annunciation Catholic School.

Speaker 9 (02:20):
The call came in just after six twenty. Officers arrived
probably less than ten minutes later, immediately contacted him and
for you know, a minute or so or so, we're
engaged in conversation with him, seeing the weapon, you know,
trying to convince him to drop that weapon.

Speaker 5 (02:37):
Denver Police Chief Ron Thomas as the suspect refused to
drop the gun, so officers fired at him. None of
the officers were hurt, and they don't believe anyone was
inside the school at the time.

Speaker 4 (02:47):
Back to school today for students and teachers. After a
rally at the state capitol force several schools to close
because of staffing concerns, from Denver to.

Speaker 10 (02:57):
The Roaring Fork School District Indian and loaded the capitol
grounds with signs and chants fund our schools and no
more cuts. It's a far cry from a year ago
when there were a celebration for fully funding schools after
fifteen years of cuts with a bipart of the group
of lawmakers. But now there's a one point two billion
dollar budget shortfall in the state and cuts the education

(03:18):
are on the chopping block. When I ask people here
what should be cut instead, their answers were unclear, but
they said education should be off limits at the state capitol.

Speaker 3 (03:28):
Rob dass at Kaway Naws.

Speaker 4 (03:29):
Nearly half of states have legalized the recreational use of marijuana,
but now heart doctors are sending out a warning.

Speaker 11 (03:37):
Writing in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology,
a research team acknowledges that cannabis does have therapeutic benefits,
but those benefits may be outweighed by the risk of
heart attack. A three year follow up of marijuana users
with healthy blood pressure and normal cholesterol found that they
were over six times more likely to have experienced a
heart attack than non users.

Speaker 3 (03:56):
That's ABC's Jim Ryan.

Speaker 5 (03:58):
A massive blaze at a power substance near London's Heathrow Airport,
forcing the airport to close for the day and forcing
thirteen hundred flights to divert to other airports or be canceled.

Speaker 12 (04:09):
I think I'll take the day.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
I don't know, maybe I'll do something something.

Speaker 3 (04:13):
They all go explore somewhere.

Speaker 1 (04:14):
I don't know.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
I'm going to try to make the best of it.

Speaker 5 (04:16):
He was supposed to catch a flight back home to
Nashville today for British Airways and Airways and United flights
coming in or heading to London from DIA have been canceled.
As for the fire, London Fire Brigades Jonathan Smith says,
it's still burning. Approximately ten percent remains a light and
we are working with SSSE to safely resolve this incident.

(04:37):
More than one hundred flights were in the air this
morning when the pilots were given the order to turn
around or divert to other airports. Here in the US,
transportation officials worried about bridges, and TSB chair Jennifer Holmandy
says we need to prevent another disaster like the one
we saw last year in Baltimore when the Francis Scott
Key Bridge collapse.

Speaker 13 (04:56):
We're urging thirty owners of sixty eight bridge in nineteen
states to perform a vulnerability assessment of their bridge's risk
of catastrophic collapse from a vessel collision.

Speaker 5 (05:10):
She didn't list any bridges here in Colorado, but says
the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco and Brooklyn Bridge
and New York need a close inspection.

Speaker 4 (05:18):
Two prominent democrats rallying in Colorado today.

Speaker 14 (05:22):
People like Musk spending two hundred and seventy million dollars
to elect Trump as president and then becoming the most
important person in government. Does anybody think that has anything
to do with the democratic.

Speaker 3 (05:38):
Form of society.

Speaker 4 (05:39):
Senator Bernie Sanders, along with Congresswoman Alexandria Ocazio Cortes, are
hosting two Colorado rallies today as part of his National
Fighting Oligarchy Tour. The first in Greeley at one and
the second one will be at Civic Center Park at five.

Speaker 5 (05:55):
And Day one of the NCAA Championship Games in the
books with Cruz nine getting Ball Arena ready for the
next round tomorrow.

Speaker 12 (06:02):
Jung Zilverberg handles event operations at Ball Arena. It says
it takes months in preparation.

Speaker 3 (06:08):
To host something like the NCAA tournament.

Speaker 12 (06:10):
His team has been working since last June to get
the building ready, and now that the day is here,
the preparation makes what seems like a rush process into
a smooth operation.

Speaker 15 (06:18):
These special events like mars mann Is It's it's amazing
how you get that to where the staff are just
bought into it and they want to work it.

Speaker 3 (06:27):
You know, they want to be a part of it.

Speaker 12 (06:28):
Silverberg has been with Ball Arena for eleven years and
is working his second NCAA tournament. He says the energy
surrounding this tournament fuels his team to do a great job.
Keenan Dixon Kawa News.

Speaker 4 (06:39):

Speaker 5 (06:51):
Let's go now to the Kawa Traffic Center with a
look at your drive.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Here's Jonathan Steel.

Speaker 2 (06:56):
Yeah, it's been a great dear a drive out here
this morning for this Friday.

Speaker 3 (07:00):
We're loving it.

Speaker 2 (07:01):
Just a few slow spots really, no big delays. We
had just one accident early this morning that's long gone.
The east side of I seventies somewhat congested anywhere between
two two five and I twenty five bolt directions, kind
of a reduction and speeds in there.

Speaker 3 (07:14):
Eastbound seventy near Colefax.

Speaker 2 (07:16):
There's a construction zone that set up pretty early this
morning that continues to back you up two seventy, so
a little sluggish as you're making your way out of
Commerce City up through Basquez and it looks like I
twenty five south coming into downtown through about going maybe
Spear is a little slow. Turnpike looks great too, and
from the Tech Center are no big hang ups at
all into the foothills. The worst delay right now is
going to be up Clear Creek Canyon. If your travels

(07:36):
take you on US six west of Golden all the
way up to Tunnel three. We're seeing some pretty hefty
delays there. It's all roadwork related. Jonathan Steel on KA
eight fifty AM and ninety four one FM.

Speaker 5 (07:48):
PAT what are joining us with business and money news
and PAT. A lot of Tesla's are going back.

Speaker 3 (07:53):
To the dealership, the record number.

Speaker 16 (07:54):
In fact now there have been some recalls, but in
this case we're talking about trade ends. Some of this
is political because of Elon Musk's role in the Trump administration.
But where some analysty trouble, others see opportunity. Tesla cars
from the model year twenty seventeen or newer accounted for
one point four percent of all the vehicles traded in
until March fifteenth, which compares with just four tenths of

(08:17):
a percent in the period last year. Analyst a td
Cowan tell Barons Tesla could theoretically gain a bigger pool
of buyers. Their research says if Tesla were to lose
share in blue counties but gain in red, Tesla could
actually net meaningful sales gains over time. Chinnikosva bucks Knew
the European Union is delaying the first retaliatory tariffs on

(08:41):
US goods until mid April to allow time for more negotiations.
Those tariffs were set to take effect on April first.
Colorado's dangling incentives to bring a three D printing company
to the state, which could mean jobs at a facility
that would be built in Metro Denver. Colorado Economic Development
Corporation does not name the specific company that says the

(09:01):
state will offer tax incentives based on the number of
jobs provided. That company is also reportedly considering locations in
Kansas and Missouri. There are now more ways to pay
for the food that you have delivered door Dashes partnering
with the finance company Klarna.

Speaker 3 (09:15):
It's a buy now, pay later app.

Speaker 16 (09:17):
The companies say the partnership will allow a broader range
of payment options. Wall Street seems added for another downer today,
aside from the one day midweek rally stocks are down
for the weekend. Right now, the Dow is down four
hundred and sixty points and NASAK is down one hundred
and thirty s and p is down fifty. This update
brought to you by the Never Metro Chamber of Commerce.
Our next update is at eight thirty eight Pat Woodard

Speaker 4 (09:42):
In KOA Sports, there were a few upsets in the
first round of the NCAA Tournament. Ten seeded Arkansas beat
seventh seeded Kansas, eleven seeded Drake over six seed Missouri.

Speaker 3 (09:54):
The biggest upset of the day was McNeice.

Speaker 4 (09:56):
They won their first ever NCAA Tournament game, beat five
seed Clemson. In the games in Denvery yesterday, Wisconsin beat
Montana BYU over VCU.

Speaker 3 (10:06):
Texas A and M.

Speaker 4 (10:07):
Defeated Yale and Michigan in the best game of the day,
held off UC San Diego sixty eight to sixty five.

Speaker 3 (10:14):
That sets up.

Speaker 4 (10:15):
Saturday's matchups, which is Texas A and M and Michigan
in the first game, followed by BYU and Wisconsin. Twelve
seed at Colorado State will play their first round game today.
They're in Seattle and they will play fifth seeded Memphis
Rams coach Nico medvag I know.

Speaker 15 (10:31):
I'm biased, but I think this is the greatest sporting
event on Earth. It's what everybody in our business, players, coaches,
you know, dream of being a part of. We've been
fortunate to be here, you know, three the last four years.
They're all really rewarding. This one's incredibly special.

Speaker 4 (10:45):
The Rams have been red hot lately, winning ten games
in a row, and Koway's Marty Lens at the game
in Seattle.

Speaker 3 (10:52):
We will catch up with him coming up in just
a few minutes.

Speaker 4 (10:55):
In the first round of the wb IT, the top
seeded Colorado women cruise past Southeastern Louisiana seventy three to
forty one.

Speaker 3 (11:03):
Coach j R.

Speaker 17 (11:04):
Pain any team that's winning right now, like every game
that happens, somebody is going home and there's less teams
throughout the entire country. They're still getting to play basketball.
So I'm really proud and excited that we won.

Speaker 4 (11:17):
Colorado will host number four seed Gonzaga Sunday at one
o'clock KAA. Tournament updates presented by Exfinity stream Live Sports
from the best seats in the house. The Avalanche back
in the win column as they beat the Senators five
to one in Ottawa, as Brock Nelson scored two goals.

Speaker 3 (11:34):
Coach Jared Bednar, I'm really happy with it. I've been
really happy with the way we played.

Speaker 4 (11:39):
I know the game of Toronto, we didn't get the results,
but it was nice to see what what.

Speaker 1 (11:44):
Go in for us.

Speaker 4 (11:45):
Brown Knight at the ABS in Montreal to play the
Canadians in spring training baseball, Rockies beat the Rangers seven
to four. Today they play the Angels in the NBA
Nuggets in Portland tonight playing the Blazers.

Speaker 3 (11:57):
I'm Chad Bauer on the home of.

Speaker 4 (11:59):
The Broncos, Some Rockies and KOA Sports this afternoon at
three Colorado's Morning News KOA.

Speaker 5 (12:08):
News Sign eight seventeen, the State Department says Russia and
Ukraine are just a breadth away from a full ceasefire,
claiming that the two countries are close to making a deal.
Still Ukraine and Russia and carrying out new attacks against
each other. The news comes days after Ukrainian President Zelensky
backed President Trump's push for a limited ceasefire.

Speaker 4 (12:27):
President Trump says everyone knows eliminating the Department of Education
is the right thing to do.

Speaker 18 (12:33):
After forty five years. The United States spends more money
on education by far than any other country, yet we
rank near the bottom of the list in terms of success.

Speaker 4 (12:43):
Signing his executive order, Trump says it is time to
see education authority be returned to individual states. Education Secretary
Linda McMahon will have to get congressional approval to officially
abolish the department, but it's unlikely that they have the
votes to do so.

Speaker 5 (12:58):
Elon Musk will totally be briefed by defense leaders at
the Pentagon today, but there's confusion on exactly what we'll
be shared. The New York Times claims the military will
discuss a plan for any potential war that could break
out with China, but Defense Secretary Pete Heiseth denying that report,
saying Musk's visit will be an informal meeting about innovation efficiency.

Speaker 3 (13:18):
Since murder production.

Speaker 5 (13:19):
In a late night social media post, President Trump said
China will not even be mentioned or discussed.

Speaker 4 (13:24):
A new study ranks the state of Florida number one
for the most stressful emergency room visits.

Speaker 19 (13:30):
The rankings were compiled by Insurance Company Policy Guide and
covered factors ranging from cost in which Florida also ranked
first to number of admissions and number of inpatient days
for one thousand residents. If you're looking for the least
stressful er visits, Wyoming is the place to be. I'm
Tammy Trheo.

Speaker 4 (13:48):
When it comes to which state saw er visit wait
times increase the most. From twenty twelve to twenty twenty two,
Colorado ranked number five on the list.

Speaker 5 (13:56):
Coming up next, we'll go live to Seattle or a
very own Marty Lenz. We'll be celebrating as CSU rams
in a matter of hours. That conversation in about sixty seconds.

Speaker 4 (14:05):
First, though, check on traffic from the KOA Traffic Center.

Speaker 2 (14:08):
Here's Jonathan Steel. Yep, traffic is fine and dandy this morning.
Pretty light out here for the most part. Sure there's
a few slow spots, but nothing big. Only had one
accident this morning that's long gone near Havana and we're
still seeing some slowing out to that side of town,
especially through Coal Facts East Pound. It's west of E
four seventy and that's excuse me, construction related. It's been

(14:30):
backed up in there for up to about a mile
at a time. Two to five in from Parker's still
a little sluggish south by twenty five into downtown through
Spear two seventy certainly, and that's really about it. Coming
down Floyd Hills a little slow through the Veteran Memorial Tunnels.
That's construction related, as well as US six west of
Golden up their Creek Canyon. Jonathan Steel on KOA eight
toty AM and ninety four one.

Speaker 5 (14:51):
FF KOA News Time eight twenty Gina Gondeck and Chad
Bauer here on Colorado's Morning News. The big day for
the CSU Rams going up against Memphis later this afternoon
in the NCAA Basketball Tournament.

Speaker 4 (15:05):
Joining us on the KOA Common Spirit Health Hotline is
our second favorite CSULM Marty Lenz, How you doing, Marty?

Speaker 3 (15:13):
First, Susie. We gave Susie that yesterday.

Speaker 1 (15:17):
That crushing.

Speaker 4 (15:20):
So Marty, you and I were in contact over the
weekend after we knew that CSU was going in and
of course everybody was hoping that the selection committee would
put them in a Denver game. But when did you
make the decision that you were going to go and
would you have gone to any of the other sites
or Seattle the only when you were talking about going to.

Speaker 1 (15:40):
You know what, I knew they'd be somewhere, probably on
the West coast just because of where they were seeded twelve,
and you know, god, it would be great. I fa've
been there in Denver, but I decided really on Tuesday
to go, especially when I saw it with Seattle and
I thought for some reason it was going to be
to be San Francisco, but that would actually be next
week in they advanced. So the location made these here.
But being a fan and these opportunities have been kind

(16:03):
of rare of latency in this team play, I probably
wouldn't be conscious about anywhere. But Seattle was an easy
put to get here from Denver, so that's the big
genesis of it. And then of course getting tickets, because
even though you can put in for tickets, how colorious
state allocates them eat ram points. You know a certain
amount of folks if you don't it because they have
a finite amount of tickets, they don't have a bunch

(16:23):
they can give away, so you kind of go into
a lottery and see if they choose you. I was
lucky enough to be chosen to go, so I got
two tickets on here with my son. So all those
variety reasons, and Seattle was a great city too, so
a number of things. My son and I were just
kind of putting around yesterday around town, which was fun.
And the games here at the morning game here at
at eleven am, so a lot of people are up
and buzzing and moving already.

Speaker 5 (16:45):
Yeah, Marty, was it ben like in Seattle? Did you
find a lot of fellow rams on your flights or
around the city right now?

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Well, you know, my flight was so early yesterday, I
didn't have a lot of fellow rams. But I've seen
some rams. I've seen some family members, the team, coaches,
the support staff of running of them along the way.
Seeing a lot of fans of some of the other
universities here. Thought you wouldn't call them a gaggle of turtles.
What do you call them? You know, I know that
Rob's Maryland Terrapins are out here, so there's I've seen

(17:11):
a few of them out here. I've seen some folks
from from Liberty, so I've seen a lot of the
teams or people wearing their swag from their programs. So
there is a pretty good buzz and bet around the city.
And of course, you know, if you go to the
touristy places that you go to see, Like we went
to the Space Meeton yesterday in that are and you
see a lot of those folks mingling and wandering around
since you know, the games are getting underway today, so
a lot of people just settling in. But yeah, there's

(17:32):
a nice buzz around the city about you, you know,
with these teams and colleges and programs and with the tournament.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
Now have you been to NCAA tournament game in the past.

Speaker 1 (17:41):
I have, but not actually for CFU. Back in the day,
my late father, anytime that there was games in Denver
when they plam up the old Big Mac in places
like we always tried to get tickets for the regionals
to see teams. But in those days, you know, when
I was younger, you know, Cef, you wasn't making making
the tournament, so we'd see other teams. I've been to
these these games before, but this is the first one

(18:04):
least I can recall as an adult. Definitely as an
adult that I've traveled for to see say Colorado State play,
But I've been to tournament games before. In Denver does
a great job of hosting these, you know, doing the
regionals and those sort of things. They did a Final four,
you know, close to thirty years ago. I'll never do
that again because they don't have a facility that you know,
seats thirty forty thousand that they put everybody in because
you know, it's about that crowd appeal. But you know,

(18:26):
this is the first time I've done a travel piece
like this, and it's fun to do with my son.
It's kind of reminiscent of what my dad used to
do with me.

Speaker 5 (18:33):
Okay, so, Marty, obviously you want CSU to win today.
But what are your specific predictions for the game.

Speaker 1 (18:39):
Well, I think, like anything else, Seesues coming in as
the hottest team right now in the country, one of
the hottest. Can they keep that wind streak going? Can
they win eleventh straight? I think they can. You know,
Memphis presents a presents an interesting challenge. I think in
many ways, there's certain things that are similar about the programs.
I think we can get it done. You know, word
is is that the superstar player Memphis and his name

(19:00):
willis me right now, is probably not going to play
one of their great players, So that helps a little bit.
I think if the Rams play the defense they've shown
the past, couple of the games the Mountain West Tournament,
they got a great shot and they were shooting lights
out too. You hope that those those things continue. But
I do think the Rams can get it done today.
I actually like how the bracket lays out for them.
I think it's a great opportunity if they can, you know,

(19:22):
win and survive. I think they have an opportunity to,
you know, maybe do something a little special here in
these you know, first few games. So you know me, Gene,
I'm such a homer. So I'm always mister occupisted.

Speaker 4 (19:31):
And so do you have to be save your voice
and not screaming yell? So you so you have your
voice when you come back here Monday morning.

Speaker 5 (19:38):
Also, will you be back here Monday morning if they win?

Speaker 1 (19:40):
Oh? Well I will.

Speaker 3 (19:41):
So this is the thing.

Speaker 1 (19:42):
This is interesting guy. So you know, my flight is
supposed to leave eight o'clock and Seattle, I have no
idea what time the games are going to be Sunday,
So you know, at the very least hopefully that they
played early enough. You know, if I have to tweak
or adjust my flight, well yes I will. I will
be there Monday. Yes I'm not gonna yell and go
through all the stuff. I to go through my voice over.
I'll try to be very very calm and mellow.

Speaker 3 (20:05):
Good luck.

Speaker 1 (20:07):
We'll see what happens there with all that. So a
lot of excitement, guys, I mean, I know, I know
you guys love your schools and alma monitors, but this
is just it's a fun stage and it's just really
great for Colorado States to be out here. And you know,
there's a lot of intrigue with this as well. I'm
sure maybe you touched on that. There's talk to you know,
coach Medved he may move on to potentially his alma
water to go back to Minnesota and coach there. There's

(20:29):
you know, a little bit of light buzz, you know,
being talked about that who knows or that's going to lie.
So there's there's a lot of you want to say,
intrigue in and around, not only in the game itself,
but to see what's going to happen, you know after,
you know, after the Rams compete and however far they
go or whatever happens from there.

Speaker 5 (20:44):
So well, enjoy your time in Seattle, have fun tonight.
Hopefully fingers crossed for a win for your CSU Rams
and go check out our Instagram video because you'll see
I am actually sporting my CSO gear today just for you, Marty.

Speaker 1 (20:58):
Great, and I'm gonna go run and see the your
most favorite ram Susie so you have oversaw let her
know so love it.

Speaker 3 (21:05):
Thanks guys, see you soon, Marty, have a going Thanks.

Speaker 4 (21:10):
The news is next right after we get a check
on traffic from the KOA Traffic Center.

Speaker 3 (21:14):
Here's Jonathan Steele. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
I twenty five is looking great this morning. The only
slowdown I'm seeing is coming into downtown southbound there right
at about thirty eight, just a little bunch up, But
up north it's wide open to and from the Tech Center.
In fact, coming up out of the Tech from Sea
for seventy to Colfax is fifteen minutes, which is completely average,
and C four seventy same situation, fifteen minutes in between
Ken Carroll and I twenty five along the foothills good

(21:39):
up through Morrison two to five is just a little
sluggish from Parker to Yosemite, and we do see a
little bit of traffic to the east on I seventy
as well as two seventy, both directions out of Commerce City.
That construction zone in fact On I seventy eastbound near
Colefax continues to back up traffic. That's just a little
bit west of the E four seventy interchange. Jonathan Steel
